"atlanta hawks" Discussed on The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers

"They have. How can we help move the needle? Drive home different business initiatives or these brands? Sponsors spend dollars with us. To achieve certain marketing, goals and objectives, and by doing so they're associating themselves with our team. They have the reach of our audience. The use of our Ip and we're able to then delivered almost any target consumer business segment so. Whether a company wants to simply build brand awareness. Or drive foot traffic. you know into their stores? reach the population on a grassroots level drive community impact. On that's kind of what we're here to do. In creative ways to accomplish those goals by leveraging our, you know different assets or whatnot so. It's a unique job because it kind of forces you to become an expert in many different industries right so you know I manage a relationship right now with the hawks of our naming rights partner State Farm in OUR JERSEY, patch partner share care so I have to know everything I can about the insurance industry in the health and wellness industry but in doing so you know day to day we get to work with so many different people. Both internally, because our partnerships touch all areas of the organization and also externally because you know, our network has expanded. Tremendously. By all the relationships with these different brands that we have in the different layers within these companies some your point, I don't have one day that looks. Same but you know in Susan. It's a lot of you know working on different promotions. Social campaigns in arena activation meetings with clients. Potential clients. Out of season it's of planning. It's a lot of recapping the year. But. Again. No one day looks like no, of course, not so, why is you got into this role and you found this kind of career path. Why do you feel now that you personally are well suited for partnership activation? Why have you found this to be a good matches? There are certain personality traits that just lineup well, are there specific skills? You have this kind of a natural fit. What have you discovered about this world? That just makes it like where you're fit is in the industry. Yeah I think for me at the end of the day I'm in the relationship building industry so and that's something that I I feel like I'm very good at You know we're in the hospitality. The entertainment industry and I mean of course in this field. It's easy to say you know you got to be creative. And you have to be able to think strategically and have strong business acumen, and that's all important. But at the end of the day, being able to kind of build solid relationships with clients and coworkers. is most important and then. I think for me. Just being able to work effectively in like a fast paced environment that is the sports world It's ever changing and fortunately and unfortunately I think you know it is very agile. And ever evolving, so that's equally as important and I've found myself. Able to do that and buried, you know quick learner because started at the Miami Dolphins having no clue. Participation was a now. Here am eight or nine years later, but. I would say those are probably the biggest for me, and why feel guy I fit in as well as I do. I I started my sports career in Atlanta. At C. N. N. sports illustrated, and I loved the urgency, and the pace I love that fast paced. I loved having everything happened so fast I. do think that's a kind of a skill or attribute that that most of the people I know in the sports. Industry Kinda, like that pace, so I can see why you. To Change Yeah. So. What about the now? Okay? We're living in strange times. We know that I refuse to say anything like the normal or anything like that. I want to stay away from as many cliches possible, but. No Fan Games for the foreseeable future bubbles here all these different things going on all these changes in the league. It's a constant state of flux. How do you sell from a business standpoint? How do you sell potential sponsors? On the fact that you can still reach the fans, even if they aren't coming to state farm, each Irina each game. How are you able to bridge that gap or that concern? Yeah. In a unique time right now I was. Listening to a podcast, the other day and this this woman was talking about. His. Don't panic right like going through can in times of change, and our team's definitely taking that mantra to heart rate now and like I said you know we're problem. solvers were trying to find solutions. For us, you have to kind of take a step back in like attendance stands in the building is just one way that sponsors reach, fans and fans can't come into the arena. then. They're going to have to change the channel to follow the team. In, so fans aren't going to just stay at home in turn off their TV us. In turn off the radio and no longer be on social media, are the Atlanta Hawks social media is heavy. Our community footprint is is really strong, and so for us. We just have to get creative and you know be able to leverage those alternative channels to engage your audience. Yeah, I was looking. This morning I was doing a research, and the when you really break down the capacity for State Farm Arenas, twenty one thousand, and yet you have one point two million twitter followers. I wonder sometimes if we as outsiders somewhat overvalue the important, I'm not saying. The fans in the stadium isn't important. We almost overvalue the reach of that moment, and not realize that there's so many other ways and channels like you said. TV, radio digital social other ways to communicate with fans. Yeah I mean the digital and social media channels have been underutilized undervalued for a while now and I think we're all just kind of starting to realize that. And properly utilized some of the more affected accusations and campaigns are going to be able to come to light, and I also think that. We can't forget the power of association, and you know being able to unify a brand with our. Hawks logo the NBA. Brand you know and use of those logos and kind of how we can amplify for brand brand messages using. The power of Abar Ip. Be So important. For sure, yeah. So. You kind of referenced it earlier in the conversation. BET subtly. How important is it in partnership activation to work effectively cross functionally across groups, I mean because you like you said you're. You're working with the digital team. You're working with the promotions team. You're working with all these different groups within the Hawks Organization. How important is that just a be that relationship focused person that can get along with a lot of different people that can be organized and keep things moving in the right direction, and just really be productive in that way. What's? My Big Fat Greek quitting I. Don't know if you remember wanting. Her the wife. The MOM, she she does this analogy of. Her husband's head, but she's the neck and cheese, a one.

