And and i it it seems like he was poised to you know to have maybe his his greatest successes he was sixty one so throughout his sixties You know he he who knows what What he could have had i. It's one of one of the saddest. He marianne It's one of the saddest things that I in my memory in the last couple of decades yet really what it is shot by stepson A terrible situation but he really focused in those years on young horses and he had such a great for young horses and breeding and he was just developed. He was already a great horseman. I loved working order flying. Because you couldn't do nothing wrong and and You know there were He's good right now. I remember working get along. But it's amazing how these mayor laker and she comes up with a a smarty jones. Bob was i. I won a lot of races on bob sources and and some steaks and we have a lot of fun and the jocks. We used to go over there and hiding his barn and sit there and copy with him and tell stories and attack room. If we were hiding from our agents. Because we didn't get it. I remember he was the of guy was. He would make sure that you would stay focused and intense and fee. If you thought you was getting lax. He would grow monkey wrench into the gears. Forget how would use mike mccarthy in me against each not against each other but how would manipulate us right I guide ride a horse. And he didn't like the way it runs up on me like oh and he would do the same thing like mike took this course back. I told him at the source. Run out of there and put me on next time. I'd ride the ones our little quicker than michael take the ones that would come in from off of it and he would play his back and forth. What told you to take us back black. You know you should've taken him a little off the paste on that next time mccarthy on them i mean he keeps you on your toes. You better pay but he did it in a way. You came to the conclusion that he was keeping you on your toes and he was playing you guys the way he wanted to play and gets the way was that guy was but he but he never said anything. Not because they've shut it down that good because we haven't improved i numbers necessarily and we have new strains out there and things of that nature but i'm just wondering if they're away like the nba is figuring out how to do things virtually of these. Can't we like set up a baby. Lamb ham or something and people can pay and then we can still scholarships and it would be great. I just think we need to find a happy middle ground somewhere using digital technology.

That room is not air conditioned vehicles not air conditioned And it feels a bit like like like hearing that there's GonNa be no running water. No toilets or something along those lines. Yeah totally the kind of a self fulfilling prophecy as we've been alluding to before because the more the more we come to take air conditioning for granted the more we build our lives around it and make it harder and harder to live without it. Yeah and indeed build out into places where it it would not make sense to live without it. I mean for instance. You think like some of these really hot days. We have this summer And how they impacted say Save people living in Phoenix Arizona. Yeah and it certainly especially if you're dealing with older individuals. Yeah there are people that are having to live out on the streets. There'd be real concern. Health Concern The high temperatures. Oh yeah the the the light as can kill people? Yeah they do all the time and so air conditioning. One of the things arsenault says air conditioning did in in many ways measurably improve life like it cut down on deaths related to hot weather But on the other hand he's talking about how a lot of the cultural differences and traditions that are associated with communities that live in hot climates including the American south are a result of the hot climate. You they're not it's not just incidental. It's like you know like the the cookout tradition. You know it's a result of the fact that there's hot weather and with the introduction of air conditioning many of the distinct cultural features that define cultures in hot climates diminish over time and so he argues that climate control has to some extent homogenized the United States as a culture in reduced a sort of a reduced some regional variations that were derived from differences in temperatures throughout the year And if our so is correct in his thesis about the American South obviously this effect would not just be an American phenomenon is similar could be happening anywhere that air conditioning pervades hot climates changing cultural practices and ways of life. Along with it. Yeah it just it. It basically changes the equation for for modern living. Yeah no talked a little bit about the the commercial growth that results due to air conditioning technology especially in in hotter regions say at the United States in the postwar period. But another thing to think about is that AC ends up Proving essential in the computer age is a way to keep these machines from overheating. Oh Yeah I mean. We're filling our living spaces. Also with these machines are dumping a lot of heat constantly. I mean I wonder how much how much a computer heats up and non air conditioned room or a bunch of computers. Yeah I'm sure there's some stats on that left of to look at it and certainly how how and to what extent it's changed over the years. Yeah now there are other strange ways. The legacy of air conditioning could be even more powerful than it first seems. For example there are a bunch of There are little threads of social science research about heat and climate control and various social outcomes at the broad level that are correlated with heat and access to air conditioning For example I was reading September two thousand eighteen article by Jeff Asher in the New York Times that examines a bunch of existing data on the possible or supposed links between whether and crime No one looking at stuff like this. I do want to avoid something that That that actually Raymond arsenault talks about in his article. Which is a he calls it. Monaco's climatological determinism looking at the climate or the weather as like the one caused causal factor in broad social trends. Oh yeah you see this from time to time where it's like hot cultures are like this yelled old? Cultures are like this Sometimes there is you know in specific areas. There's I think there's more of a case to be made like I don't know when you start talking about spices and food. Some of that comes into you know availability of spices. Well Oh absolutely I. It's it's certainly got to be the case that there are influences of climate and temperature on culture. I think that's undeniable is just that you want to avoid what he calls the. Mano Causal Climatological Determinism..
