Activists push for the release of vulnerable inmates from prisons
"Well some prisoners are expected to walk out of prison from this Tuesday in New Jersey the Chief Justice announced on Sunday that up to one thousand inmates will be released to reduce the high risk of contamination in prison according to The New York Times no other state has taken such sweeping action but the other cities including New York Cleveland Tulsa under Klopp in Oklahoma have moved to release a sick or vulnerable detainees I spoke to a former inmates now advocates of prison reform Vidal Goodman in New York City and he gave me an idea of the conditions on right because Ireland is horrible right exactly is built on trash the simple when it rains the trash from Ryker's actually ha goals next to beaches and stuff like that people can smell it close to their homes are we getting in there and the the crux offices don't even drink the water when you talk about rats and roaches oh my god beyond disgusting so you're basically describing a cesspit of illness of fleas for disease on book TV tell me about the living arrangements in writers so you had dormitories individuals who are like No sales but you can keep someone in dorm for thirty to forty fifty people so there's two different type of places where people can actually you know live at and I was in both places so basically if someone sick in the door commentary that means you're probably going to be sick if someone sick in the cell maybe you can get sick because you're going to be what everyone in the day room and now we've heard that New Jersey will release as many as one thousand people from its jails and president trump has also said that some non violent prisoners could be released what do you think about that Arron Arron release forty five thousand for now people that they had incarcerated in New York City they released like around twenty seven people we know how the corona viruses and we know how impacted people are we know how bad it can really get them even when I was on writers are just not prepared for me I'm at a level where like as much people need to be released from what you're saying makes sense you feel like they could do a lot more these are human beings and I think that another part about it is that we're talking my regular almond majority of some people in there are still awaiting trial even if they get sentenced and sent somewhere else that doesn't mean that the person supposed to suffer because of the chrome vice let me tell you something like I'd been in facilities where you're talking about six feet away from each other that is non existing facilities especially like records on other places I knew this was gonna happen like the coronavirus is going to hit our facilities especially on prison and jail the most part the suspected what good was just suspect valium this is just the beginning yes and the only thing about it is like we're putting spotlights on LA New York Washington but imagine the facilities and and and down south okay so what is a recommendation to control the coronavirus he met the jail system in the US I think the most important part is people were violated for parole probation they need to stop at a small percentage of it is people who had did crime and the largest percentage of people missing curfew or felony drug tests and that is the growing in population in America the parole and probation system so that's a start first right vidoe

Trump: New sanctions on Iran but U.S. "ready to embrace peace"
"President strop trump struck a conciliatory tone toward Iran in his first remarks since the Iranian strikes from saying today thanks Ron is standing down since there were no casualties NPR's timbre Keith has more just days after tweeting a warning to a Ron that if it struck US personnel or assets the U. S. would hit Arron very fast and very hard trump is responded to Tuesday's attack with a dramatically different approach Iran appears to be standing down which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world no American or Iraqi lives were lost trump said he would impose new economic sanctions on Iran in response and also offered this message to the Iranian people the United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it over the course of months trump has vacillated between taking a hardline with Iran and talking about wanting to meet with the country's leaders and make a deal Tamar Keith NPR news Iran says it launched last night's attack in retaliation for the U. S. drone strike last week that killed a top
Trump calls on other countries to abandon Iranian nuclear deal
"President trump addressed the nation today his first words got right to the point as long as I'm president of the United States Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon after Ron made good on its threats and fired ballistic missiles at two military bases in Iraq that house US troops it was a very tense night there were no reported casualties or injuries today the president touted America's military might but also said we do not want to use it he called on other nations to come together to strike a new deal to manage Iran's nuclear ambitions nations have tolerated Iran's destructive and destabilizing behavior in the Middle East and beyond those days are over Iran has been the leading sponsor of terrorism in their pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens the civilized world we will never let that happen tension is still in the air tonight at least two rockets fell in the green zone near the US embassy in Baghdad but without causing any casualties to make sense of all this we spoke with evil doll earlier today he served as US ambassador to NATO for four years during the Obama administration and is now president of the Chicago council