"That we at no playoff odds kind of underrate, but also if anyone goes down, they have so much depth at triple-A, both in the bullpen and in the lineup that I just think they'll be able to continue rolling throughout the entire season and in a way that I'm not confident that the Yankees are Boston would be able to keep up with. So I think both with the actual prospects like brujon and Taylor Wallace who I can't remember if he's still prospect eligible. But those guys aren't projected to start. But even beyond them, players who I probably haven't even heard of who I'll look up in August and see their running like a 2.3 ERA or something like that. Weaknesses, Bobby, unless you have a different strength. No, I mean, I wrote down their bullpen. It's still a strength, like whether or not it's this exact collection of people who throw 99 mph or whether it's a slightly different based on a trade that happens in May. Their bullpen in their confidence with how they use it is still in perpetuity strength for the race. I wrote for a weakness I wrote the rotation is a little bit. I think there are just question marks with the injuries that they have. They obviously don't have glass now. Shane baz is already having some elbow problems and I imagine that they won't push him too hard given that people are afraid of injured elbows as they should be. And then Brennan McKay had a thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. So glass now presumably is not going to be back this year. Right, exactly. He's more of a 2023 return. And I think that this was the thing that ultimately sank them in the playoffs last year. And that obviously is not representative of how they'll perform in the full 162 game season as it wasn't last year, but I do think that it is a question that they have not necessarily yet addressed. Yeah. Yep, I like Luis patino a lot and assuming bas will be back. Sometimes soon, I think we all like him a lot and we like Shane mcclanahan a lot. So yeah, with the raise, I mean, it's hard to decide what is a starter and what is a reliever and what is the rotation and what is the bullpen? It's all just sort of an amorphous mass there. There are enough good arms that you figure that they will get through it one way or another. But everything else you kind of have to like a lot too. So, I mean, Franco just, you know, we don't typically single out one player as the strength for a team. But he's going to be so good. And it's just going to be so much fun for the race to have a super duper star who will be there forever, or you won't necessarily play out that entire contract with the race, but you don't have to worry about him going anywhere for a while. And the rays depth has been their strength for a long time and just avoiding bad players, but they haven't as often had just like someone who's on the short list for the very best players in baseball. And Franco, I think, is already at that stage. He basically played at that stage in his rookie year at 20 years old. So what he can do in his sophomore season at 21 and a full season, I am very excited to see. So I don't know that we can choose him for a breakout because he was already good. Although he could certainly be so much better that maybe it'll qualify as a breakout. Does anyone have other breakout picks? I actually wrote down their other off season edition Brooks Rayleigh. Because of two reasons. The first is that they actually signed really to a two year, I believe $10 million contract, which opened my eyes given how good the race are at just generating decent relievers that they would actually go out and spend some money on another teams or labor Rayleigh was much better than his surface like ERA stats indicated last year, but there's one stat in particular that is impressive and presumably why the race were so interested in him, which is that last year, according to statcast, really allowed hard hit balls on just 6% of opposing swings, and that was the second lowest in the league. And his company was topless Josh hader. Number three was Austin Adams because he was very good even though he hit every other batter he paced. Number four was Devin Williams, and number 5 was Edwin Diaz. So that's basically the best relievers in the game and Brooks rally. So I'm curious to see what the rays do with him, how they use him, presumably not just as a loogie, but as someone who can go and inning or two at a time, just like the next breakout reliever that the race got their hands on. I don't know if this counts. I don't know if this counts. He might have just been too good, obviously, but like I'm really excited to see this year's version of drew Rasmussen, like he was really quite good at times last year, so I'm excited to see more from him. I don't know whether breakouts like they have so many dudes in the miners. They have so many guys. This team is ridiculous. This team had 11 prospects in our top 100 that does include some guys who were 50 future values who fell outside of the top 100, but they had 11 dudes. They graduated 5 top 100 prospects that year before. And so I think that continues to be a strength here too because they can just go get guys if they really need them. So that part's nice. I wrote on Taylor walls as a potential breakout. I mean, depending on how many of bats they actually are able to find for him with injuries or with platooning or whatever, but he was obviously a highly talented prospect. And played a little bit last year, struck out a little bit more than he did in the miners, but what rookie doesn't still walk like 13% of the time. I don't know who else is a really natural breakout feel like you'd want to say wander, but he's already, he's already broken out. He's already signed a $182 million contract like the cat's out of the bag. So I guess I guess Taylor walls you can see him kind of slotting into that typical raise where did this guy come from? All of a sudden he's incredible. He's the next Joey Wendell. Yeah. You know, I forgot that Joey Wendell was on the Marlins and I'm like, I'm not gonna enjoy the mets playing against Joey Wendell a bunch more. That's not gonna be good for me. I'm kind of interested in Francisco mejia as a post type prospect who is actually an above average hitter last year. Obviously Mike zunino blocking him talk about a breakout, but mejia can kind of play all over the diamond and he could have more in his bat too. So he's another option, but Meg I wrote down Rasmussen as my number two. So I'm glad we're on the same page. Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing more from him. You know, I just struggle with catchers. You can't frame, so it's hard for me. Well, I guess that kind of covers our important rookie category too, unless anyone else wants to throw any other names into that ring. But just generally, I mean, we've talked before about how great the race affiliates were last year and what was it, I think, a collective 6 23 winning percentage for their minor league teams, which was like the best ever. And they made the playoffs or one championships that a lot of those levels kind of incredible. The Yankees, by the way, were not that far behind. They had a 5 95 winning percentage that their affiliates last year..

"A good glove, so if that's all he gives you, then that's not so bad, but I was hoping that he would hit more and I don't know that there was a lot of underlying indication that there was more in the bat from last season, but again, maybe just acclimating to the majors and who knows getting to know the pitchers better, et cetera, changing cultures and conditions, maybe there could be more in him because just based on the projections and how well he hit in Korea and some of the glowing things that scout said about him, I kind of thought that was sort of a steel potentially. So I guess they're happy to have him now that they really need a short stop every day, but still. He had his exit velocity as average a velocity and was like 87 mph, a little bit under. But what's interesting is his max was one 12, which is not bad. So it seems like there could be more there if he can tighten up the zone, maybe make less weak contact. But yeah, I'm hopeful too. I think it would be, it would be nice, I think the talent is there, certainly, to be a little bit better than what he was last year. I have an ungenerous question that isn't about house on game. What is our over under on Austin Adams hit by pitches in 2018? That is an interesting story slash question. I don't know that it's a generous question, but I think it is an interesting question because Lester I listeners forget 24. 24 last year. In 15 two thirds innings. That is unsafe. Yeah, I don't know 'cause it had been a bit of a problem for him before, but not to that extent. And it got to the point where it seemed like they were a little reluctant to use him. They were still running him out there, but not as regularly because he had been effective despite plunking everyone, but then that slipped a little and it was like, man, you just got to get yourself under control here, like I know that slider is unheard of, but also you can't just hit people with it. So what Austin and Adams proposes is maybe you can, right? Maybe he's ironed that out hopefully at some point over this winter. Yeah, I don't know. What's a reasonable over under, like, 15 and a half? Sure. Yeah, okay. It feels low when you just did 24, but also it's an insanely high frequency. I think that feels like not overreacting to a statistically aberrant season, right? That feels that feels fine. He has thrown two spring innings so far and has hit zero guys. So. All right. Maybe things are behind him, although he has walked one, so one might suggest that he doesn't always quite know where it's going still. It just hasn't ended up plunking anybody yet. So that's good. All right. Well, anything else other than will Fernando tatis stop writing motorcycles and hurting himself in various ways? Are there any other lingering questions about the Padres? I don't know. I think it's just their pitching, whether these guys can stay healthy and perform even to 85% of what we know they're capable of in other cases. All right, would you prefer to go rockies or Diamondbacks here? Let's go with Arizona. Okay, yeah, save the most perplexing for last, perhaps. Not the Diamondbacks are not perplexing in their own way. So best off season move for Arizona? So there aren't a ton of options here. I think I'm gonna go with Oliver Perez. Bringing all of this. He pulled the Tom Brady. Yeah, exactly. He also, this is the best kind of other people have noted this, but the best kind of like baseball move, which we've gotten a lot of this year is just like, whoever is here in camp with a locker in a uniform. Yeah, is on the roster now. Yeah, it's just like, I think he's just an NRI, but like I'd like him, what else are they doing? Give all of her Perez a roster spot for a little bit. If you're not going to go for that, you know, Mark mullan. Yes. I guess. In Kennedy, they kind of just brought in some relievers, right? I guess Jordan luplow early on in the off season. They just signed Zach Davies recently, which is not a major move, but they would have killed Zach Davies at various points last season when they had like one starter left still standing from their opening day rotation Zach Davies would have been a godsend, so. Yeah, I think he's kind of a tough fit for environment and the style of pitching that Zach Davies is, but I think he's good and they certainly could use ours to rotate through or just be stabilized their rotation. But yeah, I mean, I think everything they've done is kind of on that level. I think Jordan luplow is a fine platoon hitter. That's short. Go get him and trade him at the deadline for something, you know, you could use in your next cycle. I think that more teams should be doing that. And I like that they did it. Same with Milan, you know? I think if they're able to have acquired better health that that would honestly be the single best thing that this team could get. Yeah. Yeah. You need more than Merrill Kelly alone. If we're talking about spring performances, was like incredible. Yeah. He was throwing what 3 mph harder than he had last year. That could be good for that. All right, what else is good for them? Drinks. So I wrote down the concept of regression to the mean. Is this a strength for them for this team? I don't know what you say. To tell Marte. Is a strength? Their lineup isn't awful. They have some interesting pieces. I really like Zach gallen. I don't think he's fully healthy yet even right now. So that's a bummer because I really like him, but it's hard to like any, again, if we're looking at units of lineup verse rotation versus bullpen or if you want to talk about fielding or whatever. It's hard to love any individual aspect of those things for this team, but they're not as bad as they were last year. They're not like 23 straight road losses or whatever it was. They're fine. They're below average, but they're not straight up awful. And I think that'll show itself this year. Like I said at the top..

