"We told you yesterday about Microsoft's new AI chat bot search engine. Today we ask how well does it work? Washington Post tech columnist Jeffrey Fowler has tried it out. He spoke with northwest news radios, Jeff Poe Gillette. First off, for those who don't know, what exactly is a chatbot? Heard some of the buzz in the last couple of months about these artificial intelligence programs that have the ability to write in English. That sounds like it maybe came from a human. You can ask it all kinds of questions. Kind of an essay about it. And so the race has been on to figure out who can integrate this artificial intelligence technology into searches so that you can maybe investigate things that are a little more complicated than you can normally get the answer to just by looking at you a whole world of links to other websites. So how reliable and accurate are these chat bots? So yesterday, Microsoft announced that they made a deal with the company behind one of the most buzzy of these. It's called OpenAI, and their system is called chat GPT. They have integrated it into a new version of its Bing search engine. So the idea is that when you go to the big box they're huge instead of just typing find a television, you can type a whole sentence. I'd like a television that is has large screen, doesn't cost very much and put in a whole bunch of other things. And it will do the work, the artificial intelligence will do the work for you. When I tested this at the Microsoft event yesterday, it was useful in some senses and not so useful in others. One problem is that the chatbot is really wordy. And so as an assistant, it oftentimes would give paragraphs and paragraphs and paragraphs of the answers, the things that I really want to just kind of a one word answer. What is the best television that costs under $250? For example. So that was one problem. Another challenge that came up is this artificial intelligence technology has a little bit of a problem with sometimes kind of making up its own answers. It can kind of just start to imagine things that maybe don't really even exist. And that's going to be really worrisome, I think, for people when they're searching for things, can they really trust whether what they're seeing is true? Well, certainly misinformation and disinformation has been a problem generated by human beings over the last several years, but now generated by AI in fact, you write about this AI creating a conspiracy with Tom Hanks and Watergate what's going on there. Yes, as part of the test, I just wanted to see could I lead the AI into believing something that isn't true. And unfortunately, I was able to do that with big. So I said, I asked the chatbot. What role did Tom Hanks play in in the Watergate controversy and its response was, initially, Tom Hanks played no role in it, but then it kept going. And then it started to imagine that there was some conspiracy theory out there that Tom Hanks had played a role in Watergate and it went on about how where this conspiracy came from and how it had been debunked by outlets, including my own Washington Post, I was just like, where on earth did all of this come from? And this is one of the known challenges with this technology. It has the sort of three style and can imagine things that don't necessarily be exist. So definitely it's one of the issues that they're going to have to work on as they try to get people to trust this as opposed to getting answers. So it's not really ready for prime time just yet. I would say they've got to look ahead of them. Folks want to try this right now. You have to sign up for a special beta program for Microsoft to go to Bing dot com slash new. Sign up for it with your Microsoft account and will also only work for right now in your in the Microsoft Edge web browser. That said, this kind of technology is definitely coming to everyone. Lawyers for Alec Baldwin are hoping to disqualify the special prosecutor from the fatal shooting case on the rust set in New Mexico. Liz Warner reports in a new filing this week, Baldwin's attorneys argue special prosecutor Andrea reeb shouldn't be overseeing the case because she was also elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives in November. They contend this is unconstitutional under New Mexico law because she's also a state lawmaker, which would represent a separation of powers violation. In January, reeb told CNN her prosecutorial decisions were not impacted by politics, Baldwin was recently charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2021 shooting death of rust cinematographer halyna Hutchins. "Stated, is it was Germantown. It was the German town of and again, for our national audience, Germantown is an affluent community, another affluent suburb here in the city. So you're right. I mean, and it's all cyclical. We saw that in Brooklyn, New York when I lived in Brooklyn. There were 11, $12 million brownstones that just backed 20 years ago was a drug infested neighborhood, so that sort of happens. I'm curious though, pastor for your journey, though. Were you always a conservative, were you always a Republican? How did you get to that point in your life? I've always been conservative. I mean, from day one, early on, I didn't. I wasn't really dealing with parties at that time. When I graduated from high school, I attended Christian brothers university in political science. And so I wanted to learn about my country. I wanted to learn about politics. I had a chance when I was 18. I had a chance to go to this program called a youth legislature. I went to Washington for the close up program, where we actually wrote bills on the floor, which was an awesome program. And so I kind of shaped who I am. I'm a person of platform and the platform that I lean closest to is the Republican platform because again, first of all, they believe in the Bible. That core group. And so I can't stand on a stump and talk about what I believe and talk about integrity when the group that I'm standing for is not a staunch believer in the Bible. And of course, you've had a pretty colorful career. A school teacher tell us about some of your background real quick. Well, I think my first job was at FedEx. I worked for FedEx for about ten years. Everybody remembers for so fast. Yeah, I worked there for about ten years after that. I got full of the corporate life. And I started teaching school