The Revenge of the 47 Ronin - January 30, 1703

Ezekiel Elliott, agent touch down to finalize Cowboys deal
"Our reporter edward or who was in dallas following zeke situation closely. He said i've been told that agent. Rocky arsenault is traveling with running back ezekiel elliott from kabul to dallas. Remember zeke was working out in kabul bob now traveling back to his team's hometown source said an agreement between the team and the two-time n._f._l. Rushing champion is very close. Good news for cowboys cowboys fans as one is a pun us and it would be a good time to agree to a new deal multiple reports say again zeke left kabul to be back in dallas the hope being that if and when a deal gets done he would be in close proximity to the team and could rejoin them very quickly quickly michael. We'd said i this well. It's obviously <hes> on tuesday. You better be preparing with the people that you've got available to you for sunday and so we're working with the people that we have out here now and the ones that we have that we were going to be on the field and that's how we're preparing it will be great will be and would be great if a short period of time passes that zeke would be in that group but we'll see how wow today goes. We'll see how tamara goes. We'll see how the ensuing hours pan out again. Jerry jones commenting on this as he has throughout the process sometimes with better results than others but in any event when i said to you hey rocky. Our snow is with zeke elliot. He said you said what that is. Typically assigned things close. Yes yes exactly when the agents coming with the player that means. We're at the one yard line. We have some details to work out and again. We gotta remember that zeke elliott's already under contract so that's important he just joke right back in in terms of gain the physical done and sometimes it may take a day or two to work out the details with the agent get the approval in terms of some of the details worked out but in the meantime he could get the weekly game plan and there's speaking acclimated back <hes> very quickly so hopefully this gets resolved over the next day or so well jackie said this earlier but just to underscore underscore the point that sooner is better having said that you feel like as long as he's in camp. I mean not camp. I'm sorry with with the team and in practice by thursday day to be in the plan on thursday needs to be in by wednesday so so we gotta be close in order to go twenty four hours or so but it doesn't surly a matter how many players but it could be the most important place and we talked about this earlier you know just from past protections point he may be out there on third downs and in non non running situations because of his conditioning. Tony pollard has taken every rep in every meeting so i got to imagine that tony pollard even with zeke there this week will be a big part of the game well. It's so easy to think about zeke and to be effective. He's got to have the football on his hands but to your point pass protection is something he can do and has done and if that's what it is this week then so be it then you surviving advance so to

Boy mortensen followed up elliott is still training in kabo san lucas at a quote quote great facility during his contract holdout no real activity yet on negotiate money. I read something yesterday. I wasn't on the phone much but i thought he'd come back to dallas or something. That report was a false report well. I don't know but this word here saying he's still in cobb by the way the that was disrespectful jerry sense of humor. I mean if you're zeke. That probably does feel a little bit disrespectful. A fourth round rookie running back ezekiel elliott is arguably the best running back nut if not top three in the n._f._l. I mean yeah of course. He's gonna think it's disrespectful. How disrespect it is though is the question i- disrespectful respectful enough to not buy at all on any contract negotiations. That sounds very tense very terse. I mean think about if you're in the middle of a very public contract negotiation and and the owner of the company that you're gonna go she went out and said call and who. Indonesia's Widodo looks set for election victory
"Today. The ritual of democracy is played out nation spread across thousands of miles of ocean, Indonesia as so many islands. It's hard to count them. Maybe sixteen thousand maybe a lot more more than nine hundred are inhabited and across those islands. People are counting ballots in today's presidential election, exit polls project, president Joko Widodo winning another term he defeated the same challenger back in two thousand fourteen the election revealed the influence of conservative Islam, we found NPR's Julie McCarthy in Jakarta I-, Julie kind there. Indonesia has been seen as a place where moderate Islam flourished. What's changing? Well, that's right. Five thousand miles away from the Middle East in the birthplace of his lawn. You've had Indonesia that have been seen as proof that Islam and democracy could live side by side. But there were signs in this campaign that suggests that Indonesia is becoming more religiously conservative take the president himself president. We don't know this is a small example. But it's telling here's a guy who loves heavy metal music, and there he was at his finale rock concert rally taking pains to thank the country's clerics for their support. Okay. So so going for going for the heavy metal gotta like that. But also picking a cleric with hardline views for his running may, right? That's right. And there was a move that really jolted some of his supporters. We don't move to the right? In a bid to neutralize the allegation that came up against him that he's not Islam enough and the analysts agree. This was politically expedient move, and it alienated some supporters, but others look past it, and it was tell us we're in a country that operates in a world of grey is not black and white. But there are also some