"And action. I'm gonna film it. And action. Video tape tells the truth. On this day in 1974, Stevie Wonder started the two week run at number one in the US album charts with fulfilling this first finale. Say that three times. Back at Asheville. Hey, really? His second US number one, the album received three Grammy awards, including album of the year in 1974. On the state of 1971, during a US tour, Led Zeppelin appeared at Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, California. Countless major acts have appeared here, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Van Morrison, The Kinks, Bruce Springsteen, Genesis, Elvis Costello, The Clash, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie. You didn't say Grateful Dead. No, they're not listed and I don't blame them. On this day in 1968, Roy Orbison's house in Nashville burnt down. His two eldest sons both died in the- Ooh. Orbison was on tour in the UK at the time of the accident. I didn't know about that. Yeah, he had a tough life. He did. Even when he was a kid, he had a tough life, yeah. Even his comeback was tragic, because, you know, he came back and he died. But he went out on top, man. Went out on top. He fucking went out on top with the Traveling Wilburys. He can blame Tom Petty for that, from what I hear. What's that, killing him? I heard, the rumor is he gave him a line of coke and he had a heart attack. That's what I've heard. Don't know how true it is, though. Would you read that in Rolling Stone? Eh, eh, eh, eh. No, actually, they wouldn't report that because they love Tom Petty, so they wouldn't report it. On this day in 1968, the first episode of the comic strip, The Archies, was aired on US TV. The recording group had contributions from Ron Dante, Andy Kim, Jeff Barry, and others. Rock mogul, Don Kirshner, who also brought us The Monkees, was put in charge of the studio group. The following year, The Archies started an eight-week run at number one in the UK singles chart, with Sugar Sugar becoming the longest-running one-hit wonder in the UK. I love Sugar Sugar. And they were number one in the United States, too. Yeah, I mean, great song. Betty of Veronica, which one? I always liked the Veronica, the black hair. I always have a propensity for black-haired girls. Okay, so sailing is the ultimate, yeah, right song. Sugar Sugar is the ultimate bubblegum song. Bubblegum pop, yeah. Yes, it is. On this day in 1967, filming continued for the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour in Southwest England. The Beatles searched for a quiet, secluded field in which they could conduct filming, but once they disembarked from the bus and set up for shooting, scores of onlookers began to crowd around, causing a traffic jam that required the police to step in. You think? I know. On this day in 1955, one of the greatest entertainers, this is my spin on it, one of the greatest entertainers in the history of music, Little Richard, entered the New Orleans recording studio to begin two days of recording. Things were not going well, and during a break, Richard and his producer, Bumps Blackwell, went to the Dew Drop Inn for lunch. Richard started playing the piano in the bar like crazy, singing a loud and lewd version of Tutti Frutti. With only 15 minutes left in the session, Richard recorded the song and coined the phrase a-wop-bob-a-loo-bop-a-la-bam-boom.

