Monday was like the perfect. You know walk into a tremendous saratoga. Del mar meets. They were there were cremades and they both said handle records which is obviously a great thing saratoga handle over eight hundred million dollars for forty days. Poetic flair is going to be in that raises while tarnow the last year Really impressive philly is going to be in there as well so that's gonna be a great natural upwards town And then the premium meal where we're gonna get to see snowfall not to me. I think is the most exciting. Maybe in the world definitely in europe. Hope fingers crossed. She's gonna come for the reader scott by know. The main goal is the art. Zena farm sheriff forgetting one of their partner but what an absolutely dynamic or is he is. And you know the i think the goal. I think they're being smart connections of john. Sadler being far not going to try to force him into one of the readers cup races. I think this is. This is the kind of horse that is gonna have a huge huge four year old season and also can possibly go further. He's only gone six furlong so far. I think he's got the reading obviously by tap into longer so i think it's smart for them to take it slow with him. The goal is going to be the malibu so the breeders cup and then try to make that a launch pad for an enormous four-year-old season because it talent is is actually generational. You just don't see. Horses run one all aid at tel mar and just run away from his other rivals. Stride by stride just wide with every strivings under very little urging. And i think he's gonna take the world by storm as a four year old if he can stay healthy Actually mind-blowing watch on sunday and as soon as he hit the gas. That race was over in the blink of an eye. You just don't see that on dirty that kind of turn of foot and it's just. It's just crazy to look at a horse's passer performances. Nc one five in one fourteen in their first two races. It just does not happen. And we're all fingers crossed that he'll stick around and stay healthy because he can be a once in a lifetime town. And i guess congratulations to west point never wages for for finding Biz Even if you had to spend one million dollars plenty of people spend a million dollars on horses and don't come up with horses like this for their entire lives but then the other side of it is a horse who could have been had for ten thousand dollars just a couple months ago in baby. Yoda he was debuted in ten thousand dollars maiden claimer off by ear nine lancs and is now also a potential superstar presented at saratoga on saturday and ran away to four and a quarter lengths. Victory is one hundred fourteen buyer. As well. And i think this is a very shrew private purchase by adam wachtel fell stables and those guys often allowance third at pimlico. They didn't buy him off the debut win. They bought him at least in terms of past. Performance is what they say. Maybe were in talks. After the debut went with the past performances day after the third he ran at emiko. That's pretty shrewd to be able to. You know follow through with that horse even after he didn't win so. This kind of illustrates the fact that a good horse can come from anywhere in this business. You pay a million dollars for one you can potentially fe. Whatever these guys aids you know couldn't have been a ton more than ten thousand dollars. He was he was up for in his debut and in both buyer figures make sense in terms of what the horses behind him run. So it's not as if you know it's one of these races where you see this horse explode into this figure that everybody beneath him also Needs a little dubious. These figures made. Says i i was blown away by both lumped especially line visually. What do you guys think about having this. These horses break like this and also just joining this monster monster. Three-year-old sprint ambition. Not all your both really good horses. Fascinating horses Particularly because their background and how they came from both sides of the tracks so to speak on flying has a clear path that he's because the malibu's skull out magic johnson others trying to find allowance race now In the only thing this isn't a not but is he perhaps want us forces. Any of us up seemed a long long time especially if he can stay healthy and if only law next year. I mean there's just you know you can't even into imagine on what i do. Now you guys are. You talk about joe. He broke his maiden for ten runs in the start allowance wasted saratoga which is for orphan flavors and then come back and funds off the charts races. You know this is just i.

I feel so free can say whatever i want but yeah i mean i think there are certain horses that y- they lose interest if you let them lag back too far they just you can get a little bit of run out of them. But they're just you know. I think some voice as they wanna be up with the leaders and be engaged early. And that's that's the way to to keep They make them run their best for the entirety of the race and finished the best. I think that's the case with him again. Carlos santana i think it has been a you know a a defined Kind of tactic from steve asmussen. But ricardo santana wins a lottery. Because he's aggressive. And i just i gotta i gotta beat that horse again one more time. I'm just so tired of seeing know. Grab fast especially on the turf. Aggressive riding pays off nine times out of ten students. Want to move on to a couple other results. You know warlike goddess in the flower bowl. Thought that was an interesting kind of performance because unlike the other racists she was not traveling that well early and was was kinda ranked pass the stands for the first time. And you know. I just you know she's supposed to be that field matter. What but i gotta say if you if you had her to defy were phelan that great the first time around you know she just dudes fighting jillian leper or a little bit. But she did save all the ground and each if she was at all right she was always gonna trounce those phillies And she's obviously unbeatable. Appears going eleven. I think her chances kinda depend on whether the top euro phillies turf or the fillion mayor turf because as good as she is you know i just. I don't think she's anywhere. Close to matching up with some of the top phillies mirrors on in europe in europe like snowfall. We're gonna get to see this weekend in love in a couple other like i just choose not going to be able to stack up to those horses but if those horses of turf now she. She could be the horse to be in affiliate mary turf but i'm sure they'll cross that bridge when they get to it because she's already accomplished a ton a very short amount of time and she t- debut the lesson a year ago. She debuted as a late developing three-year-old at the end of september last year. And now she's six for seven with four graded stakes wins in agree. That's pretty damn good. So hats off to george krikorian and especially bill. Maher just had a monster weekend. We're gonna get a couple of his other non rated stakes horses in a little. I mean it's a very exciting time to work in the bill. Maher barn as far as the two year old takes go. The story is obviously gunrunner. And i just i. I don't know i have the stats for this. We need a crack researcher instead of john. Who's just a researcher on crack. Were gunrunner had four. Different graded stakes winners. How's that possible. There's only six graded stakes total in the summer and he had four of them with four different horses. Which is absolutely incredible. He swept grade ones at saratoga echo zulu on sunday and has been away in a gun on monday in the in the whole full both ran very well at the goodnight ran a little bit better. In terms of the circumstances rea- kind of four store fast paced had to come up inside horses again. Ricardo