"Chap of Falcons owner Arthur Blank some pretty personal stuff in there about the new head coach Arthur Smith, probably more specifically in terms of what I generate some cliques or some some real reaction. The Matt Ryan stuff, you know, listen, It's funny cause first, but he deferred to his GM, which which is the sensible thing to do. But we all know that if they ever decide if and when they decide to either cut, Matt not now, but in two years if they have to do that for money, whatever, or trade him this year or next year. There's no way that's going down without Arthur Blank saying, Okay, it's it's time. Here's my final stamp of approval. You let the football people deal with the machinations of any trade. But in terms of Getting that green that green light blanks gonna be the one to provide it or not. And and I don't think that I I don't think that they need to be there. Yet with Matt. There's other quarterbacks and, you know, may if that, I think it's time to move on. I just tell you got time to move on. I think you could still win with Matt Ryan. I do. Yeah, definitely. You can. He still got the talent is young ish. Relatives of some of these other quarterbacks are much older than him. So I think I think they'll It's an interesting debate that they're gonna have with each other. I'm sure. All right, You ready to jump in the old time machine? Go back to some of the early highlights when we were kids inside the NFL, and it just never seen this guy dance around like anybody was having is much fun or more fun. In our next guest who's on both the seventies and eighties old decade teams in terms of what he did is 100. He played receiver, too, but it's a punt returner three times led the NFL in touchdowns once on Kickoffs as well. And that the man had style. Billy White shoes. Johnson in the house. White shoes. What's happening, man? Hey, don't Billy man I'm doing Well. Thank you guys. The last is worth living. That's right. Hell, yeah, absolutely built. People of people still call you white shoes like every day like basis is you're walking down the street. Everybody shoot, too. By the way, Billy Way. I gotta take Billy bodyweight. There was a guy that I went to college with, and he's one of my best friends was in my wedding, right? And he was the kind of guy if a fox hole guy, right, but never had never had success with the girls like we always do our best from But we always make fun of him. And he'd always where the building he would always he was. The guy would go to the bar he like. We're like a three piece suit. And he still would go home with other but but he had. He would used to wear these thieves, white shoes and to this, like, filthy bar, and we call them Mattie White shoes because of you. Well, please take that from me because I wouldn't have success in the white suit. Yeah, one exact. I'm sure you did. I'm sure you did that. Yeah. No, I have a big nerd. Believe me. Nothing wrong with that. Always that claim the same thing, Billy. Um, you know, you know, this is the she was the one thing but the celebrations were another. I mean, I think I'm like I started appreciating not appreciating like acknowledging paying attention to celebrations because of you. What made you want to be that kind of hurt layer and the moment I think a lot of guys obviously were influenced by you. Well, you know, take it started back to me in college, but you really do it to be different. No, but have fun in the same time. My trying to poke fun of somebody not trying to get in the face and say Here you are. It was just a matter of a Thank you. The guys will help me get to the end zone, So we all could celebrate, so they got just as much out of it as I did whenever I would get to the end zone and dance. I didn't know this and I'm just looking at it now. Widener College, Pennsylvania, Right? Was Weidner P a right. I mean, it's kind of improbable that you get to the league and have the success that you did. But, you know, I'm interested that get your, you know, opinion. Remember, there was a moment in the history of the NFL, where they just like they went straight. No fun league. They cracked down on everything. No group celebrations? No, nothing. You could do anything. You mean that was almost a slap in the face to you. Did you take it that way? Not to you personally, but like took away a lot of the I think like the spontaneous joy of the game, and that's why you watch it right. Exactly. That's a school, not a lot, but they were hurting and game and regards to that. But you know what Fear does to people when they get panic when they panic, So that's what happens. Always going to go. Everybody is going to do it. Now. Look how long it's taken. And now completely reverse where they want to do something to help support the crowd. You know if the crowd jacked up, get that 12th man. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, We're told that the great Billy White shoes Johnson iconic. I mean the celebrations just phenomenal. At a great player. I mean, on the old on the 75th anniversary teams of specialists So you've carved out not just the celebrations quite the football legacy, but you had if I'm not mistaken, you had to wait. 15 rounds Tiki Tiki out of Wait until around two to get drafted. You got drafted in around 15. What was that? Like for who called you? There's the secretary. I don't know. I thought it was a guy here to the maintenance before. All right. Cool building. We'll give it a couple of days with come on Cold cold Johnson. Hey, You know what, And that's the truth is when I was drafted the equipment man said all he come in here and I had five in the health condition. I wore extra special help me for two years. After even making the All Pro team and M V p of the Pro Bowl was stuff. My third year I was going into 11 suspension helmets and, uh, my head. Killing me. I told you I go to the the equipment, a guy, he says. Do you want? I need to help me. I'm tired. These headaches and stuff. You know who gave you this helmet? I said you did. Oh, that's right. I thought you were gonna be out on the first thing smoking. Now go on way. Laughed about that for years because he was serious about it. You said Yeah. I thought you were a nice kid. But you weren't gonna last law. I mean, Billy gave you the cup of coffee helmet, man. You're lucky. You're lucky Billy. In all seriousness in the era of head trauma. I know we could laugh now. Just think. You're good, but I mean, that could have been a recipe for disaster. Is that your name again? You sound good, Ugo. Look, Billy, you're 60 69 years old 69 years young. It sounds like I mean, you think, um, but you're here because of the grid irons Great Gridiron Greats Assistant fund We always talk about at this time of the season, but obviously support so many great causes And and really somebody great people who may not be doing as well. I mean, You played in a narrow with Bt was joking about it, but his real head trauma wasn't an issue. You get knocked out. Get up, Get back in your hurt and you're going. Um, you know, tell us about how important this is to you because you live that era but also to the league to protect those guys and support those guys who were the foundation of what we celebrate now every every week and then, obviously on Super Bowl Sunday as well. You know, it's it's good that you get an organization like Good on you. Race Assistance Fund and you get sponsors like Southern Recipe who work line. We'll also bring awareness and donate to the fund because it's such a needed cause with former athletes. Whatever reason. Sometimes they have their struggling financially. They're struggling with medical bills, and it's just made it especially these guys were the godfathers. The grandfathers of the league playing and stuff and it really helps these guys to get them established back on their feet. Keep moving. There are people out there who still care about that. That helps a lot. So that's Billy White shoes. Johnson. We don't have a lot of time left. Give us a nice 32nd ish depiction because we know what what? What The pro athlete is like today, you know, immersed in social media. They take. They spend millions on their body..

