Officer nearby Destot on the day after Christmas as made his first court appearance. He did not enter a plea and judge has ordered a mental evaluation for Gustavo Ariaca another cool day on the way ahead of the storm. That's expected to bring some rain to the Southland this weekend. And Nancy Pelosi is expected to take the gavel is the Democrats take control of the house today at five thirty five. We're going to be talking with ABC Sherry Preston about how you are going to be so healthy in two thousand nineteen. I can't wait because I just don't think I was healthy in two thousand eighteen at six o five handle on the news animal's going to be talking about the government shutdown. It's into day thirteen the stalemate between the president. And the Democrats big shocker continues right now. Let's check in with author researcher and speaker, Dr Tracy Weiland who specializes on the impact of technology on. Society work and careers. Good morning, Tracy. Oh, good morning and happy new year happy new year. So speaking of their new year, Dr Whalen, tell us what careers are going to be like hot ones in two thousand nineteen. Well, I think the big hot ones are are somewhat. Obvious one is obviously technology whether it's tournaments cars are cybersecurity artificial intelligence and big data. So I think everyone should just look forward to seeing that technology is in all our lives the other area, we look at it healthcare because we're living longer and as a segment our older population. Need a lot of services, and then there might be some regional, right? So cannabis is big and hot and different local areas, and that could be a door opener for a lot of new career job openings can there's a lot of people making a lot of money on right now. Well, there's certainly investment going on in the medical industry and the beverage industry and the tobacco industry. So there's a lot of attention on it right now. So someone could potentially, you know, look at that as a platform for job and career growth. And then on the flip side what jobs are sort of like if you're looking for. Hey, I think I might want to do this. What what do you think people might want to steer clear of? Well, I think what people should start thinking about their own jobs in lives is anything that is a routine that can be replaced by a robot. Or software will probably go away, so pieces of people's jobs will go away. So for example, you remember the Bank teller in in the ATM machine came in and took part of the Bank tellers job. Now, we still have Bank tellers, but they're doing different things when the airline industry had online. Reservations, it took away pieces of the airline clerks jobs, but they moved on to other areas. So I think the. The onus is on us to really watch. What could go away in our own jobs, and then reskill so that we're always relevant, and there's once once you kind of start heading down that slope. There's no way to stop it. Like, I went to I flew over the holidays and an airline who shall remain nameless. Because they don't like it much. I had to put my own tag on my bag. There was a ticket rep sitting there, but they don't even do that. I'm like, boy, you're not even going to be standing there in a year or two. Well, they may not be standing there to do that they might be doing something else. And if you think about the routine items in your job that go away or things that people really don't wanna do anyway because they're pretty tedious our boarding. But yes to your point they might be less personnel on the floor. They might be more self-service. I if another example, the airlines has all the kiosks, and you do a lot of your own activities now unto yes, yes. So, but you know, in some ways, it's very easy. You can do mobile. Check in and have your boarding pass right on your smartphone. And you're like, wow. I remember I used to wait on all those lines. And now, I just use my mobile phone and check in and go straight to the security gates. Okay. Now for people who are maybe a little technologically challenged. I'll put myself in that group. What in and everything's moving toward technology. How do you prepare for that? I mean, some people just are inherently more open adapted or adaptable to technology career, and others just aren't so how do you? How do you? Stay up to speed. Yes. Well, it's a good thing. I think people learned technology if they find a use for it. So for example, I'm going to guess that you probably have a smartphone of some kind. I do you do so somehow or another you found us for that value in it. And you're probably using it a lot you might be on social media because perhaps you found value in that in your job. So encourage people to look at to technologies that they're going to use and find value in their jobs. So if you're in manufacturing look at robotics three d printing artificial intelligence smart machines, if you're in the media, look at streaming video and social media digital marketing, perhaps look at your job and say, what is it technology? That's in my world that if I use it I actually see benefit of it. And you probably will learn it faster and actually see the benefits of it. Because you don't it in it. Exactly. And then you'll use it more and technology is just like a language. The more you use it the more you get used to it. You probably will remember when you got your first smartphone. And then maybe you had to get a new one and how much easier it was to transition into the new one because you're already learn the language of how to use the phone yet. Remember when you used to text with numbers? You have to go. Okay. I'm gonna say, hi, let's see h okay. And you have to hit the buttons numerous times kids. You don't remember that? But it was one of the first smartphones. I guess or maybe it was just a pre smartphone. So the other thing that I think is really