"arthur knight" Discussed on History Unplugged Podcast

"The history unplugged podcast. Scholars and researchers have been searching for the real King Arthur ever since his legends were popularized in the Middle Ages. While nobody takes his Supernatural elements of the arthurian legend at face value like the sword in the stone or Merlin's magic, there are many candidates for a real life Arthur, or as some call him an Arthur liked figure. Many people think that he was a Romano British leader who fought against the invading Anglo saxons, sometime in the late 5th to early 6th century, as the Romans were pulling out of Britain. This is a very attractive theory because in one sense, it makes Arthur a transitional figure, somebody who sort of takes the civilization baton from the Romans and passes it off to the English. But for nearly a century, others have argued that the real-life Arthur wasn't a Roman soldier at the winning days of the empire, but actually served at the height of the empire under Marcus Aurelius. That's exactly what today's guests argue. John Matthews and Linda malcor, author of artorias, the real King Arthur, argues that the man whose story started the traditions of Arthur was a soldier named lucius artorius castus, who lived at the end of the second century. And although he spent time on the British island, his adventures took him way beyond it. He traveled from one end of the empire to the other, bringing him into contact with tribespeople amongst the steppe nomads, in particular the sarmatians. Vargas argue are the inspiration behind Arthur's knights of the round table. In this episode, we get into history and myth making and how we peel back that many onion layers of identity to figure out if the greatest king who ever lived really ever lived. Who enjoyed this discussion with John Matthews and Lindsay Malcolm. And one more thing before we get started with this episode, a quick break for a word from our sponsors. We're going to peel back many layers of the onion that is the King Arthur legend. But before we get to the innermost layer, let's take a good look at this onion that we know and love. First of all, could you briefly describe the King Arthur legend in its final form that inspires the movies that we know. And this would be the version that coalesced from the 13th to 15th centuries, especially the writings of Thomas Mallory. And we have companion episodes of listeners are more curious about this, but very briefly, could you describe the final form of the arthurian legend that most listeners would be familiar with? Well, I think most people will know that most of the basic storyline, which is the boy, brought up in ignorance of his parentage, who is really the son of the king. Who draws the sword from the stone and becomes king who founds the round table where all the best nights in the world come and marry guinevere, which gives him problems later on because she falls in love with lancelot, and he retired, and lancelot is the greatest knight at the round table. So all of these things, I think, are pretty familiar to people. I mean, we're looking at medieval stories that emphasize the importance of chivalry, the laws of chivalry, the order of chivalry in the way people behave, which, by the way, doesn't really always reflect the way people really did behave, but it was a kind of idealized version of the way you should behave if you were a knight. In other words, if you a member of the nobility and it starts out really mostly with Jeffrey Monmouth, in the 12th century leading on through a number of romantic stories shall we say Mallory, Thomas Mallory really, who's 15th century, picked up everything that was in between and wove it into a narrative that is more like a modern novel. In some ways, I'd say it was perhaps the first novel that we have knowledge of in English. So he really did put all of the stories together into a whole and included the grail story and then you get to the end and what's called the dolorous death and departing of the knights of the round table in their famous last battle. So there's a lot there that you do find coming up in movies and TV series although and I worked on a laser version which came out in 2004, just called King Arthur, which in fact is based on the same Siri as the book. We've just written. This version of Arthur was criticized by historians who thought that he was too French. Most famously, JR Tolkien, in this final form, Arthur has all the hallmarks of high medieval culture, particularly French culture, courtly love between lancelot and guinevere, but earlier versions of Arthur are Anglo Norman. If you get before the gal Freudian poems, this gets into the pre Norman conquest, Welsh poems and tales, there's a different Arthur that's there. And one of the most cryptic references, this is the oldest claim reference Arthur comes from a collection of Welsh poems that dates to the 6th century where there's one stanza that praises a brave warrior who killed multiple enemies, but despite this, the poem says he was no Arthur. And it raises so many questions. It's like having a elderly relative who claims that he has a grandfather who saw president John Tyler in 1840. There's just so much shadow and so much mystery, but can you describe the older versions of Arthur that exist before the final form emerges? That pum is called Iguodala. And the godot and people lived north of Hadrian's wall. So it's been transported down to wills from the north. And the Welsh material actually is later. It's been translated from the French, the works of perty and de trois are you can see his parseval has been converted into the Welsh stories. There are collection of Celtic stories that you shouldn't really rely on when you're studying Celtic books. Because they are so late. The Irish material is a better source for that. But interestingly, the Irish material does not contain any stories of Arthur. It's something that's only from the British Isles, another early source is a collection of materials that was compiled by a named menias. And he has in chapter 56 has a reference to Arthur that says Arthur was a duke's and he fought alongside the kings of the Britain, but he was not one of them. So that was around 1800, early 9th century. And before that, we really, we get the name Arthur in different things, but we don't have anybody who's been really identified as a historical figure. You have lots of people identifying anybody who has a name Arthur saying that's the original. And we don't think so. We don't think that's the original Arthur. We think those people had their stories combined with that of the original Arthur. So you have many, many arthurs, just that there's the one we write about is the one we think is the first. And certainly, certainly, could add to that that, you know, a lot of the early Celtic stories. I'm thinking particularly of something like killer canola in, for instance, and which is older than the other stories contained in the map in which I think is what you were referring to in the yes. There are some older bits in there, and they do kind of suggest a much more rigorous,

