NCAA Withheld Use of Powerful 'March Madness' Brand From Women's Basketball

"And finally. It's march and college. Basketball tournaments are in full swing the infamous march madness logo is everywhere but that trademark one of the most powerful brands in sports is only used for the men's tournament in a recent report. The wall street journal found that the national collegiate athletic association had withheld use of the march madness brand from the women's basketball tournament when asked about it the nc double a. I said the women basketball leadership had chosen not to use it but then the ncwa reversed course to say. That was an accurate. This comes on the heels of recent posts that went viral on social media. Depicting different facilities and perks for the women's teams competing in the tournament. Our sports reporter. Louise radnofsky says the. Nc double a. is playing defense where now is also at a much bigger underlying causes of the despair. If the men's tournament has had for years access to one of the most powerful sports brands in the world and the women's tournament not only did not as the ncaa initially suggested decide. It didn't want to be part about brand but it had been excluded from that brand and that people now say they of course want to be part of something that powerful that they believe they deserve to be part of something that powerful and that the ncaa what is reviewing how it proceeds going forward with women's basketball may need to take a much deeper look and a much wider look then simply focusing on weight rooms which are perhaps the most tangible way people experienced it but not necessarily the biggest way they were in fact experiencing it earlier. This week the nc. Aa said it would work with stakeholders to quote determined the best way forward for women's basketball including the use of march madness logos in the future.

They're going to have the opportunity to register for the virtual edition of the race. And the catch is as many of. You may know the boston marathon is usually super exclusive in that you have to run a certain qualifying time or raise a certain amount for charity to get in on the action in my eyes. Honestly i understand why some people who may have done either of those things may feel some kind of way about the fact that you know anyone potentially could register for this virtual event but if you have gustavo and like the determination to run a virtual marathon which in my eyes so much more difficult than showing up for a regular marivan Good for you get out

"Website a message from the Michigan High School Athletic Association promoting the value and values of educational athletics. Our weekly be. The referee feature takes a look into the fine art of officiating with Brett Rice. One of the other visible rules changes taking place this year and football pertains to the quarterback, spiking the ball into the ground after receiving the snap from the center, an attempt to stop the clock. Previously clocking the ball in effort to preserve time could only be done from a traditional hand, a hand snap from the center to the quarterback, which actually worked to the disadvantage of teams which run shotgun formations all the time. The rule change allows for the quarterback from a shotgun formation to immediately spike the ball into the ground after receiving it to stop the clock with an incomplete pass, bringing the high school rule in line with the college and professional rules. Thanks, Brent. You could be a referee got on the MHS say website now to register the closer this week takes us to Cadillac with a story about a former Cadillac high school graduate was maintained her passion for the pitch as a registered official. Bill Spencer called Tom Spencer of the HS a second half that it doesn't take long for coaches, Other officials and players to see that she is capable. Little gets a lot of satisfaction out of the game of soccer and recommends that others get involved in officiating, she said. With College Football's Season at Stake, Who Makes the Call?

"I had their thanks for joining me SORTA. Thanks for having me on today. Heatherton itch covers college football and be potential lack, thereof for ESPN. So I'm so excited to have you because we're watching the college football landscape change day by day, and really as you know well hour by hour at this point. The Patriot. League in the Ivy League announced they won't be playing any sports this fall for instance, but the Big Ten and PAC twelve say they'll have in conference football games only, but the colonial athletic association is doing the opposite. They're saying it. Schools can only pursue independent schedules, and then of course, famously independent Notre. Dame says it's unlikely. The season starts on Pie. So that is a lot. But why are we seeing such a crazy range of approaches to how or even whether to move forward with the season at all hallows? It's a reflection of what we're seeing nationally throughout our country. Schools and universities and campuses in commissioners have to react to the coronavirus pandemic in their particular region. And I think it's very important when you look at the Ivy Leagues Decision, which was the first one why they did what they did. Once, again our top stories breaking news. It's official the Ivy. League will not play any sports in the fall semester including football. And they did it because of their campus cove nineteen policies. meaning that there were restrictions on travel, there were restrictions on group sizes, no more than twenty five to fifty people on some campuses limitations on visitors. All things that when you put them together made it impractical to have fall competition. And then when you look at what the PAC twelve did, which was an extremely important decision, not just to go conference only but to delay the start of the season today, the PAC twelve and now the fall season for several PAC, twelve sports, including football would adjust their schedule. Conference only games they announced. That was a direct reaction to the corona virus bikes in Arizona and southern California from California the first State to issue a stay at home order to Arizona among the first to relax those orders, these western states so breaking new records corona cases almost daily, if the season or practices were starting today and forego USC and Ucla Arizona. Schools wouldn't be able to participate. So that's why it's such a patchwork decision making process right now, because different things are happening in different areas of the country.

