"Of the shooting, Alex's parents Tom and Terry Sullivan came to StoryCorps. I remember when I called my mom and I told her there's been a shooting and Alex was in the theater. That was the first time I ever heard her cry. The day he was born, I told her from the hospital that she had a grandson, and then 27 years to the day, I had to call her again and tell her that her grandson had been murdered. You know, when the theater reopened, we were there. I knew you had to go. And especially on his birthday. I remember saying, we're going to celebrate Alex's birthday. The way that we always have, and so we'll go and sit in Alex's seat that he was murdered in row 12, C 12. That's where he was, and that's where we will always be. A few days ago, the sullivans came back to StoryCorps. They still mark Alex's birthday by sitting in row 12 seat 12 in the century aurora theater. One time, I walked in and there were three kids in those seats. So I sat in the row in front of them, and about 5 minutes later, the three of them just got up. It was almost like he gave a little nudge. Yeah. Hey guys, my dad's here. You've got to move. And so he's in the important places to us. Why do you want Alex to be remembered? I think you're doing a pretty good job now. Not letting people forget. Not just Netflix. But every person that has been murdered, the least I can do in each of these kinds of situations is read their names. We should know what they meant to their family and their communities. I still do kind of struggle more people are dying by gun violence than they were ten years ago. I have to suppress the utter anger that I have because all I can think about is how Molly our granddaughter is never going to know her uncle Alex. But at the end of the night, we have to be hopeful

Is Joker a 'Dangerous' Movie? Director Todd Phillips Responds to Critics
"Director Todd Phillips Take on the jokers starring Joaquin Phoenix is bringing bringing up a now familiar conversation what is Hollywood's role when it comes to gun violence and how should the industry respond to concerns about excessive violence in film NTV Brent Lang is executive editor for film immediate variety and he wrote about why the families of the twenty twelve Aurora theater shooting are concerned about joker oh car. Hey Brent Hi John can you I set up a little bit of the premise of joker and how violence is part of its story sure so joker is is an origin story and it it takes a look at this man who's a mentally disturbed man living with his kind of crazy mother and a very rundown rundown part of the city and he has kind of aspirations of being a stand up comic and you know without giving too much away those those dreams don't come to pass and instead he kind of gradually loses touch with reality and a lot of violence ensues and but as part of that he kind of inspires this anarchic uprising in Gotham city and it is it is a very violent very bloody very R a-rated comic book adaptation so how much of the premise or the violence is behind the families of the Aurora shooting victims to write this letter and Dan share their concerns well as far as I can tell the families of the Aurora shooting victims have not seen the film they're they're reacting to kind live coverage of the pitcher and and they say that you know when their letter they say that that they've heard that it presents the character as a as a protagonist with a sympathetic origin origin story and and that gave them pause and they're they're very clear though they're they're not asking Warner Brothers to not release the movie they say that they support the right to free speech and free expression but then they also sort of take a page out of Spiderman and say with with great power comes great responsibility so they're using this film to Urge Warner Brothers and its parent company Warner Media and I suppose at and T. as an extension extension to become more involved in the issue of gun reform and they're asking for the company to support of certain in sort of specific means of of social engagement they're asking them to end political contributions to candidates who who take money from the NRA they're asking them to used their their clout and their platform to pressure Congress to act for gun reform and they're also asking them to help fund survivor funds and and gun violence intervention programs and it seems like the conversation around joker is part of a broader conversation around violence in Hollywood your or editor in chief. Claudia eller wrote an op Ed for variety around the time that blunt house productions film the hunt was dropped by universal pictures. The headline on that piece is why it's time for Hollywood to reconsider the amount of violence on screen so even if the families from Aurora are not really asking Warner Brothers to limit the violence that is in their movies it does feel like these things are starting to percolate up and there might might be a bigger conversation. That's either about to happen or is already happening. Absolutely I mean I think that that this is a conversation that that's been happening for a while. It's interesting I talked to someone named Igor Volk Street and he runs an organization called guns down America and he helped craft this letter and I actually asked him sort of specifically if they were implying that that there was a connection between onscreen violence and and and gun violence and he was very careful and he said actually science doesn't back that up and that that they aren't contending that but just because he thinks that it doesn't mean that other people don't and I think it's a debate that's going to continue through the release of joker and onto the release of other violent movies that Hollywood backs. I WANNA play a a little bit of what Joker Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix said about this issue in an interview with the website jeon. There have been a lot of pieces written by people people who proudly state they haven't even seen the movie and they don't need to. I would just argue that you might want to watch the movie you might want to watch it with an open mind. The movie make statements about lack of love childhood trauma lack of compassion in the world and I think people can handle that message. It's it's it's uncomfortable. It's uncomfortable for for all of us. I think we all are aware of these issues and we are concerned. I think that's why we talk about it I. I don't think that we can be afraid to talk about it so they're offering this defense but it feels like this debate is probably GonNa get a lot more interesting really soon around movies like this absolutely and as you mentioned it already existed around the hunt now I will just say that as somebody. I'm not a critic but I did see joker and I can't say that I thought that it had a lot of profound things to say about violence in America or what what what Spurs people to violent action I didn't think that that anything there was was terribly deep to me it sort of played like a riff on Scorsese films like taxi driver or King of comedy movies that had a little more depth but that's my personal opinion and is it possible Zabol that this whole debate could affect the way the film has received might have some consequences. I think it definitely could it could have consequences on the box office. If people you know have safety concerns of some kind I it could have consequences on its awards chances because joker is being positioned as an awards play by Warner brothers Joaquin Phoenix who stars as the title character's was received a great deal of claim but if the film becomes too controversial potentially not that that kills its its Oscar chances so there's a lot of impact financially critically in in terms of awards Brent Lang is is the executive editor for film and Media at Variety Joker opens in theaters October fourth brand. Thanks much for coming back on the show. Thanks for having me.