santana decided to use lower speed instead of taking him back and it worked out But just i can't remember a freshman sire ever starting like this with this. Many top level horses What did you guys think of the rest of the stakes action. Yeah even. I don't pay any attention to pedigrees. Have been really impressed by what gunrunners doing the only thing i would add to that is I doubt john rain mass players rain on nights rate. I i wrote in my we can you this morning all for winners. Just don't do anything over the last four or five decades when it comes to the ground. It's just it doesn't fit. It's not the kind of race won by horses. Only gonna be successful around jackie's warriors a good example whose turned out to be a fabulous horse after winning the hopeful last year but they figured out very soon into it that he was not the worst. I would give up on. joe. I mean i know. He got trounced by this horse but he had a bad trip. I mean you have to start down the backstretch. He's i think he was nine eight nine lengths behind. I mean at that point he was really going to have to be cessation. Athletes sensational get the job done. So i i think we'll hear a little bit more. I wouldn't give up on him. And i think maybe actually i would say out of the horses. I still might think that he's one was likely to have a say on. What goes on up expert in in the road to the derby kirby itself but but we shall see. But yeah i mean and i know. We're going to talk about it. But you know just the insanity of you talk about the insanity of gunrunner insanity of steed asmussen winning grade one stakes race on three screen days Guide winning five over a nine day period. A going back to the prior weekend with with a gem gooding jackie's word yep victory. Was you know I'm getting a little bit off subject here. But even though chad round on the training titled steve asmussen. That's that's the wonderful thing about our businesses that you look at pedigrees you look at sire lines and you say gunrunner. Didn't you know really start developing until us four and five year old. You know years of his of his career. And i know it was by design. We had a great interview last week with wind. Chill said we knew he wasn't going to be nearly two year old so we gave them time. And that's all true. If you would have said to me which of the freshman sires are going to have multiple grade one winners four a multiple grade one winners. There would have been a handful of other stallions. I personally would have picked. And i think the general you a group in you know of of horse racing fans and and experts would've ahead of gunrunner because he was a later developing horse so to have this kind of early You know a great results and is just mindblowing And he's doing it all over the place he's doing it across the country colts and fillies and it seems like that. They should be getting better as they go longer. And i'm really looking forward to when both good night and wit run a mile and then go to turns. I'm assuming they're both gonna go head to head. In the champagne the winner in one turn mile at belmont You know that next next off but you know it could be setting up to be a really really interesting breeders cup. Because i agree with you. Both horses actually. I think as the as the racist go further both of them were going to really You know take that in. Enjoy that There's no they're not front running sprinters that are kind of hanging on an as impressive as the hopeful winner was about echo zulu and it was a different day and there was some different different track surfaces because of the rain but echoes zulu actually ran three fifths of a second faster. Pretty much a handwrite. Also from from gates a wire and she won the spillway and the spin away. I think top the bottom. Maybe wasn't as deep of a field as the whole but i think it's safe to say that. Echoes zulu was equally impressive as her male counterpart in winning the spin away. and i think the present going one turn is really gonna play right into her wheelhouse. 'cause i was stuck behind a school bus twenty minutes to get my dunkin donuts this morning. Do you do have a tough life. I feel so bad for our right. I know well that that that extra fifteen minutes took me could have gone to preparing for this show. So there's going to be gaps now and it's going to be on on the school bus kids because those data get material. I'm finally the old man in town like my kids through the school system. And now i'm the one who's like i'm not paying taxes for this damn school system. I'm the old man on the on the front lawn yelling and screaming into the taking after bill. Wrap the both meets on a little bit. I think there were both very very positive. Special fans back But the the centerpieces of the weekend were the the great ones for the two year olds. But also the jacksonville gold cup in the flower. All on saturday for older horses at saratoga. This is an old school belmont racegoer. It's hurt hurt my heart a little bit. I gotta be honest to see the giant goal cup in the flower bowl at saratoga. You know those those used to be really really big races. That were like the center of the belmont. Even woodward's attract quite as much attention Why did it anyway. The winner of the giants job was max player. Steve bit. The story of the meat steve resume and just the just absolute monster performances for him. Jackie's warrior max player. Two year olds It goes on and on match player. I thought you know the difference for him. The last two races because he was a little bit of early developing three-year-old that it'll wall last year. Got a couple of cups thirds belmont drivers but overall did not do a lot of running after the weather is last year. I think the difference for him has been ricardo santana using his speed. And i'm gonna beat this dead horse again you know there's another great aggressive ri- by santana and aggressive writing. Pays off gentlemen. He took it to four zero early. I like for the van. Hits by buddy pretty over bet even money in that race considering how little eat accomplish And santana and maximum didn't give him a breather and if he drops back and makes water run. I gets away with a much easier pace. Max player probably can't catch him um in aggressiveness Wrestlers pays off part infinity. Us one you know your horses even necessarily have to have a ton of speed on april if they break well in the payslips race. Go and get some forward position. That's the difference from ex player. I thanked getting him in the balls in the race early. It happened in the suburban. He showed a lot more speed than he had ever in his career. And he's just a much better horse able keep him interested early in the race. That was my that was my main takeaway from the jockey. Gold gold cup. I thought or zero. I think in the derby and ran fifth or sixth in the in the preview fitness preakness. And you kind of say. Yeah you know. The horse really didn't deserve to be in that grew. They brought him over overseas. He ran a very lacklustre eleventh. In you know in the saudi cup. Then they burn back in the pimlico special you said belly you ran a really poor race then and i think it has to be that they put him on the engine like joe said and that's made the difference where you know. It's the common beat me coming. Beat me you know. Knicks go style. Basically are crusca style and using this know giving the horse the advantage of using its speed if you look in the breezes of late. Everything's bullet breeze. Everything is on the engine on the engine on the engine And that seems to be the best tactic for a horse like this but you know. Look i don't wanna take anything away from the busy one. Great one and that's always really really really difficult to do percentage. It just doesn't happen that often.

