"Well, quite honestly, it sounds crazy, but I actually wouldn't. I think Tim was the one who brought this up talking about Bitcoin and some of the other types of places that he might try to have investment part pieces of this company because we already know enough I think about what the direction is what the company's doing and what the direction is in terms of which type of vehicles he wants to sell. Obviously not the low end he wants to hire in, and he wants those margins, but I'd be curious about what his thoughts are going forward in terms of some of those investment ideas as well. We've got an earnings alert meantime on IBM, we're tracking those shares lower in the after hours. The company's call is underway. Let's get to deodor bossa, who's back with the details. Hey debo. Hey, Melissa, we'll see you Arvind Krishna opening up the call, acknowledging that in some areas, the results did fall short of their own expectations. The streets as well. He said that the upcoming spinoff of the legacy business is just one of many actions that he's taking to focus the business on hybrid cloud and AI and improve its financial profile, but of course, big blue continues to be dogged by the same question for years now. Can it actually turn the ship? Despite all the companies talk of next generation tech, like hybrid cloud and AI, it mis revenue expectations, net income declining in a continues to disappoint investors and underperform the broader markets and it's great chip piers. Even its cloud segment guys showed some decelerating sequential growth and of the four major divisions only global business services beat the streets forecast, systems, revenue, I want to point out as well because that includes hardware. It was down nearly 12% this quarter, despite a pickup in IT spending amid the pandemic. There was no guidance either guys. We are getting ready for that spin off on November, third, but there's some skepticism, whether of course IBM can turn that ship. Melissa, back to you. Deandre, thank you. Did you will be on the call? Did your bossa systems they're saying was soft because of a mainframe upgrade that's happening in the first half of next year. But if you take a look at the cloud business, I mean, up two and a half percent. Tim, I don't know, can you can you make the case for IBM after all of these quarters of disappointments? Look, redhead was a great acquisition, but it's not enough to pull this thing. They're not going to grow revenue. The top line won't grow for 5 years. And it's a company that also I think forget the risks that may be around their accounting and what's truly going on there. It's more that I think they have to make acquisitions. And so for investors, there's no free cash flow here that's coming back to you for a company that's not growing the top line any time soon. These are the things to be concerned about. A stock that's underperformed the triple cues or the NASDAQ 100 by 700 basis points this year. It's not getting better. And so again, yeah, you need to see more cloud growth, but it's impossible for Red Hat to pull this in giant ship and turn it around overnight. I mean, Red Hat was up 17% in the quarter, and that certainly wasn't enough Grasso. Yeah, when I look at it, it's counterintuitive to what you would expect from what I'm talking about tech here. This was I picked this years ago as my secular short. But when I look at it now, I think I'd be a buyer of it here. A it's cheap, it fits into that value bucket. B, you have a yield of 4.6%. You're not buying a stock for that, but it does fit really into that value bucket nicely. And if we start to see rates rise, I think that this can really outperform. If I told you that this one is up 12% and it's outperformed apple for the year, you would scratch your head, right? So think about that. What would you do with apple here? You're not going to call that a secular short. You're not going to call that something that you should dump right now. It's a value. It's a value tech stock. So I think that we're throwing out IBM a little too early or a little too late, however you want to look at your timeline. I think that it's actually worth buying on this believe it or not. Contrarian view there. All right, coming up. Some.

