"The coming days and the big game parking spaces in Los Angeles are being sold for more than $6000 each As fans try to secure their spot just days before the big game I'm Mike Bauer At the Beijing Olympic Games Nate baumgartner and Lindsey John cabela's win gold for the United States and the team mixed snowboard cross event for giacomo's her second gold medal of the games entering Saturday Americans have captured 5 gold 5 silver and one bronze for a total of 11 medals Meanwhile the U.S. men's curling team bounced back from a loss to Sweden with a 9 7 victory over Great Britain the men's curling team continues round Robin play against Norway the U.S. women's curling team continued to roll through the round Robin with an 8 four win over China The American schedule to take on green Britain later today Continuing their northern labor road trip the islanders fall short to the Edmonds and Euler's three to one the oilers were playing their first game under interim head coach Jay woodcroft Dave tippett was fired on Thursday the oilers have really been struggling They've only won 6 of their last 21 since December 3rd and the nabo villiers score the lone islander's goal on the defeated Manhattan 75 66 iona upset by Siena 70 to 64 But the Bloomberg sports update I'm Tom Rogers This is masters in business with Barry riddles on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is James Anderson he is a partner at Bayley Gifford where he runs the FTSE 100 listed Scottish mortgage investment trust fund It's about 23 and a half $1 billion last I checked He has generated returns over the past two decades of over 1700% Bailey Gifford also manages about $470 billion James Anderson welcome to Bloomberg Thank you It's a pleasure to be with you Let's talk about your career You join belly Gifford back in 1983 tell us how you found your way into finance and how did your financial career begin Barry I think it's combination of a fairly normal British establishment story with a few twists I came from a very medical family I didn't much care for the idea of being a doctor although everybody assumed that because I wasn't remotely clever enough which used to be a bit I did a history degree at Oxford which failed may not have been relevant And I then spent a couple of years at university abroad in particular a year at Johns Hopkins and Bologna in Italy which was originally set up to use for the CIA spent on the Italian Communist Party that evolved by then But it gave me a first for hearing different interpretations So people from approximately 40 different countries and really made me a great deal more curious than I was when I was being talked down straight lines at Oxford Quite interesting So your Bailey Gifford in 83 how do you eventually become the manager of the Scottish mortgage investment trust which dates back to practically the turn of the last century That's right To be all these barriers I think that some of the events in the early years of Scottish mortgage quite fascinating You might be intrigued to read for instance it's accounts of Nike 29 30 when it was much more concerned about which member of the Scottish middle class this was going to be appointed to the board than it was by what was happening on Wall Street It's account of why Canada and Argentina were more interesting than America was interesting backstories for many years But I've always thought that investment trusts are a fantastic instrument And that's come across even more in recent years Because our freedom to go where we want and invest in whichever form we want and to try and offer at low cost to retail investors has been something that I really value And so the unpopularity of that form which existed back in 1983 It was just a fascinating project to try and get involved and to gradually see the benefits of it And I much admired my predecessor max wood who had the same first for gross investing Basically gives him made a huge mistake Because in the late 1970s max was by far utmost outstanding investor And because so many of our assets were in the UK at that time Max was persuaded to be in charge of the UK market When his heart was an America And I think Scottish mortgage and Vader gets a right speed further on Woods if we'd revert that last year you happen to say fund management was irretrievably broken Explain that a little bit That's a fascinating quote Yeah well very interested to pursue this Follow-up questions from you Barry because I think it's a critically important issue I think fundament has inherently become inward looking And you know this as well as I do people measure themselves by how they do to their comparators If I go back to the early days of stock markets what we were in the business of was helping to create great companies So we're going to move society as well as investors onwards And I think that we've lost that sense of purpose over the years So that is absolutely central to how I see it I would evidence it by not just all the type of short run performance statistics and short run media coverage there is But by the lacerating overall facts that both in Britain and America for a very long decades now more money has been given back by companies in the quoted markets than has been raised It's become a machine for recycling rather than machine for creation Now I could go on but fundamentally I think that is a great trouble and this led us to have to.

