It's <Speech_Male> a thing it's just <Speech_Male> really versatile. <Speech_Male> So I have to say that's <Speech_Male> probably like my <Speech_Male> favorite thing <Speech_Male> in my arsenal. <SpeakerChange> <Silence> <Speech_Music_Male> Okay. <Speech_Music_Male> That's a <Speech_Music_Male> very bad choice. Yeah, <Silence> cool. Thank <Speech_Male> you. Love it. Yes, <Speech_Male> you're welcome. <Speech_Male> I'm glad that it <Speech_Male> meets with your expectations <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> and approval. <Silence> Oh yeah, <Speech_Male> sure. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Telephony_Male> <Silence> Do you think <Speech_Male> a hot dog is <Speech_Telephony_Male> a sandwich? <Speech_Telephony_Male> <Silence> <Speech_Male> No, I <Speech_Male> don't think of it as a <Speech_Male> sandwich. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I don't know why <Speech_Male> anybody would <Speech_Male> consider it <Speech_Male> as such. <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Well, actually, <Speech_Male> I said, well, you know what? <Speech_Male> This is <Speech_Male> a <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> tough, tough <Speech_Male> call you're a tough <Speech_Male> question you're asking <Speech_Male> me here <Speech_Male> because I can now <Speech_Male> that I think about it, <Silence> <Speech_Male> there are good sides <Speech_Male> on both sides of <Speech_Male> this issue. <Silence> And I'll <Speech_Male> be political here. <Silence> <SpeakerChange> It could <Speech_Male> be a salmon <Speech_Male> could not be a sandwich. <Silence> <Speech_Male> I don't know. <Speech_Male> In England, <Speech_Male> do they even eat <Speech_Male> hot dogs? <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Oh, kind of. <Speech_Telephony_Male> I've seen stance <Speech_Telephony_Male> where they sell. <Silence> I don't <Speech_Male> know, <Speech_Male> I don't know <Speech_Telephony_Male> what they're called, but certainly <Speech_Telephony_Male> not hot dog, <Speech_Telephony_Male> but <Speech_Telephony_Male> they're sort <Speech_Telephony_Male> of <Speech_Telephony_Male> the equivalent to it. <Silence> Yeah. <Silence> <Speech_Male> You guys probably eat it <Speech_Male> with like mayonnaise <Speech_Male> or <SpeakerChange> something. <Silence> <Speech_Male> I don't know. <Speech_Male> I don't know, I haven't even <Speech_Telephony_Male> tried it. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> I don't. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> used to love. I <Speech_Male> used to <SpeakerChange> love the hot <Speech_Male> dogs they'd sell on <Speech_Male> the streets in New York <Speech_Male> until I saw <Speech_Male> some expose <Speech_Male> about the <Speech_Male> rat, <Speech_Male> you know, <Speech_Male> stuff <Speech_Male> that's in there and <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> after that, <Speech_Male> I was like, I can't <Speech_Male> eat a hot <Speech_Male> dog without thinking <Speech_Male> about all this disgusting <Speech_Male> steps. <Speech_Male> So <Speech_Male> it ruined it for me. <Speech_Male> As much as I love <Speech_Male> the taste of hot dogs. <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Yeah. <Speech_Male> Well, anyway, <Speech_Telephony_Male> that's all we have for this <Speech_Telephony_Male> episode. It was great having <Speech_Telephony_Male> you here Darren talking about <Speech_Telephony_Male> your work as a <Speech_Telephony_Male> screenwriter, <Speech_Telephony_Male> composer, musician, <Speech_Telephony_Male> and everything <Speech_Telephony_Male> else has been amazing. <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Well, you guys thanks <Speech_Male> so much. And thanks <Speech_Male> for listening to me <Speech_Male> and, you know, and <Silence> playing <Speech_Male> off what we're doing. <Speech_Male> I had a great <Speech_Male> time. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Same with <Speech_Music_Male> me. <Speech_Male> Until <Speech_Male> next, go <Silence> on. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> This isn't <Speech_Male> live though, right? <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Oh no, it's <Speech_Male> not live, or anything. This <Speech_Telephony_Male> is like <Speech_Male> recorded. <Speech_Male> So it's <Speech_Male> gonna be really <Speech_Telephony_Male> later on throughout <Speech_Telephony_Male> the year. <Silence> <SpeakerChange> All right, <Speech_Male> you mean I could have <Speech_Male> said more foul <Speech_Male> words 'cause it <Speech_Male> wasn't <SpeakerChange> live. <Silence> <Speech_Male> I'm just kidding. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> <Silence> <Speech_Female> What? <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> I did say the F <Speech_Female> bomb without <Speech_Female> real wise you get. <Speech_Male> Yeah, well, <Speech_Male> it'll just <Speech_Male> come out like <Speech_Male> hip hop <Speech_Male> on the radio, <Speech_Male> right? "Is that? Okay, okay. So without a free test, like bananas movie, but it's a lot thicker than normal. It makes between us movie and a Frappuccino to get a Starbucks. But yeah. Okay. Does it have caffeine? No, I don't think it does have caffeine, but then I send me some. Yeah, I was gonna say, I need to hear his caffeine if there's caffeine in it. I'll drink it. While he could have been if you put it in that, you could be great. Well, so this is one of your favorite concoctions. Come on, caffeine. Will this thing without a preacher? Oh no, it's not my favorite. It's just something I made up. I just thought I'd ask you because just a bit of a laugh. Are we having a life here? Oh yeah. Have you guys ever seen extras that the show with Ricky Gervais? Oh yeah. Oh yeah, yeah. Right. English office, the first episode is like holy shit, the humor is way different than ours. Yeah, yeah, totally, totally. I love the original office was good, but x-rays. Especially when they had David Bowie on there. I don't know if you guys ever saw it, but it was just I don't think I went there for that, but okay. I wanted to wash the entire series of the English version. It was so dark. I thought our humor was dark. That's even bleaker. The English version. I mean, not kind of thing. I do a little bit of dark humor, but not too dark because there is a line that has not to be crossed, but yeah, I do like a bit of document location. Well, good. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, come on, I mean. The darker the better. Yeah. Right. What's the most useful thing you own?

