"Order in? I ordered online and then I went and grabbed it. From the Burbank location, for whatever reason, they weren't taking pickup orders from Hollywood for whatever reason. I don't know, it's not closed, is it? I was wondering that. I used to live near there. And I wonder what the dome and everything being gone. The dolma shut down in the arc. The ArcLight is shut down, and I'm like, yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. I mean, horror Ramadan. All those business businesses right there. I'm sure in supposedly the domes coming back wags, don't miss supposedly coming back. Maybe this year, maybe this summer, that's the rumor, is that the company that owned it is going to the ArcLight cinemas is gone, but they're going to keep didn't like a Tarantino or somebody like that, buy it? No, Tarantino Tarantino bought. New Beverly and another one he bought over here. Maybe the vista? Yeah, the vista. Yep. Okay. As the fit, wait, yes. Already buy Los feliz three. No, he bought another company took over the Los feliz three two. A lot of great theaters just fucking shut down, including the UCB theater, also shut down. All right. I can't get caught. I've been looking here. I can't get Intel on whether or not the veggie grill by that cinerama dome theater by the now closed arc light is open or not. It looks like it says it's open, but it doesn't necessarily let you order pick up online. So maybe that's what's going on. Here's the thing with UCB Franklin getting shut down. I'm like, hey, I want to pick up a copy of Martin and orloff today. But where? But where? And I go over there. What did you find it? Franklin's closed. No. You want a deep baby. 24 80 P DVD. I ran into roloff. Burned through because I watched him at times hard balls, so. Wow. There was a Christmas where my mom gave me basically every DVD that they sold at the front at UCB theater. She like, and it was like such a weird thing where I was like, how did she even find out about these movies? But she gifted me one bundle of Christmas. Like it was like 5 DVDs and one present. You know what I mean? And I was like what is this? Michael, I stopped by the UCB theater for Christmas. I got you blackballed..

"They will take days to get back to you and may never get back to you. They just they're not good at it. And so i think unless this guy's always on instagram and facebook and all this stuff i'm guessing he's not i think it's probably fine and you're maybe looking for problems that are really there. i think. Just take it easy and relax. And i think it's going to be okay. Well let me ask you this mark because you say i'm assuming the guys that you're talking about are your friends right. Yeah okay. Do you text your wife differently than you. Text your friends for example if your wife reached out would you respond quicker than if a friend reached out. Yes that's my point. I think that if she's reaching out and he's not responding then maybe he isn't as into her as she's hoping interesting. I think i'm good texter. Though is just a little bit intimidated by this phone. In their pocket is kind of a weird thing. I i think unless there are other problems that i think everything's okay but i mean you make a point jerry for sure eastern with your take on this. I feel like you've got some some good input here. I think even with technology barriers. I think that if someone's do they will send a carrier pigeon to get in touch with you like they will do whatever they can do. So i i would be concerned but also come on newly single just just live. It get tried to get out of your head. I know it's a hard thing to do. But i don't know i think that's great advice. No i agree anonymous. You know. I don't think it because you are newly single and and don't put too much stress on finding relationship that quickly. I agree with houston. But i do agree like your new. Newly single your forty or smoking hot like play the field a little bit you know. Go on go on a day to day for a couple of weeks maybe just get them. Wind up figure it all out. Remember that woman that went on one hundred dates not one hundred days but like one hundred. She went on a hundred dates. So maybe anonymous. Hey there you go nice little challenge for yourself. You got the next year so anonymous. Maybe this time next year you can email back on the podcast. Because obviously we'll still airing because we're thriving and you can give us an update on whether you went on one hundred dates in one year. Well that's the big thing too. It's important for you to get texts back in a timely manner. Then that guys probably not for you because even if he's great for you even if you guys are great together whenever he doesn't text you back it's not going to be something that you're fulfilled west so yeah just go more date. I think that's a pretty simple solution. Bought a being bought a boom. Do it for this week's episode. What do you think what do you think. Houston i one thing. Just one quick thing to bring up sira at the end here. so You guys might know that in twenty nineteen. I was the caramel. Corn princess for arclight cinemas. Remember very big deal for me and cinema. Says no more but i haven't been gained. I regained my crown There's a popcorn company called. Thank you popcorn. They're very cool. They'd be like flavored popcorn. And they've named me the 2021 carmel chrome princess and the design my own flavor. I have my own corn. It's called the carmo. Coon princess mix and it's caramel corner with eminem's mix in. Which is what. I do and i go to the movies and i'm really excited about it and you can get it right now and the cool part about it is that if you buy this All the proceeds go to a charity called shoes that fit and it gets Shoes for kids for school..

