Live updates | China scolds NATO for 'Cold War mentality'

"China has reprimanded NATO for what it calls the alliances Cold War mentality a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman also said NATO should give up the practice of creating enemies and not to try to mess up Asia and the whole world after disrupting Europe the comments come as NATO leaders hold a summit in Spain where they are expected to identify China as a challenge for the alliance The spokesman also said that NATO members actions near the Asian mainland and the South China Sea were creating tension and provoking conflicts These remarks follow reports from Australia that China committed a dangerous act of aggression against an Australian air force plane conducting aerial surveillance in the South China Sea China has also criticized sanctions brought against Russia whose invasion of Ukraine has refused to condemn or even describe as an act of aggression I'm Karen Chammas

WHO: COVID-19 deaths rise, reversing a 5-week decline

"Global deaths from the coronavirus are back on the rise In its latest weekly assessment the World Health Organization says 8700 people buy globally last week from COVID-19 a 4% increase coming after 5 weeks of declines The largest jump in deaths were centered in the Americas and the western Pacific coronavirus infection cases in general continued to fall with about 3.2 million new cases reported last week but large regional spikes of infection were seen in the Middle East and Southeast Asia The organization says the figures are likely an undercount because so many countries have reduced testing and surveillance hosting a meeting of the COVID-19 global action plan in Washington U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned health officials about relaxing their guard as the detailed plans to send additional pediatric vaccines to nations like Nepal and Mongolia I'm Jennifer King

WHO: COVID cases and deaths falling nearly everywhere

"The World Health Organization says the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths reported globally fell everywhere except the Middle East and Southeast Asia I'm Ben Thomas with the latest pandemic report The UN health agency says there was a 12% drop in cases and a 22% drop in deaths over the past week WHO chief doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus This is clearly a very encouraging trend precautions that still 7600 deaths The perception that the pandemic is over is understandable But misguided 18 months after mass immunization programs began in rich countries Tedros notes 68 countries mostly low income have yet to protect 40% of their people and with many countries dropping coronavirus protocols he warns A new and even more dangerous variant could emerge at any time And vast numbers of people remain and protected I'm Ben Thomas

The Discrepancy Between the Real Polluters and the Developed World

"So talk to us about the discrepancy between the real polluters and the developed world and then secondly, if these people are really serious, if fossil fuels are evil, if industrialization is evil, how much of this is truly the most pernicious post colonial colonialism if it were truly used against, I don't know. Third world countries like Africa who aren't allowed suddenly to use plastics made out of petroleum. So the duality of the standards first and then the real embedded colonial attitude that these people have. And while on the first point, the way the United Nations, they have a thing called the UN climate fund, $100 billion a year and Hillary Clinton was a big proponent of this as the Secretary of State under Obama when they did the UN Paris. Agreement. So this is the way if you look at some of the when they have a UN climate summit. The last one was in Scotland. I'm going to the one in Egypt this year in November. They're having one the next UN climate summit. The highest attending nations are African nations, South American and some of the poorer nations in the world. Why is that? Because they're all exempt from emissions. For one thing. And secondly, they're promised to be recipients of this climate aid, this redistribution, if you will, of money. And I talked to South African development activists who taught Leon low, who talked about this, the UN is going to give money to the leaders best able in Africa and South America, Asia, who are best able to lock their citizens in poverty and keep them poor because if you're poor, your emissions are low. And that's what the UN is doing. They're bribing essentially politicians of poor countries not to allow their people to

Biden’s Taiwan Comments Create Confusion on International Stage

"Right, I want to turn to what else is happening right now at the Democrats and this administration, because you know, presence making some pretty bold statements. On what would happen if we saw China trying to interviewing too much in Taiwan? And he basically said, I would take action. And that was a pretty bold statement. That was unlike anything that we've heard before because he tends to not want to put himself out there in front of these things. And a lot of people believe that this could be a mistake. So Biden's over there in Japan. And he's, you know, doing this. You're not supposed to call it a trade deal because they want to make sure everybody knows it's not some kind of free trade deal. It's a deal to strengthen our economic relations over their in Asia and hopefully hopefully have better relationships with certain countries that aren't China, right? So that we can stand up and have more of a presence against China. Anyway, he was asked about Taiwan and whether or not military involvement would ever be necessary to defend Taiwan and I want to share with you what he said. Yes, that's the commitment we made. We agree with the one China policy we signed onto it and all the attendant agreements made from there, but the idea that it can be taken by force just taken by force is just not appropriate. Okay, so that's kind of a big news flash, right? Because everybody's been a little bit worried about the whole Taiwan situation, given what's happened with Ukraine and Russia and everybody wants to see whether or not President Biden will stand up for Taiwan and stand up to China. Apparently he didn't tell his staff.