"Know, ten years ago in that direction. But yeah, selfishly sticking back to the horror thing. I think goes wire Tokyo had the style, but that's it. And hopefully this can have a more balanced delivery here, whatever this thing is. Whenever I hear about a new game from these people, I'm listening. This is mikami studio mikami who did receivable four right? I might be mixing the plant lineage, but I would like to see them keep doing their horror stuff, but it's like, man, they could. They probably have a lot of people who've worked on a lot of different games. If this is going to be a smaller side project, that is supposed to be something different. That would be nice. And then yeah, get back to making the big horror games that tingle game works is known for at this point. Hey, maybe it's a Silent Hill game as well. I mean, we saw those reports that yo, you want to make a Silent Hill. Here you go, buddy. Here's the keys. Yeah. I think that's likely, right? Everybody gets to make a Silent Hill game, just send it out to everybody. They're open for franchise. It's like a Dunkin Donuts. Microsoft's Activision acquisition could actually lead to some interesting reveals in court from Sony. Microsoft has subpoenaed Sony as part of its defense against the FTC, which is trying to block the acquisition. Sony was instrumental in sort of bringing up a lot of problems that it had with that potential acquisition. And so to help fight against this, Microsoft saying, we need to know what you have coming out so we could show that so we can know for sure whether or not you really can compete or not. And so the idea is that Sony may have to submit everything that it's working on to the court. Now this stuff will likely be redacted, but this is one of the risks that Sony ran and fully understood that it might be end up in the situation. Although, I guess we'll see if the court says, oh yeah, you can subpoena Sony and Sony does have to bring it or not. But yeah, is this how you guys want to get all the news about what Sony's working on? Sure. Is it a little bit of collateral damage here? Yeah. It's one way to get them, huh? What's the tiny bit of mutually assured destruction, right? This little tiny bit. Oh, if it is redacted stuff, then we can kind of start guesstimating about like, okay, that looks like it is neck three. That is neck four. Yes. I think that I think they forgot to redact the top serif of something. Let's look at it, get fire up your best unredacted apps, and we will have a go at it. What word is this likely to be? And it'll just make something up, but literally it just says God of War. Kill zone 6. What? Mark cerny's ear simulator? All right. They're making another 1889. The order was it 1888, or 1888. 1880 6, close. You were very close. Right there. Hey, listen, I get that game of 7 out of ten and regret it. I wish it would have gave it an 8 out of ten. That game looks really good. I'll give you that. Should I play that? Yes, yes. Yes. Dude, look, I'm, I think I'm more on the side with you grub. I think that game is a 7 and a half out of ten. Yeah, fair enough. Okay, yes, that's probably where it is. That game looks all right. It wasn't the most compelling, but it kind of made you feel like you were like in the prestige for a little bit. That was fun. You play as the knights of King Arthur's court, but I like in the 18 hundreds, but you're all like Tesla boys. Someone's named Arthur, that's like a title you take on, like when you become the lead of the team, you become Arthur and you have what's the other names of King Arthur's knights. Yeah, there's a lancelot. There's a Larry. The order 1886 is one that we could probably play in like a couple of sessions. Like if we wanted to have like a stream week, we could play the order 1886 and I think yeah, you should play that. I think the campaign's like four, four hours, you know, it's something real. 18. Now it might be a little longer than that, but and there's a whole blimp scene I remember too, which was. Oh, hold on. Interesting. Hold on. Yeah. I would go back there. I would go back to that world. They should make another one. Hey, hey, so it came out in February 20th, 2015. We could play it for the 8 year anniversary. Yes, let's do it. Celebrate 1886. There we go. Hey, everybody. We're getting together to celebrate 8 years of the order 1886. I love it. I reviewed that game. I've been reviewing games for a while. Okay. Okay, so some people found a Nintendo patent for an AR system that showed a dog inside of it. She had a dog in the AR thing. And so people were like, well, obviously this means Nintendo is making an AR nintendogs game for your phone, right? Not necessarily. Almost certainly not. That was just the patent, but that is something they patented a while ago. They've used that technology, though, and stuff like animal crossing for a pocket camp for the phones. So they have already used it and it had nothing to do with ten dogs. This happens all the time though, right? The company's patent something, they have an illustration that shows what it looks like. And then people extrapolate from the, that illustration, and it almost never pans out to be what actually ends up happening, right? Yeah, a 100%. Like,

"Yeah there's a scene Him his uncle have a have a bad relationship that has mentioned he needs to forgive him and then he talks about his complicated family history. So we'll break down all those individually in the comics. Dane whitman inherited his uncle's castle nathan garrett and he didn't know that his uncle had been a villainous black knight until finding notes and inventions in the castle and then he came across the ebony blade and passing the tests here the surp- passed tests and sir percival explained the history of the blade and its curse he took the weapon and decided be a hero and he joins the masters of evil just as uncle dead but his intent is to infiltrate them from within and then he did it to help the avengers. They did not trust him until later. He assisted them in battling the conquer so anyway in this movie at danes birthday party source tells him that he should forgive his uncle. Who in the comics like i said was villain the black knight the original black knight and thought the avengers dane eventually takes on the same mantle black knight but as a hero so he opens the box. And it's got the same emblem on it. That his ring that was given to him by sir she had with the raven the lid once he opens it. He sees the english in english translated. English from latin. death is my reward. It also has carvings of nights on it because dane had an ancestor sir. Percival who is one of the king king arthur's knights of the round table so in the c. You this movie reveals that. The stories of king arthur and excalibur are real. There's a moment in the movie. Where theme tell sprite at one. Point that she's holding excalibur and sprite says that arthur always had a crush on you so they they basically you're saying in in the king arthur and excalibur and probably lady of the lake and all this stuff it's true and as he's opening the box we hear like these evil whispering sounds and then we get a look at the sword. It's a black sword and there's like this moving organic almost like venom symbiosis substance on it and the writing. Death is my reward which was carved by one of his ancestors because in the comics the sword ebony blade is actually cursed and in the comics that was created and carved by merlin from a meteorite that hit the earth so he made the sword for sir percival. Who has actually sir. Percival was the original black knight and he was instructed that the sword could only be used by someone who was pure of heart and that wasn't true it was the exact opposite it can only really be wielded by someone in pure of heart so it's like the opposite of like me. Eleanor the opposite of worthiness. So someone evil which is why some people are thinking that we might see this sword being used by gore. the god butcher inthorp thunder christian. Bale's playing god butcher enthused eleven thunder and we might see gordon. God butcher used the sword in some flashback scenes. But i'm not one hundred percent sold on that..