"Big money changed hands it. I think it was close to five billion dollars or not changed. Yeah did technically changed hands. If you're losing money you're changing money from hand to hand here but it was quite the ride there and i think we're not done yet. But the announcement this morning that they were going to be selling. Eleven million shares caused a little bit of an impact on the price. There was about a twenty percent hike in premarket trading prior to this morning's announcement and then they took a four percent loss which triggered a circuit breaker. And if you don't know what a circuit breaker is it's literally just a pause in the trading of that stock for think it's a predetermined amount of time it's fifteen minutes or by other words is just going crazy right now. It's crazy it's going up it's volatile. It's going all over the place you know. I think what you're seeing here. Is that retail investors. Get a little scared there. They wanted to pull that profit before they saw things disappear when amc decided to announce that they were going to be selling off eleven million shares to it was a capital group. Can't remember who it was off the top my head but you know i think that scares the retail investor when you see that the institutional investors are getting a little bit more. I don't blame them. They'll find amc. And i just come off the worst year and a half ever. I would want to sell off you know. Have that in my kitty as well. I mean that's back up the brinks truck. If that's the case and please do it at the all time high. That would be awesome. I would have done it too but again. That's the way the things are bouncing right. But there's so much interest now in these types of stocks unfortunately the pandemic of closed for good a lot of things as far as the theater chancer that they close the arclight cinemas the pacific theatres chain. Those are closed for good. They're not being brought back only if amc or regal or some other theater chain reopened them under their banner will they be to go ahead and open up and that includes the historic cinema. Dome in hollywood some hoping that somebody will be able to go ahead and open that one up. because that's historical monument to me and filmmaking. Alamo draft house is reopening up. They were on the verge of bankruptcy. Now they're thriving now they're going to open up more theaters..

"All right our first story this week. Amc entertainment has sold two hundred and thirty million dollars in stock in order to go on a buying spree. they're already talking to the landlords of arclight cinemas pacific theatres. some of the movie chains. One of the things that happened in a pandemic or crisis is that some of the small players fall because they don't have enough cash or ability to raise cash to survive while bigger players that either have the cash or the ability to borrow cash and ab- scooping them up and i think that's what we're about to see we're about to see amc gonna buying spree of a bunch of little feeder jane's regionals and things like that that could have individually survived like the crazy thing is so it's not like amc had this money went and raise this money so arkley could also like investors could have just invested straight in arc light instead of investing game see to by arc light but there's this belief among certain investment groups. That bigger is better in there will be efficiencies of scale and like i guess there might be i guess. Amc might be able to get like cheaper popcorn buying it bigger volume and they'll have more powers negotiations with the studios. Here's a line from the from the article on the rap about this we also have coverage on it on no film school but the new deal The recent market surge has enabled the new deal since the eight point. Five million shares represent a small portion of the current trading volume. That's a wall street jargon. This transaction underscores the real value of having some authorized share capital available for us to opportunistically capitalize on shareholder value creation possibilities as and when they arise with our increase liquidity and increasing vaccinated population blah blah blah blah timeframe to go on the offense. So it's sort of like that's part of the the size and scale that affords them the ability to get their hands on this kind of cash quickly to make this kind of deal. That's my reading of that but it sounds like that's the reasoning. Why it's amc. I guess and not having the ability to get that kind of authorized share capital. What that means now. I feel like i need a glossary. Is it always goes back to we. Have this idea that like there are natural forces that are actually the results of design and so the way our stock markets are designed to operate is. They're designed to favor bigger organizations that think in shorter-term increments and so like if we redesigned our stock market. Which like. i don't know how to do. But i'm sure i'm sure there's a lot of people great ideas that favored longer term investments. That paid out