"I've never actually used it, but I said, if anybody's ever going to invite me to an 80s dance party, here's my list of songs I do not want you to play. And of course, people look at that and be like, well, those are all my favorite songs. I can't not do that, but basic bitch. Yeah. But listening, what is this 96.9 what's the thing you're talking about? 96.9. It's a radio station that, you know, plays in general. Like if you're in your car and you tune in the 96.9 and, you know, it's something in my area. Okay. They play songs like the stalker song. Oh, they watch you by the building. Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, you know? I was like, can you play their good songs? Hello. 80s and 90s music. I love a lot of older music, but please don't overplay these songs. You're right, exactly. I love Queen, but I don't need to hear, you know, we will rock you for the 1 billionth time. I know, right? Yeah, it's so funny. I don't know how you can be hard to be like a DJ for these old oldies stations, just because they're playing the same songs. It's almost like top 40, but they just think it's a perpetual top 40 of the same songs that they play for 40 years. The craps prerecorded half the time. The way? That crap is pre recorded half the time. Well, I know. I know. 'cause I mean, come on, could you really get DJs to stay awake and say, oh, that was just dog on good like this, they always do like they sound like so excited that as if they've never heard a hobby for or what is that sweet dreams are made of these by the eurythmics, I don't know. Anyway, there's a lot of great music, especially great English music of the 80s, but I guess I rarely hear it on the radio these days. Yeah. Even to this day, they're still good and I do listen to them on a daily basis, like I'm probably, I have a flavors full of them and I just love them. It's just amazing. Well, and I think the stuff that came out of Manchester, you know, Joy Division and, you know, there's so much great stuff that came out in the early 80s, late 70s

"So you can take a look at some of my ten minute operas I've written, get a more of a feel for what repo the genetic opera is all about. And I want to mention was that repo the genetic opera is named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top 25 films of all time. And that was really great news because we always wanted to move our elevator pitch was that it was kind of like Rocky Horror picture show meets Blade Runner that that's what our movie was about. And then when we find ourselves in good company with the Rolling Stone top 25 films of all time, there's, of course, Rocky Horror, and there's also Blade Runner. And the original repo man. So we felt like, wow, we're pretty vindicated here that we've got a film that years later people all over the world on Saturday nights, dress up, show this film at midnight screenings. And just like rocky who are picture show, they sing along, they act along with the film and things they call shadow cast. And it's a blast. I go all over the world hanging out with people who watch repa the genetic opera and have watched it more times than I think I've ever seen in my entire life. Okay. Yeah, okay, that's great. So is there any other projects you're working on or about to work on eventually? Yes. The woman I mentioned, Stacy lane Wilson, who's my co writer in second age of Aquarius, and also the director of the same, we're writing a new movie, and it's about it's a horror film set in the 1980s and basically the antagonist to the whole thing is the decade of the 1980s and actually people are brought back to life from 2022 back in the 1980s, and they don't realize how crappy things we were back then. So it's fun, funny. It's gonna be very horrific. Let it gratuitous violence, but you know, that was the 1980s, at least here in the states, so yeah, we're excited about that. That'll be going to go on pre-production probably next

"Well, the high points I would say some of the high points are just going around the world and being able to record with different artists, musicians like Sarah brightman. I was out in Hamburg, recording some music that went to the end. Went to one of my films. You know, just all of these people are vino is an actor from Goodfellas and he's also a opera singer, so working with him and I mean, even Paris Hilton, who is on our film, was a great experience. Low point, low points are like when you have gigs on stage and fight happen outside and I've had it where somebody tried to burn down the stage in the middle of a playing. I guess you could call those some of my low points. But generally, there's not that many low points. If the low points are there, it usually was more like monetarily than it was from a point of view of feeling connected and feeling like I was doing what I wanted to do and what I was meant to do. Okay. Great. Guys, any more questions you want to ask? No, I mean, someday I want to Manchester. I want to go out back again. I watched this great movie 24 hour party people years ago about the whole Manchester sound. And now I want to go back there again. Okay. Okay, cool. Cool. Yeah. So that's about it. I'm really happy to be on here. If anybody wants to see our film and I hope everybody does, they can just go to second age of Aquarius dot com and its second spelled out SEC. Second age of Aquarius dot com. And from there you can stream it from any source of where you get your movies. I have a soundtrack of 1960s songs, the ones that I was mentioning that I wrote for this fictitious rockstar, I have that out. That's on iTunes and Amazon or anywhere else. And so I want everybody to know that second age of Aquarius is around. It just was released 6 weeks ago. And we're getting great response. And I want everybody in England to be able to see it as well. Oh, you're going to get plenty of those in your website for sure. Okay, good.

