He probably had a lot of debt from before that made some money and spend it on some shit and now and then he could get one after you buy a house. Whatever you making this income. You assume that you're going to keep that income going and then but you didn't ask the producers. How far did your precarity right. Why Can't We Breathe Underwater?

"Can't we breathe underwater I haven't met everybody but everyone that I have met has not been able to breathe underwater, except for Aquaman of course, and it's a good question when you think about it. Because water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen right well, it goes in the chemicals. There's one thing we need to remember. Though about those chemicals, it's that once they react. In certain ways, they form compounds that are often nothing like their original elements think of to solo artists from different bands, and they get together, and they make an album that sounds. Sounds nothing like the original music for example. If you react carbon, hydrogen and oxygen together one way you get glucose, but if you react them together another way you get vinegar, and if you react to them yet another way you get fat, and if you react them yet, another way you get ethanol and glucose, fat, ethanol and vinegar are nothing like each other, but they're all made from the same elements in the case of hydrogen and Oxygen Gas. You react them together. One way you get liquid water and the reason we can't breathe. Liquid water is because the oxygen used to make water is bound to two hydrogen. and. We can't breathe that resulting liquid. The oxygen that fish breathe is not the oxygen that's in H.. Two O. Instead, the fish are breathing oa-to oxygen gas and nats dissolved in that water. Many different gases dissolve in liquids, and we can see an example of this all the time with carbonated beverages in knees beverages. There's so much carbon dioxide gas dissolved in the water that it rushes out in the. The form of bubbles fish breathe that dissolved oxygen out of the water, using their gills, and it turns out that extracting the oxygen. Isn't that easy? Air Has something like twenty times more oxygen in it than the same volume of water, plus let's remember that water is a lot heavier and thicker than air, so it takes a lot more work to move it around the main reason that Gilles work. Work for fish is the fact that fish are cold blooded. This reduces their oxygen demands tremendously warm, blooded animals like Wales breathe air like people do because it would be hard to extract oxygen using kills human beings can't breathe underwater because our lungs don't have enough surface area to absorb enough oxygen from water in the lining of our lungs is adapted to handle air instead of water. However, there have. have been experiments with humans breathing other liquids like fluorocarbons, fluorocarbons can dissolve enough oxygen, and our lungs can draw that oxygen out. It's just that first breath where you suck in the fluorocarbons and the enter your lungs. That is not very pleasant, but it is possible and look. Please nobody out there. Try to breathe underwater, because unless you're an extraordinary person or maybe a mutant. You're probably going to drown.