Which i'm excited to be there to be there for thursday But they put together that saturday card which is just mind blowing every card. If you're if you're a turf fan. Every card is like a skull. busting i crossing scenario. it's it's just crazy crazy You know the two million dollar races saturday the turf sprint and the turf cup twelve horses in each and first time looking at the morning line actually and cassock read seven two favourite and got stormy the ninety two second choice so a pretty Pretty heady week. I tyler i know you yesterday i could tell lee was lee was getting anxious about the today and the hopeful well steve asmussen in the meantime has mentioned steve scott horses in both the del. Mar futurity and the hopeful. So we'll get a glance at that gun knight who's done a lot of developing and would have to take one more step forward seems to edge his way in and then at del mar got american experiment with rispler in this evening's del mar futurity. And if you haven't if you haven't thought about how long the day is going to be. Yeah it you're gonna have to labor through labor day It it goes it goes to. Arnold with cellist who who ran fine and just didn't have the punch up the hill and a credit through the cracks Yeah you know you ended up with a short price. There were there were four or five horses under ten to one and then it jumped up into the teens and then jumped up into the thirties and forties and fifties had sort of three layers levels of of player in that dueling ground derby yesterday to get things going and of course you had a fifty to one shot early on the card. Certainly i mean certainly flight line last evening at del mar that was that was no surprise and and we had you know we talked about it with jay. And and i think with brad to With brad free but that that was just. I mean i'm sure sure to. It's it's kind of a paid work out. You know winning by a dozen but if he was racing against the clock it a we we talked about it while we were out there that that is a very deep slow surface. He stopped the clock in one eight flat and was basically on cruise control. You know the final sixteenth under flavian. So i i mean who knows. I we talked about how important that allowance looked with some big returnees most notably that at least to me going in his stablemate. Olympiad coming back. Barber liam's dove kyle fi and a could've used that kyle fry effort on on saturday night in the in the del mar derby none above the law though joe bravo with an absolute brilliant. Ride to win that del mar derby. That was that was something down inside. You know what's that tricky opening by the shoot and wow really really high wire act joe. Bravo's how great summer and he's staying out there. You saw that late. I don't know if i i don't know if it came out friday or wooden or late last week and i didn't mention it but joe bravo's staying.

What i felt was a tough luck. Loss in the debutante at churchill broke stutter-stepped from the insides. Twenty one and two First quarter mile and You know hired a little bit late. Two thirds i thought her transition from churchill to saratoga. Better timing and She was simply a bitter More mature philly for a very hard race yesterday Her mother you know having being able to have success in this race with her mother and then her hottest us out to get here. I think i made mistakes with their mother. Going stretching around off of a very hard race in the adirondack and so. I'm not going to make the same mistakes with her daughter. Wicker's halo and i'm gonna back off her bit and then coming in at a later date so there's no rush toward Toward a fall a serious fall campaign and ideas of I mean is is the breeders cup juvenile. "Just a great guy. Very great guy. Yeah but but but he's a great guy. And i was really you know. I didn't expect less but i. I was just really happy that i was able to pay tribute to jeff and again you meant so much to so many people and that kind of like if you think about your life you measure of your life is how you positively impacted other people how. You touched other people in those respects. Nobody physically lives forever but somebody will live forever because of how they touched other people s- absolutely and Racing in particular has that you know has that On both sides of the ledger The all the human all the human connections Whether from virtually every capacity whether it's horsemen And and everybody that works with forces whether it pours players breeders. I mean that whole that whole not trickle down effect but It it is a one of its main characteristics and qualities is the you know the handing down of Of a tradition. I mean i it's avenue and obviously was evident. You know this this weekend in particular but also with the horses th that. That's that's exactly you know the the the open up these pages For tonight and and Tomorrow and know next weekend from the new york breads and you look through those pages. And that's exactly the same thing the influence from generation to generation. And it's Again we it seems rich whenever we talk we find some of the the elements that make the game and the industry special and unique. And it's those specialties. And and you need the uniqueness that that makes it so foreign to you know the people on the outside looking in but that's we. We always talk about this. So that's why it's up to us to to bring them in to to to to expose them to. What really is our world not how our world is portrayed by people that actually have very little of it but what actually It's all about. And and i think this weekend. You know starting with the hall of fame and you just a shiny example of everything. Good in racing and in humanity you know on the race track And you know what steve asmussen has done and the fact that he's probably gonna train for at least another twenty years. He's going to continue to pay. Those statistics and i was texting with his brother cash. You know just you remarkable achievement. And you think about family His parents keith and marilyn incredible horse people his father maybe you know arguably the greatest horsemen with young horses. Starting babies breaking them get ready. You know he's the reason why so. Many of these forces are so good early because of the foundation he puts into them passes them on to steve. Who does you know continues. The incredible job of preparing them and finishing them cash one of the greatest drivers of all time revolutionize the way riders road in europe particularly in france You can see the profound influence he had on writers. They how they changed their seat. How they changed their approach. How they finish I don't think it's any I think there's a direct correlation. i should say between look at how good some of these writers that have come out of france bar. I think he had a direct influence on a flavian pratt on on a julian peru on the floor on jerusalem You know we never saw this. Many top riders commander frontier john. Luke was terrific crew. Gay terrific but like have three young guys. I think it's a direct Aligned to cash asmussen that that that he Again show. Those guys are different way to do it in a more effective way to do it And then steve all time winningest trainer. I mean only one guy can stand on that mountaintop. And that's him right now. That's amazing. I see anybody ever catching that but You know phenomenal and seeing. Steve attributes his parents. And i may have said it on here when i was sixteen. Go to ride the first japan cup. I'm by myself. And caches with his mom maryland and and she recognized that i was can. She basically snapped lead on me. And you know help. You know negotiate through customs. And where i had to go where to be you know quietly basically looked after me and i. It's a kindness. I'll never forget so. It just speaks volumes to these people and hurriedly they are good people and.

