"The nerds welcome to another episode of this. Podcast called the dictionary. Yes we are at the top of page one. Ten One ten. It is amazingly page. That's before one eleven first word is be stung. B E Hyphen S. T. U. N. G. It is it is in N. It is an adjective from eighteen. Twenty to having a red puffy appearance as if from being stung by a bee as in Bee Stung Lips. Those my personal opinion is those can look. Kinda weird you you. Google Bee Stung Lips. And you're bound to find some funky pictures. Next is Beeswax Noun from sixteen fifty five and we have the number one definition for the word. Wax NEXT IS BEAT. Noun from before the twelfth century a biennial garden plant of the Goose Foot family that includes several cultivars and that has thick edible leaves with long. Pt Olds and often swollen purplish red routes. Also it's route used especially as a vegetable as a source of sugar and four edge. The scientific name for this biennial garden plant is Beta vulgaris and in parentheses. It says after let's see includes several cultivars as Swiss chard and sugarbeet. So those are a couple. Examples beets are pretty healthy for you You know you. Maybe don't Wanna eat them every single day like Dwight from the office but they are good for you on occasion and it might turn your p kind of red So don't don't freak out. Don't don't be scared. It is a very common occurrence if you have some beats anyway. We're going to move on to beat armyworm. Armyworm is one word and then beat is its own word. Noun from eighteen ninety four and armyworm that typically eats the fully `age of Beets Alfalfa and vegetables. And the scientific name is spot up terra or it's probably pronounced spot Darah exit. I love scientific names. I have no idea what they mean. Though next is Beetle B. E. E. T. L. E. It is the I form Noun from before the twelfth century. I'm looking did I miss them at Emoji? No I think we're good number one. Any of an order of insects having four wings of which the outer pair are modified into stiff elettra that protect the inner pair when at rest number to any of various insects resembling a beetle. That word illiterate. I've never seen that before the L. Y. T. R. I hope I pronounced it correctly. This is from Middle English. Bettiah B. E. T. y. l. l. e. from the old English Bitola Akin to beaten which means to bite so Beatles bite. They don't necessarily all bite though. But that's where the word came from. It looks like now we have the second form of beetle it is a verb Specifically an inch transitive verb from circa nineteen nineteen to scurry like a beetle as editors Beatles around the office and now we have the third form of beetle. It is an adjective from the fourteenth century being permanent and overhanging as in. Oh I think I skipped a couple of lines. Let's try that again. The third form of beetle is a noun from before the twelfth century. One a heavy wooden hammering or ramming instrument number two a wooden pestle or bat for domestic tasks. This is from middle English battelle from old English battelle akin to the old English baton which means to beat. Now we have the fourth form of beetle. This was the one that I started to read accidentally. It is an adjective from fourteenth century being prominent and overhanging as in beetle brows. Whoa so if you've got like really Oh. So Eugene Levy would. His eyebrows considered beetle brows because they look like Beatles. I don't know that they don't at all This is from Middle English. Bittel browde which means having overhanging brows probably from battle orbital which means beetle and now we have the fifth form of beetle it is an in transitive verb man. I screwed that whole thing up I went. I bounced around all these different forms of Beatles. All right this is an transitive. Verb from sixteen to the synonyms are project. Or is it project? No I think it's project and Jut J. U. T. As in to scale the beat aline crags and that is a quote from R L Stevenson enough. Oh I wanted to say about the word beetle. The band the Beatles you may have noticed they don't spell it like the insect beetle. They actually spelled B. E. A. T. L. E. If I'm remembering correctly the story is that John Lennon saw in a dream that their band name would be the Beatles with an A. I don't know how true that is. I could be messing it up but anyway. That's the that's the story all right now. We have beat leafhopper. Two words leafhopper is one word. It is a noun from nineteen o six. A leaf hopper. That transmits transmits YEP transmits curly top. Virus to sugar beets and other garden plants and the scientific name for this leafhopper is circle liver. Tennis NEXT IS B. Tree. Two words noun from seventeen seventy three a hollow tree in which honey bees nest next is beat. Route One word. Noun from fifteen seventy nine it is chiefly British and it means a beat grown for its edible usually red route. Also the route so the route has just called. Beetroot next is B. B. E. E. V. E. S. And this is just the plural of the word beef which we read a couple of episodes ago now is be yard one word. Noun from the fifteenth century. And we just