"What's the record for most miss sweeps in a season period so including teams that did eventually ernest weep at some point. 'cause i was guessing that the pirates already held the record for most miss weeks before the first successful sweep in a season and ryan confirmed that the record for most outright missed sweeps since nineteen hundred is nineteen by the nineteen thirty philadelphia athletics and he confirmed that since one thousand nine hundred the record for most miss sweeps to start a season was eleven by the nineteen thirty nine pirates again. It's the pirates kind of a consistent theme here but yeah the pirates just a looking at their schedule for the rest of this season and seeing what their chances of A sweep are doesn't look great for them. They are playing the marlins right now. That's their best chance so if they could sweep the marlins then they could get off the schneider here after that they play the reds for three games than they play the phillies four games. It would be even tougher to sweep before game serious. And then they have the cubs again for three and then they finish this season against the reds so their best chances really come against the marlins this weekend and against the cubs in the last season of september. But they've already made history they could make even more history if a stay sleepless for the rest of the season. I'm so impressed by how many times you managed to say. Sweeps eating goof it up even one time ben. Yeah that's your proof house we it is to call back to some old effectively weld episodes in. Yeah this is not something i ever would have noticed. I guess it's frustrating to be poised on the precipice of sweep so many times and not to seal the deal. So that sucks. I had The lavar voice. Joke and song. That i told you off air second my head for lakes now. Our listeners did not hear it. You wanna share it with them. They he should record a cover of the eagles and sing it. You can go lavarnway. Yeah i not had that stuck in my head. Fortunately for days and days and days. Oh no yeah all right well. Good step blasts good questions. Good research. Thanks to everyone involved as always understood. Shout out a little extra fun factor. That i was hip to buy twitter and listener aiden jackson evans who tweeted prior to friday's game. That joey gallo needs one homer and twenty one more strikeouts in the next fifteen games to achieve a full nelson and what he is calling. The full nelson is more home. Runs and strike outs in a single season than nellie fox had in his entire nineteen season career so now fox Former white sox second baseman hall of famer sort of the metrical of his day. He had thirty five home runs and two hundred sixteen strikeouts in his entire career because he never really struck out and he didn't have a ton of power. Joey gallo entered friday's game with thirty five home runs and one hundred ninety six strikeout. So almost the full nelson and he has since homered in friday's game so he has surpassed smelly fox's career run total this season and he is well on his way to surpassing his career. Strikeout total and i just ran a quick stat head query to see who else had the full nelson in the past this players who've had thirty five or more homers and two hundred sixteen or more strikeouts in a single season. It's mark reynolds in two thousand nine. Adam done in two thousand twelve and chris davis in two thousand sixteen and i would guess that gallo will be the fourth sometime soon. The only player who has had the strikeouts but not the homers the half nelson is yoan moncada in two thousand eighteen cool. Yeah that's a sign of how things have changed to in also just How much of a contact. Outlier now fox was even in his day. But yeah that's doing for you constantly breaking the scale all right so that will do it for this week. Thanks as always for listening. Well eat your heart out. Howard empty your ninety nine year old record for the most hit by pitches in a single season has been broken on friday night after we finished recording padres reliever austin adams issued his twenty fourth hit by pitch of the season he has pitched only forty nine and two thirds innings the recipient of number twenty four was cardinals catcher yet ear. Molina looked like the pitch him on. The back of the arm. Adams really seems mad at himself every time it happens. He shouts looks down at his hand. As if to say how could you be paying me like this at this point. He can't be that surprised. Max bay on twitter did some analysis of his pitches locations and he found that earlier in the season maybe adams was getting a bit unlucky with how often his pitches were hitting people but that lately his expected hit by pitch rate has spiked to the point that on average would be expected to hit about six batters per hundred pitches just based on where his pitches have been. And this one was pretty unavoidable. It wasn't eighty seven mile per hour. Slider and molina was fine. Padres manager. jason. Taylor said i get the narrative. He gets the narrative. They're all sliders. This guy's not hunting. This guy's not throwing ninety five mile per hour fast balls and hitting guys. Yeah that's true but even so it just doesn't seem like he knows where his pitches are going. It's gotta be tough to bring a guy in there's like a near certainty at this point that he's going to hit someone course. It's also tough to bring a guy in when there's a good chance that he's going to give up runs and he's been doing that a lot lately and he did that in this game. Play log was doubled left. Strike out swinging walk. Wild pitch hit by pitch then adams was replaced by rusted. Who allowed a grand slam to dylan carlson. And that made. What was a four to cardinals. Lead in eight to cardinals lead. And that's where it ended up. So shockingly the vince. Velazquez austin adams. Ross detweiler pitching plan. Did not pay off adams over his last seven appearances has hit seven batters and perhaps more importantly to the padres is allowed. Ten earned runs so you may not be seeing him in a lot of high leverage situations but he has already made history to cap off one of the weirdest seasons of all.

"Limburg of the ringer. Not too shabby. How're you doing pretty. Well we're both doing better than a player at wanted to mention briefly in our banter here you know how the concept of replacement level and our stats. That tried to measure. the wind. Value of a player are kind of predicated on the idea that a team can just reach down to aaa at any time and pluck up a player who could perform at replacement level. That's the basic assumption right. That's what it's all based on the continued employment by the padres of jake. Arrieta seems to that idea put and he's looked cooked for a while and perhaps he could change something so that he would not look so cooked. But that doesn't seem to be happening here and you would think that team in the thick of a playoff race would be able to fight someone anyone to take the ball. Who is not jake arrieta. It's like he's breaking war in a way. It's like my assumption. Is that you're supposed to be able to find someone better than jake arrieta. And we're talking about someone who is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Just several years ago so life comes at you fast ended his come very fast to ed so according to fan graphs were he is now negative point eight which is just a pittance allowed to baseball reference were which has him at negative two point four holy holiest. Yeah so that's based on runs. Allowed right he has had a lot of runs allowed to end his most recent outing. This week was against the giants at the giants. One is they always do and in this case they want because jake arrieta lasted three and two thirds or if that was part of the recent at least and he is not gone more than five innings in a game since may fourteenth and his last several adding three in two-thirds five innings. Three and a third four four. Four one and two thirds one and two thirds. Use that giving you length. He's not giving you effectiveness during the inning or three that he pitches i know the padres are in a tough spot but they have matchup with the cartels coming up. That's pretty important for the padres right now. And if you're a mix headstart do we have to question. War does work. If chick corea keeps getting starts i mean. I know that it's much more complicated than this. I think we have to wonder. Like if mackenzie gore has been kidnapped. Yes i mean. That's that's part of this that you know we talk eric about that. I understand that. There's a lot going on there but it is shocking. You know like we talked. In the beginning of the season. About the the vaunted depth of the padres and i think that when we did our minor league free agent draft made the point that you agreed with that lake. There's there is death but there was also a good deal of injury risk and that injury risk has manifested itself into injuries with that with that rotation and so they have had to rely on a number of guys who i think probably assumed far greater roles and they were anticipating on opening day. But yeah maybe nothing underscores that point quite so strongly his continued presence on this roster which is given the stakes and the the sort of nature of the and are wildcard like kind of unfathomable and a lot of ways i struggled to. I don't think it breaks war. Thank that it challenges. Some of the promises that were is based on at least how front offices engage with engage with the concept of guys. They're gonna run out there to eat. Some innings is jake area does employment on the padras perhaps an indication that we need a another waiver death. Yeah to spare people from this a spectacle of figure pitching at this point in his career. Yeah you're pretty far down that's chart. If used those that are out there it would be. What if he were eating innings but not really super not he's knipling innings a guest. But that's about all you can say. No one has a work. Quite as low as jared at this year. No one else is below two. According to baseball reference among pitchers that is hunter dosier injured. Kalmyk are down there too so it's not great it's a sign of the padres desperation at this point and obviously they are short handed and yeah. Yeah it's rough like you'd have to think you'd prefer a bullpen game at this point of course can't do a bullpen. Came every day necessarily so. That's where they are but yeah not being able to complete a trade that is something hits probably contributing to this. That's why they picked him up in the first place why they've stuck with him this long right. I mean you sit there and you think. Wouldn't you rather just like have chris not start and then see how deep he can go and supplement from there but then you get deeper into that bullpen annually. Can't can't keep running austin adams out. There starting a national controversy. So gosh they could. They could sure. Use like mike clovinger. Right or adrian more hone. It's like there are guys that are in the the padres orbit who would be quite helpful here but but injury bug has just been so bad for them. Yeah so many tommy john. Since it's just like so it's a lot of tommy. John's ben you know you look at their roster resource page and tommy john. John young have paddock with elbow inflammation. And then and then you go. Tommy john john not all the guys who need tommy john or have gotten tommy john or starters but some of them are and you know john john. Yeah so good. Luck against the giants. The cardinals the giants again. The braves dodgers and the giants again just a little light end to the patriots scheduled. Clearly there in great shape for this stretch. It's it's rough out there for the patriots right now. Snell is hurt to one patrick. Who was pitching well. They'll take anyone they just signed. Ross detweiler who was just released by the marlins they signed vince velazquez who is released by the phillies. It's like the saddest swap meet other teams put pictures out on the curb. The padres say what find they bring him. In at this point they would gladly sign up for replacement level pitching anyway. Don't wanna pick on the patriots too much. They're spinning plenty of plates. It's just that most of them are dropping and breaking. We should probably talk a little bit about better. Players just took depress everyone and remind everyone of their mortality. We will be devoting most of this episode to talking about teams like the patriots who are in playoff races right now. J. jaffe will be us to talk about team..