Listen for that little trip down memory lane of my podcasting career on this weekend's bonus episode sources are telling the wall street journal that tsmc plans to increase prices by around ten percent for their advanced chips and around twenty percent for less advanced chips starting later this year or early next which might sound like a boring headline but you do realize this will probably make like every imaginable gadget slightly more expensive going forward. Quote apple is one of tsmc's largest customers and its iphones use advanced microprocessors made in tsmc foundries. It couldn't be determined how much more apple would pay a. Tsmc spokeswoman declined to comment on prices but said the company works closely with customers. An apple spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment the price increases. Come in the wake of a global semiconductor shortage that has affected apple and most car makers including general motors and toyota in august. Gm said it had to idol factories in north america. That make large pickup trucks. The company's biggest moneymaker and last week. Toyota said it would curb production by forty percent in september. The increases have a twofold purpose for tsmc as it addresses the shortages in the short term. Higher prices pushed down demand and preserve supply for customers who have no other choice over the long term. The higher income will help tsmc invest aggressively in new capacity. According to analysts the company has said it plans to spend a total of one hundred billion dollars over the next three years on new factories and equipment as well as research and development it is expanding its production capacity in nanjing china and has started construction on a twelve billion dollars facility in arizona. Chips are only one of many costs that go into a car or smartphone but tsmc's price increases could eventually filter down to consumers next year unless brand name companies decide to absorb the higher costs and quote right. The point of this is your next phone. Might be ever so much more expensive or else it will have less features than otherwise would have had as brands cut things in an attempt to keep prices roughly the same..

IBM's Watson Illustrates Why Applying A.I. to Healthcare Is So Hard

"About a decade ago. Ibm rolled out watson. One of the earliest artificial intelligence systems out. There watson was a big deal for ibm. You might remember that even went on and absolutely crushed the human competition it was a milestone in how we think about our relationship to computers and ibm wanted to take that technology and apply it to helping doctors diagnosed and cure cancer. But things didn't exactly happen that way and last week we reported that ibm was exploring a sale of its watson health unit. So what happened. And what does this tell us about the challenges of applying ai to healthcare for answers we turn to our digital science editor daniella hernandez hate mail. Thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me. So whereas watson now and what happened well i mean the struggles at ibm with watson. Been around for a little while. We reported in two thousand eighteen that the technology was really not getting the market share and adoption that it needed to make good on all the investments in all the acquisitions that ibm made in order to make watson a leader in the ai in healthcare field and so three years or so later it signals that you know the technology maybe wasn't working as well as they would have hoped. I think more. Broadly points to the fact that you know just having data or collaborations with leading scientists around the country. That just isn't enough and the reason is you know. Healthcare is complicated. So there's a lot of human issues at stake here. You know people do things differently. Like depending on which hospital you're at louisville depending on which doctor you're you're you're seeing but also the data in healthcare is messy for some of those same reasons you know you might input into a medical chart differently than me and for an i i might as well be two completely different things and so just that standardization of the information is really critical but also really hard and so when ibm started making these huge investments in watson they started buying up all these companies that had a lot of seemingly great data and the data might have been perfect but those data were basically styles from each other. They couldn't talk to each other and they never quite figured out how to meld them together. So they were cohesive data set of product. That really could make good on the promise that they that they saw. Fortunately has never materialized. And of course we should note here. That ibm says that watson has had some successes and that they're still believers in that technology we've been talking about. Ibm's new ceo. Arvind krishna on the show and following. He's been trying to of revitalize this legacy company how the sale of watson health fit into his efforts. Well i think one huge thing that has changed since the birth of watson. If you will is that you've had these other huge not legacy players come into the field. You've got google facebook amazon even microsoft right which you might consider a legacy company but they really rebranded themselves to. They weren't as big when watson. I came on the scene. And so now you've got this against storied legacy company competing with these new players. Who when they started making investments in. Ai were a lot more nimble and so they made investments in what at the time seemed like really experimental ai technology and now looking back like deep mind. Google investing hundreds of millions of dollars in that that technology just basically took over the world and ibm didn't really invest in that technology at the time and now is behind because all the talent is has been sucked into google facebook amazon apple And so they're they're behind.

So that's what this ultimately is. It spits off spins off a little bit of a legacy part of the business. It gives them the chance to really focus on where they feel like the puck is going so to speak. Doesn't make me want to own IBM more now. No I don't think so I mean I probably honestly if I were shareholder. Maybe look at it as a nice time to cut bait and you know pull the old George Costanza. Leave on a high note But this really does go all the way back to the nineteen ninety s when former management identified the need to pivot away from. The reliance on hardware sales and really focus more on software and services. and. So what this will do ibm the new IBM will focus on it's it's open a hybrid cloud platform which. Represents a massive massive opportunity I mean that's one trillion dollar opportunity which. I listen I. Mean we talk about large growing market opportunities all the time, and that's obviously a big. So you can't you can't neglect. Considering that and The spinoff company the yet to be named company. I don't know that I. Feel. So strongly about one that's focused more on managing and modernizing client owned infrastructures, I mean it's a big market opportunity but is it just legacy IBM businesses never really been compelling to begin with?