"And Arthur Blank has shown that he is that's number one. How's your owner? So if that is the number one factor, you can go ahead and check the box and we've got a lot of boxes to check lights. You check an owner and then you go. Do they have a quarterback? Now I know Matt Ryan today and in its today, but he struggled and threw a pass. But he should have thrown. It certainly factored into the loss. But he is still under contract and still considered a guy that you can win a Super Bowl with. Check. Now, that may not resonate with some people right now, because of the way that this season is gone, But the fact is, Do you have a quarterback? You do? What else do you have? Because in this way, it's a quarterback league. I say it all the time. If you don't have that you're not going anywhere. So you start to look at these boxes and you're checking the boxes for the Falcons, and I believe both jobs are very, very attractive. Um, you're not in Cap Hill. You do and have taken care of the players that he needed to take care of, and you paid them accordingly. But good teams do that. And I think Arthur Blank is behind that as well, which also says to a general manager. If I go there, and I do acquire talent, we will be able to retain it, which is a big part of this. Both jobs were very attractive. I don't know. You know why fans or people say what? Whatever about the falcon simply because you know, we lost the Super Bowl in the fashion. We did. That has nothing to do with How many head coaches would love to be here? And how many general managers or assistant general manager or even guys? It may not be general managers right now that on that track would love to have the opportunity to continue to build this franchise moving forward. And get us back to a Super Bowl. Carl Duke's Your perspective much needed on a night where we see it A transformation of this Falcons franchise. I know you and Michael have plenty on this tomorrow at two from two until seven. Bill Barnwell on NFL Undefeated Teams + Monday Preview

"Bill Barnwell. It is late Sunday night almost midnight, which means it's time for you to make me smarter about the NFL. I'm going to try my best Baba Bill. Barnwell is a senior writer for ESPN host of the Bill Barnwell show and he's procrastinating his deadline to talk to me. So we just watched the saints and the packers on Sunday night football and the saints lost without. Their Star Receiver Michael Thomas. But that did not stop us from getting a whole bunch of touchdowns drew brees and Aaron Rodgers. Each threw for three a piece. But in the end, the packers won the saints lost and they've now lost New Orleans says back to back games for the first time since two thousand, seventeen bill I know you are writing a new piece about drew brees coming off of the two year deal that drew brees signed in the offseason and what we've now seen from him through these first three weeks what did you see in Sunday night's games he regressing improving? What do we have with bruise right now? Okay. So public drew brees definitely improving this is a better performance from him. Me brees was downright bad on Monday night in week two against the raiders before we got to garbage time and breeze didn't do deep very frequently until this game was out of hand but I think the concerns i. have read or have heard about arm strength or how deep is passes typically go they don't really get how reason this offense actually worked. Breezes sort of like. A singles hitter in baseball like Tony Gwynn lagging time where a post player with no range in basketball he's not going to suddenly start throwing deeply. He's Patrick Mahomes at forty one years old breeze has succeeded. Over the last three years while throwing the shortest paths in the League because he's posted the three best single season completion. In NFL history. Now. The good news for the Saints Good News For Saints Fans is that brees was much more accurate on Sunday night it was twenty, nine, thirty, six for two, hundred, eighty, eight yards a lot of that West Alvin Kamara who did a lot of the work but still going to end up thirty six is still better than where brees was. The bad news was just about everything else. The Saints Lost Starters Jared Cook and Andres P to injuries while devante. Adams List Aaron Rodgers threw for two hundred, eighty, three yards and those three touchdowns you mentioned. The saints focused on adding veterans with nicknames Emmanuel Sanders and balcony. Jenkins this off season. But. Sanders hasn't been able to stand out with ankle Thomas Injured and Jenkins has been picked apart in pass coverage including Mercedes Lewis touchdown on Sunday night the attorney for more accurate breeze that was a bright spot. But if the saints continue to struggle with injuries and get disappointing play from their stars, the Orleans is going to need this version of free stick around to have a chance to compete in the NFC. So the packers emerged three no, and that's where a lot of focus the rest of our conversation here on the teams that are now undefeated through three weeks of the NFL season. So bill, let's push deeper into the NFC here because the Chicago Bears Be Chicago bears are somehow three you know and they do it by beating the Falcons thirty to twenty six Chicago was trailing by sixteen head coach. Matt Nagy Decides to pull quarterback Mitch Trubisky in favor of the veteran nick foles mister big bleep nick himself who goes on to throw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. So I have a two part question for you now. Why are the Falcons physically incapable of holding onto a fourth quarter lead and? Secondly, where does this leave the whole quarterback situation in Chicago? Let me answer the second part of that question I. The bears are going to flail by the seat of their pants for the rest of the season I