Did Laurie Garrett's Opinion About Masks Change From 2018?

"This is a woman by the name of Laurie Garrett She's at a national academy of medicine Now this is from 2018 That's important This is before the outbreak of COVID right She's giving a speech I saw this on Phil Kurtz feet And she's giving a speech about masks in a study they did in Japan about masks And she inadvertently at the time lets out the real reason why they need masks Now you'll see fear folks fear is their coin of the realm Listen she says it's only a couple of countries that have ever really done large scale studies to try and figure out what might work Japan it may not surprise you as one of them And they in one of their large studies they basically showed that the masks it seemed like the major efficacy of a mask is that it causes alarm in the other person And so you stay away from each other And that's what I think happened with SARS When I was in the SARS epidemic I saw everywhere all over Asia people started wearing these masks and it is alarming When you walk down the street and everybody coming towards you has a mask on You definitely do social distancing You definitely it's just a gut thing but did the mask really help them Did the mass keep the virus out Almost certainly not If the virus was in there around their face the mask would not have made the difference Wow Really That was 2018 is the science changed in that study in Japan and something we know now we didn't know then

"With the Sims and some way to develop a scent. Asia, which gel technology products do you use? So what we've been using, which is really just streamed line our entire warehousing and operations process is the Dell XPS laptop. We've had it for, I think, coming up on a year and a half now, and it runs extremely brand new, our operation manager loves it. And we use it pretty much to carry the entire business from the back end. To fruition. So we would not be able to live without our dough XPS. Yeah, how does that work? Explain to me how this system works. Sure. So we actually handle everything from concept idea through manufacturing to actual launch of product. So internally, of course, since we're a product based company, it's very, very important that all of our logistics, all of our warehousing, all of our inventory management is handled very, very efficiently with tools that are able to support the level of detail that we need. So in our warehouse facility, our operation manager in our lab manager uses our Dell XPS every single day to just be able to track inventory when we need to reorder products when any type of processing kind of collapsed if we're behind on schedule of releasing a new batch of product, then everything is just handled within that computer. And since it's really lightweight and portable, it's great because we can kind of just throw it in our bag as we need to drive from one location to the next if we need to drive to the warehouse back from the lab. It's always with us at any given point. And it's really just been better than using paper clipboard as well as any other type of laptop that isn't really as portable. It just gives us the flexibility to get the jobs done when we need them done. What's the greatest single challenge to marketing scent in this increasingly digital world? The single greatest challenge of marketing scent in the digital world is just finding a way that it resonates with the customer at the end because you can sell the idea of send, but as we've discussed earlier, it's a very, very personal thing. So we only take the story up to 50% based on what our vision is and we really work with our community to fill that last 50% because at the end of the day it is what's most important and most relevant to you and we think the best people that are able to communicate that experience are our customers themselves. As we leave you, I'd love to know your advice for young entrepreneurs looking to launch a brand in this increasingly digital world. Advice. This is always a fun question because it changes every single day. I'm like, if you're a young entrepreneur and you haven't started yet, right? I would say that it's good to feel fear, but don't over rationalize your fear. Don't try to explain what the fear is. Acknowledge the fear and continue forward. And take the risk because you'll never know if you don't try. You're delightful. I wish you so much luck with it. It's incredible brand and I really, really enjoyed researching it and I really looking I'm looking so forward to using it. Amazing, thank you so much Susie. Take care so nice to meet you. Wonderful meeting you. Have a great day. Our thanks to Asia grant for joining us here on just getting started on this special edition. And you think about it, sent me so much to so many people, the smell of your grandmother's cake, chicken soup on the stove, or maybe it is like she said, the smell of Jasmine on the beach, or the smell of a salty air or a breeze. I love the idea that she launched this company online digitally in this crazy modern world. She has reached a customer as this young entrepreneur could do so effectively and she has been able to create this brand and we are thrilled to support her here on just getting started. So thank you so very much for taking this very.