"So how have you been doing this for? Well, I've been doing it maybe about 30 years now. Played around in New York and in LA first starting off doing basically rock operas and then things that I called ten minute operas. We'd go to just rock clubs and in ten minutes, we'd tell an entire story through music. And it would just be funny 'cause we'd be in rock clubs and some of the things we'd be dressed up and 18th century white wigs because one of the stories takes place in us Austria in the 1700s and, you know, we just do all sorts of operas that had different places, different, you know, different stories somewhere serious somewhere somewhere heartfelt and in any event, they were in the gamut. And so yeah, I've been doing that for close to 30 years now. Wow. That must have been a very good year for you then. Yeah, it's really something that I, you know, that, to me, that's my kind of, this is my niche, you know? I love music. I love telling stories through music and somehow putting those together into either a stage show or a movie is just something I'm just fascinated with and fascinated at how you can connect emotion to words into the music itself to further a story. Cool. So guys, is there any questions? Do you want to ask Darren? What did you say? Is there anything else you wanted to do in life before this? Before this, rockstar, when I you know, but no, I mean, that's been my entire life is music. And writing. So I feel like I'm in my element to definitely doing what I want to do. Okay. Okay. Nice. And what do you like about being a composer and musician? What do I like about it? Yeah. You know, I was somebody once said that of all the art forms, they were saying that music was the funnest of the art forms. And I know that. So yeah, it's like the most visceral. And I mean, you know, I have fun doing different, even art, visual art, and whatever. But I don't know about the rest of you, but there's something about music that can put me in like a almost like a hypnotic state. It can change my state, change from where I've felt sick. I didn't want to go on stage, and now I'm on stage and boom. My physical, my mental state, my emotional state changes. So I guess what I love about music is just the fact that it can transform me almost in a heartbeat. From one state that I'm into another, and it's cathartic too. It's a real cathartic thing when you're writing music and let's say it's something sad inside of you, somebody who maybe my case family members passed away over the years. Writing music that can kind of reach that place that even words can't take you. I think it's very healing. Okay. Great. And for all your work as a composer, what have been the high and low points?

"And we made it into a huge film with Sarah brightman, the singers in it, and Anthony had your local countrymen and I like to call him sir Anthony head. And various other people in that movie. And that again is a music related film. It's actually an opera. It's from beginning to end. And basically, it involves people who buy their hearts and livers and other organs on credit. And when they can't pay up their monthly mortgage payments on their liver or kidney, for example, a repo man comes and takes him away and kills him. So that would serve our movie that we started. Eventually there's another movie that came after us called repo men, which has a curiously very similar premise to ours. But in any event, that's not a comedy musical this one is. So anyway, that said, that's my love, basically. That's music, writing, telling stories through music and film. Wow. That's great. Thank you. Don't mind still hope you don't mind me asking, but what's it like behind the scenes in the whole production side of making this movie? Yeah, when it's like yeah, it's funny because, you know, just like anything else, there's the behind the scenes. What do they say about like if you want good legislation and good sausage, you don't want to watch either ones being made. Similar with you want good movies and you want good sausage. You don't want to watch them being made behind the scenes. Some of it's pretty damn boring. But it is an interesting thing to put something that I'm sure you guys could relate. Putting something that's in your head that just was this German of an idea and really giving birth to it and basically seeing how other human beings say their lines sing something, do things that you never even expected was going to happen. And now you have this great 3D living thing in front of you that just is based, you know, full blown from the head of Zeus somewhere, but came out into something that's way better than I ever anticipated it. So being behind the scenes in movies can be just a fantastic experience. Okay. That's very interesting. Thank you. Any time.

"Hello, welcome to the loni show. I'm your host, Jamie alona. And then there's episode I have brought on regular Faye and loads more if they can make it. If not, that's cool. It'll chill. Anyway, as for our guest, he's from Los Angeles. He is a screenwriter composer and musician. And among other things, we're going to talk to him about his new film, the second age of Aquarius. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Darren Smith. Thank you. Thank you for having me on the show. Anytime. So, how's life? So well, how's life? Has life. That's pretty good. I'm out in LA right now. It's we're having a cold spell like as you could call it. It's like 70° right now. Oh, okay. That's fair night. Oh, okay. Cool. I wouldn't be talking right now for 70°C. That would be a nightmare. Yeah. What about all of the regulators joined in? Hey, Eric, how are you doing? I'm doing great. How are you? All doing? Fabulous. So Darren, tell us more about this movie you just, you've been working on. Sure. Our kids got the second age of Aquarius and basically building this kind of a sci-fi rock and roll RomCom. And so based on a short story I did with Stacy lane Wilson, who's also a director in the show. And basically, it kind of posits this idea if you could bring your favorite musician back to life. Would you and could you get rid of them? And so basically the whole story is about somebody in 2022 who basically had recreates through some weird science algorithm, their favorite dead rockstar, the fictitious person named Russell Aquarius who was supposed to have died on stage in 1970. And she recreates him and basically she has kind of a love affair with him, but now she can't get rid of him out of her house. So it's kind of, I wrote the music, which is to show that this guy wrestle Aquarius is supposed to have been a real rockstar who had hits throughout 1967 through 1970. So through this movie, I wrote all the music I wrote all his quote unquote hits. I like to call him unreleased hits. I wrote them, performed them, did them all on basically old technology late 60s wield a real recordings using old 1962 guitars and so forth so that it would sound exactly sound that it came out in the late 60s. So if that's what this film is about, it's basically kind of like, I don't know, weird science meets this is spinal tap. And we're having a great time. It's available all over the UK. It's on Amazon UK. iTunes various other streaming platforms. Wow, okay. That's great. Go out to hear it. Well, thanks. Yeah, we got some great actors who did this and you know, this is a big project for me. I generally, when I do feel projects, because I really am basically a composer musician at heart. All my music thing, all my film projects have music as its core. Often with comedy as well. And my major project that I'm most known for is called repo, the genetic opera, that was done as a film originated as an off Broadway stage show in New York and LA.

