"Um uh, Brendan Fraser? Yes. I leave. He showed a lot of potential is an actor Hey was in some big movies, people. People seem to like him a lot. He had, um, a cause. I think he has considerable talent. Hey, did that great movie with Ian McKellen monsters and men are some monsters, gods and monsters? Gods, gods and Mom was great in them, and he so he did some serious acting there. I always I always pushed for him to be Superman. I thought he'd be a good Clark camp. He kind of did the kind of it was kind of too bad that he did, You know, George of the jungle and that made a lot of money, though. But he hasn't been seen much since George of the jungle. Well, it looks like he's going to be in a new film. And maybe this will explain why we haven't seen much of him. He's going to play a £600 rest recluse. In a new film by Darren Aronofsky. Who was a £600. Well, No, he's playing a £600 re clues. So maybe that's why we haven't. It's making him She's been in Doom Patrol. He's robot man in Doom Patrol. "Is Up it's your host Eliane. Horn. Welcome back to the talk house podcast. We have quite a show for you this week the legendary Alejandro Russky in conversation with the man whose name you just heard on the intro Darren Errand Hausky to help me intro today's rematch episode joining from across town the man, the myth, the legend himself. I think you're referring to me I didn't know man there's no. There's well, there is a man but no, definitely, no legend Nick Dawson. Editor. In Chief of talk as film I am stoked to be back for as you say part two of this amazing episode we had them talk together in two, thousand, seventeen it's twenty, twenty, the greatest year of our history. Possibly or the worst it's difficult to tell but they're back which is wonderful and for really great reason Khodro Ski has a new movie called psycho magic. A healing are is now exclusively through Alamo on demand it's about this form of therapy that he grazes artistic therapy and it's a super fascinating film and from a super fascinating men hotter of ski is of course the. French filmmaker and artist best known for his films Alto, and the Holy Mountain and Nikki, has released this new film at the age of ninety one gear. It's remarkable. He's working on a budget comic burks burks more films. He's been on a tear recently making a slew of documentaries and fiction films. He is really an example for us all of of how true creativity never ceases an artist is an artist at any age. Yeah. Well, speaking of age I know that Alejandro thinks of Darren Aronovski as a bit of a whippersnapper. But Aronovski is, of course a hugely accomplished and lauded filmmaker his films include Pie Requiem for a dream, the fountain, the wrestler Black Swan Noah and mother yeah. Is Fascinating because mother came out made it three months after they had their last version back in two thousand, seventeen and Darren had his Tarot read by Hutter of ski and if you go back and listen to. That episode, I I'm pretty convinced as some of the stuff that came up was you know things that pertain to the release of mother at Yeah. It was an amazing episode and you know having them back together was equally compelling and of course, with these two, they cover a lot of ground. Now last time they were together we were all sitting in a room. because. Of the Coronavirus Darren and Alejandro joining from their respective homes and Nick, I was transported to Paris. Via, Alejandro seemingly, open window and the the occasional moped and beep I was back in one of my favorite cities it is deeply evocative I think if you if you just inhale you can get. A whiff of gold wise is a there's a gendarme probably ready to grab you. If you transgress in any way, it's all we also hear Pascal Allah. Hundred wife who helps a little bit with translation throughout today's show. Yeah, and is a major figuring his life not only in terms of his personal life. But also a collaborator, she was a cinematographer on psycho magic, a healing art. and was the costume designer, his previous two movies. She was hugely helpful in both helping record the conversation and instead of interject with a few English words when they were needed, and of course, I think of of hierarchy only as a great artist. But also as an like a remarkable philosophy, you know just listening to him talk about the world and about consciousness as he says concierge. He really. So carefully considers the way that he sees the world or with the way that he sees himself and his perspective on arts on therapy on the pandemic, his perspectives are always unique and really compelling yet nick. It was so fascinating for me to hear about Ross Concept of cycle magic to hear him break down what that is and how it's different from psychotherapy. He wants to differentiates it from a form of therapy that creates clients and all about. This is something he does for free and that is a very pure thing and he's A. Very, pure man in the way that he you know he has incredible health at ninety one which she he talks about the way that he sustains that and he thinks himself now as a beginner a master even though Darren. Collison Meister, which I think is appropriately deferential amen the maestro certainly has some ideas about the quote idiot moment of the pandemic he talks about how he would script the end of twenty, twenty, four America and what he's excited to learn the will of achieved in three hundred million more years. Nick we roll it, roll the tape. La La. I'm good. Where are you? You're alive. So Am I and where are you where? Else we'd both got. These wife. Hey, how are you? Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Are you willing to speak with you know really willingly I need To. Me When I you'll have the. The, world's. Explain what they want. No problem. Are. You what country are you in? Fame Fatty, France. Paris. Okay. Okay I. It's. It's nice to see Your House I. Love All the icons on the fireplace behind you. Luke because. Books is it's all books Oh. Great..