"Result. Let's transition over to the college hoops side of things you're off for a few minutes, and let's talk about the colonial Athletic Association. The CA Hofstra leads this conference by three games. It's the biggest lead in either a division or a conference in college basketball. Are they just that much better than the rest of the pack here? Boy, what a shock. I mean. Obsta was the team that won nineteen games. Last year. Did have four starters back. So they had a good team. But you know, looking back like blue ribbon blue ribbon had him fourth in the conference. You know, Charleston was a team that was supposed to be the best team Auster has the longest or second longest. Win streak in the country, sixteen straight games. And you look at offense efficiency, and it is just night and day Hofstra. You know, if you haven't seen Justin right form and play. He's there. He's there shooting guard. He's number three or four and scoring in the country legitimate score. This kid can just play ball. He is a kid. That's put up forty once. He's put up thirty more six times. Popstars offense efficiency is number eighteen in the country. This year northeastern about fifty everyone else in the conference a hundred and twenty or higher. So when you're looking at the offense of side of the ball, again, it is night and day when you look on the defensive side of the ball as far as fish goes Charleston is is the best defensive team. But and Hosters number two. So. To me. Hofstra is just legit. You know, Justin right form and as a kid from Queens, New York, one of those New York kids that isn't afraid to go up against anybody the their schedule the first half of the schedule the colonial plate everybody. So it was a complete round Robin the first half. And then it's a complete round Robin the second half, they went nine to know they swept each of their opponents. So you know, going through the second half. I don't see him getting through the conference and winning the conference outright. Because you have a couple of situations where you know, you were a team that wasn't picked to win it all and you blew through the conference. The everyone knows your three games clear. So now, it's almost like you have that bulls eye on your back. You're now going through the second half at a conference. You're now playing nine straight games. Where teams have revenge. Enj-? You know, they went to William Mary they won by three overtimes. They still have to go to Charleston. They still have to go to northeastern that northeastern games this Saturday, both of those are think potential losses, but the way they're playing the way they have the best offense the second. Best defense number ten in the country ineffective field goal percentage. They do not turn the ball over. They are like in the top twenty in in offense of in offense of turnovers. They have a senior point guard in booey and right form and sometimes does play point guard when he spells them. But for the most parties playing either the shooting guard or the small forward. So, you know, clearly, I think you know, I think costal runs the table. I think they lose one or two I think there'll be a significant favourite in the colonial athletic conference. And then you're next group of teams, northeastern, Delaware and Charleston. You know, both in that five and six win range only those are the only four teams with winning records in the conference. Hofstra course, undefeated northeastern six and three Delaware six and three Charleston five and four. But you mentioned, you know, those four teams right there have played before weakest schedules in in the conference now, obviously when the best four teams usually play the weakest scheduling around robbing because you haven't played the opponents, but the way they played the home and road games. You know, while no one's gonna catch him. I think clearly the next best team is Charleston. They were a team that was there last year. Year won twenty six games return. Three starters has two of the best players in the conference in grant Reiller, and and and Jarrell Brantley. So I think Charleston rises to second in the conference, and then you have northeastern Delaware, you know, on the bottom. It really is hit and miss. You have some bad defensive teams in the colonial this year..