And i thought that embodied with the hall of fame supposed to be about and you know keiser about todd. I mean he. He's just such a pro on every level and life's about balance and trying to find that balance of being you know the husband is. The father is a horse trainer. Us and you know seemingly at times steve. I don't know how he fits so much into any one day. I you know. There's only twenty four hours a day. And i think he packs four in a day if you watch at the barn. And how early is there and you know how ladies there on the phone you know after the training hours is over you know talking with other assistants and owners and everybody that's involved You just to remarkable individuals could be more deserving of that honor but mark speech really got me. I will tell you that. I choked up a few times and that. Yeah that's been the that's sort of been the the key note That the that people have come away and and then he heard mark with me and and you know really Anytime you get a chance to hear extended thoughts You know we talked to him out. You know after. His father passed than and at various various times. The big wins After the after the preakness win and and Whatever the whatever the milestone might be after elusive queens. Play win you. You can tell me how much you know how much how much these people all carry. It doesn't not at not confined to mark. in fact it's actually a an easy theme of the weekend. They've got multiple hundred head under their care. at all. far flung locales and each of them can tell you what every single horse is doing on a daily basis and they you know they. They're going through the with each horse And it's remarkable. It's it's a capacity that is you can't be understated. And in addition to in addition to teaching their their philosophies and their approaches you know to you know they're they're lieutenants. i mean. That's a big part of this. It they they. Are you know fully involved with with every single horse that that is going to run under their name and that to me is amazing. it's phenomenal. You know they can come up with pedigrees and you know they train the grand dam or the brother the sister they they have such an incredible capacity to not only remember. You know every horse but such my new details of every horse. It's just it's remarkable. I can remember horses. I remember races a lot of things. I can't but not to the level these guys that just again i could see. Yeah i remember. I wrote that horse. They'll tell me. Oh yeah. He's a literally changing his lead. You to help them inside things like that like i i couldn't you know Come up with things like that but You know another thing that todd. And i don't want to get by without mentioning it. Brought up was jeff lukas and you know you know. Unfortunately a lot of people don't know just how good jeff lukas was You know he had that unfortunate accident but he was an incredible horsemen. Tabasco cat The summer is a two year old. I got him a bunch of times for jess and actually broke his maiden appear one allowance race sodom and he's very difficult And jeff would get on the pony and beyond him and he get up in the air and screwing. The gate was an adventure But that horse would have never turned out to accomplish. Nearly what he accomplished without jeff And then of course he was always ran over jeff but He would have been already inducted in that hall of fame you know he he certainly would have gone out his own at some point in the not too distant future From when the accident happened and he was he helped create todd pletcher in and all of these systems that came out of there. He was a huge influence on all of them. I mean obviously waiting to Under a selling wayne here. But jeff was a horseman on a level. That very rarely say very rarely. Now that's acknowledged by everybody including wayne that The you know the assumption is that he would have out paced ultimately You know even wayne's accomplishment that that's i mean that's how reverentially. Race mare rachel alexandra in this catalogue i mean that is that is depths of this book that you know and why it's such a elite sale that you can go on and on about this book for twenty minutes and not so good worse than the catalog. Just every horse in the sale hand selected by tipped and for their physical and pedigree attributes It's you know if you if you love horses and love looking at good horses. "What a saturday. Sunday should be. Probably what a. Monday tuesday unbelievable. I don't know where to where do you. Where do you draw the line. Where do you begin to tell the sweet love story. Unbelievable the ceremony which continue along ceremony on friday which gave rise to a very good race card and a fun afternoon and then into saturday where the obviously the stakes action was going to be terrific but in addition to the stakes action. It didn't take long. And i think everybody sense. I don't know. I've i've talked to a few people as it approached but it it kind of became. We'll say obvious but it really did feel likely as the maidens were heading to the gate For the fifth race that steve asmussen his first starter of saturday. After having tied dale baird for the all time win mark it felt like he was gonna get it and it's funny i of the two. I actually thought that the one out of hot city girl. The vodka martini martini. That i i. That's why actually leaned on and it didn't take long for once the gates open for stellar tap to exert himself and really stamp himself is a serious very nice two year old. And i i. In retrospect i guess it made perfect sense right. I mean here was here was the opportunity and i do have i. I did save that list. That i had put up on on saturday morning as i was writing up. My you know my racing My selections i. I came across that i knew that race and then as soon i saw that i said you know. Let me let me. Make a list of the asmussen's starters there. It is And get a feel for how this could unfold and the two fifty two post for the saratoga theft with the two horses. That was the first opportunity And then from there. It jumped to monmouth to a maiden special way and then the louisiana down claiming race so of the early opportunities. I this was the one that seemed to really come out of. Come out of script writing one on one here. It is a whitney day and just all it all fit. We're gonna talk to steve asmussen. i this morning about fifteen minutes or so we'll start the the recapping and there's just so much so much to get into and it was certainly notable you know. In addition to steve asmussen's record-breaking moment there was lots of harmonies out of the weekend with the hall of famers and and just with the high profile horsemen of well. You know of the era. He did something that that we can tell you that as a better if you bet a horse or if you're an owner and and you're watching your horse you'll love to see that that scenario where your horses just cruising and has got you know a a lead doesn't have to be as big as the lead next opened on the backstretch but it has a lead that lewis is. Does this brilliantly as well and you're going so easy and then you know everybody starts to ask they get close and as they get within reach you you let your horse out a notch. It that there is nothing that deflates the horse and rider. That are chasing nothing. Deflates them like that. I it just rips their hearts out and the the did it not once but twice and lots a credit. Lots of credit suisse swiss skydiver. Who ran a terrific race here and mcpeek happy with the way she gave out. I saw you know yesterday. Further comments and immediately afterward but she's gonna wheel back in three weeks and the personal where. I think she'll probably be a handful. Asmussen Looking to Win Preakness With Midnight Bourbon
"The phillies did it. Steve asmussen did it. He's done it twice. So far in the preakness stakes. He's looking for a third victory coming up later today with midnight bourbon. Who was one of just a couple of horses coming back from the kentucky derby to take a shot at turning the tables medina spirit earlier this week. Steve took time to talk with anthony. Moving times with rachel alexander leading up to the preakness but the moment i remember the most is when we walked out of the barn to walk over for preakness. I never been a part of a horse race. That that percentage of the public was on one horse inside.

