"With that. Have emotion that we're dealing with this morning. But but also are. Also from the Muslim police department. This morning return to the law enforcement services to provide safety and security community. They're out there right now, protecting survey hurting and what I'm asking the community is their support. I want you to go. Oh this week. The need to know that you as the community. Care about how feeling so that was shortly after the shooting he was joined by mayor miles Atkins. We talked to you last hour. But again, this is Jordan Sheldon canine officer, go into a routine traffic, stop and this on the heels of what happened less than a week before that at UNC, Charlotte. Governor just a terrible week across the listening area to talk about him react to. Yeah. And the difficult part of this is now everyone in certain positions have some work to do. And some grieving do and it's gonna be a tough process. And let me talk about those people that have some work to do some green do first of all the family of officer shell them. What they're going through is unimaginable. I've watched families evolve who've shot and killed go through the grieving process. And it's it's one of the most emotional things ever. And we're gonna find out more about officer Sheldon's, family and background and parents and wife and children. I don't know all those details yet, but we'll find out about those details, and can you imagine what they're going through right now, their friends, their neighbors or cousins on Kohl's. Their fellow officers or went to training with them. I mean, they're they're grieving like, no one can imagine. It just seems like this individual just was the best of the best by the way, sadly his dog. He was a canine handler is grieving Ramon. Ramon. Ramon is grieving. Let me tell you about another family. That's grieving and I hate to mention this. But one thing our police chief has taught me, and I never thought much about when I was mayor. And when I was governor. But there's another family grieving, and that is the family of Michael Danna. Your shot himself after killing this officer allegedly killing the officer he shot himself. Apparently after retreating back to his apartment complex police went to go get him. They surrounded the building. Early inside the building he made the decision to shoot himself. It's pretty parrot. This guy had some problems. He had been arrested in bell county earlier. Last week for DWI arrests. He was out on bond Ardell county detention center county, just up the street. That states Ville is the center of IRA account. We don't know where county, but most likely he was an Ardo county jail in states Ville, just this past weekend probably had been released. Maybe who knows was under the influence again. And was pulled over he probably solves life following apart. In did the ultimate worst thing you can ever imagine. And that was shoot a police officer was doing his job. Maybe he realized that after it happened. God knows if he's under the influence right now, the police have to investigate sure they're doing all topsy of this individual and find out whether he is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but it's gonna be interesting to see how many times Michael Dana was had been arrested before. He may have had a family. He may have kids too. They had nothing to do with this. But I'm saddened for them to. Just it's just a terrible terrible thing. And they haven't set the funeral arrangements yet. But police officers from all over the state and all over the nation will come to this this funeral and I know canal is I I think can Apple's is one of the best cities in the state of North Carolina. The people they are the best of the best and the real rib. Rebuilding a great city. If any group of people will will help a family, it's the people can Apple's North Carolina. And I'm sure that family Sheldon families get a tremendous amount of support. And let us help them in any way. We can our prayers are also to the police chief has taken this personally, they're reviewing the film. There is a apparently a video of this. We assume his camera was on. So they're gonna review reviewing that say, you know, what was done, right. What was done wrong for future training? And that's going to be very very difficult for the police chief to watch. And then the DA and everyone else. So our prayers with everyone the mayor's doing a good job too. By the way, I thought he did a good job on your show to morning prayers with the mayor and council and probably good chance. The mayor will be doing a eulogy in the funeral which I sadly Vada do several times for police officers, and it was one of the most emotional experience of my life. I don't wish that on anyone. But it was an honor to hug the family. Be with family and outs are turned all support this family and capless North Carolina blessed the Sheldon family he'd like to hear that interview with mayor miles Atkins. "Three FM WBZ. I'm your host Brett Jensen coming out over from the WBZ newsroom filling in for both Thompson who's under the weather today as some of you may have noticed yesterday. Well, it it kicked in and full force at night. So hopefully, he'll be back tomorrow. But if not he'll definitely be back next week. All right. So joining me now coming in also from the WBZ news room is the the lovely and talented, Mark garrison, and Mark here's the thing