"Ohio High School Athletic association is asking parents to basically shut your pie hole blaming bad behavior for the shortage in high school officials. What is the what is the most heinous parenting in behavioral you've seen at a sporting event? Gary appreciate you hanging in there so long thanks for calling six ten WTVN. Got a good one for us. Gary. Well, yeah. You know, I've seen a few over the years in baseball. I've been licensed for over twenty five years, and I've seen a few. But the worst ones I've ever seen during basketball. And I think you were saying something before that I agree with, you know, with basketball, especially at the high school level. You know, you are so incredibly close to the I don't know how those guys handle the screaming fans, but I was at a basketball games up at the fairgrounds Coliseum once and we were there. I was just there as a fan, but plus we had a little boost they're trying to recruit newer officials and put them in touch with people who teach different classes, and you know, whatever sport a person was interested in and it was a regional semi-final basketball game that ended controversially and the one team that you know, apparently thought they were getting the short end of the stick, you know, they proceeded as they were leaving paintwork Cussing. That us who was just sitting there trying to recruit new officials. They were people were housing saying all you fficials. Are you know, screwing us, or whatever whatever, you know. And you know, I will say that the number of years that I've done it. I can say that I think the behaviors gotten worse, and I think that what you said earlier about going to these travel tournaments to stop the amount of money that parents or pouring into their kids for whatever crazy reason they're doing that is probably the number one contributing factor. I think there's porn so much money into it. They think their kids are to be the next Derek jeeter. Lebron james. Turn all this money at their at their son sports in a and I want to hide something else. You're saying that you know, you've had a few callers say, well, you know, the guy sitting in the football fans, and he sold his bad call like, no, he saw perceived bad call because what kind of you does he have from thirty forty yards away or more. I mean, and that's the biggest problem that people just feel like, you know, that they just got to speak up or they gotta yell where they got a concert scream or whatever. Now, let me ask you understand that mentality. I was just going to say number one. You do say you believe is getting worse. You've been doing this for a while. And number two. Did you have kids that participated in high school sports? I don't have any kids myself, okay, younger I coached a little league coach and travel for a while and stuff like that. And and as an official, of course, I told my team is only one person talking to the right something that's going to be made. You know, if it needs to have a discussion it's going to be made. But I just think, you know, part of it is to as an official sometimes officials. You can't do anything about fans pretty much basketball game football game. You can't really do a whole lot there to control the fans, but you can definitely control the coaches and the behavior of the kids, and you have to do that quick and early to try to to try to mitigate some of that or whatever, but it's getting worse. And we're losing officials. That's the number one reason why we're losing officials is because of how they're being treated. So I think people need to take a deep breath and realize their son's not going to be the next LeBron James or Derrick jeeter and chill out for a little bit. All right, Gary. Thank you for sharing. Joe? Let's get with Joe six ten WTVN. He and Joe what's the craziest sports parrot you've ever seen what kind of what kind of heinous activity. Did you have you witnessed to well, this this happened probably twenty years ago and? I used to I used to organize a three on three basketball tournaments, and so I had one at Franklin park. And so it was like high school maybe middle school. Boys and girls. So, you know, we're not talking something that was going to be on in the paper the next day or covered by TV wasn't gonna give anybody a scholarship. Parents didn't spend any money to get to see them. They're right there. You know, it was in Franklin park in this. The teams were all from Columbus. So I wasn't repping, but I was walking around. And apparently there was a game that parents didn't like the results, and after they got done yelling at the rest somebody being hey that guy organized it.

"That's the national collegiate Athletic Association baseball lacrosse, swimming. And most of these athletes earn a degree as they hostile on the field and in the gym, everyday Cameron countryman was one of them. He played football for the university of Pennsylvania until he graduated in twenty sixteen. He's twenty four years old now I caught up with Cameron at the place that holds the most memories for him. We're at Franklin field. This is our the home stadium of the Penn Quakers, and I played on my home games here for four and a half years. This is where I spent most of my time. This is where I would say I was the happiest on say some of the big wins. Big losses. Every time. I come back y'all come back here and run the stadiums or run around the track to work out. And every time I do that. You know, you think about certain plays that you missed or you made and all that kind of stuff. Cameron started playing football as a kid by the time. He was in college. His body was showing signs of wear and tear. I had a shoulder surgery had bilateral sports hernia surgery, and then just multiple tears, and strains and that you just kind of play with and are used to. But I've had I think I've had six surgeries total shoulders getting repaired hips getting repaired. It's on the ticks toll on you, mentally, it's exhausting because you know, you're going to get hurt. It's just win. And what kind of injury it is. So a lot. Hopefully, you know, what something that you can play with. And you you tape up or ice up, or, you know, you're in the training room all the time. Just so that you can you can play, you know, where are you worried with each of these injuries that it would end your college football career, which would also mean probably a change in your tuition rate. And so on that's a lot of stress. No, absolutely you. I don't think. You ever stop thinking about that? It's always in the back of your mind. And I think that's one of the biggest stresses is, you know, getting hurt. What happens when you do get hurt? So being able to be be mentally strong enough to to get set. Back overcome injuries. Stay in the classroom. Keep your grades up. It's all exhausting. You know, but but it's it's worth it. I'll tell you right now, it's worth it. And I wouldn't trade it for anything level of injuries. You head is that fairly typical for a football player in college. Yeah. I would say, you know, every every position kinda has the their injuries that are a little more common. But yes, shoulders, shoulders, hips, and knees or very popular and you see guys going down with contact or without just the twist of the knee and and they're out for the season. So thank God. That didn't happen to me. A lot of my stuff. I was able to play with or playthrough get repaired in the off season kit repair, get repaired by onic limbs. No, I'm just kidding. I was a little biotic man by the time. You know, my career was over. And then Cameron also had to keep up with his studies which often came at the expense of sleep. A lot of the work is it's up to you to get your work done. And you're around some of the smartest people in the world when you come to an Ivy league institution a little intimidating despite all the stress Cameron says he would still love to be playing..

