"Thistles Andrew Bogus with a CBS Sports Minute when the Atlanta Hawks fired head coach Lloyd appears back on March 1st. I did one of these were deciding the team for how it fired Pierce. I thought he deserved better than getting canned after running a practice like things were normal. Thankfully, I didn't say like many others did. Atlanta was making a mistake by making a coaching change. The Hawks were 14 and 20 on March 1st there now 25 11 underneath McMillan and clinch their first playoff spot in four seasons last night, McMillan is doing another solid job and underrated career. Trey Young's a star. You know that John Collins scores 89. And Clint Capela is a walking double double. Whether they play the heat or the Knicks in Round one. Atlanta Hawks Fire Coach Lloyd Pierce

"We're gonna start with the atlanta hawks. Who fired their coach. Lloyd pierce today. You could see this coming for a while. And i guess i'm gonna start here. We can get into whether he was doing a good job or not. It seems like he wasn't their fan. Base was happy they. I think they blew eleven. Fourth quarter leads just as year they They're fourteen and twenty for the season. They're close enough to like the four five seed where you can make a case you do this now. Somebody writes the ship. You could still be a top five. Playoff tim my question. Is this when you build your team around this. Entire philosophy new spent three years doing that in that philosophy isn't necessarily working. Isn't that the fatah the gm in the owner over the coach. The coach has to be the fall guy. First and then i think the gm travis slink end up being the second fall guy in the offseason but why does the fog. I always have to be the coach. I with this roster. That clearly doesn't work. I mean it's always the coach because the gm is boss. So you're the gm that's probably the first thing like whenever coaches fired it's almost always gm's ultimately right. Yeah who by the way who hired this coach so a going backwards and this is why i always get criticized from From hawks fans. I'm too hard entree on i'm not. I'm just realistic on training. I'm not sure he's a winning player. He might be. He might turn into winning player right now. I'm not sure where it is. I know he's of the worst offenders in the league but since they got him and i think it all starts to that luca trade and the fact that luca became good right away and they went all in on trae young and that they got basically trae young camera tish They're trying to build this infrastructure to make trae young succeed. That is the goal of this franchise. From the moment they made that trade and they kind of anoint him as disguise can be are steph curry so every decision they make after that is based around this premise. That trae young could be steph curry and that leads to three straight years of decisions that when you look at them early. I don't think they worked. So i don't know who the coach could have been. That would have made all the moves they made. If you're just starting with the fundamental premise. Trae young as the next curry. 'cause he's not. Yeah i think you got to look at it like year one and year to always going to be busts with trae like we're gonna rebuild last year. They're playing and honor like thirty minutes like nineteen and twenty one. So really it's like. This is the first year i really counts for them. This is what the air they spent their money. They had the quote unquote team. They want around trae sh- really to me. It was like two years. We're just gonna burn and year. Three years could come together. And that's why pierce was fired so quickly is because the pressure is on schlink now. Big time. I got a two year window to do every wanted with really no expectations of rigging results.

Just off a chance meeting a myself and my manager became an entire department. So i pretty much work fulltime and turner in the uk. While i was in grad school full time and it was a phenomenal experience. And i hollywood have never left london except it was incredibly expensive and my mom. was older and disabled at the time. And so. I promised that i would come back home to help. Take care of her. I'm an only child and she was managing a lot on her own. And so at the end of my program i ended up getting a roll back in atlanta. At which is crazy. Because i wanted a brand strategy job in there were nine and so actually came back an hd graphics producer which at the time people knew me as an artist. Of course you can do three d graphics. And i learned so much and i'm so grateful for that opportunity but i spent a couple of years working at turner pretty much making cullum. Mp as violators at the bottom of the screen like watch pretty woman tonight at seven. That was me Version ing them out and it was great because at the same time they were building up. Internal design chops within the company said farming's out to agencies so i also got to be the liaison between our creative group marketing team in helping to build up an internal agency so that was great and then a couple of years later. Turner had acquired court. Tv and so my first big brand strategy projects. I got hired on as a brand manager to work on the rebrand from court. Tv to shoot ev. And that was an amazing experience in really hold my brand strategy chops just in working from suit. Let's doing all of it. "I think that's kind of where i'm at. I my biggest problem is the mason plumlee signing. I don't get that at all. Like i think german grant you can justify mason. Plumlee getting paid decent to. What was it again. it's like it's like eight and a half year like almost the years right. Yeah so. I mean this is a fine player but that much money was like like mo heartless getting three and a half million dollars compared to mason. Finally getting a half is ridiculous to me. i'd say the the other bigger player wasn't assigning it was a trade but then he today. He signed an extension to stay there. Stephen adams to the pelicans. I was on by this low. Because derrick favors. I guess we can talk about that too. He's gone so you need a defensive style center is probably won't open space the floor next his i on which adams can't favors couldn't Bu- adams's there. I don't yeah. It's it's a. Hefty extensions two years thirty five million a lot I think he's a fine player than he's a fine rim-protector he's not a great switcher. Offensively solid posts up gagging sets great screens. But you can't space. The is a half these passer i. It's just. I don't love it. But i don't hate it and it's just kind of i don't see how he fits into their time line and what they're doing. Maybe the veteran leader. But yeah. I mean i guess like i love the idea of him as a veteran presence there but signing him to an extension before even seen seen him play with your cores. What's weird to me like i don't. I don't understand that. I think and especially to like just the money that he's getting like he's really declined. The last couple years athletically I mean he's still a good player. But i don't know if i'm comfortable paying that much money As especially like if. I haven't seen him play with my guy is like how are you supposed to know. Okay we can paying this much. Like i dunno. I have questions about that I still don't buy the idea. Like i saw how of people throwing out. Well we don't know if it's going to be the full time five or not is never going to be a fulltime five just like you cannot. I'm sorry i maybe he'll play some lineups as the five boroughs. I just don't get how we can look at zion and be like. Oh he's going to be a fulltime five sunday like now. He's six six. It's not gonna happen. Yeah now i agree. It was as he's never going to be five. He's on talk more about the favors wanted you. Definitely utah's wrote about this weekend. Yeah which is So you go ahead them. I liked it. Derrick favors slogan player. He's similar marcus. Obviously a lot younger va like. He struggled in the bubble and looked really bad but he added a weird year because he was injured. The beginning of the year His mom pass away so that you know he was offer some time with that as well obviously took a hit on him but he was really good with them completely..