"This is an animal radio news update. And I'm Laurie Brooks, there's another big buyout planned in the world of pet food. General Mills says it has agreed to buy out Blue Buffalo pet products for about 8 billion dollars. General Mills will be paying about 40 bucks a share for Blue Buffalo, which sells dog and cat foods under brands like maybe you've heard blue life protection formula, blue wilderness and blue basics, anyhow the deal has been approved by both companies, boards of directors and such, but it does still need to be approved by government regulators and this deal comes as global food giants of all kinds are out there snapping up makers of natural and organic pet products, which are really outpacing other brands when it comes to growth. Well, now, more and more people with multiple pets are getting together. Dating or moving in together, pet people are attracted to each other. But everyone needs to be aware of how to introduce pets properly. Experts say, just like when your pet first met your new significant other, same thing. Plan to make the meet and greet of each of your pets on neutral territory, which is a whole lot easier to do with dogs, right? Than it is with cats. With dogs, of course, you can easily take them for a walk, but one of the biggest issues that arises when merging pet households is making sure that all the animals get along. So start off on the right foot, make it neutral territory to begin with. Perhaps the biggest challenge is when one pet is moving into another pet's home, try to manage it in that case so that at least for a few weeks, the pet who lived there first gets the majority of the space, and don't move that pet's toys or food bowls or even their bedding until that adjustment period is over. There is no magic number of days or weeks, but just make sure that you know the signs of potential conflict, especially for dogs. Things to look out for with dogs include when they lower their tail or they start licking their lips or turning their head away or even cowering. And if you see a fight brewing between cats, separate them before it gets out of hand. Finally, Malcolm Alexander, he spent nearly four decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. Fortunately though the innocence project worked on Malcolm's case and he got the proof needed to prove his innocence, but only after spending 38 years behind bars. Now, however, when he left prison, mister Malcolm Alexander was not alone. In fact, the day after he was freed, he got to reunite with the dog that he had raised behind bars. The dog was a 9 month old puppy, her name is innocent for he called her in for short. And as a well behaved inmate, mister Alexander was allowed to have innocent with him as a companion animal in prison as part of a special program which allowed the dog to even go to his prison work sites with him. He's just happy to have innocent with him. I'm Lori Brooks. Get more breaking animal news anytime at animal radio dot com. This has been an animal radio news update. Get more at animal radio dot com. Let's talk about dog behavior. Dogs need attention, they need your attention. It doesn't matter if it's positive attention or negative attention. If you're giving your dog attention, he thinks you're rewarding him. The best way to teach your dog how to behave is to only give him affection and attention when he's doing the right thing. The thing that he should be doing, ignoring your dog and taking attention away from him is powerful. Turning and walking away, turning your back on him, totally ignoring him. Let's say you bring your dog in from the street and you want to clean his paws with a towel. You get him to go down, and when you start to clean his paws, he starts moving around and fidgeting and you start getting frustrated. So you start talking to him. Lay still. Well, the more frustrated you get, the more you try to get him to lay there and let you clean his paws, the more he's going to get excited and jump around. So what's the answer? As soon as he starts to get excited, you just stand up quickly and stare off into space. Or walk away into the house and leave him there for a couple minutes. You might have to do it over and over again, but eventually he's going to get the message that if he asks that way, you're not going to pay any attention to him. You're not going to touch him. He'll start to realize that the bad behavior is not working anymore. And when your dog gets the idea that you want him to lay still. Or you want him to just lie down when people come over and ring the doorbell. He's going to do it because your dog wants to please you. And he wants to be with you. It's important to understand that dogs are very sensitive to you. Your body language. What you're doing, where are you looking? How are you carrying yourself? People get into trouble because they want their dogs to be there for them. When they want them there, then they want their dogs to do a disappearing act when they don't want them there. When they're not in the mood. They want to be able to flick the dog on like a light switch. Once you understand how dogs think, how they communicate what their body language means. You can teach them just about anything. How to go to the bathroom outside, how to heal, sit, stay, how to behave when people come over to the house. The key to it all is patience, calm leadership, and total consistency. So that your dog's able to learn the rules. Because dogs need rules. Doing that will make your dot com and fun to be around. And don't forget they need plenty of exercise. Get more tips and animal radio dot com. You're listening to animal radio. If you missed any part of today's