"I'll walk out, I'll do it. I'll say, brother, you gone too far this time. I renounce my title. I'll fight to the death for her honor. Kaye said. Gawain, he vain, and the other is nodded in agreement. Yeah. If Arthur announced guinevere's death today, that was it for them. They were gone, man. Lancelot listened. His palm sweaty, and his heart thumping. Unlike the others, he knew what he was going to do today. Any dishonor comes to the queen, I'll fight three men at the same time. Lancelot said. Quieting the group. Case it. Three men. All talk. You want to be the fourth? Lancelot sneered? K was about to open his mouth. When the horn blew. They looked the field. Lancelot saw guinevere, and his heart dropped. She had been living in that dress for a month. It was grimy and worn from the dungeons. Her hair was streaked with dirt. She just looked. Frayed. She didn't look to the crowd. She didn't look anywhere, but the ground. Arthur called out to the people. This was held in a field so all could come here the verdict. The queen would not be killed. Lancelot heard an exhale from the knights around him. Arthur said he was generous. She would merely be exiled. She had lied. She had taken on the role of queen without right. And so all sacramental marks of Queen would be removed. She would have her hair removed. The night said that that was a little harsh, but it would grow back. And the skin flayed from the top of her head, where The Crown set. Further, since she received a 19 on her hands, her palms and her fingertips would also be flayed. After that, she should leave Arthur's lands and never return. That's a lot look to the other nights. Big man all of you. Oh, if he does this, we're going to leave. We're going to stand up and fight, and then it happens and you what? Shamefully swallow your words. Even you, Gawain? Disgraceful. Lancelot pushed forward, jump the short barrier, and walked out onto the field. The crowd grew silent as walking up, lancelot unhooked his ermine cloak and threw it in the mud. He got closer to guinevere, undid his armor, and took off the colors that designated him as a knight of the round table. He threw those on the ground, too. A gasp went up. Arthur stood, as a night of the round table, lancelot was to pick up his mantle and return to the others. Lentil it pointed to the ground. That was the point of him throwing down his mantle, symbolism. He was renouncing the round table, Arthur's household Arthur's kingdom. He was doing it because he was challenging this ruling. The night's watched him. Joe slack. that? Leave the round table. They all thought it was like the mob once you were in it. You were in it for life. This. Wow. Arthur really messed up here. Arthur, it turned out, couldn't just ignore a challenge to his ruling. Especially from one of his best nights. Even a queen declared guilty of treason, had the right to a trial by combat. God would decide who was right. It would take place before the king's tower and Camelot. With Arthur and G two watching on the field, and one of your captive in the tower. Since none of the knights of the roundtable would fight their own, for now, Arthur had to scrounge up other challengers. And since lancelot was not only a now former night at the roundtable, but the best of them. One wouldn't do. Lancelot would fight three, and it was only through galaha working out the deal that lancelot didn't have to fight all of them at the same time. Though he was more than excited and ready to do so. Galahad also worked something else out. On the big day, when the nights in the barons and the common people who were brave enough to scale the castle walls for a good view looked on the battlefield, the guards that were supposed to be with guinevere were stopped. They found themselves staring up at galahad. Who said that they wouldn't be needed here? As the night of the round table, he would be responsible for guinevere, Romanian prisoner. And since the guard and his group weren't needed here, how about they take the day off? Go have a drink. Maybe taking a brutal death match. His treat. He dropped a bag of coins into the guard's hand, and the man was more than happy to let galahad in his nights take over watching the queen. Galaha took his place next to guinevere. Now captive in her own room. Looking down at the battlefield, where lancelot was being dressed by his squire, and the night fighting on behalf of her husband, took his seat in the saddle. Gal hut said everything was in place. Lancelot would win this one, of course, but if he didn't, or if the impostor didn't keep her word. His knights had secured every path to the docks. They were ready to cut through anything in any one for their freedom. One way or another, one of you was leaving Camelot tonight. After the first joust when lancelot impaled the first of Arthur's knights through his shield and armor, guinevere and galaha breathed. After a lancelot pulled his Lance out of the dead knight, he and horse the second almost as quickly, though not as fatally. The man panicked when his horse bolted, but lancelot laughed. He calmly got down from his horse and tied it to a tree. He wouldn't be accused of being dishonorable. He drew his sword. Let's do this. Arthur's knight drew his own sword, and then dropped it, shrieked, and then darted off for the wall. He was done with this. He was going to jump into the sea. Lancelot realized what was happening in a second and save the man from the dishonor of running away and drowning by catching his armored foot, and yanking him from the wall. The man raised his shield, but neither it. His helmet, or his skull, helped him all that much. Lancelot wiped his sword and found his horse. Seeing how things went for the first two and one in an advantage, the third night aimed his Lance not for lancelot, but for lancelot's horse, trying to kill it, so lancelot would fall, and he would be striking out from above. He did hit lancelot's horse, but lancelot hit him. So both dropped to the ground without amount. They drew their swords, and the third battle began. And kept going. And continued. After about an hour, two things became clear. One, this guy had done a pretty good job of holding his own against lancelot until that was not going to continue. Lancelot had him on the ropes. And by the ropes, I mean he had him next to the blood spatters, the guy who went before him, and it was only the third night's skillful blocks that kept him from ending up the same way. As the knights clashed outside, Arthur found that the nights that guarded guinevere wouldn't let him through. In his own castle. He heard an. It's fine. From galahad. In the night's part. For the first time in 5 months, Arthur stood before his wife. When he had left her, thinks had been bad but not flay your hands bad. Still, he knew her. He knew that she was a decent person, and he knew that she didn't want any more nights to die. But what are you going to do for her? Galahad stepped in between them. Arthur said excuse me, but he's trying to have a conversation with his wife here. She's not your wife, you have very clearly and publicly stated, galahad replied. If Arthur wanted this night to live, guinevere would live. She would have safe passage from these lands. She would be allowed to take her ladies and leave in peace. Arthur said that that was fair. He could do that. Would.