money over time and favored smallness instability. It would have been easier for smaller companies to find those direct investments. I remember once. I met an investor and a coffee shop. It's a long story but we're like sitting three in a row and a coffee shop in someone else was like telling like the table next to us. Someone was saying about a need they had. I owned a company that time that provided that i like interrupted their conversation to be like. Oh hey i actually do what you need. You should call me. Give my card and the guy was like that was a really smooth way to do that. And we like a long conversation about sales and wind up people and stuff. And then i tried to put him in an idea and he was like. I'm really not interested in anything. That's not a core technology that will make billions of dollars. And i was like yeah. I don't have any like that. He's like yeah of course but like And it was one of those moments where i was like you know. Investors want tax returns investors. Big you know all of those things and so like does bum me out. That it's like. I really wish that somehow that two hundred like that the market. I don't blame any individual player in this but it would be awesome if our market were designed such that two hundred and thirty billion dollars could just be separately given to each of the individual little movie theater chains to keep doing what they are doing. As opposed to having to be given to one entity that will then go up by all the others and like that's can you realize names e in particular. Yeah yeah no i have. You make really good point. Amazing i think knocking min height myself before i say it but i think i have a really good corollary to industry creative experience in the film making industry. Which is that when you say you're a writer or director and you have a bunch of properties you're working on like ideas and you take a bunch to your manager and agent and they start trying to sell them. They will always take the ideas they think are the most profitable to the biggest companies. Because they're not that interested in small games because they get a small piece. They are interested the first they wanna they want to hunt the biggest game i because they're only going to get a certain amount like the hyenas that they are. Just kidding. 'cause you're doing the hunting right. They're just getting a percent. I'm just kidding they. They're they're whatever hunt you hunt and kill with your you know creative with your manager. Agent that manager agent is getting ten percent fifteen percent so or whatever so that i think the correlation is that amc is for the investor. It's the biggest bet. It's the biggest by. You're going to get the biggest chunk. Your tiny chunk is going to be a bigger chunk whereas if it's small investors then the junk is going to be smaller because the total is smaller. So i think that that's why we see this across all things in business where you know i. I am surprised. Honestly that we haven't seen in all this an amazon decide to buy an amc yet or frankly not just low but that was the other thing that was interesting in. This is like only two hundred and thirty million dollars like there's movies that cost two hundred thirty million dollars like this is too small potatoes for amazon. To care about like amazon's only ever bought two or three things ever and they're all in the billions of dollars range and mike. This is like why doesn't apple. Let's let's like. I wonder aloud. Why just say like hey you know what. Let's by all the movie theater like everywhere like why not right now would be the perfect time to just be like we own movie theaters like if you see a movie theater. You're seeing in an apple theater. Theory i wanna hear it. I'm curious dying model. No because that's no. I don't think i think that anybody. I don't think it's dying model. My grand children will still see movies in theaters. Like what's coming. The only be like one hundred people left on earth. But i think they'll still fire up the movie theater on friday nights. No i mean apple's not buying movie theaters because aesthetically. They're not interested in them. If every movie theatre had been built most in years and all had glass stairways the vast majority of them. They all like spaceships. Yeah the ugliest ones are the most revenue beneficial. The beautiful ones are still not apple. Beautiful right like be addiction. The are still like not anything. Apple is interest the end but then why does it networks netflix's basically in crazy debt. But don't you feel like net flicks would be a really interesting like we own the mood. The we are movies. It's part of our brand like it would be cool if netflix defined its friend beyond just we have a bunch of nasr really in their name though. Yeah yeah that's literally. But then i was on was known for like i'm sorry county just but but the that's true but then the thing with amazon to me. That's amazing is. They started opening bookstores because they were born to destroy the bookstore. None of.