would assume that nick foles is going to start until he struggles and the bears trailing by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter a couple weeks from now, I would point Mitch Trubisky will come in and lead them to victory and the cycle will start the new. Unfortunately I don't have one simple takeaway for our poor friends and Atlantic. Is Different From what we saw in week to as. Much. As the defense was disappointing in this game, the offense really deserves a fair chunk of the blame for what happened scored a touchdown on the opening drive third quarter, and then basically tried to sit on their lead, Matt Ryan and company REPA- total three first downs on their next six is before the bears took the lead back and the only scored one field goal over that time after bisky intercession back running back Brian L. dropped an easy third down conversion which would have put the Falcons and field goal range. Then on the next drive kicker, young coup miss a forty eight yard field goal attempt. I know. I mean let's be fair. The Falcons defense was very bad. I'm not sure the Falcons are gonNA make any drastic changes on Monday morning, but Arthur blank can feel great about seeing this happen. On his seventy eighth birthday and. I believe I'm not mistaken not the only person celebrating birthday on Sunday. Having Birthday Pamela. Day Pablo. Yeah this is a hard way to discover that you share a birthday with the owner of the Atlanta Falcons Bill, which feels like you just cast a pox upon my house.

Falcons owner weighs in on onside kick blunder

"Speaking of blowing an assignment falcons on our arthur blank serious NFL radio was quoted as saying with the onside kick that the cowboys got. He said quote it's clear meaning his players didn't know what to do. Didn't know the rules. Yeah is not good. I do believe Dan Quinn. Said quite the opposite but that's the owner making that. Well, you know they know the rules they know they can jump on the ball. The question is if they jump on the ball, they better make sure that they secure the ball. That's the thing I. I could see number forty, one I can't you know I'm looking at the replay right now he's standing right there. He could jump on the ball and it looks like he's waiting for it to go ten yards wondering whether or not. It's actually going to go ten yards but you would think as the cowboy player is getting closer and closer to the ball. The ball is not hopping. Fall on it I don't know that would if I was a falcons fan, I would have thrown something through the but I think the Falcon player is afraid of touching the ball before ten yards and not securing it at the ball doesn't go ten yards and they don't have to worry about it has to go ten yards that to me. That's what it looks like. North blankets saved my team didn't have what the do. They're. Yeah. Well, obviously, they didn't know what to do because they didn't do it but I, think the day thought that the ball was not going to go ten yards. That's what I think.

"If you thought they couldn't blow a Super Bowl lead if you thought they could now be more creative. Well, you got to do is look at the 42 39 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. I think they're trying to lose on purpose. What the hell is this? An experiment. Dan Quinn has been lucky enough to still have his job. He gots to go. Arthur Blank is a patient man. Who else is on the hot seat? I mean, The team is not prepared. What is off the blank Expect? Set these phone lines before I get ready to roll out. Let's talk to Jerry. He's calling up from Talladega, Alabama jury You know, CBS sports radio. All right. Thank you. Are you Are you being Manhattan before I say? I don't know, man. That was old enough tales about William Man Group. Really wise is ground. You know what we did back then with these ladies? Dinner, maybe from made stuff. A motor home. There are stompin draft. It might be in your help me out, man. Well, Jerry, The only help I can tell you is to switch to another team. Or at least hoped for. Ah, Dan Quentin ago, Jerry. I mean, That's um, that's unfortunate. No brother, but it all paying them a coaching. They was not impaired. They didn't know what to do. When it came down to do what they may be. They do make Fabien always said You got him. Never. What do defective has been the position? Bad day what they needed to win the game. And he has no idea what to bet. No one was living all 10 yards on jam pony. They didn't know what to do. Well, jury, I'll tell you this and thank you so much for calling up from Talladega. The Falcons Don't ever know what to do. Their coaches. He's clueless. I don't know how many games I had the watch. I don't know how many games I went to last year. They play eight home games. I was probably there for Six out of eight. Maybe I was there for eight out of eight. I don't remember. To be honest, I just know For as many games as I watched at home on TV for his many games, and I went to and saw in person at Mercedes Benz. Falcons. It didn't seem like they were prepared to open up the games, and then they will always playing from behind. And that's why Matt Ryan puts up these crazy passing numbers because they're always playing from behind. Jose's calling from Columbia, South Carolina. Jose you want CBS Sports Radio, the jail sport we show. What do you think? Yes, sir. For some older women. Anyway, I went home in a long time. And, uh, And all people like to blame anyone but my men, and I think if you're 40 or 50 points And some games. I mean, I mean, many 56 points, so there is no point to win a little, you know, know what is Your problem ain't made a lot of people claim it was. The problem with the thousands is a coach Dan Quinn, and nobody looks too nice for me. Possibly That was to blame. Then quit would've been going. He lost 25 point lead going into the