Vinsanity: Is This How Vince Carter's Epic Career Ends?

"Jackie the early ending potentially of the NBA season could also mean the end of one of the longest runs in NBA history. Which at this point is perhaps the most remarkable thing about Vince? Carter's career right. I mean the fact that he's forty three years old he still playing as not playing for great teams so I wanted to start there and ask you a simple question. Why well it's a good question and it's funny because if you go back the fact that this dude has played four decades and played above the rim and then learn to play below the rim. Because that's what I always look at okay if you're a high flying guy and you couldn't do that anymore. Well why are you still playing? Disowning love to the game in respect to the game and the players that played. So that's Kinda why still do it? There's a certain small small number of guys that have incredible Immortal Street cred with other players and he's one of them. You mentioned him to younger players and there is just explode. Can you put in context? How unusual it is that he has played for twenty years. Well it's incredibly unusual because it's taxing game. When I knew I was going to come on this podcast with you. I happen to look game. Seven of the Eastern Conference semifinals which. I'm sure we'll get to but the reason I looked it up because I was curious. How many minutes he played in that game he played forty eight minutes in that game and he played during an era where you played forty plus minutes when the games were important. So that's why I think it's even more remarkable that he's been able to spend four decades because he played during a time when the best players played a lot. So in the intro mentioned that that might have been vince. Carter's final shots a three pointer for the Atlanta Hawks in overtime. What at the season been like for him and his team before that moment. Well it's interesting. They're they're interesting team. I'm sure they're disappointed. Travis Shank has one of the smartest Johnson the league he learned under the Golden State. Warriors Franchise drafted well brought in some really good young players and sprinkled in some veterans to teach them some things. Hence why Vince? Carter is on that roster. Remember I told you before about young players is exploding trae young as one of those players. Because I asked him out to me I still see DECISI. The highlights crazy events has been a true G. for me he's been a guy can lean on. If I have any questions I can go go to him anything. I ne- I can go to vent so and I'm sure he's learned a lot from him but they underperformed if in fact this is the end of the season for them. Now I'm not blaming Vince. Carter for that but I would say that as a whole I think he envisioned being the iota to a bunch of really sharp. Young jet is that we're going to shock the world and it didn't go that way

"They play in Thailand today, Highland, they're favored by four and a half goals. It's pronounced Thiland. Is it? You. Hangover two. Oh, that's right. That's right. I'm sorry. I missed the reference. Oh, that's good. Good good. There. Such a great, great is giving. That's great now that want to report. That's right. All right. So now the United States their favorite to win this, right? The the World Cup again. Or is there like Brazil? The what I think everyone everyone's hoping for. And I think what the final should be would be USA verse France. Oh, that'd be cool. Yeah. Okay. Frances is the dominant. The other dominant team this year. I want to ask you a question in and 'cause I know you're soccer guy, but the women in this country, they don't get paid as well as the men's national team right now. But it doesn't make sense to me because every women's game. I've taken my, my daughter to three, they're sold out. It's like a mazing. Why, why aren't they economically? These seem to be more popular than the men's team my missing something that's a slippery slope there, Tony his it, but I was going to bring this up as part of the dumb, but I decided to stay away from it because I didn't know if he wanted to get into the conversation. But Derek Fisher, who is a coach of the LA sparks recently put a photo up on his Instagram showing his team had a hard-fought win against the Minnesota lynx. Okay. And he took a photo of them waiting for in waiting for their flight at the airport in all of them carry their own. Bags. It doesn't happen in the NBA NBA, the NBA, first of all, you don't wait for a flight in