"15 years later, Arthur saw guinevere smile for the first time in weeks. A message I come in from lancelot and galahad. Arthur supposed that he should be grateful that the trio was such good Friends. Galaha was a knight, because of guinevere and lancelot. Instead of a half giant that would have absolutely taken over his lands less than a year prior. In fact, with Arthur's knights spread out all over the place, when galaha came riding into town at the head of an army, demanding Arthur's throne, Arthur didn't have any other choice, but to send his champion, lancelot, out against the man. What happened next was as confusing as it was fortuitous, at least for everyone watching. Galaha lancelot's face after he unhorsed the young man, winning the kingdom and galaha yielded. The night that towered over the rest, bowed before the queen, who had run to lancelot's aid at the trial, and the three had been inseparable since. Except, you know, when they separated, when lancelot and gal hat went to Brittany, to fight to take back lancelot's ancestral kingdom. Now there was a prophecy about some, I don't know, cup or something. It's in a messenger asking for wise men. An Arthur, though he didn't quite understand why the kid in the giant palling around with his wife rubbed him the wrong way, he had to admit that he was happy they hadn't come in person. Oh, sorry, dear. Looks like your Friends aren't coming home. Arthur said to his wife, who burst your lips and smiled. I guess they'll be out there keeping your realm safe going to be replied. Their nights. That's literally their job, Arthur said. And then waved. All right, who was next? There was a woman with a flowing dress. A night walked behind her. He had a gray beard down to his chest, a scarred face, and an absolutely just jacked arms and chest. He looked as whether it is an old tree and about as tough as one, too. He walked at the head of ten nights, who refused to take off their armor before walking into the throne room at their head was a veiled woman. Arthur looked her up and down, then smiled himself. When she stood before the king, she took off her veil and flung it to the ground. The men in attendance took one look at her face, and almost threw themselves at the veil. Wanting to do their courtly duty and pick it up for the woman. They stopped, though, when they saw the hand that clasped it. King Arthur raised it to the woman's face. She dropped this. And he had to say, she was the most the second most beautiful woman in the world. Still all smiles, Arthur had know what she wanted to ask of him. He would offer her anything right off the bat, the king wise, that's a rookie mistake. Always wait to hear the request. Her request was simple. Read a letter. Arthur said of letter? Sure. Yeah, he opened it. The woman put her hand on Arthur's. He made it clear he didn't mind, but he was granting her request. She said no. The request was that he read it out loud. Arthur handed it off to one of his courtiers. And sat back to listen. It told a story. A story about a bride disappearing for an hour on her wedding night. Never returning. Of a trip down to the dungeons, and another taking her place. About how Arthur's true wife, the Rio guinevere. Had cried for days. But upon realizing that she had been forgotten, escaped. She discovered that she had been replaced by an impostor and left Camelot. She could have married again. She could have lived a life, but she didn't want just any life. She wanted the one that was stolen from her, with the man that she loved. She found her way, though. She had the beauty and grace of a queen, and that attracted the right people. This night here was her champion. His men, hers. She now formally accused the impostor, and she demanded justice. You dare accuse your queen of such a crime, one of your cried? Oh, but is she here? The messenger said, looking around with a smile. Okay, this is complicated. Arthur said, holding up his hands for silence. Complicated. I have been your wife for 15 years. Going to be your sat back. So it shouldn't be too hard to defend yourself against these probably baseless charges. I'm the king and this is a formal request. You know I have to accept her case. Arthur shrugged. Probably baseless. One of your couldn't believe what she was hearing. Arthur ground look. She was his wife. She was the queen. It was a ridiculous assertion, but not without some grounding, in fact. She did disappear for an hour on their wedding night. A gasp went up from some of the berets in the back. Going immediately stepped in whispering for the king and the queen that they should probably take this discussion offline. Things were getting private in here. Guinevere, though, stood and stormed from the hall. Arthur shook his head and turned back to the beautiful stranger with a smile. He was sorry she had to see that. Yes. At Christmas, he would be at Carlisle. He would hear the case and render.

The romanticized version of the American cowboy, tin stars, quick draw gunfights, saloons on dusty streets, and unending desert landscapes wouldn't hold such a firm place in our consciousness. If not for the infamous showdown, now known as the gunfight at the okay corral. You know, the one between tough knows lawman and some hard headed outlaws in the town of tombstone, near the Mexican border in the Arizona territory. But just to clarify, the shootout wasn't even in a corral at all. It took place in a vacant lot next to a photo studio in a boarding house. The second point of clarification, nobody ever called the standoff, the gunfight at the okay corral. Until Hollywood's sunk its claws into the story, with 1950 7s Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas blockbuster titled gunfight at the okay corral. Which you have to admit does sound way cooler than gunfight in a vacant lot. But in true wild west movie fashion, the cast of the real-life fight is easily broken into two groups. The good guys were the lawman in an otherwise lawless part of the Arizona territory. They were tombstone marshal, Virgil earp, his brothers, Morgan and Wyatt, both officially special policemen, and temporary policemen, John Henry Doc Holliday. The bad guys were a group known as the cowboys, a cow ruslan horse thievin group, a no good cusses. They were Billy claiborne, brothers, Ike and Billy Clinton, and brothers, Frank and Tom mclaury. And these two groups hated each other. Long story short, a between 1879 and 1880, tombstones population exploded with prospectors, searching for silver ore, and the town needed law enforcement. A town leaders wanted men like Virgil and Wyatt Earp, because they had solid reputations as gunfighters and lawmen. But the acquaintance and mclaury families who were prominent ranchers formed their own coalition known as the cowboys. The cowboys didn't recognize Virgil earp as Marshall, or his legal authority, and the cowboys despised the fact that earp and his lawmen often used possibly extra legal methods to enforce the law. In late 1881, it was against the law to carry weapons within the tombstone town limits. A Virgil earp let