"I guess if monteiro going to a place it's kind of bereft of center depth or Without someone who you if you need somebody who can just get easy buckets On the offensive end. I guess harrell makes sense for you for the lakers. It just makes no sense to me and signing him using the mlb their way more impactful players that they could have gotten to plan the wings where they aren't deep right now. Which so to me. I thought it was just confusing. I think it's kind of redundant. I don't love the idea of playing Like he's gonna was. Is he actually playing the five like his. Marcus saw. Anthony davis is going to be playing the five. So you're mantra zero is going to get the four like i don't i don't really like that very much It just it's kind of. And i think it makes their defense where stu you will. I actually just saw that. He signed for that. I don't know why. But i thought he signed for much more I thought it was like a year fifty million dollars for two years. Nineteen don't hate it. But i don't love it like you said you can't really start him next to a ad because he can't protect them and then you probably can't blame it four because he can't switch out on the braga that's my thing. What if okay if you open up that money instead of jae crowder going to phoenix maybe. La gets jae crowder on a two year twenty million dollar deal and obviously that's a hypothetical but i mean wouldn't you rather have mojo at the money that he just signed with. I would rather have mohawk less than his money than Than signing model says veteran. No he signed. I think was the was like three and a half million alka. Yeah yeah one year. Three point six but even then i would take mo at at mantras money. Yeah he's a better fit. Harold gis they use them at sam l..

"Is fantastic Chris thank you get man. We really appreciate it in saturday dude. That was a that was a blast. Chris was awesome. I mean i'm just kinda wanna go through the biggest signings and how it affects those teams and stuff like that. I think the best places stars. Probably gordon hayward yeah no unequivocally I think just coming from a non boston perspective for me like a. I was in the middle of recording a podcast when it happened and it was shocking as hell the see. They went to charlotte if anything. I expected him to resign with boston. If it wasn't gonna end up in indiana I wonder what your thoughts are on how dan yan channel this because there was the potential back a milestone who obviously is a valuable player. Not nearly as good of a player as gordon hayward. But you know there's a thought an idea behind your at least getting back in asset in value right And i also think something that gets lost in. The sauce. Is losing gordon hayward contract. You lose that money and you can't really just get it back like you lose a ton of a tradable asset just by losing the contract inherently which is bad. Its own right Just water thoughts general in how everything reportedly went down with the agent. How he handled his dealing with with indiana. Well so the thing We don't know if aims will so his thing. hey. I said that's why now. But hayward was technically an unrestricted free agent. Yeah and the whole idea was some indiana trade so they can get something back. But if hayward didn't if hayward wasn't gonna get a hundred four hundred twenty mil from indiana he could have said. I'm not gonna go to indiana. I'm doing the sign and trade. I'm going to charlotte so texting. If that's the case it was hayward's decision age. Couldn't do anything with indiana Reports are that the offer there from indiana Died not see that. I thought i saw gary washburn posts. The washington post offer and turned mcdermott. Boston wanted. turner warren But oh i meant okay. Indiana wasn't offering the four for one twenty. I'm pretty sure. No i'm saying the plane. Okay all right. I was confused is he was. I think he knows putting out. Four for one hundred. Was there. maximum. Going to investigate hayward was like i'm gonna go get twenty million extra charlotte Which i get. Maybe he wants to also go to a smaller market pressure in charlotte. You're like they're not even like expected to make the postseason and he went and got that bag which. I don't have a problem within. I think i something came out yesterday. That said he was In in talking about mouth turn a signing trade for hayward they said that aims was asking about the league about turner what he could get for him and apparently the his values are so low so that might have been part of it. But if if that's the case that turner was on the board for hayward heroes willing to take a discount to indiana in the hanes Faulk that up. Then that's a. That's a bad bad..

"Who's podcast. i'm your host mark schindler as always joined by my co host. Nate georgie nate. How are you doing today man. I'm good. I'm super excited. Talk about lander because they are fucking what they're doing right now yeah they have been felt like a little bit like a gm simulation to k- Watching what travis lengths doing. It's been pretty awesome to see So worse joined today by one of the best young writers out there who i really look up through chris. Kirschner from the athletic covers team. Chris how're you doing. are you guys. Good it's definitely a lot less warm. Where we're at a nate's mass. I'm in ohio. So we're gearing up for snow will you You're you're what's it like in atlanta right. Now it's it's very nice today Sixty one degrees very funny aren't they were moving No complaints at all definitely definitely so a jump right into a man. There's there's so much to ask about. I mean number one Bogging bogdanovich his. That hasn't officially gone through There's still time for sacramento mash. The offered but right now based on reporting it looks like That will go through for atlanta What are your thoughts so far just on on bogged on potentially coming in likely taking starting role that seems to be part of the reason why he would want out of sacramento. Yeah well if if it does go through A recording this before it's actually official but if it does go through I do think that he's the kind of player that trae young and the hawks. I've been looking to add in the backward. Because while i think kevin heard her is a fine young player He has proven in his two seasons yet that he can take over a game like we've seen with bogdanovich so far in his career By donna vicenza three level score herders is more so just the a three point shooter. Both those guys do have some playmaking ability I think Bogdonovich is more proven and Has a higher ceiling when it comes to me and a secondary planemaker next Young so if they ended up getting bogdanovich..

"I think that's a really interesting way to look at what Atlanta could do in the off-season. I really I really like the idea of that Fleet there. I don't know how you feel about that Andrew. But I think that'd be a great fit is too small to have the backward exit tray. Like I know he's in his Defender to put it under though. Yeah, but I mean you want him guarding once you can guard up a little bit but I think you'd rather have somebody like a De'Anthony Melton who's much longer than Friday's like so I I just I know like what are your thoughts on that fit Andrew? He's someone that I think does fit. Well, he's a very good shooter like you mentioned. He's a good Defender. I just think that you're I mean, he's another guy. He's not a restricted free agent, but offered to get you know Toronto to effectively back down. I think you're gonna have to really pay up for him. Like I I think at least you know, the Broadband deal is, you know, sort of provides them her the parameters for one thing. I think Brogden makes like around twenty two million something like that for a year and I can see him even getting up to 25 million per year and I would kind of hesitate to pay that he's had issues with injuries and he's a dog Regard so he's done with it. I mean obviously makes sense on paper like a secondary ball-handler a scooter and Defender. I just don't think I'd want to you know pay a hundred million dollars for Fred vanfleet. I mean, he definitely would make them better but my concerns to be that your your your building like a 4C, you know or a v c o something like that as opposed to like a true Contender, but he does make sense and they should consider him at least on some level. What would be the number you're like as willing to go for him? Like per year. I'd walk away at eighteen. Probably. I feel like that's just my opinion. I don't think I would want to go too much higher than that. Yeah, I mean if you could do like over four eighty something like that and that would be fine. He just you know, I would just prefer to pay less and get a younger player. Exactly offensively. I mean that's definitely not the offensive player than bleed. But someone that still has you know some upside to be sort of like an Eric Bledsoe type player someone like that. It just makes a lot of sense that would probably prefer to go that route as supposed to pay, you know top dollar for a free agent like pencil who is very good. Like he's a Top fifty player probably in the league in my opinion. I just I wouldn't want to make too much of an investor him. Yeah. Yeah, that's fair. I you know, it's it's always on what the front office like, are they going to try to shoot for the ceiling or they going to are they content with middling in the middle of the back East? Hope things break right? I mean, that's just I mean you go without a whole Rabbit Hole there with you know, small-market teams and all that. But exactly if you if you guys don't have anything else left on free agents I concur Talk a little bit about the draft..