explained to all the listeners here just a quick back story because there is a major thing going on tonight up and Gerald Ford. I think it's for an elementary school. If I'm not mistaken, where they're having a meeting about this cancer cluster possibility from do powers, can you just give a quick back story update people to where we are. Well, the the meeting tonight is being held by the department of environmental quality of state. Agency. They're trying to decide what you should do with sixteen million tons of coal lash that stored at the Marshall steam station now a lot of people will show up tonight because there is also as we've been reporting this cluster of an unusually high number of thyroid cancer cases, right around the plant. But tonight, the environmental people are just supposed to be taking public input on what to do with the coal ash pit there. Duke wants to leave the stuff there and just put a cap over it a lot of residents. They were going. No scoop this stuff out and get rid of it. And the state has to decide which method to get rid of all that coal lash. Now you've been on top of this from day one. Actually, you're the one who pretty much has lost all this investigation stuff and made this a state story and a regional story at that. So if they just put a cap on it, and you're talking to someone who knows almost nothing about. Coal ash. And maybe our listeners are the same way. It seems to me if you just put a cap on it, even if it rains, and it gets wet and the ground gets wet that some of those toxins if there are taxes of the coal ash would seep into the ground, and possibly wells and streams and everything else. Well that is the concern. Now Duke Energy says there's and Duke acknowledges that the staff has already seeped into the groundwater right around the plant, but do consists that it won't go any further than that. A lot of air residents around there and environmentalists go nonsense. If it in the ground water, it's going to drift, and that's the big concern because coal ashes, indeed toxic. It has cancer causing ingredients in it. Now Duke likes to say, it's not toxic. But there are plenty of scientific studies that say yes, it is. So do you want this stuff there possibly continuing to seep down into the groundwater forty just want to get rid of it? That's alternate. Lee the decision, and it some sites Duke is because do. Because required by law to get rid to close its coal. Lash dumps by I think twenty twenty nine in some of them. They are excavating it, but here Duke says they think this is the best approach to just put a cap over it. And when you say a cluster of thyroid cancer, how many are you just aware of in the recent years 'cause cluster could might mean different things to different people west to specific zip codes that going back as far as nineteen ninety-five there more than there's roughly four hundred cases. And that is much higher about three times higher than what you would expect just in a normal area. So there there's no question that there's a very high number of thyroid cancer cases, their thyroid cancer is almost always caused by environmental issues, particularly radiation. And. You know, there is radiation. Coming from coal ash, Duke university's doing a big study now to see if they can tie those thyroid cancer cases to the coal ash. So far, they haven't you know, that that studies just gotten underway. Do can says no we don't think that's causing Bayreuth cancer. But the the study being done by Duke University, shed some light on that. But it may not be finished before the end of the year talk with Mark garrison of the WBZ newsroom has been on this from day one. And his actually the reason why all this attention has come forth on this. Okay. Finally before I let you get out of here. What do we expect tonight? And what do you expect to happen at the meeting tonight? Well, based on some of the other meetings that have happened. It sounds as though the department of environmental quality will do a presentation to all the people that come on on the scientific reasons to put a cap on on the on this on all this coal ash at the Marshall steam station, the interesting thing about that is the the the environmental department uses no outside scientific studies that we're aware of they just take Duke at its word. And so this tends to get people agitated at the meetings, and you're going to have a lot of people there who are thyroid cancer victims who show up so he could be a pretty spirited meeting. Well, okay. I like this is the last question. The CDC, and maybe national organizations are group's were the American Cancer institute, or whatever I don't know how this works. Are are they looking at this as this piqued their curiosity as well? I don't know that the CDC or even the Cancer Society has gotten involved in this very much it mostly in. This particular case is a state issue between Duke and the environmental department at the state level and a lot of local politicians in the mooresville area. Have certainly been demanding action from the state to do something. But it hasn't to the best of my knowledge expanded much beyond that on a national scope. Well, I tell Mark garrison all the time that he's getting ready to win a lot on wards for this investigation. And all this coverage for Mecklenburg county and Ardell counties very own love canal, basically, Mark, thank you for joining us, buddy..
