Officials: Many Haitian migrants are being released in US

"Asians have been freed into the U. S. on a very large scale in recent days according to one U. S. official who put the figure in the thousands the official who spoke on the condition of anonymity says many have been released with notices to appear at an immigration office within sixty days the homeland security department has been busting Haitians from del Rio to el Paso and Rio Grande Valley along the Texas border and this week added flights to Tucson Arizona a second U. S. official also speaking on condition of anonymity so as large numbers of Asians were being processed under immigration laws and not being placed on expulsion flights to Haiti the releases in the US were occurring despite the signaling of a mass effort to expel Haitians on flights to Haiti under pandemic related authority I'm Julie Walker

Read like what are you saying. Fucking guy. You're in a paris talking french to a a korean it makes it makes no sense Speaking of vietnamese and french Wanted to talk to you about how your history lessons going to do by the book so people don't know i bought this book. I haven't bought it 'cause my cousin finish that either. So it's fine. It's very very long. I i bought this book a nice fan who actually came and saw one of my shows although my set to the show jet recommended this book vietnam from earliest times to two now. And it's this whole thing. It's very dance. We talked about last time. We basically like we're learning like you know they. They they go all the way into. Where did the word vietnam from came from like a chinese word. Then there's word. South vietnam means southland of the south and when they mean that is like south of china. Because everything's like chinese centric because the region railway regions. That's so much sense it's crazy. We talked about this before. And you read the book and there's so much vietnamese things even though is all happened two thousand years ago. you like. See yourself on these things because you're just like yes. They love tattoos. They have short hair really into handguns. You know what. I'm saying like those kinds of things to me. This is me except now two thousand years later. But i don't know. I i was gonna ask you how your history lessons bought the book the book. Okay don't i will buy the book. I'll splurge on book out of us later in the month. I'll give one for my house in one for my trailers so that i can read other two bits. I'll read this book. I promise you. I promise are outside. It's okay it's okay. It's very very dense. The cannot be honest with you. I love reading very interesting. But i have insomnia. I don't know if you guys have you. Som- i haven't late. What like re own some real like every night. Now it's gotten better. I would say during the pandemic it was pretty bad i would. I would say like like every night at like three. Am wherever what what would happen. Is i would go to sleep. And i would wake up like i would go to sleep at like ten and i would wake up at like eleven and i would just be awake. Now we'd be awaken talk through three or four. And i'd be like i'm awake and i just couldn't sleep so they say not to go on your phone. Say not going your phone. They say not to sleep in your bed. They say. Get up and do other stuff. So what i would do. I would go and it didn't mean for this to happen. But i would just read my vietnamese book. Read it and now. Every time i look at it. And i'm like oh get real sleepy just warning you can leave began our own people my bad guys but this is like a fun little factoid. So i didn't know that about knob because dino that beijing and there's nanking right babe means in china's north at a non is south and also the way south in japanese and that's so fucking crazy. I never even thought. I never broke down the name like that. So it's it's it's even crazier because like the full name it like in there. You know the vietnamese people didn't call themselves vietnamese until very relatively recently but like the naming of it was like the land beyond the south. 'cause it was on the south. Yeah it was like man and you read the. I'm sure i've talked about this in the last one but like the chinese. We're so fucking advanced there so fucking advance. They were like you have to think about how we learn about. Romans and greeks the chinese were there to. They did all the same long further along. They were oh advanced. They were in contact with the romans they were. They knew about the romans. And all the shit they were so dominant. They had written language. They were writing all sorts of crazy shit when all the other cultures around that were just like. Hey we just discovered how to use ox as a farm animal. And there's like a chinese literally chinese diplomat whose like firing a rocket and writing poetry and shit and also all the language all. The stuff is about about vietnam is from that point of view of chinese writers. And they're always talking about yo. You gotta go to this land beyond the south. They got crazy ass feathers. The i love the things that they wanted from vietnam because it was a gateway also to malaysia. It was like the way the trade worked as like you can go to malaysia. And come back up through it you got you got your feathers. You got your rhino horns. This place is tight. You guys gotta go rhino horns. Yeah we think we there was a trade for it. I don't know exactly how it worked. But there was a trade for that going back and forth so that was like was up. That was our that. Was our jam. Your rhino that's like that's like we'd back then you know they tried shoot. Maybe it's more like viagra viagra back. Then you know you try to listen mike. You know me on the podcast. "One more sort of question just kind of close off this thing you know so. I mean the whole. The whole likes premise of the show. That is like you know how how i met your your your father your mother. Whatever do you ever. Do you ever do that story in your mind like for yourself. Do you ever think about like oh man. One day. I'm one of my. I have to tell my kids or or app to tell someone about you ever. Have you ever done that well. That's really it actually have. Never you know. It's because i don't think about having kids that often like my partner night if we do we would adopted. But we haven't really talked about it that much so i i haven't had a moment where i'm like. These are the things. I'm gonna pass to my children yet have you. That have either of you had that thought. I think that's actually very with think that i don't think i. I've never thought i used to watch that. Show religiously in college and it was. It was so big. It was soap opera and watched it with my my roommate. We were like super super into it. We loved it. But yeah not once that i think Like what would i tell my. I don't know that's that's weird bro. I can't even there's literally achieving show about it. it's a it's a major. tv show. What what are you going to tell you. Yeah i don't know i always think about. Am i going to be in the story. I'm ali their romance. You weren't you weren't there. I guess like sorry to please to the stories. I mean i met her. I met my wife longtime ago. But i guess i'll we've guys in okay so we met in college but hey hold on here. There was an eleven year old japanese boy in ohio. Okay what opinion that because he'll come back into the story about trove years later. Also there's going to be vietnamese lesbian okay. She's pennsylvania right. now put a pin in that. I have no idea how old she she could be. Four hundred forty. No idea just just a moment. Then we're going to leave her and she's gonna get on tv. Okay that's going to be a whole thing and then we're going to get into that universe. Yeah it's going to be very complicated story now by says as an outsider. I feel like hey. Maybe i'm giving myself too much credit. But i'll tell you what mike of course you got married and all that but i feel like all. That should happen before comedy. If that's correct like before comedy get serious for you. I see you know what i mean and in a weird way i feel like you met your wife twice if i may say..