show, visit us at animal radio dot com or download the animal radio app for iPhone and Android. It is animal radio. We love our pets and we're very concerned about what they ingest, what they eat. And Lori just reported that General Mills bought Blue Buffalo for $8 billion holy moly. There's really only a handful of companies that own all of these brands of food. You know, you go there, you go to the store and you look and you say, wow, how do I make a selection? Here's an amazing selection and variety, but really there's only about three or four major brands and they all source their foods from the same places. You might remember the melamine contamination many years ago. That's when it became really evident. That all of these foods are being sourced from the same place and that it's all about branding for the companies. I want you to think that you're getting some special healthy food. But it's just all the same crap. You know who we have back on the show right now is Jacqueline Bowen. She's the executive director for the clean label project. And she really woke me up to this whole problem a few months ago. When they tested 99 pet foods and found everything from arsenic and heavy metals in the food and of course he's on top of this whole thing that's going on with the pentobarbital in food. Hi, welcome back, Jacqueline. Thank you so much for having me. So for listeners that are just tuning in this week that don't understand how pentobarbital ends up in their food and their cats or dogs food. How does this happen? Well, it's really interesting because right now the FDA still has still not released the results of their investigation. One possible way is through contaminated ingredients. That one thing that we could possibly see is that the ingredients came from a rendered animal facility where essentially animals that had been euthanized were ended up ended up in the protein supply chain and were ultimately used in the creation of these finished products. Okay, so this is a company a big company smuckers, which we know for their jams and jellies. They own how many pet foods do they have? Oh, many, I know at least in terms of part of the recall, I know that both Roy was recalled as well as Skippy as well as, of course, gravy train in kibbles and bits. And that's.

"It's been someone heartening If you are Tom Goldman thanks so much You're welcome Scott You're listening to weekend edition from NPR news We have an affinity for animal stories on this program also for BJ leaderman who does our theme music And today we celebrate methuselah methuselah is an Australian lungfish who resides at the California Academy of Sciences steinhart aquarium in San Francisco and she is over 90 years of age Now that somewhat younger than her namesake one of nose ancestors who it is said lived to be 969 years old but this formidable lungfish is believed to be the most senior living fish in any aquarium or zoo in the United States and possibly the world Charles delby curator at the Steiner art aquarium joins us now Mister delby thanks so much for being with us It's my pleasure Scott Thank you for speaking with me today Carlos about methuselah Well I'm methuselah is an Australian lungfish that the steinhardt aquarium acquired back in 1938 The detail is a little fuzzy about how we actually acquired her whether she was collected or who supplied her to us And she's recited here ever since under our careful watch of our biologists for all those years I mean what's she like Do you notice a personality Of course She's like a basically like a little puppy dog She's very mellow She can be a little feisty you know They are a slow moving fish but they can't have bursts of speed and she can't jump out of her tank If she really wants to or she's startled but she's very gentle and very slow moving and very easily handled I have read she likes figs and belly robes which sounds like a good combination by the way It does I like those things myself but she is a bit picky though she won't eat any canned figs or any figs that are not in season three for her That's a real San Francisco lungfish isn't it Yeah Yes it is Farm to table of figs How long do lungfish in captivity live Well under our care we don't really know for sure because clearly she's the oldest It was another lungfish Australian lungfish at the shedd aquarium in Chicago named granddad who passed away a few years ago and he was in their care for 84 years So that makes ours now the oldest in a collection in the United States And most likely in the world There is a research group in Australia and they are actually at dating the age of lungfish using their DNA So we are going to be participating with them by sending samples of our animals and by plotting these out on a graph or be able to tell project in the future what the age of a certain lung fish is Wow And do I have this right lungfish can breathe out of water Yes a hence their name They actually have these rudimentary lungs It's a very very primitive fish And so they actually gulp air from the surface They're an air breather So they need to come up to the top to go to air Oh my word How often do they do that They do that you know every hour or so What can we learn from the things that do you think I mean I like the diet Yeah and patients I think probably is another thing And take things slow take things easily As I said this research project we're working on we're trying to find out how all these animals can actually be How can they get So this kind of research helps us to learn more about them and also who knows Maybe they may unlock the secrets of longevity for ourselves Charles del bake is curator at the starting herit.