"Asia security initiative he's also Mansfield fellow at the university of Montana Tiff is also an author and former Bloomberg businessweek China bureau chief And he says the about face in Beijing was to be expected I'm not really surprised because as you said it's been so it's been almost a bloodbath for Chinese stocks in Hong Kong and Shanghai and I think they became concerned So Xi Jinping's right hand economic person Leo he met with top finance officials and basically said it's time to market stability is what we need to focus on now and promise to ease up on the regulatory pressure that's been on the tech stocks that's brought down brought down so many of them in terms of their value So I wasn't that surprised I guess the question is how long or how sustained will this rally be I think there are continuing issues particularly on the regulatory side I don't think China is backing away from its desire to deal with what they perceive as national security concerns related to online data which many of the companies that have been hit very hard have been in one way or another involved in that business Tiff is China it all starting to back away from its relationship with Russia too 'cause that is also been something we all are watching very very closely I think that China wants to signal to us that it's backing away from its relationship with Russia I think they are disturbed by how long this war has been going on They are definitely disturbed by the degree to which their international reputation has taken a beating for this perceived support in this real support for Russia during this during the invasion in the war So I think that's the message that they're trying to put out that they are actually stepping back I'm not so sure for a whole variety of reasons that they're going to actually just create real distance between them and Russia What would real distance look like And I mean could China actually afford to do it especially if Russia is so cut off from the rest of the world that China is really the only country that can supply it with higher end technology Yeah I mean I think for China the trade relationship you look at the Russian trade relationship I think it's about $147 billion last year For Russia it matters a whole lot China is their number one trading partner for China not so much I think it's about 2% of China's trade that compares to roughly 1213% each for the U.S..

"And that wasn't an uncommon experience when I was starting to do research for the book. The title of the book to go back to the question was something that came up from so many other people, they would say these things like Philippines are like the Mexicans of Asia, Philippines are like the Latin Asians or the Hispanic Asians. And this was not like anybody's attempt to try to save Filipinos should just be lumped into the Latino category. This was just like the way that people were able to sort of crystallize this unique position of Filipinos, Vis-à-vis Asians and Latinos in the U.S.. For sure. And you're talking about an aspect of the kind of racial ambiguity of Filipinos that I think a lot of people try to understand right now that kind of lends itself to Filipinos, exclusion from the typical AAPI title. We've written about, you know, this idea that Filipinos feel a connection to Asian American nest in different ways and at different times in different contexts. And you know, personally, for me, I've had sort of complex feelings about how to access communities of solidarity that have sort of build up around the Asian community right now and within the Asian community because I don't read as AAPI, you know? And even if I was full filipina, I wouldn't read as AAPI. For you, in this moment, when there's this sort of show of solidarity, and it's supposed to be this really powerful moment of unity. I mean, how do you personally engage in those communities when it can sometimes still feel pretty exclusionary? I think about all the anti Asian violence that is happening. And fairly recently in front of one of the grocery stores that my parents go to an eagle rock, there was a woman who quote unquote looks Asian, you know, but was a Mexican American. 70 year old woman that was attacked because she looked Asian. I think about all the anti Asian violence, not just the attacks, but the fact that it's Philippine a nurses that are the ones that are literally dying to save lives. In some ways, that's like an attack in and of itself too because you think about who are the ones who are most likely to be put in vulnerable situations,.

"Hey, what's up? This is Gustavo. Today we have a crossover episode with our sister show, Asian enough. Anthony ocampo is a Filipino American born and raised right here in Los Angeles. As a sociologist, he spent his career studying the intersection of race, gender and immigration, which guided his groundbreaking book, the Latinos of Asia, how Filipino Americans break the rule of race. It's a great book not all boring academic style, but relatable. Today, Asian enough hosts, suhana Hussein and Johanna bouya explore another facet of a couple's work. What it means to be brown and gay in Los Angeles. Thanks.