"Remember that it's a show and it needs to be entertainment in a sense You know. I think A lot of people think that know just get on the mic and just start talking and people will will enjoy. I'm saying but there has to be a performance side of it a little bit and it doesn't have to be laid on like hey welcome to takeda but now there is there you have to remember what you're creating is entertainment. And and that should be part of the forefront of all thoughts of the things you do. Is this entertaining is something that can sell josh. My number one number. One thing that i always think to say is what is your mentality about it. because the thing that i see a lot in the podcasting realm is that people start a podcast and what is it. Is it a business or is it a hobby because those are two very different factories because if it's a hobby chill bro. But if it's business you're asking the questions all the time. Like what corey said. Is this topic even entertaining. Is this topic important. Do the season of this or should we do this. And when he's treated as a business you are much more A lot more thought goes into it in terms of Strategically strategy content. Planning 'cause you're thinking of how to do the thing. yeah With my hands for me. My bit of advice is going to be Your hesitation is probably more detrimental than you think you need to get out in earner scrapes. Get it wrong before you get right Because a lot of the times you're gonna be guesstimate before you even do a thing and you should always constantly ask yourself those questions but don't stop yourself being like. Oh shy work with other people. Before i just do my own thing just work with other people. Just you know collaborate you know. Put the episode. I'll do the thing if you get called out. You get called out but you have to be able to do that. You can't be paralyzed by like. Should i would i how do i. The audio is imperfect. the said. i'm here and it's like you want your your in more dire risk of getting Drowned out by everyone else. Then you are of making a splash. And that's just to put it very nicely. So you've got to have the courage to go out there and do it Was say it's good last question last question So now that oh. This is from talent the dragon so now that every major nerd group or every other major nerd group has started a dnd other table top campaign. When is nerd. On's going to happen another favourite question. I think that gets asked Which is good. I think it's it's in written in the stars of like people people look to us for these things. We have a couple seeds planet. I'll put it that way. So couple of spoiling anything in kabul seeds have been planted Now we're just seeing which one goes. Maybe we should just be toxic and just have it on a paywall. Yeah that works tom. No yeah yeah. It's something that you are not alone. We want to do it but yeah it's it's a little bit of time and a little bit of a coordination so we wanna make sure we do it and give you guys the best version of it or at least the best way we can give you know. It's so good if it is really really good with them making fun of each other on it and then became this thing. Yeah and you have like fragile. Rock no not fry rock. I'm sorry no yeah farrago. i started. They were like here is all of the. Here's all the technology that you need and the puppeteers are at home doing these doing things. So i mean it's like if anything like this is opened up a massive. I don't wanna say freedom because it's not the right word but it's it's opened up a huge opportunity more opportunity for evidence in confidence to make some like even just from us to just to take it from a personal standpoint if you look at our videos from the beginning of the pandemic to the end like not the end but where we are now Of the change in how we meant able to adopt and adapt. And i think that that's been the whole. That's been the whole thing where it's like. Well how do we do this. How do we continue to do this. Right and still produce high quality content. I think it's if anything. It's just opened a huge opportunity and much bigger things to be able to be made next question. Yeah this is from a black diablo. Mamba the new mortal kombat movie is coming out. Which character do you feel that. You harmonize with off that movie. I have no idea always scorpion in in real life as a kid. I was a big subzero fan but as you were and growing up. It's a scorpion fan all day. Because he's the one that's been giving the character. Development mean also a kid though lucane as king king. I don't know alive about mortal kombat. Except to say i was gonna say scorpion me. Yeah i just not unique answer. But it's the best with the games in recent years right and it's been like a real big one for me because he's like. Oh god i messed up the line. I had to fix it all was explaining to me like the whole back story between sub zero and scorpion and i was like there's back story. Oh four i knew all thing. I did play through on my stream. I played through the