troubling signs that a climate of intolerance is growing people are falling afoul of the blasphemy law. There's really no move to repeal it the governor of Jakarta, a Christian was charged with blasphemy voted out of office. He was jailed now Andrea Arsenault with human rights. Watch is the author of a new book titled race Islam in power. And he says faith politics is growing at a fast clip here. And he's Indonesia is becoming dangerous here. He is the idea to Jane's Indonesia into an Islamic state has been rising, and this is going to be a danger. Not only for the street of Malacca all four southeast Asia. But they've been a problem for the whole world. Now, I would hasten to add Steve here that there are plenty of others who believe that Indonesia has been a moderate state will remain one. And the reelection of widow goes a long way in demonstrating that the turnout with route eighty percents, that's quite high even by Indonesian standards. Although I have to note Julie McCarthy we've seen this United States politicians make promises in campaigns are seen as cynical pandering. But then they get elected and people expect them to keep those promises. Well, that's right. And so his big balance will be how is he going to deal with this growing Islamic nation while he seeks a a pretty much of a secular agenda, which is to you know, focus on human rights. Moron. Focus less on human rights and more on human resources like the developing in the human capital of this country. It's very young place. Forty-two percent are under

So the said they would look at giving us a better card and for sure we've got five overnight state the finish up the card on Friday and feels and all the other races both fields. And that's what the betters like both feel. You know, there's no five force or six horse races, everything seven or twelve. So we're quite happy with Friday's card and was. Saturday's boss dollars talking with Lorne going through every race. And I was just blown away the fields the quality at it's like a Kentucky Derby day or Breeders Cup day or quality. That's just just great. It's really a little little intimidating. I printed it out night. Forty one prints out at forty one pages, and it really is a Breeders Cup, the derby type card, you know, the features obviously, they they had they had kind of written their own script. But the other seven very standard stakes on the on the Gulfstream calendar, then you fold in you know, the the maiden race in the allowance races. And so forth. It makes for it should make for a tremendous day and go back last year when we were discussing this. It generates similar kinds of of contest offerings around the industry. I mean, if everything, you know, everything works the way it it seems to be working. I mean, how did you even convince them to put up the Bank to put up the prize package? Well, you know, Frankie he really loves the game and easy gives everything back to horse racing. So yeah, this is very exciting time for our committee. Lauren Allen Ross Gallo and myself, we're really looking forward to this year. Last year was the start this year. It'll be a lot better. And we're hoping down the road. It'll is good as the Breeders Cup or better. It has you know, it has all the potential you look at the card for Saturday. And and of course, we do have to fold in the Friday card because it is a two day contest. And you know, it's a big money, and it's a big commitment, but the Friday card how many what percentage of the of the races have to be on on Friday versus Saturday on Friday. They have to bet five races mandatory.

And I know I'm very excited to be a part of and continue to be a part of for sky racing. That's cool. Got a lot to you got a lot to dig into. I just was mentioning this card at Gulfstream. I mean, the two you got these two features, obviously that are garnering the most attention, but the other seven stakes and then fold in the maiden races. It's it's a big day racing setting aside the entire flight a few hours today and the entire flight tomorrow to hopefully dive in and come up with some ideas of because it would be really fun if we can give the viewers something interesting. I'm also going to be writing a piece which all tweet out which are going to be runner by runner previews of the two big ones. But the quick look through the cards suggest that you're exactly right. There's there's a lot of meat on the bone here. Even beyond those first two certainly going to be interesting for those participating in the Pegasus World Cup betting championship. A lot of opportunities to spend the money. It's a two day contest. But my gut looking through quickly is that you're going to be handling a lot more on Saturday day that on. Friday, though, of course, that means there could be some great opportunities for those who want to be aggressive on Friday. 'cause I think so many people are going to be waiting to bet on this loaded Saturday card had the pleasure yesterday on the in money players podcast of catching up with Eddie Olczyk the inaugural champion from the Pegasus contest. He's looking forward to defending his title remotely. He'll be at the NHL all star game playing along on express bet. A lot of people are heading down there though. There's a bonus that you can win for playing in person. And a lot of contests players already descending on the Hallandale area. South Florida for what promises to be cracking weekend racing. Well, I it's funny Ray Arsenault is gonna join us to raise like the I can't even call them. Unofficial. I think raise something of the official. He's like he's like a WalMart greeter for the content. The godfather Ray, you're going, and he, you know, those guys did such a great job Lorne Allen and Ray of helping to get this Pegasus contest going, and they were very smart. They did it enough of an enough of an outsider's way where they can still participate in it. But certainly, I think everybody agrees it wouldn't have happened if not for their