on global affairs I as ambassador dollar for his gut reaction to trump's remarks today well I think we came to the brink of war and the president wisely decided to step down and away from that brink and decide that the escalation I've gone on far enough the danger of getting into a war at the con too great and the right thing to do now was to take the temperature down a little bit were there specific things trump said that really stood out for you yeah I think he said that he took the reigning in action as a way to stand down from the escalation and you said that was a good thing I think that was the right interpretation and your radiance decided that they have to respond in some form militarily to the killing us generals who the money and did so by making clear that they have to respond from Iran was a missile attack that in the end did damage to materials but not to people in the house in court in terms of what trance overall strategy is with Iran were you able to draw any conclusions today well here's the problem because the overall strategy that he has pursued since walking away from the nuclear deal in may of twenty eighteen has failed it led us to the brink of war because rather than Iran giving in to our maximum pressure campaign they decided to engage in what the Ron calls maximum resistance and as a result the two fundamental objectives that we have set ourselves a modification in Iran's behavior with regard to the beach and a further constraints on its nuclear program both of those objectives are further away today than they were in may twenty eighteen so rather than continuing down the sale pass this is the time it seems to me when the president having seen and stood at the brink of for what you re assessors entire strategy I'll take a new approach a lot of people think Iran's long game is getting the US out of Iraq completely informally making a racket total proxy of Iran is that what you believe that's what the Ayatollah Khamenei S. at today it's what president who I need tweet it today that clearly they want not only the United States out of Iraq they want the United States out of the region that is not in our interest it is in our interest to continue to have good relations and the continued presence economic political military in the region and therefore we have different objectives the question is are we going to achieve that through war are gonna cheetah through diplomacy an effective strategy I think the answer ought to be go for more effective strategies and we should up today which was only lettuce incredible yeah and as a former diplomat where is the room for pharmacy between the US and around at this point well the first thing to do is to re engage with our allies in Europe and indeed the China and Russia all of whom were members and signed up to the nuclear we have found ourselves now isolate once again alone in the world when it comes to both Iran writ large and the nuclear question specifically and rather than this the present it today calling on other countries to walk away from the nuclear deal we need to re engage with those parties and indeed with Ron to get back to the negotiation that allows for more stringent limitations on Iranians nuclear program a better and more coordinated strategy with our allies to deal with Iranian this behavior in the region and other stops but the first step for us is rather than telling the Europeans that they should do something they're not going to do which is get out of this agreement was to start working with the Europeans to find a common strategy towards the region in general and towards the Iran but the very first thing out of president trump's mouth today even before he said hello to the audience was Iran will never have a nuclear bomb basically as long as I'm alive well and I hope that that he's right about that that is a strategy that his two predecessors have also been pursuing but if that's the question why would he even go back to the negotiating table well because the way to get around without nuclear weapons is one of two ways you either prevented from doing so militarily and we just saw how dangerous that Rhodians or you do it through diplomacy so the trying we have decided that military action and further escalation is not the right way to go the only option we have left is diplomacy not diplomacy starts not just with Tehran but more importantly with our allies in Europe with Russia and China and even a dollar if you have the ear of the Iranian leadership what would you tell them I would tell them that if they want to make sure that their people I have a better economic future they need to engage with the United States and European allies Russia and China to find a new agreement that puts stringent limitations on if you're clear program while allowing it to gauge economically but the rest were if a dollar served as ambassador to NATO from two thousand nine to two thousand thirteen is currently the president of the Chicago council on global affairs thank you very much thank you for on a run in perspective on the crisis we reached out to send up a semi and Iran's capital she teaches American studies at Tehran university and a sympathetic to Iran's government from early in the morning could ever different feelings coming from the Iranians some of are very proud of what the Iranians have gone specially the military bases his target as was considered as one of the major cases on the fact that nothing happened to the missiles and they targeted the place of a proud of this at the same time people were worried about the reaction of the United States so for the Iranians I think the major issue right now is that this will in a sense of making Americans to withdraw from from the whole Middle East I think this was one of the major