Super Bowl. You have a minute. Remember that morning? Okay, but I'm not all right. Have a good woman. Thank you for calling up from Colombia, he said art. The blank is ah! He's too patient. As the owner of the Falcons can't disagree with him. Anthony's calling up from Orlando Anthony you on CBS Sports Radio. What do your thoughts I think it will live to use the platform and I appreciate it, man. I'm a cab was. Can we play them every time like that? You know, I noticed the pattern. After the Super Bowl. You want to get the Superbowl assistance and they have not done nothing with the teams. They went to that pattern. These owners need to get onto these paddles and stop lefties lift some of these other cultures. Get in there. But like I said yesterday, man, I appreciate the land of talk, but I want to thank you. Once again. My heart goes out when I go back to Atlanta. I want to thank you one more time. I like to play chess down here, but I want to thank you one more time. Oh, I could so they're low guys. Thank you so much. Anthony for call enough from Orlando. Yeah, You're not the only person or team thanking the Falcons, I would venture to say. The New England Patriots are forever thrilled with the Atlanta Falcons. Let's talk to Jamail calling up from Alabama J U on CBS Sports Radio. What are you saying? Listen him. First of all, I won't talk about it on that kick. Then thousands looked at the Dogon football make like they pick it up like they were going to Don't cope. Jane Graham made 17 never show his face in a mantle because he looked right at that ball as it passed. Don't make no doubt on since the lemon taste about Dan Queen. Dan Quint spoke. Been going after 2018 Dan Quinn been making the net plays you get on these place. Thousands make these excuses, Thomason. We not prepared and whoever alone.

"Back in the Peter King podcast. So happy to be joined by Ryan Tannehill the Tennessee Titans quarterback, and you know Ryan I tell people this. And when I have written this or talked about this everybody says really. There's a couple of to me. Amazing things about the story of Ryan Tannehill in two thousand nineteen one. Yet, a quarterback rating of over one hundred seventeen. That's the highest quarterback rating in the NFL. In six years since Nick, foles in two, thousand, thirteen and. You also had the highest yards for attempt at nine point, six yards per attempt. of any QUARTERBACK IN FOOTBALL And both of those things, obviously, you would never done before in your in your NFL. But what I think is most interesting about you. Is is you look at what is the compensation that that Tennessee Titans paid to get number one? A fourth round draft pick, which was the hundred and thirty fifth pick in the draft this year, and they also got Miami to pay seventy five percent of your salary last year. So they got you for one percent of the salary cap and. The salary cap last year and the hundred and thirty fifth pick in the draft, and you were the most efficient quarterback in the NFL. With the best. Kind of deep armed percentage I guess I would call it when I think of yards for attempt I. Always think of you know how well you're throwing the ball deep but anyway so that's my very long winded way of saying man heck of a job last year. They, use a lot of fun. You know I think Like you said, different circumstances coming into Tennessee last year coming in last spring. But had a lot of fun last year in excited to see what can do this year. Arthur, Brown your offensive coordinator told me that. When you came in and he met you and talk to you about things obviously, you came to Tennessee a year and whatever three months ago. Clearly as a backup to Marcus Mariota. And you told him if not mistaken at one point. A you know I'm going to be the best backup I can be, and I'm going to try to help Marcus the best I can which had to be kind of a difficult thing for you to be able to say knowing that you felt that you're starting quarterback. Yeah no doubt. It was a big adjustment for me. You know going back. Coming here and just. Getting a new role. Stepping into a backup role when I had been a Maho career. Simply the myself in and knew that, I could play but was stepping into a new role. So had to adjust to that and can figure a long fly. I'd had great backups down among Matt Moore was with me for a long time down in Miami and Saw Him do a great job for me as far as helping me throughout the whole process and. You know once I kinda. Settled into the role little bit than in competed in training camp. Do the Best I could. All right now that. Now that the season I'm going to do the best job I can about preparing the defense on a daily basis getting myself ready to play in supporting Marcus along the way. So that was kind of my thought processes know you can't control the circumstances you're all the time you can control how you handle it in your approach and and. What you get out of each and every day, and it's kind of my thought process going into each and every day is be the best I could and and go from there you ended up really liking Mario didn't you? Mark is a great guy. You know I had a lot of fun with Marcus really enjoyed being in the room with him obviously Could. Have Been. It was a really tough situation, but it could have been a very awkward situation within the room you know with the change going going down midseason. So really thankful for the way the markets handle that he's just a class act through through a competitor integrate football player will be rooting them along with the rest of his career. So. If I if I can ask you an overarching question that you probably answered sixty four times but. I'm just really curious you basically. You were sixty three percent passer in your career. At Miami, your first year at Tennessee, you're seventy percent passer, your career rating in