You think? I know. On this day in 1955, one of the greatest entertainers—this is my spin on it—one of the greatest entertainers in the history of music, Little Richard, entered the New Orleans recording studio to begin two days of recording. Things were not going well, and during a break, Richard and his producer, Bumps Blackwell, went to the Dew Drop Inn for lunch. Richard started playing the piano in the bar like crazy, singing a loud and lewd version of Tutti Frutti. With only 15 minutes left in the session, Richard recorded the song and coined the phrase, A-wop-bob-a-loo-bop-a-la-bam-boom. Yeah. Yeah. I'm telling you, guy, one of the greatest entertainers ever. You know what? Him? Shut up. The hard rock—he was the hard rock or heavy metal guy of his day. He was. Well, him and Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis was like that, too. They had some serious—they were not pop music. They were rock. And Little Richard says he should have got credit for rock and roll. That's what he is. That was one of his things. Wait, Lou, we discussed this on the show. Like, where did rock and roll go? Like, rock and roll was dangerous, and those two represented it, and then, like, it got taken down in the early 60s. You had that horrible—rock was destroyed, really, for a while. Oh, yeah. And there was the teen schmaltz singers. Yeah. It sounded like Lucille. Even like, my son's 17, so we're listening to music in the car, and Lucille came in like, I never listen to the drums like that. It's pounding. Like I said, it's heavy. Yeah. I saw him when he goes, shit. You're like, wow. I was like, you know. John Bonham based rock and roll, the intro on, I hear you keep it knocking. It's the same thing. Heavy stuff. That might have been Earl—actually, the drummer, I think his name is Earl Palmer. He's credited with being one of the inventors of rock and roll. Yeah. Just being in those situations. Yeah. Marie Martin says, yeah, he said he was the king of rock and roll. Little Richard. He was too flamboyant, though. He was too flamboyant, and they didn't want it. He wouldn't get accepted. He always was an outsider just because of his flamboyancy. They didn't like that. So he didn't get the credit he deserved. But he did eventually become an icon. But in his day, he wouldn't. They wouldn't really give it to him. Because look what he's been through. And he was commenting on Chuck Berry, another one who went through a lot of shit. It was great. But I think Little Richard with the gay thing, too. I think he was so flamboyant, they weren't going to even relate that to rock and roll, and they wouldn't be accepted. And I think he knew it. I'm not speaking for him, but I would think that he knew that that was the case. He was stupid, yeah. He's just like, fuck it. I'm just going to be me. I don't care what they say. And his time came in the 80s, and he got a big microphone in the 80s because he was everywhere. He was funny as hell. He was entertaining. He was engaging. He was endearing. He was funny.

The Seven Sins of Memory, With Daniel Schacter, PhD
"Your book is called the seven cents of memory. Can you first of all talk about those sins are why you call them. Sins and some of them are as you say. Sins of omission incentive comission. What are the differences back around. Two thousand nine hundred ninety nine as i was kind of serving the literature on memory. Errors struck me that while psychologist known for decades that memory is prone to error. Nobody had really tried to organize our our knowledge. And try to suggest way of classifying these errors and my best take on. The literature was that there are these seven basic categories of memory errors and so by analogy with the well-known seven ancient deadly sins. I couldn't resist calling in seven cents of memory. So they're three sins of omission different kinds of forgetting four sins of comission when memory is present but either wrong or intrusive so the the three sins of omission. I call transients. That's forgetting over time. We all know from our everyday experience that all things being equal we tend to remember experiences and that are recent in time better than those that are occurred long ago memories tend to fade over time. The second Sin of omission. I call absent mindedness. So this doesn't this is not memory fading over time. This is kind of a breakdown at the interface of memory and attention. So we may be distracted focused on upcoming tasks and we put our keys down. We don't notice where we put those keys down. The event really never gets into memory. That would be an absent minded kind of forgetting or we may put our keys down and know exactly where they are But then we're distracted at the time of retrieval. We walk we walk out the door without archies. that would be another example of absent. Mindedness third kind of forgetting sins of omission. I call blocking this is when memories available. It hasn't faded away over time Where trying to remember doing our best to remember. But we can't come up with information that's actually stored in memory that i call blocking Omission since