"Kind of healthier space. So interestingly enough. I think a few years ago there was kind of this trend pushing the asian men to date black women. They kind of thought that this would be like a sort of solution to a lot of problems that they were facing Which i don't. I don't think i have a problem with that. That seems like a fairly like okay Direction to try to take things. I think they also though more destructively tend to say like. Oh there's a lot of discussion about how like a black woman are kind of you know seen as You know less desirable the same way as asian men. So why can't we talk about this in the same way. And i think what they're kind of forgetting is that the way that they talk about kind of lisa harassment and is just been kind of associated with harassment You know for the past. I mean at least online the past few years but It's been going on for decades from what i've heard from people. I've talked to actually want to read a section of your piece erin. The surge of violent attacks against asian-americans has over the course of the pandemic unexpectedly knitted together. Two different threads of what asians hate about progressivism empowerment of asian women and an emphasis on the experience of black people braided together. It's a kind of warped photo. Negative intersection -ality. I love that analogy. Could you talk a little bit about that. Inverse intersection analogy. I know we've been. We've been speaking of it already but that that section is really struck me. Yeah so i think. One of the underlying ideas of the suburb is that asian men in particular are kind of the most oppressed group of people in america. And they see this because they think they are Oppressed racially on the right. They see that you know white people they see as you'd be on the top and then they see on the left. They think that black people are on the top of a racial hierarchy. So they think that asians get left out kind of in that sphere and then they think that in terms of gender are also left out because they think that the left focuses too much on you know addressing kind of centuries of sexism by like you know trying to promote women in this world so they think asian men in particular are being left out because of these kind of two trends and they kind of end up taking that out confusingly mostly on asian woman rather than trying to confront like black people about it but yeah that's kind of where that kind of inverse intersection holiday comes from so as a person of color so often when we write about our communities in not the most positive light. We often get feedback along the lines of this. This is what you're focusing on like. Couldn't you do something else. Just because i mean there's the little representation and i'm curious as to whether you've gotten any feedback like that i would say. Yeah i mean you know the the idea that we need to address white supremacy first and then kind of addressed misogyny with community. I think that's a false choice. I think can do both at the same time. And i also think that you know i do take this like i do. Think about this very carefully. Like i'm not like you know running a bunch of pieces. About how like asians are bad all the time. But i think in this various case it was important enough because so many asian american women have been experiencing this for so long it kind of merited a deeper look at what was going on. So it's not something. I take lightly but i think in this case. I really did merit it. What something about the story that you think everyone gets wrong. I'd have to say that tends to get portrayed as like this kind of very small insular kind of sub right at that. you know. it's problematic but they kinda keep to themselves you know it's it's like not really a big deal. Why focus on this. And i think if that was the case i wouldn't have written this but i think because they so often harass asian woman and they take their kind of really toxic ideology beyond the bounds. The suburb it. That's why it's important. I think after this piece came out. You know a lot of acquaintances. That i've had kind of just working media asia woman just so many of them have said that they've had run-ins with them to like that i didn't even realize i mean i've been working on this for two years. I didn't even realize the extent of how many people they've kind of gone after so. Yeah i i guess i would say it's not really just like this some kind of weird subculture on the internet. It's like i mean it. Is this weird subculture. But it's it's way bigger than that. What is something you hope that people take away from this piece that the broader internet should learn from from discovering this community and getting to know them better. I think like the best reactions. I've seen to this piece our age woman online. Saying like you know this is what it means to be an asian woman online like. This is something that we had to deal with for a long time. And i think it doesn't get talked enough about and i think just realizing that this is like something that year kind of swimming upstream against as an asian woman is a pretty important to realize aaron. "Along those lines. Aaron what would you say the core tactics. This community uses to spread its ideology. Yes so they actually have like a whole wikipedia. Guidebook kind of thing set up on their sub reddit. Were they like kind of explain to you how to do this. So one of their favourite tactics is to create as i said like burner sock puppet twitter accounts so they explicitly tell users or members of the ready to go into google. Find pictures of decent looking. Asian men put that on twitter profile. And then just you know go ham on like harassing asian woman so like anonymity and kind of these burner accounts are a big part of their kind of strategy because they think that it makes it seem like their ideology is more widespread than it actually is and then another thing they like to do. Is you know of create these broader or sorry. They kind of create these More established organizations like magazines or nonprofits. Things like that that Try to lend air of legitimacy to the kind of movement they're trying to to launch into the broader mainstream. I love the specificity of like go into google images and find a picture of asia man to be but make sure he's good looking facial based specifically say decent looking. So i think ideas like it can't be unrealistically. Good looking like this needs to look like actual asian man that could exist. Aaron was there any moment in this reporting as you're sitting on your computer your phone scrolling through read it doing this research. That sort of was an a ha moment like the light bulb went off. Yes so at one point. They tried to crowd fund a porn shoot featuring asian men on the ideas that we can get more asian male porn actors kind of in the industry. This'll spread this kind of image of asian male virility masculinity. And i think like on that on its face. That's like not a horrible idea. like yeah. The degraded there more asian men and porn but the way they went about it really kind of hampered the reach that that initiative could have had so basically. What they did was they tried to. The plot of their porn shoot was to have an asian man have sex with a white quit streamer. Who's trying to get back out. Racists online who are kind of blaming her or kind of vilifying her for an asian man and that kind of that. Storyline is a very thinly veiled at tation. Something that's actually happened to a white streamer who has faced awful harassment from Trolls for dating and asian man. And i think that kind of myopia they just don't realize how this is going to affect the woman that they're portraying women in general kind of really kind of hampers. They're they're kind of initiatives to kind of make asian. Men's be seen as more kind of sexual so that kind of just made me realize that some of the things that they're kind of grasping out or some of the problems to realizing in american culture are real but just their singular focus on those issues is really problematic and not really getting them in the allies. Basically for all that. This is a story about a group engaging in online harassment which we've established we hate that. Don't do that. The core issue of this group though is the racism and stereotyping that asian people face in american culture. And that. that's a fucking real issue. How do you think this group's ideology got so warped. Yeah all the people. I spoke to for this piece. People who have been harassed who have been harassed. There were very intent on saying like these issues are real at least to the extent that asian culture tends to de sexualize asian men and portrayed them as timid. Generally asians are disadvantaged in a variety of aspect sectors in american society but the way that they're responding to it by taking it out on asian woman is you know unproductive not healthy and just causes a lot more pain so i think i walked away from this peace not thinking that these people are like irredeemable in some way in fact like towards the end of the piece i talk about. There are some discussions kind of asian facebook groups about people who have previously kind of ascribed to the men's rights asians ideology mostly in their teen years and then realize that you know this is really not helping anything You know maybe seeking solidarity with asian woman and other people of color would be the way to go so i think that they are responding to you know real kind of racial trauma and racial issues in this country. They just the way that they're going about. It is You know just really harmful and curious as you're researching the story as in asia man yourself if you found yourself sympathizing with any of this so i would say that i understand the feeling of feeling kind of undesirable and kind decentralized. I think that if i had found this forum when i was a teenager like that very well could have been something. I would have been kind of at least curious about if not kind of seduced by. I think that he tend to spend a lot of time. These spaces just becomes. I can see how that could happen to someone. They definitely take it to an extent that is like just way out of bounds and his extremely harmful to people around them. Something that's always interested me and they always interested me when i heard you were doing. The story is that the centering of lack of romantic prospects in this kind of world presents. A kind of interesting parallel between the online experience of dating is an asian mandating as a black woman. I think the statistics on dating apps are actually fairly similar in terms of like the hierarchy of desire and. I'm curious whether that's ever acknowledged in these spaces. And if it's not whether you think that kind of solidarity building might create a.

