"Dart, Evans Ramos vinolas, okay. A mixed doubles match routine Jessica bousso monero and David Vega Hernandez versus dart and Omar. And then he watched persist versus inglis, booza monero versus Hideki and singles, Ramos vinolas versus Jason kubler, and then who's the monero and David Vega Hernandez versus dosa appears. You get Rafa and some of those tickets, but it's just like, it was a weird thing. Like, notice back to those people, but it's just some obscure stuff mixed with some not ready for prime time kind of stuff. That's what I would say. Going back to the point about fans talking to you about the frustration with the event. It doesn't massive disservice to them because in a regulatory event, they can choose what they want to see. The tons of players around, you can go and watch x-ray, you can go much other player practice, whereas here, they both are the only matches on offer. You have to work and that's not everyone wants to be watching those matches. And if this is like if they're trying to make it into because it generally seems like they want to make into a big event in clearly a big lucrative event, but has some meaning, but it just doesn't work when, you know, some of those matches are just not what people would willingly watch. And the other thing that's about it too, which Rafa's complaint is that because of the way it was structured with these three team groups. There were so many dead rubbers, like those were not only obscure matches they were matches that didn't have stakes in the overall competition because in that group Britain clinched very quickly. Yeah. So that was a whole dead time. Which isn't great. Which you can have that, but shouldn't take two days. Sometimes it'll happen at around Robin. You have a game where both teams are out. But it shouldn't happen that much. But I didn't totally agree with this critique to get way to deep on this, where he said they should make it more dynamically who plays what day. One of the advantages of this format, which ATP cup did really well actually because they had 14 groups is having so fans can know what advance was playing one day because the Rafa days were selling out another day for it anyway. So that's enough on that ATP couple of transition back to you guys should be on tech in the women's straw. Found tech opened after her ATP cup that's what I wanted to say. She plays, she gets kind of shellacked by pagola. She wasn't great in her other matches. At ATP cup sorry, united cup, I was called ATP cup. At United cup, losing or not losing, but not being very impressive in her match against the top Italian player whose name is Martina Trevor. Trevisan, and then sorry I was just drawing a blank there. And just yeah, just not being totally at her most imperious, let's say. So where do you think ego sits? And I guess what are you hearing about so that the conditions in Melbourne because that was one of the things in Sydney where she got her doors blown off by pakula because it was playing so fast and slick and low. It was like perfect Google conditions and not really right for iga at all. How's it playing in Melbourne for what you know? That was actually another issue with, you know, to cut that, but while the U.S. team were in Sydney the whole time, Poland qualified for the knockout, the run around, they had to fly to Sydney and completely adjust them, third course were, as you said, extremely fast and quick and she couldn't. I think the modern courts are not. I think they're playing fairly quickly, but not as has been the case in recent years. We're not as good as Sydney. Those were like those quotes were really for us. And yeah, and with regards to I think she clearly starts the tournament as a heavy heavy heavy favorite given all that she achieved last year. It will be like a very interesting challenge and just following, as we know in tennis, it's one thing to achieve certain things, but following up whether it's a breakthrough, whether it's even just like a slam semi rhino or where you have one of the most dominant seasons over the past decade and more. Now she has to follow that up. So it's a whole different pressure and regardless of that heavy loss and obviously I think it was striking for people to see her sitting on the chair and crying, but as a kind of noted to a few people last year we didn't see her losing much and certainly not important matches, major matches, the second half of the season. So she cries a lot. So it wasn't quite a lot. And the other thing is also, as you'll see, and when you watch breakpoint, if you haven't yet, folks, like tennis players cry a lot too. Definitely made that unusual is that she did it out in court in front of the crowd. After the match it ended, usually players who are going to cry, walk off court briskly, and then go cry in a hallway or in the locker room. That's the normal. That is what made it different. And so seeing her there for an extended time. And she was on court for a long time. After that loss, actually. Sitting out there. That was a bit different, but yeah, I think going into this after what happened last year, I think you kind of have to have a bit of a spontaneous versus the field lens for any tournament, at least as we're getting off the bat here. And I do think this is a tough draw for her, actually. She starts off with you lady Meyer, who is the German player who made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon last year. You didn't get any ranking points for it, but then also had a pretty decent run at the U.S. open. So she played Shia and tech at U.S. open?

"And that seems like it's still like an impasse for sure. Yeah. So I wouldn't take that too to seriously. But yeah, but so does have the contract. Hosting it for ten years. And I've done one year so far. That's interesting. If and when and how Tencent back to China, because it's over there. It's actually just coming back to Japan for the first time. An actual model, the big tournament. Next week. So in Auckland, coming back online next year, which hasn't been gone, it's been gone for a while. It's coming back in 2023. And also, there's this new united cup, which we're going to hear more details of that soon, but the ATP cup, which no one asked for seems to be no more, and they're going to bring in this united cut pretty quickly. So interesting to see what that looks like and I don't know. I kind of still think that tennis was kind of fine in 2019 that I thought it was a great week of the year. I love that Brisbane tournament. It's like a really strong 500 for the women and it was a good two 50 for the men and I don't know. It seems like a lot of reinventing the wheel at first week of the year. But I'm excited for possibly this mixed team competition we've always wanted to actually be a big thing and to have see things like a dosa Alcatraz team and it's past sakari team and a her catch sviat team. That could be cool. If it goes, if it goes really well, there's a big upside for this event. I really think. All right. And I think you mentioned what cloak forward to. We'll see whether or not Federer appears. Oh yeah, Federer's supposed to come back. That guy. I'm supposed to come back in a week. I would imagine, I would imagine he would be doubles all night labor cup. I would have to think if he does play. If anything, yeah. If he plays, yeah. And then he would have basil on his schedule too. And I think he said something, or there's some interview where he made some reference to Wimbledon 2023. I think, so I don't have retirement on full alert for Federer saying a sudden farewell because balls will be a place to do it for him potentially. And if Federer follows three now, this would be definitely the biggest start of the biggest retirement year, and a very long time. But I think surely after seeing Serena and how she went out and managed to engineer a great send off, he would want that. He would strive for that. It's funny because now that's the conclusion, but someone I was talking to someone in Cincinnati said the opposite. After she lost everybody sees this and it's like, I don't want to do that. I don't want to, I don't want that. And so yeah, it's tough. Again, deserves credit for turning it around because it was rough at the start of her comeback this year. Tennis fan usually. Yeah, this house is not easy. This has been easy. It's been a pleasure to honey. Thank you very much. Thanks for listening. There's a long episode and we'll see you