Developing long duration energy storage

"What a year it's shaping up to be for. Storage manufacturing has taken a hit and some projects are getting delayed for obvious reasons Our analysts that would mackenzie say that. The coronavirus crisis will trim twenty twenty forecasts for Battery Installations. Globally by almost twenty percent. But they still expect it to be a record year and the projects that caught our eye are not going to get built this year but they do show the strength and resiliency of this market a few examples here. A coal plant in North Dakota is going to be replaced. In part with a one acre battery array that uses a new technology capable of discharging for a hundred and fifty hours. That's more than thirty times longer than a lithium ion batteries. The Electric Utility in Hawaii just awarded contracts for sixteen projects that add up to more than three gigawatt hours of storage and those will replace an oil fired. Coal-fired Power Plant in California Southern California Edison signed contracts for seven hundred seventy megawatts of batteries. Many of them paired with solar projects to replace aging gas plants plus in China more hybrid wind solar and battery plants are starting to emerge and wood. Mackenzie expects rapid growth in batteries within China in the coming years. It's the country will lead Asia. This lead Dan Foley who would McKenzie's head of energy storage to proclaim to our journalist at Green Tech Media The utility energy storage market is blowing through milestones faster than we can report them for example those Sei projects are together worth two hundred megawatts more than the entire twenty nineteen market says Fin Foley. So let's go through these. I think we should focus on the bright shiny objects I. What do we know about this form? Energy Project Catherine mentioned this at the end of a recent show so catherine what is Great River Energy who is form energy and what kind of battery could emerge from. This relationship is a great river. Energy is the largest generation and transmission co-op and what that means is it generates and provides power under long-term contracts to a bunch of member. Co Ops like twenty eight member Co ops and this is how a lot of the COP system is formed in the US where they're small co ops that are often serving rural communities. They are very much about keeping costs low for their customers and customers. Own the CO OPS. They are customer owners but then they sign up for long term agreements with these GMT providers. Because it does save the money in the long run and a lot of these. Gmt providers we've seen have these long term contracts For old coal plants and so great river energy is one of those GM GMT's and they made a decision a while back to shut down coal a coal plant call strip and they have been thinking about. How are we going to backfill it? And what are we going to use to do that? And so they've certainly been deploying a lot of renewables and they just recently entered into this agreement with Form Energy and forum is a start up Led by Matteo Harm. Yo who came out of TUSLA. He was the energy storage guru there yet mingchang. Who's an MIT professor? Who has been really another brains behind storage and Ted Wiley who co-founded Aquaman and energy storage company and there are a couple of other. Mit folks. Billy Woodford and Marco Ferrara and there. It's just a team of incredible minds. Who decided to try to calm at storage by thinking about it it as potentially being able to replace all of these Uncaught non cost effective coal plants and so their technology seeks to be super cheap long-duration Nontoxic something you would find everywhere to be able to you know. Put together a type of a flow battery that could just replace the footprint of any fossil fuel plant so that is their goal. And that's what a great river energy has decided to take a bet on. Let's talk about the tech first and then the rural cooperatives piece second jigger. This is a battery. We don't know much about but they call it an aqueous air battery. What does that mean well? Basically in it uses more abundant materials. Because what you find is as that the metals wondering yeah we'll water but also the metals they're using or quite Easy to find and so it's aluminum zinc magnesium etc right. And so so what you find is that they have this ability to use low-cost materials right and they're able to Store lots of energy so when you think about this ad. Matteo talks about this in his interview The way that Lithium. Ion Batteries work is that you can actually charged quickly and discharged quickly but at the same time basically to charge it as to discharge it. And so what you find. Is that these batteries It's around like sort of being able to constrict the nozzle and only making it one megawatt right because you can imagine that you could make a lithium ion battery that's a hundred megawatts incised but only dispatch one megawatt at a time and then make it last one hundred fifty hours now. The problem with that those. It's a super expensive way to get one hundred fifty hour battery whereas this is a much cheaper way. It's it's similar to sort of Etienne redux batteries and others were the basically have this. The fluid that that holds the charge can be expanded at a very low cost. The fuel cell that converts that fluid into energy that's utilized is the expensive