"How do you how. what are you root for. If you're the padres. I mean you're making the playoffs average. You have to. And i'm sure that's your primary concern but would you have. That's a good question. I don't know the answer to that. Yeah that is a dilemma for the giants. Like still refuse to lose. Not they lost the game at me. And i guess they lost that first game to the dodgers. But i don't think they've lost since then and so they're on a nice run and they have built up at an. You can call it a cushion but at least the tiny bit of a buffer like the dodgers as well as they played they just can't close that crowned. Yeah they're just stubbornly like perpetually. It seems to games behind the giants but yet in a wildcard game. I don't know that there's anyone on the giant staff who scares me as much as multiple dodgers pitcher. Do i mean just looking at the names on the dodgers roster and the underlying performance in the run differential and all that like would suggest that probably the dodgers are the petr team or you would project them to be better going forward and in a single game you're either going to add sherzer or bueller. Not that like kevin costner. Logan weber or slouches or anything bad. It's tough to beat made Bureau those are white. If not the two top candidates for the words you know. They're right there with anyone else and burns and wheeler and yeah. I don't know he choose. I guess yours been on the better. Run of late and fewer has the standing in that clubhouse as like a career dodger but also scherzer's sir in pisa legend and i think everyone respects him so it's not like any feathers going to be ruffled. If max scherzer comes in and starts that game but yeah if you're the padres. I'd rather play the giants but you can't go right either way now. Did you see. Make sure reacting to clayton kershaw getting his return on max scherzer. He's not. He is not reached base. One time this year not one time not on any circumstances you know. He's should face austin atoms and then he'd have he'd have a shot. Although i can't imagine a person i'd rather hit with a baseball lesson measures just because he's so sure surgery when he's pitching in. That seems like it would be terrifying to stare down but But he he was. He was delightfully ruffled. Let's say he was not angry but he was. He was strongly aware of kershaw reaching when he has had been on the injured list for so long insurance or has just been unable to by reaching here so that is a record as well her it will be if he fails to get a hit her face the season some sort of risk for that. He can't do everything he does everything that is actually like really part of his job. That's an interesting point there. Like what if you do have a valuable member of your team who is scheduled to hit against us and adams at this point like. Do you just pinch hit for a max scherzer or do instructive like. Hey just don't even send in the patterson sparks like. Maybe they'll just you know tell you to go back to the dugout. Her assess strikes on you until you're struck out or just like don't stand close enough to the plate. Even austin adams could hit you. That would be my advice for someone. You really can't afford to lose for a playoff runner. A potential wildcard game. Yeah i mean. I guess i mean i suppose the set of circumstances under which shirts or who does go deep into games on occasion but like he's probably not standing in against all senators all that often. But yeah what do you what do you do. I mean i guess if you're confident in your padding than it probably is fine but it would make me at least a little bit nervous jeff. I would stay away so we're actually going to talk to jay jaffe honor next episode of 'bout some outlandish playoff scenarios so we can do a little check in on the standings there. 'cause things are interesting in the wildcard grace's but i can talk to to jay about all of that. All the teams that are neck and neck and neck and neck and neck and neck and economic. There are some some good ones there but you did want to just briefly bring up the blue jays who are right in the thick of that too. Did i. well. I wanted to say two things one Greater length than the other. But you know we talked. I think on our last episode about the sort of improbable run that they went on and how that run onto for them. Surging up the playoff odds. In addition to the actual standings which are the important thing there and one of the really cool things about working where i do is that we sometimes talk about something and i'll think that'd be good for someone to write about and then i go bother them and ask them to do it and they do a good job so you know. Some of the exact percentages have shifted around a little bit since he wrote this book. Ben clement a fun piece for us at van graphs on the greatness of the blue jays and also how that greatness and some of the ineptitude on the part of the yankees in particular has has allowed them to ascend as they have so people should check that out if they want a non snarky like explanation of how some of that stuff works. Which i think is good to meet people where they are and say we have a cool compelling real word world case to help us unpack a thing that people sometimes find a little opaque so so check that out and then also just thought we should like take a moment to be like a cool that we get to watch vladimir guerrero junior. Yep it sure is. I think we should. How did that home run. He hit become a homerun. Ben that's wild. That should have been a line out the third baseman. Yeah it is The only sadness ahead is is that he has now surpassed otani run race. And obviously i'm pulling fro tiny there..

"Water. We as a society going to do about austin adams. The man is a menace. I feel bad saying the man is a menace. Because i'm sure he is not being minutes on purpose and yet he is arguable. At this point we talked about awesome adams. The patriots reliever who is making a run at hit by pitch record recently. I think he had eighteen at the time or actually he had eighteen. And then you informed me as we were speaking that he had just racked up to more and so you had twenty well now. He has twenty three. Hide the all time record. He hit three dodgers in an inning in his most recent appearances so he has now hit twenty three batters in a mere forty eight n two-thirds innings pitched us just broken the scale entirely. Anyone who has ever been in this neighborhood of hit by pitches pitched like twice three times as many as uh than atoms. So we've never really seen anything like this. This level of effective wildness not just with walks but with hit by pitches just off the charts like is the point where you got a bed chipper suspended or something because it's like throw some pitches in the strikes out by men or at least don't hit people right. I don't imagine that there's any intent right. i don't wanna scribe. I'm sure he doesn't wanna hit batters. He doesn't help himself for his team when he does that. You know sure. He's not some vigilante out to injured her breasts of league. But i do. I do wonder. And i don't wanna be like you know overly hand wringing or moralizing when i say this but like it does seem that there is a fundamental breakdown ability to throw strikes or at least put the ball where he wants and have that place not be on someone and and so. I do wonder if it wouldn't you know it wouldn't benefit him just to like how a couple of days off. I know that the parties are in sort of a bad spot in a number of ways. Not the least of which is they really need to win. Baseball games right now. So i don't think that you could even really argue that. Benching him working against their interests necessarily but it is just. It's just shocking. Rate of hit by a pitch and at some point given the proclivity. You have to say like i gotta sit you down for a little while so that we can figure out what's going on here. There's no precedent really for this town. Hit by pitch rate over the sort of sample in so the padres are in sort of a a tough spot to be one thing if you were doing this and he had a sixty ira or something. But he has a three point five. He has been pretty effective and whether that is because it must be an uncomfortable. Bad would you want to stand in or dig in a guy right now but beyond that i mean. Can you bench someone who has played well for your team in pennant race. He's not like eat late inning reliever and yet it has kind of without being too concerned. Trolley like become sort of a safety. I mean and yeah. It's not intentional in the sense that like he's trying to get vengeance or something i don't think but i guess there's like inevitably some degree of intentionally in that like presumably if you just told him. Hey you have to throw this pitch in the strike zone. You can throw it at any speed do that like i assume if you could just lob it in there right so there must be some tradeoff between command and speeds. Where like there's a happy medium. where maybe if he took a little off he would have the pitch a little bit more under control so like. I guess he could do that although again. It's hard to ask someone who's competing at this level to like intentionally not perform as well. It's a very strange situation at incredibly strange. Is i guess. One mitigating factor is that he mostly throws sliders. Mostly hit people with sliders. So at least they're a little slower than fastballs would be and just looking at where he has hit people on their bodies like right. There are a lot that probably were not incredibly dangerous. Like there's some low ones and some ones in sort of the the core area may be on your butt or whatever so there aren't that many that are way up high in the head although like even in that inning where he hit three dodgers one dodger he didn't hit was trae turner but he made him duck. I mean pitch ed. Yeah that pitch was like where trae turner's head was. Before turner moved for joe he did move. But there's potential for something bad happened here so i don't really know what you do in this situation. Yeah i don't know like on the one hand. I think you're absolutely right like it has not been we have. We've inouye realized sort of the worst case. Scenario that you could envision with a set of circumstances like i and to your point like he is not otherwise bad at his job and the padres sort of need every not bad at their job. Bit of home got right now because they are in a tough spot for a playoff perspective. But it is. I don't know i had the thought. I just think we should take every opportunity. We can to revel in realizing that we would be just so much worse as as big leaguers. Big lakers are like even as just like guys in affiliated ball would be so much worse than them. And yesterday there was a moment in the the mariners. Red sox game where I don't remember which of the the red sox it was But he had to kind of go into the to the netting to try to make a play a ball anabolic infield territory which he did not succeed in doing it. I thought to myself. I would her myself doing that. Like going into the netting. I'd get caught in it somehow and like rip off a fingernail or break a finger or do something and so you know. I'm glad that no one's getting hit in the head but lake spare some thought for the butts out there man spare spare thought for those baseball bats. They still get. They can feel pain to get got so yet. The only other comp really is like forty-one-year-old orel hershiser in just the last innings of his career in two thousand he hit a ton of batters in even smaller sample so the rate was kind of comparable and for him. That was a sign that like. Okay time to hang them up. Maybe now in frost and that inside that it's that but it's like we need some remedial strike zone and trading or something here so anyway. I hope that the case continues not to be realized. Usually i would root for this strange kind of weird quirky history to happen but in this case it's pretty hard to root for someone else to get hit so now the the ghost of howard empty right now who when he three batters for the nineteen twenty two tigers while throwing two hundred seventy nine and two-thirds innings so yahya adams now has tied.