"She's managed to, I think, go to France, she's playing in Leon this week, but other Ukrainians sog stokowski has revealed that he's going back to join the army and fight. I think he had retired hasn't he from the tour, but was obviously living outside of Ukraine, perhaps. So it's a really difficult time for so many people and including players on tour who be personally directly affected, we've got a lot of elasticity and there's obviously a big, big player that springs to mind. He will obviously be impacted and obviously a lot of players have spoken up, especially Russian players to condone what has been happening. I think Medvedev and Rublev have both spoken out. But it does bring up the question of Russian players Russian team in tennis events. What should happen to Russian players and a team events that have Russia the fed cup or Billie Jean King cup Davis Cup at the end of the year should Russia be allowed to take part? Yeah, because we've seen at the moment because of the doping situation in the Olympics, I think we've seen Russia compete in previous team competitions under the ROC name. Which felt a bit, you know, for many people, I think it was just felt a bit weird. It just, again, it just feels like Russia, but under a slightly different name, but does this does this situation force the ITF's hand in terms of going one step further and actually saying, well, given what is going on, given we've seen Russia invade Ukraine, do we ban, do they ban Russia from competing in the Davis Cup or the Billie Jean King cup events? And that is, I think that that is sort of where we're at in terms of how this I think is impacting, I think, tennis in the way of international representation. I mean, where do you stand on this game? Because for me, this is obviously going to be a big talking point. I don't feel like at the moment that ROC it just doesn't, it feels a bit of a cop out and again, there needs to be some sort of addressing. And I think it needs to be the same on both sides. And I think what's interesting is that I think in the past, we've seen the WTA, they've taken more proactive and firmer stances on situations. In terms of calling out the fact that they're not going to have any events in China, the difference in decision making. Is that going to lead to a difference in what happens to Russia Davis Cup versus Russia, Billie Jean King cup. I don't know, but it certainly at the moment is, I think it's a question that needs to be looked at and particularly I think yesterday I saw Ukraine tennis federation. I think submit an open letter, I think, to, I think it was the ITF in terms of calling on the expulsion of Russia. And I think also that the Belarusian tennis federation, given their involvement as well. So it remains to be seen, but I think given what's happening in other sports, I don't think it would be a surprise if, yeah, we saw Russia be expelled at least for the time being from Davis Cup and Billie Jean King cup and ATP cup and any other international tennis team events that exist on the calendar. Yeah, I don't think it would be surprising. And I think that would be the most appropriate way of doing something about it. Obviously, for the individual players, you can't stop them competing, that's not fair. Andre Rublev has got nothing to do with what the Russian government have done on the invasion. So you can't punish individuals such as that, but and obviously you would still be punishing them by saying, oh, you can't compete in the Davis Cup and yeah, that is quite unfair or for example, Andre rible if his greatest desire is to win the Davis Cup, but how do they compete in that even as yet ROC? It's essentially they are, we all know that it's still Russia. So if other sports are going to do similar things, it would be a bad look for tennis not to follow follow, follow the same suit. So we will await a decision. I'm sure, as events unfold, there will be one. And it's obviously, I don't envy the decision makers, but I think that they will have to come out with some sort of decision. And I think I hope that those affected would understand, but it just, yeah, I agree. You are AC rock, however you say it. It's like it is a cop out. I think isn't it. I felt that at the last Olympics, and maybe those players athletes should have been allowed to compete, but just without any mention to Russia in the title of the team or, you know, yeah, it's a difficult one. It's all awful awful events awful news and let's just difficult whichever way you look at it. Yeah, and I think what's been so I think great to see in tennis is the support that I think has been shown to Ukraine and. I think also the frustration that some of the Russians I think have in terms of how this kind of, as I said, this sort of situation is developing and I think everyone here obviously the party shop from me and Kim, we've obviously want to kind of support and make sure all these people are safe. And their lives are not in danger. And I think for me, in the tennis world, it was unbelievable to see someone like Diana Yushchenko, having to flee into France. It just kind of, I think, really kind of those kind of stories, I think, just show that how far this is reached so quickly and to see kind of the messages and the responses that the players have had, whether they've been writing it in TV cameras, whether they've been saying it in press conferences. I think it's shown that the tennis community really coming together and as I said sort of showing their support for Ukraine, which I think has been really, really heartwarming. Definitely. It puts it all into perspective, just into it as well. Like Rublev mentioned, I know I keep mentioning his name, but in terms of a tennis match is just to turn in his match, but the main thing is the welfare and safety of everyone. So I mean, we do have tennis coming up this week still. We've got two WTA events, which will just quickly cover before we bring today to a close. Is out in Mexico in the Monterey event..

"Team elements to it, but we have got team sports wrestling at the moment, some better than others with the participation of Russia in their sports. We've had FIFA release what many most people considered to be a pretty toothless statement saying that Russia will be allowed to continue competing in FIFA event, meaning the World Cup and World Cup qualifiers. They just won't be able to do so under the name of Russia and under the Russian flag or Russian anthem. Now, tennis is in a slightly different situation. It is individuals. And also, we've got Davis Cup qualifiers taking place this week, but Russia aren't participating in them. They're the reigning Davis Cup champions. Does that exempt tennis from having to wrestle with these issues? Or does tennis need to think? And when I say tennis, obviously, I'm talking about some mythical unified governing body. That covers the whole of the sport which absolutely does not exist. But you know, when the school boards come up in your mouth or whatever tournament, it might be, do we want to be seeing a Russian flag? On that score board, or is it not fair to apply that to individuals or in terms of team competition, do the ITF ATP with the ATP cup? Do they need to be taking pre emptive action to say Russia will not be allowed to compete? What's your feeling about that? Yeah, it's a really difficult one. But when I look at those other sports and feel very strongly about the lack of action from fever and I so admire the way other countries have said, well, I am not going to represent my country if we're playing against Russia. I have such respect for that. And yet I have to then look at the sport I work in, and think that yeah, on a national level, for Davis Cup and for Billie Jean King cup, I think the as awful as it is for those individual players that I've just referenced who would be underneath that flag, then it probably is exactly the right thing to do for team sports in tennis as well. And it even occurred to me, you know, how far should this go? Should individuals be barred from playing professional sport if they're from that country, and again I feel I have a not in my stomach as I just say that. That isn't fair on Daniel Medvedev. That is a fair on Andre Rublev. But is there an argument for it? I don't know. Honestly, I don't know, but there must be a conversation. Yeah. I don't know either. I mean, I'm trying to draw comparisons between sports and it feels like what tennis needs to do is what the ITF has done in terms of first and foremost canceling those events in Russia. Then you extend that to team competitions and look, I do think that it's different when they're competing for Russia and I think Russia at the moment shouldn't be in the Billie Jean King cup the ATP cup. I actually think, yes, they should. They should preempt that and they should be banned from those competitions at the moment. And that would be in line with what we've seen with other countries saying I'm not going to play Russia in football, for example. I'm trying to think of the comparison in tennis in terms of players competing on the tour. That would be like, I suppose, saying, well, Russian players can't play in the Premier League, or can't play in La Liga or whatever division it is. And I don't think there's been a suggestion of that in football, for example. And I think I agree with David that that would just seem really harsh to do that to Medvedev and all the ration players currently on tour, but that's not to say that we might not get there eventually. Look, I don't know. I don't think I have the answer for this, but it's certainly a question that tennis, as you said, if there was a single body needs to be, it needs to be asking itself. And seem to be thinking about and doing something about, I think. Yeah, sort of hiding behind the fact that it's an individual sport seems cowardly, given that there is an opportunity to get out ahead of this and as you've said, preemptively announce something. It's so, so difficult on the individuals thing on one hand, I think Russia is not a democracy. It's very, very far from a democracy. So equating equating the government with the people is unfair. You know, the Russian people didn't vote for this in a democratic way. And also any support that Russian individuals might have for it for me is mitigated by the fact that there is not a free media in Russia, but equally change of regime in Russia can only be affected by the people if not in a sort of democratic way that we know in some sort of uprising by the people, therefore treating them as responsible and that could help foster anti Putin anti regime sentiment and ultimately achieve a goal is unfair as it might feel in the moment. I don't know, I don't know. Goodness me, this is not territory that we really are qualified to be on. But and yet we are forced to think about all of these things. Look, I don't know, I don't know how many listeners we have in Ukraine. David can probably tell me off the top of his head. Because he spends all day and a lot of the knights as well studying the podcast stats, but I think we have a few and I don't know, you're probably not able to listen at the moment, but on the off chance that anyone in Ukraine or any Ukrainians or anybody that's recently fled Ukraine is listening right now, we support you and we are thinking of you. Do you have the number to hand David? I don't, but I'll get back to you. Well, David, Davis let you down in your moment here..