I haven't done a hockey spotting a while due to do Archy spied now that we'd foot football to bed for at least a couple of weeks before we get it right it up again. It's a 52 week a year sport I get that, but sometimes a little bit more activity than others. We've got a chance to get back into the NHL, which we should do so to help me do that is one of the good hockey guys I had him on for the first time is against ledge here and after I got the money, so we gotta get David on again. So he came out with me a handful of times last year having out of mine since this season started. It is my pleasure to bring back David Pignata from Sirius XM. Tony tell network and also entering Keith. Of the fourth period. Find hockey website Dave got a backyard you don't but I'm good man. I'm good. Good. Thanks for having me again. My pleasure. No, thank you for coming on. I know the NHL announced this week that they're putting new virus protocols in place. Good for them that they're staying on top of things and reacting and certainly not putting their head in the sand that they know they have to stay fluid and how they handle it. Tell us his best. You understand what the changes are what they're going to accomplish, totally going forward. Yeah, well, you know, they're hoping that the new protocols are being put in place are going to effectively help minimize the possibility of you know this, this virus spreading even more as it has throughout the NHL number of players have Goddamnit! It's gotten spread throughout one particular game between New Jersey and Buffalo s. So they're hoping That this minimizes that that possibility and we've been seeing you know, his players have been added to the covert protocols list over the last couple of weeks. We're seeing a lot more players. Taken off that list, which is certainly a promising sign, But they're being a little more and these protocols were agreed by the N H l P A and the NHL as well and effectively, it means just more Uh, seclusion? Yes, from the rest of, you know, regular society. So if you're going home even with you know, if you're in your home town, you've got to stay at home as much as you possibly can. It's basically rink. Home other than emergencies or absolute necessities. In terms of going out there. They're highly recommending that all of these players stay home as much as they can, even when they're in their hometown, not just on the road. They're cracking down and well, they should. If they want to get it season in now, here's my question. What? That it's you potentially because you've gotto hope for the best and prepare for the worst. If someone gets caught out, and we live in a, um, now social media driven world where everybody's got a camera in their hands and instagram account, and whatever else if a guy gets caught out running to the store to do something doesn't have a mask on eyes somewhere that he shouldn't be and it gets out. Are the NHL going to Jessica warnings that a gun and two punishments is it gonna be finds? Is it going to be suspensions? It's good that they're cracking the whip. How are they going to make sure that the new rules are paid attention to Yeah, That's a good point. I mean, right now. I would imagine based on what happened with Washington capitals. Now the capital's bit of a different situation there on the road there, you're not allowed to congregate in hotel rooms. While you're on the road. You can do it in the main area. In the main designated conference room that they have set up with social distancing in place. But you can't have a couple of guys in your room, watching TV or cracking a few beers or anything like that. So the capital's did that four guys they got caught and the team that's fine. $100,000 and those players have to be put on the protocol list, and they missed about four games each at least. If this were to happen out in a public setting, I would imagine we're certainly going to see similar actions and sanctions that would be put on against the player in the team. What extent from a suspension or any you know, From that perspective, I'm not sure. But it certainly looks like the team would be held accountable more so than anything similar to what we saw with the caps. Like I said they got they got fined $100,000. I'm pretty sure players don't want toe. Be responsible and, you know, be potentially responsible for spreading this virus throughout the league. Good way to fall out of favor with your organization real fast because of the 100 grand. You mentioned the devil's in the sabers and the one particular game in which some of the game officials also tested positive afterwards s O. They do rightfully believe that it was spread during an actual playing of the game. They've got issues. The Avalanche. The wild, The Flyers have now miss pretty significant numbers of games. Some positive test. Some contact, contact testing tracing, that is shown positive and they've had to be over and an abundance of caution. Very careful with those teams. Here's where it adds up to an issue for me, and I hope you have the answer. It is because I don't and I'm really inquisitive. I checked today standings, The Vancouver conduction played more games than anybody else. They've already logged 18 games and 54 game season. The Devils have played nine Now I'm not a math wiz. But 18 and nine means that the Devils have only played half the games that the clocks have played. And usually you don't have that in a season that get team again. He came here to add the team that misses a game for whatever reason, will football to a three mind? Not twice as many games. The vehicle we're gonna have to now played twice as many as the Devils. That kind of different just doesn't happen, and we know why it has happened. It's all covered related. The NHL..