have the synonym APIARY IN. Apiary is a B. Yard. Next is the abbreviation bath. B E F or beef. And it's just an abbreviation for the word before. Now we have B E F again but this one is all caps it is an abbreviation for British Expeditionary Force Expeditionary Force. Yeah next is befall. It is a verb from the thirteenth century. I is transitive to happen. Especially as if by fate and then they transitive definition says to happen to as in the fate that befell them. That would be the past tense. Form Befell Now. We have be fit. It is a verb from the fifteenth century only We just have one transitive definition to be proper or becoming too as in clothing that befits the occasion. I'd like to wear clothes that do not fit the occasion. No that's not true. I'm a little bit too embarrassed to do that but in my mind. I want to do things like that. I want to wear a Tux to a fast food restaurant. If I were to actually go to fast food restaurants but I feel I would be embarrassed. Okay next is befitting. It is an adjective from circa sixteen. Twelve number one we just have the synonyms. Suitable and appropriate number. Two synonyms are proper and decent. Befitting Lee is an adverb. Next is befogged. It is a verb from sixteen. O One we have two transitive definitions. The first one just has the synonym confused. And then the second one has the synonyms fog and obscure next is Ba- fool. It's the word fool with A. B. E. at the front it is a transitive verb from the fourteenth century. One to make a fool of and then number two we have the number one definition for the word delude. I often be fool myself. All Right now. We have the last word of this episode. We are going to do to forms. The word is before B. E. F. O. R. E. and then the third form will be in the next episode. So I form. It is an adverb or an adjective from before the twelfth century number one in advance and then a synonym is ahead as in marching on before marching on before and then number two at an earlier time as in the night before also as in knew her before. And let's see. The entomology isn't terribly interesting so we're going to move onto the second form of before. It is a preposition from before the twelfth century. One a one forward of or in front of as in stood before the fire won a two in the presence of as in speaking before the conference one be under the jurisdiction or consideration of as in the case before the court one see one at the disposal of as in the great sums placed before Him One C. To in store for as in got the whole summer before you. Oh isn't that great when you're a kid when you're an adult and you have a job you don't get a summer usually unless you're a teacher or something number two preceding in time earlier than as in just before noon a- well that would be one fifty nine no eleven fifty nine. I'm so stupid number. Three in a higher or more important position than as in put quantity before quality I think I would prefer to do it the other way around and I hope you will do to. What is the word of the episode? I think we are going to pick the word that is the one called beet armyworm just because I think that's kind of a funny phrase a funny mixture of words together a right. That is it for this episode. I appreciate you joining me during this quarantine. I hope that you are all doing well. And you are staying clean and washing hands and at this point wearing masks if you go outside or go to a store especially you really should be wearing a mask. It should be prepared correctly and there should be no space between the mask in your skin. And you know it's with his life is weird right now. All right I'M GONNA end this episode. This has been Spencer dispensing information into your brain. Thank you ain't goodbye..

"Kong. I'm Bryan Curtis and in Singapore on Juliette folly we just had Japan, April export import numbers coming through, and of course, markets in Japan South Korea strategy up. Let's get all the latest with Bloomberg's Doug krizner, dug a bit of a mixed picture here. Juliet on the export side a decline of two point four percent for the month of April. That is year over year. It makes for the fifth straight drop, and it's much worse than the market forecast of one point six percent in terms of a decline on the import side, though, a different story again in the month of April of six point four percent, which was above estimates. And then when it comes to core machine orders for the month of March an increase of three point eight percent that's month over month, which was much stronger than forecast, but a weakness right now, and the Japanese yen vis-a-vis, the dollar here at one ten fifty five, and we see the Nikkei two twenty five higher by a half of one percent, barren mind today in the US. We had an update for the equity market. The Dow gaining about eight tenths of one percent, s&p five hundred nine tenths of one percent, higher and the NASDAQ composite jumped nearly one point one percent. Overall, the rebound was being tied to the US granting limited relief to those American telecom. Carriers doing business with way right now in Seoul, the kospi