issues that was raised by Iran's supreme leader today inherent in his speech where he sat okay because a slap on the face of the Americans you tacked to the base and however he also said that the major issue for all is and that the Americans were little from the whole Middle East and did you get a sense of what might be around position if the US does not withdraw from at least Iraq I think the Iranians would wait and see what happens and if this presence means that the Americans are going to target you're wanting an interest you Manian figures official figures and for a day that would be another harsh reaction it was really interesting to hear trump began his speech with a straight line saying that Iran will never in my time have a nuclear bomb but after that let's hear president trump describing what he sees right now as a wrong position far ran appears to be standing down which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world so Xena is Arron standing down well first of all Iranians never claimed a D. are developing a nuclear weapon so first of all I think this assumption is that wrong or the premises long itself so what I would say is a doing is I'm not making a nuclear bomb and the whole thing is a mistake president trump also said this our missiles are big powerful accurate lethal and fast under construction or many hypersonic missiles the fact that we have this great military equipment however does not mean we have to use it we do not want to use it American strength both military and economic is the best deterrent then of a semi do you accept that statement at face value is this now the the opportunity for both parties to de escalate and we'll tensions now he's well I don't think there would be any signs of relations in the foreseeable future was what happened to draw also a money and his **** shin if it has a significantly you and make a major blow to the feelings of the Iranian so you so the massive presence of Iranians for the funeral of the journal essentially money in gun raising the issue of getting close or friends at this time since very in a sense very stupid because how you can kills a high ranking official Iranian also show and then talking about having translations a day Laney ins is enough but before this whole escalation started between Iran and the U. S. there were these demonstrations in Iran over corruption and austerity what happened to those well actually what happened was that the Iranians became very United after what happened to Joe will slay money especially yesterday when the this funeral was taking place and I wasn't street I so people from different walks of life participating in the funeral because general Soleimani was like a sort of person who did not belong to specific Uranian political party he had a very simple life and people felt like he was also leaving the same or similar life close to the ordinary Iranians and this I actually created this universe themselves from being United against a foreign invasion once I got to say there were reports of many victims killed by running authorities during and after those demonstrations I mean do you think the families of those right those victims are just giving up and United by soul monies that suddenly I don't have contact with these people to ask about their feelings however this is the sort of thing that might happen in any other country then a foreign invasion or in front of a four nation is vice people usually get United and they put aside their differences so this majority I might say that these are all day actually are United not not just FOR D. Iranian government but for did hold the integrity of the lawn and its security xenon high semi teaches at the university of Tehran she joined us from the capital of Ron thank you very much thank you for having
Trump: No Americans or Iraqis were killed in Iranian strike at military base in Iraq
"President trump confirmed today that there were no Americans or Iraqis killed and that Iranian missile strike on two military bases in Iraq speaking today in the White House trump said Arron appears to be standing down and declined to outline any further military action against Iran as we continue to evaluate options in response to Iranian aggression the United States will immediately impose additional punishing economic sanctions on the Iranian regime these powerful sanctions will remain until around changes its behavior let's bring in NPR's Tamera Keith she's at the White House and camera runs attack was of course in retaliation to the killing a top Iranian general because some still money but it sounds like based on what the president said today that he has decided not to further escalate this military confrontation what else is the White House saying today about that attack at those military bases in Iraq you know what is remarkable here is just how much president trump has vacillated between sort of this this tough guy approach and then being very conciliatory and today it's all about being conciliatory you know that's just a few days ago last Saturday he tweeted this warning to Iran that if it struck US sites assets or Americans if they were hit that Iran would be hit very fast and very hard well today he is now saying that he wants and the end and that he sees a Ron as standing down I I think that he and and other US officials are reading into this this missile strike they these strikes from Iran add that although it although they did go after American related sites they did not kill Americans and there is a sense that it may be on may have been on purpose yeah let's talk a little bit about some of the things that he did announce which was the economic sanctions on Iran what more do we know about that decision and how this will be received in Iran you know it this