"Paraplegics and amputees and there's the death. There's the blind and their mission, ASTRO access is mission is to make sure that people with disabilities can be in space that space is affordable and available to all of us. Through this program. And so I'm really excited about being able to be a part of it. I touch so many different facets when I look at my intersection in life. And with as many kids that I get to walk out, speak to talk to being able to add this adventure and being able to talk about it later will let these kids know that no matter what, you can dream big and you can have these trains. Is that also why you write children's books? I do. I write the children's books. It started off as a joke. 'cause I created the character, and then people were like, what are we doing with the character? And the character is doctor H, is that you? That is me, and she has the hearing aids just like me. And it was more or less to show people that you don't have to look or be like everyone else to still be able to do the things that you love to do. So in the book, we traveled through space and in doing that, the kids get to learn amazing facts about planets, and I absolutely love it. So when the kids see me, they go, oh my God, you're back from space. And it's like, yes, I went in my imagination, but I went. And so they also get to understand that it's okay to be able to imagine and dream the things that you want to do because you can either write about them as an author, or

"I mean, I think for me, the big barrier it seems to me to wider adoption for a product like this, or just in personal terms, the thing that would stop me from buying something like this is the price tag in relation to its actual use cases. This is a very expensive product. It's a $1000 now when it's invite only and when it opens up Amazon says it'll be $1500. That is a lot of money for a device that I feel like doesn't really have a great central use case. It doesn't have a real central identity. And I would love it's funny because we've talked about robot vacuums a couple times here. And robot vacuums are definitely dumber than ASTRO, but they also have a very clear use case. You buy this thing and if it works well, it'll clean your apartment floor. That's like a very solid thing that it's genuinely helping with. ASTRO doesn't really have that yet. And so that's what I'd really like to see. I think right now the personality is winning over people's hearts and money. I think that's the goal of it. But then it's got to actually have staying power and to have that staying power. It's got to have a clear function that's going to be worth the money for people. Got it. The other argument that needs to be made is for some folks always getting around the idea of what is essentially a camera with wheels. I mean, is there what did you think about in terms of the privacy aspect of this device? Yeah, so Amazon has clearly put in a lot of work here to try to assuage some people's anxieties about this. A lot of the processing happens locally, most of the mapping is stored locally on the device. It's only a very kind of trimmed down version of the map that gets transferred to your app for just for navigation purposes. So from that perspective, I think that those are good measures that they have in place. My concern is that there's a broader pattern of just a lot of different kinds of devices that are smuggling cameras into households. And really just normalizing the pattern of having us, I guess normalizing it for us to be kind of observed constantly to have cameras around at all times. And that to me is a very kind of troubling pattern. And ASTRO is very much a part of that. So for me, is ASTRO in and of itself, super problematic..

"Mean, they were having it act like animals. They were asking it to burp and then rolling around laughing when it did it. I mean, I think one of my kids asked it to do the robot probably like 40 times in a row when he first saw it. Which got old quickly. But also, you can kind of see how thin some of that is when you have it around for a few days. My kids lost a lot of interest in it after four or 5 days. Kind of like they did with the Amazon echo when they realized they could make it make fart noises or something like that. That last that lasted for like a day. And then the entertainment value kind of dropped off. So I think the same thing is true with ASTRO. And Amazon at this point, you know, for my kids, basically they use our echo to play music. And I suspect over time that would kind of be the same thing with ASTRO too. It would kind of just fall into that routine. And beyond beyond so that the cute factor, what were some of your other early impressions from this thing? Yeah, so ASTRO is definitely a finished product, right? The hardware, the hardware is there, that's not a beta device. But it very much is still in process in terms of its in terms of its kind of backend development. So when we set it up, I've been testing it for a bit over two weeks at this point. And I've had to be on and off phone calls with Amazon multiple times as we've figured out issues with its navigation. When it mapped our House, the CNET smart home originally, it had trouble because the floors were a little bit too shiny and some of the windows were too bright, and we have kind of this exposed.