that be known to the cowboys. And that's how things started that day. After some threats and two pistol whippings by the herbs. The two groups squared off at about three p.m. on October 26th. A most estimates put the two groups, not much farther than 6 feet or two meters apart. There were plenty of handguns present. Holiday carried a shotgun. Before the article this episode is based on, how stuff works spoke with Marshall trimble. Arizona's official state historian. He said, when the cowboys came into town and Billy Clinton saw his brother Ike had been hit, and Frank saw his brother Tom had been cocked, and they were spoiling for a fight then. They made open threats that they were going to kill the herms. They were overheard, and that's what saved the earps and dock from maybe going to a murder trial. And here we jump ahead to the firsthand witness account of John H bean. He was the sheriff of cochise county, a political rival to the earps and a friend to many of the cowboys, and one of many interviewed afterward during a hearing into the gunfight. This transcript is courtesy of the Arizona memory project. Quote, when they got to the party of cowboys, they drew their guns and said you sons of you have been looking for a fight and you can have it. Someone of the party I think martial earp said throw up your hands, we are going to disarm you. Instantaneously with that, the fight commenced, and there was around some 25 to 30 shots fired. Dozens and dozens of accounts have been written on the fight, and many relying on firsthand accounts like this. Some say that at least one of the cowboys was unarmed. Others refute that claim. A question arose as to who fired the first shot, and who shot whom? But the toll of the gunfight is not in question. Once everything had quieted down three cowboys, Billy Clinton, just 18 or 19 years old at the time, and both mclaury brothers were dead. The fight lasted no more than 30 seconds. The lawman weren't without their injuries, though. A trimble said, in the end, Morgan earp almost had a fatal wound, the bullet just missed his spine, but it went right clear through his back. A Virgil took a hit in his leg, and Doc just got a scrape. Wyatt came through without a scratch, and just like he does in the movies. Four days after the fight, Ike Clayton, who had fled once bullets started flying, accused the earps and holiday of martyr, and tombstone justice of the peace wells Spicer held a hearing into the throwdown. Being back to the cowboys, but others supported the earps and holiday. The verdict may have hinged on the testimony of one Addy, borland, a local dressmaker, who contradicted the cowboys claim that they had their hands up and should not have been fired upon. The Spicer eventually found that the earps and holiday were well within their rights and declared that no trial was necessary. Ike Clayton bent on revenging the death of his brother and the other cowboys is generally thought to be behind the assassination attempt on Virgil earp in December of that year. And the murder of Morgan earp, who was gunned down in a tombstone billiard club in early 1882. After Morgan's killing, Wyatt Earp attracted down some of the Clayton's cohorts when killing a couple. Clayton was killed by a detective in springerville, Arizona territory. In 1887, while resisting arrest. Wyatt was the last of the okay corral survivors. He died in Los Angeles in 1929 at age 80. The gunfight gained near mythic status in 1931, after Stuart Lake, a former press agent for president Theodore Roosevelt and a Hollywood writer. Interviewed Wyatt, and published a loose biography, titled Wyatt Earp, frontier Marshall. Then came the movie and a TV series on why earp's life and times ran from 1955 to 1961. Among the actors who have portrayed Wyatt are Henry Fonda in May darling Clementine from 1946, a Burt Lancaster in the 1957 movie, James Garner, an hour of the gun in 1967, a Kurt Russell in tombstone in 1993. Kevin Costner and wide ARP in 1994 and Val Kilmer in Wyatt Earp's revenge in 2012. The trimble said, I think it's the psychology that people like to believe that a good guy can't be that good. And why it wasn't. Wyatt had a little shady past, all of them did. I tell people these were sporting men. They ran around prostitutes, gambled, hung out with an unsavory lot. But why it came from a good family? Why it was a whole lot better than the others, and he was just a product of his time. Tourists now stream into tombstone to see reenactments. And beyond tombstone, that face to face showdown between a lawless bunch of cowboys and a hardened bunch of lawmen has given Arizona and the entire west, a huge part of its identity. A larger even than that, for many visitors, the gunfight is a snapshot of America. A tremble said, a gunfighters are America's rendition of King Arthur's knights of the round table. People are fascinated by them, because they had a code of their own. And it's an independence, a free spirited independence. It's what everybody wishes they could be, but aren't..

"Involved in the baseball. Yeah we'll find out there on both sides. Yeah in that regard. Meanwhile i was really surprised this. I thought we'd spend the entire episode sort of like what happened in travelers. Yeah sack ending triangle episode back in the past but instead we cut forward to moulder hanging out. Scully bring him this giant newspaper book. I never seen one of these before. So this is how they bind old newspapers and put them in archives. So if you ever like go usually can't take them out of the library though by. We're so used microfiche for that. They have that too but there's bound versions of them especially things like this. That are not It's just baseball. Stats gen scully. Stole it but i wonder to your point. How was she able to get it out of their huge organic are now. She's scholar and she also stopped on the way home to get a tow tone non-fat to- foodie rice dream. Stickle disgusting stay are. They live like crack sometimes right. Yeah oh scully. Sort of like new age in the way that she's healthy. Yes so like sheets. Tofu very nineties new. Agey eating habits so moulder and how. He has a lot of rice cakes very much so that was very popular on them. All the time moulders says initially that. He's looking for any notable obituaries in new mexico in the forties for like roswell reasons yeah and he eventually i don't think he's specifically the looking at the box scores but he says that likes to do it right well so i think that yeah. He's looking at nine hundred newspapers at roswell because he's like oh it might be interesting. We ended up looking at the box scores. Just because we know from the case this week might as well spend some time diving into newspapers weird and that's where he has no life and then he spots article. Basically that shows young arthur dales. He noticed him. I do like modern scully for lack of better term batting back and forth. Add robert to each other. Yes it is always a little bit funny. There's again there's very little skull this episode but there are some very good chemistry between