better by a half of one percent. We have Serena Joe who's an economist and Mark read fixed income analyst from Zuo securities double header coming up here at about eight minutes past the hour. Well, let's get into the teeth of, of some of these stories here. China's ambassador to the US telling Fox News today that the door is still open for trade talks with the United States. In the meantime, moments ago, we spoke with Saint Louis said president James Bullard about the US China trade war, and he told us, it's too early to talk about cutting interest rates because he dragged tariffs are putting on the US economy, it would be inappropriate for the fed to move at this stage. When the deal might be right around the corner. He might you know, you make a move, and then all of a sudden two days later, there's, there's a deal and things are going in the other direction and very positive. I think they probably would be very positive if there was a deal. So I think we have to be patient. We have to wait and see how this evolves. I would float the idea that you'd have to have these tariffs at the higher levels in place for six months. And then at that point, you make an assessment for monetary policy. Jim Bullard live on Bloomberg radio. Just here in the last thirty minutes or so. He also told us that interest rates are in a good place right now. And we've been talking a lot, of course about the US ban on the way there is a story up on the Bloomberg terminal right now, saying that Trump administration put off punishing way until China trade Tokes stoled. Bloomberg's Nick Wadham says the discovery is very telling question really hit always been whether the two were connected and how much they were connected and whether the president would be willing to use hallway as leverage to get what he wanted in the trade war, and what we found out and reported on today suggests that there was a very strong link. Interestingly some hotline is in the US, and now said to be worried that if progress on trade Tokes, the Trump administration could backtrack on the hallway, Ben meantime, US, farmers hurt, by the trade war are about to get more aid. We're hearing, the President Trump is preparing to announce new round of money for them as early as Thursday. Limburg's Mike Dorning, says the move will help President Trump with his base. This is clearly something that will help the Trump administration. With farm population. That was growing very frustrated with the toilet a trade war. Here's package could exceed fifteen billion dollars. They got twelve billion last year. Well, I was African swan fever and damage to China's pig hoods now the country is warning it's three hundred million farmers to for a new crop Asian pissed. We get more from Bloomberg's Yvonne man. China's ministry says the voracious fall armyworm is likely to spread through China's northern corn growing areas after being detected in thirteen provinces as of may tenth and it's calling on farmers to secure the harvest by snatching food from the worms mouths. The past spreading in Asia after spreading from the Americas in two thousand sixteen. It can't destroy corn rice, wheat sugarcane cotton. And soybeans experts say this is a different kind of armyworm than previous infestations in China. In Hong Kong. I'm Yvonne man Bloomberg daybreak Asia. Well China's on bunk insurance. Ground up they were in the very first people to carry their. Profile that they also have their own winner eiser their southwest fertilizer. Brand of fertilizers they carry all the fertilizers I talk about they are very helpful they are a go to source for all your garden questions answered if I, can't get them answered and you need to take some. Take something to get a pair is on southwest, fertilizer is the place check out the website south west fertilizer. Dot com or yard geek dot com Check out of their articles all their guys good stuff. But when you need to get in. To get just about anything and everything I've talked about from as. To winner risers to pre emergent herbicides today and we're going to. Get into talking a little bit about insect controls especially on the lawn this is the place to go shop corner Bissonnette Renwick been there since nineteen fifty five, it's worth the trip no matter where you're coming from What. Else do I need to talk to you. About real quick before we get back to I'm in And That's. Good We'll just. Move on Hi so to tell, in the last hour I'm in put in new sod last year and immediately got overwhelmed with, he thinks army worms but whether it's, armyworm Saad, web worms cut worms we control them. All the same way what I wanted to emphasize though, is, since we haven't Joey we have not gotten one, call with people saying I'm seeing the moths in the yard right now at this. Time, of the, year no we haven't and I'm I'm not trying to jinx us if it was going to be, a problem this year we should have already since that and. Gotten word. On that I'm hopeful our hope was was the history. Of sod web worms and even things like armyworm. Is that they're cyclical they. Don't come every year they usually do a major outbreak