"And used his own physicality and rankly just outlasted chillage. So the only real disappointment from Australia seemed this year so far was against Medvedev in the second set of that ATP cup. Bear in mind he was with him for 8 games and he beat zverev. Stood toe to toe with the ATP cup and beat him. And he's got himself through to this stage. So he's improving. And sin is improving even more. So, you know, I think that I think that I feel less confident that Medvedev will get there now, and also the pressure's all on him now. Everybody expects him to win this thing. Interesting. See, I still feel very confident in Medvedev, despite what happened today, which was a faucet win over maxim Chrissy. And by his own admission, Medvedev, he was in trouble today. He said that had he not won that full set, I think he eventually broke cressy serve on his 9th break point opportunity in that he said it in not taking that set given all the squandered opportunities he would have been in tough mental shape. You know, they both knew that that he potentially had him in a 5th set. He was mentally on the ropes and Chrissy was disrupting Medvedev in all the ways. But I do think that was quite a lot down to maxime cressy. Quite frankly, I really do think it was that that much up today the conditions today Medvedev doesn't love the heat and it was hugely unpleasant at the time that they were playing. Maximum Chrissy seems to be not bothered not to even notice any kind of weather conditions whatsoever. Medvedev was bothered by his quarter assignment. He's made no secret to that that's too much is in a row. He's been scheduled on the second court. And he spoke about that following a question from Ben Rothenberg in the press conference afterwards. He said, he said he had not usually keen to make court requests. He was like, I don't want to be that guy that insists on playing on a certain court a certain time. He said, once this tournament, he had asked to play on the rod laver arena. And he was like, I guess maybe I have to ask every time, because it doesn't go without saying, he didn't like the lack of space behind the baseline on the second court. He said it, you know, genuinely plays differently, and he was standing so far back to receive serve. We were we were laughing Matt and I watching on the tele just speculating about whether he was standing that far back in order to be in the shadow because of how hot it was. And he was barely on the screen. At times, but I think he was trying to dip the return just over the net to get it at maximum crusty's feet. So I think there are a few factors in it today. And I'm not sure any of them will apply in his future matches because that seems crusty won't be there. He's going to be on the rod laver arena. I feel like, you know, he might have had his sort of mental wander today and it'll only harden him and you know Medvedev said Medvedev said it was down to maxime cressy. He was full of good things to say about cresty David. He I asked him, do Chrissy's a confident and ambitious guy. He thinks his game can get him top Turner or even number one. I said, is that realistic? And I expected him to bulk a little bit at number one. Medvedev's the next number one in waiting surely. And he will hope and expect to be there for a long time. I'm sure. But I've said, yep, I think that is realistic, you know, nothing's given, but he thought his game was very impressive and he was impressed with his staying power and resilience and mental attitude that he saw a lot that he liked today that I've been listening to you, David. You're also saw a lot that he didn't like because it's sent him a bit dually, and he admitted to having to resort basically to gamesmanship and talking out loud and kind of just dissing the game of cressy and sang up boring it was when he lost the third set. Medvedev and he said I was I was getting stressed and I decided I thought maybe if I say these things out loud, he will start to get in his head. But what an extraordinary admission. But that's what he said. And I thought I thought Chrissy impressed me when he hit those two blind in return winners. I didn't really see those coming in that third set tiebreak. I thought it was going to be straight sets and actually he wasn't far away from turning it around. But yeah, I don't necessarily buy number one in the world for vaccine Crescent. I think you can be a top ten player with that game, but that's as much as I'd be prepared to say at this point. Should I tell you what Tim henman thinks about maxim Chrissy, who is Tim Hammond is the harshest critic of volleying that I know. He's said on Amazon Prime before that he doesn't rate Roger Federer's volleys too highly certainly. Yeah, I think relative to other players, you rate them highly. But relative to his era of volleying, not so highly. Anyway, Tim hemen said, really enjoyed the match to exclamation marks and Tim's not, you know, he's not a big punctuation guy. He said, think he think he didn't serve the right spots at all against Medvedev, but fought very well, will enjoy watching more of him in the future, volleys, 7 out of ten. That's pretty good. Indeed. So coming to a top ten near you sometimes seen. So Medvedev against Felix augere seam. And stefanos sits a pass against Yannick sinner. It's a very it's a very next journey flavor, isn't it? In that half of the draw. It is actually, isn't it? They're just the gen now so what about the women's matches today? Goodness me, we've had some upsets. We really have had some upsets today. Should we start with a lise corneille who beat Simona Halep today 6 four three 6 6 four Elise a corny has reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in her 63rd Grand Slam appearance. That is just an extraordinary record and absolutely a record that Elise corne is and was aware of this means everything to Elise a coordinate everything. You've never seen joy like it in the press conference afterward. She can't believe it, really. And the match was incredible, played in the heat of the day, the heat rules enforced between. It was a great advert for the heat rule actually because I'm not sure anyone would have been able to find the court in that third set had they not been able to go off for presumably in ice bath. And Elise summed it up perfectly herself, I think, in the post match interview on court, she said, after half an hour, we were both dying on the court, but we carried on for two and a half hours with all our hearts and my goodness me did lise corneille leave her heart out there, Matt. Oh, I think this was one of my moments of the tournament, actually, so far this match. It was grueling because neither player has what you would call a point ending shot, really. They have to work the points. They have to move each other about the core. And in mid 30° heat, that was incredibly demanding on them in all the ways physically mentally emotionally and corny and I looked like she had it a set and a break up and hallett was hunching over I think a lot of people thought she had a leg injury because she kept clutching her leg, but she did. She did confirm impressed that she was just exhausted..