"Combo kumbo. It's a combo meal homerun steel. Do they dance around on the fantasy. Focus football. I think not behind. You gotta get him started. Come on then you're in good graces. There you could go on that show and dance around for some made up statistic which they made up actually all sing all their drops person. They don't need any production. Come on man. we have no production. Nobody can see us in action. Game joe by the way these players are making moves last week and make moves is brought to you by linked and jobs build a winning team today go to lincoln dot com slash sports. Aw a slew of veritable slew of combo meal since our past lascaux is bogus. Shut is fourth of the season jazz chisholm. Look at these middle infielders running while cetera. Mullins who's going thirty thirty and he's the only guy in baseball to do that although i guess they're tanaka's will do it. That's fine again on saturday. nick gordon. Who's not going to be what you want and fantasy and then on sunday this guy is one of my favorite players bread phillips not just because when you rule him laughing it makes me laugh every time. Got the funniest laugh weirdest left. He's really good player like he's not picking them up fantasy but he's got double digits in home runs and stole bases and if you're like in a sim league. His defense in the outfield is fantastic. He's like garry. Maddox out there. So brett phillips good for you know when i adding you and fantasy although on a deep league is going to win people leagues and deeply a only as a double digit season and homers steals disag- near the batting average. What a what a season. That's a a that's guy scooped up weeks ago in my a in labor. Because i well 'cause i mike trout my outfield And he put up some pretty surprising numbers and i thought he was. Just going to be a one-way plug in. He's he's at a much better season than you think. he has. By the way. I am going to pull you back to one comment there. They'll go ahead. That was really dismissive of nick. Ordon are you sure on that. I'm not positive that there's there's not going to be anything there. I think when. I looked at his minor league numbers okay. I saw a guy who was never. It's not dee gordon. But he's not a guy who i think is going to produce much power and i don't think last i checked. He's gonna walk enough to hit for a batting average and looking at his numbers so far. Yeah i mean. I i just don't see a whole lot. I mean it's a small sample size. But he's not getting a base. He's not slugging 'cause steal thirty bases in a season. of course he could but if he doesn't have any discipline which he doesn't he clearly doesn't and he doesn't have any power and he clearly doesn't tell me how he's going to matter. I mean like. I don't want another like even with maryvale. His double-digit homers martin modesty. You gotta for some power. Or i'm just not interested and i'm just not interested. So gordon's twenty-five grabby twenty six next year so he's starting to run a little time number. Five overall pick. Scouts did like him quite a bit. There did deal with some injuries. From last i had checked at one point. He had missed a good chunk of his season. I look at him in. The first thing i think is is this. The danny santana path to fantasy relatives. No power at all. Until danny santana had his moments danny santana no. I'm saying nick. Gordon has no prejudice twenty homer season for texas. I see where you're going. I agree that. I don't think that on the whole gordon is going to meet the expectations when he was drafted. But my point is that. I think i think there's going to be a dancing danny santana year. Nick gordon is a thing and then we're going to be. Do we get too far ahead of ourselves on that and and i'll remind this conversation the other direction then i mean. I'm trying to come up with cops here based on who's running all right because if you don't have a three hundred on base you shouldn't be playing roy and i don't think that's common. I don't think that's coming either like there's no jonathan vr. Here's a power no chisholm. Miles straw. I mean straw ticks a walk. Now we're wasting time nick gordon. There's nothing there. David doll ish but doll was a little more power unless steals. I'm i'm just trying to think from the lee hamilton. This billy hamilton who he is considerably more power raw power the raw ability than hamilton. I could not be less interested but proved me wrong. Closer carousel time. Time to sing again to do different to. It's the closer carousel need to videotape. Remember them on camera shy. Yeah you didn't dance around. That's one time. I was video. You gotta tell me. Hey hold on. I've got to get the camera out. Okay okay here it is. You gotta just not do that. Next show next. I'll do anything interest you here. I'll tell you what interests me here. Okay austin adams just set the major league record for most hit by pitches in season and he did it in like two hundred fewer innings that the guy who rather record he's pitched like forty eight innings and he hit twenty four guy hit three yesterday. Three dodgers yesterday and then he almost hit pretty turn it on the head and when i saw the replay i was thinking you know. Why is he out there. Like at some point and the other team knows. He has no is no commander. Okay i mean. He's throwing the ball everywhere but often adam's okay season numbers otherwise not so bad areas fine strike rates fine. But it's great. Actually a great striker at no home runs allowed. I understand why the padres continue continued. Use them. But i mean he has more hit batsman than hits. Allow in forty into thirds. That's hard to do. it's impossible to do. did it. My god your season for us and adam. I understand that if he were a closer that could be the discussion. That brings hit batsman into the whip calculation. I have this talk a lot with the sabermetrics leagues as to penalizing for hit. Batsmen for pitchers just like you went for a walk walks. Well doesn't that. Go on your whip walks in. It doesn't cost walks and hits in it so in the points like i. Have you get credit for the hit. Batsmen on hitting side. But we don't penalize the pitchers on that side of austin we'd have a discussion and most points leaks. Don't they credit the hitters but not penalize the pitchers. The law is very weirdly. Okay let's move on. Before i get in trouble i mean really. I'm going to give you level. We're going to get down to yeah there. There weren't a lot of change things going on here but the under the radar win your league guys gio gago jordan of vermont. Yeah but they're everywhere but now aren't they. They have to be they are but do you think that this is not right. That's what i'm saying. Are you all in on those guys. I look at those two leagues. And i think you got to be all in our. Yeah i'm all in. I've been all in on wasn't closing until like a week or two ago because the cardinals were paying attention. But yes i mean jordan ramana. I've been in for months. And even when mary where there was about to come back it was pretty obvious. He wasn't losing the job. There's a couple of other situations that interests me. Bad teams here only gopher. I'll be so was pittsburgh where david bednarz hurt. So chris. stratton is now getting their saves and arizona does win on occasion and j b window. The former oakland athletic. It looks like they're closer. Because clifford went on the angeles So so glad for clipper it in one of my leagues where somebody wanted. You know an unbelievable amount. But he's going to win the league. Some those situations are obviously if you need every last save. I do think you could get three or four saves from window concrete. Stratton anything to talk about on the yankees that britain's pitch next year so obviously it was a lot more hurt than they were letting on and pitched to the command was really off so not not totally shocked by that. One shape and oakland focus is chafing. I think is missing the playoffs. I think it's.