once every, eight or nine years Good. Thing we got a two years in a row though, in, two thousand sixteen in two thousand seventeen unfortunately and, it scared us that it was going to be a permanent thing the fact that. We, are not, gotten any, calls on it this year that's a good sign and that can make that application to, armyworm as well if you wanna put out any kind of. Preventative I'm. Okay with that I don't normally recommend putting out insecticide. Just to put out insecticides I have more what. We call an integrated pest. Management philosophy IPM strategy where if we're going to do a preventative Make sure we're investing correctly in that if you, wanna put out a granular insecticide as a prophylactic treatment Okay I don't think you need to though okay I'd rather you save the money we do it when we see our. First telltale sign of any kind of this damage but normally I would tell you. Not to put out any kind of preventative insecticide, but if you want to for. Peace of mind you could do that right now then. You. Have to do it again in thirty. Days Okay Gotta, say think about, it ladies and, gentlemen anybody's listen for more than a year. Here Last, year prior to. Harvey and even after Harvey we. Were talking Saad worms two years ago August and, September we were talking, Saad wet worms. We got, to a point, where it was, we we had to say I don't know Even Joey Griffin the he was new to the job maybe just a couple of months into. The job and he was like me he's like do we have to take another Saad web worm question, it that it was that prevalent of a problem year ago and. Was a year prior to even Joey taken on garden line so we know about. Sod worms that the, fact that we haven't heard word one about it this year it kind of serves to my thought process that they are cyclical we, just happened to get it, two years in, a row which. Is not normal we agree with. That but I don't think it's going to be. That big of a, problem this year Okay good So what are you? Gonna do are you gonna put it. Down, anyway I kind of feel people out on that and see whether they're going to do it no matter what I said because some people. Just don't ever want to see Saad worms. Again and I get that let's. Handled on a case by case basis I have, no problem with. You, call me, even if you call me and say I'm seeing loss well right now that'd. Be the exception to the rule? Brian's in tarkenton up next morning Brian Are, you there you're. Sounded, really funky I like it was like you were talking three feet away from the, phone Yeah I guess I had a bad signal okay what's up Just talking about staying Bob they send? Overrun my garden anything. I, can do organically to. Combat, them not with the spray yes there's. A. Cultural practice And a tool or two. That you can do and. You can say that it's, all organic the cultural practices and I always, preface this by saying. This, is not a joke You get a shop vac portable, shop back a something you can take out in the garden even if you have to, run it on a electrical cord out there and every morning. For a couple of weeks you get out, there and you. Just vacuum off all the stink bugs, from the plant specially tomatoes And then you can basically kill them with an insecticide inside that, container most in Burnham if you want to like we're talking about the the web worms, earlier today People used to that's how they used to control bugs like put them in Mason jar and put lighter fluid in there in Burnham There is not a. Spray that you. Can spray on stink bugs because they're, Exo skeleton router protection is keeps insecticides from being a killing agent on them So then, they keep producing and reproducing and you've got it thanks so by doing the. Shop back on the backside Elise where you. See them and maybe their eggs then you're getting that and now definitely don't want. To let them fly out you're. Gonna find a way to. Control them if that means pouring liquid soap in there and killing what you shop backed. Out there are bait stations right there they make these Bates stations Also the last. Thing you can do is spray natural things like garlic garlic oil to deter them. They don't like the smell of. Garlic it keeps them away Mint. Oils keep them away If you can sprinkle diatomaceous earth around, the base of every plant if they, come in contact with that. D-. That will kill them, all these are, orgasmic methods though Okay, so I just I I've been using, damages Eric I don't know if. It's been affective or not Any, time. It rains you have to reapply the d. yes Does that something that caught your attention Yeah because yeah every time. I apply then it's going to rain Right after that and that's that's the. Tough thing with. D., but you, can deter them was, smelly stuff garlic spray meant Pray that directly on the plant and especially around the base of the, plants but you can spray all. These things, on the leaves of the plant to pay data and then seriously car vacuum. Horrible car vacuum Suck them all up you'd go out there every morning for a week you, will get control Okay yes definitely Okay I always preface it by, saying