A yale undergrad but the name of eileen hong wrote an open letter warning about quote unquote rampant anti blackness in the asian american community. That could bring violence against us. All i was just really driven to talk about a lot of what was happening in the asian american community. I think anti blackness is something. That's really deeply rooted in my community in chinese american communities. But it's also subject. That's very taboo. So a lot of people tend not to talk about it or you know nobody likes to talk about how they've heard other communities or their own flies so it's really not a conversation not really happens anywhere what could have been met as a really important crucial sentiment instead for eileen meant she was harassed aggressively frighteningly by a subset of men on the internet known as men's rights asians. Eileen was the target of a pretty high profile on wave of attacks from malaysians. Kind of near the start of this year when the spike in anti-asian violence kind of caught media attention and a lot of 'em are agents. Thought that you know. She was kind of complicit in the violence that was happening against asians across the country because she had a reputation for talking about anti blackness within the asian american community so she was someone who had firsthand experience with this kind of wave of harassment. That aaron mac one of our colleagues and the author of a huge blockbuster investigation the result of years embedded in the suburbs called asian identity which is also the unofficial hub for group known as men's rights asians. One thing that continued to come up during his reporting is the tie between this group an anti black racism. I think prior to this year. Men's rights asians mostly focused on asian woman. Who are dating her. Have it'd white men in the past this year. They started focusing on black asian relations. Mostly because as i said there's a spike in attacks against asians across the country and a lot of the videos that have gone viral from those attacks have happened to feature black perpetrators not to say that this is a a mainly black phenomenon. And there's no there's very little proof that black people are primarily responsible for these attacks but they have taken those very viral videos to kind of blame. The black community for the violence has happening asians and generally they've been kind of resentful of black people because you know progressive's rightly focused on the black experience lack people face like a you know a lot more systemic racism than asians or other other people but they think that that is kind of unfair and that asians should really be focused on among the progressive left. What exactly is the sub reddit. Our asian identity. Where did it come from. You just got into a little bit. About what the grievances of that group are but so much of this is coming from. Read it so. I would love if you could talk a little bit about the community over. There are asian identity was a suburb founded in two thousand. Fifteen is kind of an outgrowth of a very notorious anti-feminists. Men's right suburb at called Are the red pill which as you probably know was known for rape apologia and just kind of gentlemen's rights hardcore men's rights activism so some asian members of that sub read it kind of branched off to make their own series of sub focused on asian men using the kind of red pill lens and will the future iterations of that kind of branching off is our asian entity and they've kind of grown in the last like five or six years by tens of thousands of members and they're now like this you know kind of unofficial hub of men's rights agents on the internet. Could you kind of explain what the differences or if you think. There is any difference between the kind of political ideology of the original kind of red pill insult forum and asian identity. Like do you see any kind of shades of variance between them. So they've made efforts to kind of distance themselves from the men's rights movement at large the mattis fear. According to a researcher i talk to is largely because read it has really cracked down on red pill forums like are the red pill right now is quarantined which means it's hard to find in search results and everything so they've kind of clean their laying quarantined. Yeah they quarantine on reddit hang much so yeah so basically. They tried to clean up a lot of like the kind of outward signs of red pill ideologies so they don't use words like cock anymore. But i think a lot of people. I talked to would argue that. You know the the roots of what they're arguing about and what they think are very similar to thoughts that are ideologies that are the red pill is trying to disseminate into the broader culture. I don't think they would say that. They believe that they wouldn't say that. In such explicit terms but a lot of what they argue and a lot of the harassment that has been connected.

"If you live on the east coast of the us especially in new york or pennsylvania and see a visually striking spotted lantern fly. "Hello and welcome to another dish. They call us bruce. An unfiltered conversation about what's happening in asian america. I feel you. And i'm jeff yang and once again we have a fantastic guest on this episode. Somebody who's an old friend of ours over the podcast. And who has just evolved into one of those interesting attorneys filmmakers creators actors writers in the business of asian american filmmaking and that is justin chon who has a new film coming out blue by you which we have seen and i'm just so deeply my feels. I just. I q much to talk about that. I can almost like talk Welcome welcome to the show. Welcome thanks guys. Thanks is so great evac back on with you guys. You know. I just first off. I want to say that this has been some kind of a ride for asian americans. You know There was a time when felt like we couldn't tell any story is truly not them the way we wanted them to and when we did they had to be a certain kind of story over just the last a three four years. We started more idiosyncratic and yet really masterful new kinds of of narrative exploring explaining and just giving experiences around very different ways of being asian american and blue by us is right up there In in that world of like the minorities so just wanted to give you props for that and maybe ask bit. What the origin story in some ways of of this film. Was you know what i mean. You know Being asian american we all know. Adopt these you know it's I'm sure we all know that. Adoption originated the idea of international. Adoption originated in south korea after the korean war. And you know the whole family went there and the kids off the streets or whatever the case that needed families place a nice christian families in the united states and over the years become a big business in and you can't tell an asian narrative that's inclusive without including that storyline Without including that experience in this in this country So you know i. I'm friends quite a few adoptees and and I've grown up with few. And i started hearing that this was taking place at adopted. These were being imported in. I thought it was absolutely shocking.

"I hear that the energy at your rallies of course. I spoke at one of them but You've got really big rallies. The energy is analogous to a trump energy. I think that's right Dentist i have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm. Men coming up to me crying saying thank you for saving california. Thank you for doing something about the crime. Thank you for doing something about the rise of homelessness. Thank you for doing something about the way this man shut down the state to the point. Dennis where a third of all small businesses are now gone forever. Many of which were only by black and brown. Asian american people. I only mentioned their race because people like avenue some themselves on caring about people like that And then i hear from women. Were telling me finally. I'm going to be able to have a choice. I can take my kid out of an underperforming government school And put him into a private school or charter. School or private school or home schooling. This is the kind of stuff that i'm hearing. And if i'd never ever imagined that it would be this kind of reception to my entering this race. I know. I know you didn't glow could you. You're just you're not an arrogant man to begin with so i. I have no doubt that this is taken by surprise and well-deserved by the way the smear campaign against you. Which is something i am used to reading about about anybody who was ineffective conservative. I'll give an example aside from the black face of white supremacy which should have rendered the author fired by the los angeles times but An example. I think i don't know if it was the new york times or or or wherever that you don't believe there is racism in america. Yeah well of course i. I've never said anything. Of course is is what. I've challenged that business about whether they're systemic racist The idea that the police are pulling people over in using voice against white people just because they're black that's been re the study. It's nonsense is what the left does to divide america to scare black people because they convinced a large number of black people. Dennis of that social justice is the primary issue in america. Not quality of schools not crime. Not where the nacho able to get a job and so they do this because they want to try and get that monolithic lactoferrin which they cannot survive at the presidential level.

California Recall Update with Larry Elder

"Larry how's it going out there in the field in california. What i think is going well The as you pointed out i clearly have the reality on the replacement side based on is whether or not percent plus one votes voters in california both to recall gavin newsom. And it's my job to remind people white. Nearly two million people signed a petition. Charlie to get this guy out of here. Almost a third of them were the very people that voted for him just two years earlier and by that i'm talking about independents and democrats. I should even at hispanics. Sixty three percent of hispanic voted for him two years ago. And now the majority of hispanics want him out largely because gavin newsom shutdown public education and before he sat down public education a kids educated in our government schools. Were already behind our scores near the near the bottom of all fifty states where we spending fifteen thousand dollars per student per year and not getting sufficient bang for buck. He also shut down the state to the point where a third of all small businesses are now gone forever and many of these small businesses were owned by black and brown in asian american people. The kind of people that people like avenue some pride themselves on caring about and so so larry. This is something that has now become a national kind of issue. The california recall and gavin newsom is very nervous and he's largely nervous because he has a formidable opponent in you and the message that you are bringing forward and you kind of set the entire american kind of political community on fire. And you've saved so disciplined. I just want to say they've tried to trap you in so many different

What Are the Newsom Recall Polls Saying?