Not so in Kendrick lunged at him, you just slowly a senior told NBC news Kendrick, siege her life, and he shot Kendrick giving all of us enough time to get underneath our desks to get ourselves safe into run across the room to escape. He did what he had to do that was my son's nature that was who he was going to protect people in his parents telling us, they weren't surprised by their sons, courage. It has Spiring engineer only days away from graduating Kendrick love to tinker. We've run a robotics team. And we built robots together. We worked on cars together that was relief. And I love that. I wanna make something very very clear. Kendrick Custodio died a legend Kendrick was there. He was a. Foot away from the shooter and instead of running the opposite direction. He ran towards it. Eighteen-year-old Brendan Bailey marine recruit help Kendrick fight off the attacker along with a couple of others. I'm not a victim. I I refuse to be victim. Kendrick refused to be victim. The other students refused to be a victim. And I will live the rest of my life. Whether it be this situation situation in any other situation counter. "Two of them have been responders to mass casualty events wanted to a school shooting and wants to the Aurora theater. And but all all three of our swat officers. And they've they've seen some stuff and the one thing they know is they'll never be there on time. So what they impart to these stop stop there for a second. Because I I I've spoken with some of your trainers. And that statement is when I heard one of them say saying, no matter how great I am whatever happens. I know I will not be there on time. We'll be there. But there's no way that I will be there in time to save your kid's life. That's why you've got to be trained, and it gave me shivers when he said this because it it really. Hit me that the responsibility is right there at the moment of impact the moment when some kid goes nuts and starts shooting in that swat guy. He's trained to be there. But he's never there. He has to get there. Right. Yeah. It it gave me chills. Just hearing you say that again, it's think about that. You have you have these guys who respond to really bad stuff and what they want. They want not to have to respond to really bad stuff because somebody stopped it before it got really bad are one instructor who was a day to respond to the Aurora theater. I mean think about think about what these law enforcement people saw that has affected them forever. They don't they don't want any more of those scenes, they want these things stopped. Whether it's by a law enforcement officer that just happens to be there or a an arm. To citizen. The CDC study says that you know, there's a couple of million instances a year of defensive use of firearms. They don't want big ugly things to have to go to so. Yeah, they take it really seriously. So, you know, it goes everything from mindset to firearms skills, lifesaving trauma skills and at the end of the class. These the school staffers. They have to pass a firearms tests that exceeds the tests that law enforcement has to pass in handgun proficiency to get out of the academy it exceeds that test it's such a. That's such an important aspect of it that. Let me play that that question a different way. Let's assume that a cop wanted to go be a teacher. So here is a uniform cop. He's trained to be a cop. And by the way, he he wants to help out by part time teaching in a in a school. And you say, do you mind if he comes in uniform and carries his gun, the answer would be no that's beautiful. Great. Yeah. Let the cop come in. And and teach whatever class it is nets terrific. Because now you're training the cop to do the teacher's job. And you feel comfortable with him being armed what you do in faster training is you train the teacher to be more proficient than the cop. So this idea that not we'll be shooting each other or it'll be compatible. Neom. It'll be awful, wait a second. If you don't if you're okay with a copying in the school. Then shouldn't you be okay? With a teacher. Who has trained up to end above the shooting level of a police officer? Yeah. And to be very clear there is one narrow skill set or two if you include the medical a very narrow skill set that we're teaching them. We'll never teach them the other million things that law enforcement has to do they'll never clear a drug house. They'll never arrest the suspect. I'll never draw those lines out in the street when there's a car. Never going to pull somebody over for speeding. They're not gonna learn how to use a a radar gun to catch speeders not gonna investigate a burglary. They're not going to be working a mess case. But this one little narrow slice that they have to deal with that cops have to deal with they will get traded. There's a a perfect, and I do believe as perfect as you can get analogy to what armed pilots go through for their training, and they become a law enforcement official on their planes. And I forget the name of the of the the the air marshal programme. Yeah. The air marshal programme, but it's it's it's an out growth of that where they train citizen pilots to carry a gun with the sole purpose of stopping a hijacker. So this is the exact same thing as teaching a teacher to stop a mash shooter. Sure. Yeah. And and what's interesting, John, and we use the word teacher is sort of shorthand. And sixty percent of the folks who come through are not teachers in a classroom. They have other positions where they're not. They're not stationary in one classroom in forty percent of teachers. But it's so interesting to hear some people say we can't trust teachers. QB low to be lawfully armed highly trained to protect live. And I look at them and say, we are trusting our children their minds. I need I need to take a breather. Sure. We get back. You are looking for some help in funding this, and it's it's a great plan. I want to get into the detail that Laura karnal is with us from faster training in Colorado who trains teachers to stop the bullets and stop the bleeding. I'm in for Michael Brown. Keep it right here. You're on KOA NewsRadio. Rocky spring training is back to the spring in center field. Catch the first game Saturday. With coverage from Scottsdale beginning at noon on KOA.