Miami was eighty seven. And in two thousand, nineteen was one, seventeen, point five. So. Just give me an idea when you look at it when you look at your career and what was so good for you. Last year that allowed you to play at that level. Me Two or three thoughts of why that happened. Really. Came to go as a team I. Think Arthur, did a great job of of putting our team in a position succeed. And the guys bought in we believed in believed in each other and I think at the end of the day that played a big part in it is when you go out with the trust, the guys around you the belief it that someone's GonNa, make a play we may not have the perfect play called May Have a really tough look on her hands, but we believe in each other and believe that someone's going to make a place almost going to step up in and find a way to get open on. If you are covering, put the ball in a good spot that belief that they're going to make a play on it, which guys did for me, you know multiple times throughout the year obviously was it was a huge part of our success. You had you had a bunch of. Rain Are Arthur Smith is interesting guy himself obviously. But you had a lot of guys who had been cut elsewhere or who had been undrafted free agents or whatever and or lower picks or whatever, and I'm thinking about guys like Khalif Raymond. Mid Round pick like Johnny Smith and I mean he had a bunch of those guys but. What do you think it is about the way Arthur Smith..

"Welcome to the Peter King podcast. So happy to be joining one week before the start of the NFL season. There's an awful lot to talk about this week on the podcast I've got Ryan Tannehill the rejuvenated quarterback of the upstart Tennessee Titans of spoke to him late last week. he's very much in we gotta go prove it again mode after the titans great end to the two thousand nineteen season, and we'll also talk to arthur blank the owner of the Atlanta Falcons. He's got a new book out good company. A business tip book. And we'll also ask them just a little bit about what he thinks about what's going on in the NFL and whether the season will be played to fruition. Now. You know what I am thinking about these days. We sit here a little more than a week before the start of the regular season. I've gotTa Make My. In my column in football morning in America next Monday. and. Every morning I wake up because I surly I I'm thoroughly confused about who to pick to win the super bowl years. I have a great idea and the team I really want to pick to win. The Super Bowl is the Kansas City chiefs because even though they were down ten points with eight minutes to go against San Francisco. Just six or seven months ago I. Think we're looking at it now and suddenly the Andy Reid told me in training camp really struck me. He said, you know remember we're behind in every game in the playoffs and not just behind but significantly behind. You know the Texans were up twenty four in the second quarter the Tennessee titans were up by touchdown. Also in the second quarter. With eight minutes to go against the forty niners in the super bowl of the chiefs were down ten before Patrick mahomes polled. Few bits of magic. Out of. Out of out of some more who knows where but you know the the the point I wanted to make is that you take that you know that they had to battle to win every one of those playoff games now obviously they they blew Houston out because Houston's defense just wasn't up to it but Tennessee game was tough from the San Francisco game was very tough and so I just sort of look at this. And I add to the fact. That when you think about it and this is something that I think we probably don't think about enough. You go to in the last fourteen NFL seasons. There is not been a repeat winner. In fact, it's been since the two thousand, four and two, thousand, five, New England patriots that any team has repeated. And I oftentimes will think of that. It's one of the reasons why very rarely do I pick a team to repeat. And you know I hate to be subject to the win of the fact that the last team I saw in training camp. this year was the Kansas City chiefs and there wasn't a lot not to like. They've got twenty of twenty one coaches back. They've got twenty of twenty two starters back. They've got a great fun effervescent explosive new running back in Clyde Edwards Hilar- I. Don't know how many people in the last two or three weeks I've said. Don't let Clyde Edwards Hilar-, get past the first half of the first round of your fantasy draft. And so. I just think that they're a really good team obviously. And they have enough answers on defense but again. Honestly what I'm trying to do is talk myself out of picking them and we'll see what happens. We'll see in the next five days of what thoughts go through my mind as I stare up at the ceiling at six o five am eastern time as I. Look up and say, okay, what about the saints or what about the niners? What about an upstart team? What about the bucks? By the way? I really like Tampa Bay. buccaneers. So, let's get to our guest now enough of me. Here for me a lot. Don't you? But me, let's get to Ryan Tannehill a talk to him at the end of a practice session in meeting late last week over videoconference from Nashville Halo I think Ryan Tannehill is an incredible incredible story I mean think of this I just want you to think of this. Ryan Tannehill. In Trade, from Miami to Tennessee cost the Tennessee titans one percent of their salary cap last year. And the one hundred and thirty fifth pick in the two thousand, twenty draft. An all the titans got for that. Was the top rated quarterback in football. And the quarterback who had highest yards per attempt in the NFL last year both. Very much different from the career marks of Ryan Tannehill but I ask Tannahill about that several other things. Here we go with Ryan Tannehill.