I'm not telling a joke when everybody visualizes themselves out there with a portable shop, vac you start to, giggle can't help. It, hey Robert, Matagorda hang. Tight you will be the next caller, up but we're up against the clock quarter past the. Hour we ought to take a break and we'll be back with more guard line calls very shortly last. Weekend I emphasized that if. You can't get to at, tree farm at least go online, I love their website. Because they had these videos and, these animations that can show you that if you'll just hire Vert and tree farm you, can transform a landscape, with palm trees. In, no time, then it's. Not just palm trees they do trees, they do big shrubs and we did this little test. Last week with Joey he knows the answers now so I can't do the test but they have these These packages like instant gratification package pricing that. We've never brought up before last week that, I think are phenomenal. The amount the amount of plant.

"Can remember the. First time a hair debate South Korea's spy cameras it was just after arriving in Seoul and I was here alongside the river, hand on a bike ride with a friend when I was running. To public league She shouted check it doesn't have a camera in it Turn. Vein and laughed. But I could. See from her face she wasn't kidding The, country is, in the grip of what's being described as a spy camera epidemic hidden cameras capture women and sometimes men, on dressing going to. The bathroom or even in changing rooms and clothing stores, gyms and swimming pools the videos are. Then posted online When I first saw the chat room, I was shocked my mind went blank and I. Started crying Kim not her real name was secretly filmed in a restaurant by men, she thought, were her friends the even took fitted up her skirt under the table she did report it to the, police but that just. Left are feeling even more vulnerable Costs all patricide. Costs on that. I felt lonely as if the man were looking, at me like I was a piece of meat a sexual object. I was a frightened I. Was afraid of being blamed I was afraid of my. Family friends and people around me would, look at me as these men looked at me Thousands of South Korean women feel that not enough is being done They've held huge protests on the streets. Of Seoul demanding better treatment for victims and tougher penalties for criminals But catching those responsible is proving problematic Special teams, in Seoul have examined thousands of bathrooms. But failed to find a single camera RT went with park while me as she looked for any holes in the. Wall where cameras might have been pleased you get rid of 'em learning how. Difficult it is to catch these criminals the men in install the camera. And take it. Down within fifteen minutes arrests are made but sex crimes prosecutor told the BBC that she felt the punishments were not severe enough as very few. Of those caught are sent to prison Thousands of. Women are once. Again ready to take to the streets to cry my life is not your poor and it will be the fourth such crew tests this year They believe it will take harsher. Punishments higher prosecution rates and better, methods of detecting this crime to tackle the. Rising problem until then we will, all be checking our changing rooms in case we're being watched Laura bicker reporting from South Korea Most farmers around the world welcome a. Few worms in that crop, fields they're good for the soil but the presence of the fall armyworm is seriously bad news for farmers and potentially. Everyone else because of, the destruction they, caused this week the fall armyworm which is actually a Caterpillar has been found in India for the. First time for all the details I've been speaking to Dr Regan early who's a biologist specializing in species invasion at the university. Of Exeter in south western England I. Will. So bad about the fall armyworm the devastating impact of the full armyworm is because it eats the crops that many people around the world need to. Survive and to sell for money it has very large outbreaks in, maize and in some other cereals. But it's favorite food is May's so in Ghana. And Zambia surveys have been done it looks like maize losses are somewhere between Twenty and fifty percent of the annual yield and that scales up two losses of millions of dollars for some of the poorest countries in the world it's called a full? Armyworm. But I understand it's a little bit more like a Caterpillar and it originates from. South America doesn't it that's right it's called a one because the caterpillars. Seemed to move a little, bit like worms perhaps but it is actually a moth that lays eggs that grows into caterpillars and it's the caterpillars. That eat crops maize, and sugar cane, and other cereals inside America we think it was introduced into Africa by a passenger aeroplane in two. Thousand sixteen but once in Africa right able to fly so quickly that it seemed to call an is most of the continent. Below the Sahara desert within the space. Of. Just every a year wow that's terrifying but when when you say it was introduced accident managed to hitch a ride with