What was the moment in your life that You were like, I want to do this for a living. What did it go back to a your childhood? Was it a sports moment or was it somebody in your a friend or family member that was in the field? That should get you wanted to inspire it's funny. It's great question. I think I mean, love sports Growing Up played hockey played baseball loved both a lot. And I think growing up was kind of like, all right, I'm probably not going to play this professionally and that's a realization. I think, you know, ninety 9.9% of kids have at some point, but it's like I don't want to just leave this..

"Enough about that the other ship. So there's two other shows though one is the Justice League dark when I are you mentioned. there's not a lot of details about that. All we know is that it's a quote major series based on DC characters in the Justice League. Dark Universe just dark is the more supernatural Justice League version where Constantine and swamp thing or in a and for longtime up cure Mondo Torre was trying to get a Justice League dark movie made but that never came about and then the third and final show is called duster which is a a crime series. Set in the nineteen seventies and J.J. Abrams and La. Toya work in Arco writing. It and is like this one sounds the least interesting to me because I I don't know I don't care so there you have it elsewhere a TV show based on the video game missed is in the -ment bend host Alan. Yes so this actually been in the works. Since last year I think Village roadshow entertainment. Bought the rights to missed. Which is Super Super Popular Point and click adventure puzzle game that was released for the PC in the early nineteen nineties. So some of you may remember this A lot of you. I'm sure it was probably before your time. I'm old enough to remember. You know spending hours playing this game. And it's basically the premises it just drops you into this empty world and you had to click around what you had. You had almost no context and had to just sort of click around and learn why you were there. What was going on? And there's all the steep mythology embedded into it. I guess the the plan is to make a movie and a TV show and maybe more games or something like just build out this this intellectual property in a huge way and now the news is that Ashley Edward Miller. Who was one of the screenwriters of the first thor movie and x? Men First Class has been hired to write the pilot. Enter serve as the show runner on the show. So Miller has worked on Terminator Sircar Sarah Connor Chronicles while it's tough to say and fringe and recently. He wrote an episode of the TV series lower. But he hasn't really done much in the past few years or at least he hasn't hasn't worked on. Much that has been produced. Screenwriters are constantly working on stuff and maybe doing rewrites and stuff that just doesn't get made so. His list of credit is not huge. But I think that that doesn't necessarily mean that he's been like a break between you know since two thousand thirteen or something like that so I I liked the projects that he's he's worked on so far general I'm just interested to see how anybody is able to sort of coalesce. The deep ridiculous mythology of missed into that is popular and makes a lot of sense for modern audiences. I remember After High School I was working at computer city which was a big retail store that sold computers. It was owned by the company that owned Radio Shack and I was there the day that the Miss Sequel Riven came out. And I'm glad I spent so long my favorite game for so long and I work the register today and it was later. Customer Service Whatever And there was never you know it was computer city. People were there to buy computers and at the time computers. Were not something that everybody had. It was not that exciting so there was never really excitement around computer city by came to work today and it was like a long line outside the computer city and I was like. What is this ribbon I? I'd never heard of myths before I'd never played it So I ended up. Buying ribbon in getting totally sucked in the mid series is interesting in two ways. I think number one it kind of like escape rooms before there were escape rooms. Because you're going around doing all these puzzles trying to escape this island you know. Xilin and number two kind of had that mystery element that lost. Had I'm kind of surprised that it's taken Hollywood discount to kind of get something going in the Miss Universe because if I like the successive of lost You know over a decade