"Get into a little fantasy football with him as we take a right up until high noon CBSSports radios eye on football hosted by rich Ackerman that does come your way then couple of interesting storylines David around the league number one the decision that a let up by Arthur blank to bring both Quinn and to me trough back as head coach and as a general manager deal like that decision you know I I actually do and I I don't think I was surprised by the Atlanta Falcons keeping both of them number one you know Arthur blank make sure you did is due diligence to check to see if there were anybody out there that he could see that could come in that could do a better job than Dan Quinn and do a better job with the organization he's a strategic business ma'am so we didn't go into this all with his eyes closed so I think that's number one number two I think they've shown enough post by even with injuries that they've done enough significant wins especially when we talk about the win at our San Francisco and New Orleans to keep their job and when you really look at it obviously the last two seasons were disappointing twenty three twenty four since at twenty three collapse in the Superbowl Super Bowl fifty one and when you think about that and you think about the injuries they've been significant but at the same time when you look at the Atlanta roster they're not far off they have a quarterback they have a running back they have the wide receivers they just drafted to upgrade their offense of line really were the the the weak link it's been as the injuries on the defensive side of the ball and lack of depth so with that being said I do think that they're closer than people think and I think that's why Dan Quinn in Thomas Mitchell's got one more year yeah I you know I think they get one more year and I I think it's a case of they're looking at the Ryan windows being open and yeah I mean these bring about change at this stage going to be good for keeping the window open or is it gonna be a hindrance I think probably Arthur blank looked at the way that this team rallied the fact that the N. Julio Jones a Ricardo Allen and other veteran players on my team coming out speaking up for dank yeah and it said it's probably best for us to stay the course rather than bring about change down there and let the reports that in Jacksonville them arose gonna be out after today's game for the Jaguars not surprising in many ways she performed it's been a disaster I mean the stuff with powerful in that you've read about with the Players Association right now you know obviously he's been fired now for well over a week I now you look at Marone here I ale it it it should surprise anybody the falls moved in work he got hurt then he came back in and he was bad it means to kind of stymie the course a little bit there they're no where near what they once were a couple years ago when they went to the AFC championship game that team needs a lot here moving forward they they definitely do and obviously don't world was in a tough position considering the fact he's a head coach but as the former head coach is the president who still acting like a head coach of the football team addressing players publicly addressing them in you know inside the facility in after games that's something that's very difficult for head coach to deal with because now the sun there's two people in power and what is a player do if something goes wrong if you go to that culture to to go to the president and that's something that was a problem in Jacksonville that being said Doug Marrone will no longer be the Jacksonville head coach you see the disappointed that football team going the opposite direction well there are two things with the NFLPA whether it's outspokenness of players weather is not that accountability and one another or to offense blaming the defense of the defense blaming the offense we ship is reflected throughout and it hasn't been there are what about the story they came down on Friday the fact that Antonio brown was down at the New York now is one of six receivers we just saw video Michael Thomas walking into the building for the saints this afternoon I think it's a to take on the caravan is a man right now he Michael Thomas is stopped in this set the new receptions mark a week ago being Marvin Harrison in in their victory on the road in Tennessee against the Titans they go back on the road this week against Carolina a but how bout the same spring Antonio brown in for a workout six receivers were brought in brown be in one of on that investigation personal conduct also we know these sexual assault and allegations are still out there those are two what civil lawsuits are thinking what about Antonio brown's way you know he's suing teams to try to claw back more than thirty million dollars in it what he believed was guaranteed money that should be coming this way but if he is tried to kind of paint the story of trying to get back in the National Football League the scenes what some clarity here the one thing they want some clarity in terms of his eligibility for the post season what do you think you'd get that clarity from the NFL before you brought him in for a workout well I mean one thing when you make that call beforehand well one thing you know that you're gonna somebody eventually was going to be a team that was going to work come out and one of the big things that teams were worried about is that working out and signing on that you would have to guarantee and pay him those weeklies even if he wasn't put on the commissioner's exempt list he would still be receiving checks now you're playing with house money because after this week there's no checks as a playoff jets coming from the NFL and coming from wind so that's why strategically it wouldn't cost the same to any money if they work but having said that you know the minute that you were to sign Antonio brown he's going on the commissioner's exempt list he's not going to play this season so with that being said you don't know if it was a favor do is agent a favor de da Rosenhaus because we know there's always those back door channels I'm trying to appease people even though there isn't there could be some behind it but in no way shape or form that I see the same signing up why ever I mean you know this season this season that that's fair I mean I would I would have been you know two weeks ago I was asked a question I said I'll be start of Antonio brown plays in the National Football League this year I grew the F. for New Orleans though if you look at the player just look at me as a player and I get these a buckle and I understand the the allegations that are against the more alarming just look at me as a football player what is he provided provide some something they don't have yeah which is a deep threat yeah bottom they they don't throw the ball is the as much as they once did that people can look at breeze be in his early forties and say it's a little bit of aids on the quarterback maybe does