"To make that quarterfinal because he's having a really good tournament. Yeah, I agree with what he said about coming through a 5 set match, having won the first two sets. It was a tie break in the 5th set. I think if you're going to do that and come back in the 5th set, it's going to be close, isn't it? So yeah, to do that on a either expect it to go the way of the player who has won the third and fourth sets quite comfortably, or it's going to be really close and proud to be on a tie break. So I was obviously got a second wind during that match. And really gone for it. And it's paid off. So yeah, I don't know is that going to affect too many fourth round match and wear them out, I don't know. Yeah, it's interesting because I don't feel like we really talk about at the moment as a potential Grand Slam contender, but you know if you look at his record in Grand Slam since 2021, it's quite fascinating because he is 19 and O against anyone not named Novak Djokovic, but against Novak Djokovic. He is one zero lost three. So, you know, there's not really and Novak Djokovic obviously does not end the Australian open draw. So given that should we should we be talking about him as a grandson potentially? Because he's, again, a very tough nut to crack. And with his massive survey, a massive forehand, when they're firing on their day, a lot of players just come unstuck and they're not really sure what to do about it. I mean, how do you think do you think baritone can beat Rafa Nadal? If they get to because I haven't seen it, I get a feeling that's going to be the semifinal at the moment. Yeah, it's tricky. I still probably would still back Nadal. I don't know, I think with Barry, there are maybe I know that he has, there are always think fitness questions for him at grand slams, but yeah we'll see, but I think certainly he's always, I think, brought his a game and is living up to his living up to expectations. And he's going under the radar a little bit. Whereas someone like a Carlos alcaraz, I feel like given what happened at the U.S. open last season, all eyes are on him at the moment. And yeah, I mean, I think this team will look back on this defeat and I think it will look at it in a constructive way in terms of I think giving him that belief that actually I can play I can play with the big boys. I can play with top ten in the world and yeah. I think it would be quite pleased with, you know, how far he's gone. I mean, it's not, I don't think it's anything to be really disappointed about losing a 5th set tiebreak from a two set from two sets down to then come back and win the next two to then lose it on the 5th set tiebreak. I don't think he'll be too disappointed in that because that will show that it's only come down to what a matter of probably 5 or 6 points at the end of the match. After what's going to have been a very long match yeah, I don't think Carlos alcaraz has anything to be disappointed about in that loss, especially to a top ten player. Moving on to another Spaniard, we have rough and Nadal. He beat Karen catch enough in four sets, 6 three, 6 two, three, 6, 6 one. I mean, no, it's not really. Is there a alarm bells there because he dropped a set? I don't think so. I just thought, yeah, he just kind of bounced back and I think it was almost kind of his loss. His last hand I think in that third set and he didn't really have much else to give in that fourth and Nadal sort of ran away with it. So yeah, Nadal, I think, is marching on he also has come through today against mannarino in straight sets, mannarino surprisingly beat Aslan karatsev in a match that ended a past half to in the morning. This has to be late for me. This has to be one of the longest four set matches, I think I've, well, I think I've seen anyway. Four hours, 38 minutes for a 7 6 6 7 7 5 6 four win. I mean, that's a very gutsy performance from mannarino because I would have thought that was a matchup that would favor karat said that. He probably minutes on the court perhaps catching up with him that really long first round match where it went 5 hours. So yeah, very, very, very good for mannarino. He kept his unforced error count really, really low. Despite the amount of time on court, I think he only hit 14 unforced errors. So that I think was the foundation his success was keeping that error count low. I mean, I was quite impressed with mannarino's performance here in this match because this was when I had gone to bed during the day session. So I missed part in Osaka. And when I got up this mattress still going and watching them sort of in the third and fourth set, they were clearly both exhausted. Because there'd been on the court for a good four hours at that point. But I think I could see it more in Caracas face than I could in mannarino's face. I don't know whether that was just how it showed and you never quite know how exhausted someone is, but I think perhaps manner, you know, picked up on that a bit from karate so as well that he just knew that if he stayed in there, it's only going to get worse for karate. So why not go for it? And he paid off, didn't it? Came through the four sets. And also, in focusing on the third round today, but his fourth round match against Nadal, yes, it was straight sets, but that first set was a 1614 time frame. So he's clearly, I think brought what he had in the third round into the fourth round. And just look if I can go long here, then perhaps perhaps it will pay off. And he was very, very close to taking that first set and maybe it would have been a little bit more, yeah, a little bit more interesting. If he had done so, but alas, it was not the case. We also just wrapping up round three. We had Dennis Shapovalov, win against Riley opelka. He actually is also just caused perhaps one of the shocks on the men's side. He beat zverev as the third seed in the forefront. So yeah, he's obviously playing very, very well. I mean, Canada won the ATP cup, didn't they? And both those both those players alissa and Shapovalov are just carrying on that four month. They're just, you know, they're just they're just bringing their a game at the moment and perhaps they are, perhaps they think they are in competition with each other and that's driving there. That's driving their success because both players playing very, very good. For the shap of all of to defeat zverev, who, again, has.

"And I think he beats nearly everybody pretty routinely these days. I don't think I'm better as a seed like the trouble him too much. I don't think curios is likely traveling too much. I don't think Isner is the time when too much is in charge with cressey. Oh, he's got Chrissy in the first round. That's hilarious. Yeah. That's an interesting first round. For sure, Crecy plan really want me to Melbourne final serving volleyer. Is there a lot of Americans in the first translator some weird side plays Americans very, very frequently at slants. You probably knock it. He lost a nakashima U.S. open. A lot of Americans start to apocalyptic, at least once in a slant first round. And then schwarzman's in here. But yeah, I like Medvedev. I think that is, especially with the Djokovic uncertainty, I think he becomes a pretty clear favorite. I would pick him right now in this term with that Djokovic because I just don't know again. I keep talking to this guy. I don't know how much he's actually a competitive throw that's been given everything. And so Medvedev it wasn't as best took a loss actually to go on bear, right? The first week of the year, he has done better. Who do you lose to not like? You're asking the wrong lady I know. Okay, let's think about this. Who did he lose to? I think you know how to Google. I will talk about Medvedev while I look at that, please. He lost at the ATP cup to Uber. Yeah. Okay. That's what I meant to say. It didn't come out that way. I know who going there is. His mom looks like Elizabeth Perkins. That's why I know him. But any plays piano am I correct? You're very correct. Look at me. ATP insider. Yes, he lost in the group stage to umber 6, 7, 7 5, 7, 6. Yeah, breaker in the third. But he did beat demeanor. He did beat bertini and he did Felix. Yeah. So. And you explain a lot of doubles and getting really fired up in doubles in ATP cup actually. It's been really fun to kind of, 'cause I talked to Cassatt and I talked to probably Cenk about a bunch of different things, but I did ask them quite a bit about a Russia, you guys kind of dominated every single team related thing last year. And it's been fun to kind of, I love this little crew of Russians, man. They're fun. And they're all super happy and super excited for each other. And dasha was just like, I never thought that I wanted to win Billie Jean King cup ever until it happened. And I was like, this is amazing. And just, yeah, the whole vibe around team Russia seems dope. Definitely. And I also love, we'll get to him when he comes to when he comes to him. But like, I love that tennis Twitter has embraced us on carrazzo as much as I have. Oh my God, he's the best. I have loved him from the start. A lot of people have, but I just feel like he's somebody who like, I don't know, like, pre tennis Twitter with like kind of just ignored like, oh, here's some guy who doesn't know and like win things. But he's like beloved for these things in this way. And he like mythologized for his calves. It will get to him, but he's one sitting tonight being Andy Murray the final Andy Murray as per emotional moment in the trophy speech. So let's move to the other part of this quarter. Talk about someone who wants Djokovic to get out of here. Andre Rublev keeps getting drawn into these Medvedev quarters. This is a real difference for him. I mean, it's someone who's really dominated Rublev beat him. I think that one time in Cincinnati would never have ran to the camera. This is the only one over him, but it's been a very dominant and very frequent head to head they have here several of very much like the relocation to the top quarter. If it's offered to him, and yeah, and he gets a search against mauger, then could play a carpathia, baran kiss, could draw, I think, for him here. The other part of this draw is more loaded. Felix is in here, feel like just was with Canada on the way to winning the ATP cup. Again, an event. Does that count as a Felix title? There was debate about this. I'm going to say no because we didn't count like Federer winning Hopman Cup as his first career title, which it would have been. We don't talk about it that way. I mean, Hopman Cup's not a sanctioned event. I know, but it sounds like a team event. He didn't win his match in the final. Against Russia. Or whenever they played Russia, he didn't win his match. Anyway, if he'd want all his matches, I'd be more enthusiastic about Felix. But he did not. So I'm not. But he's playing he's a top ten. He's building, getting more consistent, taking care of business more. If Rublev stays in this section, I like rub love. If people have dozen stay in this section, malfi gets poured into this line of the draw. And I actually really like my feet. That was one of the really cool stories in the early week of the year and my fees at 35, winning a title after the really long swoon he was in and swamp he was in. When the pandemic was when we were coming back in the pandemic, stoppage. And it's really cool to see him happy and winning and just like Monfils coconuts and ally was good vibes..