the NBA, the plane is ready. These guy. I mean these players are flying coach. It's a professional day flying coach and a lot of them. They say lot of them the are booked red is because it's cheaper. Yeah, I worked when I worked at minor league basketball whenever I traveled with the team, it was the worst possible way to get to a city that you could take rarely direct flights. I mean, it was awful the Las Vegas, you know, that's about my knowledge that LA sparks, Minnesota lynx are my, my extent of knowing what the WNBA teams are. But there was a Las Vegas team that had a forfeit game because got delayed. And they would've showed up like maybe an hour before tip off. There's, there was a basketball player by the name of Paul, Shirley. I think played for Kansas. But he can't he let me just say this. He kinda got in trouble. He said some things really we're really controversial and. Borderline inappropriate. But nevertheless, he had a book called can I keep my jersey and it just chronicled his life as a travelling basketball player trying to make a living playing basketball. So he he's been all over the world. He played in all the minor leagues in this country, but he also played in the NBA a few times a few times, you get ten day, contracts, and one of the stories that he wrote about in his book was he was one time in Winnipeg in the CBA or someplace like that in the north and got called up by the Atlanta Hawks to be part of a ten day contract and they told them pack your bags go to the airport. He said when he got to the airport, they checked in his luggage, and he did not have to see his luggage again until he was in the hotel room of where they were staying on the road with the Atlanta Hawks. Somebody from the Atlanta Hawks from the moment he checked in as a CBA player. But the moment got on the plane, he was part of the NBA that bag went to Lanta somebody from the hawks gut that bag put it on the team plane and brought it to his hotel room. He did not have to see it again. Did not have. Handle it until the unpacked it on his bed in the hotel that he was staying is a member of the Atlanta Hawks and Derek Fisher has got a point. But the economics are different. The economics. The average the, the average salary in the WNBA seventy five thousand the earners like one fifteen. And that's even that's not even scratching the surface of the league minimum for the NBA, right? But at the same time, you look at, you know, look, how global the NBA's become I mean look, how many sponsors they get how many viewers jersey cells all around the world list goes on and on. And on TV deals. You can kind of see why it's that way. And also to this, this was a league. Listen. I it's it was this is all negotiated. This was all negotiated after years and years and years of being around. Listen, there was, I'm sure there were pro charter jets back when Bill Russell was playing and whatnot. Sure the Celtics were big enough to, but not all the teams were not all not playing. Syracuse buffalo Kansas City, not all the teams were but over time when the when the league was really building this things players said, hey, listen. We want our own rooms on the road. We want this per diem. We want to travel this way, we want, you know, and the league capitulated to that sin. Okay. Yeah. We'll do that the WNBA is still it's only been around with twenty something years. That's really still unfortunately still young to start. You've got to build it up to build it up. And that's what with the women's soccer the national team. I say their point like there's these girls are going crazy for this team on the global stage if you compare the, the success US women men. I mean obviously early on. Other countries was still foreign to them for the have women play soccer. I remember reading a story about the team coming out of Mexico. We're just full of housewives. Yeah. I mean just I mean, literally just like we need we qualify. Let's put a random team together. Women. Yeah. Most of most of the Mexican team was made up of, of US born soccer players who have who have Mexican parents. Wow. Born in Mexico. They were born in the US play the US. They went back to Mexico to go play. Yep. Yeah. But you hear those crazy stories all the time, and it took a long time for Brazil, I don't even know if Brazil, the Brazilian soccer team has accepted the Brazilian women's team. I don't think the country has accepted the Brazilian team. I got you that it's, you know, that, that is still like almost a taboo foreign thing