Wet Notes - 9-13-21

"This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio from monday september thirteenth. Two thousand twenty one first up today is in another idea for diving with a purpose in one of the most recent newsletters from the coral restoration foundation the coral chronicles. There was a report that cr f. is teaming up with the atlantis. Dive resort in douma getty to offer a unique opportunity to participate in a week long program at the result in helping them build and maintain the largest coral nursery endowing. Actually the town where. Atlantis is located. The program is being sponsored by the coral restoration foundation. The loveland living planet aquarium and the meat foundation. The program runs from september twenty fourth to october. First two thousand twenty two there are planned educational sessions on coral ecology along with restoration efforts and techniques. You also conduct restoration. Dives along with some fun dies. This sounds really fascinating. One of the pictures into newsletter showed the table coral at apo island. I vividly remember that area when we dove air in two thousand nineteen there wasn't any pricing available in the article and you'll have to contact the hotel directly if you have the time and desire to dive with a purpose check out this program and market on your calendar. Long time ago. Donna and i lived in hawaii that was in the mid nineteen eighties. At that time we got to experience. What was probably one of the first while in walls in honolulu. If you're not familiar with wilem walls you can check them out. The wall was a large mural of the humpback whale on the side of a building near waikiki. It was quite impressive. Well it might not be a while and wall but if you happen to be near brant rock in mansfield massachusetts you can catch a the view of a mural of a large shark painted on the side of an old restaurant according to wicked local dot com. The mural was painted by a local artist. Shane leonard. Shane was a former football player at boston college. Who has a passion for painting and a passion for sharks. Now the muros on the side of the former arthur and patch restaurant that closed back in two thousand fifteen. The shark faces divers as they head down ocean street which is a one way street. So you can't miss it say. Shane says he likes the way shark. Show emotion. the photo is pretty impressive. there's no guarantee that the building won't be torn down. Now that is unoccupied but according to shane. Even if it doesn't survive it was worth doing so if you happen to be near mansfield mass check out the shark mural on ocean street about a month ago. Patio wear foundation announced their fourth annual aware week. Now this year it will run from september. Eighteenth through september twenty six two thousand and twenty one the whole idea behind aware week is to empower the global dive community to lead or take part in conservation activities in courses focused on local action for global impact in the past aware has focused on two elements marine debris and vulnerable marine species this year in concert with patties blueprint for ocean action. They're adding three more components. Climate change marine protected areas and coral reefs. Some of the ways. That dive shops can participate or by conducting aware classes like dive against debris coral conservation or the aware specialty. Also like us. You can become a one hundred percent aware dive centre where you provide a monthly contribution in support of the patty certifications you award. We are very proud to be one hundred percent aware. But here's something that. Patty aware foundation needs to work on. We need more notice as to win. Aware week is happening. I wasn't sure what was happening this year and our calendar filled up and we weren't able to get things scheduled as i mentioned at the top of the show. We've already created are twenty twenty two calendar and it would be nice to know when aware week twenty twenty two is happening. I also mentioned at the top to show that the re photo contest results were in and that i didn't win while scuba diving magazine. Magazine's two thousand and twenty one through the lens contest is also complete. The winners were recently released at scuba diving. Dot com and the photos will be revealed in september october special photo issue. They received one thousand seven hundred and nineteen photos from around the world. The contest categories included behavior compact camera macro and wide angle. The entries were judged on beauty originality and unique encounters. I check them out and they are spectacular. I only wish. I had the talent impatience to do that kind of work. Now if you wanna get a jump onto twenty twenty two contests they will start accepting entries january third two thousand twenty two and you can submit your photos through may thirty first two thousand and twenty two and finally we recently received our two thousand twenty two aqualung buyer's guide along with information on all the new products coming down from aqualung apex. So i thought. I'd give you a little preview on what's on the horizon. I from aqualung. They are releasing a new regulator the helix pro and the helix it looks like the helix pro is a mid range regular and i think it's replacing their core. It is a balanced first and second stage in his environmentally sealed with four low pressure ports and two high pressure ports. It was built for cold water and has the automatic closure device or a cd. lower end. helix is not environmentally sealed. And it doesn't have a cd and it's designed for warmer water. Also coming out in two thousand and twenty two is their new. Aqua fluck aqua flex men and aqua flex woman wetsuits. I think it's a redesign of their tried and true. Aqua flex line they also have a two millimeter. Free flex wetsuit now. The i one hundred computers going to come in a new color yellow and speaking of colors. They've added a number of different colors to various products including something called sand petrol red and orange as for eight packs. They also have a new regulator the xl four osha and it is billed as a totally sustainable regulator bay from post consumer waste it comes in grey or mint with some great etching. On the first stage. I suspect it's just like the xl four plus being an overbalanced diaphragm regulator with two hp and four l. p. ports. It looks pretty. Sharp and apex is releasing a new dive computer to the sx. It will be program can program up to six gases and monitor six transmitters. The has a titanium basil making it lightweight endurable but also has a color display. There's something more that require. Some more research It says it has in oh to analyze or onboard. But no to sell gotta check that out a little bit. There's a lot more out there and over time. I'll give you more updates from both aqualung and apex. Well that wraps up wet notes. Here on scuba shock. Radio for monday september thirteenth. Two thousand twenty one

