"Lying there. That's right. That's right. That's right that that's what he said. It's one of the great things about later we talked about it. You know the diversity and different kinds of guests that you could have. Weisel and you could have soupy sales the next night. Yup. Barry Goldwater and then smokey Robinson and Don rickles and And and Ted Ted Williams and I made the variety the sheer variety of guests and you always we talked last time you were here about that. Wonderful Anthony. Quinn. Moment. You obviously, we're very good at that. You had a gift for getting and still do forgetting these people to open up for for trusting you. As as Quinn did in that wonderful moment. Yeah. Well, I think Anthony Quinn before he told that story about his son and how that affected his playing the the signature seen in Zorba the Greek. Yeah. He said before he delivered that story which he said he had never talked about publicly before he said, well, you've been very nice to me and you seem to honestly WanNa. Know Allied about me. So this was the word to use so I'll confess to you. That I live with the pain with the pain of losing a son. He said his son died when he was only two or three years old he didn't tell me how I later found out that the boy drowned in WC fields swimming. Cool. Yeah. They late next door to each other. Yeah. In the late nineteen thirties or early forties and then Quinn went on to describe how he couldn't accept the boy's death the adored the boy of course, and so he created a life for him and he imagined that he had grown up and he lived in San Francisco he was an architect and he could communicate with them talk within talk about. Their respective lives and so he was conjuring up is notions about the son he lost when as it turns out that scene at the end of Zorba, the Greek Zorba's talking about losing his little son Dimitri and he says that the funeral everyone was weeping but I got up and danced and I just stumbled across this. I said what thinking of when you played that scene uttered those words and that's one folded his arms across his chest with that granite face look like if you go on Mount Rushmore Agendas Chin out and kind of steel themselves to a deep breath. Because he wasn't a hundred percent. Sure. I guess that he was going to go there and then he said, well, you seem to modern a lot about neon confess and then he told the story. Yeah. You know you and I talked about this on the phone Bob and you're proud of those interviews as you should be I meant and never probably never a better McCartney interview. That on those on your show score says a two nights with Jerry Lewis. I mean. There's there's so much wonderful stuff there and I will tell our listeners that you can see somebody's including the quin interview on Youtube. Ya You know what's one of the things it's gratifying to me is even the ones that you mentioned like McCartney more George Carlin. John other great one I. I will hear from people who really followed their careers. Knowledgeable. People who will say that was the most definitive. That was the closest to defendant. APSOS. We had the time, but we didn't waste time. And we had too much respect not just me but the producers and the researchers too much respect for the vast majority of people we had on as guests because even though sometimes you had the book somebody, could you fill slot the idea for the overwhelming majority of them was they had to have a body of work they weren't talking about some film they were trying to peddle or book they. Had just written. It was their overall career body of work that brought them there and we had enough respect for that to have done the research on the case of many of them because I'm pop culture fan I was familiar with a lot of it to begin with. But I always did the additional research and a lot of times and you're probably familiar with this phenomenon it is a phenomenon yourself. A few minutes into an interview, the subject can tell this is an all just boilerplate stuff. The same questions I've heard a dozen times or more I can just answer them robotically these people have taken the time and it shown me respect in regard to be really prepared and asked me some interesting things. So I better respond in kind, I better respect this opportunity and beyond my. We strive to do that here as I told you you in, Cavite have been. Profound influences on what we're trying to achieve with this show, and also you're one of us. You know I'm watching with Audrey Meadows last night and. You're pulling out Mrs Manicotti and Carlos Sanchez. You know. You. I know you're not nervous route, your new bribes, the dust exactly ha. Why don't you just wanted to just quit thousand thousand dollars a mare baggage shell going all away. Ninety Nine Thousand Dollar Answer Alice. It's great to see to you interviewing somebody like Audrey Meadows and the thing you're talking about she can tell right away as you