"But when you know, it's guys that are his teeth, you know, like Kevin huerter guys that are young like that. I think it's harder for him to delegate and that can also work to impair her because she's not getting as much time on the ball to develop as you might need, So I think it's kind of a challenge. I think you can definitely build a very effective offense around straight and he's already one of the best offensive players in the league. Oh know if you can pick out really any office symmetric that you want you stop sending that metric so and that's crazy, you know for a second year player to already be that effective. So I definitely think you can build an offense. It's all in on him just have students around him have the necessary bigs that you need to execute a pick-and-roll. It's going to help but I do think to win it. Like the highest level is like I do agree that It ultimately comes down to having more talent and Thursday. Will necessarily entail like delegating, you know, allowing other players have time with the ball things like that. So yeah, I think it always comes down to the recruiting types of players that he's willing to share with if that makes sense. Yeah. No that totally makes sense. So unless you had anything else to add I'm ready to move into the offseason. Now, I completely agree with Andrew when you have you know, Talent Thursday, we're close to trade, offensively on that team. No other you know, reliable source of offense outside of maybe Kevin huerter heliocentric is kind of what you have to do, you know, if you don't do that, they probably would have lost even more games. Maybe it would help develop a few guys little quicker, but I don't know if they're in the business of that which you know, kind of brings us into the offseason where the rumors are there gun. They're looking to acquire like wind down players not win now is in like super old veteran one now, but they're ready to spend they want to speed up this rebuilding process cuz I'd listen they just about four years. Teams in a league that have a ridiculous amount of money to spend they're all in the East off course Atlanta Detroit Charlotte and the Knicks I believe. Yeah. In fact, I think Atlanta's two biggest needs are probably secondary Creator. I just another ball head of the sorts of to me is reliable. There has to be a bench and I think they need shooting. They fouled shooting suit. They were dead last in 3-point percentage last season at 33% outside. Tray heard of John Collins. The shooting is super streaking inconsistent with reddish gets hot. He was there too. But everything else was just walk, you know, including Trey and heard they were both shrieking Shooters as well, you know, and I think a reliable another ball-handler and more shooting is there probably the biggest needs. So before I let you speak and I wanted some that. I'm really excited about with Atlanta just because I enjoy like the little cap minutiae things that are fun. I mean with only fifty nine million dollars locked up in this next year, which is crazy Dimension dead. But I think the Hawks I don't want to say that they're going to completely set the tone for free agency. But you look at you know oftentimes in free agency. You'll have one guy. So I think like this year wage..

"We have to say? He's an offensive Superstar like this kid's a top three top five offensive talent in the league and his defense like you mentioned a lot of time. I know you mentioned black guy like Kemba Walker who was also small like him, but he tries, you know what it makes a difference. He's out there taking charges of times and it does make a difference. Whereas he got a crayon doesn't try paging the same time, you know, you gotta give them better for the job because I mean look what they've been surrounding trade with like it's all like they're giving him defensive Stoppers all over the court. So, you know, let's see sure. He's a leader and him trying to be you know, pump up the rest of the team and you know, kind of get them get their juices flowing, but he I don't know he can't try especially on that team that he was last year and he tries on defense. I mean listen they had a dog 111 offensive rating mature on on the court when he was off. That's a hundred. He can't try on defense cuz when he's on the court that offensive ratings and dip like he just doesn't have the energy for that. Cuz last season was all they had to create any sort of reliable off and so, you know, I think I hate giving him excuses. But you know, I'm I've been giving him excuses all season for defense that I at this point in his career. I just took care of them is a terrible Defender to be honest. I blame the gods of heliocentrism. Really quickly back to what you said about Millsaps. He's somewhere that he's like my one of my favorite Atlanta Hawks Everest. So that definitely touch base is near and dear to my heart. I think he still lives in Atlanta. I could be wrong about that. But I believe he does he was definitely someone I would have been too interested in but the like his playing the in the bubble does. Yeah, I really age. Yeah, I could drop off like that does worry me? I'm I'm not going to hold that entirely against them It's just tough for an older player. I think to have to deal with that lay off, but that that would kind of consider me their butt off back to Trey. I think it's really just about moving from like arguably the worst offender in the league to like the bottom ten percent, you know, you know from like 0% I also like 10% off or somewhere around there. Like there's you know degrees of difference and Badness and I do think if you actually look at his break down defensively throughout the year if you look from January like the starting job January all he had the same defensive tipm his name lowered and I'm not saying that he's like the same caliber, you know, he's he's not as good defensively insert as they not the Danes good but he does not have Ruben bro. So I think like the Kemba Walker kind of compare. Like I think that is sort of the model that you want..

"I do know the Hawks are very high on him and they have always been high on his talents going back to high school. So I think that he's someone that will be a huge part of their calculus Hunter. He's older. He did have quite the rookie season, I think somewhere expecting but he's still profiles as a guy that can be really useful in a playoff. So you're just having a guy that's like six foot seven with his, you know, his drink that you can throw out in a multitude of mine. I'm sleepy go and handle different positions and not be a liability of either in the forward like that's really valuable. So I don't know like how it would how the hierarchy will shake out right now off. But I just think that big picture like the idea of just continue to invest in Wings is the right idea. You know, I think that they'll you could see them do that again in the draft this year, you know, like I mentioned a call tomorrow, I think someone like that will be someone that give you interested in a draft Denny guys like that. They might consider just continue to try and increase their chances of the big hit off. Yeah. Definitely. I agree like I think part of it is just because I I'm really really high on cam reddish. I followed him a ton this season. I did like a small profile on him as well close to the trade deadline. I can't remember it was somewhere around there, but I think it's interesting because Hunter is like he's a really nice softball Defender. I think he's a little bit better guarding out than it is regarding threes and part of that was a rookie this year. But also, I mean people were upset because he was a three-year player in Virginia played against High Talent, so you'd expect him to come in and maybe be a little bit better, but I think again you can mention maybe it was overdrafted off. Because you know you not really the guy that you'd think you trade up for but he's still really quality players. I think not to subtract anything from him, but I just think cam has so much upside. I mean, he shows the ability that has the length. He has the wingspan to be like a borderline Elite point-of-attack Defender and if you can continue to work on his softball stuff, I think that will really help and just the stuff that he saw a show in terms of his ability as a shooter. I mean his shooting percentage is literally climbed like it felt like I think it was close to like 8% each month until it got to the final month of the Season like he shot like, you know, took his first his first month and then he was vulnerable was terrible the double spin moves and the double never outlive those. Yeah, I agree with the point of reddish having probably the most up site of these three and not probably he definitely does he's got like ridiculous shooting potential which is weird cuz in high school, he was like that was dead. What he was known for going to do, yeah teamed up with RJ and then there's like this guy's just you know, like sell shooter and then I do he couldn't shoot for shit. I think he shot like 13% or so. They actually run plays in Atlanta. So, there's there's that yeah, that's that's true. That's true. But did you just you don't think ever heard or would be the lock a log of? All right. Here's my thing. I like Kevin huerter. I still want to see him. I know he has a little box has gotten in the league and he's the best shooter the three..