for any woman should be doing that. That's man's territory. Well. I was watching around the horn yesterday, and they were talking about that. Norwegian player who's boycotting, because he wants, you know, quality, a number of other things. And like everyone kind of danced around it a little bit. You know, like, hey, you may not be the right thing to do. But you know I understand where points coming from, you know, Bob Ryan was like no. This is awful. She's doing at the wrong time, she selfish you make bigger stand. If you play play for your team. And, you know, he he had no qualm saying this is not a smart move at all. Honestly, we kind of seen in our for I and our country. Virtue player taking a need and all of a sudden you can't find a home. Right. And so there's no, there's no voice voice anymore, right? "I mean, you have some of those coaches who don't allow phones after a particular time. It just depends. You know, that's just what you know to to each his own. But you know, that's. One thing. I tried to. I mean, it's it's tough to tell the guy like stay off social media. I mean, I I'm still on it and see what's going on. But it doesn't run my life. It's not, you know, end all be all with what said, whether it's from media outlets. Whether it's from just random people fans, or you know, opinionated people who just feel like they can just say what they want. I mean, it's just like, it's a matter of opinion. And it's just it's it's kinda high goes, but it's tough because. I'm I'm I'm going from. Social media that was never around to hear it is these guys grew up in the social media era. So that's a part of them. And it's so tough to kind of take that away. We're speaking with Vince Carter about how the world has changed for the worse particular over the last twenty years, social me. So tell me it's you know, again, your forty two. Let me say this, though, the argument some of the young the young arguments are about social media because I will we'll be the first to admit social media. It has a lot of positive things that go that go to it as far as promoting your brand. And all that stuff. It's kinda when you let the negative side of social media take over your mental state your game. So so that's the part of it that I kind of try to help guys. Cya away from I just wanna say that. Because I that was we've had plenty healthy arguments on locker room about the good and bad or social media. You know, and I just wanted to say that before we move on. So go for it. No. I get it. But you know, one of the things is that nobody likes to be criticized in one thing. You know, I'm sure you've learned over the years to is no matter how long you've been doing it. No matter how big a figure you might be. I've learned that. You know, nobody likes to be criticized, you know, it could be the biggest star in the world, and it hurts and it takes people take it personally. And now they can see every single criticism out there in a way that they were shielded from before that has to have a detrimental effect, your state of mind sometimes at because think about like you look at the biggest stars in the world. It's just talk about let's say LeBron James, you know. So it in our day will let's let's say. Toby well before the social so let's say, Michael Jordan or the stars of that time. When you criticize those guys you maybe here from nineteen twenty thousand in arena. And then maybe read it a week later in the magazine, blah, blah, blah, or that night on sports center, fun now, it's instantly. So let's say fifty thousand fifty million people are following LeBron. And if they have something negative to say, it's right there, and then goes right to him if they wanted to so it's it's it has it has a different effect. So it's just I think this the error like I said, it has made us sensitive because it's more people to attack one person at one time. Now as opposed to, you know, in your in Rena, and you go to the on the road, and they will you or, you know, they're yelling as okay, it's like, okay. It's over with. It's constant. I, you know, and it's not twenty thousand people. It's twenty million people now nowadays, can you imagine? How? Any followers. Michael, jordan. Have if social be with around everybody. I was asked that all the time when I started, you know, the young guys, can you could I imagine what life would be like if Twitter Instagram Snapchat with around like my first couple of years. I I couldn't imagine you're from the flaxseeds, you're from the facts, absolutely..