"In the 21st century This is morning edition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin And I'm si vinski How did a music festival in Houston end with 8 people dead Rapper Travis Scott began his ASTRO world festival on Friday night and it attracted 50,000 people Despite an effort to address widespread concerns about security a rush to the stage turned deadly Houston public media's Paul de benat Benedetto has been covering the story Paul good morning Good morning What was this festival for those who aren't familiar with it and how to go wrong So this is a festival that's thrown pretty regularly semiannually by Houston rapper Travis Scott He's a sort of major pop star and he's from the city It's a usually a huge event police say they started seeing people collapsing during Scott's set around 9 30 that night and reached out to organizers but the concert didn't stop for about another 40 minutes There's video of concertgoers who were scrambling to get the attention of a cameraman who was filming the event and there has been one video on social media where Scott himself appears to notice somebody in the crowd is in trouble and calls for security Houston police have defended that response They've argued that abruptly stopping the show could have caused a riot but overall 8 people died more than a dozen others or hospitalized in the aftermath The youngest of those who was injured is just ten years old Let's talk through that timeline a little bit more police said that stopping the show sooner might have caused fatalities of a different sort People being angry they'd lost the show But what in fact did happen So within that 40 minute lag between when police contact the promoter and the end of the concert we don't yet know everything that kind of occurred during that time Travis Scott recorded a statement on Instagram I could just never imagine a severe situation We've been working closely we've been working closely with everyone to just try to get to the bottom of this So he's saying he's not quite sure why it took him so long to stop the show even though he himself from what you said seemed to be concerned about things happening in the crowd How were police handling this leading up to it So crowd control has been an issue in the past for this event But this year the number of police increased HPD said there were hundreds more officers 500 throughout the day about 300 active during the incident So please bulked up their presence for previous concert There was a medic tent on site and also there were more private security on the ground So clearly police felt prepared but the bottom line is that a few minutes into the set problems really did quickly emerge and shortly after that police and private security were overwhelmed So what happens now Well the investigation is going to continue They'll police will probably review footage to look at the actions of individual fans So far what we know as of this morning is that at least two attendees have sued the festival organizers including Travis Scott including promoter live nation One suits being filed on behalf of Alex Costa who was one of the concerts who died another is from someone who was injured who accuses the organizers of negligence Now Travis Scott is known throughout his performances to kind of encourage fans to dance and mosh But obviously what happened on Friday is a completely different thing So we expect to see more lawsuits filed in the coming days Houston public media's Paul debit Benedetto thanks so much Thank you Vice president Kamala Harris heads to Paris tonight she is using part of her international trip to mend a rift with France but it's also her first overseas visit where she'll be the top U.S. official at a large gathering of world leaders and pair White House correspondent Oslo reports On this trip she'll have FaceTime with some two dozen world leaders including some of the biggest leaders in Europe like Germany's Angela Merkel and Italy's Mario Draghi It's a high profile venue for someone who has spent most of her career on domestic issues and a chance for her to build up a foreign policy track record Apprenticeships are good workflow Colin doik is a former adviser to multiple Republican presidential candidates In other words proving her own sense of who the major players are what their views are gaining that international experience that foreign policy experience He now teaches at George Mason university and he says if Harris is planning to run for president in the future and she needs to develop in international portfolio She's not terribly experienced on foreign policy so she's got to you know she's got to gain that experience meet foreign leaders travel develop her own views Here is supporters say it's not fair to compare her to the president with his decades on the global stage They say she has a global orientation visiting India as a child and going to high school in multicultural Montreal And they say her instincts are solid Hailey sofer was a national security adviser to Harrison Congress and points out that her old boss was on the Senate intelligence committee dealing extensively with Russia She does have experience with regard to foreign policy and national security issues And a lot of that experience that was gained in the Senate happened behind closed doors Still there is no question that Harris's political focus has been on domestic priorities For vice president Harris as with her predecessors taking this sort of trip and speaking in Paris and being seen meeting with president Macron is helpful in its part of the process of credentialism is a diplomat That's Joel Goldstein at St. Louis university He's considered one of the foremost experts on the vice presidency One of the things that has made foreign travel appealing to vice presidents going back to Richard Nixon is that it presents them as a leader on the world stage It elevates them Harris will be attending a multilateral conference on Libya and also speaking at the Paris peace forum Those sorts of meetings while they're often dismissed as being ceremonial There are times where vice presidents are presidents or Secretary of State can actually do a lot of business because they can see a lot of people And you never know what relationship you may develop Chips like this are always part image building part educational and part diplomatic Harris will meet with French president Emmanuel Macron less than two weeks after President Biden met with him The United States relationship with France hit a rocky patch in September after a U.S. deal with Australia for nuclear powered submarines shut France out of a contract Celia Ballon with the brookings institution says it's all part of an effort by high level U.S. officials to remind the French that they value this partnership The vice president is basically a part of the charm operation that the United States implemented towards France in the past month and a half But Harris in Paris is not just about Paris Experts say there will be a lot of curiosity from other world leaders about this woman the top U.S. official at the table a woman.