ago. I would have thought that someone would have jumped on this Chris had. Did you ever try any of the missed games? No I never. I never played this game. The only real games I had on my computer were like Duke. Nukem odd world. Remember that game yeah. The little creatures stuck their tongue it was really discussing gain farting all the time. Why did that exist? I don't know oh I had Steven Spielberg's director's chair. Which was awesome. Oh that was good. Those are my games. I completely forgot that that exist. Don't they remake that that would I mean ship and also my computer was so old. Couldn't handle the game so got to a point. There's a point where after you shoot your movie you're supposed to like render it and my my computer could never finish the game so I never got to see my final film. I know I've been chasing at my whole life and my white whale okay. That is so sad. That is the evangelists origin story. That's right now. You know why I'm like this fall because Steven Spielberg's director's chair okay. Let's let's move on to another sad story. This one is of Darren aaronow Skis Batman movie which I always like to like imagine. What would a daring Aronovski Batman movie? Look like it was supposed to start walking Phoenix and apparently. That's the reason why I didn't get made Chris. Tell us about it. Yes so before. Christopher Nolan rebooted Batman Darnall ASCII was trying to make a movie based on a Batman Year. One and he wanted to make it like a gritty seventy s. French connection style movie and apparently in a new interview. He revealed that he really wanted walking Phoenix. Who of course would later play the joker to play Batman and the studio wanted Freddie Prinz Junior and in this quote from our Nascar he says I remember thinking. Oh we're making two different films here. It was a different time. The Batman I wrote was definitely a way different type of tank. They ended up making so it sounded like the studio wanted a more traditional Blockbuster Batman Dare Not Oscar. Ski was going for something different. And of course something different is eventually what we got. Because Nolan's Batman was much different than ushered in this whole new era of quote unquote realistic movies. But at the time Darren was trying to make this. I think he really wanted to make it like this. Hard are very violent. Gritty take on year one and at the time the studio didn't go for it and of course years later we got joker which is a hard. Arcana pig movie so starring Joaquin Phoenix. And it's become one of the biggest films that has ever been released by Warner Brothers. Maybe yeah so that that shows you. How how the Times had changed drastically so daring. Aronovski ahead of his time as always Lastly we have this story about Steven Spielberg. He may have saved a fan favorite alien in the way to Star Wars movie than what we know. Yes so neal scanlan who is the creature and special makeup effects creative supervisor for most of the new actually I think all of the New Star Wars Movies since force awakens has been going around and doing a lot of interviews for the rise of skywalker and he and his team actually set a told empire. The I'll read his quote here. It could be a rumor. But I believe J.J. Abrams screened the movie for Steven Spielberg and at the end. Spielberg said what happened to Babu Frick. Everybody Thought Oh God what did happen to Babu. So evidently people just sort of forgot about him and he was not in the very end of the movie because as a rise of skywalker exists in its current form that will frick POPs up in Zoya blessed ship at the very end of the movie and he pops up and sort of does his little catchphrase noise and everybody goes crazy because everybody loves Babu Frick but evidently that was not in their originally and the the team at I limb found a another sequence that they had shot of that character. And then just lifted out Bob Frick from it and put him like inserted him digitally into sorry glossiest ship at the end and it looks like Steven Spielberg was the one who inspired by just asking. What the Hell happened has guy and I think he. He ended up saving the character. And you know as we know that could that decision could have huge ripple effects throughout the entire Star Wars Larger Universe. Maybe not the movies but like you know books and comics and spinoffs and all that kind of stuff like that character. Existing now could drastically change the way that things work. So I guess if that happens in your huge Babu Frick fan you have Steven Spielberg to thank for it. Yeah and I'm not sure if