"This is wet. Notes here on scooby. Shock radio for may six two thousand and twenty one. I want to start off today with a story. That is a bit of personal meaning to me. And that's a story about what some recreational divers found while diving out in hawaii. Awful and i. Now i have quite a few dives out there. Awful and i and these divers found some unexploded world war two era ordinance. They found two bombs. One was at seventy four feet and the other one was at ninety four feet. The divers immediately notified to hawaii division of aquatic research. Who went out to investigate it and confirmed it was unexploded ordinance the report indicated that the munitions were about three hundred yards offshore. The exact location wasn't disclosed when but it may be in the area of the first and second cathedrals again personal for me. Because i have probably about at least twenty. Five dives onto cathedrals as of now. There aren't any more updates and there was no mention on the divers website and they run many charters out to the site. Let's see where this goes. I recently checked out the four ocean blog to see if there was anything of interest will there was a lot but one thing did pique. My interest for ocean occasionally does a blog on plastics around the world. And that's where they identify articles or stories that talk about the plastic crisis facing the world. Now one article was from interesting engineering and it was written by deora as deamer and this was about plastic eating mushrooms. Yes certain types of fungi can ingest and eat plastic apparently in two thousand eleven some yale researchers discovered rare mushroom in the amazon forest and it was able to digest and break down plastics. One of the scenarios suggest that these plastic eating mushrooms could be placed at the bottom of landfills interesting over the years. There have been various successful experiments. So what's the holdup perhaps speed. It takes times for the mushrooms to eat and digest the plastic and there's also competition for other investment now. Here's a bit of disturbing news that i saw from dima apparently there's going to be a virtual meeting of the florida fish and wildlife conservation commission or dfw see on may twelfth and thirteenth one of the topics on may twelfth. I think it is a two. Our discussion is to review and update the goliath grouper. Now this review is to look at if they should allow a limited highly. Regulated harvest of the goliath grouper. Why well that's a really good question now if you go out to the f. w. website you'll be able to find a detailed Presentation on this review. Even if the science holds up and supports the harvest. I would have to ask if the enforcement is of a regulated harvest. Dean feels that. The economic value of the goliath grouper are better served without any harvest and continue the protection they currently have. Sos thousand island. Well what's that all about. Well for those of you are familiar with the saint lawrence seaway in the thousand island region. Sos stands for save ontario shipwreck thousand island chapter now. This was reported in scuba news. Sos thousand island wants to create an artificial reef off of brockville in canada. Why are they making such a bold proposal. Were there are three main objectives. I an artificial reef will reduce the pressure on the local historic wooden shipwrecks and then second. An artificial reef can preserve the maritime history of ships that had been destined for scrap and finally this effort will assist the local aquarium in promoting maritime heritage and discovery. This is still a long way off but there is some good news in that day of identified a ship that could be used and it is the former canadian coast. Guard vessel the c. c. g. s. mont. Mandy now this ship was built in one thousand nine hundred sixty three and it was decommissioned and sold in nineteen ninety nine. Let's see where this one goes. Well here's something that. I just saw from patty. I think it was on the patty pro blog. Patty women's dive day. Two thousand and twenty one is coming and the tagline on the blog was celebrate the connection between mandy and the ocean. This year's patty women's dive day is july seventeenth 2021. This event started six years ago in two thousand and fifteen and it was started as a way to encourage more female participation in sport scuba diving to date there have been over four thousand patty women's dive day events in over one hundred countries. I'm sure last year was a little tough to get events planned and executed safely this year. More places are opening and travel is picking up. Everyone can participate be on the lookout for patty women's dive day event in your local area or maybe even travel to a nice destination to participate and finally today. I thought i'd give everyone and update on traveling. To the bahamas. As of may first the bahamas ministry of health has released new guidelines for entry departure. I if you are fully vaccinated for covid nineteen that's two weeks from your final. Does you don't need a covid. Nineteen tests prior to entry. Nor do you need to fill out the daily health questionnaire or get a covert test. After your fifth day on the island. You'll still need to apply for the bahamas. Health visa prior to entry. And you still need to get a covert test before travelling back to the united states. Now we're heading to nassau a may twenty six th so these changes make things a whole lot simpler. Hopefully more countries will open up. Like the bahamas. Well that's it for wet notes on may six two thousand and twenty one here on scuba shack radio

"This is wet notes for april twenty third. Two thousand twenty one here on scuba shack radio. I up just after i recorded. The last episode president biden released his two thousand and twenty two budget. Well if you're a fan of the national oceanic and atmospheric administration or noah. You'll be happy in the budget. Proposal released on april ninth. The president proposed a record budget of six point. Nine billion dollars for knowing now. How does that compare well. This year knows budget is four point. Six billion wow. that's big increase. This budget really supports taking action. On climate change protecting marine mammals the ocean great lakes and coastal communities. If you recall the previous administration has proposed cutting knows budget only to have it restored by congress. Now this is just a first step in the budget proposal. It has a long way to go to get congressional approval. But i think it's a very good first step now. Here's something that's really interesting. I read this in the cayman compass online. It's about a grand cayman. Northside family found a message in a bottle. Yeah on easter. i think it was. The family was out walking on a remote part of the island. A place called the parrot sanctuary. I think this is on the east end. Well that's where patricia dacosta her family recovered an emerald colored bottle with a handwritten message inside the note said thrown into the ocean on six december. Two thousand and seventeen somewhere between the bahamas and florida. If you find this drop us a line and let us know where it ended up. Signed by darren and shannon from evansville illinois and it gave them their email address so patricia them with the news and now darrin shannon are planning to visit grand cayman at some point as for the bottle. The dacosta family's planning to put their own note in the same bottle and send it back out to see what an incredible journey. It's here the second quarter edition of the journal of diving history magazine. It arrived in the mail just after the last show. This latest additions cover story was written by chris. Cole and it is about the divers who worked on the edgewater disaster. It was one of the worst maritime disasters in us history. I'll leave it at that and you can do some of your own research but it was a really interesting article. There's also an interview in the edition. Done by michael newdow with dick rakowski and he's