"In Adelaide. And Rafael Nadal makes it title 89 in Melbourne. Kim today is the 10th of January and we are here to catch up on the week in tennis at passing shot headquarters. But before we do that, how are you doing? How has the off season been for you? I know it's been incredibly short for all tennis fans out there including well, including ourselves was your do you have a good Christmas break? Christmas feels like quite a long time ago now, Joel, not going to lie because this new season has started with quite a bang. You know, tennis has become prime time news, which I have to say I didn't think that would actually really happen. And so Christmas seems quite a long time ago, but I'm really, I'm very much looking forward to AO and now we've got all the warm up events underway and obviously lots to discuss today. But I trust you had a nice nice week off as well. Two weeks off three weeks however long it's been now. Yes, I did. I got some tennis themed Christmas presents as well. I got a Wimbledon mouse mat, which I'm now using at work, which is great. But yeah, it's been quite chilled. It's been a bit hectic as well. Lots of Friends getting in touch with me who I wouldn't have put them down as tennis fans, but yeah, since the drama of Novak Djokovic and well, Djokovic versus Australia, it feels like, yeah, tennis has been global news. It has been on the back pages. It has been on the front pages. And again, it just adds up to that. That thing that we all know as tennis fans is that tennis never sleeps, does it Kim it? Regardless of the off season is always something to talk about and 2022 is just started with a big, big dose of controversy it seems. It has and we will be getting on to that in just a second. But before we, before we properly start Joel, we just wanted to say to everyone listening, we hope you also had a nice break over the festive season and we are happy. Happy that we're back. And thank you to everyone who has so far supported our crowdfund as well. Just want to say a big, big thank you. We've been overwhelmed with the amount of support that we've had and the donations coming in through that. So thank you massively to everyone who's contributed. There is still time if you haven't, we will remind everyone later as well. But just wanted to say thank you before we start. But yeah, like you just said, Joel has been a bit of a mess, but also very interesting. As a tennis fan, as a general sports fan as well, I don't really know where to start, but because I'm sure pretty much everyone listening will have been following what's going on. So we probably don't need to explain all the background so much. But the early hours of this morning, you know, when we all woke up, we found out that Novak has been released from where he was being held at the park hotel in Melbourne. He's now free to go about his business. He's been seen practicing on rod laver arena. You know, he's very much there in it to play the tournament and win it. Still subject to a possibility of the immigration minister, I think, you know, overriding the judge's decision in the hearing. There is still possibility that he could exercise his powers. In which case, I think if that happened, I think that would be a final decision. He has the power to ignore the judge and just kind of take an overriding decision. I don't know if Djokovic appear again. Kim, if that happened, he would get the Serbian mob on the streets of Melbourne would be would be after it would be because that would be we're waiting to see on that decision. But yeah, it's very interesting if he decides to exercise that right. I feel that Australia unlikely to go for that because we've seen in the streets of Melbourne, quite a bit of Ferrari, Novak's fans have been sort of pepper sprayed by police. They were chasing a car down the street because they thought that was the car that contained Novak. I think actually it was perhaps a member of his team. It wasn't actually Novak, but the police obviously felt that the fans were, I don't know. They didn't want them around, so they were pepper spray them. I don't really know because I wasn't, you know, we're not there. We're not on the ground. So it's hard to comment when you're just kind of presented with some footage and a reporter. But it's publicly speaking. It's obviously caused a massive scandal and you know we've seen obviously all the fans camped out outside where Novak was being held Serbian flags, chanting is his name lighting candles all these scenes that we've never expected that we would be seeing and obviously in Serbia in Belgrade. They were obviously having a sort of mass gathering, his family were, you know, have been holding lots of public speaking events they held a press conference today. The thing that I never thought I would actually see Joe and this kind of took it to the next level yesterday was when Nigel Farage rocked up in Serbia. I guess he'd been invited by by the Djokovic traveler or he'd somehow managed to wangle his way in support of Novak and I think we all saw that Andy Murray tweet basically putting Nigel Farage down and calling out the massive irony in the fact that forages suddenly speaking out trying to keep someone in a country whereas normally he's trying to keep people out. Absolutely bizarre. I mean, the whole Novak Djokovic family, you know, voicing speaking up and obviously in support or Djokovic has been has taken it I feel like to the next level. It feels like his dad's calling on absolutely anyone and everyone to get behind Novak and support him. But yeah, it's been it's just been one massive circus and it's been a circus, I think that everyone is forming an opinion of seeing it being played out, whether that's in Australia, whether that's in Serbia. It's just a crazy hectic situation and it's already a hectic start to the season. We've had what 6 tournaments there's been lots of different tennis going on. ATP cup team tennis. But this is kind of trumped it all. And there are lots of talking points from different angles. You can look at this story and obviously Novak Djokovic is someone who is unvaccinated..

"It just like tennis Australia was like not understanding what it had. With this and getting learned by this ATP cup money, I think it's frustrating. But you know, again, it's okay to try things along if you learn from your mistakes and undo them. That's because that final habit in the company I was at in 2019 was so good. It was the one where Serena played Federer. It had a really great final with Serena with Ben shift and Federer winning a deciding point doubles match against Vera and bench. It was just like really nice nice tournament with good crowd and everything. You just had Serena fetters like really unique experience and which was like big news around the world of those two finally played each other. And now you're just gonna get rid of it and throw me the other metro valley. Again, number 5 the other metro valley, but it's just like it's a weird misfire. And I do, I'm sure those guys at the metro bellies and the cospin off who is the number two player from Moldova the year that albach qualified a team and other kind of obscure guys really do relish the opportunity to be playing TV matches on big courts. But it's not a good showcase when it's a completely empty Ken rosewall arena. I will add though very quickly, don't be judging this event by the attendance because there's a pandemic spiking in Australia right now and stadiums not being full is completely reasonable. I'd say on that point, the positive is that there are smaller countries that wouldn't normally have a chance to face the big countries on big stages. Like an outright album or even like Stephan osis of us because Norway beat the U.S. in ATP cup. Like Norway beating the U.S. a tennis competition, like four years ago, been an unconceivable ATP cup, but I just, yeah, I agree that I don't think it's just the incredibly appealing event. But again, particularly as a similar event, that also has as many issues happens four or 5 weeks earlier. As issues, but at least it also has heritage. It still does feel, I think that Davis Cup is like, it does still feel like David Kevin does still feel like there is sort of the national client free country pride in the way that I don't personally sense watching HT cup on TV. I mean, yes, there are countries by teams like country, but the national federations aren't involved in a random coach page. It's less of a. Great Britain. We love it. It's not quite, let's take this incredibly serious Liam Brody who was holding back laughter as Jimmy Murray was asked about. Anyway, we now turn I guess to here. We've been here in.