you mentioned this. But his planet the planet they him. Zuri were from Ca Jimmy or were not from but they lived on Was blown up so they would have been dead if they didn't show up at the end of that movie. I know even The most the people hate rises skywalker. The most love Bobby Frick except for our own Chris Evangelista who hates everything crashed. Why do you hate bobby for everything I just? I don't care about Babu. Free doesn't do anything for me and I feel like that ending is a real cheap because it I believe this story because it really does feel like an after the fact thing react like he's just in the cockpit while like that planet had like children on it like no one cares about them like they're all dead as long as this up. It's we didn't see children. We didn't see the people of the planet so they don't matter. I mean we saw John Williams but were there only like two people on this planet. There was Keri Russell Babu Frick and that was it. Hey on the planet that the only people we know about. They're the only people we care about. S- No. I will say this like I Chris. How dare you questioned Steven Spielberg and his decision to save? Bobby Frick I mean in Steven. Spielberg is your God. Listen if his God damn computer game had worked for. Maybe I wouldn't be questioning him right now. That's all I'M GONNA say. I will say this that I love Bobby. I love the Guy Worker. I love that Babu. Frick is alive. I do think that moment feels weird and it does feel like it was put together in post so Yeah I'm too my hair. I'm glad that he's alive. That way. Eventually we can get Babu Frick a star wars story so maybe someday yeah even even Shirley Henderson who did the performance and the vocal and stuff for the puppet character. She didn't even think that Baba was gonna make it and she was sort of surprised. I think to to discover that he'd been inserted digitally into the end. So okay you can find. More of all of our work.

"Yeah everyone writes. The fans had their own questions. On this very topic it means it's time for cosmic queries. The poll question I do Rene Douglas from Pittsburgh wants to know what actually defines a moon for example. Mars is moons Phobos and day MOS are not round and are captured asteroids moons but they re Pretty Lane as far as moons go. So what is the moon. It's a rock that orbits the planet Iraq did orbits a planet that's a moon also or a bit another say asteroids. Asteroids moons too. Yeah yeah so it's a smaller solid object orbiting another solid object. That's probably not a star. Yeah and but at the object is large enough then. Their center of motion sits in space between the two of them. Then you might call that a double planet but the object is not so massive that it pulls the center of mass out in space and it's deep inside the larger object. Then it's it's doing most of the motion around and so such is the case with our moon and US and all the other moons of all the other Planets Pluto has a moon. That's so so big that it does this and the center mass in space. So it's more like a double object double planet. Didn't you know what I thought I. I saw coming no. No yeah got demoted saddlebrook. Yeah we we aided and abetted that you didn't care for it to be a planet. Yeah we did it. I if I had known that. I'm not sure I would come here. You're more moon question. I do not Wolfson Don on facebook. Wants to know because Matt doesn't waste time wants to know. Why does the Earth only have one moon? But you're Jupiter gets thirty and and does the Earth have moon envy char well. Jupiter has now as far as we can tell way more than thirty minutes the reason basically the Jupiter has so many moons is because there's so much gravity that it can hold onto more moons and there's more material more objects in the orbit of Jupiter for it it to capture at had more material to start with to make moons in situ as well Institute means at the same time in the same place. You don't have to tell that to me okay. Sorry does Earth have moon envy. I Dunno Neil. Should we be envious of the Moon. I'll tell you why not okay because we have like the fifth-biggest Moon in the solar system but we're the fifth-biggest planet in the solar system. So it kind of matches right. Okay tighten I think is a little bigger sure. Yeah and Gannon Vietnamese. That might be it. We're in the top five moons of the hundreds of moons in the solar system. So I think we're the MO I don't envy we have beautiful eclipses that no other planet has because moons are so tiny compared to the size of the sun or moon is nice and fat and perfectly.

