There could be some patchy fog coming our way once again by early morning, slowed some of you down this morning. We'll start out Thursday with temperatures in the 50s rising to around 80 degrees once again. Your skies tomorrow partly sunny, tracking the next weather maker and that's going to be a strong fall cold front that will send temperatures dramatically south from where they are today. Expect a 30 to about 40 degree temperature drop by Sunday morning. Could be some of the chilis era season of the coming our way with the system and we will get a little bit of rain rain right now expected on Friday. Some isolated showers around the area under mostly cloudy skies. Fridays high about 75 to 80 degrees and then on Saturday we'll be looking at temperatures in the 60s all day long with some scattered showers around the area and breezy conditions to boot with those temperatures in the 60s. As we clear out on Sunday it's 40s to start pretty chilly still a breezy wind back to sunshine with a high of 62 degrees so fall back definitely this upcoming weekend. White says crime in the district is out of control and the National Guard could help protect children and other innocent people. And we'll talk to WTOP's Kate Ryan who was on the scene of that news conference earlier today. She'll go more in depth in what Traon White has in mind. 532, new this afternoon, armed an suspect wanted on charges of attempted murder has been shot by federal marshals in Alexandria this Happened afternoon. about 1245 along Richmond Highway in the area of Potomac Yard. Shots were fired while US marshals were trying to arrest the suspect. He's been wanted on several charges. No officers were hurt. The suspect is now listed in critical condition. 7 News reporter Christian Flores joined us earlier with more from the scene. It's a massive crime scene we're looking at right now. We're seeing one pickup truck just absolutely peppered with bullet holes. Back windshield of another vehicle shattered shot out. And this by the AT &T store. In fact, the glass door of the AT &T store is also shattered and shot out. The suspect was wanted by the Talbot County Sheriff's office Office in Easton, Maryland. Alexandria police are now investigating the shooting. 532 the Supreme Court is reinstating a regulation on ghost guns. Ghost guns don't have serial numbers. President Biden imposed new a rule last year and it was invalidated in June by a judge in Texas. It's no longer a ghost. It has a return address. It's going to help save lives, reduce crime and get more criminals off the streets. The Justice Department told the court local law enforcement agencies seized more than 19 ,000 ghost guns at crime scenes in 2021, a more than tenfold increase in just five years. We always let all of our gas tells us about the company work at since you're the founder we gotta know what is edge wanna edge. Drama is a little bit of a dream. Job for me i've I've spent most of my career innovating inside of other people's it organizations building infrastructure in data centers. And things like that. And and never thought i had the The polite term. I guess gumption to go out and do it on my own. But over the last five years i've been spending the majority of my time looking at technology but technology focused on on edge and my basic assumption. Was that address can be big enough. That all of the infrastructure that we have available on the planet now needs to be brought to bear and that the best way to expand the market is not by forcing everyone to build new for every opportunity that might expand to the edge but rather leverage infrastructure that has to some degree beginning to go fallow because of change buying behavior people buying for edge people buying for for digital transformation are no longer buying neighborhood data center. That's not their strategy anymore. So i thought with the the thousands of data around the world individually each one of those data centers may not seem all that important but connected they offer an enormous opportunity to the customer and people trying to deploy in the end or exploited the edge or even deploy because of greater technology adoption through digital transformation. And so i'm through vaughn. I'm trying to make that process easier. trying to make the The idea of buying complex formerly very physical very manual oriented purchases of network of data center of services of edge compute. All those things to make that much more of a of a imposible kind of best fit opportunity for the customer rather than the traditional brag. Matic let spend three months or three years going through this Trying to find what we need. And let's walk some of our listeners through this conversation because as much as we have c. suite level people. We also people that are just entering into the workforce and learn much more about technology when the key words keep own. You've used is the idea in this concept of edge. I'm gonna kinda say what i know about it. And then i'd love to hear your interpretation so the whole idea of edges that your compute resource moves closer to basically who needs it so everywhere i am instead of sending a signal back to in each queue or sending a signal back to like ashburn where all the public cloud service providers are all located at that latency and time between the moment. I want information the moment of get information. That's the whole point of edges bringing that whole resource closer to me. So i basically effectively can work through massive data sets through bigger applications through bigger utilities. Closer faster and more seamlessly. Now the other thing i understand about. Data centers is it's bought and sold kind of like real estate so that you are the reason why i bring this because you talk about how you you're approaching it in a different way and you would have to if i wanted to. Let's say locate a resource in a local data center. I have to call them up. I got to rent what they call a cage. I gotta put my equipment in there. You said network is not readily available. That might be surprising to people that even though you bought in space edge data center you would then need order connectivity. If you wanted to connect the public cloud you have to order a direct connect. That might take like months. It can take months to even get a direct line into a public cloud service. So this is where it is the idea of edges that all computing resources closer to you. But the reality of data center purchasing is that it's very piecemeal. Let's say and it's like you have to fill out orders in it takes time. It's not like public cloud services. Where i say i want. I