story mode of mortal kombat eleven. Yeah eleven right. Great story great writing great acting. Well done next question. Yeah next wanted to train is from a town of dragon. How do you feel about. Jensen echoes being batman in the upcoming batman movie. Finally for for those who are listening. Isn't that like the absolute worst. Yeah because it's quote unquote a utopia writes quote unquote peace has been established. And that's a thing where it's like it has to be like it can't be like zombie like peace isn't established yet so a utopia. That's the answer may have what's called not the matrix I'll librium picks. Aunt paul from peaky blinders past fifty two from cancer this week. is obviously season. Six got delayed filming. They went back into production recently. I don't i don't know if she's a part of it at all But it's definitely gonna change the trajectory for the tv show as a whole but also Just heartbreaking because she was a wonderful actress. She's a powerhouse on that show mustang everybody's posts like just actors from all of the things that she's been in and just like yeah. She just seems like she was just a dope person. Yeah like a really cool. Prime her her husband damian lewis who. I'm also a very big fan of a band of brothers and stuff like that had a very heartfelt message that he was the one who announced it to everyone on on twitter. And i'm heartbroken by it she's probably my In my top three favorite characters on that show by tar for sure Yeah definitely. I think i had her as my number two actually But you know. Definitely lots of love out to to Damian lewis and the rest of her family and her family as well peaky blinders. It's a huge loss to the acting. World i wish them all the best. But they made a huge announcement that was a strike to the film industry that they are closing the doors of arclight cinemas and pacific theaters. Yeah I don't i don't know if arc light is a a internet or like a national one but in la there's like several locations including the world famous cinerama dome You seen pictures of hollywood. You've probably seen pictures of the cinerama dome For me I'm more hit by pacific theatres. 'cause one of the theaters that i went to growing up off. It was a pacific theater. Down in san diego and It's it's hard news to here and Makers are up and not up. arms isn't really quite the right term but they are speaking out and just saying how there was an article done by the l. a. times basically the headline is the click beta. I can't imagine hollywood without and then it's just a bunch of filmmakers. Explain why this loss matters. And it's people like edgar writes A whole bunch of other filmmakers. Of just i mean the cinerama dome alone is is such a. It's like at the and went down. Yeah and the and is now. amc amc africa. Yeah so it's i mean we've been talking the past few months just the state of even just the theater industry and What's going to happen and they tried. I think even just a couple of weeks ago. There was a time. Let's let's let's put this in perspective. There was a time in this country where there was a lot of known about this virus and it wrist overwhelming hospitals in some areas of the country overwhelmed hospitals. There are parts of this country that have done better than others. You would not know this from a lot of the media coverage the media coverage for example of brian Georgia relentlessly negative. Would he was the first governor to reopen his state and yet his state has outperformed every other state economically including florida were robbed. This was the second governor to reopen his state and and his lockdown was barely a minimum lockdown and yet the media coverage of him as well was relentless upbeat and positive about andrew. "Clamoring to get the vaccine. This just is not helpful. Covert coverage by the us national media is an outlier study. Finds bruce sacra dot an economics. Professor at dartmouth college noticed something last year about the cove nineteen television coverage. He was watching on cnn pbs. It almost always negative regardless of what he was seen in the date or hearing from scientists he knew when cova cases were rising in the us. The news coverage emphasized the increase when cases were falling the coverage instead focused on those places where cases were rising and vaccine research began showing promising results coverage downplayed as far as he could tell if he was not sure whether it's perception but he wasn't sure if he is perception was correct to check. He began working with two other researchers building database of coverage from every major news network. Cnn fox news politico the new york times and hundreds of other sources in the us and overseas the researchers did analyzed it with a social science technique that classifies languages positive neutral negative. The results show that sacra dots instincts were right and not just because the pandemic had been mostly grim story the coverage by us publications with national audience has been much more negative than