"Beautiful heather. Sure why are we so resistant baby just in the West. But perhaps in general. Why are we so resistant to the inevitable? Reality of death. Well there so there are other species that sort of understand. There's a recent story of an ORCA that carried her calf around worker weeks. Yeah or go that had died and carried it around for weeks so they have some idea of death but I I think we're the only species that really can anticipate our own death which leads to anxiety right and even religious people who supposedly believe leaving heavens so you shouldn't be scared of death because you're GonNa go to some beautiful place. They don't WanNa die either right so there's something about I think losing your consciousness your awareness of comfort in. Maybe our bodies are going to be recycled and turned into something beautiful but if I consciousness isn't there for eternity that's that's quite frightening to people so but we're fascinated by death in movies and news stories and and what does it mean to be fascinated. Aided by something that we fear well. I think that it's it's the great unknown. It's this great mystery. So films and media and ways can Either interpret what happens in death to give us comfort. I mean the fountain was an example of that in a way that it's not just there is nothing there might be something there might be something spiritual and so we can visualize that imagine what it might be like to die. That might give us some comfort and that is our obsession with it. I think kids are fascinated with T.. He wrecks among all dinosaurs. They can be eaten by T REX and the university festival by black holes. Because you can be eaten by a black hole. I think it's fascinating at one. When children's I realized that they're going to die and how they interpret the and for me this why I became a neuroscientist because when I first realized the five I was going to die if I can I keep my thoughts? How can I keep them all my brain that makes them? How does my brain mic my thoughts? And how can I keep them very advanced play lovely. No Charles. How how you view death coming from the universe everything dies right planets dies? Stars died even black holes dot this very holistic. It is so in my sense the concept except of death is really a transition from what you are now to what you will be in the future so in that sense. If you're comfortable with that there's nothing to fear. I think this idea of being uncomfortable uncomfortable. Death is exactly what they're talking about. We're afraid that we won't have a legacy that eventually. No one will remember the things that we value from others someday. No no one will value us for it and that's our search for eternity for longevity for something in the future. If you think astro physically that the idea well you are going to change but somehow what you were will become something else that may be even more grand in more beautiful. Don't worry about it but I don't even think it's sort of a bit of a narcissistic. I want to be remembered but Dr Seuss I just like experiencing life. I don't even care if I'm remembered whatever but I want to smell the rose and you see my children and so I just liked the experience of being alive or are you afraid traded death. I don't even like it when my turn is over in a game. One last question before I let you go here if science could prevent death should we. I like that question Well Insofar as death is often caused caused by some sort of illness or disease which involves human suffering. I think there's something that we can cure a preventable disease. We should And and as we start doing that life will inevitably get more longer and longer and were living way longer Even just the invention of antibiotics right and so oh. I think for sure we should do that. And if it becomes that we figured out a way to keep us alive indefinitely. Maybe it's person's choice when they want to go. Oh and they'll be the you know those feel bad for all the people that we lost. You didn't have the option to stay alive and I don't think there's anything wrong with it other than the fact that it might get get a bit boring after a while you know and then you can choose to go but it'd be nice if it could be your choice when to go rather than having some horrible disease if we choose not to die. We'll we'll need more planets. Yeah that's.

"And we were starting to show it to people we really had no idea what it was going to become and how big it was going to get an even two weeks into the release. No one really understood what the movie was. So I don't know if I could have helped with that to figure out oh, Natalie Portman and Vincent Casella do some type of formula and realize that it's actually going to work for people. Maybe I don't know how sophisticated these things will get, but a lot of it was just unexpected in like the idea the black swan idea of something out of the ordinary blocks wanted self was a block swan event. Almost at a time. But I did want to ask you one more question about your invite environmental work. So you're a board member of Sierra Club. And a lot of your at least a couple of your films have focused on the environment and earth in some way. There are a lot of people here who are volved in helping and changing the environment. What's the one thing that you would ask the people in this room to consider with regards to the environment? That's a good question. I do think it's the paramount issue of our time all other issues, you know, sort of pale in comparison when you don't have a home to live in and people have always asked me it's over wellm ING feeling of what can I do? And suddenly a lot of pessimism shows up. But I'm an incredible optimist in that. I've seen amazing things happen in change really quickly. And I do believe. In our future. And when people ask me, what am I going to do? You know, do I am plug certain things. I it comes down to one thing we really have to rely on governments to change to change and to and to help us move into this new into this new future. And so if I have one message on the eve of the election, it's vote for people who believe in science. That's all you can do go for people who live in science..