have the same arm and he does have the same bar that he had that had five six seven years ago but what Antonio brown a Thomas is a man go over the middle may call the cuff catches is more than just a possession receiver he's better than that however he's not a burner he's not what Antonio brown even at thirty one years of age represents no I mean Antonio brown take the top off of that offense and it would be good now we have a a situation where you're creating more one on one for Michael Thomas considering the fact that he's pretty much getting bracketed every single play and he's still making reception for that team so he would add a different dimension to the football team not to mention Antonio brown that can see nothing to drew Brees he can say nothing to Sean Payton unlike the way that he acted in responded and and acted in Pittsburgh in the way that he acted in responded in Oakland and the way that he handled everything with their car he would be able to get away with that with that locker room in the leadership that they have a normal you know away from brown here for second B. as there's been many reports stay in in the you know go over the NFC's there's been some reports down there in the NFC east around the Washington Redskins number one report about tomorrow with Louis Marvin Lewis in there was a report this morning that you're a Ron Rivera is one runner even though nobody knows if he's interviewed for the job it offers did in the job but that might be at the top of the list for the Washington Redskins to bring him in as their next head coach listed in the red skins all due respect to Marvin Lewis who wants to get back in the National Football League in and he's he had a long run in Cincinnati way too long way too long but the idea that the red skins that's going to be the guy you're going to go to is Marvin Lewis or add that that's the apple of your audit of gold is you're gonna border was it just brought it is assisted grown in from said that it didn't work and go back to the bank was just joking around with the Marvin Lewis the announcement that he may be the hiring and then they fire Bruxelles was empress Elam's idea that what finally got Bruce Allen fired from the Washington Redskins nominating insane Marvin Lewis should take over the position that's absolutely absurd and I think one of the things that will make coaches more interested now in that Washington job is the fact that Bruce Allen will no longer be there well I mean that's a positive I mean and and obviously that is that's a good thing for the red skins that's that's a positive because I always thought that regardless of who they brought in it Bruce Allen was still ahead of football operations and running that franchise that was gonna be a problem for any kind of sustained success and I would look at that situation has been uninhabitable they never want to if I was gonna take a shot Dow follows a retread and I had a shopping you'll go out cash it once again as an invalid code to take the job revised one shot conceivably the bay ahead coach of the National Football League the red skins would not be the shot I take you know one of the jobs that when I used to talk to players on the Redskins they used to call the Bruce Allen masters one or he was the head wrap everything everything around him because he is gone right could be ordered with here's some.

NFL Week 5 Recap

"Let's do some weekly awards here first off on the land the Atlanta Falcons into now one in four they got hammered against Texans fifteen thirty two and here's another example here's Atlanta running running p Carroll scheme you know don't work it's not working you know you can't play a lot of cover three zone you can't read the shoulder of the quarterback you can't break on the ball if you're defensive line doesn't dominate. I mean if you can't play Amanda Man Game and you can't get into it what's the falcons can the Falcons I mean Dan Quinn is going to take the heat for this but the Falcons are not very good they're eight and thirteen over the last twenty one games there now nineteen and twenty six the Super Bowl I mean at some point Arthur blank's going to have to sit there and say I can blame the coach but we're not a very good team we're just not very good team we're going to have to revamp what we're doing here we're going to rethink about how we're picking players Hauer cure town Atlanta's not one of those teams that steals they make very few trades I mean I know they traded for Cyprian and they traded they rarely make trades the metro the general manager doesn't want to go outside his draft picks he wants to just destroy he really is Ted Thompson when Ted Thompson was agreed but he wants to get players one way I don't think you can do that anymore in the NFL you know they've got Julio Jones Good player Matt Ryan declining not the same player and offensive line stinks this big win I didn't think that they could go into Houston and win but they're bad rotating I mean Matt Ryan now is ten fifteen when he goes endorsed on the road yeah thirty to forty six for three thirty three touchdowns yeah this this doesn't make any sense to me right you fired you fired Dirk Qatar because you didn't think it was good and you bring them back like why did you fire them in the first place like it make any sense like what are you doing you know and you got rid of Sarkisyan which I think was right but to me that this is this is part of the problem in the NFL there's not enough people. helping the head coach right there's nobody really helping Dan Quinn he's he's calling the defense he's trying to be the general manager he's trying to get his general manager to try to find players it's a really tough job anyone that's your Fred Palermo award the best thing going into the week Jon Gruden you gotTa give it to John I mean love you bro I mean

"Then arthur blank right i knew said that his letters are relatively full of candor you liked them generally they were ranked i think somewhere around the top twenty of the rittenhouse rankings which will talk about in a minute and then another ceo came in nardelli in the two thousand and and you analyze his letter and i thought it was so interesting because i would not have picked up on any negativity you say the fact that he uses the words powerful culture and it's an honor and a privilege to write this letter and that he went out and met every home depot manager were actually examples of fog that would've taken that as positive and it made me realize how deeply you go because what you said was now why didn't he go meet with the actual employees why is he using vague words like powerful culture instead of describing what he's actually talking about yeah well he there he is he came from wonder what boards are thinking right do they really understand their culture he kept from the ge culture totally top down culture and we all see where this land so he brought that top down values into a company that was all bottom up when you wrote arthur