"You're in charge of game 5. What we got. Yeah, going Indiana, Michigan state, a couple of teams that really, really, really need to need a dub here. Let me check out this Ken palm line real quick. I think it is Indiana minus four, so that's interesting. No, no, no. It's Michigan state minus four. That makes a lot more sense. Because Michigan state is the home team in this game. So Michigan state minus four at home against an Indiana team that, you know, who's playing for them. I mean, I think those 5 guys who were suspended are back, but they are back. They have been reinstated. And by the way, Mike Woodson seemed to suggest that the reason they were suspended was because they blew curfew. And he didn't come out and straight up say that they were going to return to their encore roles. He kind of was ambiguous about if they were going to be immediately part of the rotation or play they're saying minutes, you know? Yeah, yeah, I mean, we'll see the game, by the way, tips at three 30 eastern on Saturday. It's going to be on Fox. Yeah, we'll see who plays and how much, but my understanding is they're available. And I thought, I thought it was noteworthy. If this really is just a blown curfew, like to take 5 players out of your off your roster for a game, I guess it was at northwestern that you need as it pertains to you instead of a tournament resume. I think that says something about Mike Woodson that I don't think is often attached to quote unquote NBA guys. Because sometimes when an NBA coach finds himself coaching college basketball, one of the things you'll hear, not 100% of the time, but often is they don't care about academic stuff. They don't care about any of the stuff that some college coaches really do seem to care about. They're just basketball coach. They're not trying to turn boys into young men or whatever that cliche is. They're just, you know, they just go to the basketball team the way they've coached their basketball team at the professional level. My point being for a first year college coach to actually suspend 5 players for curfew? If it is actually curfew, I don't want to say it's impressive because I don't even know what that means. I just, it stood out to me. I don't know if I would have done it. Given where my season is at right now and what my fans want from me and that it's February and every game is important. I don't know. I just thought it said something about Mike Woodson and I think probably something positive about Mike Woodson. Yeah, I was surprised. I mean, two starters, it was Xavier Johnson and Parker Stewart, both starters who were among that 5, two other guys who were role players and then Christian lander who sometimes plays. He was among that group as well. So yeah, definitely a bold move. I'm going Michigan state. I don't think they're going to lose consecutive home games. I think they've struggled recently. They've kind of, they're kind of in the spot right now where they're legitimacy isn't question. They're doing a reverse izzo, where they're seeming to backslide. As we get deeper into the season and I don't know that that I just don't think that's going to continue. I think they're going to get it done at home here. And I think there's some questions. I mean, just for me about this situation with Indiana, where I don't know that I fully trust the best version of Indiana to show up in the first game after this suspension situation. So I'm going to yeah. Indiana has lost two straight, Michigan state, as you noted, has also lost two straight. This is important for both teams. You know what? I'll take Indiana plus the points. I think Michigan state wins the game, but I think it'll be a competitive gain pretty much from start to finish. And I don't guess I'd be shocked if Indiana went to the breslin center and won given that we just watched Illinois or I mean, we just watched. Wisconsin go to the breslin center and win. So I'll take Indiana plus the points and then by Saturday afternoon we'll know for sure either the Internet will be working perfectly throughout the state or they'll be having bandwidth problems again. It's tough to tell. And David Kabul haven't even wider lead. And you are wearing us out in the final four on one. Thank you for being here. I appreciate it. It's always good, not good when norlander is away. I don't mean it that way, but it's nice to have somebody reliable and of quality to sit in that other box across from. So that means a lot, Gary. You know, people need to know how important you are. I heard you guys talking with Sam bassini a couple weeks ago. And Sam was just lavishing you with praise for the fact that he's that he was once employed by CBS. And I need to give you a similar shout out too. I mean, I was like, man, you know, Gary needs some love because, you know, I hit you up a couple years ago, I was like, hey what do you know about this? And you know, you didn't even know me that well. I mean, I've been on your show a handful of times and obviously ran in the meeting at this media market and you put in a word, got my resume to the top of a pile somewhere and here we are. So I appreciate you. Well, you're welcome. I didn't know you too well, but I knew your work. And for these purposes, that's what I needed to know. I was like, this is because your background is vastly different than say Sam bes background. You know, had never worked at a traditional newspaper, never been on a beat. He's awesome, but like you guys come from totally different places. And I just remember when we had an opening reaching out there, you know, after being