interesting is how traditional jobs are changing too. So like as opposed to a nine to five job, we sit in the office all day. What are how is that changing? Yes. So, you know, companies are changing, and I think that's the big confusion that people are trying to understand what's going on companies used to be very predictable. They rehire critical. You went into a firm. You knew that you were individual contributor did your job. Well, what you manager told you? He wouldn't be up the chain today companies are saying that's not competitive anymore. We have to figure out how to flatten ourselves be more flexible move people around so that they're highly skilled and individuals are saying, well, then how do I plan my career because that's not that's not how it used to be and HR directors and executives are really saying. I have to think about how to. Onboard people have them understand how to really manage their own jobs. I call it become the CEO of your own job. So that you can start to maneuver yourself through the firm and really gain skills and experience that you need to grow. And what's your what's your best advice for success? So because you know, like, you said you got to find something that you are interested in as things change. So you don't like age yourself out of the workforce when you're thirty five. Right. So there's two points. I would have one is always you a plan right since we are living longer a lot of people will be working well into their eighties. So what you're doing in your twenties and thirties and forties will impact position yourself or your sixty seventies and eighties. So that's number one and start to think about that. So what do you do? I always say think about what you like to do that you do. Well, but well enough to get paid or promoted for something that you can carry with you for the long haul. A lot of people are been instructed to find their. Passion. The passion doesn't always get you revenue and help you sustain yourself for the long haul or prepare you for the future. So rather just look at what are your special skills? And do you have any scare skills that really couldn't really help you create a revenue stream for yourself? Because at the end of the day, we are responsible for ourselves, and we really need to think about how to plan our own personal work journeys. Okay. Now, I got one for you too. So that you know, there's there's people heading into the workforce for the first time. And then there's people who are, you know, hidden like forty and they go, you know, what I wanted. I wanted to change or there's people who were hitting fifty and they're saying I'm losing my job because they're bringing in younger people. They're making less money that kind of stuff so how as people hit their forties and fifties how do they find a way to stay relevant? So they're not replaced by someone younger and more inexperienced to makes less, right? So there's there's an ever bowl that a lot of people have been transitioned out of firms because younger. People are more tech savvy or they're cheaper labor for whatever reason. So my colleagues who who are working in their fifty sixty seventies and eighties. Have all seemed to have the same pieces of advice. Look for organizations that have people in your age range age appropriate work locations in an organization, so for example, public sector the government education, universities the arts, nonprofits, consulting private equity healthcare boards franchises. Right. So there's a lot of ways that you can really recast your skills and think about how you going to really journey as you get older and manage your career in that direction. It would be not smart for someone probably in their fifties. And sixties to look at startups because the whole pace and environment of a startup is going to be radically different in the same way. A young person. Would not be seasoned enough to be a season consultant in perhaps marketing or finance because they don't have enough of the background. So I think you have to start to look at where where can I insert myself into the workforce, it makes sense to me age. Okay. Super Dr Tracy while in a pleasure talking to you your new book career confusion twenty-first century career management in a disrupted world a long title. Thank you very much. Yes. Yes. That's what they do with academic books. Lots of stuff to cover. The thank you so much, Dr Weil and have a great day. Thank you. Okay. Interesting. Interesting something to think for for twenty nineteen when we come back. "In for the great one Marco van. We'll be back with you on Monday. I gotta get it. Look, I know we've been talking about Mitt Romney and enough of of Romney. I'm done with him. He's he's I've got other. I have real other issues to deal with I've dealt with him tonight. And I want to get something that's not been covered. Remember, many of you may have missed this story one because it was under reported into the holidays the day after Christmas on the twenty six. There's incredible story that came out of California. And it was a story about the American dream. Story about an individual that came to this country legally. It was a story about an individual that came to this country the league one right way. And then decided that he loved this country so much that he wanted to protect and defend it. And was willing to put his life on the line to do it to protect you. And I this is not someone born here. This is someone who wanted to become an American and ended up becoming an American. He became a police officer. And this police officer did something that was incredible. He went out there, and he protected people in California, a sanctuary state. He works in area that was considered a sanctuary city. And this police officer in California who legally immigrated to America. Was shot and killed the day after Christmas