"It's Terry here. It's Friday. I want to tell you about this latest announcement from Amazon. And I've been alluding to it over the past couple of days. Let's get right to it. ASTRO what is ASTRO ASTRO is a household robot for home monitoring and beer assistant with Lexi built in and it's quite something. We have never seen anything like this before. It's the first idea to have a robot really come to market. I'll tell you right off the bat right now that it is considered one of the day one editions products from Amazon, which means that it is only available exclusively by invitation at this point. However, I find it fascinating that this is where Amazon is going. I remember seeing some pictures on social media a couple of years ago of Jeff Bezos touring some robotic facilities. And I wondered at that time if this may be where Amazon's going. The truth is, in the recent announcements, Amazon announced that they believe that in the next 5 to ten years, Holmes will have robots. And so they said this is not the first rollout that they are building. Anyway, ASTRO, what does it look like? I don't know how to describe it. You have to look it up and see the pictures. It kind of looks more like a little pet than a humanoid type figure. It's got a couple of big wheels that help it get around. It's got what looks like a neck with a screen on the screen are some eyes that can move depending on what ASTRO is doing. Of course, it is voice activated. On their schematics, it shows that there's a cup holder at the back so you can use it to deliver things around the house. And I find it very interesting that it looks more like a pet, as opposed to a human. And what are the implications for that in terms of the way that we as people will interact with this device. Anyway, you've got to check it out. It's called ASTRO. You can see it on the Amazon.com site. Fascinating, all I know is that when I am able to get when I'd love to try this in my home and see what it's like, of course, there are huge privacy issues with this. Amazon says that that is something that they are very, very committed to protecting. For example, they said that as one example, you can set up Astros so that there are certain rooms that are essentially no go zones. So you can prevent ASTRO from going to those rooms. There are ways that you can turn off ASTRO entirely and so on. We'll see really fascinating and really exciting story. I think there's a lot here in terms of sci-fi movies and well, you know, when I think about ASTRO, what was George Jetson's pet name? Wasn't it ASTRO? I think it was. Anyway, this is a lot of fun. Look it up. Have a look at Amazon's new ASTRO and I'd love to hear what you think. Hit me up on Twitter, doctor Terry Fisher, DR TRI, FIS HER, and tell me what you think of this device. Would you have it in your home? I'd love to know. All right, talk to you soon..

Clearly hopes will look back one day at astro and see it as the historic first foray into a new consumer product category. "Katie collins knows a thing or two about robots locum katie. It's lovely to be here. Roger thank you for having me. So what were your first impressions. When astro ruled onto the screen during the amazon bent. Well i mean i was. I think we were all really surprised. I certainly was. And i just really wasn't expecting it. I thought about was wrapping up to be quite honest city. And i'm always delighted to see a new robot and i. I my first impression. Was you know. I feel like this is quite similar to some of the home. Robots that we've seen before they kind of got a bit of a wally vibe to it. It's got the is in sort of like more more of a kind of salt like on a screen the white body. I feel like it's not the first of its kind so while i was pleasantly surprised i wasn't blown away while. What is this thing for those who didn't catch the event or coverage. Yesterday you could just run through quickly. What is astro- again. What does it meant for. Yes so australia is amazon's entry into the home robotics field. It comes with some kind of key. Bits of technology. It comes with kind of computer vision recognition. So it can recognize you and your family. And potentially strangers in your. It's going to screen. It comes with kind of all of the smarts and intelligence that we have come to expect from alexa amazon's alexa imbued products such as the echo. But it kind of moves around on wheels so that you can interact with it on the go it can interact with your house. It can kind of map. Your house seeming uranium..