Weekend Stakes Preview Presented by NYRA Bets
"The victory ride kicks off the stakes action here at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon grade three early in the caught has just the feel of five phillies. "It is finally here the world championships the Breeders Cup for the thirty six time and for the tenth time at Santa Anita it's time to handicap the world championship hip and for that we bring into our experts one we've had regularly and one for the first time we welcome back Ed Derosa of the brisket handicapping service and for the first time we bring in Molly Joe Rosen we followed her on twitter a lot it's good to finally bring her onto the show so again we said we're not going to handicap all of these races were GonNa pick the seven or so that we think have really good competition and will go with those and we'll start on the Friday card with the juvenile a race that has been diminished a bit with the defection of one of the early favorites Max field for Godolphin so we're really left with three big horses here to talk about Denis's moment the favourite eight rings and Scabbard Dennis's moment has been very consistent through his writer in his debut and then just missed a track record at Ellis Park can you really call a two year old and overwhelming favourite. What do you think here let's start with molly I think it's right open race I could not touch horse at eight to five not as you said not with two year olds you know making third and fourth fifth career starts I mean to me that just is crazy and I love him think he's phenomenally talented could wind up being the second coming of Secretariat obviously he's a freak of nature having won his to really his to start saying oh he's got that through the writer and the debut but you know he's one by twenty one lane I mean you can't knock a horse like that Dale is great with these types of horses he's prepped well he's looked great you know you take nothing away from him but eight to five in a eight Horsfield because not a MAC field scratch I can't touch a horse at eight five I do think it is a really wide open race I'm GonNa look at other horses you know take nothing away from eight rings also a horse who has done nothing wrong also worth who lost a job I do think a horse like scabbard for me is more interesting this is a horse who breaks his maiden by five then steps up and they had some has some learning to do and Eddie neely is great with these types of horses and I think if you're looking for price and you don't WanNa go towards one of the more so obvious sources for me a horse like Scabbard who's on the improve has really done nothing wrong in his career but you know seems to have maybe you have to overcome some some tendencies to find rebel trips of course to me like Scabbard is super intriguing? Ed What do you think well we're we're going to write off the rip because I'm all in on Dennis's moment and he's the only horse I'm using molly Jo Sung as praises appropriately and with the scratch AMAC's field unfortunately is is backers aren't even eight to five now so if that wasn't good enough for you Molly Joe I'm sure you're not gonna be happy with even money or six to five but the this horse You know the maiden win at Alice just blew everyone stores off so what can you say super professional in the Iroquois though defacto second career start I read got a handle for this horse got to test drive them so to speak and we've seen Dale ship out to the who've no at Santa Anita perform well with not this time it was second do horse I had a lot of respect for classic empire so I think he's early the horse to be an in a very competitive Friday car he's my big single day I'm with Molly I think scabbard had some trouble in finishing second today this is moment in the Iraq war and I think it's GonNa come down to those two I'm not discounting Dennis as moment but I think scabbard has to be more seriously considered than five to one lead move to the filly and mare sprint I'm really torn here about cafe when we get to the Saturday card I mean she won the Edgewood and the Miss preakness so maybe I'm not as impressed as other people are by the way she runs ed can she run her race from the rail She can for me either the bigger question and the rail is a question the bigger question is is shipping out west and she is not coming for a bar and that is it's been out there very long Dale with Dennis's moments that we talked about shipped out about a week ago see Asmussen's been there with his crew for seven her week so I am eager to see how horses on Friday to that hadn't chipped in versus the ones that have been there awhile local horses etc if I perceive a bias in that regard that might sway me offer as the favorite I will say on raw talent I absolutely think she is the best filly in this field for test was incredible energy titan or Churchill albeit against lesser was what you would want to see he coming into a race like this offer race like the test so I'm a believer but keeping an open mind and this is one of those cases where I am going to use information as it becomes available throughout the Friday card to see how liberal liberal I wanNA use her on Saturday molly what do you make of come dancing I'm not saying how do they poll she's got two and a Half Lake leaving don the destroyer next toward the inside at third special relativity first half of the year then the second half clearly has talent what do you make of her you know she's obviously you know a a really really lovely horses cool to see Carlos Martin on the big stage I I've known Carlos a real long time and he's just a phenomenal horsemen and She did have you know crazy good first half of the year her her win margins were certainly bigger flashier there was certainly more space there but running second to midnight visa in the VIPs you know other than that she's comeback her ballerina was beautiful her gallant bloom was beautiful I do worry a little bit about whether or not she can run in a straight I'm and that especially at Santa Anita we've seen over the years what was her name the Philly that ran second to beholder in the the distaff I wanNA say executive privilege we've seen horses who may not be able to run in a straight line not get there in time Santa Anita in the past and that concerns me a little bit when you do have other really consistent Phillies in here like FFA ed do you see attention long shot here in this race because I'm not loving come dancing I liked but don't love cafe what about dawn the destroyer will become a from the back and I guess you were saying you gotta see the Friday card to see whether anyone really can close at Santa Anita but what do you think about a long shot here that's actually and afterward oh so is this a matter where if you don't like the two favorites you chuck them and use them all I could see that as a strategy especially if you really where let's move to the turf to the mile not the dirt mile we'll get to the dirt mile let's go to the Turf Mile and here you've got to Phillies the headliners got stormy and Uni but now you've got circus maximus with a real European threat here it's not been the best year for eight and O'Brien really do you trust circus maximus here not in any way shape size or form and not at that price just in case you're wondering if I

Rich Eng Talks About the Potential of This Breeder's Cup Due to Changes in Play