"I'm i picked up some flip from the mld website. I just a la- numbers. We'd like escape. We just talking about the padres. So this old segues together. Nicely austin austin adams. Relief pitcher for san diego is couldn't possibly on coastal a record. Nothing hit by pitches Is on twenty hit by pitches. I think the records twenty tree how anyone anyone who's top twenty i think demand minimum one hundred and seventy three innings of work. You save the cigarette. This is good stuff. Adams has managed to hit twenty buys in forty two readings of weird. I mean that's that's a world record times five. He's he's five hundred percent ahead of anyone else. Have plumped trump them on the books on. He's averaging about what one hit per hit hit a for innings for the first five minutes in front of you look. You're by kobe for you crazy. Yeah we'll keep an eye on alston. Adams goes next. If he's actually to call you the phrase he's talking to be oil and the putting them in there because he's doing okay But yeah you will. You will hit two on the way to getting himself out of a job. So that the other thing i picked up from that little piece that they ran wisdom the phillies again record. Set in the ninth. Most all time loan saves city now. We mentioned to the giants sods forty two shaves and that was maybe about ten days ago so they might be a few more in the by now but fifty but would saves his absolutely staggering move. Some beds could be. You could customer golden mentioned if you just cut this number in half phil yet in a pretty much of his division right now we only have one division left to talk about here but they give her the phillies for keeping it. Interesting so I think it's going to be a battle between them and the braves here down the stretch. Because i think the mets are pretty much just out of it. They have very tough schedule. Remaining also I think this weekend series between the yankees. And the mets is gonna tell it all which way this teams are going to go but yet thirty blown slaves. I mean you would think that added trade deadline that your gm would go out and get you a closer. That's able to shut the door for you. But i guess they don't wanna win games. I don't know what the deal is. Thirty blown saves. that's pretty mind boggling. It sent us up cd. everybody. I mean yet. Should he goes skating around on the bad teams as well. The would have moved would move relievers on..

"You know what i'm gonna do. You know what i'm gonna say you know who's having a pretty okay. Little year wayne right adam. Wainwright is thirty nine did you. Wainwright is thirty. Nine is forty actually birthday. that's right. He's an end of august guy. Adam wainwright yeah. I don't know if i have a ton more to say about that. The folks can't check out in the piece that ben clemens wrote about weighing right at the end of august maybe right around. His birthday was but like his sinkers effective striking out some more guys. i don't know he's just. He's adam wainwright in his old. He and melina just had their three hundredth start together. Yeah battery and he said he wants to be back in twenty twenty two and melina is already signed to be back next year so they will hopefully extend that total in. Yeah while you were away. Ben clemens was on and we did talk a bit about wainwright so but but prior to that. He's really had not talked about him. Actually sure and i can make a different pick if you feel like so. I have not talked about him with you on the path cashiers. I call really so so yeah that counts and he deserves to be talked about. He's been great. Yeah adam wainwright all right. I will take austin riley fair. He has been the best player on the braves share. I think i mean going by war and obviously a kuni has been out in stroke has been out in. Anderson is ms taivon other guys mistiming. Osuna has not played for them much in on wync. They have lost a lot of guys. They were counting on. But that just makes it. Even more important that austin riley has stepped up and he was not an all star or anything but he has totally turned it on. He sit in. Oh one 373 five thirty one with twenty nine homers in five hundred sixty five plate appearances. He has been a mainstay in that lineup. And in the field at third base and you someone who when he came up in two thousand nineteen he sort of you know he was a prospect and he caused a little bit of a stir initially like he. He came out of the gate quickly and he was raking for awhile and then the league seem to adjust perhaps and he did not adjust back right away and was sort of struggling and last year. He did not hit particularly well in the small sample season. He was a blow average hitter. But this year you come back. And he's played like a an absolute star at a time when they really really needed someone to do that so he is kind of. I guess you could put him in the post hype sleeper category. 'cause four first-round pick and prominent prospect but didn't pan out immediately but it has really panned out all of a sudden this season and they've needed it. It's really amazing. How they have managed to remake their offense and lighter judges. We've talked about that some but it's really incredible we could. We could probably have. Adam duvall on this list. He certainly fits the bill. So yeah i think that's a really good pick. Maybe we'll stay in the braves area but nocco that undue law. I'm gonna mutate dance. Be swanson sort of similar. He's sort of in that similar more. We we were always going to view swanson in in the context of the the blockbuster trade that brought him to atlanta and you know he's he was like fine and then he was at times kind of underwhelming but he's been worse like over three wins and he hit twenty six home runs and he's been defensively valuable for them. He's like walking a little less but also striking out a little bit less and definitely hitting for for a bit more thump. So yeah dance be swanson how. How many of these are doing. Should i say more about dance. He's wants to or should we take the short ones where we can get. We're doing our our plan. Was like eight rounds. We'll see where we end up but yes hauser's when you Told me that many hauser's so we'll see what we get to. But i will take tie. France earners service to and from your but yeah ty france now he is someone who was good last year too but there was some question about whether that would continue rate. And i remember i think when we did our mariner season preview segment. That was a question like is actually good. Could he keep doing that and he has kept doing that and he has done it in a way that may be gives you even more confidence that he can keep doing it because he had a three ninety bab last year when he had a one. Thirty two wrc. Plus this year he has basically the same wrc plus one twenty eight but with a three thirty babba. So he's sixty points of batting average on balls in play and yet he has been really good regardless and he's hit two ninety one three sixty two four forty seven. He is hit sixteen homers in five hundred fifty. Five plate appearances. He is also leading the major leagues. In times hit by pitch. He has been hit by a lot of purchase this year. He's been hit by twenty two. I believe twenty two times. And that's also interesting because we talked recently about austin adams the patriots reliever who is like on a historic hit by pitch pace and these two guys were traded for each other among others. It was a bigger trade. But thai franson austin adams. Were part of that. Padres mariners exchange last year and now adams leading the major leagues in hitting daughters and tie france leading the majors in being hit by pitches so that will give you a nice boost so i don't know if that is a skill or not it. It doesn't seem like he was getting plunked at nearly the same rate in past seasons. So maybe that is not quite so sustainable and maybe he hopes it's not sustainable because it probably hurt sometimes but he has been good he has just been a good solid contributor to that offense in a thirty four th round pick from twenty fifteen with the patriots so to make the majors at all as a third or fourth round pick is pretty impressive and to be as good as he's been is even more impressive. He's been like a three four wind player. Depending on your win metric. That's a good pick. He was on my list. He's exciting because you know there was. There was like a chance that whoever sort of filled in for of and white was going to make mariners fans feel like he was a good first baseman because of and white has just had such an injured and bad year but like francis legitimately quite fun And so that's that's pretty cool even even absent the contrast so that's a good pick. Okay i'm going to take whore. Hey polanco oh then hit blanco. Having a good year with four point one wins per graphs. war one twenty nine. Wnyc plus. He's gonna one twenty nine wrc plus so he you might remember was injured. He had an ankle injury and he was pretty compromised by like his His is so last year was point zero nine six. That's very good. And he hit four home runs granted. It was the short season but he was just clearly quite compromised and He seems to be back to full. Health is hit twenty seven home runs and the contrast between last year and this year is particularly stark. When you look at his left split. He's his switch hitter but things have improved for him pretty dramatically compared to last year like his barrel rate went from four percent to nine point one percent and his heart hit rate went up. He went from thirty two to thirty seven his exit villager up. This is true across the board. But it's particularly stark when you look at him hitting from the left side and he gave. He gave a twins fan. Some fun and excitement by just doing like a bunch of walk-offs did he. Did he did three walk-offs and so among the wpa when the leaders if not the wpa leader and He was the first player with a walk off. Rbi in three straight team wins since david ortiz in the two thousand four playoffs and the first in the regular season sends tony pena in june of nineteen eighty two. So any year that has been a disappointment and pretty underwhelming the twins and their fans. I think they have to be pretty excited. That he looks like he is back on track. Because you know he'd had that look really great twenty nineteen and everyone was so excited in with the injury and stuff he was. He was quite poor last year. So yeah or hip lanka. It's good one man. I'm still looking at the the raise bullpens because they have like they have basically a whole bullpen on the injured west in jefferson. Yeah and yet. They also like just unbelievable like intricate. Dredge has a one point. Oh seven yara. In fifty eight and innings pitched hunter strickland has one point six nine year a jt. How do you say forget show I believe yes so one point six nine year a collin mchugh one point seven four. Era adam conley two point three era. Whistler has a two point three era gp fire..