excellent efforts, and it's great to see this contest. Looks like it's going to be fig -nificant stronger this year from the what the little birds were telling me in terms of participation. I think that they're very pleased with the numbers, and I think they've come up with there's just showing that this financial model can be a win-win not unlike the world horse place tour where the house is putting up the purse not the players and that enables the players to churn so much that it can cover that amount. It's it's a very interesting business. Model in the kind of thing that there's more kinks to be worked out, but it should get to a point where contests can take another big leap forward. We've been taking a lot of it's been a lot of incremental progress. The last few years steady progress, this type of business model has the opportunity to blow contests up to the next level. And hopefully just show the whole industry growth area, they are and what a net positive. They can be for everybody. And we can learn some stuff Billy help racing in the process, the Pegasus contest, one of the most exciting things going from a horse players perspective. And Ray in the lads deserve a lot of credit for that the rays gonna join us when we're done here and the the the Bank roll application part and the Cup. Betting challenge has so much really. "Increasing the awareness of what the the live the live money. Format. What it what it could do? Because there is that there is that response to. To the contest seen that from for a certain period. You know, it seemed there was the uncertainty. What it was bring to the party. And this is I get more tangible for me. It didn't matter if it was a mythical bankroll and people playing along outside of the pools, it was still a positive because plenty of plenty of people that were playing that way. We're we're also involved in the in the pools, and it never made sense to me that you know, there were there were segments of the industry that that were uncertain as to the value of the of the contest element. But the bankroll really answers that the live money. I hope that that makes it very tangible to everybody as to what this what this offers. The numbers are overwhelming when you look at an event like Breeders Cup as big of a deal is that is as many thousands of people are there. Fifteen percent of the Amtrak handle in a typical year is coming just. From the players in that contest room. Now that doesn't even account for the fact that those same players are also playing outside the contest, I think the estimates. I heard back in the day where about another six percent is probably the contest players and they're pals sitting with them, and they're making in pick three in the pick six aren't counted in the contest, and the the it's all the better because this is money where the industry gets hold of that golden dollar. They make so much more money for the money bet on track. No doubt that the live bankroll contests. Give us a chance. Exactly. Like you said Steve to quantify that make it tangible. And I mean, the numbers we saw world horse player, store pilots. Still amazed me in three days. At Santa Anita. The here's we brought in. It was about eighty five players. They've been a million dollars. I mean, this is a million dollars of golden dollar on track handle. Coming from the contest world, folks, really need to pay attention. If they're not already in the industry pay attention to what contests can mean. In terms of giving them the shot in the arm and lifting the lifting the horse players, but not just players also the tracks and therefore everybody in the horsemen everybody in industry in benefit from putting an emphasis on this stuff and golf stream have shown strana group have done a great job getting it done and getting the Pegasus contests off the ground..

But you know, we'll cross those bridges when we get to the eventual. Hopefully, we'll get to a point where I can be participating in coverage of USA events from onsite and just beaming stuff back to love. That's cool and how much how much US action do they take? You know, we're we're we know from this side, we have seen more and more of the international content added to to the various distribution networks, and if people take varies interest. I mean, we're doing we're doing stuff with the Hong Kong, for instance. I've we've certainly taken Dubai racing over the years. But I don't I've never heard the flip side of this. Which is I don't even think I've brought it up with Nick lock now that I think about it. You know how much American racing. Is taken in and what kind of volume there is sky racing is covering USA stuff. Every night. I've had the opportunity to be a phone guest during the coverage offering thoughts on Gulfstream and Tampa races. Basically, they're racing ends or some evenings. They will have an all weather meet that they obviously give priority to, but then strategically around the all weather meeting, they will drop in whatever the best USA stuff is there's a lot of a lot of the Nyra circuit on there. I'm not sure exactly on the new channel which meetings, how many meetings and night are being taken. But I know that the stateside coverage has continued unabated. So there's really quite a lot. If you're sitting at home after the all weather over there, and you want to watch racing still in bed on racing you can do. So. And there are bookies who will take the action as well. They're making lines for the stakes races ahead of time. The MO much more conservative with the the in and out stuff. The prices coming from the shops just minutes before it can actually be a little tricky as pundit. Because by the time, you'd say the price on air, the price may have changed. But I guess it's not really different than para in that respect. But there's quite a bit of interest. I know from the podcast and just looking at the stats of where people come from. We have a small, but loyal portion of folks who follow from over there.