is not the first time obviously president trump has imposed sanctions he also impose sanctions economic sanctions after that attack on a Saudi oil facilities so he has at times responded to military aggression with non military response with an economic response in and this is part of his maximum pressure campaign against Iran to try to get around to come to the table to talk about its nuclear program of course president trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal now in his remarks today he's staying up the whole you know Europe all these other people that were part of the Iran nuclear deal you should pull out of it too and then we should all get together and negotiate something new yeah with a little time I have with you let's talk about the optics of this announcement trump was flanked by vice president Mike pence secretary of state Mike Pompeii and military leaders what message do you think the White House is trying to send of course being able to get to the table with Iran yeah you know I was in the room looking at the this as seen and and they had such stone faces there was there was not a movement in their faces all of these people behind trump sort of sending the signal of you know American military

B. A. P. is our number eight hundred two eight eight nine two two seven how should we respond predictably as many of us thought we would get the struck back at from Iran but this was we did know how and as of right now we've got the overt missile strikes and targeting two bases where soldiers are at again no casualties no deaths as of right now which is very very good how should we retain at Rev respond what should our response be one of the responses could be for us to just told said study and say well we don't have any casualties kinda like what trump did when we got hit when our drawn was was struck down over the street upon those in international waters I'm maybe we should add strike back unfortunately let me tell you what I think Iran's operation should be called tonight what operation the Iran's operation is tonight listen closely it's very important to know that we killed the second most powerful and prominent person in the entire country that's a huge freaking beatable we did I mean trump I said the other night and Friday night was went down the balls is the word this is a massive deal and I'm it shows the unpredictability of trump in a good way we really did a big deal tonight what out what Iran did tonight what Iran launched is but I call operation save face tonight Iran launched operation save face I say it's operation save face because Iran had to do something they had to respond people were saying at trump campaign saying in in I I agree ultimately this could happen but you know this could bring them to the negotiating table well it absolutely could and it still might I believe it very well may but they had to do operation save face first operation safe faces you can look back up we're going to do Kerio all right might be around with Paul Miller bonnets into and so that's what they did now I have to tell you night what we do ten night if we choose to respond tonight or tomorrow and the next day is credited call and I think one of the keys is if they kill one of us if fallout one or more of our soldiers were killed tonight it would be on it would be on and we would have to have a massive response as far as hitting where the where they launch the missiles from and killing a heck of a lot more people than they they killed with us but by god's grace no one was killed on our side tonight and so if they kill one of us were killed one of us than it would be over it would have to be we have to go after big time but let me ask you a question tonight is this worth bracing through if this is the extent of it is this worth it checking out the number two person in the entire country because I don't think this was a well planned response you know call the strike to directly in into the Iranian state TV reported the supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini he was number one number two is dead number two can't plan the attack he dead he did we kill them he did it we've done smacks him we don't pimp slapped on the outer universe and so I think this is operation save face I don't think this is some grand plan I don't think they have one because they do that ran everything is dead yes the guy that was his top lieutenant who he confided in a lot and share with a lot mentor a lot is is has taken over I understand that for for a general so the money but I just I I think this was a save face thing like they had to respond otherwise they're like we we we suck we are wimpy but I think they responded in a way that they knew would it look like they were coming to us but we're not gonna actually his heart I think that's the big deal and by the way why did we stop what in some of our missiles stop and intercept their missile missiles that they fired at us these the short range missiles what we believe that they were these church our range cruise missiles are we are patriot batteries are not there we don't have patriot batteries I bet you they gonna be there soon so I think we have a choice and I think that if we don't if we don't lose anybody out of this I think we might want to hold and you might think that makes us seem wimpy you might think that means we lose and what's amazing is the liberal leftist said the trump was weak Chris Murphy the Democrats under from Connecticut just before Christmas read for Christmas saying that trump is weak and not responsive trump did this he blew up number two and now they're saying well he's a unpredictable is crazy he is unpredictable and it's working to our advantage and I think holding like he did we are attacked by the drone strike.