"And it took medicine. We've helped the government established modern border control checkpoints with state of the technology to combat smuggling and to fight human trafficking by deepening. These security partnerships were also investing in a stable foundation for central asia to unlock. It's great economic potential. The images of the old silk road when central asia was truly at the crossroads of civilization does not have to be just an emory passed can become prologue today. Central asia's not only bursting with resources but brimming with youthful entrepreneurial potential a full half of its population is under the age of thirty and in his status as she could stand around. A third of the population is actually closer in age to twenty to deliver on the aspirations of this new generation. We want to help central asia build solid basis for prosperity by integrating it into a global rules-based system. That's why we've been supporting extends efforts to join curious standards if he can stand as members of the world trade organization and we expect this long sought goal to be realised this year. Our nation's businesses their talent and technological leadership can play an essential role in helping the region develop its own culture of innovation and entrepreneurship and we will continue to build these connections on both sides of the world. The united states recently hosted a delegation from turkmenistan's power sector khazakstan will host an investment forum for us companies the summer. Now despite these efforts. I think everyone recognizes in central asia. Still has a long way to go in building a more open. Cooperative and connected market. The fosters true entrepreneurship and delivers benefits to ordinary people. The region remains one of the least integrated in the world with only about six percent of its total trade occurring within central asia. And as a result it's on people are not benefiting from this enormous potential. That's why as part of the new silk road initiative. The united states is helping develop the region's connectivity.

"Today's special edition of the globalist we are going to focus on asia and what two thousand and twenty one might hold for the region. The obvious answer might seem and will hopefully be almost by definition what with one thing and another a vast improvement but even when asia does not find itself at the epicenter of a global health crisis it remains a complicated part of the world bringing their hostages to fortune to this look ahead to ages. Next twelve months are monocle. Hong kong bureau chief. James chambers monica's. Tokyo bureau chief. Fiona wilson a little later on monaco's bangkok correspondent gwen. Robinson will join us. But first to james and fiona fiona. Let's start with you. In japan as we mentioned in that introduction a new prime minister in office seeking to fill the big shoes and follow the tough act of shinzo are has yet figured out. What kind of prime minister he's going to be is a very good question. I mean i think he's been quite difficult for serger. Falling shinzo obey. Shinzo abe's for all his faults. You know longest serving prime minister in japanese history. So you go quiet trot record. He knows how to win elections. And you know. He survived an awful lot of ups and downs. Scandals also had to deal with the pandemic and ultimately how to deal with illness as well so yeah so quite challenging to come into that role. He started off pretty well. I think his ratings quite good. But i think as people have seen ways handled the pandemic <unk>. Impressed is ratings have dropped. There's also the issue about the olympics. Will it happen waiting to happen. And i think so. Go really backing this. Huge domestic tourism tourism campaign encouraging. People around the country has gone down pretty badly although it has to be said <hes>. Tens of millions of people have been guy around the country so they liked that bit of it. But so i think it's quite a tough time for him and interesting. He has to have an election by next autumn. And i think he's in for a pretty rough ride few under just to follow that up. You did the mention the oh word. If there is one thing that japan hopes it can look forward to in two thousand and twenty one it is the two thousand twenty <hes>. Tokyo postponed because of the obvious right now on new year's day. How likely do they look. It really depends on you. Talk to to be honest. The government would love it to happen. They really wanted to happen dog to the saying we absolutely have to vaccinate everyone. And that's not guaranteed yet. Japan's rollout of vaccinations will be in the spring. And they say you know. We'll have everyone backs in asia by the summer. And if not. I think they are going to have a problem on their hands. There are so many vested interest in the olympics in definitely. The government is under pressure from tv companies. Advertises they want it to happen. Population is still quite lukewarm. I think many people feel it puts this unnecessary pressure on the country. At a time. When is trying to deal with the pandemic. we're still dealing with that joins in hong kong or bring you in now. It being new year's day let's at least out <hes>. Attempting optimism <hes>. As we were just discussing. Japan has one great big blue ribbon event to look forward to hopefully in two thousand and twenty one. Two thousand and twenty was a tough year for hong kong for the same reasons. It was a tough year for everybody but for other reasons. Besides is there anything in particular vet. People in hong kong are looking forward to this year. Yes well we've had a rough couple of years here in hong kong so <hes>. You know when you've hit rock awesome. Which i think that's not hong kong. Has i mean the only way to go his up. So i guess people are looking at s- an economic recovery an a return to business as usual in terms of an making money and getting on that side of things but <hes>. In looking ahead the the rest of the year. I mean there are few big dates to <hes>. To look forward to the the first one would be at the end of this month on the polls in january when the <hes> the uk's visa essentially for the hong kong people comes into play and up to three million on congas could suddenly decamp to britain. So if that happens if the floodgates opened not lovely be a huge event we've oils essentially being stuck in vung most of twenty twenty so <hes>. It's been difficult to town at the moments <hes>. How big that exodus will be. And there's no no re- odds on dejean that which you know. Every time i do meet with hong kong peasant they do generate trying to ask me once. Lights live in the uk <hes>. Just like an schooling an election. Step in where they should live. What's baath liken. Is it better than oxford as there is. There is a genuine interest. But i guess we're waiting to see how many people actually all through with all of the with these <hes>. These moves