"He was in remarkable shape. His body was at temple and eat like all these small meals every day. And he did the fitness was, you know, incr-. I mean, he probably had two percent body fat. But I asked him the same question. I just asked you, you know, to what you tribute your longevity. And he said this. I'm not kidding. He said the key is my wife, and I have an agreement. He said she she does not ask me or tell me anything about family and kids before eleven in the morning each day. That I could get out free right stress-free have my Cup of coffees. Go outside read, the newspaper has Cup of coffee. You know, hear the birds tweeting in the trees and all that kind of stuff. Do you have maybe meditate a little bit better a little bit? I mean, he said that was the key. I'm not sure how many how many people can get away with that. Do you have anything along those lines to keep you stress? Not at all. You know? Like, I say, it's just like the willingness to do whatever it takes because I can I can I can give a blueprint to every not even a young guy, of course, but them too, but it's all old guy. And it's kinda like you'll see it and say, okay, instead of doing ten things you'll do nine thing that I sorry cool. And then maybe a month later, you'll do eight things or and then maybe two three months later, you're doing five or six things. And it's just all of a sudden like dang, how come I feel whatever, you know? And that's the biggest thing I think all of the guys in their forties from Terry. I think he's he's mid forties. Right. A still doing it. You know, I think you talk about these things like six minutes a game. I mean as six plays a game. Maybe not even that. Right. But the thing is, you know, for the guys who are playing in in their forties in late list, say late thirties too. Because it's still a compliment. I I feel like. We all know our body. Well, enough to know what it takes to kind of have us ready to go. You know? And I think that's the biggest thing as you're younger. You're still learning. What works, you know? Of course, obviously dieting the right things to eat the right time to eat the right things to eat before games after game. So and so forth at this point playing this long, you tend to to know what to stay away from when your body feels like such and such what you need to do the kind of subside pain to to find the energy. And that's that goes along with the willingness to do all the things that I know sometimes when my lower limps feel bad like achilles. Or if my ankle is tough that means, you know, my cast tight. So I need to work on my cats, and he'd distress a little more in my my my cafe, you know, things like that. When you learn your body, you're able to kind of get around some of the you got teammates since were less than half to rage. Some of your most talented teammates are twenty years old. You're. Forty two. Dynamic work in the locker room. I'll tell you what you when you're round when you when you're around it long enough. You know, I tend to listen and in and then once you kind of figure, you know, out the culture what did likes and don't don't dislike of the younger guys. And you know, what makes them tick? It's kinda easier to kinda coexist with each other like they talk, you know, I could easily say oh back in my day. You know, how parents would say, oh, we're not when your age, I would walk all these. Now, you know, it's easy to say that. But it's kinda like now. You know, you say trade trade sits next to me. You know, he's what twenty. Yup. And like I was like I've been playing longer you've been alive, and you know, your dad, and I I'm a few months older than us, dad. So it's kinda like, okay. You know, people say, okay. What did you talk about? We talk about basketball. I I mean, obviously. And then you know, basketball opens doors and situations on the bus bus ride plane ride opened up doors into different types of conversations that we've had that sometimes as well beyond these years and right in his wheelhouse..