"All eyes are on the Middle East today after a U. OPEC and its allies consider Oil production cuts
"And let's head to the commodity space for the week ahead now for that we bring in Bloomberg's Jessica summers Bob OPEC and its allies will meet in Vienna to decide whether to extend support I cut into next year these producers pump about half of the world's oil and had agreed earlier this year to cut production by one point two million barrels a day to keep markets balanced Bloomberg's Europe oil market in OPEC reporter grant Smith and joins me from London to discuss what we can expect from the key meeting great to have you join grant hi Jessica okay grant so what we all want to know here is it likely that OPEC and its allies make deeper oil output cuts or will producers decide to continue with their current agreement and just stick to the production targets already in place and either way how long would a potential extension to the agreement even last so about a month ago cool is signaling it was getting ready to cut deeper he had to top officials in the group saying things like that they would do whatever it takes to keep market supported next year all options are on the table and everybody felt because there is so much crude around in such a surplus expect for the first twenty twenty that they would in fact cut production for the battle seems to have changed in the past few weeks and we five issue and delicate saying that there is no plan in motion right now for costs that it would simply be too hard send that they're also a little bit more hopeful look the market is going to be better than the the it's a next year to look at this point that will get an extension of the current Cup does at the moment run out in March several delegate to said that they would all be willing to push them to at least the middle of next year but you have to some others who say that maybe they could go on for even longer perhaps into the third quarter of twenty twenty or the end of next year just so they can be sure that they've done all that they need to do to keep markets in balance thanks yeah interesting so in terms of the current agreement how has complaints been and what to expect from the key producers like Saudi Arabia and Russia moving forward if the group does extend the cuts overall compliance is very strong the promise of you said to cut by one point two million barrels a day in actual fact it's been about fifty percent more than that but it's also being quite mixed but extra compliance largely come about because of the review of the group's biggest producer has caught about twice as much as it promised to do with others in the group it's been a little bit more mixed you have for example countries like a rock in Nigeria which I've done almost none of the testing that they promised with Russia the biggest non OPEC member in the coalition they've done may be about eighty percent of what they promised but there seem to be finding different excuses to not fully meet their commitments for example they were saying recently that they have some new production that that shouldn't be categorised within the the overall agreement so I see Saudi Arabia leading the group there in terms of cuts and what about the political turmoil that's essentially head OPEC producing nations like a rock Arron Libya Algeria and Venezuela what our analysts expecting to see next year in terms of potential unexpected supply shortages and does this mean that effectively we will see OPEC limit their output even further situation from these countries has been getting a lot worse as we had to be meeting shot in particular on the rock thing to see now search in political unrest all the countries you mentioned they have history all flop production problems and analysts have said that we could see losses for further losses in some this next year and that's kind of what happened throughout the OPEC agreement since stopped at that they may have come to the promised but a lot of the hi this is being taken care of by laws that are being the only control that haven't been plans and certainly countries like Venezuela which is producing the least in decades or say a wrong which is in both very badly by US sanctions have the potential to to see for the law next year which could end up being poor health market grant thanks very much for joining me this is one of the topics were watching in commodities for the week ahead in New York I'm Jessica
Israel supports ISIS?
"How bizarre is is part of a bizarre interview but necessary with the president of a run Chris Wallace at Israel supports isis and put them in their hospitals but they do say this that the Israeli said they were told by our European allies that we were going to live to some sanctions in order to set up a meeting with president trump present from just came back said that never happened I never agreed to that joining us now is Amil changed every day is just returned from a Riyadh Saudi Arabia it was also in Singapore he also has a book that's about to come out calling sailing true north tendrils in the voyage of character and you can follow on add separatists and add real stab dot com add role first off they have a good answer is real sports I suspected I want. so bizarre I mean the Iranians let's face it live in a a strange parallel universe that is in orbit around the planet does work and they're not coming back anytime soon it's just the nature of the regime like that that has consistently isolated itself obviously Israel of fight very effectively broadly across counter terror against Hezbollah which is a creature of a rant against the Islamic state against al Qaeda against Dodge Israel is at one of our principal allies in counterterrorism across the entire spectrum bright so here's what he said this morning the German chancellor prime minister of England in the present France for New York in on since at this meeting take place for the present and America said that I will lift