"Well we did get a robot. From amazon weasel he looks kinda bleak. Last week looked kinda bleak but amazon came through our new amazon robot named astro. It's a smart display on. Wheels has a periscope camera that can expand its field of view. It can detect. Sounds like breaking glass can also detect smoke. And if you have ring protect as a subscription it can also patrol your home while you're away so it's kind of your companion when you're home but it can also kind of be your eyes and ears when you're not home if your video call can follow you around the house or play music. That never is too far away from me with speakers. It does amazon's visual. Id so it can deliver messages or even things to people. If you drop a beer in the cargo bin and say take this to erin. It would recognize aaron and then she could get the beer because it was for her a do not disturb mode limits. That sort of thing astro will be available in limited quantities. Later this year at an introductory price of one thousand dollars eventually selling for one thousand five hundred dollars so that introductory prices quite a bit less pricey then the eventual price. You know. it's kind of interesting that i was reading a the. Everybody covered the australia about this morning. But i was reading the verge article on on the astro and in a couple places it said and like the roomba it can kind of make a map of your home and like the roomba it can. It can get itself back to its charging station when it's done doing. Its thing or when it needs to charge up and kind of. I know that the design would have to be completely different for this to be the case. But why isn't it also a vacuum that would be like the killer robots. Because you wouldn't always have to be vacuuming something. But i i have a roomba and having a roomba and astros sounds crazy but having to in one makes much more sense. Oh you know the next product is going to be called rosie and have that right. I i wish it was already that the the jets and then i really wanted to go forward. I was going to have to talk about that. How she would feel never got her following me around but yeah it's an another huge robot out there but yeah i think it was kind of a notable that this one seems like it'll be more available at times on we've seen robots. They are either dislike incredibly incredibly expensive or their concepts. So we'll hopefully have the chance to see this in wildest center as it is it's relatively cheap compared to other robots. "Refreshing experience that you're used to notably when i was playing with astro it was broken and they know it's broken okay. There was no hot module reloading astro either. I assume they're going to fix that because they literally have to. Or nobody's gonna use on the market on the table stakes the features. You gotta have that these days. I'll tell you. I work on some two different next sites. Recently it's awesome the friggin reloading. Speed and action in next is excellent. Yeah see you hook in iraq and it knows exactly what to do nothing changes. I just go hit the button again and have a different console dot log somewhere and it just fires. It's just i use on to next projects and it's the same. It's surprising because i'll hit. Save him oh you oh you just did it. You just knew you know. Sometimes it gets beefed like when you like like switch to scope styles or modify something like that like the scoping but and then you know all these tools are built on like a big web packs them so they like. It's kind of hard to debug. You know like you get an error and error in run time. Jay s you know in your like That could be a big lake right my vine that later them as raider murmur. Yeah that's another kind of bonus thing. I was trying to ask around about that the other day because when you have an error in next they use some third party thing which this is what. I'm curious about what is it or did they write it or what but it definitely feels like a third party thing that like a really bold error message comes up as a modal with like a stack trace in it and syntax highlighted code. That shows you the line of code that it broke on. That experience is tremendously good the x. As well they just don't have and other projects that i work on frigging love it. It's so well done. You know like any kind of auto complete. I if i so tailwind i'm not the biggest fan. That's fine if you use it that's awesome. I suppose where you're going with that. I think it is built into astro. Is it well. I was just gonna say like some kind of support tailwind like auto completes and stuff like that are really good in. Even if you're like like i feel like autocomplete and stuff like that like really enables you to write. Tailwind i just. I've been thinking about utility costs. I'm not sure they are like super helpful. Until like we had really good autocomplete or if you're in the browser and you can hit the like class thing and like thai. Start typing Class guessing a class. And then ill like ought show you which one The autocomplete stuff makes tailwind and stuff like that easy. Because you can just start guessing what it's probably called and then it'll autocomplete for you some. I just want to put that out there. Like that's a very helpful feature some and one day. I dunno all hopefully html or like web components or you know our own components. You know the like do a good job just like auto completing the props that you need and stuff like that. I think we're pretty close here with intellisense and all that stuff but you wanna ride typescript you can write in typescript and you put a style block in it. And it's automatically scoped like spelt and you can do. In view i regal scope style. Would another novel concept man. Maybe some browsers implement it. You know that would be good for my. I've heard i've heard. I've heard chatter. I think we're going to get it back. It's going to look back. Everything i think so..