adult basic education. I taught at the jail, I taught at the federal prison camp. And so I was teaching adult basic education and then after that I moved in and I taught at Southwest Tennessee southwest Tennessee community college and then most recently I taught at Arkansas state university. And of course, you're a pastor as well. For 25 years. All those other jobs, there were my part time jobs. The full-time job is the pastoring. I love it. How did we do this? How do we get more minorities into the Republican Party? You're going to have a big job because your campaigning for office, there are a number of Democrats that are running. How do you convince people to join the Republican cause? Well, again, Todd, when people understand what being conservative is all about. They begin to see themselves. You can't go by rhetoric. And I think that's the reason many African Americans are just pinned to the Democratic Party because they never sat down and thought about what conservatism really is. And when you look at conservatism, when you look at we talk about the Bible, we talk about strong families and we're dealing with strong, strong government, but not overwhelming government. When I look at Tennessee, I believe it's the third best state in relation to physical conservatism in relation to our finances. That means something. And so we got that through these conservative mores and values and that makes us who we are today in Tennessee. And I have to imagine, especially in whitehaven, where you have a lot of black business owners. I mean, these are small businesses owned by black Americans. You've got a families that want the same thing as the white families and the white suburbs. They want to be able to let their kids go to a great school, get a great education, be able to go and play on the playgrounds and not have to worry about getting shot at. And that's the truth. And those are basic, those are just basic things that we want. And so, you know, it's kind of getting out of hand right now because of a lack of leadership in that area. And so I want to bring that leadership back. I have a vested interest. I have a heart for it. And it's time out for people kicking the can down the road. I'm tired of people saying, you know, by 20, 28 will have this fixed. No, we need to get this fixed right now. And so I think that's we've played kick the can long enough. It's time to pick the can up and put it in the trash. I love it. Before we go to break pastor tappin, who, by the way, Fred tappen, for those of you listening to us on kwa. He host a weekend show, he's also running for the state Senate. And he would like your vote. And he has my full endorsement. I think his he's got a great platform, a great story, and we need to support candidates. What exactly does that mean. Well we are barbecue restaurant that became a media company for thirteen years. We've been running a barbecue business out of a very difficult location in san diego but because of the smartphone because of all these different apps that have been created we've been able to share our story with so many different small business owners other people that are doing an incredible things in the barbecue world. Other people that are doing things podcasting and other people creating content and sharing stories about their business on all these different apps so every single week. We'd like to bring on people that we are in that inspire us people that we admire. And if you listen to this show you know that we care a lot about branding. We talk about kelly. Barbecue kelly barbecue media digital hospitality typically. I'm wearing a kelly barbecue media hat. But today i have an old hickory pits hat so the only reason i do that is because today we have a very special guest and it is the founder of all hickory It is david b night. He has a barbecue hall of famer. He has been in the barbecue. Business since nineteen seventy four supporting barbecue restaurant owners caterers pitmasters culinary schools all over the globe. They've built an incredible business. And i had the fortune of going with my wife receipts a and gene Back in two thousand sixteen. We actually went out to cape girardeau. We got to shake hands with david. We got to meet his team. Luke gave us a tour of the old facility with the original old hickory factory. Which i believe is still working but then we also got to see the new facility that they were building out because their business was booming and anybody that's been in business for forty seven years has a wealth of knowledge so we can't wait to To ask him questions so that you guys can learn and hopefully implement some of the things that he's learned to grow his business into your david. Welcome to the show. Thank you so much this great here. We since nineteen seventy four cape girardeau. Can you bring us back to the original restaurant that started started. The company certainly again. It's a the original. Restaurant is a historic building built about. Oh fifty years ago and it's right on the mississippi river because of that Since the time the building built a huge concrete floodwall was built in so the restaurant is situated right between the big opening in the concrete wall. And there's another a block away that so that the people can actually walk out on the riverfront and that sort of thing but anyway the building had been abandoned for about twelve years and there is talk about me. Torn out and that that would be a very tragic thing that resource like that historic building. Turn it into a parking lot. And so i've made offer and was able to buy the building and just started from scratch. Rehabbing have had. They'll twos not wiring and no of real plumbing. That would sit good. So we really destructed down sandblasted inside now tech point all the bricks so it was right at quite an undertaking dude. Take this building for the been abandoned for so long to get it up and running but we had started in july and we opened in december. So were you in the real estate business or the restaurant business. When you made the purchase. Neither one point. I was a teacher. Okay perfect so you're a teacher. You decided you didn't have you had enough time. You're three months off that you want. You wanted to get into the restaurant business. Yes that I went to school at arkansas state university and graduated with the mba and got a job teaching marketing