in contact with you, reaching out to the bosses. And I actually said, hey, this guy lives in Memphis. I don't know if you want another guy who lives in Memphis. But he's good. And I bet you you're not gonna have a more qualified candidate than David. So just take a look at it and then you guys take it from here. So I'm not gonna take credit for hiring you 'cause I didn't do that. I don't have that kind of power, but I did endorse. I did endorse you, and I'm glad I did, because otherwise, I have no idea who I'd be talking to right now. Yeah, and you wouldn't know that Julius Randle and Keller booth, the attention of the same high school. I tell you, that's not something norlander would have come with. It's not something that would have had for me. Chelsea David dowdy Chester Chester, South Carolina, shouts to Gary Franklin, legend, shellard now. There's way more of us than there are of them. If you're not subscribed to the YouTube channel, we've been begging you for months, like, come on already. Please, subscribe to the YouTube channel. Dead leg was like, one option is we could do it after the Super Bowl, and I'm like, there's no scenario where I'm doing a podcast after the Super Bowl. What are you talking? Would you like to hear some good news. Yes please alright. Well so apple has actually open all of its stores for the first time since march fourteenth. Twenty twenty you know that feels like more than a year ago but it was not even a year ago that that happened. And if you remember back then was one of the first signs that this coronavirus pandemic was going to be serious and deal a serious impact retail and the workplace now. You can't just walk into any apple store yet. Some are open only for pickup of orders while others require fifteen minutes shopping session but you could check online and figure out. What's going on with your store and i have a story about that up on tech that usa today dot com has the lincoln. And if you wanted to go there but the fact that these types of the stores are all reopened across the. Us is a good sign that we're on the right track to some semblance of retail. Normalcy hopeful interestingly apple really didn't suffer sales wise during the pandemic in the report of its most recent financial quarter which was october to december twenty twenty the company said quarterly sales records for iphones including the iphone. Twelve and sold more apple watches airpod and homepod speakers on the way to a quarterly revenue. Record of one hundred and eleven point four billion dollars. It also said a new record prescription revenue from services like apple music and apple news and apple. Tv actually it's apple tv plus because apple. Tv is a device and ipad. Sales rose thirteen percent to interestingly Tim cook the ceo of apple. Said the company could've done even better if the stores were open. So hopefully this reopening story will spread to other retailers to in the weeks ahead yet definitely. I still remember when we first started hearing all these different stores that were closing. And that's when. I think hit me that this was really a big deal because obviously never hear stores closing. Even you know even like hurricane type stuff. Maybe that's maybe the only other time and even then you might still stuck open but to see like wholesale all these different businesses just had down was. I've never seen anything like it.

Those proceedings now pushed back until Monday. I'm Nicole Davis. It's night side with Dan Raymond WBZ TV, Boston's news radio. All right, we're gonna go to the phone. So again, we have never to the best of my knowledge. Talked seriously about life beyond what we know here on Earth. I know that. That many of you have strong feelings one way or the other. So let's see what you what you think. And I love to get to react to what again Avi Loeb, professor Avi Loeb of Ah, Harvard. University, the chair of the history of Astronomy department, said his book again is extra terrestrial on. It's one that I hope some of you get a chance to read. I know I will try to get one the first sign of intelligent life beyond Earth and Just, uh, it's it's an amazing It's an amazing theory. Let's go to Joe in Belmont, Joe Euronext on night side. How are you tonight, Joe? Joe's Not there. We'll put him on hold. Let's go to John. Let's put your one hold. We lost Joe. Let's go to John in New Bedford. Hi, John. How are you tonight? Yeah. How you doing? I've talked with you before. Sure. This is a This is a This is a question. It's the immense distances between stars and especially between um Galaxies that adds multitudes of distance to it. It's very tough to know it's very tough to get something something strong enough to be able to eat some sort of electronic signal to be able to get anything about to learn anything, however. I write an article you know, within the last year that said, for the first time ever, we've did even just within our galaxy. The Milky Way with everyone was pretty sure that we have detected the fact. That there are planets around some of the sun's that exist in our galaxy. You know, it's a great big galaxy like everything else. So so the galaxy just so everybody, we're all on the same page. Get him in the hole to start. We have you know more about this than I do. So let me just that much more. Let me learn a little bit from you. So we have the solar system that writes for the sun all the way out to Plato. I'm not even sure if Pluto's still planning don't know what it is. Okay, So my question. My question is, I'm not gonna rush. Okay? My question is Always solar system is