want to spend up become. Let's say you know a server. I click a button. And it's there. If i were to build in edge compute center close to me at literally have to go shopping for equipment. I have to go is like a lot of steps. That's what i understand in the world today. Talk about how you see it. And how edge. Vaughn is going to simplify this process. Kind like what. You're talking about. A great i mean and you use stated like at least half of my problem statement or opportunity statement as i prefer to call it a relative dijana but edge computing. I mean i would only add to things flavors to what you said. One flavor is more around the fact that and this is maybe be obvious. "Roablocks. This has something called a physics engine and a physics engine essentially outlines the rules of the physics of the game. If if my character jumps how does gravity interact with that character. Is You know. Is it like the real world. Where it's you know? Nine point nate meters per second squared. Or whatever or is it is it like you and you can double jump for something you know exactly. Excellent is the physics engine. Something that is simple enough that you can keep entirely on a client device. Or is that something where it's like. You have to make a round trip up to make physics decisions so the physics engine itself is definitely something that could be kept on the device but you actually run into the networking in ownership problems. That we were just talking about right. If if you imagine a game like grand theft auto where you can be driving a car are and I can be driving a car and we crash them together right if you assume that there will be some round trip time from my client to the server and from your client to the server from my perspective rendering in real time on my device if you make a last minute adjustment right before our two cars crash rush. I'm GonNa not see that because that last minute adjustment didn't make it to my device by the time my last minute input push got sent up to the server at a new sink of of the real time. Geometry locations came back down from the server to my device. Answer you might see a different different car crash that I would see on my client so really one of the core competencies of a game engine like what we've built it. Roadblocks is how you arbitrate ownership of physics. And frankly how you do some predictive modeling of even things down to user input to try. Try to come up with the best. We have a really complex set of code. That basically says well if there's no other players near you obviously we can have physics owned locally ugly on your Client N. as other players in other dynamic interactions come closer and closer to you this essentially physics ownership code base kicks in and tries to determine the optimal placement of stuff either in the cloud or on your local client and which version of the world takes precedence. That's crazy I mean. This is the kind of thing I was. Why like talking to people about the gaming the gaming business do you have these guys that crazy problems the a fourteen year trajectory? What's interesting about a fourteen year? Trajectory is that takes you back to pre cloud days. There was a show we did within two it. And you know they get to a point where we've got the infrastructure it's useful but there's there's these cool cloud services and maybe it would be cheaper if we didn't own any infrastructure and so they have a set of very interesting decisions about should they get rid of their on MM permit for structure. Should they move to the cloud with roadblocks. I assume it's a little bit simpler because the real traction with the product didn't start until like the post cloud era but I am nonetheless. Curious are there uses of of on Prim infrastructure everything entirely cloud. No We so there's actually two aspects to that one is. You're absolutely right that when they started roadblocks the word cloud hadn't really even been coined yet in in fact if you ask the engineers who are at the company at the time we actually have our game server infrastructure internally is referred to as RC. See Roadblocks Fox compute cloud and they swear up and down that the industry had not used the word cloud before they decided to call it that internally. I don't don't know if I believe them. I wasn't here at the time. But if you believe them they think they coined the name cloud which is hilarious in terms of our current infrastructure. There's actually another aspect of it as well. Which is the operating company at our scale? We are now having to make decisions about not just whether weather or not as effective to move stuff out of our legacy on prem data center in Chicago into the cloud but also at this point our scale justifies building out our own global essentially private cloud infrastructure. So one of the big investments that we've made at the company over the last two years is is literally acquiring acquiring our own global fiber network standing up a a series of. I think we're at sixteen or seventeen edge termination pops around the world and running all of data between our own fully owns data centers in Chicago and Ashburn Virginia over our own private fiber infrastructure infrastructure to those edge termination nodes so from our perspective. Our the way we think about this is if you're a sort of full stack application engineer building service service. You shouldn't actually care what is what infrastructure that service is being hosted on there should be an abstraction layer that says hey I just need to host the service that needs to be able to serve you know X. amount of volume and and and to be able to scale at why why rate up to future volumes and then beneath that abstraction layer there's Microsoft's platform team. That doesn't actually care explicitly. Okay what your service does. They don't care if it's serving the social graph or if it's serving the in purchase functionality or whatever they agency a service that needs hosting with a specific geographic distribution of consumption and specific growth rate with individual certain signals around volume and stuff like that and their job is to place that service on the best possible infrastructure for structure whether that's public cloud infrastructure our own bare metal for cost reasons or our legacy data center. Because it's it's part of one of our like you know sort of legacy model lists that haven't been upgraded to the latest stack yet so from our perspective basically try to have a team whose sole mission in is making optimal decisions around what infrastructure is best to host individual services into abstract that away from