"Coming up this week on Chelsea miked up. We dangerously straddle the line between being super excited fans. An cautious journalists also John Collins from the NBA Atlanta Hawks a huge Chelsea Fan. We get to know him on this week's episode. Enjoy it. It's a good one. Swag. Team, Verner, that's only. Team verner. I'm team over and. There's only one team over. How to do it to them Chris I'm very excited about this now. Let's get all of this out there in front. We are the official Chelsea. podcast with that comes incredible access I mean. We slept at safer, Bridge for heaven's sake. Yes, we get great guest Christian Pulisic reached James. Billy Gilmour pedder check list goes on and on of amazing, Chelsea. Guess, that's the good here's. Just GonNa keep it real with the audience. We can't say with one hundred percents certainty. This is a done deal because we are bound to. Our partnership and Chelsea haven't put out any news stories confirming this I keep checking the fifth sand up I. Don't see it on there, so there's no, there's no club statement. We can only trust credible reporters, Chris Wittingham so. Floor is yours too I mean if they're not educated on what's going on with team Oh verner by now. You've come to the right place. Because Chris is going to catch you up real quick, and then I will flail wildly in exuberance over this potential signing as first reported by the Daily Telegraph. Since confirmed by the athletic, The Guardian, the BBC among many other outlets Chelsea a reportedly agreed on a deal with Red Bull Leipzig on the release clause for team. Oh verner, the striker and second top. Top Scorer in the Bundesliga. They're reportedly paying a release clause of around fifty three million pounds to get this player. This release clause actually renegotiate I. Learn this because he was due to go to Byron Munich actually told all his teammates at Leipzig going to buy Helix, said goodbye, the whole thing and when Byron decided they're going to go for other players. They renegotiated the contract and inserted. Inserted this very low relative to his quality release clause of fifty three million pounds, sixty million euros, and so it was long thought that Liverpool was team Oh. Verners desired destination Liverpool have decided that they're not going to be spending any money in this transfer window, so Chelsea led by Frank Lampard Antonio Ruediger Marina Greenwich Have Convinced Him Earner that Chelsea. It's a club for him. They're prepared to. To pay the full release clauses opposed to anything less than that, and so in all likelihood, according to media reports team Oh verner off to Chelsea and Chris as you mentioned his goal. Scoring record in the Bundesliga is outstanding. In fact, no Bundesliga player has been responsible for more goals assists angles, then team over now. Part of that might be because Erling Haaland got a little bit later. Also, drink yet to those fans set. But he Mo. Verner is obviously a phenomenal player. And he is versatile. And when you're starting to look at the name Chelsea linked to which we'll get to that in the second, the names that they are starting to get healthy on this. Rosser likes of Zeke Pulisic. Who's versatile now you have team verner. Who can play on the left? WHO's a converted winger up top? You have options now up top Tammy Abraham get some challenge. There's a potential return to strikers up top Griz. which as you know has me very excited versatility youth. An attacking side that is potent, and is as formidable as some of the teams that occupy the top two slots presently in the premier, League Chris Wittingham. You're right in that position. Versatility is a massive part of this because team Verner is ace striker..

"If they ran a pick and roll at the four they would hedge pretty hard with the four baby. You do that and then you say. Hey if you get the four on three at least you got cappella back there to clean up the mess a little bit. Maybe that's your philosophy and then you say You know you've got to potential RIM PROTECTORS. You can get every single defensive rebound you can be huge on the offensive glass on the other end and you know maybe it's something that could cause teams to promise socially in the Eastern Conference but then you're like okay. What do you do when you go up against the Celtics and Jason? Tatum is the four Junk College is GonNa Guard like Gordon Hayward or something or you go up against Pascal Siaka. Who's probably GONNA be too big for the whoever you have at the three You know maybe hunter can develop. And that's the other problem too. Is Hunter really a three? If you're really you know or maybe he's just not going to be a key part of it you know. Maybe that's what it's going to be but Because it does seem like that. It seems like they've kind of with this cappella move now. Hunter has kind of shoehorned into play in the three. They've certainly created some more questions about that by adding a center that they're clearly invested in for you know multiple years and who's obviously a good player. Hunter I mean on the bright side you can say pretty much. All of their pieces. Other than trae young Capella or multi. Position guys who can shift around and be a little bit versatile on the other side if you if you think the owner is more of a four and that is the jury is certainly out on that but if he becomes the guy that you like the four you're kind of in a bind because yes you skill level is high enough to be the three. That's the big question. I think His second year will be huge to to evaluate. He's a guy who I know. He's an older rookie but There's also something to be said for the fact that he's going from Virginia to the NBA is kind of a joke that people underrate how different it is playing that. Very Virginia style basketball They were especially even defensively. Like I don't know. Hundred is a guy who is interesting in a number of ways but even if you don't love him at the three other lineups that you know their best lineup this season which is kind of ironic was all five young guys playing together. That was the lab that I I mean. It's a small sample but that lineup is actually very effective. With Hunter at the Foreign Collins at the five It is still a small sample size. But if you look at their lineup data that was by far their best lineup this season. So there's something to be said for that too but then you also just invested in Capella. So I guess if you want to be missed it you could. You could talk yourself into a scenario in a playoff series where you're playing forty eight minutes with either. Capelle Collins at center you stagger those guys you have hundred play some four. You can sort of see how might come together but at the same time if you think hunter is a four A. does get a little bit dicey as to either. He's not part of your core or you know it just kind of you. Maybe you're shoehorning him in like you said to the three and obviously they paid so much for him. That having that be the result would not be the greatest. Look in the world if he's if he's sort of a bit player for you all right. If a ten defensively is Andrea woodall or something you know like the best wing defender and you know a five is just your average guy who's not going to get totally steamrolled on the wing out on a ten point scale. Where is his defense at right now? Is He really like anywhere? Close to being the lockdown guy that being drafted number four overall would indicate no. He's not based on his rookie season. I think you know the the the physical measurable that you would WanNa see. You know. He's six eight with the seven to wingspan. He's strong. He's currently better on the ball off the ball which was which was also the case in college. I'm not ready to give up on him as a high level. You know eight or nine on that scale eventually. That's in play. I would not bank on that anymore. But he certainly not there yet. He's somewhere in the middle like he's passable. Thought he was on defense this year. Probably better than your average rookie on defense. But that's not going to move the needle for you and in fact I thought Red Reddish was pretty clearly better than hunter defensively this season and Reddish was actually You know I almost as bright spot earlier when I talked. Whenever I talk about Collins Russia's defense I was high on it coming in to college coming into the NBA out of college but he was very good defensively. This season Both I would say for a rookie. He was good early and then just