"Here and I think almost everywhere, at least in my place I've been during the pandemic, your vaccination status is very much not a private thing. You are a granted access to places because they check your vaccination status and you're able to go. And obviously, Australia as a walled off country is that way. And so I just, I'm saying this to get at, I don't buy that someone's vaccination status is private medical info that somehow sensitive, I think it's very much a public yes or no that's an interest of public health. This is a communicable disease we're talking about this contagious. It's causing a pandemic, and I think there's some duty towards transparency that every citizen has about their vaccination status. I would like to see inform how jug talks about it in the future. I don't think you can say, oh, it's private. I don't want to get into this, especially when it's become this much of a flashpoint when you've already raised that youth have gotten an exemption. I think it does. I'm not sure I'll get satisfied with his response to that, but that's sort of just how I think I don't see it as something that's particularly. Private or sensitive or something. And this goes to larger topics and sports are not larger, but different types of storage, by the TUs, which therapeutic use exemptions or people get permission to use substances that would be otherwise banned by wada is should those all be secret or not and that's a fair debate and it probably does depend on the context of what your condition is. If you're saying you have asthma, that's a lot of sensitive and saying you have chlamydia. You know, like whatever the case may be, yeah, I just think it's again, I wish the 5s were better in the first show of the year, you guys. I apologize for the vibes. It's not a fun vibe. I don't think we should move on. Let's move on. Let's move on to something else. I don't have to be positive feelings about, but we'll get through it together. The ATP cup is the flagship event of the first week of the calendar as it's been rejiggered since 2020. It debuted during pre COVID and was invented to place over three cities in Sydney in Brisbane and in Perth, then the finals in Sydney, and now it's just in the last year it was just in Melbourne. And now it's just in Sydney. And it was sort of it was really got a big role and there's a lot of ATP organizational corporate enthusiasm for this event. It's going to be their big team event this week. I really kind of flagship thing. They totally remodeled the beginning of the tour calendar, which had some pretty robust events in terms of Brisbane in terms of Doha, which was the big two 50 in the first week of the year. Hopman Cup was also in that slot with a beloved event for a lot of fans. We'll get to that. And HT cup came. I think it was okay in the first year I think it was kind of fine. I remember having an overall feeling being at ATP cup in 2020. I think this is fine, but I don't know who asked for this. I don't feel like it was filling a void that necessarily existed. And then I.

"And didn't you make a bold prediction of the but you thought the opposite would happen? Is that right? You thought it might have taken too much out of him. Yeah, thanks, Katherine. Sorry. Your conversation worked out, David. But that was when we that was the first incarnation of the ATP cup, wasn't it? We didn't know we were learning as we went about what it is and what it has on everything, where it sits in tennis. I genuinely wasn't trying to throw you under the bus there, David. It's quite right. Brilliantly. I think the home of rubbish predictions. I don't think you would ever any of us would ever say something like that now that. Any result at the ATP cup would lead us to draw dramatic conclusions about the Australian open in a couple of weeks time. Unless it's sort of injury unless it's a sit to pass thing where we're learning that maybe is elbow isn't quite right yet. You know, for example, Medvedev losing to umber. I don't read much into that. No. I think that could be a product of Medvedev, not having that much of an off season, and that might have a knock on effect at the Australian open if he's fatigued in any way or not fully prepared. I'm not predicting that. I think Medvedev will have a strong Australian open, but it might be something that we come back to later, I suppose. I think another couple of players that spring to mind from the past, I remember berating, he looked brilliant in the ATP cup last year and looked brilliant at the start of the Australian open as well before he got that injury. But that sort of set him up for a really good year, I think. And then the other one is Alex domino has played really well in the ATP cup in the past and then had his Australian open curtailed. I think one year he ran into Rafael Nadal quite early one year he actually got injured at the ATP cup and then and then couldn't play the Australian open and last year. From memory, he was playing really, really well, and then he had to play a match at the Austrian open against Fognini behind closed doors, and it just it took away all of them's energy and it actually really focused for nini and funnily played brilliantly. So there have been little examples in the past where we've perhaps been able to read into ATP cup form or think ATP cup form might tell us something about the Australian open, but I don't know. It's not conclusive, I don't think. Actually, did a bit of a cam nori in his post match interview yesterday after beating bertini, and he was very good. I found that a really interesting match. It was another example of what you can gain sometimes from having Jim Courier on commentary. He pointed a couple of things out, and they've had sometimes had him sit in courtside as well. And he just noticed his one or two things that I've not picked up on before about how dimmer just sort of stands stock still to return serve and doesn't move an inch. Doesn't move back and forth just stands there and challenges an opponent. It doesn't matter how hard it hit the serve, he's standing on the baseline. And afterwards, Domino's said, I'm in the best shape of my life and I'm ready to have a big year. And I thought that was boldly said that was boldly said in the way that nori said what he said at the beginning of 2021 about who things can have a big year. Well, me. Maybe you heard you all laughing at me on the live show a couple of weeks ago when dredging up our start of the year predictions and the fact that I had Alex de manor in my end of year top ten. That was a year ago. Well, yeah. And in response to your laughter, I said, well, you'd probably have laughed if I'd said cam nori as well. Yeah, no, it's fair point and actually the other thing that struck me was the difference in Domino's demeanor and I didn't meant to say that as it came out. From the end of last year when he's playing in Madrid or wherever he was playing in the group stages of the Davis Cup current where Australia were based. But how lifeless it all seemed in his matches versus what it was like the other night in front of an Australian crowd, where he is a hero, they absolutely revere him every movie makes every fist pump every disappointment, the crowd of feeling with him, and it's like he's plugged in to the crowd there. And I do think he could if he could stay fed him and he had COVID last year and he had from what I understood that took a lot out of him and he had some setbacks, but he could have, if he stays fit, a real breakthrough year, I could believe it. I could believe it, Catherine, he could be the Camry of 2022. I could believe that. The other one that I did think and I'm not saying it wasn't just because it was ATP cup, but watching very of yesterday beating nori and it was 7 6 6 one and he was serving above 80% first serves in. I did think zverev looks as kind of composed as I've seen him in terms of just clearly thinking he's it. He is ready. He is going to be the one. That's in his mind, I think he thinks it's inevitable that he's going to make a breakthrough pretty much this year. Well, he said as much, there was a quote going round in the sitter pass press conference that zverev had apparently said, I'm gonna say I missed this, but apparently he said the big three is now me Djokovic and Medvedev on a hardcore or something like that based on the results of the past 6 months and since pass was asked what he made of that quote and he said, let's let the tennis do the talking. Was way better than any of his tweets as an answer. It is a bit of a shame that since a person is a shame anywhere that he's got an elbow injury, but I would love to see him without an elbow injury. Trying to prove that wrong. He's really, because he's done a new tweet 12 minutes ago. He's just in. Remember the power of intention? He says. Is that directed at? In terms of the big three quotes. Well, it's going to be very interesting. All of this stuff, I don't find the storylines on the men's side as does not as many of them that I'm interested in anywhere near as there is on the women's side, but there's two or three that are just intriguing in terms of what where it's going to end up going. And yeah, noticeably though, after that match is very over his interview and the guy said to him, one of those questions that isn't really a question he said, he said, oh, you guys have got a pretty pretty formidable doubles line and haven't you? Because it would run one at the time and he goes, yeah, and he just walked off, and then he was selected for doubles, and then he got absolutely taken to the cleaners by Dan Evans and Jamie Murray and you could see in heaven's body language how pumped up he was to take it to zverev. He did. And I mean, honestly, it was quite interesting. I don't exactly know what was going on with the team selections there for, for instance, Evans being put in with Murray and Salisbury knitted and whether that was the Salisbury injury. And the excellent doubles team from the end of last year, the Davis Cup team for Germany of graves and Tim quits. That was broken up. And Sarah was put in..