A few spotty sprinkles or a flurries will also be possible. I'm wwl Kyi. Meteorologists Suzanne Oregon. Last friday. Lifelock member is we're not nearly as concerned as other people were when they heard about the latest and largest data security breach in our history. Yeah. The news broke just before our show on Friday, the Marriott hotel chain disclosed that more than three hundred million guest records were subject to a cyber attack. If you were a guest at a w hotel or Saint Regis, Sheraton, a western you may be affected. These were all part of the Starwood company that Mary out acquired. None of the Marriott branded chains per se were involved, the breach could be as far back as two thousand fourteen Marriott learned about it. In September of this year and reported it at the end of November last week. They got addresses credit card numbers birth dates. Passport numbers lot of data involved in this breach. And it went on for a long time. This has been my point all along when your name gets stolen as part of a database. You don't know you have no idea, especially if the company does not report the theft. The only way you're gonna find out is one day your credit card charges are through the roof. And you're not gonna know why it's because somebody's gotten hold of your data, and is using it. That's where lifelock comes and see lifelock members have peace of mind that they have identity theft protection the best. In fact, LifeLock's monitoring systems are constantly looking for evidence of unauthorized use of an identity. They see it. They notify you immediately. You respond just as quickly whether you're say, Yep. That's me. Me or no, it's not me. And if it's no it's not you then everybody gets in gear trying to track it down. "Be the other team. Out of the American Athletic Association. Tried to get all the quarterback draw. Gone. You will see? Thirty six yard touchdown run. So we won't see USF trying to do at UCF did last year. That's what I was trying to save you there. They will not be pulling anything like that. They're now no longer unbeaten USF dominated fifty seven to thirty six at Houston. So Houston's won its fifth straight by the way, six hundred eighty four yards of total offense. If your team isn't good enough to make the fallout. Well, complain to your athletic director complain to your head coach we're gonna have some eliminating games next week. So we got elimination game. With Georgia Kentucky that'll be an elimination game. We got an elimination game with Oklahoma and Texas Tech. That's an elimination game. We got an elimination game next week with Alabama LSU. If LSU loses they have a chance to be eliminated. So lots of things coming. That's what the fall that's about every week. And that is the fantastic work of my producer, Anthony Perrino and the the tape ops here at CBS sports radio doing that fine work every week. Thank you so much guys. It is greatly appreciated. Okay. Alex Perlman's with us, Alex. Let me ask you something right now if you were to say where jets are in New York, and where giants are in New York. What's the vibe? The vibe right now, I would say is that things are maybe looking a little bit more up for the jets than the giants. That's kind of a little bit more despair for the giants, whereas despair. Well, yeah, I mean, how is it? Not at this point guy. Love watch. I love watching what the what the jets have got. I'm so happy for Anthony our producer being able to be a jet fan and to see a young quarterback. They're learning on the job optimism. I mean, you know, and it's not like Sam darnold is going to have any weapons today. See Kerley judge does even this year. But as long as he stays healthy and and gets better. I mean, the defense has played. Well, I think there's reason for optimism with the giants like where do we go from here? We don't have a quarterback we are going to be able to get one the giants going to be able to get one in the draft. They may not get the one that they want, but they're going to be able to get a quarterback. But they're not going to get the number to overall pick again. I mean, it it it's over. No, you never know. Might be terrible. True. They could continue to be able to continue to be that miserable. And actually, I would be really horrible that would break my heart, by the way, if the giants continued to really suck like this. It would be for them, though, is it would it would. But then again smart doesn't really seem like it's the giants thing right now. It just doesn't. I we're gonna talk about the war college football. What we saw yesterday plus a World Series ratings falling through the roof. Yeah. They're going that glass ceiling thing, they're falling down. They went up and the other plummeting what's going on. Why are people turn it off the World Series? Maybe it's seven and a half hour games. We'll get to that. Plus, we'll talk to Corey McCartney from Fox Sports south on the elimination games coming up in college football. And what he's seen so far. We'll get to that next. The jonky Keijo CBS sports radio.