objectively in the second half he was just. I thought he was above average wing defender by the end of the year And that's you know still we'll see. It's one year of sample size but It is kind of. It's both telling on hunter and also telling Reddish that reddish is better than hunter. Right now defensively. Because it's not really a shot at hunter. It's more of an endorsement of Reddish but I think the Hawks would probably agree with me on this. By by the end of the year especially on smaller wings Reddish was the better option. You could convince me that hunter against a guy like Lebron or collide. That's those big physical guys that he was drafted to defend. Maybe he's still better. But against like your your average you know shooting guard size player. I would have rather had reddish this year which is which I think is pretty interesting. Yeah now that that is fascinating Yeah I mean I think maybe you can say if hunter you know you just you don't want to get caught up now. I mean he's on the team can't cry over spilled milk drafted number four. But if you're thinking about what role he can play you know. Maybe he does come in off the against a lot of teams but then if you gotta go up against Lebron or Kawhi or Pasquale Siaka. Maybe you say all right. We'RE GONNA. He's got the size will throw them in there. He can just not get totally overwhelmed physically. But if we don't have that type of matchup than maybe. His ROLE GETS MINIMIZED. Because as you mentioned the. Oh He's a limited a as off ball guy as art. Let's let's put through some of the rest of these questions here. We've got a lot of tangent so Biggest disappointment to you the season. It's interesting I think. The answer is just the overall roster conjunction which we talked about before just the way that it was so foreseeable Collins suspension would be on the list because I'm not sure they would have really contended for the eighth spot but as soon as that happened it was over because they were they were so utterly ghastly during that time that he missed And it might have happened to an certain extent anyway but they just could not afford that which is even more right because they signed Jabari Parker a part to give them depth at the four nate netting. Gobert well I gotta be honest with you I will say other than that. You know substance disappointment about the guys like Parker and Evan Turner and Damian Jones and Bruno Fernando. But that's kind of what sunk them so or Allen crab too I mean like I thought at least crab he even and even when he was healthy just like couldn't make a shot. I mean it was like for for Vince Carter to be as bad as he wasn't. Yeah I think that was kind of an under appreciated story that the rest of these vats were just so bad I mean one of them could have given them something. I was going to say I think it would have been you know. It's it's a disappointment but having every single one of those additions or veterans be bad is kind of remarkable that none of them were even okay. I'm the only guy that you could say that was not. I'm not a part of the core. That actually played decently was Alex Len. They traded him And I understand why But he was the only guy that I would save outside of their core pieces that actually played reasonably well this season every other guy they either acquired or sign or whatever they had to do to get those guys there none of them worked out which is kind of amazing team MVP. That's obvious. It's Rayon yes I agree I think if you WANNA get really weird and say if college doesn't get to spend it you could have argued for him to be kind of close but still Rotation player who struggled the most who it was definitely Cam Reddish until the end of December cameras was very bad. Offensively like to the point where. He was a punchline nationally. How bad he was for the first couple of months of the season But aside from that I am from that point. Four there isn't like a clear answer I don't know take your pick of Allan crabb Carter Evan Turner and Damian Jones. Any of those guys I was GONNA say Damian. This is what I will lead to earlier. David Jones is probably the right answer because he played the most of these guys and he was so damaging. I mean I don't want to pile on. But the numbers with him on versus off are telling they were just they could not defend at all with damage on the court and I felt bad about that but he's probably the right answer for this yet. Negative fourteen net rating Eight point three points per one hundred possessions worse within the floor that was actually starting a a reasonable number against this weird thing where they weren't starting Alex Len for some reason and they start Damian Jones instead which I I agree so anywhere else We talked about the young players. But give me A. Let's just run through them all really quickly Give a letter grade for development for all the teams Young Star Trail. A maybe a plus. It's one of those two based on what he did from your one year too. I mean you could. You could quibble with the with the defense. That's the big question and I think if you WANNA BE FAVORABLE. He was slightly better. Defensively in your to. Then you're one. He's still very bad but I'll still say because he was the jump and he may was just ludicrous. So the Andre Hunter see I would say I think he's. He's gotten a little bit a little bit more heat than I would have given him. Because I think I just kind of saw this coming more than most people dude got like. I said before the shy being top five pick was Going to play into how he was going to be evaluated objectively. He was about what I thought he was going to be as a rookie. Maybe a little bit were so I'll say I'll say I see. Yeah I think you and I were just coming out for lower expectations am but do you think he got visibly better. The season went along. I do I think it wasn't. It wasn't in the way that reddish did like it was so noticeable but just the little things I think hunters. Awful defense improved. I think more comfortable just letting it fly offensively as a shooter as the season went along and he had some notable games. I think there's one in my mind where he was. He was asked to guard. James Harden Early in the season and got absolutely decimated and then the second time he actually was competitive and I thought it's just a one off but that's in my head for some reason as evidence that he was better but I I think he was. It wasn't just this massive jump but you could see the sons Kevin hurt I will say C. Plus I think he stalled a little bit from year one to year to the same things that he needs to work on from your one he still needs to work on which is not what you want Just getting getting to the line getting to the rim finishing effectively. I think people don't wash the hawks think of Kevin Herder as like this calc over type just pure shooter and he I mean he is. He's a good shooter but he has a lot more to his game than that on. Ideally in the hawks believe in it but he's got to be more confident more sort of just physically stronger to in the future to get to the rim defensively. He was probably a little bit better but still got. You can probably attack. He's terrible terrible but he he has to get stronger and he didn't really do that from your one year two ends. He's a tough fit with the La- trae defensively Of course cameras. I'm guessing you'll probably be pretty high on him. Given where he started the year and where he ended it. Yeah I would probably say like be plus. I mean the difference between between October and February for came radishes astronomical and part of that he was so bad early and it's worth pointing out that reddish basically missed the whole summer because he had this core muscle injury that he suffered during the predrag process. And that's going back a lot. I think that was notable western and that was a. I think. Actually my recollection. Was there saying that that affected him even going back to do? Yeah they said they said that I mean there's there's different schools of fallen how much that affected him in college because there was sort of re injury during the process and he kinda got shut down but even regardless even if it was just the just the summer him missing the summer he got this and then they throw in the deep end and I get why because of what we said before the rotation options were not plentiful but the fact that he was playing. You Know Twenty eight minutes a game out of the gate and was just clearly not ready to do that..