I'm group of lawmakers from both parties we'll sit down together for the first time today to start working on a deal to fund the government and tackle border security. They have a February fifteen deadline to get something to President Trump. Get ready to pay a little bit more. When shopping in Scottsdale point, one percent sales tax increase takes effect, Friday and will stay in place for the next ten years. You're never more than fifteen minutes away from today's top stories on Arizona's news station. KTAR news. KTAR in-depth well this past Sunday morning. A thirty nine year old pregnant woman who was a lift driver was stabbed to death allegedly by a twenty year old passenger who just wanted to steal her car and not only did the baby she was carrying die. She left behind two little kids right now. Neither Uber nor lift allows drivers to carry firearms. Even if it is to protect themselves, by the way, lifts lifts policy goes even farther than that. They say there are many items that could be considered weapons besides firearms like stun guns, knives, slingshots and tasers lifts lift reserves soul judgment on what else may constitute a weapon that their driver may be carrying. And joining us this morning is on the KTAR newsmaker line, retired Phoenix police sergeant and author of twisted. But true Darren Birch Darren I just thought this is what the statement that lift put out. I couldn't believe it. They said, of course, they said there. I was shocked and deeply deeply saddened the safety of the lift community is our top priority. The passengers account has been permanently deactivated. Really? That's the best. You can come up with do you think they need to change their policy and let the drivers be able to carry a some type of weapon? First foremost, my deepest condolences to that family murdered that so. Hey. As far as Halsey versus law. I'll bet that stand as it is you know, you can violate policy. You're allowed to violate palsy. You just lose your job. As far as weapons I may differ from a lot of my police colleagues. I've seen situations where people that are not trained with a gun the gun number one can be used against them. Number two. They can shoot when it was a non shoot scenario. So I do I do have concerns when it comes to having a gun. But again, if you're trained, you don't need me tell you whether it should or shouldn't have a gun with you to protect yourself. One second. But they even go beyond this. They say stun-guns tasers, they even say slingshots, I really like one of the best tools for defense is Mace. I, you know, there's a really good chance that you know maze. Could have you know, prevented this type of situation possibly. But I have a problem with a gun because if you had the gun will you be aiming at the person, you're not gonna ain't gonna every client that comes in. But yeah, it's really right now, unfortunately is after the fact is hard to really come up excuse me with you could something like that protected the person, but there are things that you can do first of all let me just say this is one of the most dangerous professions. Just driving is one of the top ten most dangerous profession, a taxi driver on top of that leading a stranger in your car is inherently dangerous job is not for everyone and the vetting process. Does not stop nutcases. I mean, look at Aurora theater Columbine Tucson, although scenarios were nuts have shot and killed people. You know, a vetting in and of itself will not stop this. So some really quick safety tips by can you should always lock your car. If you do decide to do this job. This is a great job for ex cops, by the way, if you do. Do you should always lock your car when you pull up pull up like a cop would tactically? Your your car is locked you pull up a distance away. So that the person the passenger the client has to walk towards you. It allows you an assessment period, you can see if they're looking around in a furtive movement possibly looking for witnesses or potential witnesses. That's a red flag. If they have that yard stare past you, they just come up creepy. Trust your intuition, even Uber under under safety caps. I've looked through alive it's mostly geared towards the passenger. But the one that I loved was saved tip. Number eight is said trust, your intuition. And so kind of a case you just don't don't pick the person up or if you don't feel comfortable this drop them off before you're supposed to drop them off. Right. Absolutely, right. Yes. Thank you. Thank you. You're you should never pick them up in an unsafe place. It's the alley in the rear. Nope. Yes. The front with a light. So yes, Fuster intuition and all things and again the phone I love the phone because you could take a photo they have an objection. They angry at you. Then they're probably not a good person backseat. Definitely drop off at that point. All right. Thanks a lot.