"Sports there are other players in baseball other than raul montes. Kid liotta taveras on tuesday had one. He's never very interesting player. Lorenzo cain wednesday. Marcus semi-in on wednesday as well By the way modesty leads baseball was six combo meals. Since last september. I one counter year. He ranks tied for four hundred tenth in plate appearances over that stretch. He's behind even tomas neto but he has six combo meals. It's unbelievable when he plays great. That's an amazing stat about. I want to ask you about taveras. I haven't been a league on. I'm not sure. I want to keep them around and you know he's bet like one ten but he's got. He's a power speed intrigue. Are you intrigued enough. I wasn't the preseason and have subsequently changed my mind. The fun layer of varas fact is counting the previous this and mostly. It's this thirty. One consecutive at bats not trips the play at-bats hitless and that has a lot of the issues. he's had. He's got a huge hole swing and then he has three games like this but at the same time it while i was colorado pitching mom. Marquess was one of them. I think there is something there. I think it's going to take like joe. Adele a very long time for him to bring it together You know what that's an interesting cop. They're very different by their kind of the same. I don't expect much either this season but man walks into either right. Maybe not even next year i mean. How long do we wait for. Joe adele like us. The thing immediately really. Who is at the alex gordon. We have three four years. These are the core patterson's of fantasy baseball. This is where you are all intrigued by the huge upside but beneath the huge upside is the cavernous well of bad. That's the problem is well of bad. That sounds like the phillies bullpen. That's my ass fantasy football team name this year cavernous well of bad lead the negative fantasy football league this year. We need it the number one see. I don't want anything negative at all right now by way. I've been meaning to bring this up. And i haven't done it. I'm sure you're well aware who leads the major leagues in pitchers in hitting batters patriots. Thinking which starters throw inside you're thinking about like that right like who who who hits people that's got a right realize it's a relief pitcher. I'm not totally stunned by that. But then i have no idea who it is. Oh well no. I i have. It's awesome out of the padres as hit twenty one hitters in forty five innings. Ooh i know it's crazy. Like imagine having him innocent league like. That's unbelievable. I wanna make sure i get this right. I'm trying to pull it up. But sometimes baseball reference on my computer takes a minute but my good like isn't that crazy stat. That's the crazy stat of the day. Like you remember. When mark siamese crazy ridiculous so yeah this is true and it's not even close. Alison adams has twenty. Hit by pitch in forty five and two thirds and then after that joe moscow fifteen charlie morton fourteen and alex water hidden. Everybody that's not even only thirty players even double digits to relief pitcher austin adams. Who is mildly intriguing. It's a decent whip. It's a very good strikeout rate. He's not giving hits. He's given up twenty three hits and he's hit twenty batters i. This is never been done before. Never more hit batsmen than hits allowed. I'm while i mean with a minimum qualification of twenty or so right. Yeah even then probably. That's crazy that's crazy anyway. I don't know how to discuss. Lorenzo cain marcus. Semi by the way is like an mvp candidate. He's not gonna win it because otani has to and us to finished second but shouldn't marcus semi and finish third and mvp voting or have you from. Yeah yeah he. He needs some high ballot votes and he has done wonders for himself on the free agent market on. That is one of the guys. I'm going to be most fascinated by the winner outcome. I mean that's that's three hundred million dollar contract isn't it. Yeah i mean because you have to remember. This is a guy who could go back to shortstop and give you quality. Defense the improvements. He made defensively at that position for the oakland a.'s. Over a two year period were astor astronomical so rather have marcus samuel cory seager not just in fantasy but in real life too. Yeah i mean the contractual and long term ramifications. Come into play. They're both very age. And so yeah career like why would wouldn't you take semyon i i would. You'll extending deal is probably gonna wind up. Being smarter for the production is has a semi. We never really talk about this. But isn't marcus semi now like a second round. Pick next year and fantasy. Tell me why is not like right now. i bet. He's top ten on the playwright or i'm trying to fourteen this fourteen pretty pretty good. Why why would we not make marcus. Semyon a top twenty player in rankings. Next season what's the reason reason we wouldn't do that. Yeah i'd i'd have to dive a little little bit into the speed metrics. That would be i that that were the last three seasons. He's been an absolute monster as a thirty home. Run middle infielder with well not multi eligible now right but i mean who will get it probably batting average scored the issue i have is the twenty eighteen nineteen where he was twenty. Four out of thirty in steel. So that's why. I said i want to dive into the steals metrics but a huge improvement efficiency this year. Let's move over now to the closer carousel. If you don't mind do do the diluted. It's the closer carousel. I danced to because i was fun. I was remiss on monday by not mentioning the biggest story among the closers. I wrote about it. And i didn't mention it. I don't know why. Because i think sometimes that's why james garrincha got the moated over the weekend by cleveland. The guardians demoted james karen. Check which. I can't remember a fall from grace i mean. Obviously relief pitchers get hurt. They're very volatile. But i mean you've got career checking your top. Ten dynasty relief pitchers and i applauded it. And now he's a pitching for columbus and triple a. And he was really good for the first couple of months and he was really bad for the next couple of months and it coincidentally it was when baseball. Crackdown on the sticky substances. And all that. And he lost all this efficiency on a spin rate for his fastball and then he became just normal and he's walking people and everybody's hitting them and they're hitting home runs so you tell me i would drop current check for the rest of the season. But what are we going to do with him next year. Because among strike our relievers heat a monster but he hasn't been for less two months. What are you doing here. So since june nineteenth that's a sixteen percent walk rate that is current check out his absolute worse. We talked about that coming into the season. And i think it needs major correction. He didn't show great improvement on that earlier.

"Hit by pitches. Is charlie morton in two thousand fourteen. He hit nineteen guys in one hundred fifty seven and a third innings so he threw three times as many innings to hit basically the same number of guys so no one has been this efficient with hit by pitches even though this is the era of high hit by pitch rates. Austin adams is really in a class by himself. Well can i tell you something that will just make your your head spin even more. You hit two more today then. No way nineteen nineteen and twenty. He had paving smith and he hit david peralta in their game against the d-box which as an aside. If you're the padres you should probably beat the d-box i mean. I know that they have been better over the last month than they were at the beginning of the year. Which isn't hard 'cause they were real bad. But like if you're trying to make up ground in that wild card race you can't be you know losing to the diamondbacks. Yeah take advantage of the soft part of your schedule. But he hit two more today. That is unbelievable. So i just updated my staff query now so fewest innings pitched to the season by anyone with twenty head pipe pitches brunson arroyo in two thousand four with one hundred seventy eight and two-thirds in us and adams is what forty six forty seven innings at this point that is like sometimes. They say that someone is an uncomfortable at bat. I mean this is literally an uncomfortable. Bet 'cause you're probably getting plunked. That's like get to the point where i don't know if it's a safety issue like i i know he did hit someone in the back of the head or the helmet wants not too long ago and i think he was sort of shaken by that experience but he has continued to go out there and keep plunking people so i linked to this. Mvp dot com peace with a a bunch of painful but fun facts about austin adamson his hit by pitches so the most hit by pitches in a season in the live ball era that since nineteen twenty is howard m key twenty three in one thousand nine hundred twenty two twenty two ben and that was two hundred. Seventy nine innings pitched so. He's got a real chips at that of a whole month left just to get a measly. Three more hit by pitches got today god. Today the most recent kerry would hit twenty one in in two thousand three with that was in two hundred nine eleven innings pitch. Can i tell you how his his eighth-inning went today so he came in he replaced. Daniel hudson tell martin singled and then he hit paving smith and then he hit david burrows and then josh van meter walked and then they took him out. And i'm sorry. It's terrible to laugh at this. Because i'm sure he feels awful about it. You know there have been moments that have been really high stakes. High leverage moments against the dodgers has just hit guys. he's just hit a bunch of guys in walked a bunch more but you know thankfully smith and peralta seem like they were fine but you just gotta be. You have to be an i. Think my favorite part of this. Is that having loaded the bases knowing what we know in can hit his slider except with their body which is a winning strategy. Sometimes but also painful strategy but yeah. It's getting to the point where i mean. Clearly he's been quite effective not today but usually and so you keep running him out there for the padres like yeah you have to be careful about when you use him and also i mean i guess it gets to a certain point where it's like. Hey if you can't stop hitting people like maybe you shouldn't be paycheck. And i know you have a good and everything but like it does become a a safety concern at some point. And maybe we're past that point now. So i don't know what the remedy for this is like. They're going to keep using as long as he's getting out when he is not hitting people with pitches but really got to get it under control rusted. Yeah the year that he was with seattle he was awesome atoms and then they also had brune brennan whose his first they might be. Brendan or it might be. He might be brennan. Brennan for all i know i could never remember And different yeah and then just kept they got. They got hurt in alphabetical order. So i was austin adams and he was closing and then he got hurt and then it was brennan and he was closing and then he got hurt. And then i guess austin adams said i i will do the herding now. No i'm not attributing any mouser intented. That's a terrible thing to accuse someone of but yet it's a it's a lot of it's a lot of hip i pitch man. Yes and my less note for something to mention to make. I don't know whether you cut cardinals. Broadcaster mike shannon discovering. Nfc's live on the air. Okay well i'll play a little clip here for the benefit of the audience. And i will send you a link so that you can enjoy it at your leisure but late in august cardinals radio broadcaster mike shannon who is in his fiftieth and final season. He's about to retire. He was almost out. It's like the classic story like one last job in something always goes wrong. And that's what happened here to make shannon who almost escaped without having to find out what an nf was or try to tell his audience what an hefty was but mike. Shannon at eighty two years old encountered. Nf for the first time in some kind of read that he was expected to do and understandably he had no idea what an nfc was. He had trouble pronouncing many of the words associated with nf and it was all very relatable for for me for us for a lot of people who have struggled with understanding. What an t is an why we should know care. And eventually they handed him a printout and so he was able to read from it. Although that didn't really seem to help all that much when he was trying to talk about crypto and various crypto current his is just not really his natural element. I mean one second. He's calling play by play and the next he is expected to talk about crypto currency and this radio so while he is attempting to figure this out in real time the game is going on occasionally does a bit play by play here and there check out the full clips on the show page. But here's an edited expert. Now is your chance to come. Doodo keepsakes memorable experiences from saint..