coverage by every other source that the researchers analyzed including scientific journals major international publications in regional us media the most. Well read us. Media are outliers in terms of negativity. Molly coca co author of the study told me about eighty seven percent of covid coverage national. Us media last year was negative. The sheer was fifty one percent and international media fifty three percent. Us regional media and sixty four percent scientific journals notably the coverage was negative in both us media outlets liberal audiences like msnbc and those with conservative audiences like fox news. Sacramento's careful to emphasize that he does not the journalists usually report falsehoods. The issue is what facts. They emphasize still the new study which the national bureau of economic research is published as a working paper titled. Why is all cova. Bad news calls for some self reflection in the media and impossibility. They will not self reflect in part of this. Let's be honest was all about trump as well but the negative coverage actually continues even now into the biden administration. The negative coverage is continuing led by. Dr fauci. Telling people stay home. It doesn't matter. Stay home It doesn't matter you can't you you can't go outside. You've got to wear your masks at some point. The assumption of the risk has to take some level of precedent overall of this washington. Examiner has great editorial today to consider. We are fast approaching the point in the coronavirus pandemic at which the supposed cure is almost as bad as the disease. This isn't about the johnson. And johnson vaccine this is about the closure and restrictions on civil society on main street and on businesses where people get together. Governments rover year have demanded compliance from restaurants. Movie theater storefronts gyms play places and countless other third places the closures the sanitation rules the capacity limits on these institutions has been based more in fear and outdated practice than in science but proprietors along yet for many businesses. There was simply no way under these onerous rules to pay the bills. These are the very predictable. Side effects of the non medical interventions. The state and local governments have imposed then. The federal government has recommended. At what point can we just let americans be responsible for their own actions. At what point can we say. The the burden of risk is on the unvaccinated. At what point can we say you've got to decide. There was a time. Let's let's let's put this in perspective. There was a time in this country where there was a lot of about this virus and it wrist overwhelming hospitals in in some areas of the country overwhelmed hospitals. Cuomo who has wrecked new york's economy or gavin newsom. Who's wrecked is or gretchen. Whitmer who's wrecked hers. Schools in blue parts of the country continued to be close. I don't know if any of y'all saw it went viral social media this weekend. The bill maher monologue from his real time show on. Hbo on friday night pointing out that overwhelmingly. The transmission of the virus among kids is is small and yet blue states are scared to death to reopen and therefore spirits to stay home with their kids putting them bind red state america at this point. There was simply no way under these owners rules to pay the bills. The curie inc for example announced this month the permanent closure of its arclight cinemas and pacific eater chain citing the heavy losses incurred or the pandemic..

What a sad day it is. I know, And we have all spent so many glorious hours at the arc lights, especially the one in Hollywood. Talk about many, and yeah, from your perspective. So it's funny when you're a film critic, especially if you're a freelancer like so many of us are like you don't have an office, right? You watch movies at your house or you right at your house, and so going to the Arc light on a Monday night to see a big studio release, and all your fellow critics were there, and there's a buzz in the audience as people who love film You know, it's It's like going to your favorite office but also your favorite watering hole and there's such a great energy the minute you walked into that lobby with just the job. Soaring feelings and the huge marquee with all the times and the big clock, and you felt like you were walking into a cathedral of swords. And yet there's also a very intimate sense of community because you could go and have a bye deep beforehand or have a glass of wine afterward and talking about what you have just seen

And i'm i'm really sad about this hour feeling amanda. I am personally gut it i listen. It is ben a year of loss and on the scale of things like a movie theater that charges. A lot for tickets is is small but as you said it has been a huge part of my life. A huge part of your life. A huge part of the lives of a lot of people in los angeles who go to see movies which by the way is primarily what los angeles does so a pretty big community.