Are you using the dialogue telephone with this. Integration or have you done something more specific to integrate into context. Yeah it's a great question. So i use the telephone gateway for proof of concept but it is not known as not suitable production in my opinion right. Because when you're when you're dealing with a call center because let's remember what we're trying to do these are use case. We're talking about a call center right so you don't wanna drop your customers calls you want to ultimately maintain control of the call right and so when you got your entire phone everything going to dial flow it. What happens what happens. If you call drops go there and let's not pretend that you know that big tech giants don't have areas of me. We had a problem example last week. If you're using your of your applications outside louis jars is we can actually maintain that allstate and this is one of the advantages that telephones have also an offering this. We run our own phone network if you think of it we we are your gatekeepers to the internet to the cloud to the ps right. So we're situated in probably the most perfect place often these virtual agents servers. I mean we have direct fiber between our data center and google's data centers in the same building right as well as full access to a large as the seven network footprint and again if you think about support let's say you do have call drop. Are you calling google. And saying i want you to figure out what carrier and who's responsible for that drawl right when it comes to telecom. It's already a fiercely competitive market which means that there's a certain baseline expectations of quality and product support. So yeah i mean he's already baked into into our. We have business if you've got a call issues or whatnot. Yeah we'll figure that out we'll actually work with carriers will figure out who's at fault and in the case of dialogue though it gives us an advantage of resiliency right so in those cases at nine. Am of course went went. All those calls were failing because such and such was having problems or whatever it may have been you know. "Brian What? Even before the pandemic, many in the Bay Area were struggling to hold on to their housing as rents and home prices soared. Course, the pandemic only made matters. Worse. Now some local programs to help tenants have gone into overdrive. Today we look at two of those efforts we start in Oakland with KQED housing reporter Erin Baldessari. When the pandemic hit marquees more lost his job. Not long after that he lost his home, too. Oakland native was living in mountain view and working as a forklift driver. But after being laid off in April, he told his landlord he wouldn't be able to make rent and moved out. He and his six year old daughter started couch surfing. I lost everything. Basically, it was a very big struggle. Make sure my daughter always had a roof over her head, even if I didn't, But normally I was that family and friends off. I probably stayed in my car or maybe twice After six months of applying to jobs, he was finally offered a position and Alameda health system and he found a two bedroom apartment in Oakland. But he still had a problem how to pay the security deposit and first month's rent. That's when he learned about keep Oakland housed. The idea is to really stop homelessness before it happens. Zoe Polk is the executive director of the East Bay Community Law Center. One of three nonprofits partnering with the city of Oakland to get people to help they need to stay housed. Some folks needed legal support. Some people need mental assistance, and some people in need actual housing. Keep Oakland House game Archies the money he needed to move into his apartment. It actually had me in tears, and I just appreciate it more than anything I really did. The program has helped nearly 5000 families. Inviting more than $11.5 million in rental in legal aid. It got started in 2018 in response to rapidly rising rents and homelessness in the city. And then the pandemic it keep. Oakland housed cell calls for assistance soar in the light of coded This became even more imperative that people are able to stay a place where they know people places they're comfortable in a place where they have been able to keep their family together. Polk says. The coming year will still be tough for renters keep Oakland House will continue to give out rental aid and advocate for the state and county to extend eviction protections. Keep open house is a lot of work to do in this next year of making sure that we're not putting the cart before the horse in terms of trying to evict people, But Paul is concerned about what will happen to the people who are still out of work and who continue to take on rent it. There is some help on the way from the federal