"Seemed like a long term play. Like hey toro seems like a semi promising player you know. He is under team control for years here. Sell high on the reliever who kind of came out of nowhere turns out. They didn't even have to wait for future. Seasons head has paid off immediately as he said he's one forty. Wrc plus he's sitting three eleven three eighty seven four fifty nine. So you know like he's getting on base mostly by hidden and Yeah i don't know it's been nice like he's he's striking out less than he did in houston but neither of these are similar enough surely think it means anything necessarily but yeah. He's having a nice little run for seattle. I do find the timing deporto's extension curious now. Because i necessarily think that's a bad decision but it just seems like all the timing around what seattle has done. This year has been sort of off a little bit like it. It is odd that they let him do the deadline without an extension. Already in place you know. In this year that theoretically could have ended up being kind of important to them as they go into what they hope to be their competitive window here. So i don't know i think that when dipoto and the mariners for an office writ large were able to sort of get ownership by in on a plan for what they wanted to do to rebuild the farm and get ready to compete. After you know. Having good veteran players come in but coming up short a couple of years in a row the things settled back into something that he kind of got into a place where he was able to execute on his vision. And that's good. And now his next challenge will be convincing mariners ownership to spend some money as they come out of this rebuild but it does seem like dipoto her second it does really seem like that clubhouse like scott service a lot so that seems good like he got all emotional on behalf of his guys. Managers get emotional on behalf of our guys. So i don't know. I guess if you trusted him to try to win with existing major league talent that you had a couple of big free agents and you trusted him to rebuild the farm after. That didn't quite work out. It's not wild to me that you would entrust him to take them into a place of contention again If you like the even if you don't like the results because they still haven't been to the postseason but if you think that his process was good or that the way he's running the is good then that's not super surprising and it doesn't seem like you know for better or is it doesn't seem like some of the front office personnel issues that they've quite publicly had in the last couple of years have ended up sticking to him all that much. I don't know how to account for that necessarily but here. We are thought five more years five years. I didn't do the terms but well. And and now they'll have a now they have a gm opening promoted in addition to extend it so. But i think they should let us do it. Yeah like what do you think you think we'd you think we can do it. I think we could do it. I have a plan. My plan involves. I'm spending some money. There's other stuff too. But i think they should let us do it jer. Dipoto podcasts. Could keep doing this presumably. You'd have to write another book though. So yeah yeah pretty sure. I've said on a podcast. That like the only reason i would want to work for a baseball team to talk about it. Which if anyone has ever heard that means good work for baseball team so you could. You could submit. You could submit the only rule as part of your resume. And then you know in twenty twenty two leaky you. You mean sam. We could tag team it. We have stuff to write about. We just Would have to wait a couple years. Presumably i'm not sure that book actually made us appear qualified to run a baseball team. I like the book. But so i also wanted to talk to you about well. One pitcher jerry. Dipoto traded not too long ago in this is in relation to the padres pitching situation which we will talk about with eric shortly but to padres pitchers we haven't talked about much lately if at all blake snell while you were away turned into a pitcher who goes seven or eight innings. Yeah that's that's happened and it's interesting how that's happened. It doesn't seem as if the padres pitching coach changes necessarily unlocked something smell. He has actually been pitching pretty well for a while. And this is really dating back to late. June like on june sixteenth. He had a five point seven two era he was going three or four innings every time seemingly he was just not really contributing to that rotation but since then he has pitched very very well and he has pitch fifty nine and two thirds innings. Eleven starts with a two point eight seven. Era he has struck out seventy four batters in those fifty nine into thirds innings. And lately he has been just dominant. He pitched seven two thirds against the dodgers in that while sixteen inning game and then he came back in his most recent. Start this week and shut out the diamondbacks for seven innings with ks and it seems like he has adapted his approach and brian. Menendez wrote about this for baseball prospectus. Recently so i will link to his analysis but it seems as if snell has just kind of consolidated his pitch mix and he has gone away from his changeup like. He's basically stop throwing that he throws a lot more sliders he's Just gone to that pitch all the time. He's throwing more for seamers. He's been like almost a fastball. Slider guy in some of his most recent starts in. It seems to be serving him quite well and he's also not knipling. He is throwing pitches in the strike. Seven like i was looking at fan graphs rolling averages and just over his past seven starts he has like almost a fifty two percent zone rate. He is thrown more than half of his pitches in the strike zone. Which is i think. The highest rate in his career over a span of that length. And that's not what you're used to see with flakes. No you're used to seeing him. Nibble and try to get guys to chase and seemingly now that he is trusting his best pitches or certain pitches he is also comfortable coming into the zone with them and getting swings and misses anyway. And then i guess that's paying dividends in terms of his pitch efficiency and helping him go deeper into games. He left that diamondbacks game with no hitter after seven innings and he had thrown one hundred seven pitches at that point so if they weren't gonna push him past that but just for him to get there that's quite accomplishment for snow so the padres seemingly have kind of pulled out of their nosedive a little bit lately in. He's been a part of that so nice to see. I feel like if you're at one hundred seven you've gone seven innings. You probably have the expectation that you're not going to be left in to try to complete a no hitter rate. Especially if you're blake's now. I want to be even if you're not excel. You're probably like we going to leave this effort to to the rest of the group at this point i feeling that would be. I thought you were going to tell me about austin adams and how he use the other countries pitcher. Yeah so that's kind of the other end of the spectrum in terms of control but has also been very effective. I've thought for a while that we should anoint. A pitcher every year the effectively wild pitcher of the year who best embodies the term. Never really done. Maybe we should do that even retroactively for a few years that kyle bear claw when he was with the marlins cher he really fit the description because he was quite effective even though he was walking. Everyone 'cause he was striking out a ton of guys and austin adams his walk walking a lotta guys but also pumpkin guys just constantly. He is constantly leading the majors in hit by pitch his even though he is a reliever. Who's only pitched like forty five innings. Yup and yet he is hitting guys more often than even starters and it's odd because coming into this year. He had not really done that. He had pitched parts of a few seasons. Two thousand seventeen to twenty twenty. He was with the nationals. he was with the mariners. he was with the padres last year. He totaled forty two innings in those seasons and he told me hit two guys and this year he is thrown almost the same number of innings and he said eighteen and likes nell. He seems to have really gone heavy on the slider stone. Sliders like ninety percent of the time now in his control clearly is not the best with that pitch and so i saw a stat that he has already hit. I think maybe it was sixteen or seventeen guys with sliders. And it's the most in the pitch tracking era that anyone has hit players with one particular pitch type but also he's like in the running for some records which you probably don't really want to have the fewest innings pitched in a season by any previous pitcher who has had at least eighteen..