"Hey everybody. Welcome to this episode of the charlie kirk show with us. Today's a friend of mine and he's rarely ever wrong. In fact we had him coming on our program leading up to the election and he got almost all of his predictions correctly. Richard harris from the people's pundit and also we had you on for the georgia thing and you're the one that early said. Hey we got a problem in georgia and you're right so we're going to talk about california polls and so all right richard. Let's cut through all of the nonsense. Yes the way. It works in california for all of our friends in maine and massachusetts and florida and south carolina. It's a two part question. Yes or no recall gavin newsom and if yes then who let's start with the yes or no. Do you think that the yeses are going outnumber the nose. Yes we pulled it a couple of weeks back and we had no ahead by a little bit charlie. But let me leave this with you. The caveat here is that. I thought my share of the you know is part of poland. I thought my share of the white vote was a little bit high california's usually forty five fifty percent tops and did see other pollsters. That had him in the sixties. If you look at who's voting right now. This is why democrats are nervous. The electorate is very white. And it's and it's much older so if if the electorate and we had them at fifth we whites at fifty five but we still had the age breakdown to be pretty young so that could a two point advantage could easily be swamped demographic difference like that the problem newsom has then i was just saying this before he needs white liberals and asian voters to come out and they are the least likely to want to vote. Weitz were over. Eighty percent certain to vote when we pull them And asia voters were in the fifty s. So it. I mean it really. It goes to show you got a close race can turn into a nailbiter either way

Equity Monday: Women's Employment Drops

"Goal. Stock markets are mixed. Asian markets are on the rise. Europe markets are slightly down and the us stocks were somewhat fought value of crypto currencies. Kind of looks the same. We saw some tokens and cryptocurrencies off. A few points this morning but not enough to start an entire twitter debate. The mixed feelings could be due to a lot of things first. Traders are back from the kitchen and analysts. Always have a ton of thuds. Some people think it's inflation some set. It's an upcoming european central bank meeting. But what i want to focus on is a less than ideal jobs report ready. Let's go. I'll start with the good news. We learned that in august overall unemployment declined to five point. Two percent from july's overall employment rate of five point four percent zero point two percent but i will take it because that represents a lot of people that now have paycheck coming in to their mailbox. That's kind of where the good news stops. Though this report we learned that the us economy added only two hundred thirty five thousand jobs in august which was a sharp drop from analysts expectations. But even looking at july's total which was nine hundred forty three thousand jobs to make matters worse fortune actually dig a little deeper and looked at the national women's law center. They say that women only accounted for eleven point nine percent of those jobs in august again. If you look at july women were sixty eight point eight percent of the new jobs. It's your reminder that we aren't back to pre pandemic level employment and that women are disproportionately leaving a now reentering the workforce at alarming rates.

"Marvel's new superhero movie shanxi and the legend of the ten rings is running rings around the competition this weekend. Npr's bob mondello has more. Hey it's a marvel movie. There isn't really any competition but cianci is doing much better than expected. Marvel's first asian superhero kicked his way to a nearly thirty million dollar opening day in north america. That suggests a three day. Take about sixty five million. The previous record for labor day weekend is less than half that. It's time to show the world who i really am. All of this comes with caveats. Labor day is the year's lowest grossing holiday which makes breaking records easier and as big as these numbers are they don't quite match marvel's black widow for midsummer still black widow had a home viewing option from day one so it dropped quickly in theaters. Shang cheese expected to keep kicking for awhile. They won't be streaming until mid. October bob mondello. Npr

"In modern times. Singapore wasyl is a global poll handing everything from kogo to passengers. What singapore all of his historical importance to the languages. If so when did it become so or was a focused mostly on trade slash kaga. That is a great question and it's not an easy question I mean this is relatively simple straightforward answer But it's one that requires a little bit of context as well. So singapore Was is as alex says very important port and nowadays will up until pre covert you know we kind of saw as a portrait world cruise ships would pull into There was obviously local crazy. There's been local cruising resuming in singapore with with dream cruises not something but You know historically the line. Voyages in the end the passenger ships that used to operate in this part of the world weren't just passenger ships. They were cargo carriers as well. So the the linas. This isn't an arab with thinking about the era prior to the nineteen fifties before jets before containerization of congo. The ocean liners used to be the primary mode of Of of large-scale cargo transportation. Along with things called tramp steamers which you'll see us to carry basically just goes and then i had combination line as well which was small compliments passages and large complement of cargo but the majority of the cargo travelled by ships that also traveling with passengers and in many cases the males as well because that Postal service was the the the subsidies where the backbone of the shipping lines in the early in the early days all the way up until the age of the jet so for singapore It it was an important port for multiple reasons kogo and and Mayo notwithstanding also for passengers because the singapore obviously with at that time was part of the british empire And so britain had connections into into singapore and for example would operate into singapore And also into other major asian ports from their hub in In the gulf of suez and then later when the suez canal was cut through they they obviously do the direct voyages that would go through from the mediterranean under originate in great britain.

"Whatever and jessica. I feel you were mentioning that. There is a difference between asian stories. And i don't even. I don't know if hollywood understands this yet. But there's different between agents stories and asian american stories right and you know those are those are different things. Yeah yeah because thematically like we care about different things and also. Our relationship to representation of ourselves is different than they have in. America like an asian american audience like we. We want to see stories that kind of reflect our our experience but also our relationship to our heritage and whereas like that's completely uninteresting to people in asia because there are like what the fuck it will tell you about like. They don't have that issue with exploring their heritage and what their relationship is to their heritage into their culture you know because they just live and exist as themselves as the dominant majority who've never had any sort of problem with representation. All of their stories are their stories. Yes whereas for us we're trying to eke out slivers representation for ourselves in this greater span of like western media and that's something that they don't understand which is very frustrating for me. Because it's like i understand you understand me. You know what. I mean and that sort of thing you know. i'm. I'm not trying to necessarily you know shit. I'm not shitting on any asian stories. Those are cool stories to. I'm just saying that like there's also our stories and should be. There should be fine if you got if you got there are hot. Chinese dudes mean. Who's who's who's who else is in. Change tony young. Isn't it yeah. He's amazing. I love that guy great. And he's a legend. And i want him and i want all these Asian american actors to so. I'm not trying to restrict. I'm trying to expand like sort of the range different things and to your point jessica. It can be very frustrating. Because you you sometimes think that maybe that asian people from asia would be on our side but they're not hundred sometimes so we're not the same and that's the problem. The problem is that hollywood is treating us like. We're all the same. I think that's what that's part of the reason why. Asian asia asians are bristling against. Because they're like. We're not the same as asian americans aren't and there's acknowledgement different by by white hollywood because hollywood is like look asians. There's asia you look a look at your own. Hollywood twenty like you know if they could if they just acknowledge if they were look guys. This is an asian american story. And it's four. Asian americans made by asian-americans like that. Would i think that would go a long way in asia not feeling patronized because that's the other frustration with with people in asia is that there are like. Do you think it's insulting for you to think that we are so dumb. Yes sad just seeing an asian famous enough for us to buy into your movie right now. Like that's insulting like we're not the same and you think that we're too dumb to not know that we're not the same as that person you know and also do you think that we're so dumb that we don't know that you only through that one asian actor for ten minutes because you think it'll get our mighty chinese dollar. We're not dumb. We're actually intelligent people and it's very insulting for you to think this you know when someone tries to like scam you. But they're so bad at it now. I'm insulted that's how it feels you know yes. The problem is the way. Hollywood is acting about it like they keep acting like it's the same and and it's an entire group of people that are like you're lumping us in with people who have a completely different experience and relationship to this culture than we do. Yes yes and to your point it. It's a disservice to on both sides. It's a disservice. Asian americans ended the service to to agents. I think you're right. Things will come out and say hey we got this guy here and there will be just like well just because they kind of look like me doesn't mean this is not serving what i need like. Look this is this is the oppressor favorite game which is a pit the minority groups against each other now the now like asian americans in asia and asia asia. Asians are fighting each other. Rather than trying that i s hollywood right and i'm i'm not yes exactly instead. We're literally fighting over like cba lose. Abbas who fucking we're fighting for who's had okay we can all. Let's this is how why we should all. Just go back to the okay. We can all agree the grand eminem's hot this. What this all comes down to genius. You've done it. Do you think that this is like i feel like this is uniquely is an american problem. Because i don't ever hear like okay. Let's say okay. Take a movie like moonlight. You know we don't hear anything about how like okay if they just showed that the people from like i don't know ghana or something you know if they get upset like we don't hear anything like right they're never they're never like marking it towards conflict in africa because just because their skin color is the same right yes right. I think that's one thing that always pisses me off. Is that In the media to they. There's this idea that like people in agents who are in asia asian than us and therefore if they're not upset about it we can't be upset about it you'll see you see..