"Speaking of sits a pass quotes. David, is it still current information that you have 6 of us muted on Twitter? Yes, it is. Okay. Well, seeing as we're both a bit down in the dumps, maybe we could do with some wisdom, some. Helpful nuggets of philosophy and Stephanie sit to passes Twitter timeline is the place to go for that folks. It's like, it's like free therapy at the moment. Would you like a little sample David? Go for it. Just before you start, how many of these are sits a pass originals? Do we know? I've no idea. Because he does have a bit of a habit of quoting something and sounding like it's from him and then. Yeah, it's like you've got a pile of greetings cards in front of him, or doesn't necessarily credit sources. You know, these diaries that have a quote on every page. It's like one of those. Okay, the quieter you become David, the more you can actually hear. Right. We have the art of life is letting go. Letting go of what? Anything and everything. He says, we mature. That was a total dad joke, David. We mature with the damage, not the years, he says. He says, he says, work until you no longer have to introduce yourself. Can you still hear me? Sorry, I just dropped my earphones. What was that last bit? Work until you no longer have to introduce yourself with his boxing day pearl of wisdom. Okay. On December 27th, he said, photography is a sport. Is it? Well, it's not, it's not, is it? No, definitely don't take Stephanie sits up as tweets is certified fact, David. That's not the point of the title. I want to work out where he's coming. He said, informed is greater than influenced. Yep. And then his New Year's Day pearl of wisdom, would you like that? Yes, please. Cheers to the people who love us. The losers who lost us and the lucky ones who still get to meet us. Cheers stefanos. Okay. Well, that's. He's had an eventful few months, isn't he? I hope he's elbow as well soon. I watched most of his match today. And he is nearly three hours, although he looked quite good to be honest, but I don't know whether you can go back to back if your elbows are in like that and matches like that. And it's been a weird couple of days in terms of results because some and looking at the Russia team. I mean, that's an incredible group that they're part of Russia, Italy, Australia. I mean, that's a really strong group. But Russia decimated a matter. I noticed Medvedev lost yesterday. And then I looked around for faithful backup and karatsev from Davies cup times and there were no bear to be seen. It doesn't reflect well on France that Rublev's not there. Correct serves not there. Action I was opting to play a different tournament to actually get some matches in. He's a Davis Cup winner Matt. He's doesn't need to faff around with the ATP cup. So he could have got matches in if he had just, wow, yeah. Indeed, as it happens, but all those players weren't there. Medvedev lost, and they still managed to beat France. Rublev and karate have both positive COVID-19 cases, weren't they? Yes, so they had to put out the event and isolate and Roman. Who I believe is a former junior Grand Slam champion, and I think was the Russian who was really tipped to come through 7 or 8 years ago and has never managed to break through. I don't think he's ever been in the top 100. He won, never ever then lost to Hugo and bear, who went there, by the way, has a sneaky good record against a lot of players. He's got a winning record against Medvedev sits a pass and zverev. Interestingly they all seem to rate him, don't they? Lots of lots of top players have a sort of little hat tip towards Hugo and bear. Yes. I'm a manicurist being very impressed with him as well. And then Medvedev came out, having lost that singles, in which he was really below part has to be said. He didn't play well. They have lots of errors, lots of just uncharacteristic. While receiving a massage. There was no time to say mates stopped massaging me. I look away now. If you just picked up a bucket and started throwing up in it, right? Yeah. Or a bin. Yeah. I think it was a bin. It was a big deal. I mean, we've all sort of been there. Not necessarily. On a tennis court, live on the telly, well, receiving a massage, but I think as everyone peeked into a bin at some stage, I feel like everyone's peaked in a bin. Part of life, isn't it? Yeah. And anyway, then he won a doubles match. Right. Okay, so can you take out anything as a form guide? If you look back on the couple of editions of the ATP cup in the past, you take anything from the form guide that it gives you for what ends up happening, Australian open should we be reading anything into any of this? Well, Jimmy, was it two years ago that Djokovic won the ATP cup with Serbia?.

"Me, I gotta say or call me off guard when I first saw this week just because we have not seen it in tennis before. And I would sort of confused about it not being used at the grand slams, which are an ITF event. And if Russia is on bad terms with the ITF as a International Olympic Committee member, then I'm kind of surprised it wasn't effective or affecting them at the Grand Slam level as well. We didn't see like Daniel Medvedev when the U.S. open with RTF next to his name instead of our U.S.. So what do you know about this situation and is it going to end at any point? Is this a permanent situation? And were players there, you know, just calling them Russia because I honestly just inclined to call them Russia. I think I'll say my opinion earlier than you can answer this. I think this whole concept is stupid. I think either if you want to make an impact on Russia, to punish them, you ban Russia. You say Russia can't compete, but to let a team in that's all Russians and just use some code word for Russia that's very obvious that has an R in it that stands for Russia, you know? I just think it's pointless. I think it doesn't accomplish anything. But I'm curious what you think and what people around the competition think about RTF. I think you already answered everything necessary from a fan site point of view like it's bullshit in reality. But on paper, you have to do something because Russian got the quality band because of the quality of state orchestrate doping. It's effect. It's well researched by German journalist higher settled in 2015 with quickly though it would be good to get background. I know you know a lot about this topic. But I will say, none of the states wants are doping that we're aware of. Ever impacted tennis. Correct? Yeah, yeah. That's exactly the point. So on the one hand, you have to. Stay doping with a lot of examples but obviously a lot of athletes who are still clean not not have any doping violations. So what to do about this? It's a very tricky situation with a blind spot. I wrote about it before the ATP cup this year for a site online. And the main thing you already mentioned is only the ITF is also bound by the vada coast, the most important code in the global and the doping code. And the Billie Jean King that cup now, and the Davis Cup are the only team events organized by the ITF also the krantz lamps are organized by the ITF, you know that. But the problem is, they call it as a team World Cup event. And only there this rule is there. So they tried. It's not very clear in the roots. And they obviously excuse me because it's not my language. I could explain it way more better and German. So excuse me for but for that, but yeah, basically they don't accept the ATP cup as the team event by the ITF and only the ITF does all the doping controls in tennis. And that in turn is solely responsible for the anti doping fight and the test at all events including the tournament on the ATP tour such as the ATP cup because only the ITF is also bound by the vada coat the most important component and the global anti doping fight that's what I was writing in my article. One last thing I asked how Russia could start their team event the ATP refer to the ITF back then. It's still worth Miller, the longtime anti doping manager set in a mail back then, my opinion, the ATP cup is not affected by the cast decision, but it can cook up is therefore the Russian athletes can start as a Russian team of our prescription. And now they are starting as Russian tennis federation yeah. Yeah. So it's a blind spot. It's a blind spot. They are not also if you would be completely right like when is winning the U.S. open as a single player, you can't show the Russian flag, but yeah, it is what it is. I just have the concept that it's dumb. If you're gonna allow them to compete just admit they are Russians. I think that's sort of half step is silly. Briefly to finish this topic is what it says, actually on the Wikipedia page, I think they summed it up well for Billie Jean King cup. It says, in accordance with the band by the world ended up in agency and in December 2020 decision by the court of arbitration for sport, the team from Russia is not permitted to use the Russian name, flag or anthem, will participate in the 2021 Billy Jean King cut finals as the team of the Russian tennis federation. And we use the flag of the RTF, which the flag of the RTF is three tennis balls, red blue and white that look like a Russian flag. And also, if you look at the Olympics, the ROC team, which is wearing these track suits that basically were just Russian flags. It was like white on top and then blue then red. And so they were brought the flag with them. It's all, I think it's all just kind of farcical. It's on the line underlined what the ITF wrote me in January according to the ITF interpretation effect that these are the Davis Cup bleaching king cap the World Cup and beach tennis, for example, and the World Cup for wheelchair, which a player and then, at the events mentioned, Russian athletes are only allowed to complete as neutral athletes without a flag by anthem and the ITF does not see the ATP cup affected here either. I think you are the first person Yannick and NCR history to ever mention beach tennis on the show. By the way, it's an ITF always talks about we never ever hear anything about being so shout out to beach tennis, I guess. I want to ask about just your experience also on the ground in Prague. You were there. Like you said it was your first time covering a term outside of Germany. Since the pandemic began, what was the access like? What was the experience like as a reporter on the ground? I don't think there were too many reporters there..