"Could even end up being more even more than that the other who does I mean? There's there's a lot of money you're on the League. You couldn't theory get a good deal on something like that. But of course there's the issue that a lot of these guys are in their late twenties already. If not even later on that right you have the combination of the guys who you might look at or a little bit older and also you know they're just not that many quality options right now you know. Obviously if you take a D. and Brandon Ingram off the table which is probably reasonable given those situations. There probably isn't another guy. I mean you could look at maybe Bogdonovich but do they match do the Kings match reasonable deal. I would imagine they probably do I don't know my favorite guy that I always talk about as the most logical option for me at a reasonable price is probably the guy much before which is Joe Harris. But do you want to give Joe Harris four years and sixty seventy million dollars. That sounds like a lot for Joe. Harris he's not that young either and I liked Joe Harris quite about that. You helped him and they need shooting in a desperate way but by the way for those who forgot this is the worst three point shooting team in the NBA at around thirty three percent. And if you take out trae young and the also consider how often trae young is setting guys up for open threes. You know. That's the team percentage probably like thirty two percent. I mean. That's just just atrocious. Obviously yeah if you want to be optimistic you could point out the fact that the guys who actually matter the core pieces shot much better than the guys who didn't matter the guy who won't be back. That's the one sort of if you want to try to find the rainbow in there is the fact that her and hunter and Collins. Those guys actually shot decently well but else on the roster was just brutal and they have to find more shooting which is another reason why I bring up a guy like Harris or gallic. Data's baton someone like that who who could fill that role but batons is not a great fit on this roster for instance with Collins already on the team and hunter may be playing some four so the short answer to your question about four year. Real contract is probably know which is not not what you want to see for a team. That has a lot of space. Yeah but you also questioned with everybody's shooting for the summer of twenty twenty one. Are They GonNa do any better at that point But I mean I don I would think about it like. He's a little bit better than expected. Defensively ethic for for a Lotta people and he would give them a little bit more driving passing decision making than someone like hurt her and I might actually consider that especially because the position that they're in. It's okay to wait on a restricted free agent. And Yeah they probably would end up getting matched but it's not the end of the world where they are as a team if they don't get so one necessarily Evan Forty is that when you might consider I thought about I thought about bringing him up. I mean it wouldn't be the thing in the world I'd rather have mcdonagh Mitch out of those two guys Just for where they are And I wouldn't be super opposed to either of them. I I do think that if you want to have any chance of the kings not matching on Bogdonovich. You probably have to pay a number that I wouldn't love to pay. That's kind of thinking but there's not a huge opportunity cost for them. Either right at this point. I mean they're not I. It's it's basically because I think what you really have to compare it to is paying him. Twenty million or anyone else that you're GonNa pay twenty million to free agency as well so it he actually does start to look more palatable by comparison at that point Georgia Georgia native contiguous caldwell-pope. I wouldn't be opposed. I've always Kinda liked him. I know you like him I think he would make some sense on this roster especially defensively. He would help them I don't know what the market is for. Kcpt that's one of those guys. I have no idea what he's going to get the summer. I really don't But if it's a reasonable number sure he he actually makes sense to me Yeah and then there's also just gave more at backup point guard as well. I also thought Jordan Clarkson might actually be a reasonable fit for this team just because they need one more guy who can create a shot off the bench and anybody could play a little bit. I mean he's going to help the defense but Again there's not a ton of people available on this On this free agent market this year it is not a Fr- it's not a fun for agent class when you're looking ahead at a team that is still rebuilding and has seven million dollars in cap space. You look at the list and no one. Gets you overwhelmingly excited? I probably get a question per day about free agency and I just kind of look at it and say Unless you think Brandon Ingram gettable. I don't I don't get it and he's not by the way Yeah I wouldn't give her excited Olga Grushin but that's that's an important question for this team going forward What is long biggest long-term need for this team? We've hit on it a little bit already. But if you're going to consider that Collins and Cappella and trae young are gonNA stick around. What's the biggest thing that they need? I think they need honestly. They probably need a legitimate number two creator that they don't have right. Now we're talking about contention at the highest levels. They they need someone that's not. It's not curly on the roster. In my opinion I guess it's possible that Reddish makes that kind of job. I don't really see it. I do think collinses an awesome offensive player. And that you know he's kind of he's clue operating number two right now and did a really good job at this season. But let's see has more room to grow and I think he probably does to an extent as a creator type not like going to be your primary but someone who can do a little bit more off the Gerbil some soup. Dhl stuff. We'll see what he can do But I think ultimately you're looking probably a little bit higher when it comes to another maybe not primary but a legitimate secondary creator. They can run your offense or at least have your pursuit of your focal point when trey leaves the court In the draft. That's what I assume that they were looking for if they get lucky in this class Spoiler alert this class has not very good so not not not a great time to be looking at that but You know in addition to shooting which is a clear need and just defensive talent because you have to kind of boxing treong there. Isn't this one glaring me that that's the one positive if you WANNA take approach this team is that if if it all works out which it never does for any of these rebuilding teams you. I mean just to be honest you know I mean that's a great point to make it that I think a lot of people are like. Oh Yeah we got this guy and this guy and this guy and this guy and it's like well you got to be realistic. You know half of these players on average are just not going to be anything more than back. That's what's happening now. Honestly and that's a lot of the discussions that I have with fans and people that I think are smart fans but they start doing the starting lineup game with this team and you know it always involves all of young all of young players. And it's I just tried to caution people that you know one or two of these guys are probably not going to work out in the way that you want them to or they're gonNA get traded or they're gonna get consolidated or something like that so they don't have a glaring need at the same time they probably are going to have to improve somewhere whether it be you know one of the wing spots is probably the most glaring spot that they could do that as that assumes of course that Collins a Cappella ends up working. 'cause that doesn't work you're looking at a trade probably of one of the two and then you have another issue altogether. So there's a lot of uncertainty honestly with this roster despite having all this young talent troy young the only guy that I you absolutely right. It in Penn two years from now to be on this team and that kind of it's kind of scary but it's also intriguing because they do have on these assets biggest positive surprise you the season. I assume it would be trae young Sir development but is what would be your number two. Yeah that's certainly number one I think I think honestly it would have to be John Collins Development There's not an obvious number two here so this is just me picking something else. That's legitimate positive. Surprise Collins took real steps defensively. He still not perfect on it all night on the floor but it was thought markedly better this season than he had been previously. Which gives you some hope for him and then if you just honestly I try not to do too much of this. But you look at his numbers and his efficiency. It's really kind of staggering. What he was able to do offensively And how much of that is believable? Or how much about is winning basketball is up for interpretation but this is a guy who essentially averaged twenty and ten on sixty plus percent true shooting and is one of the best present. Sixty five percents. Yeah so that's like a pretty high usage for a big a wall twenty three percent usage. So that's no. He definitely is a positive offense apart. Reserve big difference between his performance at center and powerpoint offensively A little bit but at the same time I think it's almost almost. WanNa throw it out with him. Play next next center because the centers that he was playing with Other than some Alex. Len minutes were really just shaky. I'll say that to be kind. Like playing a lot of mets with Damian Jones or a lot of minutes with Brunner. Fernando is not gonNa tell you much as you enjoy Jimmy Damian Jones Ha I had him on my notes to bring up if you ask me questions. But no Damian Damian Damian was an adventure I like. I think he's a very nice kid. And that's what's kind of rough about having to kill them all the time and honestly I will be. I'll be favorable. I think Damian is actually an NBA caliber. Roll man offensively. But everything else is not is not there for Damian but Yeah I think the one big development to go along with just the just. The raw efficiency that calls able to post was that I actually do believe in his jumper at this point. I think it looks good. The results were good. I'm not sure it's GONNA be forty percent from three like you. Was this season. But I'm pretty sold on him being a high thirty three point shooter. And if that continues to be the case that's a real development and of gives you more optimism about him playing the four. I've been on record for a long time that I think he probably is best suited at the five but the way that they're developing him. There's at least more reason now than I would have had a year ago to think that he actually can work as a four long-term on both ends of the floor. The big question for me is his defensively. CaN'T HE GUARD FORCE. Can you defend fours? Is the real question but he develop as an as an awful rip protector or weakside guy was better at that role on struggles. Still in like primary actions defensively but he really took a big jump. The suspension really clouded. A lot of things both team-building wise and results wise. And I guess you know I'm not reporting this but it could have soured. I mean I'm not sure I'm sure they were. Not Happy with Sean Collins getting suspended so that kind of a wrench and things but just simply on the court once he came back I thought he was very good and that was a big positive for them. Yeah you could see it. Maybe it'll be interesting experiment with him and Cappella defensely. I'm not sure that it can't work. I think yeah he. He's going to struggle. If you're he's got a guard. So when are you going to switch? You'RE GONNA play a conventional pickerel deep for you. Not Allow teams do that anymore. Maybe what you say is that you have a more aggressive style. A lot of teams used to do that. You know like the Pacers backrooms David West and Roy Hibbert..