"Halloween new listeners. I recently spoke to Norman Cello from Port Lovers Asia about Indian NOAH. It is the most extensive interview. I have given about the structure the origin and as some of the behind the scenes techniques that I employ to produce Indian Noah. It is a one odd. Plus conversation read. I spoke about how I went from spending decades writing novels to doing spoken word to diving into the world of podcasting talk about my writing process especially the use of TV and clean writing techniques to create fast binge worthy episodes. I talk about the unique structure behind Indian watt and it's multiple shows and I also talk about how one can take on the challenge of doing something new in the creative podcasting scene and how to tap into it as a budding podcastone auto creative coming up now in this episode off some accepts from that conversation but if you want to listen to the entire interview go check out Port Lavish Asia on your podcasting APP And listen to this conversation or you can visit. My social media handles at Indian out on twitter or at underscored indication morally on instagram. I do not think calls in Newark as podcast in my head. I think I've been running. I'm running. Hbo Numerous TV shows that I need to produce that I need substantial joke. Uptick little kind of audience and they need to make sure that these shows so I think like a studio executed. I think like showrunner. I will think like a writer's room in TV lighting room. And in doing all of this I employed the TV clean fighting structure which gives it a binge with equality. I think the engine now and going into the future it'd be the same Mandela's Info Bats East. Tv Lighting Television is the most superior supreme form of T. of storytelling allstone. That's is the big fish in the ocean. Everything else comes below it. It's because of its potential to marry narratives music and visuals and be able to tell us long-form About that's obvious but I thought always. How can we litigated this the podcasting environments and the most obvious advantage for me and for more stories in the? Who might be willing to adult this? If that's forget all the other structures poetry novels old certain People Love Television. People used to the structure of bats beloved the most to when they transition from sitting of that easy and engage connect Listened to story coming to a story in the Indian no ours comforting to them because they make you understand the structure of the of the story that listening to just switching from one. Tv show they can save that is a TV show. That's in their year. That's that's what I would like to say about the stuck to them. Could you tell me maybe? Walk me through the structure and could you tell me? Why did he do it like that? Yeah Yeah So. My goal was to Oakland the Joan. But then look at what kind of structures popular within those genres in general podcasting and started telling seen this very clear to me that the APP is delay tree story structure which is at people reading the expedient of someone going through a animal experience persuaded popular. So that's why instituted in new X. Which is a collection of Admiral expedience that people have shared with me over the ease and I have a huge positive this plus because I've actively asked people have always intrigued by the supernatural than actively engaged in the conversation. I asked people. Have you experienced something like this? Everyone has a story. Everyone has a story that easily. 'em FETUS and sales will add from close friends Vostro puzzle this so I won't do have a segments Out fictionalized this obviously make more eligible for in a in a narrative format than present that to people so that's Indian And then I have into one shot. Which in simplest terms is your classic horror short story but you know is the is the biggest Acela in the horror genre in literature widely held opinion or works better less short story than big nobles yet because of the size of the nobles sharpness. The real sort of you know the cutting edge feeding of some of the stories on diluted by it format exists as well. I'm excited because it's deposited mess in the podcasting community. The one shots I did because short stories a popular but also because it. Let's me like two story very quickly about something that's happening now. So the one of the things I have. Commended been You to look at the violence or the you that I've done recently. Forbes short stories that look at the pandemic and different aspects off it so show grade for me to able to kind of scenario type story so to give you an example. Transmission is one of the stories in the courtroom Boyfriend girlfriend joining the pandemic decide to go an isolate themselves and they have sex and through. This virus is transmitted becomes this Fund Royd Horror Story and that is to examine made to look at off fears of disease illness. What our bodies are. "In the Asia Pacific including