part I assume of a larger galaxy the Milky Way. Okay, Good fire. We're one of the fringes of the Milky Way. It's one of a disc shaped with a hump in the middle of that has a much more scars that are around us. But we're mad. We're in that Milky way And there are other Galaxies as you've heard the nearest other Galaxies Andromeda. From which we get the movie title. The Andromeda Strain. You know the fictitious idea that someone from Andromeda galaxy some living thing came and infected or earth and everything we don't care about that. We're just saying we're in the Milky Way. And we're one of many, many Galaxies. The more you look, the better. Your detection mechanisms are higher, resolute, higher activity. Your radar has, the more you can detect that there is no limit water space. In fact. They've said that the fact that it keeps trying down getting way confused, then the fact that this separation between the distant Galaxies appear to be speeding away from each other all of the different Galaxies from the creation. You're postulating 14 Million. Whatever. They're saying that that time ago. They're all separate, Ready way. But what they even had to invent a universal gravitational constant. That is really what black matter is. It is something that holds them from continuing to speed faster and faster away. It's speeding away. There are speeding way, but they're slowing a little bit, And there's postulating black matter, But it's the same, but at the same time our relationship Meaning Earth relationship with sun, which is always amazed me with means. Approximately during the course the anywhere from 93 93 years traveling by loves John, You're trying to get a lot in here, and I know what I'm trying to be. Oh, trying to actually have a conversation with, you know, that probably sounds. Far into you, but I'm trying to make a point. If you let me conclude. I want to get your reaction to it. Okay? Yeah. Okay. Well, my reaction is yes. I think there hasn't even know what I'm gonna make. John, I'll listen. You're asking about that. Okay, John, I'd rather have rather hear from you Go ahead, just rather whether I you asked your question was whether Because the are the privy listeners think that there is a possibility of life on other planets. That's all you're really asking, right? That wasn't what I was gonna ask you, but that's okay. Well, I do and I'll give you my reasoning. I read a good article in Scientific American and I'm not in a Saturday. I'm not really even a science major. But I remember that there was a smart kid kind of rigid guy at U Chicago where I went to school back in the sixties and the guy named Deming. There was a guy named Jimmy and I noticed in this article recently in Scientific American. There was an article by a guy named Deming at the University of Maryland. Who and they the article that I was reading said This was the very first time that Anybody had ever even proved in a way that there are other planets. That could be much like ours there that there are other planets. Okay, Okay. Appreciate that. I appreciate I appreciate your call very much. You got to get to some other callers. Thank you very, very much. Appreciate your call. The point. I was trying to make the John and I just so you know, is that yes, I understand the Galaxies and all of that are expanding. And I don't quite get my my wrap my arm my head around it. However, one thing that I think is interesting is we believe that Earth has been around five billion years. Uh and I realized that temperatures have changed and all of that, but our relationship between Earth and the sun has remained 92 93 million miles apart and that if we were 10 million miles closer to the sun As I understand it, and those of you who know more about this than I do. Please feel free to correct me. Um, if we're 10 million miles closer, son, we burn up. If we're 10 my 10 million miles further away. Uh, all life dies because we freeze And yet for some reason, we have stayed in that orbit around the sun, which gives us life, so that's one that I've always had a tough time. Um Understanding how it could stay so so constant Marcus in Boston, Marcus next on nights I go right ahead. Hey, how you doing, Dan? Hey, Marcus. Nice to hear your voice. What's on your mind tonight, Marcus? Well, I'm you know, I I believe I'm a psychic. So I'm going to tell you from a psychic support of you. So we're it. There is no other people out there. It's just with were the ones on I'm telling you because We have a structure which leads you know you Catholic, You know that. The difference between animals and humans is that we have a soul. And they always get to God. There's the spirit world and it's so complex and I can't see that existing on any other planet. I guess I just can't Fathom that. I think what? We're the only ones out. There s o. You're certain that Marcus, How did you come to that conclusion? I'm just saying, we're so complicated. Our systems are so complicated. We don't know what's in the ocean. We don't know what's down there, and there's life down there, but we don't know anything about it. And I just believe that my feeling is that we're somehow linked. Um Seriously. Okay. I don't never listen sense, but I mean, well connected to the spirit world. And, uh, well, you know, Well, let's hope so. That's one hope that I think most people who have religion of any type. I believe that there was there something beyond what we're doing here. Um, whether that's true, we can't prove that, uh, On the other hand, no one can disprove that. That's right. Which makes it. I guess I.