the the work that in actual application engineer would need to do to optimize that the resultant user experience does that make sense. Yes so speaking of services. I assume that for many years roablocks had a monolithic code base. Because you know I think uh over the course of fourteen years there has been this increased promotion of the of the breaking up of monolith into domain specific services services or service oriented architecture or micro services architecture or whatever the term does your is so that probably happened. You know that. Kind of breaking up of the monolith or addendums to the monolith that probably start happening before you joined the company three three years ago. Can you just tell me the the rough picture of the architecture today. There's some central monolith and then some other services or is it. Is it like a lot of just a flat services architecture so in an interesting way this kind of goes back to a core roadblocks engineering principle which is sort of set your north star in terms of with the the way you want to solve a certain class of engineering problems and then sort of make sure that any near-term firm engineering technology choice that you make moves your stack towards that long-term Northstar so essentially is another way of saying make make sure you're doing the engineering investment necessary to avoid any sort of unnecessary technical debt. This is a core roadblocks engineering principle. Something we think about. Every day as it relates to architecture vis-a-vis like model. It said micro services we still do have a core four of Monolithic code base that powers. Some percentage of the roadblocks dub dub dub website and associated services the The reason that still exists is that it has proven capable more or less of serving the the fifty to one hundred x traffic that increase that is experienced over the last three to four years. As we've we've gone through this crazy exponential exponential growth curve varies an internal mandate today and has been for for years. Now where if you're doing significant modification to existing existing services. You should simultaneously do the work that's necessary to break them out of the monolith and stand them up. As a containerized micro service independently scalable manage dependencies et Cetera. And so that we have like internal tracking sheets that show the migration of core services out of the monolithic into these independently hosted micro services that now are significant majority of our backend infrastructure after. But there's not a abstract internal mandate that says. Hey stop all product work until the monolith is dead and basically draws back to the idea idea that when that Monolithic code base was created. Yes it was a monolith but it was also created with a ton of attention paid to scale ability. The end of future magnitude of demand concerns in. It's actually even to this day operating relatively wealth from a scale ability standpoint. The only part of it. That's actually a really major negative drain on internal resources that at our current scale of headcount in the engineering department having everybody iterating on the same model at the code base can be kind of painful at the release schedule becomes a little bit harder to manage and stuff like that and so we think. Moving microscopes actually unblocks individual teams allows them to sort of control their own destiny in terms of shipping their own services and not have to wait for the daily monolith release to get their code out into user's hands. What they're saying: Mixed reaction to Amazon's HQ announcement
"Got a lot of cool reactions from people affected by the Masan headquarters story, Sarah. Yeah, we really did. And we're going to read a few of them now and kinda kinda kinda pick them apart. And and see what we agree with Arthur from Arlington Virginia notes that Amazon's Kurt operations in the area. Which as we noted on the show yesterday are already pretty bast are in Ashburn. Arthur says that's well outside the beltway and the people working in living. They're not gonna wanna commute into Irwin ten Amazon's inside the beltway operations are quotes mainly tied to the government in these are not really HQ function. So Arthur doesn't think that this counts as an expansion for Amazon. Really he and peach also pointed out something that a lot of coverage didn't pass on which is that Virginia Tech will be opening technology campus, adjacent to Amazon. So these are these are good on the ground reports from someone actually in Virginia. I love this. Thank you. Arthur. Granted I think it's fair to say, okay. The folks out in Ashburn aren't going to be feeding into Amazon's Kern opperations, but it is still an area that Amazon is familiar with and was negotiating with. And I don't think they ever thought they would move the people in. But it's it's a fair point inside the beltway stuff, though, I don't know what. Amazon is going to use this second regional office. It's not even HQ anymore. It's a regional office for my suspicion is that it probably will have a lot to do with the government cloud of cloud that Amazon operates, especially if they get that DOD bid thereafter that will probably operate out of there because it's right next to the Pentagon. So I'm less inclined to a seed to to the inside the beltway not mattering because it's government stuff. I think it really does. But yeah, maybe it's unfair to say that that folks being out Nash burner are are part of a of an. Operation that really has any effect on something pretty far away in right on the Potomac, basically. So I don't know what do you what do you think of this, Sarah? Well, you know, one of the things that I'm I didn't realize and thank you Arthur is pointing out the Virginia Tech, huge college opening technology campus, adjacent to Amazon, and how the two might you know, Amazon might funnel and money for research projects, which would make a lot of sense. And like, you said the region itself is definitely skewed government wise. But I think a lot of folks don't realize, you know, even when you hear early intesne Virginia. It's like, well, it's adjacent to Washington DC. Okay. Oh, all right. So, you know, you're you're in this era in this actually, huge metropolitan area. That's not. Yes, they are. They are separate from each other. But collectively, it's it's closer to a lot of industry than than one might think. If they're not from. With that other Silicon Valley kind of feel in Virginia AOL used to when when I was living in Arlington, the big AOL. Skyscraper was right there downtown Arlington. You could see it across the Tomac.