"Took dry swings on friday for the first time since august eighth when he suffered the injury. Mike trout of the angels. He's been ramping up baseball activities. He's been officially placed on the injured list as of sunday with vaccine side effects. So there's no minimums dave for players who are placed on the cove injured list. So link goria could return in time for the series against the mets this coming tuesday anthony de scallop fani right acl inflammation played catch over the weekend on sunday. He plans to test his ankle. But it didn't show enough improvement to proceed with scheduled bullpen sessions so the giants placed him on the injured list. Here as well for you. Athletic fans chris bassett. He said to go undergo surgery on tuesday again. We talked about him getting hit in the face with the line drive on our last episode. So he's going to have surgery on tuesday to secure displaced bones from his face after being hit in the face man. Goodness man. Best of luck to chris bassett. That's gotta be painful. Also stephen piscotty he had given Piscotty let's see here to quarter sewn shots already this year and it looks like surgery is likely to take care of nagging wrist issues that the outfielder has dealt with dating back to last year. So surgery most likely to take place in the off season for stephen piscotty for the brewers escobar. Escobar accident sunday's game with right hamstring discomfort He was a trade deadline. Acquisition for milwaukee he hit to ninety one with two home runs and eight ten psi in his first twenty games with the club. They hope that he will be date. Today's here moving forward and then freddy peralta right shoulder. Inflammation played catch on sunday for the first time since going on the injured list. He is hoping that history will be the minimum of ten days and that he will be able to return very shortly for the astros. Alex bregman he returned to the field. Friday night going two for four with a grand slam across seven innings while on his minor league rehab in aaa sugarland. He's been sidelined for nearly two weeks after suffering a setback recovering from a left quad straight but bregman said after the game. He's feeling great but a timetable. To return has not yet been established. But houston's offense eating up and they're going to get another big piece with bregman here in the near future. Jose you're kuwaiti right shoulder discomfort. He's on scheduled to return to the rotation. When the rosters expand september first houston could could go with six man rotation for the final month of the regular season once he returns yes monte grande all the white sox tony larussa said. He doesn't expect granddaughter return during their current road trip. Buddy isn't aaa for rehab assignments and it looks like he's going to be back here in the next couple of weeks and then lastly eddie rosario for the braves rosario dealing with a strained abdominal muscle. He's playing almost every day on his rehab assignment at aaa gwen it. So it looks like he could be back in the show here and just a couple of days. So let's wrap up segment number two with some surprising league leaders usually look at stats and standings here on mondays episodes. Well i wanted to condense this a little bit since. I'm going to take up the last two episodes talking about the standings as well as each team in general here so major league baseball most surprising league leaders when it comes to pitching you gotta go with the winds kyle. Kendricks has fourteen wins for a team. That's fifteen games under five hundred. Your league leader in wins is coming from a sub five hundred team which is pretty crazy to think about you. Also have austin adams who leads major league. Baseball in hits by pitches with sixteen so adams had trouble controlling the ball. Offensively the most pickoffs goes to ryan weathers of the padres. He's got eight pickoffs this year. He's only thrown seventy eight innings. So that's that's a lot for that little a dime there and then you also have some hitting stats here. Caught stealing in the national league jazz. Chisolm junior the marlins leads the league with seven for the national league but the surprises in the american league which shohei ohtani. He's been caught eight times this year. He does have eighteen steals but otani eight times is also very high when it comes to getting hit by a pitch. Jonathan indie of the reds leads the national league with eighteen this season and in the american league you have mark cannot of the oakland a.'s with twenty two. So he's at the top of the list and then your leader in sacrifice bunches adam wainwright of the cardinals with twelve. So the pitcher is usually lead that that category but wainwright at the top of the list as he's been impressive with twelve so one other thing to talk about the baltimore. Orioles lost their eighteenth consecutive game on sunday. Now is that the longest single season losing streak of the past sixty years. Actually there's a few teams ahead of them now. They're creeping up here on the list because it's eighteen and county but ahead of them. You have the two thousand five. Kansas city royals who lost nine thousand nine straight games. The nineteen seventy-five tigers also lost one thousand nine in a row that season. The one thousand nine hundred sixty nine montreal expos had twenty losses. Consecutively the nineteen eighty. Eight baltimore orioles. So that's not even a franchise record for baltimore as the eighty-eight orioles lost twenty one consecutive times. But you're all time leader. The nine thousand nine hundred sixty one philadelphia phillies with twenty three straight losses. That season so baltimore would have to get swept to additional times in order to have that record of twenty three consecutive losses. So matt just a tough three weeks there in baltimore orioles fans what are listening. I appreciate you guys hanging in there. Because i know i'd be on the football season and talking about the baltimore ravens if i were you guys so that does it for segment number two here of the gsm see baseball. Podcast brought to you. "And they didn't pay him so much that he has to get it but the gave him you know money and they have him. I think they give all their players money. They you know he's getting paid three million dollars next year. The club option for twenty twenty. I think they'd like to try to see if they can get him back into kind of a good spot so that way he could be there closer next year. That's so gross I don't know that it's gonna work because it it feels like he's really good until there's pressure on him and then he just falls apart which is weird because he was so good in toronto but I think flora is the one who ends up kind of winning out of these three but honestly it could be any of them now. Bender does have the same sort of Bednarz concerns with regards to being the youngest of the bunch and they might not want to run up some saves for arm. Which again is the stupidest thing ever that we have to consider that but we do He did get a save earlier in the month. I remember when yemi was fatigued. I believe and then he. He was indeffinite the following game but he blew that save and then one it or not the falling game his next appearance which was to two days later. I'm a in. This may be foolhardy me. I'm a little bit less worried about the arbs stuff this year than previous years. Because it's going to be a new. Cba and some of that stuff could change. Well he won't be our next year though anyway. But i just mean in general that entering into my equation that okay. That's fair to because that there is who knows atop larbi what's going to happen with how arbitration is structured and work moving on refused because we know the players like change. How god it'd be so nice that they changed because stuff like that that encourages not deploying your players. In the best way angers me so much lingers the players they players hate it because that's why they don't get extra years of service time because they're diamond miners and all that stuff could change it. I think the teams know that some of that stuff might change. So i don't know that teams are going to leverage a soft quite as much rest this year as maybe they would in previous seasons that being said i still think this is kind of a little bit of a mass and i don't know what to make of it and so i'd rather kind of throw my darts on situations that i feel a little bit more comfortable. We have a idea of what the answer is. I mean it's just so annoying benders so fun to watch. He's got forty eight strikeouts in thirty seven innings. I still went form. You know I did have some some conditionals on flora just in case i didn't really consider learn. If you're a person that likes bed on the talent then benders the guy you bet on Yeah i tend to in these kind of muddled situations bet on what the organization wants to do or would like i agree with the mantra that You know baseball. Hq mostly pioneered bet on bet on skills nut rolls but when it comes to causing you kind of have been on the roll Because we've seen because of the stupid stuff that that the talent doesn't always win out and and we've also with the way bullpens have evolved. We've realized that the closer isn't necessarily the best reliever anymore anyway. Back in the day you could really do the bet on skills not roles because teams were really looking to put their best guy in the ninth and that's it but now we talk firemen and stuff a key. Firemen can be much more important. It can be much better than your best reliever like. I don't think. San diego uses their best reliever closer. I don't think it's martin manson. He's capable he's doing their third best. But yeah. I would like pomeranz pagan when he's not given up. Yeah austin adams daniel hudson there so yeah I agree there. Let's let's keep moving on. Then let's go to arizona's situation After not getting a stay for seventeen months So he can get one for like an entire mind. He was racking up this month but of course he got traded because he's like thirty eight now thirty seven years old and so yeah he got. He got six justice month. He didn't have a single. Save all year. Then then rips off six this month that's blown. One he could. He could have gotten seven So the leaves. He leaves that place a mass. I mean it was a mess when he was there but he leaves. That puts a mass. Most folks believe that. It's bird unchallenged. Do you agree. Tower clipper unchallenged. On at least for the first shot not that he would lob i think yeah i think for the first shot It is him because we didn't even put sale next to anybody else in that bullpen. For russia's. i say we jason martinez doing the excellent work in john becker. They didn't put seattle next anybody else so they whereas i'm miami. They did it for four guys off. We've seen that before. They just put clipper so gm burden as long as he can be somewhat effective. I think that he'll be the guy. Stefan crichton if he can never figure things out. I the manager. They are really likes him. And with what about the guy who was in the Zach grank trade as a starter but it certainly welcome b. bukowski. Yeah dallas cowboys but.

Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney
Why The San Diego Padres Are The Big Winners Of The Trade Deadline
"Normally we go through a list of winners and losers. But by acclamation, we'll say the San Diego Padres, where the winner Sarah, what did you think about what the padres did? Oh my gosh. So I have been embedded in spreadsheet since like eleven thirty this morning trying to really quantify exactly what they did and I think I have the stat here. So they've acquired eight players who will go through the mall you know, but they've acquired eight players who played in the majors at some point this year. So that's everybody you've heard about except for Austin Adams who's hurt came from the Mariners I am ninety, eight percent shore. That's the most. League talent acquired in the month of the deadline because some of these trade were a couple of days ago by any team in that just tell you exactly what you need to know it is just there are so many players Clovinger we have Mitch Moreland Alison Nola Jayson Castro. Dan altuva. Trevor Rosenthal, Greg Allen until it will so lot lot mainly tolerate there What do you think it does for the padres. I would say this, the dodgers are still the team to be, but I think four days ago the dodgers were so far ahead of every other team in the National League they were the overwhelming favorite to win the NFL caveat anything can happen to the playoffs but now to me, padres are a very strong number two team in the national they gave up a lot. They gave up a lot of future depth, but they're better in two thousand twenty Mike is going to be around presumably for a couple more years. So they're going to be better in twenty, twenty one they were already the most exciting team. I think baseball this year, and now they ratcheted up another notch.