in a routine traffic, stop gone wrong. The worst part is that the man who murdered him was actually in this country illegally. His police chief said. That these crimes are able to happen due to sanctuary city laws in an open border in California. This story has not been told the way that it should be told the story has been told as an American icon gets shot by somebody in fact, MSNBC and some other news outlets their coverage didn't even tell the most important part of the story, which is the person who killed this legal immigrant who became one of the best of us who became a police officer to protect us was killed by somebody that was here legally, and they completely admitted it from their stories. Christmas is a time. When families come together Christmas is a time when people get days off of work law enforcement officers don't get a day off work. They're still out there working risking their lives to keep us safe. That's exactly what this Thirty-three-year-old California, corporal, Ronald Singh. He's a husband and a father who immigrated to America legally from Fiji was doing when he was shot and killed he stopped a suspect. He thought was driving drunk driving. That suspect the illegal alien decided. Oh, yeah. I'll just kill a cop. There was a fifty five hour manhunt. Thirty two year old Gustavo Perez. Ariaca was arrested. Shocker while fleeing to Mexico. Now during the manhunt, the only thing that got this national attention was the fact that President Trump tweeted, and I'm quoting there is now a full-scale manhunt going on in California an illegal immigrant accused of shooting and killing a police officer during a traffic stop. Time to get tough on border security and build the wall. Now, the police officers boss, the sheriff, Adam christianson called this senseless act violence and pointed out the difference between a man who broke the law to come to America illegally. And the man who came to America legally to help uphold the laws. He said, quote, unlike Ron who immigrated this country lawfully and legally to pursue his lifelong career of public safety public service and being a police officer. This suspect is in our country illegally. He doesn't belong here. He's a criminal. We will find him we will arrest him. And we will bring him to Justice. Now, I'm gonna play for you in a few minutes. What christianson had to say? He was actually the police. She was on Fox News channel where he talked about officer saying as a shining example of American immigration, and this is exactly the type of immigration that I've been favor of. I have no problem with anyone that wants to come this country, the right way, the legal way you look at this individual. He came to America. He did it the right way came from Fiji. He wanted to be an American became an American and he wanted to protect Americans, and he became a police officer, and it cost him his life all at the hands of an illegal immigrant. This police chief is spot on because he brought the clear distinction between one officer the officer who is in this country legally who did it the right way who came here to service community who won respected our laws and then wanted to uphold our laws this police officer didn't think of the American laws run fair towards immigrants. He thought they were fair, and he did it the right way. And he came to this country any played by our rules. And then he said this country, so great I'm willing to risk my life to protect enforce these laws. And this police chief is in California, clearly frustrated with the political ization of a national security issue this out for a state to become. A sanctuary state in a sanctuary city where he has to work, and it cost the life of one of his officers. Now, Christian centers police chief went on to show his support for agents working to protect the border saying at the end of his interview did he shared his his frustration that his home state of California's a sanctuary state? I mean, God bless this, man. Now, the Democratic Party. They were asked about this. They were asked about on Sunday morning. And democratic Representative. Was asked about this issue democratic Representative Jeffries. Hi, came Jeffries was asked about the fact that they police officer who came to this country, the legal way who came to this country, and and love this country, and and love the laws of this country and loved so much. He was willing to protect and defend all of us and protect the laws. Landon stand up for the laws of the land. Was killed by someone who didn't respect our laws. He didn't care about our laws and didn't care about the life of this police officer, and this this this congressman. Is on TV and he's asked about on ABC this week. And I want you to just hear how sick of a response. How lack of empathy how lack of compassion there is from from this democratic congressman because he doesn't care that this police officers killed. He cares about illegal immigrants becoming his future voters. Listen to this. But I want to ask you first about the killing of a young California police officer ROY nail saying the suspect is an undocumented immigrant. This is what the sheriff said leading the investigation. He said California's sanctuary lost stopped local authorities from reporting the suspect to immigration officials during two previous drunk driving arrests, you've defended sanctuary laws. The sheriff says if those laws hadn't been in place officer saying would be alive today. First of all that was a very tragic situation. And my heart and my prayers go out to the officers family as well. As to the members of the law enforcement community who work hard sacrifice themselves each and every day to keep us safe. My experience in New York has been different where members of the NYPD clearly the most professional highly trained law enforcement entity in the country. If not.