I love hit in the streets as well. I mean the train. Nothing's gonna take the train narrow. That's my number one love because it was such an adventure you know does does the senior stuff run all city but like hitting the streets was like the next best thing and trucks trucks in and trucks is good to shut up to seep trumpeting seeking including king's son out to him. You're like everybody everybody. Every everybody in the crew had their the advantages like secrets. Detroit's might you know me and the streets everybody. In the crew had honest had a. I had a goal and just just when they when they did it they when they went they will strategic when they did it they went all out and and and and who who's crew is five. Oh one hundred hundred a happened five zero one the meaning. Well actually like remember. Like i was telling you before like all the writers sava was soldiers. Yet city blake. All right is used to come to my crib. Used to do black folks and stuff like So when one day were sitting down you know and and it was like you know what i'm gonna bring like my forbes follow one so the reason why again with the with the subway book if you remember right as you know right is getting known more when they have numbers and back of their tax opinion such as my pin so when a right has a tag he has a number following it as more remember. Remember better like because you know there could be a right as they're right the same thing you know what i'm saying by the way the original fog. I don't think there's nobody that right folks. So like i just just thought about this putting a number you know in back of my my tax so then one day we was we was chilling and a slick was like you know it was me slick and sign and it was a whole bunch of us in the room and i think it was slicked. I said you make it a crew like you should make it a cruel. you know. I think that recipe sleep. I was like i think. That's that's a good idea. Let me just make it a crew. Because it's just i first of i wasn't thinking about making it a crew but when people kept telling me yo you think you should make it a crew. I was like you know what. Let me let me. let me go on. Have mentioned see how that unfolds. And i think i really good you know it did really really well. The would mean people that was in five one myself Nam sign slick Astral like a whole a whole bunch of was like was was like it was all off like you would like recruiters recruiters in an everywhere every whisk grew and grew and grew and grew and then we was like you know well as like later on in the years. You know what. I'm saying the whole five one up to one one actual question how When you started writing yeah believe it or not started Nineteen eighty-three of so It's funny because like i used to get inspiration from like people like writers from tv yes One of my experiences was kilo. Tv s you know. He he lived across the street from in crown heights. I used to live across the street from making terrorist park so Used like us to do graffiti. And i used to see like him. You know right in a like that and then he used to wear like the the jean jackets with the airbrush on the back and also your data look nice man. I wanna get into that. And what's funny. Is that my on like steve. Bought like a whole bunch of markers shift busted like you know like the drawn and stuff and i just like took that pilot and just went on trains and started. Doing you know just trying to get up. That was my mentality. Orcas know subway art. You know with the with the book. Subway are and star wars. And you know that's that's the biggest racer too. Many writers in that. That acts actually catapulted me to to to take it really serious you know how. How did you get your name. then fog. When you first started writing you just started off the bat for side. When i first started writing. I used to write as as e. y. And then i started like go answer like people know me from go ezzor And then i got fogs. But it's funny because sign actually signed was the one that he i. I took all the like when people start writing. They take the best letters they can write. And just make a tag. So i took the best that right and then i'm like a maytag but then sign was signed was drawing on this on his book and as you look like a fog and i said oh that's that's dope name and that's how i'm gonna take over and from there was fog false spot. You know on the train you know shot out the sign nine. Slick recipe's stand out to breyer coast. Like we used to like all of us was a little we all to meet up and and yeah for me. We we all used to meet. Meet him on my grave. Actually like you know we we. We used to like folks in my room and stuff and we all used to like you know like black folk like was really like like people just hit black. You know yeah that's dope. Because you like i said before i missed the train era. So was the other few like like doing phillies. Trains going in training going. Layouts how did none of that shit. Yeah no it not to be honest man like i want live it any other way. You know what. I'm saying. Like and virginia was like a big part of my life and stuff like that so in the trains with an inspiration like i said like you know looking at the subway books and looking at a and all those who you know may not w all these writers that that was bombed like that was like a big inspiration to me. And that's why like find. I come to my nam- sign Slick you know brea costa and let's go. Let's go out tonight. Let's hit the trains and us. You know pet and we should just pack up our book bags. You know we go rack and before you know what i'm saying like pergamon number kitchen magic's used to take the kitchen magic. You know world war pergamon and just down the leg. You know what. I'm saying so. We usually like just route paint. And then just go to the yards. We was crazy when with nwe we had. We had four hundred key so we used to just walk in there.