"There is rich good morning good morning I rich Eh. This was going to talk about the official for this Breeders Cup because of the way Santa Anita's playing and because they've kept track slow you know trying to equate it goal you know when it comes to the main track how decided edge are you gonNA give them next week well that's a really good question because neither track is a lot different now than it's been in years they've really slowed it down it's a lot deeper I thought we saw kind of a little taste of how a shiver might handle the different track is seeking the soul it come out to southern California not do well and I think a lot has to do with the track surface but I've noticed some of the trainers have opted to come out really likes Steve Asmussen and some others and I think that's a smart move the acclamation oh even if they don't get a full blown work but at least Allah on a consistent basis each morning over the track has got to be a help in getting these choices used to the deeper surface and so that's a great question in my mind is going to definitely play as one faction when factor and Randy Kevin and the the Asmussen early you know early move out there I thought was was pretty telling and in the when I guess it was what probably four years ago maybe when asked listen sent Scott Blasi out for a winter and tried to establish a beachhead and of course the the racetrack wasn't necessarily the same way then but I think the I struggled a little bit and the fact that the fact that they went out early like this is to me is notable and you know obviously midnight be sue and Matola or the you know are the are the principal stars but yeah there's plenty more they got the baby seizes well that shoplifted for instance in the juvenile wicked whisper for the girls race so they've got a they've got a strong hand that they they bring out just it's GonNa be the other issue when it comes to trying to decipher this rich on Friday you know you always you always looked what the track is doing on Friday to maybe make some interpretation for how to approach Saturday but in this case dealing with the oval races the two you know you've only got those two and obviously there's not gonNa be any any east coast horses participating in the golden in state races so you really don't you really can't count on the juvenile performances as necessarily of a gauge on what's going to happen Saturday juvenile's the juvenile's could misfire for all kinds of reasons well you know that's certainly a possibility in order to jumps off the page to myself and a lot of people can get juvenile day the stars in the Future Day is a dentist moment he has been working so fast that I you know I quite frankly I'm salivating the white he can do next try I certainly hope Iran's oil because that would be exciting if he's able to run a big race could create a national natural eastwest kind of like competition with Bob Baffert eight rings who seems to be possibly the best our west and then this moment back east and we always like like rivalries and this might be one step the first step of maybe these two meeting multiple times from what you've seen so far we had dictum earlier Steve asking just spent an hour we mostly we spent a good half hour on the on the classic what are you your initial impressions talk about hours you know like that we wanna see not only what they do in the Breeders Cup but then and look forward to three year old season and that's one of the real appeals of of the juvenile card on Friday what other horses what other spots rich are you initially focused on and particularly eager to get the fields drawn and a start to make decisions in my mind I think the most interesting angle that certainly will get played up a lot is the decision of Bill Mata enter a late first preference in the classic I've been reading a lot of comets and social media there's a lot of people who don't think that was a good move but I certainly would not the question anything that the bill sites you do because one is in the hall of fame already and I will never be and the two is sure he is thought this through and in bounce the idea off a lot of people in his circle of advisers and friends and well he did not come to a decision like this early so I'm really interested to see how she runs You know the last time we had the philly slash mayor running the classic was of course the Great Sin Yada and you know her resume speak for herself I I don't think anybody questioned her I at least I hope they didn't question her running in the classic twice you on one year and then got beat the head by blaming the second go round but you know I think this is a good opportunity for me right because this is not in my mind one of the most talented classic fields that we've seen down the pike it's a good group but I think if you look at the figures going back on a lot of the horses at rendered I mean they're good speed figures but they're not great speed figures any late depending on your sources either consistently can consistently run with them on her best day or did not that far behind in proven factor she's three for three going a mile and a quarter so you know in the last furlong or two and some maybe gasping the hope is that she'll be just come out like a like a Azzam tank and the stretch and I would be real interesting if she could upset that growth so that's my number one choice as far as interest well in fact you earlier this week you wrote a little piece kind of looking at some some price potentials and some some more says that you've already thank that you you might WanNa bet on late was was a big focus affect the you started the discussion with her what other what other prices have you have you just been kind of tracking you know knowing that you know once the fields got assembled the you would probably utilize well I could go back Act that the store I did ready for America's best racing website in the I focused on three space limitations kind of parental from going much deeper but I will as we get into the coming days but the second horse I listed is actually a fairly high marquee horse from the trump the crown the season is improbable for Bob Efforts I think people who watched his race in the Pennsylvania Derby the last time out the horse activist open the starting gate again I I don't know what exactly causes it I'm sure Bob Baffert is has been trying a million things that try to remedy the behavior situation in the but the horse got off slowly and then the made a huge run to get into the race and the only lost by a length and a quarter length and a half in the blanket finish at the wire but he's writing and entered in the mile I think it's a really good spot for them I know there's GonNa be a lot of high profile case the date you're going to be above him but you know thing that happens in saying the neither sometimes you get a little too fast paced especially or she's that are used to running twenty twos and forty five you know they they may not be able to relax as much as the connections would want and set up a fast pace and double and everything I read about him that's been training brilliantly for Baffert so I thought he would be dangerous pricewise I think he'll go off at a higher odds and people might assume because there's some other horses like money and if he behaved himself Steve and brings his game I mean he's your horse I'm looking at it the hopefully usually Christ you know I it the one thing that that and he was my derby pack and and I've been a fan of his literally from day one and I was at La Salle for the for the futurity baffled in the dirt mile with this kind of horse I think has been I can't recall top of my head if you know that that he's had much success with this to be honest

I mentioned being a native of Puerto Rico one of the jockeys who mentored you when you came here and one of the people that you looked up to is his hall of Famer Johnny Velazquez who last week set the record for most greatest stakes victories by jockey in the history of the sport and that has to make you very proud. I know that yeah yeah we are happy about it and it keeps going throwing you know hopefully he can give winning some more on winning out much again until you know until heater dyers what makes him so good then you got a lot of these. Atlanta for the sport and I think that having taken to the next level where he's been for awhile you know yeah he certainly he's been doing it for a long time and still doing it at a very high level. How many great stakes victories are you behind him now. I don't know I have made the way to go yeah one day well that win yesterday and the Phoenix was impressive. This is a horse. You've you've been on before you knew him. You get back aboard him yesterday and he's able to hold off Whitmore who was putting in that late run. Take me through the race Jose. Well we broke. We broke very good. expect expecting a much faster pace but they did in in came out of five dollars. I thought they would and I was able to be closer than I than I thought. I was going in two weeks so I think that well We have a very pain trip when I ask him to. Well what they're for me the whole time. You know he's a horse worse by intimacy if that when you were riding him last year and even this year at Saratoga he was trained by Chad Brown now he's trained by Steve Asmussen. Ah when you were riding him before he was always knocking on the door but he couldn't quite get past horses like promises fulfilled you yesterday you beat him and everybody everybody else. Is there a difference. Did you feel something different now with engage than you did last year. He always been a ah very nice or worse. I think some more mature before others on. I think he'd take a while but I think he finally figured out you know. Did you know that Moore was gaining on your