in Japan let's get all the latest with Plavix bronchitis in Hong Kong Brian yeah let's take a look at these numbers here because so we had that two hour plus a coronavirus briefing a lot came out is that the ASX two hundred trading up a little more than two percent right now the Nikkei has just opened to the downside off about one point six percent it's not just being a minute past eight o'clock here in Hong Kong and looking at the cost be it is tracking lower as well down about nine tenths of one percent so mixed performance today the MSCI's specific index is flat here at the moment as we look at these different markets Dalian one oh seven forty four so we're seeing some movement there we've got the Bloomberg dollar spot index at twelve hundred forty seven and this was a pretty rough day on Wall Street the worst quarter for the Dow Jones industrial average since nineteen eighty seven and said to be the worst first quarter for the Dow ever in the one hundred plus years of operating that index the index was down twenty three percent over the quarter down four hundred ten points today one point eight percent the S. and P. five hundred tracked down forty two points a loss of one point six percent the out performer was the nasdaq down a little less than one percent we also had a little bit of outperformance in the Russell two thousand and it wasn't a particularly volatile day we had the Vicks actually move a little bit to the downside off about six percent three points or so still though in the low fifties Juliet back to you but of course it was the end of the quarter Brian and US stocks I did sink as the Dow suffered its worst quarter since nineteen eighty seven coming off to unprecedented shutdowns in large portions of the global economy to really crying combat the spread of the coronavirus massive government spending a monetary stimulus had lifted U. "And if they're not scams are really uninteresting stuff, but the the sort of centralized infrastructure around crypto. So like the by the Hobie that okay exchange UNITA's kind of fans are in my opinion in like an order of magnitude better than the US counterparts. And so if you compare like, you know, by chance to not to pick on anyone, but like, you know, Polonia or something it's just the team is incredibly competent their execution ability is off the charts. And so we found is that we do we look we look at and do a lot more like equity deals in China that are for kind of crypto associated companies. And then we do a lot more actual criminal. Currency deals in the US where I think there's kind of more sort of old school cypher punk like creek congress for talent. Why don't go ahead to be? Yeah. Right. So especially on just Capron preneurs lie. One thing we of wanting less specific in China or Asia Asia in general is on. So because we found all this application discentralising application are really good to use there. And I think that's probably partially because of the whole thing testing is pretty Vance like betting outback in just a backing China. So here in the United States, and people are Stu paying with a placid in vital billions of paper checks every year, but lie everything is cashless. So if you ever go to Beijing Shanghai just that people just use alipay or light wish pay everywhere. So I think decentralized centralized application or centralized Fantine for structure is way more advanced there. So let desk. Why there's a lot of talents and entrepreneurs and.

And you sorta figured out as an adult who to hate who not to hate, and you figured out the United States is not the United States military and the presence. There is not the people to hate. It's isis. It is the is the radicals. And you learn. And I we've often said this that over the last you think about that over the last eight years eighty to one hundred years the best Representative of what the United States has been about is the occupying forces of the United States military in Europe in Asia. And and now you're seeing it in the Middle East. You may not want. You may not you may you may have that opinion. Look, we shouldn't be the world's police men, and that's a different discussion to have. But you cannot look at the history over the last eighty years and not look at it and say the occupying forces of the United States military worldwide has been one of the biggest stabilizing institutions in the history of the world for bringing for bringing peace and helping develop societies into democratic republic's. Yeah. Think about a ten year old child in two thousand and three who now might be or might have already started the family. So they were enough at that point in two thousand three to know about Saddam Hussein and know what kind of rule they were under. And now, they're they're having their own family, which changes your interests drastically. And they have for the most part peace in their country. They certainly without a doubt have more choices.