"Is fear us and we're back with everyone's dot and we've got a we've got a real with for for for this one. It's about shanxi. it's the movie that's coming out. We're all very excited about it and it's been going around a little bit you know. There's been some backlash with fans that are in asia. I think mainly chinese fans you know they have some questions about whether sima lou the right guy to play the good looking enough and the whole question about like you know him as a good looking guy i thought for some reason was very triggering for me because i think he's very handsome and he's my green eminem in other words and then we can. We got this. We got this. We've got this interesting email from a fan which this person this fan raises up a really good question that i think is something that a lot of a asian americans have thought about you know given media and i wanna read a little bit from this fan. This fan identifies herself as being. Someone of japanese descent lives. It has lived in america for a long time. It's a very long email but The question i want to ask you is why. Hollywood always hires the kind of asian people that are not attractive by our standards and i think by our standards she means asian standards as you may or may not know we like sharp pronounced facial features with a high nose bridge deep set eyes with double eyelets. I'd never thought about this on a small face. But most asian actors in hollywood have a flat pancake faced with flint. And this is a very racist email. Now that i'm reading it. I can't pancake. This person been continues to talk about You know crazy rich. Asians which didn't do well in asia for i think i think for for a number of reasons but i think there's a couple of topics here one of which is you know beauty standards right. I do think there is to that. And i kinda wanna just keep it. Open ended jessica. I've seen you nodding you know. I don't know where you want to jump in on this but there's a lot of different things i mean. There are very different standards in asia than an america and like And there's so many different issues when it comes to race for asian nations versus asian-americans because asian americans we have to. We're dealing with in a country where a quote unquote melting pot of all different races. You know and we are supposed to be one of everybody like we're all supposed to be american and we all come from different descents. So that's why we have a lot of issues when it comes to race relations and racial politics and things like that and those are issues that people in asia don't understand because they live in countries where the dominant majority and they don't have issues of representation and stereotyping themselves because they get to control their own. You know exactly you know and also but that's also different than the standard of beauty because you know in these east. Asian countries like again. It's the historical dominance of whites worldwide. Just rearing its ugly head again. Like all of the beauty standards in asia lake have are rooted in white supremacy. It's like a pale complexions. Argue that the sociopolitical one where it's more about like you know throws up white skin out in the fields and you had servants pampering whatever but i mean. We can't deny that that there's some sort of shirt supremos gruden at to you know though many like whitening skin lightening products. Things like that and they live all the features that are listed that they like are very western features. I s yes. You know high bridges which are not Which are not common for a traditional asian features. You know they don't like a big pancake phase or moon face but that is like the most traditional looking asian base like and also if you go back in history at least in chinese history like the like hundreds of years like the standard of beauty was like a big moon round moonbase so it really changed with like western dominance. I and i agree. I mean i always. I sometimes feel that when agent people from asia ceo. Why don't they better looking people they mean. Why don't they pick asian people that look like white people like we. Also we have. We've got you know like. I don't know if you've ever watched a kind of beauty pageants everybody. They just kind of want everybody to look white. You know and i'm gonna. I'm gonna call it out. I think asian people don't like asian faces. It's weird it's weird to me. I know for sure. I mean i know in japanese like we. We don't say pancake face but we say like european people have deeper faces and we'll have shallow faces and already it's like yeah it's like these are your own people. There's something weird happening with like asian people in asia. They can't get over this influence that they've had from their oppressors their colonizers but asian people in america. Like i think had that for a little bit. But we're like trying to do the work and like reverse that but for some reason it's not happening over there. I think that's the disconnect but also to your point like you look at like literally every like korean pop star. Why did they do the ice surgery. Why did they dye their hair. Why did you know what i mean like. I feel like the ideal person in asia is just like you stuff you stuff a white guy inside of an asian guy like that's the case that they want you know and totally. Yeah but i also feel like i. I'm not saying that. I agree with her language and stuff like that but i understand where she's coming from because as a diaspora population like your. We are east asian but we live in different continents. So it's not a surprise to me that there are different beauty standards whether it's influenced by what are not. i mean. we grew up in new york. You grew up around puerto rican people. And whatever and you're going to like. I feel like people in america love fat asses. That's a thing i promise you like. Nobody's over there. That's news for mainstream. that's true. I feel that you're totally right. I feel that there should there should be. There are going to be different beauty standards. But if you look at it again and again you would think that the asian beauty standard would beat someone who looks asian. You know right but then it's not or you go to. It's always a fair skinned. The person you know. Maybe it has to do socio politically but what a coincidence is always the same kind of thing. So i mean it. It is something. I think that you need to unpack the other thing. That kind of comes up as questions. About with crazy rich asians. I know that it didn't do well in asia. And they were kind of talking about the story. Didn't really resonate. Or whatever and jessica. I feel you were mentioning that. There is a difference between asian stories. And i don't even. I don't know if hollywood understands this yet. But there's different between agents stories and asian american stories right and you know those are those are different things. Yeah yeah because.

"Asian nice i mean yijin just basically got the residual like jokes that they had written for me and ask me more and luckily gin gin can jin can come back from doing before i was doing it. All righty you know. And i don't know that and they asked me back again this season and And i just. I don't to be honest. I don't know if like like a part of me. Feels like i should be on there. Just in case you know someone is roasting something with asians and like and they need somebody with the cloud bags right but at the same time apart and he is like you know. I think back on past seasons where we barely had any latino people. And i'm like i feel like if there's no one's gonna make latino jokes some like do i do. I wanna go back in and and put myself in this scenario where okay there might be potential like corona and like all that i just do not feel like dealing with every right right yeah And then but also part me is like you know and we're who who's gonna take the reins from me. You know what i'm saying. I really yeah. I want somebody i want somebody to step in and be able to handle that. I just realized man you know wild and out is for a lot of people you know. That's where a lot of cultures kind of mixed together. You know we've had a lot of different folks on there you are. It's kind of like in mortal kombat. We we send one champion to recommend you. Were that guy you send you. And you're doing your thing ripping people's spines out of their bodies and then you're just tired. I'm tired of doing this ripping you know who else is going to do it. You know that's the thing right. It's a lot of people. They don't realize that like when when everyone else is up there when the black news arose in each other. It's like they can talk. You know it's like it's a joke. Carlos is making fun of chico. Chico's making fun of carlos when they're coming at me they're making all asian off. I'm reading for my whole race of asia new which which was great. I felt proud to do you know. And and i felt like.