yesterday. I didn't knew what Whitmore Kabaya fell somebody coming out. You can tell yeah I could yeah. Did you know you had enough left in the tank. He very game he always has been and I knew what GonNa try but you know something this all horrors you know he's just turned four so there's all live orders season and they are very good. In the Phoenix was part of a Multi Win Day on opening day of Keeneland then you you've had several days in your career where you've won multiple races like that. I asked you what makes John Velazquez so good. What makes Jose Ortiz so good. I don't let somebody out of that. Answer that question. I guess right to be myself on gave that horses the best chance to win but you also worked very hard I mentioned you're out working in horses this morning. I know you're being humble and and that's what's part of makes you part of. What makes you so good but Jose you work your tail off and put me the in in the saddle with you for minute if you will if I can use that term take me through like your routine in your approach to riding races. How do you get ready to go out there. Every day and ride was everything star on the when the overnight comes up so I have to see we shorts on on quantum there I go the R F and and they got the raises and I put him whatever I think they should be and you know I have to talk to a trainers on and follow their their instructions but at the same time I want to I want her to be relax and that's that's what I try to be happy and I think they control and relaxed. We'll give you a running the end of it yeah you know. Johnny will always tell tell me about his different plans that he has going into the starting gate the plan a plan b the Plan C. and you hope you don't have to get any further than that but once the gates open you can listen to the trainers instructions all day long but once the gates open things can change quickly right very quickly. What do you you do at that point. Do you say Oh my God. I gotTa follow his instructions or do you say I just gotTa. Let my instincts takeover in and try to ride this race the way it needs to be ridden now so you've got to let your instincts they over because it's very tough to execute a plan when their plan doesn't work from from the gate you know. Yep You gotta change everything so I think you just gotTa Julia uh-huh. Yeah everything you could do everything changes in and you just have to adjust and that's why I've always said you know jockeys in terms of there's always that debate are jockeys true athletes athletes and I think you know I've said for years but pound for pound jockeys the most gifted athletes that we find in all sports and I have no doubt about it and you're certainly right there Jose. Let's talk about the horses that you're going to be aboard today. You're in all of the great stakes races at keeneland which is to be expected matter of fact. Thank you might be riding every single race at keeneland today. nice to be in demand extravagant. Kid is a horse. You're going to be aboard in the WOODFORD stakes. That's is the first greatest stakes today. What can you tell me about. Extravagant kid very nice hard. I had the opportunity to ride him. One time before and we won he's doing very good very fox. Horse doesn't need to be on the late which is very helpful full on way like junkets. Today we think is very life so right to win all right and then in the next race in the TC a talked to me and I think I'm saying that name correctly but talk to me the horse. You're going to be aboard there. You've been aboard her. The the last two starts second last time out in the Press Kyle downes master stakes on September sixteenth. Tell me a little bit about her. It's very nice to write very easy last time. She has run very very very good. we are expecting seeming to or better than last two times. I think she got shut all right and then the first lady turn our attention there you go to the first lady stakes miss bad behavior for Richard. Balta says the Horse Year aboard. What do you know about her. I won on her Kentucky Down She got some sleep but he's he's also stayed on the race so let's see how they're they're in writing about her because she he doesn't need elite. Also g come come on. We gotta go pole so let a break and make sure shade in a winning position I during your yeah how much different is writing this keeneland turf of course then of course like Kentucky Downs Kentucky down says the undulating up and down configuration. How much different is it run getting more like we do every day. You know saying Kinda you you know over same thing by Kentucky different. Go Up and down left right so I think in Kentucky and it's all about the horse like it you WanNa be okay. It doesn't like nothing you can do about like well. Let's hope that this bad behavior likes the keeneland turf course later today in the classroom breeders futurity Max Field for Brendon. Walsh is the second time that Brendan will give you a leg up in a greatest stakes today. Tell me about Max field. You went on him last time out to very nice coat a win first time out very nicely actually that day a he was a speed favor drug. Nobody was coming from behind and he did which is very impressive to me so I think we have something here. We got very nice coats so hopefully put it together and stay undefeated talk to for to all right and the last one admission office This is a horse who you road last year but haven't been on them for the last four starts you get back aboard admission office and that is in the the shad while Turf Mile. Tell me about him. What you remember about writing him before is on very cool hope to ride very easy going on to be honest? I love him. I think we had a huge show the winds along really how come because I think he's is a nice source if their truck come from behind and here something other threats you about to rush these sorts. BEC- they're stretchy short here. I wouldn't have to we go. We got our loan stretching so I think it was the drug I mean he. He did alright at one eight zero. "Jeff Good Morning Good morning how you doing excellent and lots to digest. We've already talked to the J ribbon earlier this morning morning. I want to get your take on what went on about the racist we discussed last week including the the upset which I think is less shocking talking than people. The people are are feeling. It didn't seem upon further review that Mongolian groom was all that impossible well. He wants to me I mean I thought he'd run well but I I really I'd watch McKinsey working. I thought he was ready to roll. Oh and just looking at the form I thought that he would win and he he moved to the top of the stretch like he was going to pounce and then he kind of flat out and I I always had a little sense of doubt that maybe he wasn't quite amount of quarterhorse but this is only a mile and they and I was disappointed and I think Bob Baffert with two do I really was an he's made in announcement that he's going to replace my Smith with a writer that we don't know who's going to be. I'm sure all the the agents are kind of hanging around trying to throw their hat in the ring but yeah I mean I it was I mean it's it's just it's the nature of the game here. We've you see this happen a lot and perhaps the real the real important racist coming up a month from now but if you've you know food for thought as to whether or not the horse that we also at least I thought was the number one older horse in the country. is really that much better than everybody else and amount of quarter. I think it's anybody's game now fold in as well the the result at the Jockey Club Gold Cup and what did you think of the takedown and who do you favor of the two of them coming out west well. I'll tell you what that I I was kind of hoping that it didn't come down and even I thought the three year old is going to win the race going in and what am I ran well. I thought he I thought he had every chance to get by but it was a tough. It's tough to lose a race lightweight like way when push came to shove and unfortunately for her also did come to push he he hung in there I think both both of those are deserving the universal. I keep coming back to it because what can you say and then Sunday Paradise Woods and I ask you the same question that I brought up up with Jay and I asked Sadler too Sadler Sheriff's the other day if she runs that race of the distaff she's she's a major major player and I know she's a notorious in and outer but I thought that was a terrific effort it was it was accomplished under under pristine conditions sitting right outside a speed horse with nobody