"That's right. That's right. So so you guys that was your last year Carolina. You guys won the east regional you went to the final four you at Antoine. Jamison were the stars that team. And I had this very distinct memory when you guys won the regional defeating Yukon. I think it was right in the final regional in. I was in your locker room to interview you and Antoine. And I remember my late colleague Stuart Scott was there because he's a tarheel. I remember you guys spending some time, and he was so happy for you guys. It was such a big moment. Do you? Remember that scene? I do I do remember that. I remember the moment. I remember following short against Utah. I mean, I remember it like it was yesterday. It's it's one of those things that you tend to hold onto forever, and that was like twenty one years ago, actually. And and it's like, you know, when tournament time comes around, and you know, they tend to show the history of the tournament. And of course, when the final four comes it showed the history of the final four, that's when those memories become more vivid as far as like, we're getting there. I I mean people expected us to play in the finals I wanna say both years, and we fell short. So it was just. A painful painful situation. I think both times we had a significant read and we had Arizona under control in the first half in early in the second half. And next thing, you know, my baby mile Simon AJ Bramlett bringing some names from the past Michael Dickerson. They turned it up. And and we fell short and then the following year accomplishing the goal to get back to the final four back in that situation. And then we fall short to Andre Miller led team a triple double against. That's like, I mean, I tell you. I remember it like it was yesterday. Well, it's a good thing. Vincent after all these years. You've just let it go. You know, it's good that you're not clinging to this any. Yeah. We're speaking to Vince Carter who at forty two is still very much a productive player in the NBA. This is I guess you're twenty first season. You you've played fourteen hundred sixty six games in the NBA. So let me cut to the chase to what do you attribute? This remarkable long jetty say every it's tough to pick one thing and say, this is been be gym that I hold be deeply where I share the people. I think the number one to the competent the denominator for me is my willingly my willingness to do anything and everything it takes to still be here because it's a laundry list of things you have to do that. I need to do to prep and prepare and just to to to be ready to play each and every day, and it's one of those things where you just can't skip steps. And I think that's where I've been able to succeed over some other guys who probably should be in the league. It's just like if you have a list of ten twelve things you can't just do seven eight of those things and expect to to last because it tends to wear you down. Or, you know, your body tends to tighten up. I mean, when you get older, as you know, more you exercise, the more you need to stretch on the more you need to keep your weight on the control. So all those things matter. So the process that I have to go through I'm willing to do. And I think that's been the the the thing that has gotten gotten me over the top. And and kept me going outside of of course, my love for the game. So I still love playing still love competing. I mean, I still take wins and losses, you know, the same as I did in college as you can tell so I mean, it's just it's just a fun thing in this hard to imagine not playing the game. And I gotta tell ya Vince years ago, there's a long time ago. I did a story about Julio Franco who was the oldest position player ever baseball. And I think he was forty eight at the time he was still playing he was a remarkable physical..

"All right. Little bit of a change up. Here. We gotta finish out. Our look at these divisions before the trade deadline, or at least you two of the remaining three because we got the mock traded line that we're going to be recording tomorrow. If all goes, according to plan that will be part one of that will be out tomorrow night. So we got to set the stage here for that exercise. And let's start with one of the teams that for the second straight year of the last year. They ended up not really doing that much at the deadline figures to be at the center of a lot of this the rebuilding Atlanta Hawks the reason Atlanta could be at the center of a lot of things is that they have a combination of players that are of interest in a value to other teams that are not of used particularly to them in this. You know, obviously, Jeremy land deadman others guys can help. I'm not saying they can't, but they can be of more value on another team. But also because those guys are expiring contracts, which either allows the hawks to move them in different ways or even as vessel for taking on. On multiseason money, and then they could get an asset for that. And also because they have camp as more who you know is dealing with an injury right now. But when he's back can absolutely help a team. Yeah. And so there are couple of conceptions a couple of things that they're going to be dealing with here. Really the trade of a guy like Lynn guy like deadman, your high end backup even low end star type of player who's on expiring contract. Those trades four first round picks do not appear to exist any longer. And so how do you get up to I Ron value while you need to take on salary that goes past the season? Again, there is expiring money this year. But really you would think the teams are going to be trying to get off of bad bunny in twenty twenty as well. And to me, that's how you can get up to a first round pick. And then you also help a team compete for the season. So you might also say we'll give you both Lynn and deadman, maybe even. Take both of those guys and taking back another twenty million or so for next year the price of taking on salary seems to have gone down a little bit since the last couple years. We're used to say it was about twenty million in bad money for one first round pick. But we've seen really that that has gone down to some degree the the last trade of the silk that happened was early in the season, George hill cata useful player, whether you like hill or the Lynn deadman combination is probably I of the beholder and then taking out in the bad money of delved ova and Henson which is about a combined twenty million for next year that netted a first round pick for the cast, but it was many years out. And it's also protected in such a way that if you undecided coop Elise. Made the Cavs never even see it in it ends up being second rounders. So all that said, there's no reason for the hawks to hold onto these guys other than maybe just a winning if he were games this here, which isn't as disastrous as it used to be. But you know, they're probably the worst. They're gonna finishes fifth. You would imagine. So. So yeah, I think that's the conception who are the partners though, who might be willing to do that. That is a really big problem for them..