them motor also like i don't know he's so loving about the idea of box score. The pythagorean theorem for using it. You could recreate the circumstances just by seeing what happened. She's like but she also starts the episode sort of standing on a stool looking out the window of the office because she just wants to go outside saturday. She's telling him like get alive watching baseball reading up on scores from fifty years ago. Yeah but he can't. He's mulder so those are the jails place what we've noticed like there's some sort of vagrant vagabond outside who i thought was dead. Yeah no it's like. There's a homeless person in the so. I guess like arthur dales lives in a slum like these awful but yeah he meets. Arthur jails brother who's also named stales. It's again this and then we let it go. And that's odd thing i've ever heard in my life and we have a little bit deeper into that in the beginning. So we don't need to rehash but Anyway he basically this m emmet. Walsh sort of character is amazing him. We waiting for his chinese food him. Just like holding up like we're trinkets in his apartment and him sort of like when moulder ask questions you just sort of response phrases like weird little. I believe that love can make a man's shape shifting so weird. But i like it. It's enjoyable. he's more poignant. I think i would say then details anyway. He basically asks moulder asks him. He's like oh so. Is this you or is this your brother in the thing and it goes back. When's dental it's me like Even though it looks exactly like me. Yeah he's like it's. It's me so i can tell you the story. And he basically starts flashing back to their first meeting him and actually in one thousand four to seven bright. So basically arthur dales. So arthur dales too is a member of the roswell police department which is good that they actually did create him as a brother because was other one. Where was he at this time now. We don't need to care about it. Yeah they're just happened to be two men around the same age who look exactly the same parts of the country yes basically. He is being assigned to protect actually because of the kkk situation to begin danger. So he's gonna essentially travel with the roswell love. Arthur dales yeah. He's like their bff and so he gets along really well with them. And it's all very fun. Yeah and so dale's though is gonna be it's gonna be nice initially but he's going to get a little perturbed by things like at one point there. Everyone's on the bus. He wakes up. Yeah he looks at sleeping in his reflection reflection as an alien. Yeah so. I guess He's reflected in the window as an alien which i guess is something. That's new took weird so do all shape. Shifter's have the reflection of an alien. Were intuition from him. No i think he's reflected as an alien doesn't make any sense. It's fine we're moving. Why vampires don't have for some reason reflections. Just make things weird. Yeah and there's also another weird instance where they are. Add game the next day and he's hit by a baseball pitch and he starts making strange like speaking in tongue and he starts talking about making georgia and then he's i bleed green blood. Oh yes so. He starts like talking in tongues and then he returns to ascend. They ask him where he's from and he says macon georgia and then dale notices. There's like the news on his his his glove that his head was resting on. So we should make a note. Here that arthur dales reveals to moulder that. All the great baseball players are aliens. This is absolutely ridiculous. This is another like episode though where things are sad where you're like what's true what's not true. So it reminds me of the summer so yes. Saddam hussein is actually an actor that they said whenever they want to rattle the say. Yes so like what happened. What didn't happen who's to say. I think that you know yes. Maybe he was with. This guy actually was actually an alien. Who the heck knows but just love this idea though that all. These aliens sought refuge in baseball because of their superhuman abilities. And yeah that's baseball players alive. We have on the side here. Actually who is a superhuman baseball player but tries to stay under the radar because he doesn't want attention brought to the fact that he's playing baseball because he knows that the alien bounty hunter will come and also he just wants to be like everyone else. Yeah and he knows he won't be able to continue to do that. Here's something absolutely wild. And frankly strange so bills ends up getting a his chinese food delivery from like a kid who looks like a page. Boy yeah overall. He's wearing a new that and then he's in the fifth the forties. He's the same boy. Don't out the entire episode. There's this little boy who looks like a newsy delivering chinese food playing around the baseball field and also at the end of the episode. He's the boy who is pulling the trigger on the driving. Range machine modern scholars. But there's never any explanation. I honestly don't even. I guess my assumption is that this kid is ageless. I think i'm not even sure what it's supposed to mean like. Who is it's nobody knows. Michael mckean alien to. I guess so but like i don't know this reminds me of the end of those dreamland stuffers only went back in time and scully still. Has the fuse together. Coins makes no sense. But i guess it's just a fun. Little quirk was wild because initially when he was in the one. Thousand nine hundred. I'm like this kid does not look like he fits in. This does not look like a child from the nineteen ninety s. And it's because he's literally the exact same outfit from when he was in the thirties. Yeah honestly i'm looking at it now. And i can't find anything about it so we'll have to if anybody knows there whereas any theories about what he might. I'm assuming i did this kid later. I did just read something. Fun that The basically the los angeles los angeles dodgers radio announcer. Vin scully played baseball announcer in this episode. Fun i'm to recruit him and that was scully's named for her inspiration for her name. Apparently wait really. Yeah it said whose name served.