"Billion and IBM, spinning off its managed infrastructure services unit into a public company could be focusing now. On. Presumably, it's cloud a business to get some sense of what this means for big blue. We welcome anorak Rana Sr technology analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence. He's been covering this stock forever. He knows a thing or two about ideas. So Thanks for joining us here. What is the managed Infrastructure Services unit for IBM that it is spinning off. So we'll think about that. This is the leg legacy idea. Outsourcing business that is on the decline. This is where companies give idea. You know they have entire infrastructure to run or infrastructure to run. Hand over the past 10 years. You know, this has been a declining business as companies shut down their data centers or move them to either echolocation facilities or the public cloud. What about the idea of sort of spitting it out and having a go public and I do think that they looked at other options and that this was the best option. I mean, I know there's no way for me to know if they looked at other options, but one of the options I think it would have been is you know, there's a company called Dxy Technology, You know it bought. It was a combination of CSC and IBM, HP services old outsourcing business. You know, down the road. We thought that would be an area where you know you could see this business go. But thank you. Dixie has a lot of problems of its own right now. I doubt they could have, you know you know about anything so spinning this off probably makes the most sense to this point. All right. So on rock now the what remains at IBM. It appears that the come he's really trying to focus on the cloud business. And I remember they bought red hat Ah while ago So is this the kind of the strategy here for IBM to really try to Double down and on the cloud business, which is one of the big growth areas in technology. Yes, In fact, you know, lucky timing on our part. We don't note last week, saying exactly the same thing that you know, IBM has not seen the benefit ofthe very high valuation. For example, you know, idea, but I've had about 34 billion back in 2018. That was around nine times, you know forward, But if you look at you know the forward sensor estimates for all the software stock that has gone up tremendously over the last 6 to 9 months. Idea hasn't seen any benefit about its market Captain's remained kind of flat from 2018 even till now, so spinning off the local businesses could unlock value for shareholders. And and really bring red hot to the forefront. Donna, right? This is Arvind Krishna's first big move, presumably as it's being deemed a success. You know, he looked to something else now. Will he make some other major decisions like this? It is the fourth major Of transformation for the company and its history. I think you know, instead of a good job life because he was hey was behind the raid had acquisition to begin with that wass a good deal and again. You know what happened since then was, you know the world has become a different place when it comes to growth rates off. Older legacy technology businesses, and we have not seen the benefit of that. You know that had continues to grow it about 20%. But you don't see that an idea ins valuation. So this is another good moving on you, But, you know, frankly, I think that has a little bit more to be done that a few other businesses that God Slow growth businesses. I'm not sure why didn't you point them along with this particular segment, But, you know, potentially, this could bring IBM back into growth and the next Two years, so you know under something changes dramatically. On a rock in the world of Cloud computing. We think Amazon. We think Microsoft Azure where it is IBM fit in there. And can they in fact? Be a big player in the space. So think about it two different ways. But when it comes to IBM when it comes to Amazon Web service things and Microsoft and Google Google about that from giving the basic services for somebody to host that obligation. What idea is helping clients is more on those legacy customers. It's already have it had had his customers and they want to move their applications to either their own private cloud or one of the public clouds like the ones you mentioned, so I didn't all about consulting and helping them move some of that in some of their assets into the clouds. I think IBM best bet is to work very closely with those hyper skin cell provider's rather than fighting against it, and that's what they're doing right now. IBM expecting $2.3 billion charge for the spin off that about right? Not going to see any any changes in credit rating or anything like that, Ari. I haven't had a river I got you're going to find accrediting and talked on it. But that seems to be actually a very reasonable charge. Given what the size of this move of its its a $20 billion business, approximately $20 billion business that they're spinning off. So that's that's very reasonable of you. Real quickly. 20 seconds. Stocks up 7%. What's the bullish call on IBM right here? Abolish. Karl is very simple Hat has the value of that hide in our view right now is north of 50 billion. They bought it at 34 billion. The value of IBM is Jimmy had a constant So if really IBM needs to, you know, clean up some of the bad businesses so that you know it can shine in a White House business can shine that would be reflecting on the overall growth of the business as well as the overall margins. Right? How much harder and much higher margin structure than some of the older businesses and I think that's what we need to see. All right, anorak. Thank you. Always wonderful to guess your input Following all of these companies so closely on a rag Rana is senior software and services analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence, joining us on the phone there and what is pretty much a red letter day for IBM, the fourth major transformation And it's 109 year history. It's trying to spin off its managed infrastructure services unit into a public company. Let's get some Washington D. C news now with her down.