"He's going to be taken on the Laker. So here's the problem for the Lakers tonight. Now, clearly, we know the whole. They're not playing well without LeBron. Correct. But okay, see is lost to the Atlanta Hawks. So the Atlanta Hawks are not a good basketball team where they wanted to teams that put up one forty four a couple nights ago. Right. They put up one forty so at Lanta, scorch them and okay. So he's defense is one of the best defense in the league. If not the best I think, maybe not after that particular game. But. Ooh. So those will be hot west Rosen. Be hot Palmdale going to be hot. So this is not a great spot for the Lakers because I I know each individual and be a game in a regular season situation. But when you get embarrassed by one of the worst teams in the league, and you're actually a good team. Generally you bounce back. Not a good situation for the Lakers heading into o'casey tonight. Remember is it a one off? And you say that team had an amazing night. Are you score one hundred and forty plus points in a game? You had an amazing night. Now, do you lose to a team without LeBron James that album sudden, it becomes a situation? We gotta start talking. Hey, come on coach what's going on Billy Donovan, but see when Lakers lost to the Knicks? I it was like ooh that was bad whenever it's just one game. They lost to the cab start putting everybody on notice that you can't this is this is not what you're not supposed to do this. Right. So I think for okay see tonight is going to be one. And obviously it's going to be a game in which I think Oklahoma City fans are going to give it to the Lakers a little bit just because they. They secured the bag or secured, the P you wanna say the Lakers couldn't secure the P, Paul George. What you from? I'm from Palmdale. I love it. I love it. Man, you want ask Michael if he thinks I mean, he might have. You do. Well, that's in a second about you'd think in the warriors are the like boogie said that they're the most hated team in sports. "A generous giving soul I'm giving you not one but two phenomenal interviews in one action packed episode here. Yes. A double feature on the full forty eight. We have Lloyd Pierce the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. I sit down with him followed by my lawyer waited re or the long awaited return of Adam silver, the NBA Commissioner to the full forty eight. He wasn't fact the first guest on this podcast when we kicked it off about a year and a half ago, really great to get Adam back on the podcast. We covered a lot of ground in this interview. Obviously at a ton going on in the NBA. And so we this could have gone any number of directions. But I wanted to talk without him. I up about tanking and lottery reform. This is the first year where they have changed. The odds for the lottery has it actually changed the way teams are operating or even the way fans are rooting. For their teams to fail. Adamant. A lot of interesting thoughts on that topic. We also discussed the possibility of marijuana being removed from the NBA's banned list. They still test randomly test players four times a year. That's more than any of the other major North American sports and given the way that society is moving does that really make sense anymore. Again, the Commissioner has some really interesting thoughts on that. And where they are heading with that. And I got an update important update on the age limit and the discussions about removing the age limit when that might happen. And we also touched on the recent comments by or comments attributed to Robert server, the Suns owner about the potential threat to leave Phoenix if they didn't get the public funding that they wanted to renovate their arena. So Adam silver, always very thoughtful interview. And always a really fun discussion. Great conversation. So we will have. That but first is Lloyd Pierce. Of course, it's his rookie season as a head coach in the NBA big challenge with the Atlanta Hawks a team that has obviously rebuilding obviously has gone young a lot invested in trae young. They're they're rookie point guard. And when you listen to Lloyd Pierce, you'll understand exactly why the hawks hired Lloyd incredibly thoughtful. And he has just very grounded has a philosophy knows exactly what he wants to do in terms of establishing a culture with this new team all the lessons that he's brought to bear after his time working in Philadelphia on Brett Brown staff and prior to that couple of other places, including Cleveland, and Memphis, just a wealth of knowledge. And as I say just a really thoughtful approach, I think the hawks are in great hands with Lloyd Pierce, obviously going to be a while before that team can get moving back in the right direction. Get the talent that they need. But they've got a great steady voice at the top of that with Lloyd