"Word asian people. It sort of started with covid right because it was china right and so they're just now starting to report on like asian hate crimes and they give these numbers that are pretty in line with any other hate cri- you know what i mean like. Yes any other crime. Let's say like twenty seven in the past two years and you're like i mean yeah and you really say that that's asian crime or is it just crime. You know what i'm saying. Yeah you and i were watching that story in the news the other night where they said it was a hate crime against an asian and we watched are there are. But here's the thing. We watched the video and it was somebody at an. Atm was an old woman and then it appeared as if a robber was grabbing her purse and then threw her to the ground and took off with a purchase rights but they were covered in a mask and some type of hat and whatever and so is she. I could not sell that. That was an asian person. And obviously and so you got to the hospital and sukkur massgov. Neither could you. I think in some of these situations like it's a stretch in. That's where you know you didn't know you didn't know that that was asian. I guess you could look back at it after the mask off and all that shit and determining but it would be hard in a lot of these cases before he. Here's what i'm saying like there are right. I can't imagine you have to think about the lowest common denominator so as you can imagine a for sure when trump says china virus and we're blaming all of this there's going to be some dumdum low levels that actually or crazy people whatever that actually do that and attack asian people. I just think they're attributing exactly that like robbery. And you know just crazy people crime to that as well. But i don't know i mean i i find it hard to believe but again i find a lot of things hard to believe because i'm thinking about how i would do it and you don't know there's fucking i mean you heard people talk. You think people are stupid right. Mostly so yeah. I could see it happening. But you know twenty-seven hate crimes in in a year. It's a lot but that's everywhere. Join three hundred thirty million people living in america. It's twenty seven. It's not that bad to be fair. And when i saw the location of these parlors last night the massage parlours last night. Being from georgia and immediately there was like asian. Hate or whatever it was like. That's not a place for hate. I'd be real curious to see of homeboy. Had actually been there quite a few times and then lost his shit over some type of sexual thing where he was. You know whatever and that kind of turned out it kind of turned out those what it was. He'd been to a lot of those places and frequent in them in the past and then snapped and said he'd never find love or some other weird shits writes. The other weird thing to me was whenever something like this happens and that immediately starts trending number one of stop asian hates then they have to find a famous asian in that city to make a statement usually like our great who'd we grab who is. Who's the most famous asian in atlanta. Who who is that. Yeah it was. The kicker for the atlanta falcons coup. What's his his last name as coup k. O he was on fantasy team. Make fits men young folk who young oku. That's it and i. He was the one who released a statement last night. Like for the asian community in atlanta and i was like the best we could. He was not that good for us. The first year he made the pro bowl last year but that was a real reach on that one in the city of atlanta and they were like man. Who'd i you know and that fucking meeting. They sat there. And we're like who do we got. Who's the most famous asian we got here in atlanta. Yeah shit. I think it's our kick. I think it's the kicker for the falcons. Maybe is that the one that we're going to go with an sure enough. That's what happened. And he made a statement. I'm here to tell you that we love people and i was unaware that there was like a lot of hatred towards asian people. Just i don't really. I've never really seen it in my life and i've lived in california many years as well as new york where there is you know high population of asians and yeah. I never really thought to be honest with them right. So when the story popped up. Yesterday i was like man. Let's wait for more of this to come out before we start saying this was a some form of. Hey i think it more or less had to do with a dorky. Longley white kid who could never have sex with the female in his life probably and took it out in the where he was getting massage from in the past but Yeah but shots a coup for being around there. I didn't know he was still on the team. Bob is he still on our roster this year. Busy zero kicker says yami. They're talking about him in the present tense. Okay great so i. I think he's only twenty six and unless he had a significantly dog shit year. I don't know why i mean he was. He was thirty seven and thirty nine on field. Goals aren't great you last year the year before as fucking disaster but he was twenty three twenty six year before really. Yeah he's all right. Fuck all right. Maybe i'll maybe i'll not lose a little more love dude and you know he's not he's not even making a million bucks so nice little salary cap kickers and punters don't typically I remember mcafee was but talk a lotta shit and you gotta get yourself known dead serious. If you're going to get yourself known out there you gotta get your name out there but all right shut up coup at those were stats shit. I guess he is our most famous asian from georgia. You know congratulations to that. James wanna talk about the stocks. James stocks are back. Amc.

"Me because it started dying laughing off of that and i was like there. You go there you go do. I hate white people. Yeah right whatever. Your shot is your irish car bomb. I'll i did it now. Clearly you know they're making cash off this or whatever so loaded up a couple irish car bombs. There at the establishment with homeboy had a couple of drinks and then went nine nine myself alarm. Goes off zoom. Call smoking now. That zoom is a thing right everybody everybody now and it's they want to see you in these meetings and it was just like. Oh you don't wanna see me today. You drama see image right or do you. I didn't have a choice in this one. Because there was so many people that i was i would have been the only one without the image. You know what i'm saying. And like i was leading the conversation. So yeah dude. I didn't wanna do it at all therefore i popped it in and and i just explained to him what had happened and everything was going on in my life and then moved on with my with my day but here we are japes. We are back yet. It like crack attic. We don't miss. We don't miss these things you can't greg celeski says here's to all the husband's taken care of your wives and friends. Last night's for drinking at bars everywhere. We are the real. Mvp's people were rocks last night for saint patty say absolutely cake out and i think because texas is open A lot of the hotels were sold out here. So i had to kind of get what i what i got on this one and it was fine. I don't have a problem with it. But i think people had flown in just a party and walk the streets. Yeah i think. Probably there and florida right like it was packed. The hotels were sold out and and it reminded me of the good times. You know share. We're we're through it. I think we're through it at this point. Yeah we've said that. A couple of no but i mean for real. And here's why this morning. I woke up and i read an article about rhonda's santa's the the governor of florida finally one article said. Hey man did rhonda santa's get it right after all and we're just nobody wants to talk about it because he's a republican and he was against the shift from the beginning so in there. They had this They they took the numbers and they were like. There was thirty two thousand deaths in florida. Not a lot different than any other state to be honest with you. And he didn't have any buchan policies in place after the first month while everybody else did so was the was the risk in the economy and the stanleys was all worth it. And you know at the end. Of course they were like you know. Only time will tell in history will go back and fifteen years judge. It was like well it. Can you judge it right now because we can see the numbers and they all look very very similar to california so california and more deaths but they got more people some. Yeah yeah to me. It felt like that was the right move and everything else but also last night felt like that that texas backwards just like great man. I mean there wasn't one care in the world about masculinity the yells last night you know really except for in your hotel. My singular hotel was the only place included. The restaurant that i went to last night. Briesen without a mask sat down. And then then i gotta costed by the dude bartender who asked me if i hated white people and that's why i wouldn't drink irish car bombs with them. You're leaving out a lot of that story. I don't know how you jumped right to the esscalation. Do you know what i mean. I'm like okay. So the story goes you walk into the mexican place. You're susceptible to the word pussy and week and then you pretty obvious light. People pretty pretty obvious. I sit down at the bar and he goes. You want a shot. And i know dude i. Don't you know long flight. Whatever and then he saint patrick's day pussy pussy came out next. Obviously and then we then do you hate white. People was the one that got me. Because we're saint patrick's day in the irish. do we. Do you hate the irish right. I mean yes it. Got me got me so i was in after that. Three three simple phrases and i was like great. Let's line them up. Homeboy and and i made him do them with me. So the the beauty of that story is he did have to be carried out pretty sure that he was fired by his manager after that because the manager was the one who came out serving food. Oh jeez yeah. He was no longer there and then the bartender was no longer. No no he the manager serve me my food and then someone else came over with a tab when i was leaving so pretty sure homeboy was on his last night there. That was it and i doubt that he remembers that until this morning. Yeah until this morning. I wanna talk about that crazy story. That happened in that shooting yesterday in atlanta with the massage parlours. That was out there. You know look we fucking love. Asian people always say if you've read any of my books at this point they're just superior than us americans sorry and what china's doing with the fucking man policies and all that other shit right now i love it and i'm actually all in for that. Congratulations china for for taking your country. Back now the other fucked up shit you guys do what can condone but god dammit if they enter hardest fucking workers on the planet. And if i'm getting surgery any form batch sweet ass and one asian. Doing right whenever a story like this happens. There's obviously an immediate overreaction. To it i think whenever there's a shooting you're you're automatically hoping like each is like opening like shit was a white person. Sure enough. It was a fucking white was like Christ here we go. It's yeah and you know some type of mental thing or whatever this fucking dude. But as i was going into this a little more. I know this city like this. I used to play soccer. There is like a child. And i know where this happened in georgia. These aren't like deep tissue massage. Places that makes sense. You definitely get in a happy ending around. That area writes god. Chances are easy to say rights but there was the number one trending thing yesterday on. Twitter was stop the asian hates. It's been going on for a while but go ahead. I was to be honest with you. I don't know many people who hate asian. That's just a race. That isn't really brought up that much as far as hatred goes. I was unaware that there was some form of lake outward..