IBM's Ginni Rometty is stepping down as CEO

"In corporate news. IBM says its longtime CEO. Genie is stepping down effective April. Sixth Rometty has served in that role since two thousand and twelve eight years Arvind Krishna. I know it's been tapped as her successor. IBM says remedy will remain executive chairman through the end of the year the stock rising on the news. Oh here's a look at how. IBM shares have performed under remedies tenure. In the eight years but she will have been there through that time under the during that time we could see right there. It's down by about about twenty three percents it's been a a saga and it involved. It involved massive turnaround people like Warren Buffett. Who probably I believe when he was in the stock and I I've had some other people? I guess I won't go into people that all along said look. The revenue is not is not rising zing. And it's not goodbye hit other people and I think Jeff's Asana thought it was gonNA come out and make the case. It was very difficult to position. IBM for the future is in a difficult spot. Somebody said to me you didn't think about it. Initially someone said Oh. Is this a laugh glass cliff situations and I said I don't think so from you know they talk about. Sometimes when women are put in positions of companies how position on fixable position with Yahoo far they wrote articles about Mary Barra being put in this position. GM borrows done very well or this is at the time when she got the job. You would have never known how difficult it was ask. Because their predecessors appeared to be rockstars and yet they really left her holding the bag the whole time was trying to get rid of what she called. The was at the calories Sir revenues revenue that was not profitable and that was not going to be. This isn't even trying to transition like a Microsoft future. which was when did that camera? Nineteen eighty eighty or something this the fifties and sixties in big blue and John Acres and it had had to be repositioned a couple of times. Already Gerstner I had to come in Palmisano. Had to come in and turn it around so I mean have. IBM to even know what it is anymore. How about digital equipment? Anyone remember member digital equipment. How about data general about signed computer? How about what was that? Novell remember the biggest high flier in the world was novell and they're just totally elite. It's been tough and there are some people that think with Whiter. Seren Red Hat. Maybe it's position well for the future so I don't think we can. We can talk. I take away. Yes sharing that in Sonnenfeldt said that's not the first time journal says that's an interesting issue but how to measure her tenure. You're by the way you should. I mean you probably have the same emails than I did. There's so many people in the CEO Community who love her Jamie diamond. Tim Cook I mean the list goes on and on I think talking do. She's on the show. This is round table with Jamie but in terms of measuring her legacy legacy. You're either gonNA say she kept the company alive at a time when it was a real struggle or if you if you have a less generous view she didn't do what you what could have done so counterfactual I mean you really have to think you're in a position to take one of these legacy company that has a mainframe in frame or whatever it was. There's a lot of examples of companies that do something in the old days. They didn't become facebook Google. They didn't become even Microsoft. They didn't try new. Oh companies seem to take that man with guys in the guys in their garage. Just tell del there in the garage and they figure it all out under subtly. It's even better than the previous thing and even have. IBM still around in playing in the cloud as a viable competitor. And I don't know I don't know how to measure.