government. Congress approved $25 billion in rent relief as part of the last stimulus package, and President elect Joe Biden is proposing billions more. I'm Erin Baldessari KQED news. Now to Santa Clara County, where a novel relief program has raised funds and helped 15,000 families pay for needs during the pandemic, including direct help with rent. KQED s Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez is here to tell us more about that. And Joe, What is the need that we're seeing? Particularly in Santa Clara County right now? Well, you know, talking to the director of destination home. Her name is Jennifer loving, organized all this fundraising. She really put that need best into context. We had 32,000 families come to us for help in the first three days that we had this relief effort open. It was an avalanche like we have never seen before. Yeah, And and despite that avalanche, this program was able to help about 15,000 people, which is a lot but not the full need statewide. There's some 700,000 Californians who are on the brink of losing their homes due to missing rent or mortgage, and that number comes to us from an ongoing U. S. Census Bureau survey. And many of these people were given direct rental assistant. But why would they need that? With eviction protections in place in the state? The short answer is time, right? And, and the long answer is a study in Santa Clara County, which you know, called the background tissue in eviction time bomb within expected 40,000 people likely to become homeless once the eviction protections like the ones you mentioned end. Excuse me, folks having lost their jobs, You know, they haven't been able to keep current on the rent. I talked to one fellow from San Jose. He was saving up with his wife to buy their first home, especially they're looking forward to it is they have two toddlers and toe. Ephron. His name is was telling me about a conversation he had with his wife about using that savings should he lose his job and stop getting paychecks? So I started talking to her. And she was a little nervous of the beginning because she thought that that I wasn't gonna stop receiving the chicks. And she got a little upset. And so she actually cried when we were talking about it, but well, what we were going to do with anything and everything? Yeah. After that discussion, he actually did lose his job at a catering company and they had to use all their savings. Savings for their first home down payment on just paying the rent. That was through October. It's so heartbreaking when you think about how hard it is to save money and how long it takes to save money. Oh, yeah, it was just him. You know, she isn't working, just taking care of the kids, and it's just No, it's them together, trying to squeak by the Silicon Valley strong fund that we're talking about here today. It helped effort and his family pay their rent after that, so they wouldn't incur debt. They may have exhausted their savings, but they'll be able to get back on their feet faster because this assistance and maybe even hopefully able to buy that home one day. And they gave out this money in a pretty unique way, Didn't they? Well, they thought this was the best way to do it. Destination home, the nonprofit lead on who raised the funding reach out to some 70 nonprofits throughout San Clair County. These are folks who have their the ground and, you know, they know the people in the communities that they serve, but you know, it was very disparate. So any group in one case of Cancer awareness group focusing on helping the Latino community all of a sudden they are, they are going from medical professionals to dispersing. Rent assistance so wild turn around in their training and what they know how to do, But you can imagine that their clients need this help, you know, imagine cancer patient who lost her job as limited work prospects because they're high coded risk. S Oh, yeah. A lot of people said that they needed that help. The state has some rules in place to protect renters from being evicted, but This expires at the end of this month. January. What message are you hearing for? State legislators? Yeah, from sounds a mayor Let Sam Accardo nonprofit leaders. All of them are hoping the state will act quickly to extend eviction protections. But you know, people are still struggling. But they say that's not enough. They want to see some sort of rent relief, paired with this also As part of his budget. Governor Newsome has proposed $600 payments to low income Californians, so that could help many people. But the full relief maybe beyond California's means. There's a recognition that help may need to come from the federal government. KQED is Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez. Thank you. Thank you for having me. You're listening to.

