"When Lewis and asio Lula da Silva, known universally as Lula, was first elected president of Brazil in 2002, it was a great plucky underdog story. Lula, who has a boy sold peanuts on the streets of São Paulo and had little formal schooling who worked his way up through Brazil's trade union movement and who had lost three previous presidential elections had claimed the big prize at last. And he made the most of it. Lula won reelection in 2006 and left office in 2010 only due to term limits, boasting a commendable record in reducing Brazil's poverty and consequently astonishing approval ratings. On New Year's Day, Lula was sworn in for his third term, but the Brazil that elected him and only just last October has changed a great deal and so has he. The country is more divided and more rancorous, a fury most picturesquely demonstrated by immense riots in Brasília earlier this month. And Lula is obviously older. He's 77 and since his first stint in the palacio del varada has endured both treatment for cancer and 580 days in prison on corruption charges later annulled. Can Lula do it again. What ideas does he have about Brazil at home or abroad that he didn't have 20 years ago? And where does he even start? This is the foreign desk. Lula's trying to weed out some of the supporters of Bolsonaro, but we have to recognize too that it did take the federal military to come in and quell the protests. What we saw in Brasília was the breaching of that divide between civilian politics and certainly the state police, military police, but also the military as well. And so I don't want to sound too alarmist, but clearly that wall has been breached into a certain extent. It's not that Bolsonaro is hard right in Louis hard left. As you know, he is very much a pragmatic, and that's why he was a successful president for his two terms. Of course, a few things here and there, you know, he was redistributing money a little bit more, but for business people, it was excellent years Brazil's growing so much. He's

Now inflows is the story in this most recent quarter. Tell us what to turn that around. Yes, we pleased result report for the third quarter we have seen inflows of 7.7 billion within the third quarter. It's of course with the backdrop of a difficult market environment that we're operating in and we continue to operate in. So very much driven by cash inflows in the third quarter. We saw outflows previously, we had seen those come back almost entirely nearly 18 billion of cash inflows. But outside of that, we look very much at the diversification across the asset classes and where else we can kind of draw in that income. And in addition to cash, we've also seen inflows in alternatives with continued to see consecutively actually for each quarter in 2022 with an inflows in alternatives across real estate across liquid real assets and previously also across infrastructure. So a good result for the third quarter, we're very pleased to report that cash continues to be very volatile, we've seen that come back in the third quarter, but really consecutively we're seeing strong inflows from alternatives as well. And that's what we very mindful of because that's very supportive, of course, in our management fee margin and in supporting revenues. "Brazil, the presidential race heads to a runoff at the end of this month after the far right incumbent president jair Bolsonaro did far better than expected. Luis and asio Lula da Silva, the leftist former president came in first, but did not win outright. He needed a majority and felt just a bit short. It was a polarized election between two men considered populists, one on the left, one on the right. NPR's South America correspondent Kerry Khan joins us now from Rio de Janeiro with the latest Kerry, there was a much tighter race than expected, so what happened? Two things the right in Brazil came out in big numbers and sent the race to a runoff and the pollsters were wrong. They were just wrong. Brazil's major polls had predicted the double digit win by former president and leftist Louis Sinatra Lula da Silva. Many Bolsonaro voters may have switched at the last minute or just wouldn't admit voting for Bolsonaro to pollsters. We don't know. He's just a provocative brash far right nationalist here. He rails against political correctness makes homophobic comments. He's criticized for bungling the COVID pandemic and under his tenure destruction of the Amazon rainforest is skyrocketed, but his base is loyal. They came out for him. Here's what she said. My daughter was so loud. We Brazilians love Bolsonaro as much as you Americans love Trump. Trump is a political ally of the president here who takes many cues from the former U.S. president, he cries fraud a lot and says the media lies and pollsters are wrong and last night he got to say he was right about the polls. Oh, what about the silver? What is he said about his performance yesterday? He spoke to supporters in a very subdued rally after the final vote count was in. The 76 year old leftist said he's prepared for the runoff and a chance to debate Bolsonaro one on one. He says the struggle will continue until the final victory for Brazil does still remembered here for his big government spending that really helped lift many people out of poverty and outright victory for him last night would have been a spectacular political comeback after its presidency. He was jailed on corruption charges in 2018. He was released from jail and later had his conviction annulled, but many voters don't trust him more as party. Now, the act of actually going to the polls Carrie, how did that go yesterday? And what expectations about the next four weeks are there leading up to the runoff? Well, very long lines in polling stations here in Rio de Janeiro. It's going to be a tense and intense next four weeks until the October 30th runoff. Brazil is very polarized right now. These two men have outlined very distinct plans for the country. Look, generally the poor went for da Silva and see economics as the main issue for them Brazil's economy is sputtering still after the pandemic, and Bolsonaro supporters generally are more well off and they really go for his family values, anti abortion pro gun message. He speaks a lot about the political left turn in Latin America, especially in places like Nicaragua, Venezuela, Colombia, and Chile, and if allowed to come to Brazil, he says the quote communists will erode those liberties and has he repeatedly says he's the defender of God family homeland and liberty.