the sanctions it was up to four debate what sanctions will be lifted they had said clearly they will they will we will lift all sanctions he added but this action wasn't a matter that was acceptable I mean that in the atmosphere of sanctions in the existence of sanctions in the taxes atmosphere of maximum pressure even if we want to negotiate with the Americans in the five plus one framework no one can predict what the end of the result the negotiations will be trump has tweeted back around one knee lift sanctions imposed on them in order to meet I said of course the answer's no this is a big loss for a run the matter how you cut it yep indeed it is and this is kind of last exit before the bridge kind of moment for Iran and they were being offered an opportunity to sit back down at the table because here's the really big news Brian of the whole week is that United Kingdom Germany and France have now moved closer to the United States in this construct so with our European allies which you and I've been discussing per month with them we can collectively put the pressure on Iran and get them to the negotiating table but they are living in la la land if they think we're gonna start by lifting sanctions it's not gonna work that way and they have got to wake up to that and if they do and they do come to the table I think we can constructed deal they'll be a lot better than the previous Arron deal. in it'll be one that the Russians and the Chinese that stuff around plus five construct brings those two into it and I think that is the path out of the current conundrum war and because what Iran is doing striking Saudi oil fields which by the way I was in Riyadh on Sunday when those drones had. that is not the path forward in this crisis so we think the the what were your thoughts as this was happening. first and foremost that strategically this is an extremely a bold move on the part of the Iranians to go after a major major element in the global energy system and Brian you can drop a plumb line from those ground attacks to the fact that the Europeans are now more or less with us in this journey and then secondly tactically as a military guy you got to ask yourself wow what combination of new military systems got through the Saudi air defenses which are not bad and the answer is it's a combination of thrones Castel probably some special forces but that new mix that kind of new triad of those elements plus cyber I think it's gonna be a turning point in military operations

"The rest of the season now against a team that currently as a winning rare dave verbal sca and that's against minnesota at detroit on thanksgiving day and that's the game they wanna have because that's the i many to catch i will predict right now the lines are going to win the nfc north i said minnesota i'll stay with them i have no reason to not i think that they can still win that division sitting at six into and pat and the lines are foreign four why would i go away from that i mean they're getting serviceable quarterback play out a case kinam they are teddy bridgewater be back as the backup possibly this week and we'll see where that goes and in you know why they have a really good too great defense and who the backup is insignificant because if you make someone your number two quarterback it means in this case he's healthy enough the la exactly right one snap away from going into game so who knows if that means he wanted to bring the starter as that goes several weeks down the road again all that is to be to be determined on the green may side of things mike what can you say it it's is not that complicated you lose arron rogers you're done you can say whatever you want my mccarthy could say whatever you want it that day in and they can rally whatever and yeah last night humbly wasn't there only problem wasn't winds with the first visiting team in the history of lambeau field not a plant in again they're not good enough everywhere else to pick up for that slack they're just not and it will cost so we had bilic on in the previous hour bilic wonder super bowl playing small ball he wanted to super bowl without great quarterback without in one of the great defense has ever you could that's exactly right you can do that way but they can't do that in green bay that way now they're not enough at that or good enough at anything else all right mike mike are tomorrow morning at this time.

"Thursday night game took a little bit away what what what what i wanna know what you don't know about on the red zone effects rating could it be that instead of twenty nine till one game um a lot of people are watching the red nose and catching warden they normally would add olympic out this why don't you out a rating or a good question and i do think that the red zone does effective mole i think that's fair but i would think that you agree with me that there is a lack of does around this league right now there is a lack of discussion about actual games an actual performances on monday's there is a lack of basel electrcity juice whatever you want to call it regarding sunday's games on monday people are just not into it it is background noise it is elevator music for too many people and that's the difference between this nfl and previous nfl's to me is that it is easier to ignore this leak it is less compelling and as a result when there aren't match up to that you're looking forward to like who wants to watch the packers now without our rogers i don't i don't and i enjoyed watching the packers with arron rogers so you lose players like that you know who's who's in a watch cavs play without lebron james i mean when you have star players out who's going to watch the giants outside of new york without odell beckham giants are boring we're just talk about the dolphins are boring there's just too much boring there's too many teams that don't offer anything that makes you go wow and hopefully it's just a blip on the two thousand seventeen radar.