"Don't be up that /capspace your else. Let them know that you came from us. I'd Sunday night edition of the pod. Continue our I guess we could call it season wrapup series but it's It's cooler than that Certainly but We got the best guy to talk about the Atlanta Hawks. A fascinating team this season. And I also think going for we're GONNA hit on all of those aspects of the Hawks Brad role how you doing. I'm hanging in there. As you said it's been sort of a fascinating season Both for good. And for ill for this hawks team so a lot to dig into appreciate you having me man. Oh Yeah of course always good to get into it with you a on the hawks. Oh where I wanted to start with this team as we look back on it they were. GonNa get in front of me here. Twenty and forty seven at the beginning of the hiatus would your grade B for this Atlanta Hawks season. Compared to your expectations I will. I will say for a bad team. This is actually harder than I thought it was going to be too great it and I hadn't thought about this I land somewhere around C. minus range because on one hand the stuff that actually matters for the future like the young guys and especially trae young that was not a bad necessarily outcome overall. But on the other hand the team sal the underperformed their vegas over under and some of the baselines that you would look at and the roster building was. Kinda strange so I think it has to be a below average mark but I also. I'm sort of conflicted because I guess the most important thing on the rosters trio making a leap so that kind of brings it up a little bit. I'll still land slightly negative though around minus range. Yeah I think that makes sense right because you're I mean. Trey really came on John. Collins got suspended for twenty five games. That's that's probably going to hurt your grade a little bit. But I thought that he played about his was you could hope to once he actually was available again. Cam Reddish had a terrible start to the year. But I don't think anyone's expecting him to be great and he showed some signs. We'll talk about that The Andre Hundred. Maybe a little disappointing especially considering that They traded up to get him and he he was really supposed to be a part of this future out if he showed that. And then obviously the compared to expectations. My expectations were that they're going to have big time problems at backup center and backup point guard and with these rookie wings and that all happened. So they really. I guess what I would say is I would give trae young. And A and like the rest of the team a D. minus but trae young is the most important thing about the future. See I think C. minus makes sense to me. That's about right. I mean there are some positives and Trae by far the biggest positive but and I also agree that you know the expectations. I would say it kind of depends on what you thought of the team coming into the year I think some of the outside factors were a little bit higher but even even the teams internal expectations were more modest than the vegas over under. Was traveling spin on the record. Multiple Times saying the heat He and the analytics team had about thirty win projection. Hey Look I knew just how damaging it was going to beat to not have a backup point guard. Were well aware coming in. Our expectations are much lower. I'm with you one hundred percent on this. We realized this preseason to we. We both talked about how we're the supporting cast was and that's GonNa come up again. I'm sure on this podcast but Yeah it's sort of mixed bag all the way around. So let's talk about trae young and would you say that he. I mean when we talk before the season we talked about him potentially leading the NBA and assist which Shaikh leadoff given. How good he was did not happen. I mean it shouldn't shock but It was that we were hired him and in that way we thought he'd be good but he didn't. Those wanted it didn't turn out. But what was it about? His Performance. This year that enabled him to go to the next level. And be an all-star starter. We were so far off with trae. He that he finished second 'cause liberal Lebron actually had the highest rate of his career which is coming but The going back to Trae I think the biggest jump that he made and it was a jump over all to be sure the passing was kind of already there but just being able to maintain what was essentially a league efficiency. He fell off a little bit down the stretch but even still essentially average thirty points and nine assists with about fifty nine sixty percent true shooting and that is just kind of speaks for itself. I know I know there are issues with him. Defensively and the team was so heavily based around him but there are not a lot of guys who could carry the usage rate in the low that he carried and still maintain that level efficiency in addition to an elite level. Passer so I think all offensively he basically made the biggest joke that you could possibly foreseen and I think even internally I have a hard time believing that they saw this coming year too because if they did they probably would have built a little bit more feverishly to win now so you know just the fact that he was able to shoot the ball more consistently and better to the line so often and kind of be that. Um that BS fouls rubber draw. You talked about a lot on the podcast. But he's just sort of this offensive engine that I think he was billed to be when they drafted him eventually. Year to being this good Almenda. The floor is something they just couldn't have seen coming to have thirty five percent usage. Which is a massive number of Michael Jordan? Kobe Bryant ask number and we are in this situation now where stars able to ramp up their usage perhaps more than ever before with the amount of spacing that we have but to have that kind of usage and then also forty five percent free throw rate for a guy who's not exactly like a power driver getting to the line and finishing over people and that's That's very impressive. It does make you wonder if they ever got into a playoff setting of teams are really locked in on not following him kind of James Harden likely would his vision. See go down. But that's That's not a concern as of right now for this hawks team and the only thing that really sticks out that he needs improve is the turnovers and perhaps if they get a little bit more ron him where he doesn't have to create everything he can get a little bit more efficient in that area so yeah he was fantastic Would you say other than the fact that Trae Young Is really you know moving into where being close to an all? Nba Level a player. Would you say are the biggest things that this team learned this year? I think that's the most important one. But even beyond that and we sort of alluded to it earlier. I think I would hope that they learn the importance of having Mba Quality. Players up and down the roster. Not even really I mean it's it's funny but the fact that this was so foreseeable that they were gonNA be. And it's not just trays on off numbers. But Trade. Off Number so glaring. There was nothing behind him for most of the season. But I think for like two start an era but like two three months into the season. They've got like a ninety two offensive rating when he's off the floors of Atlantic up a little better when t got there but it was It was ugly. It really was and it was so foreseeable. I mean I think people that up down the whether you were in Atlanta or not paying attention closely to the roster. It was just something that was upset projectable. That would happen so I'm hoping that the front office figure that out as well and I think this is sort of the same thing but they also diagnosed pretty clearly during season at center was going to be a problem for them. And they were linked Andre Drummond for however long that ended up happening in the ended up swinging the trade for Clint Cappella And you know in. In the meantime they sent out the only guy that actually was playing competent minutes limits. Senator and Alex Len but he's going to be free agent to and wasn't necessarily starting center moving forward if he knew that so. I I think just the importance of death. I think they probably also knew that giving so many minutes to the rookies early was going to not be a good thing on the court of it probably sort of towing that line of the importance