say that magical moment five, ten minutes in she knows she's in good hands. She knows she's with somebody who has a genuine affection for her accomplishments and what she's done, and that's why they were in from among other reasons. That's why there were so pleasurable to watch. And people can see that Audrey meadows, interview to it's so much fun. Oh each. Mumble. What once, Carlos? Doing. And how about the end seed right after as they inevitably do Alison Ralph makeup route is insanely jealous because he adores Alice. If any anybody including the ninety year old doorman glances sideways at Alice he goes Berserk Right. But now all is kind of been resolved and they put the record player on and Mambo comes on and gleason starts doing those Leeson dances. With the arms spread out, you know he was he was a Nimble Batman His light on her speed through that whole thing an art carney's ridiculous thing. But you know what Alice told me and you can see it and not seen. She said I decided early on. I said Alison we all meadows. I decided early on I would play alice stationary other than when entering or leaving. I always stood in one place because the set in that kind of living room of their apartment I guess on Canal Street in Brooklyn was small and the icebox and the table in the window and the dresser by the wall it was small and gleason was big both literally and figuratively. Man He played big and Carney was very physical actor if he was in the seat so she just stayed stationary and that was a good counterpoint to all of that motion and energy, and of course, very often the line that she would have would puncture whatever you know Ralph was up to whatever grandiose plans are absurd. He was making then she would just print the bubble with some sarcastic remark, and that's the way she played alice and. Mistake people make watching the honeymooners now is held say, oh, that's so awful where he's threatening to puncher. Yeah, he was threatening to punch her, but it always showed she had the upper hand and he was the more sensible of the two. And that was the way she answered that question even in Nineteen Ninety or ninety one when she was on. That was kind of a question that people want to be to ask, and so I asked that question and she said everyone could see the love everyone knew it was just lost her and he adored her and there was no way. He would ever must a hair on her head, but you can't imagine now. With lyrical correctness being what it is that even in the context of a Sitcom with all the character's motivations understood that you could get away with one of these days. Alice. Zoom to the MON.

She's I think I said last time I saw she was worth. $465 million because of the of the benefit of doing that show, which was not as you know, you've done television. This is not a big deal. You know this is going to the is actually they do five or six minutes time. And each episode is only 21 minutes and with all the advertising and stuff so This is not a lot of work. You get the contract rights to residuals and licensing and none of the other cast members did. She did. Really? Yeah. Audrey Meadows figured it out, and for some reason, the other cast members did not. You know, that's really an interesting bit of information. Wow. So, yeah, but see that happens in that world. Yeah. I would love to a you kidding. You said I love to get into producing tell primetime television. Because that's what Johnny always wanted to do it. So that's what we did. And we did three shows together. I think that's a pretty serious clear Assad talking about working with your friends. This is Joan you're on WGN with Bonnie hunt shown, good morning by Davis rules, one of the funniest thing on television. And I wondered what it was like working with Jonathan winters. Well, I gotta tell you John. I'm so glad you brought that show up because I was offered designing women at the time. Delta Burke, had just left the show was like pop show on television. It was double the amount of money at the same time. They came to me and said that they would they were juniors show Davis rules, which I had been working on the same lot. My greatest incomes person moment, I guess it would be doing play by play being in the booth puts on Santa one of the greatest kind of sweetest men world. If you would like to join us, talk or text. So I'm looking at this list here, and there's a list here and the first one that's on this list is Jeremy jam councilman jam from parks and rec. And and yes, he's an annoying. So unlikely characters there said they said Jenny Humphrey from from gossip girl. Little jay. Little j I could see that. But she had disappeared from that show for two seasons. She was barely on it. Let's see. Andrea Harrison from the Walking Dead. There's a lot of unlikeable characters on the Walking Dead is one of the reasons why I stopped watching that show. Serena joy from the Handmaid's tale, although