blank sledders you you were with him on the store floors talking to the orange apron employees the people loved him he had he he garnered the kind of respect in section that jim senegal at costco had garnered during his tenures ceo so yeah it's when i soon as all through those kinds of words and that's where i think the education is for meeting your buck is because i would have just taken that on its face like oh he's being nice okay he met every home depot store manager that sounds like a diesel idea well i wouldn't have been able to sing those things had i not thoroughly analyzed and integrated of this my thing into my thinking all the great work that the great letters that arthur blank and his colleagues had authored over the years a great point so it was the comparison that really showed the difference s absolutely you wanna see him from there she went into how she actually quantifies those letters so that she can put them into rankings and you'll hear that in four weeks when we play the full episode annual read it in the book in the meantime so the biggest comment that i get from people when i tell them about this booker after they've read the book is wait a second can't these letters just be written by some pr person and really like how much can we actually tell about a ceo who probably didn't even write the letter himself which to me is legit criticism and a very proper question in today's day and age where there are teams of people who go over these things so i asked her and by the way notice how she mentions warren really casually in the section yeah that's warren buffett first name basis so let me ask you about this because this is generally the first question i get from anybody whenever i talk about this book they say wait a second these letters are not actually written by the ceo's they're written by pr people they're written by frankly consultants like you who come in and give them advice on how to phrase what they wanna say how do you handle that do you think that's true and if so how do you handle that in your analysis i've never said this before but that question furious but it's okay racing i'm that literally the second somebody puts that book down that's what they've said to me but hold on these ceo's don't actually write the letters well then my response is number one doesn't that tell you something important right away well only if i can hell if they wrote it or not and i'm not i assure you i'll i'll take anybody you bring them to me i have the right up letter high in fog a letter low and faulk and they say okay which one of these would you trust it's as squier as the nose on your face so what i hear you saying is it's low in fog it probably came from that person it probably wasn't my some flack in the in the pr department care snow it okay here's here's response number two not every ceo is less look the.

"But that amount of money is just amazing i find it amazing because you continue to pay for potential but you see the potential for matt ryan you've seen the falcons beyond the precipice of winning the super bowl only to fall short and lose to the new england patriots but yet even at age thirty three he'll be three three on may seventeen this is how important the quarterback position is when he make thirty million dollars a year and you haven't won a super bowl yet isn't that something it but this is this is where we are in sports you like man we have to solidify our quarterback spot not trying to to to make another one i try to cultivate a young quarterback and find out a younger version of matt ryan tv's out there in college the draft now matt ryan has all these weapons so for sure the atlanta falcons win the super bowl this time right it's not promised to everybody and you appreciate arthur blank trying to put his best foot forward and trying to pay for someone he believed that can finally get them over the hump but that may never happen again atlanta may never get to the super bowl again even with the weapons have authencity you know hey we know it's about offense in the quarterback position in the nfl but doesn't necessarily mean that they have the best balance of both ends are both sides of the field and so thirty three years of age and making thirty million dollars a year that's that's not tom brady that's matt ryan who is a terrific quarterback don't get me wrong but you paint 'em does extra money doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get to where you need to be you're paying him to win a super bowl championship but boy that's a ton the tampa kirk cousins now that money that was set by her cousins with twenty eight million they paid for him because the vikings didn't have a quarterback in place to get them to the super bowl kirk cousins very well could be they're the best in the nfc north and one of the best teams in the nfc so you're paying for that garoppolo but it's twenty seven point five million dollars while you're paying for potential there because you saw glimpses of what garoppolo could be san francisco late last year you saw him as a backer.

"arthur blank" Discussed on The Right Time with Bomani Jones

"Falcons owner as you reported arthur blank leader told davis that he missed his calling as a great public speaker now to the average fan that sounds like sort of a nice thing to say but there is a level of condescension there i found that was palpable i was wondering what you thought about that not in terms of how you reported it but in terms of what you read as number two rebels you heard for everybody else yeah i actually think that blank did not mean it in a condescending manner uh i don't think that the davis took it that way either from my understanding from are reporting but e e what what was important about that moment his arthur blank actually was deeply touched by that players owners session and i think comments that davis made this at look to the owners you've got to listen to us you cannot just pay lip service to our issues and that was a major concern in that room i mean one of the things that the owners heard from the players the player said you can't behind closed doors and inside the locker room say you're empathetic to our causes and then publicly say nothing or like jerry jones say if you take a knee you're not gonna play that sunday so that message in davis was really he was really outspoken very passionate and i believe that uh davis didn't take it from blanked that in a condescending manner i think it actually deeply touched black we talked to for the story and he was given high marks to to all the players said it was one of the most important meetings it ever been to his entire life and i think because of davis's passion nieto that message was delivered loud and clear to arthur blank i only bring it up because it shows a little bit of the nature of the relationship between owners and players is that something happens outside of playing football and these guys a borderline shocks to the point that they have to say something.