of the future and investing in these players versus actually winning now and I think they did know deep down. This was not going to be a great roster this season but they also just made it so tough to evaluate certain players by just basically putting a couple of positions entirely backup point guard especially and even the supporting veterans. They had elsewhere. You Know You. Allen Crabs and your. Vince Carter's was actually. This was still playing at age. Forty two forty three and not playing very well etc. They just kind of had so many holes that it makes it difficult to evaluate their own players. And it's also a pretty clear nation as as to why they struggled so much. Yeah and definitely. I was critical. That and I think some people might be like well. Hey you know in your philosophy that it's just useless to chase the eighth seed like. Why does this really matter after all? They weren't going to do anything if they're in the playoffs. The seed was artificially bad this year even for the Eastern Conference if it was even remotely competent to get there even if they fill those wholesome they're not getting their of so. I understand that thought but it was just. There's no reason not to do it. You know they're citing Jabari Parker for six million dollars for no reason right like there's and just even get a semi competent backup or especially at center where you've got plenty of options available Ain't though to destroy it and just like you're seeing that the way they were losing gained started to wear on trae young it may have started to wear according to reports on the relationship between trae young and Lloyd Pierce and so it's not like especially with the new draft format. It's not like they're going to get some awesome pick anyway this year And so you might. As well have filled those holes I think ultimately especially because they made a bunch of other moves. That were kind of like. Oh they are actually trying to get better. But then others weren't really consistent with that and that seems like that's very traffic light to me right like it's really hard for me to figure out what he what his philosophy is like. He'll make a lot of moves where he's just taking And trying to build up the asset base but then he makes a move like throwing all the chips in for de'andre honor so I i. It's really hard. He's a very inconsistent. Gm When you look at evaluating his move. I totally agree and you know there are some of them. That are very clear as to what you're doing like for instance last summer they take on Allen Crab and get basically two first round picks they sent her in Princeton Brooklyn. That was a move that was clearly future facing and I thought it was a pretty good value decision. They didn't love what Prince was going to give them long term. They didn't WANNA pay him and ended up with two first round picks. And that's actually a good use of resources but then you turn around and buy even even someone who likes down one hundred like do. You've pretty clearly overpay in that trade even even in the moment For a guy who's going to be a role player for you. It's just a lot of pluses and minuses. That Jabari Parker thing. Baffled me as well I would have talk about that too much but it was very clear very quickly. They didn't make a lot of sense and they plan on it only a few months time. It's just it it is kind of mixed signals that they put forth and I do find myself kind of picturing how bad things would have been this year for the Hawks have trae young. Didn't make the leap mate because they were already pretty bad And it concerned that no one projected that if he had just been marginally better than your one still been a good still been a good useful future facing player for the tea but not necessarily this breakout star. It would be even more vexing in some ways because at least now they know and they can sort of bank on and claim having this number one offensive engine that they're very confident and because they've already seen this happen they didn't have that it would be even more confusing to me so anything else that pops out to you. The team learned about adult this year. I mean it's it's interesting. I think they learned a some stuff about the young guys. But we'll probably get into later. It was kind of stagnant. But it was about what you would expect. Maybe a little bit below what you would expect for Gaza. Kevin hurter indie Andrei Hunter. I don't think it's panic. Time for either one of those guys but not necessarily a huge jump for her from year one year. Two Hunter as an older rookie. I think people thought he might be a little bit better than he was. And I saw this coming a mile away when he was when when a trade happened. But you you compare what they traded for him and the fact that you have this top five sheen of being this high draft. Pick people start to think that you're going to be better than you're going to be. That's not his fault but I thought he was just okay. He wasn't terrible but he wasn't great. Either they just you know they learned about John Collins. That's something that I wanted to point out to..

"A generous giving soul I'm giving you not one but two phenomenal interviews in one action packed episode here. Yes. A double feature on the full forty eight. We have Lloyd Pierce the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. I sit down with him followed by my lawyer waited re or the long awaited return of Adam silver, the NBA Commissioner to the full forty eight. He wasn't fact the first guest on this podcast when we kicked it off about a year and a half ago, really great to get Adam back on the podcast. We covered a lot of ground in this interview. Obviously at a ton going on in the NBA. And so we this could have gone any number of directions. But I wanted to talk without him. I up about tanking and lottery reform. This is the first year where they have changed. The odds for the lottery has it actually changed the way teams are operating or even the way fans are rooting. For their teams to fail. Adamant. A lot of interesting thoughts on that topic. We also discussed the possibility of marijuana being removed from the NBA's banned list. They still test randomly test players four times a year. That's more than any of the other major North American sports and given the way that society is moving does that really make sense anymore. Again, the Commissioner has some really interesting thoughts on that. And where they are heading with that. And I got an update important update on the age limit and the discussions about removing the age limit when that might happen. And we also touched on the recent comments by or comments attributed to Robert server, the Suns owner about the potential threat to leave Phoenix if they didn't get the public funding that they wanted to renovate their arena. So Adam silver, always very thoughtful interview. And always a really fun discussion. Great conversation. So we will have. That but first is Lloyd Pierce. Of course, it's his rookie season as a head coach in the NBA big challenge with the Atlanta Hawks a team that has obviously rebuilding obviously has gone young a lot invested in trae young. They're they're rookie point guard. And when you listen to Lloyd Pierce, you'll understand exactly why the hawks hired Lloyd incredibly thoughtful. And he has just very grounded has a philosophy knows exactly what he wants to do in terms of establishing a culture with this new team all the lessons that he's brought to bear after his time working in Philadelphia on Brett Brown staff and prior to that couple of other places, including Cleveland, and Memphis, just a wealth of knowledge. And as I say just a really thoughtful approach, I think the hawks are in great hands with Lloyd Pierce, obviously going to be a while before that team can get moving back in the right direction. Get the talent that they need. But they've got a great steady voice at the top of that with Lloyd Pierce. So. There you go to interviews both of them fantastic. Hope these get you through the week next week. We'll be a best of episode featuring interviews with Jeanie Buss Steve Kerr and Andy Bernstein look for that. And as always, please if you like the podcast love the podcast. Maybe even if you still lukewarm on the podcast, that's fine. To subscribe rate us on podcasts. Give us a review semi your feedback.