I had when i was in seventh or eighth grade. Don't really feel that much different to be honest with you i. I didn't even know where i was when i woke up this morning. 'cause you and i were two ships. I flew into austin. You flew out of austin handed off the child like a divorce couple in the airports and man went on about your business. I think your flight was delayed right. Yes yeah ended up being four hours. You don't say what's on what's to los angeles last night. I got in at one thirty great soy five and then i had a two hour drive. Well i i had. I mean i know you got stories but i i had a debacle in the rental. Of course. yeah it's very late. Cars were out of cars. Have a reservation. They're always out. Of course they're always out of course in los angeles especially and it's at hurt so you know that's like the biggest one you're looking at in this parking lot and you're like i mean but are you. Yeah and it's something you say all the time and always like calm down calm down. So in this instance. I had to pull the ross. What i call it right where you like. You get what you want. Yeah you're not going to feel great about it after but you gotta get in the car with the kid. Right outta cars. Reservation was earlier. I was like. I have to imagine that flights get delayed right or is it only mine is mine. The first flight and ever to be delayed right is delayed. And i was like all right. Well i don't have anywhere to go. And i don't have a ride so me and my son. We set up the setup suitcases and made a little bed. And you said i'm sleeping here. And so i'm sleeping here because i have nowhere to go. I don't have a phone right something like that where it's like. I don't have a phone sure. it's dead. I don't have a charger. My kids sick. So we're going to need to go night right here. And i like the temperature. The lighting is great so good night nyc right up pulled out. A book started reading him a book. Write night somehow. They found a compact. You don't say. And then when i went to check out with the compaq go. Do you want to update upgrade to a premium. The logic of we're out of cars. Yeah doesn't exist doesn't exist as it exists but look it is what it is. Got home super late sunglasses. I basically have ross's schedule like his normal everyday schedule killing me four hours sleep. Maybe and then it's accompanied by. I don't know ninety hundred calls. Friends hate me. Family hates me. Like yeah i mean i understand similar sich with me last night so get off the flights we did the live show for the nc double attorney which starts tonight the playing games arts and everybody had to get their bracket in daddy hadn't made his picks yet made them on air last night's to win everybody a lot of money. Let's get some stocks money in there and then put it in the mybookie accounts and let it ride brother next. Stop the moon. Did that show when we finish eight last night somewhere in there. Yeah like eight o'clock right before my calcutta yay and then i on the way out somewhere in the eight ish range. I thought i was having a conversation with the fake. Dan turns out. I wasn't you were chatting online like an eight year old asian playing video games across the palm of people what what is the calcutta. He kept saying calcutta. It's an auction so every team in the ncaa tournament is up for auction and it all goes towards a pot and whatever can you get whatever teams you end up buying for every win. They haven't determined you get a percentage of that pot. Yeah yeah that sounds fun and got. Ill annoy west. Virginia and oregon. No when i said it sounds fun. That was completely sarcastically. There was not one part of that sentence that was genuine or heartfelt. Sorry you hate gambling. So i was really. Everyone knows that about ross. Yeah eight to gamble I i have a lot of patients. People know that about me and And i hate to gamble. I go to the hotel last. Night's and austin as a texas should be open right should be opened forbids all the way around. It's almost like they went more like harder. We'll look are you feeling that like because it's now the inmates are running the asylum right where it's like. I'm not sure i can't tell. And here's why hotel was right office. Sixth street fifty thousand people raging their faces off. I don't know what day time or city that. I'm in so i didn't. I didn't remember it was saint patrick's day full disclosure neither. No i've been living out of this like baggy notre dame sweatshirt for weeks now because wherever i go it ends up freezing cold freezing here in austin this morning. Well we have jobs. You know what i mean. I can't really whatever it is what it is so i check in six street which is raging. Not one mask in sight. You couldn't have paid and found a mask last night right. The one hotel that i'm staying at sir. We're going to need you to the mask on. And i was like you can see out the window what was going on in the streets and i was like i go this real am i the one person who's gonna stop cova tonight. Not the fifty thousand out there in the streets superspreader go on out there. Who cares what the fuck i'm wearing. you know. so they wouldn't give me the room and so they handed me the blue mask. And then i put it on got in my room and then went out to get some food right. Hadn't eaten all day. I roll into would appear to be some mexican place and sit down at the bar now. People been drinking all day long. And i was sure not really in the mood for that. But i'm still susceptible to the word pussy or you or a week. Human like that phrase will always get me and then the final one. The final straw from the bartender who had a few drinks it whatever place it was was man. Do you hate white.