she gets, you know, I will I will say that she you know in the second season. That character gets to do you can identify with their pain a little bit more than in the first season the first season, she was she was pretty despicable. But in the second season, she was given a lot more to do. Now, here's one for you. Daniel have to tell me about this one. Ted Moesby from how I met your mother. Can you explain why he would be? Yeah. So actually, there was a running counter Terry on the show that the weakest link was the main star. And that was Ted. It was he was the guy telling his kids about how he met their mother. He was the he was the main guy he was the main guy and eventually played it, Josh Ritter. Okay. And. You know that we talked about in the past. How for me that show was really good the first four seasons. And then it just kind of fell off the things in the last five seasons really focused on the annoying aspects of Ted, you know, I four seasons. He was a ran Manta guy. Good friend things like that. And then he just became this whiny will always me life is awful land. Just you know, just somebody and surfable, and nobody wouldn't want to be around let alone to find out who married him because you'd be wondering why did you marry him? So that's what happened. There was the was there an older version that they did that they had like an older Acura playing him in in. You know? And then the rest of the the show itself was a flashback show. Bob, sag it actually was the five th the the old Ted Moesby. Okay. Never saw his face. You saw him talking to the kid to kids and Bob segues, the narrator. He was the voice, right? And they would just put the deck gesture in old man makeup when they see. So I see. Okay. All right. How how did this show end? So the. The mother turns out gets cancer and dies. Oh. They use it as a macguffin for him to end up with the character, Robin. Who was the first Earl he dated in the first season who became part of the group. And so the idea was was like he tells them the story of how I met your mother. But it was really kind of a reason to explain why he's interested in this other woman and wants to start eating again now that okay? All right. Yeah. Classy, geez. All right. Let's go to the phones TV shows with unlikeable characters in them. And this is all came about. Because I watched the first, you know, pilot episode of camping on HBO, which contains some pretty unlikeable characters. The most unlikeable and annoying which is the main character played by Jennifer garner. And if you saw that three one thousand nine hundred seventy one hundred let's talk about more of that. Here's Mike on WGN. Hi, mike. I love your show. Thank you. I tell you. I heard an interesting interview once about Audrey meadows who was a second Alison honeymooners and. Norton. Did the interview and you set one? Norton. Art, learning art Carney. Art carney. Okay. The interviews with art Carney. And they said. Jackie Gleason interviewed for the part. He thought she was looking for the part and it turned out. She ended up to make it to the final three. The part and Jackie Gleason pitcher goals talk to her at her place is she purposely did match our makeup by did not sixer hair. Meter cell phone switches ugliest fashionable Gleason was so impressed by what she went to the extent that you went to go get that interview. She got the job. Yeah. I've heard I've heard that story before it's a it's a great one as a great one. But still is that still is a question when you watch the honeymooners, it's like how did Ralph kramden get this, babe? I mean. All I can say is sometimes given a monkey. Good night. There you go. Let's see. We got some texts coming in unlikeable characters and TV shows seven seven three AJ from the sopranos. Yes. I agree. One hundred percent. Eight one five area code the guy who played the head Nazi. And is isn't that isn't that J J K Simmons? He played the dad in Juneau. He was very likable. Speaking of Jennifer garner. Yeah. That's J K Simmons. I love that. He's the guy who played the head Nazi on is. He's also he's also in the. Bomb, but we are farmers bump bump bump bump bump commercials. So, you know, Dan, you remember the story of when I first when I first when I first watched whiplash with my parents. Yes. Because my dad, you know. My dad, I was hanging out at my parents house, and we're gonna watch some TV we're gonna watch a movie or something. And my dad can't sit down from you know, you know, this about my dad he can't sit down for more than forty five minutes. He's got to get up. He's got to do something. If he's watching sporting event, he'll get up go to the other room and watch part of it and go in the other room. And if he's if he's not interested in what what's happening, he'll get up and leave. He'll just go someplace it'd be like I'm going to I'm going to go to the grocery store and get some things even though if we just went