"Will be my champion. The historical king. Arthur presided over an era of upheaval in crucial national change. The warring kingdoms and principalities of britain were divided in chaotic and arthur worked to unite them under a single consistent rule of law defined by the chevalier ideas that the strong should serve and protect the weakened defenseless. Meanwhile the traditional pagan worship at the celtic people was giving way to the new religion of christianity which preached love forgiveness and brotherhood. Instead of propitiate and superstition there are clear. Parallels between these two movements the worship of many bloodthirsty ancient gods giving way to one modern forgiving one and the rule of many warlike territories coming together under one enlightened kind ruler. You might say it's a surprisingly neat and orderly parallel which makes a certain amount of sense. Because it's all pretty much fiction. Historians are divided on whether a historical king arthur actually lived and if he did when he ruled and what israel looked like much like the traditional legend of the samurai their ashida code were largely nostalgic fiction invented by japanese writers looking back and inventing a more noble and prosperous age than the present they were dealing with king. Arthur was created as a legend to help define a tumultuous present director. John boorman was well aware of the dynamic when he made his nineteen eighty-one fantasy epic excalibur. Which adapts thomas malary's l'amour d'arthur as something like a gritty historical epic. Apart from the dueling wizards the magic spells. If there ever was an arthur for untold american cinema papers and the set of the film back in the nineteen eighties. He cited in about the sixth century. But the date is the least important really. I think of the story. The history is a myth. The film has to do with mythical truth not historical truth. It has to do with man taking over the world on his own terms for the first time. So the i trap to avoid is to start worrying about when or weather. Arthur existed the stories. That inspire us where actually fifteenth century works by thomas mallory and the rest looking back nostalgically on the twelfth unquote excalibur was part of the fantasy boom of the early nineteen eighties. The same post star wars way of colorful epochs. That gave us xanadu. Clash of the dragon slayer time bandits. The beast master conan the barbarian dr crystal and crow all in the span of just a couple of years but in spite of its keller's death magic and miss bells and its quest for magic cub. It's easily a most grounded of these movies. The one that at least reaches for some sort of historical wait in that same interview form said that what he was reaching for with a sense of humans acting legend without any idea that their deeds of lives would eventually become legendary. He described it as a kind of jr token style version of middle earth. Where everything we think of as the signifies of past romantic age is still new and contemporary quote. I wanted to have a primal clarity a sense that things are happening for the first time. Landscape and nature and human emotions are all fresh unquote. That certainly comes across in the themes of the film. And in the sometimes popeye performances. Where would be king bellows at his lost in his sorcery. Assistant lurks in sneers and purrs in the background. There's nothing a subtlety or internationally. We would see in a modern film. When young arthur played by nigel terry sets his eyes and gwen and decides he wants to marry her. He completely ignores everything his adviser. Merlin is trying to carefully implied him about looking ahead to the future when whenever hands emma symbolic hand pie and laces it with innuendo and flirting are casually. Stuffs it in his mouth while merlin is still mid metaphor when arthur gets frustrated with an upstart challenger. The french knight lancelot. He bellows out his rage and tries his utmost to kill landslide and then when he nearly succeeds he's equally performance of about his regret and shame. The movies are used to people who act on their impulses and forged stories by not holding back but the characters and excalibur particularly lusty and forthright breed. There's nothing moderated or hesitant or visibly choreographed frequent battles which feel chaotic in desperate messy. These are people who say what's on their minds or just as often howl it out like wolves approaching their prey and yet excalibur is openly about that of unrefined uncontrolled barbarians. Giving way to more civilized. Future it's also like any tale about the history of camelot about that. Civilised future ending about a dream. That couldn't last because people are too relentlessly driven by their desires. Boorman's film scripted by rospa pailin berg adapt mallory and covering arthur's life from his messy conception to his passing from the world not necessarily dead so much as waiting on call in a mystic eliminate space ready for britain vanita again. History starts when his father reuther pendragon played by bellowing. Gabriel byrne lusts. After another lord's wife and breaks a carefully brokered peace. In order to try to steeler then he browbeat says adviser merlin into setting him up so he can rape the woman while magically disguised as her husband merlin played with weird chop linking sensuousness by nicol williamson agrees as long as he gets to keep the resulting baby when arthur is born. Merlin spirits that baby away and arranges for him to be adopted and raised by nobleman until the time comes for him to drop thurs magical sword excalibur from the stone embedded and upon his death. This makes arthur the king of the britons but unlike in gentler versions the myth. The britain's don't immediately bow and buy in they go to war for their freedom and power and it's up to arthur and his followers to rally and dominate the rebel lords or win them over with nobility formed skipped past decades camelot rises and britain thrives under the health and goodwill of its king. Then gwen and lancelot get eckersley. Intimate in the forest arthur loses his wealth live his half sister mcconnell magically seduces him and produces a creepy sunday a serpent and everything falls apart until a mythic quest that destroys arthur's knights. One by one finally leads the humblest of mall percival to bring him the holy grail and remind him that he and the lander linked and that can't prosper until he returns to rule it. It's enough plot for eight seasons. A game of thrones packed in one hundred and forty minutes and absolutely stuffed with big meaningful literary symbolism at every turn from the imaging man literally getting his own doom so the montage of arthur's poor mother grain being roughly penetrated by author at the same moment that her husband is being penetrated by the spears of authors warriors. This isn't the kind of four quadrant. International markets say fantasy and make these days. It's an old school fantasy for adults with graphic sex and violence. It is in other words a lot a lot of blood a lot of big screaming emotion. A lot of over the top decision-making driven by uncontrolled is and a lot of memorable imagery meant to evoke an earlier age of wonder where everything people did was meaningful enough to become legendary. Merlin himself senses. That that age is ending. He tells more ghana when she comes to him for magic lessons and power. Our time is passing in the time of man is coming. The one god is driving out the mini gods he recognizes as so many people who've written or directed are three and stories have before the king arthur stories to represent a moment of vast and shifting change and justice. Those legends came from an era looking back nostalgically on a largely mythical past movie feels like a nostalgia piece itself for so many reasons. They don't make movies like us anymore. Maybe some future historian will make a movie about warm and making caliber and make the act of making this loud abashed messy film as mythic is the era. it's depicting.