all rounder nobody in front of her nobody beside her with kind of like a workout for but she did feel the deal as she finished strongly and she earned a beyer speed figure that was something like eight or nine points better than they were not that that means anything but bottom line is she ran really well now whether or not she can do that again I don't know if he pointed out not exactly your model of consistency and I thought maybe your best days were behind her but boy did she work well and I I I yeah I mean you have to go. You have to think that going into the dispatch. This definitely has a legitimate chance I mean if she decides to show up with a game the thing that we're going to start talking about Jeff when when when I'm at clockers corner and and we're watching horses work and when we analyzed the the XP TV workouts leading up to the race between you and Millie Ah Zoe is going to be fitness levels and the one thing you're not going to have to worry about John. The sheriff's Baffert and Sadler is is fitness of these horses on that racetrack and that's going to be a huge factor and I'm I'M GONNA keep referring to the east coast horses that went to del Elmar for the Pacific Classic and God drowned on that deep surface and Steve Asmussen asked me to his credit with with tenfold he learned his lesson and went out early with Mottola because he is not gonna get caught on that element he wants his horses. This is ready to travel over that surface and it's going to be something we we really focus on and then I'm sure in the recap you know after breeders Peter Scott. It's GONNA come up well down. Mars is eat but it's it's not it's not any deeper than in Santa Anita where this is not the old Santa Anita track backwards you know three quarters in eight and change all all day long I mean you have to be did fit to run on. This track is deep. You just tiring you you have to train over it. I think I think it really helps and yeah I think it's going to be very important to to to watch the works and I I do think it's going to be a great advantage for horses to get in early and get a beast of one or maybe even to work over the drag your possible because it's it's not it's it's tough. It's it's it. It's deeper than New York and Belmont Park is I'm convinced of that and I know Belmont to be called the fanny and all that but this track is is big heavy. I mean it's the faith it's safe and that's why they made it so deep but you've gotta get through it and you gotTa. That'd be fit well. You know it's yeah I mean I I did do a couple of San Anita and I can give the a little bit of an insight today's tough but I like the Philly name swirling in the fourth race she's not the favorite averaged five to two zero six two five in there she's a late running turf sprinter that that I that likes attending through force and they're starting to run five and a half now in the first we've got a couple now they extended the shootout there so she'd found five furlongs on this course a little stripe and she was hitting the boy and running well but just running out of room now she goes five and a half and I noticed in the few couple of five and a half long since we've had so far that the closers have a better chance and she's she's good enough to win. and I think that extra half for a long we'll give her the edge that she needs so I'm looking at number two swirling in the fourth race to kind of heightened me over for that's my play play today. It's an okay car not a great guard but I think we can we can get some value there because she's not going to be the favorite it's excellent all right swirling today and Let's let's go to the weekend and obviously the steak the steak side of things Let's talk about talk about the city of hope I because it it it really is intriguing and I brought up with Jay earlier. Jeff the mixing and matching of older horses. I mean really veteran in six seven eight year olds like synchrony and Ohio and Bolo and catapult facing off against some horses that may be emerging What's your angle in the studio? It's really hard. I handicap this this race and I came up with about four or five that on their best day could win. synchrony is intriguing to me I think he's intrinsically the best of the group but he doesn't have a lot of tactical speed and going a mile on this course even though he's running the tool aww theoretically he could maybe draft into the mid part of the mid packing and save the nangle out and get through he tends to give himself a lot to do and I remember when he came out here for the CBS del Mar last November. The same thing happened. Do that was sixteen. He fell back. He he had some traffic trouble he got. That's where we finished. Fuller Ronnie finished thirty one but but he didn't get there so I I like him at five to one at synchrony shipper I I hope he gets the trip. If he doesn't then you can make a case for a number of these. I mean looking for fifteen to one shot number four on your program. Aziz restrained vengeance. He's GonNa get loose in the lead and if he does that he can be dangerous. TAT upholds training really well but he's form doesn't look all that well you gotta go back to the Kilroy Mile Back in March the finding good but at least it was over this turf fourth and he could pop up Sadler. He's five to one the raises a bunch of the race basically is is a bunch. That's a five to one shots hoping for good luck but I think maybe if he gets through synchrony can win I wanted to I wanted to like River Boyne off the lay off and then John White made him four to one and that that cooled my ardor well you know I looked at him him and he was a very good three year old and he hasn't won at four and haven't made a lot of progress at least according to his numbers and he goes from practice and I'm looking elsewhere. Let's put it that way you know a to go back to an angle from last week as that in fact Jay also came up with and Dash the other filled D'Amato player and here's able to do who the things that just seem to be running for Jeff at at least from what we saw last week while they they ran for a golden gate when he was leading rider up there and I talked to them for a number of years actually we had horses up there and he he wrote for us always felt that he was good enough but he was kingpin up there era and then he decided to make the leap and I thought it might be tough for them but it really hasn't he's really falling favor with the with the horsemen down here and he's a strong writer but he's a good rider as far as and dishes concern. He's coming off a nice win. Del Mar.. He's obviously never beaten this this group although he did run second Mendelssohn and his racing debut of that matters which it doesn't that was way back in two thousand seventeen at the Curragh but but he's he's he's developing. He's he's coming around and the way the model is going. I mean I wouldn't put anything past him and especially in a race like this in which really there is no standout and anything can happen so hey why not wanting to watch a couple of other thoughts. what do you make of this chance Salat Omaha beach matchup the very very different set of three year olds against elders in the in the sprint championship wells twelve sheds lots four to five in the morning line because he's not only the fastest horse in the race in terms of numbers but he's also look controlling speed and he doesn't even have to go that fast my my concern was and it's kind of happened in the Jerkins a little bit then I know that the inside part of the wasn't particularly hit that day but they kinda slowdown down twenty three flat forty five and and he's fast horse and I think you gotta use his weapon and I think going three quarters. They don't have to worry too much about you. Know saving reading anything so I I would suspect he'll bust out there and go. He had a nice breeze over the track. I think Navarro did the right thing by bringing them out early and breezy had a half and forty. He's seven and one third fastest at sixty five last week and he lied did it. The right way looked like he was relaxed like he got over the track very very well so he's going to be it really hard for Omaha Beach the rundown although I my theory about Omaha beach is that he's always wanted to be a sprinter and because he was so good and all the money's going long long that Richard Mandella kept running them wrong and why wouldn't he won the rebel in the Arkansas Derby any may have even able to win the Kentucky Derby had come down with the trap Levada brought his only sprint race of his career only race of seven that he actually sprinted