there. So he can't sit and just like watching a movie with him. I mean, he'll do. We're going to the movie theater is fine. Because, you know, like, you're in a movie theater, your, you know, your he can sit for two hours and watch a movie while I mean, he sat for five hours on Saturday because we'll watch too long movies back to back. We saw I man and and bad times at the El royale and enjoyed both of them sat through, but like at home watching a movie is it's like a task to get him to watch it. So I'm like oh whiplash is coming on. We should watch whiplash and my dad's like all right? He did not move. He did not move in which I think is a major major accomplishment, but Waseem directors. I man. Major major accomplishment and my dad freaked out during that movie and loved it. And now anytime J K Simmons is in anything my dad's like oh whiplash because he loved it so much and I seriously he did not move. Once didn't get up. Didn't get coffee didn't go to the bathroom didn't get any. He sat there and watched that whole movie and was like and like freaked out by the end. My dad does not like jazz. You know, what I mean doesn't care about drums any of that stuff? But he loved that movie. Now, my mom had already seen it. So she was getting up and going and doing other things. She'd already watched it on cable, but he had never seen it. And he was just like, whoa. My was blown away by that movie. And at first when I told him what it was about. But this kid who's taking lessons from this Trump teacher he's for in a jazz in jazz school the school of jazz. He's like what? Because that's all those things all those things are like a negative on my dad's list jazz. No. School. No kid. No. Drums, don't care. And it so that says a lot about you know, how you know how unbelievably disinterested. My dad was who's hyper and can't sit down for more than half an hour and just could not pull himself away from that movie. And I remember that was one of the movies that he would go out of his way to recommend people at jewels. He did you know, it was another one that. My dad went nuts and recommended for like weeks after we saw it. He went nuts over ten Cloverfield, laying would Goodman, and Mary Louise with Weinstein he loved that movie. And he went nuts. He told everybody at your. There was one just recently that we saw. Daddy, kept telling people that you got to see, and I can't remember what it was. It was it was a few weeks ago. And he went he went crazy over it. And was telling it wasn't. It wasn't a star is born. It wasn't the last three that we saw it was one that. I thought was good. But he he went nuts and told everybody he kept telling everybody, you gotta see it. Can't remember I can't remember what it was. So, but yeah. Eight one five area code Maude. Yeah, I can see that. I can see a Maude being a little overbearing at times. No question about it. No question about. But like what they were trying to do with that. Which I'm sure everybody knows they were trying to make a liberal version of Archie bunker. Because they had the conservative, you know, Archie bunker, the very very conservative Archie bunker whose politics were. You know, so far writing never made a left turn in his car. But Maude was the liberal version of that. And I can see her being annoying. Two six two area code Brock Meyer. Now, there's this show. I've never seen. I hear good things about it. Have you ever seen it? I have not it's the sports announcer. He plays. It's a blanket on Hank plays sports announcer. And and I hear really good things about I've just never watched it. That's another one of those that slips under the radar for me. Seven or eight area code my unlikeable characters Ernest t bass, it was his limited vocabulary annoying laughing. His tendency to throw rocks and windows every appearance. He's the cousin Oliver of of the Andy Griffith show. Sometimes I feel bad for the kid who played the cousin Oliver. You know what I mean? It's not his fault. He got a job. You know, we had him on bell show wants, and he was pretty cool. He took it in stride seemed like a pretty cool guy. Martin in Bolingbrook, Jon Cryer and two and a half men needed to be pummeled see I Don. I don't I don't watch that show. Was was Charlie Sheen likable on that show. What have you ever seen the show? Just a couple of things. I think it's it's kind of like two heads of a coin you got the Jon Cryer who's just so mealy mouth just annoying versus Charlie Sheen. Who's just so rude that you know, what? I mean. Like, yeah. Obviously that contrast. All right. Six three could Brandon from the TV show fosters he swoops in and fallen falls. Falls in love with his adoptable foster. He is just this weird unlikeable character who falls in love for no reason whatsoever. I don't know that. I don't know that. All right. All right. Let's get to more annoying characters and more unlikeable characters that you found in TV shows three.