"Like you know. Sometimes i think in food people who listen to us know that we don't like to get into the whole asian masculinity thing because only leads to a really gross toxic thing. But we're not talking about it. We're going to try and talk about. But i i will say that sometimes. I think that you know how to create this. Like being an asian dude can be hard. Because it's it's hard to be and this is true for a lot of people but i'm saying for the experience for straight asian dude is like it's hard to be a total goofball. It's you know you you knew pressure to go into certain track. You know to have a certain kind of job to have certain kinds of of of hobbies you know to have a certain financial situation you know and i think in other words. It's hard to find. Asian dude straight dude artists. Right what we are. I hate to say that were artists but we kind of were kind of artists. Yeah yeah yeah. We're creatives and You know i. There's really not that many of us for whatever reason relative to you know to other options we have. I guess you could say. I mean you know. Just there's not that many asian male stand up comics. There's not that many asian nail musicians and stuff there are some you know but the path is like tricky for us But i'll say that if you if you're looking for someone eventually who is going to understand that like i'm a creative person and i like doing crush it and i think you think that's a lot of people won't understand that which may or may not be true but i think there are. I mean you know. Think about this. Like blonde haired asians. Ooh they get it. I'm looking. I'm looking for that if you got. If you're one of these asian girls out in brooklyn with the blonde hair and dress from nineteen ninety nine. icu. I know what you're talking running your those creative asians. Hey they're walking around. They're not running into an running into a lot of creative. Asian dudes dating like weird white scumbag. Dj guy because right right so you know what. They're missing they don't even know even know. There's got to be an dating app. Not just an asian dating because there's like soul swipe for by people and there's like the was one for the j. swipe for the jewish community. We have one. Because i think asian is too broad. We're talking billions bras. do broad. We need a blonde haired. Asian app where i can go blonde hair. Bushwick blotter book swing as we need blonde hair blonde hair bushwick web designer. Your magazines slash. You have zine do you have to you. Have to submit your zine in order to get you have you have to access named kyle but you're trying to call your mind. Gets you want to catch you in that phase girl. I say that a lot of our fans are are like that you know we. Are you know people who come to our shows and check us out. I would say they're not necessarily sky. Miles asians you know no relation. You can enjoy this. You can't enjoy what we do here. I don't think you can. If you're healthy. You're out there hustling. You're you're you're training for your ultra marathon. I was listening to. I'm not going to talk about the agent boss girl. I'm not a thing. But i was listening to podcasts. Episodes dislike and they were talking about people who inspire them and one of them. A helen was talking about her old boss from she used to be a consultant. Actually talking about her boss. Her boss is an asian woman and her bosses in asia. Woman who is really high level at this consulting firm does ultramarathons has kids is also. I don't know like a surfer. That person gave me so much anxiety. I was like yo is this. Is this the level that people want to be at like. That's so much pressure. And i don't feel that is inspiring. I want to meet the like the basic asian dad who is just trying to get by. Because that's me man. I'm just trying to get by. I feel. I mean. I'm not. I'm not a piece of shit dude. I'm not trying to train for an ultra marathon and write a novel and also raise like five adopted kids and all this shit. That's like i'm a person because that's like hey there's nothing wrong with that is awesome but like you say that that's a very like to me. What i hear is a You know. I hear a perfect. Sat score manifested into a human being right like like the way that the way. That guy lives his wife. Life is an a plus life in using the school rubric. "Asians. I said I said in this thing that he. You know, these things that he wants to do are going to be sabotaged by the deep state by the military industrial complex, if you if you end war in Afghanistan, you you end the more market there. If you work with Russia to actually fight together to destroy ISIS and other terrorist. You are going to take out the Middle Eastern or market, and you're going to end the biggest market of them all the Cold War two point. Oh market that started. We talked about it back in twenty fourteen that this was coming. It's a business model that may fifteen trillion dollars last time it was done, and they a lot of a war marketeers, filthy, rich. And squandered a lot of the public fund the other thing I wanted to bring out that's very important is an anniversary that's happening in February of this new year. This is something that's probably going to be completely looked over. But I will. Give you all a heads up. It'll be the thirtieth anniversary of the explanation. The retreat of Soviet forces out of Afghanistan. It was a significant moment that ended the Cold War and win a few short years imploded the over endowed overstretched Soviet military industrial complex and ended the Soviet Union..

"Hello and welcome to the monocle culture show. I'm Andrew Miller on the program this week. We will be discussing the new Rome com which has taken the will by proverbial storm crazy, rich Asians. It's been making headlines as a film that is putting Asian cinema on the western map, but how did you told up for our critics? We'll be asking them very shortly. They are Tim Robey film critic for telegraph and simmer enhance critic for the observer review among of publications. Based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan crazy, rich Asians follows the love story between Rachel chew and Nick young, Rachel. A native New Yorker is an economics professor who has no idea that her boyfriend comes from one of the wealthiest families in Singapore. She accompanies Nick to his home country to meet his family, and soon finds out that he is one of the most eligible bachelors in town if not the continent, and there's plenty of people looking to destroy their relationship. It is a lighthearted, classic Rome. Com story set to the ultra bright backdrop of these ultra rich lives will Rachel find her place in Knicks elite family. The is only one way to find out. One point two. The nigger dating, Nick young US know them or something. Yeah, they're just the biggest developers in all sing. Rachel, Asian back. People aren't just quick. They're crazy. You really should. It's only that you're like the principle of Asian. It's really more of a higher. This is Rachel shoot thinks you're some like unrefined banana, visit those fingers on outside a white on the inside. Clip from crazy rich Asians to answerin welcome to the program. Tim, the has been an extraordinary amount of ballyhoo around this film. It's become one of those films that possible to feel like you've seen it even if you haven't, and it is a wrong comb which is that most somewhat stayed in staple of formats. Can you remember the last time wrong com? Was this height say maybe point to my big fat Greek wedding, Nevada's film which had this kind of similar ethnic slot of being the only Greek American film of its of its time. This has been touted as the most fully Asian American film since the Joy Luck Club in the mid nineties in terms of the kind of representation should number vision faces on screen excetera I think there's a lot more going on for me. The thing that manages which is rare in comedies these days is that it gets funnier as it goes along rather than less funny. I think a lot of comedies start with that kind of comic premise, and then they have to gradually disentangle and become kind of straight Rome. Mm calm quite dull, foam eggs scenarios towards the end. Whereas all the way around and I think it starts with its worst scene for and gradually picks up and kind of catches onto the idea that excessive materialism can just keep topping itself funnier. And by the end, those really having a good song simmer in what we'll talk shortly about the what it means for the representation of Asians in western cinema and for Asian cinema. Generally, I wanted to talk about it. I just as a Rome comb, does it work? Is it actually for me glad the esta in from that point of view, because I think so much of the disclosure and this film is just overwhelmed by the divest he question. And actually the reason why I excited about it is because it is a Rome calm, and it's a studio, Rome, calm, right? The hasn't really been anything of this size of scale in a really long time. I'm thinking back to things like Valentine's Day and mother's day I didn't. If you remember these kind of on some. Boo. Raymond's at comedy's. Probably like two thousand ten, two thousand eleven. I mean you'd have to double check that. But these big celebrity Laden on some bull. Rome comes that that really were kind of coming out on holidays and trying to call female audience an AUSSIE those films were terrible. They were so bad. They were neither romantic nor comedic and this one manages to be both. And I think of that is in the costing. I think one thing that we don't really know how to talk about is what makes someone a good leading Mounir good leading women on with Henry goading. It's in the look. He knows how to look at a love interest. He's got the smolder down, but it's not threatening. You know, it's seductive, but it's not threatening. And that's very hard to do actually explain from and who Henry goading is his first film role, and he was plucks from a job as a travel present on in Singapore for the BBC. That's what he was doing before and whoever's rags to riches story right there. Absolutely. They, they kind of hounded him and they just said, we need this guy. He the Goliath to play this role, and he was really reluctance as of Stephens of acting. It's not so many before, and I think that you can see that he's. Nova's actor in some respects, he's he's not the most versatile. He's just got an incredible resource of charm and kind of good natured handsomeness and everything. He's kind of go to on sim saying, you can't take your eyes off him. He's very natural presence on screen and he's, he's already picked up other roles off. This is going to become a big star who fight the bridesmaid's dress now cost him into films. He's the leading man. In the next one he's making and someone he's going to become a, he's sort of must to become the agent, Hugh Grant or something like that. And he grown, I think, is a nice comparison because the flavor of muscular energy that he's offering is a more kind of refined gentlemanly Deb, Annette type of man rather than anything that's two alpha male, anything that's too much. Oh, or you know, the the sort of tentative version of men that's being offered to us in a lot of Rome comes, which is a nerdy man. And I don't mean that to be unkind to nets who obviously deserve love to. But I think if we're thinking about rum comes more broadly the way they've changed in the last ten twenty years is that the kind of more from mayo perspective that more bromance see them will comedic less romantic. And so different kind of man has been laid to take center stage. And I think this is a nice reversion to something more traditional, but without it being kind of sexist or aggressive or scary to musing before we