and management at jacksonville state university in alabama. Okay and i did that for two years. And i thought well i kind of tried to try. The real world studied business and just to keep talking about. It is not quite as fun as excellent and so be held decide. Yeah a restaurant says first business into a had grown our power you at the time david l. Let's see here empty handed years old. Now let's see Forty seven years ago. And i'm seventy three so you do the math forty seven. Seventy three whatever he So forty seven years ago. Forty seven four okay. Nineteen seventy four. They up and So back in the barbecue is kind of a. Oh that when food cuisine it was on the other in the town or not nearly like it this now but i- grown up at a town of popper bluff. It's about an hour and a half k. Through m best friend His family had barbecue restaurant. I was just fascinated with how far. How far was the barbecue restaurant from where where you opened up our half dry. And so that's where i grew up and but folks moves from up above to near cape gherardo when i moved up to college tape each and They have moved close to date. And i was visiting and i saw this building and i just had one of those eureka moments to make this work. So it's kinda leap of faith. Faith getting into the any business especially the restaurant business but that is one of those stories at as happy yes absolutely. It's really been. Why were you married. Were you married at the time that you know years and years later years and years later. Okay so you get into the restaurant business. Are you doing breakfast lunch and dinner or are you just doing a barbecue. What what was the the initial. It was really lunch and evening meals lunch and evening now and we had a cocktail now onto the bar area and very casual atmosphere kind of one of those places scuttle historic theme to it adding dictators and grabs of the cape dorado area and oh antiques on the wall. We had some old guns that were hanging on the wall of now oh a moose and wild lower and the places got a decorated with a belly stove a lampy adam. Okay so it was kind of you know trying to have something rather than just walk in and tables and chairs sure you wanted to. You wanted to create a hospitality. I mean we're in the you want to create a memorable moment for someone. Tell you memorable moment was opening day of the restaurants helmi. I'd love to you know. This is a little embarrassing usually are in restoration process We had sandblasted the building inside and out and the editor a tall ceiling but it was beautiful. Know for the beat it would a ceiling and that and So we were the the restrooms right across the street not only from the mississippi river but also the burlington northern railroad and so opening night. He's been putting together these really great dettori -als and they're destroying. How great they are. He's actually using them to teach people in his lab. Some cool stuff about by informatics so the kids are gonna be getting some good content out of that requirement for participation in spock's is for each of the five teams to conduct educational outreach and involve k. Through twelve students as part of their experiment. The university of idaho's website provides an example of successful citizen outreach. As citizen science lead. Adrian bryant tells us the team recently completed this portion of the spock's experiment with the help of local elementary students in moscow idaho to swap petri dishes and look at the effectiveness of the bacteria resistant polymers. They plan to test on the space station and so basically our project will be testing. Non fouling polymers in microgravity. And so these. Polymers have been scientifically proven on earth to resist bacteria asian so currently on the i s they have these different solutions that will clean high contact. Surface areas. door handles Counter things like that and so we're thinking that if you can put these non fouling polymers on these high contact. Surface areas can prevent bacteria growth in the first place. We have three of our non polymers that we made end so each student. So there's about two hundred kids that we distributed Was given to of our polymers. A control and so basically once a week they would swap these petri dishes and put a little bit of the nutrient broth on top of it and then allow bacteria to grow a citizen scientists. Working with spock's researchers younger participants are exposed to what it's like to work with real world science and contribute through data analysis. That's really cool. And i really like our citizens ci- because One of the big things we stress is that there is no right answer. There is no known right now for the students in like a lotta times in college like you know you you kind of know where you're going. What the answer is especially in elementary school to It's cool that there is no right answer so they're kind of doing real science So i really like about our project. Associate professor of molecular biology marine dolan. Mentors the team at arkansas state university all sophomores. She's continually impressed by the energy and excitement. Her students bring to their sparks project. This project came from them so it a lot of projects. I know come from existing projects faculty products. This was actually inspired by the students and they had a real passion for the environment. Arkansas state university is working with wax worms to study degradation of polyethylene and space which could also potentially offer insights into how this might benefit humanity and the global ecosystem here on earth. So we're saying these wax terms in his face and we're staying if they're able to Degrades polyethylene are controlled environment. That's land deal. One of the sophomores from arkansas state university spock's team so the biologists are working on creating in or creating a colony and controlling exactly the kind of food they give it to control it so we know exactly. The kind of bacteria growing their stomach. Switzerland space engineering team is working on optimizing trading are pods which are gonna be sent up in. So we're working on doing with the constraints and the different layers of protection. On so these wax worms have been shown on to degrade polyethylene and could potentially be used also out broader impacts here on earth but the idea that to be able to take those onto the space and.