a tourist or somebody who. Is who is traveling and they may have taken some eggs or, a moth or something with them. Accidentally exactly it's because of the kind of trade. And transport to the area of west Africa Where it was introduced we suspect that a female moth onto an aeroplane. And then? Flew off. At the other end okay so this week the news line with this creature is that, it's a ride in India we think what evidence of we got for that it's very certainly inundate it's been confirmed with molecular evidence it's arrived in. Some maize, fields near Bangalore in south India and they've got by visual identification molecular identification and, it's reached infestation levels, of seventy percent and the maize fields that neither climate throughout south India and East India that's Tamil Nadu Andhra Pradesh is absolutely perfect for these outbreaks to reach. Really, really high. Numbers is there any way that this can be killed or at least reduced in its numbers how how do we go about that things that people in Africa and India can do is something called push coal agriculture? Where. They can put a plant that is repellents to the insect perhaps because it produces A chemical that the insects don't like and that will stop the insects laying the. Eggs in the, Masefield farmers, can also plants grasses surrounding the edges. Of the Masefield that will attract the insects and things like that likely to be much more. Useful. For these small, scale agricultural farmers than chemical pesticides because the pesticides just too expensive the. People to be able to buy and in fact. They're often, unregulated and. So they can be very dangerous. To human health does it have a natural predator this Caterpillar, might be lots of other insects that eat, them all a diseases that attack them in their home weather from but once they move abroad they escape from what. We call those natural enemies and so that's one reason why they're able to, outbreak to these. Huge numbers is because they don't have very many natural enemies and then you range it's? One of the problems that is really? Highest up on the agenda of African agriculture lists at the moment unless the suspect that the same will be true of India and of course from India it's perfectly likely That will be able to fly all three Bangladesh Burma and invade southeast Asia China possibly even Austrailia and there's also the possibility that might be able to get to Europe so does Europe, still stand a, chance to keep it out then with some sort of. Preventative measures if, the mouth is able to get to North Africa or if it's able. To fly up through the Nile? Valley into Egypt then it's it's really a short hop for mafia can fly three hundred kilometers in the night to get. Into Europe so if it, does make it to North Africa then it's really. Going to be impossible to keep it out of Europe Dr Regan early that no as we were talking the press conference in Zimbabwe has started the. Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa says the governing Zanu PF party panicked and used violence because it was defeated in the election these are his words and we'll have more on this. "I i guess i could if i'm not going to water because i i think it's your responsible of you know i wind up watering once a week is what i and i water by hand in were only talking about my front yard and i water the areas that are in full song and my front yard is kind of mostly in shade but there are parts of it that are in full son and it's just very droughted out so i will go out in water it by hand especially in those areas alwasta areas just before dark by the way i should get up at five thirty in the morning and do it but i don't get up at five thirty in the morning because the mold of but i get out there and i water deep by and i do a good job of it but i only do it once a week and i have tell you it has been so hot that when i in a within like three days each the grass is all folded together so i'm hoping that are rainy season will start a usually starch and june where we have every afternoon rains and when that happens then i'm going to plant the backyard which i have been avoiding sitting out the garages is my bermuda seed waiting but i have not planet it because i'm not you know it needs water every day from waiting for the rainy season to get that done so that is just how that works are that being said i did get an email this week about from someone and believe it or not and wisconsin who tells me that they think they have army worms because they're seeing worms crawling across the grass during the day while that sounds like army worms to me in her they're eating the grass how'd you get rid of them each real simple i use beck silvestre gestures water brand names dyctel thorough side all natural kind of stuff and put it in always in sprayer spray it just towards the evening worms will come out you'll go eat it and then they will all die so that's how you get rhythm or you can have a little bit of patience because armyworm she can move on to the next yard if you know what i mean this was asked the garden geek i'm michael bros.