dubbed. The father of nighthawks again. Some really interesting stuff. I highly recommend that you take a look at the historical diving. Society's website if you become a member you'll get the journal mail to you every quarter a pleasant surprise in your mailbox. I received an email from a friend a few weeks ago with the subject line serenity so who can't use a little serenity how about serenity now well it turns out that my friend was asked by our son to watch him cameras for a school project. These live cams were from the monterey bay aquarium so i went to the link and it took me to their landing page for nine different cameras. I'm not going to list them all right now. But you can peek. In on their penguins. Sea otters were moon jellies. There's even a camera for monterey bay itself personally. I like to observe my sealife while diving but these live cams from monterey bay aquarium can fill in and provide that little bit of serenity. Now here's something interesting. That came in from shearwater. You know the makers of the dive computers. They have a contest. It's going to be starting up. In may called the spring shopping spree and the winner will get four thousand nine hundred ninety nine dollars shopping spree at the dive shop of their choice. And here's how it works if you purchase the shearwater in april or if you buy one in may you can register for the contest with their online portal with a proof of purchase. But you don't have to buy a computer to participate. You also be able to register by completing a short fifty word essay on why you like shearwater computers. The lucky winner will be selected at the end of may. And it's another great way to support your local dive shot. Thanks your water for doing this. And finally there was a short article from patty on april twentieth about their meeting with the maldivian government to confirm the protection for sharks. There was some speculation out there that the maldivian government might be lifting the shark fishing ban in their countries waters. Well this can't be good over ten years ago. Patty along with others helped to establish this current protection so the patty staff met with the moldavian ministry of fisheries marine reserves and agriculture's lead zaha wahid. Well here's some good news here at the meeting minister while he said that they were committed to sustainable and responsible management on april twentieth the ministry released a statement that said the maldives does not intend to permit a targeted shark. Fishing in the mouth. These great job. Patty in great job maldives for protecting these critical apex predators. Well that's it for wet notes. For

"In the break about how each of US experiences anxiety. And it's one of those things that you think, and I've gotten this because I've spoken all over the world as a mental health experts and that you get anxious, like every day because anxiety is on. Maybe we can come up with a good definition here. But anxiety is just the unknown. In life. And what do we It is the feeling when we become aware of how much we don't know. Exactly. And That's an existence that until we get good at predicting the future, which I'm gonna happen. We're gonna have to live with anxiety not knowing right? And that's why there are some professionals. Whether it be teachers. Health care providers are doctors who work in certain places where they feel they may You know, catch something or get called it or whatever it is, And so then it's producing more and more anxiety because of the unknown. But there's since that's a basic natural part of existence that we live with the unknown. One of my favorite questions is now what Okay. What can we do when we don't have the answers Exactly when you don't We like to depend on certain things because they give us the illusion of security. I've always laughed that we call Investing in stocks. We call them securities. It's so ridiculous, but it's one of those things where we use the word to try and shape reality. And oh, yeah, these air security. There's so insecure, insecure, but we put our security hopes in so many things that simply cannot deliver. We're doing it because we want to know the unknown. We want something. What can I depend on when and that's why the pandemic has been so incredibly taxing to all of us is because it's taken away so many things, right? I can't even depend on whether the restaurant down the street is open. Right can depend on whether my school kids gonna go to school or not, And then the anxiety that I do want to clarify the anxiety. We're referring to its normal Felt anxiety Normal's relative, But I'm talking about the stresses. You know, situations that cause us to have anxious thoughts and and beat, you know, producing anxiety. However, we do know clinically in the clinical mental world. There is generalized anxiety. That's a big word, but there's a clinical anxiety. That's something different right now. We're just talking about You know, going back to school going toe work on Monday. You know those type of things that produce a little bit of anxiety and stress. Those are normal. And it all comes down to how we respond. 4487207 50 we want to hear from you. How are you feeling? The anxiety of the times. What we want to do is help people in that moment in that now what moment I love how you said it. What do I do when I don't have the answers, But I still have to act. Right. Stop the move, still have to move. Movement is life still have to move. I still have to act. But where and how, and it's so difficult, I just can't imagine. I'll be honest, I just can't imagine being a 15 year old. Where I My whole life is online. But it's weird because before this, my parents were always on me about too much screen time. Exactly. And now I'm have to have tons of screen time just to do school. But now I am I going to school and I've heard there are a lot of schools were set up where they're still doing it online. They're just in class together, so they're still the same experience. Not interacting because you got to keep the physical distance. And it's hard for for I think of teachers and everyone in that academia world. I'm not only talking about teachers, but professors in college and different things like that. That maybe we're not. You know, computer savvy your screen seven and how to. They've had to read like they didn't go to school for that. You know, they didn't learn that way. And so now they have to teach something in the vics what they knew, But in a very foreign way, All of this is foreign. We could talking about us living in a shared experience. Uh, you know the work that I do at the clubhouse, which was, you know an after school program, where they could play basketball and and skate and all kinds of field trips and activity. I went to an online my field trip was a virtual tour to the Georgia Aquarium. Like who likes that? You know, I didn't like it. Of course, the students I was working with what was like this is a joke. So how do we reinvent ourselves? How do we keep moving? Um But at the same time taking care of ourselves so that we're calm as we're helping others speak. Um so here's a little thing. Going back to. We had a collar right up on the show to asked about how do I call my wife's anxiety, which you don't but that doesn't mean you cannot have an influence. The first step to having an influence is giving up control right? Because control is not influence control is dictating and moving influence is helping people make decisions for themselves..