"It was friday morning. Saint george's day and there was a feast waiting for him. Arthur pinched the bridge of his nose. Why was he doing this again. According to explain that he knew this was an inconvenience but she was very important. Lady as their heels clicked the cool stone floor the morning light above them catching dust motes floating through the air. Arthur said he understood that she was important but who was she the courtier paused he'd didn't rightly know. Arthur side is. He dropped into a seat. Fantastic would someone fine merlin. This was seeming more and more like his area. Arthur waved a hand catch the servant before he left on buddy mind. Get north or a gazillion of something. Anything didn't really matter. What but something to take the edge off nights festivities. They ran late again. The man nodded to king. Of course he rushed off. Arthur pushed back the encroaching headache. As he heard the doors lurch in the outer chamber he remember when he first saw this place is fortress. He had been little more than a boy then. Newly married the saxons freshly defeated. The land cheered his name. What had happened or the conqueror. The liberator became arthur the king. That's what happened. He was roused from thought on a goblet. Rang out upon touching his side table. Arthur took a deep drink of the warm red liquid. And when he said it down she was there. Arthur knotted to the woman who glanced around the hall saying that the hall was empty. You were unexpected. And a feast is at hand. Please ask what you will my lady. Arthur raised as goblet lady of the lake. The woman said or thir froze then set the goblet down without a sip. Lady of the lake. He turned to the attendant. Fine merlin. now he won't be returning for some time. The woman said arthur not of course not. He was never around when you needed him. The lady of the lake said that she was happy not to receive the welcome that one of the sisters of her order had years ago her three instinctively looked to the spot. One of his knights had beheaded lady of the lake. The spot where the head had rolled to a stop. That was an accident. Arthur started but the lady of the lake cut him off. It had happened in his court after another one of her sisters had given him excalibur arthur's hand fell to the mythical sword. Decide he was glad none of his nights when attendance. How can i make things right. The lady of the lake smiled this boy. He was eighteen night him. Arthur laughed night him seriously. He's a boy. Had even spent time. Page squire could he fight. Could this child stand alongside gwen vein k. Pella nor balan king listed names. The boy looked to the stone floor but the lady kept looking at king. Arthur earth groaned and took another long swig from his goblet fine. There was a ceremony tomorrow. Was that all with the lady of the lake. Be staying with them. The lady of the lake shook her head now. She had to leave at once. She had a prior engagement crossed. The channel arthur might have said that a simple no would have been fine. He didn't actually care. He was just being polite. He nodded to the lady in the boy tomorrow. Then when the king gone the lady and the boy were left alone the wide room that could hear the waves crashing against the rocks outside as the mid morning sun began to warm the stones. The lady of the lake turned to the boy her ward of eighteen years. She took his face into her hands and kissed his forehead and cheeks and is the story says when she finished the boy could see the tears trailing down her face. She held a handout. She said it was a ring. She said that this spring had the power to uncover and reveal all magical spells. It was a power that had saved her life once. It would help him on his travels. She told him that he will be the greatest of king arthur's knights sought after by all men and loved by all women if he meets a challenge that with all of his god given skills. He can't meet remember that there was no man born who could do so in his place the boy through his own tears. Carta highbrow wait. Was that encouraging. Just then they heard the at the far end. The boy turned and a tall blonde nights strode in the boy wave as the night walked up to him and said that this year was the foster mother who the man asked. The boy turned to where the lady had been standing. She was gone No one the boy said he bowed to the night. Okay well i am serious vain. The man said smirking and he waited and waited. The boy chimed in high given. What's going on even was confused. No cheering studio audience when a fan favourite enters different tone for these stories. Now different tone cool. Are we run that line. Well i'm sure you've seen the man said king. Arthur told me that you need someone to show you the ropes and drew the short straw. I mean wanted to help out the new guy. The boy though was distracted looking at the entryway far off. Who or what was that. That was just his lion best friend he had a fun little adventure ones where he saved a lion from a dragon and then the lions saved his life constantly so now he stays in veins apartment with him. "Likely never going to see it again. You look awful thank you. I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I don't know what i'm saying. I don't even know if it was me that killed those people last night. Don't remember doing it. What about the zoo. If i'm not the wolfman i'm crazy enough to do something like that. Look at me here. I sit porno theater in piccadilly circus talking to a corpse. I'm actually to see that's actually next week's top. Five top five porno scenes. Is it great. So i think scenes in a porno theater will be a very fruitful list. So far you guys of nailed two of my honorable. Mentions i had seven that i really wrestled with four of them. That easily could have been in this number five slot. But i'm going to stick with the horror genre. And as i look through my list i realized. The nineteen eighty-one was a bad year and a lot of ways for genre movies. There were a lot of really badge on rebels but there are a lot of really good genre films as well. I think this one was one of the most influential horror films ever it. Sam raimi's the evil debt That's my number five pick. Of course five students go off to the hills of tennessee to spend their spring break in an isolated cabin and they find the book of the dead and an audiotape. With chance that bring these demons to life and it sam raimi's debut. This has come up a lot on the show over the past seven years. That no one's gonna ever confuse me for a real horror buff. But that isn't because i have any problems with the genre. I just was always a huge scaredy cat. When i was a kid. Movies like this really terrified. And even when i finally saw this film for the first time i think i was a sophomore in high school and it scared me. I'm pretty sure. I had to stop the vhs tape when those demons first appeared just because it gave me goosebumps. But when i see it now i still get those chills a little bit. But i also see the great humor. Yeah it's a very funny movie. But as i said also very gory also very scary at times and of course i think what makes it. So influential is raimi's inventiveness with the camera. How creative it is working clearly on a very limited budget but to be able to combine that to make you laugh and give you chills at the same time is something few filmmakers can pull off so for me the evil dead's my number five. Yeah there's something about that. Comic horror mixture that was going on in eighty one. And i think every film that's followed since then and there have been plenty of osa debt to this movie so really ultimately. I think that's why it ended up in my top five was i was giving it a nod for the fact that it was so influential. Yeah so michael. You're number four film of nineteen eighty-one remember. Four is brian depalma's blowout. Is that on your honorable. Mention like him a lot. It's it's it's I prefer blow up blow up. I'm sorry i prefer the antonioni michael I prefer up picks up. But that's that wasn't this year. I think would blow out diploma finally got a little further away from the hitchcock's sources and tropes that he loves so much and he just had the story in the in the actors to do it I it's it's probably travolta's best screen performance. Maybe it's gorgeous. Sleek you know in many ways very familiar in terms of the story. But i it just as as film experience it really really is magic and And and genuinely sad film to. Yeah yeah. it's a good film geek film of course because it deals with technical aspects of putting a film together and i'm sure you're right about john travolta's performance as long as you overlook. A little gem called. michael. I don't know how you could do that. Yeah phillips but or battlefield earth or battlefield earth to stick with the master theme. Here josh number for my number four. I think has a reputation as being a camp fast. It's x caliber. Land to appreciate mean. When i was seven i did well. I have news seventies to excalibur my parents. Just let me watch whatever i wanted. The slackers bruin up when it showed up on cable. I just could watch it. So you never grew out of a raiders but you grew out of x. calendar. I don't know that i did probably not. I just had to watch even a part of it. Then here's the problem with it. If you look at it and again this is the ernest dramatization of their theory and legends. So if you look at it for the lead performances. You're going to have problems. You've got claes pretty boy. Lancelot who's the epitome of an eighties aerobic instructor. It's really bad. Stop but in the background. Here's what you'll find or who you'll find rather you've got gabriel byrne who's just ruthless arthur's father you've got liam niessen who's raging up a storm well before taken as one of arthur's knights and even helen mirren whose conniving as merlin's protege morganna coils of the dragon all things are possible things meet on those.