Pierce. So. There you go to interviews both of them fantastic. "Anthony is gonna join the Houston Rockets for basically no money because the Atlanta Atlanta Hawks are gonna pay him the twenty seven point nine million that he's that he's owed. This has been a security route to Houston for Carmelo, Anthony. And now everybody's asking with James harden with Chris Paul. And with me Mike dantonio is it gonna work? And will he accept a bench roll Royce young covered Carmelo in Oklahoma City. Last year, he covers the thunder for ESPN was on Spain and Fitz last night. He says, he doesn't think that Melo is going to accept eventual in Houston. Maybe he goes to the rockets with the different mindset and look. He's already going to be taken a little bit of an ego hit when. He has to sign a better minimum deal. That's already a tough pill. I think mellow swallow right there. And so for him to walk into Houston, I think his probably expectation is going to be to start, and if you could pitch to mellow and convinced them that man as a second unit guy where you can do all the things you wanna do, you can tap step, you can isolate, you can play the type of game you want to when you're just abusing second units and you're out there going against other benches. We can let you run the show and you could be the guy, but it's just on a limited basis and the thunder tried to pitch them on that dried to sell them on that. And he just wouldn't have it. A little bit of the hard time to believe that he's going to Iraq. It's all right, but you know, number one, he got traded to Oklahoma City and opted in understandably. Why? Because who else was going to pay him that kind of money. And you know, had a chance to basically engineer his escape from Oklahoma City, and he had his reasons for not accepting that role. And maybe he alternately doesn't do it in Houston, but he's going there on his own accord. He's going there willingly. And I would imagine at some point during the negotiations to go to Houston as he's weighing other offers, it had to come up. What is role is going to be minutes per game? Is he going to start come off the bench? I think this can work. I think this can work for one basic reason. I watched game seven of the Western Conference finals. I watched the rockets, miss twenty seven consecutive threes. I saw room for a guy that can still score from multiple spots on the court. We could talk about how outdated the mid range jumper is Carmelo. Anthony can still make them wasn't there room during that over twenty seven. Stretch for an occasional mid range jumper. There was room for Carmelo Anthony, and you're only beating the Golden State Warriors four times in a series by outscoring them Carmelo Anthony can still even at this stage of his career help you outscore people..

"I bet you did that you would have third this year no last night i was i was shocked at how confident he shot the bar yes i was very surprised by the real ugly but it's still ugly barak care is not a beauty characters there's been a lot of ugly bre highlyeffective shots in history basketball's i don't care about how it looks i just needed to drop last night it was dropping you could tell he was confident he wasn't hesitate when he was open on a three pull the trigger that is correct and a couple of hours he pull the trigger and he's not a step back like already knows doherty it also uh o o nile arguing that you know the little guy and i t he made a few nice passes you know some looking at them like okay mediaplay the hawks you know i started saying to myself we to as the man now it will on a way better than i don't look at who they played as much as i look at the way things flow sure i folic here but i don't care to pull into the pony you pull you put out there but when you shoot the ball will you in sink in everything just kind looked smooth you appreciate that limoges do let me ask you a quick question a quick sidebar mmhmm mark you even got fined six hundred thousand dollars for talking about tanking in the atlanta hawks have literally just bought out two players who have played on playoff teams in book didn't trade them for anything right bought them out here and let them both go to philadelphia and yet no one is talking about them getting fine for anything because their owners didn't do what say it exactly it's the only difference though but it's a big gives more agree juice brca says say my name on for reasons but isn't and we'll say it allow a put stuff on it but isn't it more egregious what they're doing uh no i mean just buying these do nothing margaritas than fred i'll say in it for an all santa is the most egregious movement you can do i just think it's weird that nobody the chicago bulls benched robin lopez their gm's talking about wanting to play the young players because you know give them experience i come on.