Which are quite prepared to treat tuition as they would a car's price, something toe haggle over. Here's this weekend's Jennifer Cash Enka When it comes to higher education, bargaining power, is shifting away from colleges and universities and toured families. Josh Mitchell has written about the shift for the Wall Street Journal and joins us now. Josh, What did you find out about tuition, while the pandemic has given families more leverage to bargain for tuition discounts when they are getting their offers from from schools. This was actually a trend that had Ah been going on before the pandemic. So this is a Preexisting friend that the pandemic has accelerated, But basically, schools are in a tight position. Right now. They Are expecting a possible enrollment decline. You know 11 reason, for example, is fewer international students are going to be going to school next year. On DH, You know, families are more price conscious. They've either lost jobs or their businesses of fan businesses. Their businesses have Um, been hurt by the pandemic. And so right now, you have this normal negotiation process that happens to clean family school and family find themselves in a better position now. Teo Archy for reduced to tuition. Josh, we talking about mostly private schools, or does this encompass, um public universities as well? But we are talking mostly about private schools, but this type of negotiation process is increasingly happening. At public schools and the context here is that For years and years. Uh, mostly private schools have turned to consultants to determine how much parents are are able and willing to pay. And so one of the things that's been happening for a while now is schools will collect a lot of data data on perspective. Students. Um this data includes, you know, sex race Where where they live. You know the exact address of where they live, whether their parents are college graduates or not, And this is in addition to what there. S a T scores are and what their high school deepa is. And then they send that data to consultants. You think crunched the numbers and come up with an algorithm to determine how much the next year's class will be willing to pay. And this is how schools for awhile now, particularly private schools have have come up with individual discounts for different students to again extract the most money they can. They're trying to figure out how willing How able you are to pay public colleges are now getting into this because public colleges you know, some of them are struggling, and so they need to figure out You know, how can they extract the most money from the next year's freshman class on DH? The schools will say, Look, this is not just for us to, you know, make money. This is also for us to determine You know which students need the most financial aid, But there's you know, several things going on here. They do want obviously maximize the money they're making. And they also want to determine how to help students that need help. The most. We're speaking with Josh Mitchell, The Wall Street Journal, Josh. Obviously, things air rather chaotic in the world right now, including what will happen in the fall or even in August, when colleges open up again. How far are families going and deciding or not deciding to enroll? Also, that's a good question, because one of the things that's going on this year there was a a consent decree between the Justice Department and one of the main trade groups for colleges that was signed. Late last year, and basically that consent decree said that colleges are now able to recruit students beyond May 1. There used to be this hard deadline where if a student had committed to a school, then other competing schools could not dangle offers, if it was beyond may want will that That industry rule has now been scrapped. Which means there are a lot of students who have even right now have not committed to a school where in prior years they would have done so by now. And so you're seeing a lot of bargaining and negotiation. Between families and schools go on far later in the year, then we would see in prior years and you know, some of the consultants for these families that I'd talk to, you know, are saying this could go on for another few months? Because I think there is a lot of uncertainty, and I think you know families. Not only are they trying to bargain lower tuition, they're also trying to decide whether they're going And there Kids to score whether they're adult Children are going to go to school. Given that they don't know if they're campus. Is there going to be open? They don't know what the experience is going to be like, so there is still a lot of uncertainty.

That's the point pretty much any media company. You can think of already offers streaming or will launch it soon. Well make way for yet. One more on Thursday Viacom is launching a nine dollars ninety nine cents a month streaming service called bt Bet plus. It's joint venture with Star writer producer and comedian Tyler Perry. Says African American audiences adopt on demand video services at a faster rate than any other market archy group. Viacom is relying on those demographics and on Tyler Perry Star power to attract subscribers still that ten dollars a month month price tag could pose a problem or to consider this last week apple announced that Apple TV plus will cost only four dollars ninety nine cents. It's a month about five dollars but worse than that for the competition apple will give a year subscription away for free to people who purchase new IPHONES IPADS or Mac Computers Pink magazine predicts that Apple will sell at least sixty five million new iphones alone by the end of the year half those customers could sign up for Apple. TV plus that's tens of millions of subscribers at launch and many or even most will either get hooked on Apple's new shows and keep the service after a year or just simply. I forget to kill the five bucks a month subscription once the fee kicks in well okay but can general interest dreamer compete with bt for black audiences hungry for better targeted content. That's the same question worth asking about Disney plus which at seven bucks a month is also cheaper than be easy z-plus as we've said before some industry observers and even executives like apple CEO Tim Cook and Netflix Chairman Reed Hastings are betting that TV watchers will subscribe to multiple streamers at some point however most viewers may well say enough is enough but it's far too soon to say of which one of these new services will win or whether even more new streamers by bt plus emerge.