"Ira tweeted this. Some sort of negative thing from daniel medvedev's lost against andre group of. Oh here's why deniro medvedev is in trouble heading into the us open congratulations. I now take you less seriously. But for andre rupe left you can absolutely you can absolutely take positives and the big positive was. He didn't break down. He didn't just try to hit his way through everything he was patient. He forced medvedev to make tactical adjustments. You just stopped giving medvedev anything. Easy no more unforced. There's he started taking his backhand down the line a little bit more. He started coming to the net a little bit more. Just throwing different looks at medvedev even incorporating some backhand slice because the same patterns they were in rube. Love trying to mock seventeen on four hands with medvedev somehow tracking them all down and then just ripping the passing shot by ru blood in the end. That wasn't working things like the show. I mean it held that rebuffs. First-serve percentage shopped massively sets two and three but just it was more dynamic than just a first forehand from rupa he started. You know crafting points waiting for start. Stop forcing it. On the third forehand he got of the rallying wait until that sixth seventh and eighth forehand to really open up a crack in the court and attack the neo medvedev through that crack arizona. It was a it was a performance. It's funny because i the i don't wanna see narratives because narratives are always arbitrary and there's no real narrative surrounding andrew rube lab this season but forty one and fourteen in twenty twenty. One doesn't feel that way anymore right. It doesn't feel like he's seventy five percent of his matches of late. And yet you look at the actual results was disappointing. Clay court season particularly. But you look elsewhere so we starts out wins. Atp cup with medvedev doesn't lose. In that event quarterfinals he loses medvedev. Australia wins rotterdam semifinals. Doha loses to rb a semifinals. Dubai loses to carrots semifinals. Miami loses to her finals of monte-carlo loses to safety poss- through april. He was one of the best five players in tennis. I think unequivocally no one would have denied that. And you look at the advanced metrics. He's still one of only five players to be top. fifteen in both hold and break percentage for the season. Be look since that april monte-carlo result. I mean the loss is quarterfinals to center in barcelona round of sixteen seven. Six in the third to is ner. That's fine by the way the loss tow center to and six you. He loses three sets to senegal rome. Quarterfinals five sets strew first round roland-garros five sets to future vich fourth-round wimbledon. The is ner lost five and six canada like you lose disner five and six on a hardcourt that happens sometimes when serves well. He makes the semis of that of an rightly made the final. It was clearly conducive to big-serving yes. It wasn't the best run for him. Post monte-carlo to the start of cincy but honestly there haven't been any red flags for andrew blended anything. It's just like okay..

"I felt fortunate in two thousand sixteen. Because you know like on the women's side you had stomping through and stopping kerber from becoming a gold medalists because the was absolutely going to do that. And then you had you know del po. Taking our novak in the in the first round the man had just won the and he wants a gold medal is the last thing he has to do when he's gone on the first round bitch so it was kind of like you know some even though real was super ugly there were a couple of very key things that that would have made it. You know fifty times uglier than happen but here we are five years later and it could be no ugly because now argue is way worse is just way. Worse is like the girl to say Legend we love you say is then wind from worse to worse. And that's what's happened on the p two this year as just went from worse and i was looking at. I was looking at his matches and novak inbetween australia and paris. Kind of play by say for the most part but it doesn't matter at all because he's one of the big titles yep he has not he. I'm telling you it's not played super well for the most part. Yeah and he has not. He hasn't had to. That's the big thing. That's north of the last three or four years to be honest since he came back. Yes absolutely and i tell people like he especially even in major finals that he's constantly winning. He is not really played his best tennis since that. The two i think two thousand nineteen australian open when he destroyed rafa like he. That was the last time he played like really great tennis finals in route save and he played. I thought he played pretty well. at a was the thing that they had before melbourne last year dainty wind up i thought he played really well to atp cup last year. That's probably last. I felt like oh like he's. He's playing. The level is high. Because i felt like all those matches where the level was really really high it for most of his matches. So that's the last time. I can recall him actually really playing well but even still. That's been a while. And that's not a slam i don't know but he's still winning everything i think he he played. I think he played on played in the australian open final year. Maybe the but medvedev was also just horrible. Was bad seriously all these other slang finals that he's one since that twenty maintaining australian open. You got that one nineteen wimbledon. It was five sets but that match with final set and twenty twenty. Australian open was that was like five cents against team And then yeah. The french open this year totally lost that match. I don't ever get over to mobile. I can't believe it. I was so like i was so excited. And i like i just i. I just can't imagine how you feel because for me. Like i'm not even that into depaz like and i was gutted gutted. Listen i have not felt like that after a grand slam final since like. I don't know when it's been a long time. It was exactly a the serena lost definitely not man's final. I know that i have ever been like not over. White man likes. Not since andy roddick.

Fed Cup to be renamed Billie Jean King Cup

"The Fed Cup has been renamed the Billie Jean King Cup and there's those big plan fair announcements about this week and it's a lovely lovely thing I think it feels so so right there is I think one caveat David that you pointed out on twitter which. Which I very much agree with. How How how much does it really? Well first of all, I agree with you I think I'm ready that it's been renamed. That's The. Caveat was the if we are renaming the Fed, cut the Billie Jean King Cup. It feels even further away that we're GONNA end up having the the great mixed team competition or Fit Slam slammers I'd love it to be. A combination of the Fed Cup or the Billie Jean King Cup in Davis. Cup, that I think the sports so. Hugely needs that feels further away. But maybe maybe that's maybe that's not the case. Maybe the fact that her name is on it and she is may be involved more. We'll bring that closer together because she so much wants that is well, she's. The biggest campaign for. Men and women working together and and being on the same page and being on the same bill for goodness sake. and. Hopefully. That will come in the future I mean. There are those events just don't exist this year. So this is the news news, the renaming, and and that alone really really about just one article Chris Clare in the New York Times right timing done an interview it but a Jianqing, I really enjoy a recommended he coach Bud Collins. Once. Saying that the Fed Cup is a splendid idea with a lame name and he quotes spitting Jean King saying. When a woman does something always think we do it for women when a guy does something, they never say they did it for the guys and so one of the changes I hope I can talk about more and more is that I would like people think that we. Are Doing it for the sport not for Women's Sports and I I thought. Absolutely right. It's It's about time attitudes changed. Yeah I thought that was. A perfect summation of both what Billie? Jean King is about an also how how this could be a a way forward for kind of mixed event and and a combination of men's and women's. Competition together but I mean personally that that that's not been my vision for mixed team event I've I've not thought that it should replace. Davis carpet. Now, village Inking Cup I genuinely think that it could go along alongside them. Both I don't think you need to. Get rid of them and combine it into one I. Think you could have a mixed team event like we had with the Hoffman Cup but make bigger thing out of that, and now we've got that point in the calendar with the ATP Cup and that I think that's the point. Many Times. Cup. Turn. So. Many cups when you did all the cups said back to back, it's Oh it's cup overload kind feels to be redundant to be talking about the of the moment you. Know. What the tent tennis Kinda is anymore but I mean personally I'm just saying I think there's room the space. It would be a great thing for a mix team competition to exist alongside. The Davis Cup in now Billie Jean King Cup that we already have our cup runneth over. A. Carrillo.