Joker, Commentary

"Going to be a podcast her everyone laughed at me well no one's laughing now and Stewart and this is the host who always has negative thoughts Jacob joker a movie that I could not believe have the height around it that it did I can't recall the last time a superhero film was Ben so polarizing I mean people worried about shootings in theaters people saying Joaquin deserves an Oscar yeah it was all over the place coming out of Toronto Oh this is going to be the film of the year it's going to get all the Oscars and then Todd Phillips director opens his mouth and got a lot of backlash for what he thought we're comedy was these days yet all the place with this film that said I got to say this one took me by surprise I assumed that DC was in free fall. I mean we have all commented on how their output has been inconsistent can we all agree at best putting it nicely right that they have not had the scene unless nece that the Marvel Universe has been able to bestow on all of their works when I heard they were doing a one off joker movie I was like that sounds like a bad idea story are you getting those marvel paycheck saying they're in free fall I mean wonder woman made one of a billion dollars off man made a billion dollars what kind of free was that will somebody say well I don't care what the hardcore people think the truth of the matter is a lot of their movies have stone DOC and they've not consistent the fact that we have a one of joker movie this joker that we're told will never appear with Batman what the hell are they doing marvel would never do that is what I guess I would say sure but I don't mind that like what is the best spider man film Spiderman entered the spider verse like that is not connection to the m. c. you or what Sony is doing with Tom Allen's spider manoeuvres etta any of that so I don't mind a one off if you can just pull off a good movie I don't care if it's in any kind of continuity villain standalone movies making a Superhero movie without a superhero has not been something I've thought has worked before I mean Holly Aries cat-woman Tom Hardy thinom they could never figure out how to do sinister of six I mean you could even probably throw the Star Wars prequels into that concept having the super villain story told without a counterpoint of heroism where's our entry point who are we supposed to be with and what are they going to accomplish the you mentioned marvel I think that DC here is taking a cue from Marvel's newest acquisition Fox Todd Phillips talked about how it took a lot of convincing at Warner Brothers to let him do an R. rated joker movie but that was the only thing he was pitching and he's literally hearing responses from Warner brothers like we sell joker pajamas at target what are you going to do to our character that might hurt Pyjama sales and look at the roads that deadpool paved and I think even more specifically logan going more dramatic and being R. rated you can't beat marveled by playing Marvin those game the way you beat marvelous by making your own Fox did that and nobody is even see new mutants because nobody knows what to do with it again the X. Men horror movie yeah they've experimented sometimes those experiments have been successful I'm just saying approaching this project hearing the we're going to do a one off film about the region of joker seemed like a waste of time I was not excited about this movie at all until I saw the trailer Yeah Al admit I mean after seeing what happened to jared Leto in jokers role in suicide squad. We'll see at that movie he doesn't think he was in that movie enough he's got a scene it was not overly excited to see what they would do with joker now what I will say is somewhere at this very moment jared Leto has pissed Yeah Joaquin Phoenix get attached this because that's what I would have gotten excited you know he's one of those actors like Tom Hardy who's like a Nicholas cage who is just going to make some decisions and go with them they could be czar. They could be captivating like that trailer yeah they really tapped into Martin Scorsese in that taxi driver field but I was even more excited about Joaquin Phoenix playing this role and should be pointed out he is the man that would be doctor strange he has quartered comic book movies before and walked away saying this is not really for me why do this one he was also offered the role of Bruce Banner the reason he didn't do them he didn't WanNa sign multi picture contracts he didn't want to do what Chris Evans and Robert Downey junior did where the next seven years of your life you're working basically as a day player for marvel here it's a one picture deal and the ways they got him on board for this one it was Todd Phillips again Joaquin was connected from the very beginning and the Pitch Phillips gave him is we're going to make a real movie but we're going to get warner brothers to fifty million dollars for it by calling it fucking joker yeah how did Todd Phillips and doing this because I've seen a lot of his films old cool that hangover trilogy these are not things that I associate with a Gritty New York Scorsese style film you saying that and coach when I look at this filmography I hadn't seen most of what he meant. Yeah they're bad comedies well he makes kind of comedy I don't patronize the I'm not ever interested in watching skin hutch that's just not something I'm going to see I did see war dogs which I actually thought it was a little underrated I thought it was pretty good it's okay yeah kind of fell apart at the end yeah thought it was decent as well and it was four dogs that actually got this happening as he was at an early screening of war dogs with Warner brothers and realize is is exact phrase was war dogs wasn't going to set the world on fire as so he started talking to Warner about what could we make that's going to really get attention and do a little bit more be a little more provocative look way down on his resume his first film and you might actually see why he really got the Gig I was doc I didn't realize I had always heard about this documentary about the punk icon singer G- yeah I did not know top Phillips did that I have seen it ooh those are some live performances you wanna be careful with he strips down throws a species tough stuff to watch yeah I watched the movie I was like Oh I've always wanted to see it this gives me an lent reason it may be the closest of all his films to joker it begins with an actual endorsement from John Wayne Gay see another killer clown so yeah brutal I don't know that I'm telling people I recommend that experience be prepared I don't say this lightly it is very punishing it is very hard set is provocative and ways a lot of people probably want appreciate but you can't see a director who's very much trying to confront a freak entertainer and I do think at a core G G Allen and joker are two sides of the same coin so I would be interested to see a guy that came from punk rock bring a punk rock aesthetic to of joker movie if we must Gotcha Joker Origin Story. I WanNa say though I'm hesitant because I mean I always liked the way Keith Ledger played it how did I get my scars there's a danger and telling US definitively how joker came to exist right. There's something about the mystery we want to leave I've always liked the mystery the funny thing and you can go back to books and Nachos where in our talks about the killing joke written by Alan Moore the joker says I always change my story but here's the version I'm going to tell of my own gin and they tell an origin story and then just as origin story we're just GonNa make that the real thing but yeah I've always preferred him to be like Batman rewritten so obsessed with origin Martha Thomas Wayne Getting Killed and the pearls and walking out Zora all of that that has been told so many times joker being the opposite of Batman I liked that you just this mysterious chaotic clown figure that comes out of nowhere yeah I've definitely was thinking the killing joke when watching this and how it took elements of that in that Comic Book Joker was a failed stand up comedian who was kind of down on his luck in a rundown older Gotham city but I came in I think we might be seeing virtually and adaptation of the killing joke minus all the Batman stuff no they definitely go in a different direction with this but it gave them a good starting point and joker said he likes his origin story to be multiple choice. DC is having both ways they're gonNa make their continuity multiple choice switch movies do you want and continuity go ahead that's weird for me that we're seeing something that I should not think of as a comic book movies essentially what they're telling me don't worry I'll have nothing to do with Zam Aquaman wonder woman and all of that I mean did they even have that DC logo they have that old school Warner Brothers logo show up no DC logo okay and yet I mean it's not just your average comic book movies this movie's doing bigger than a lot of films I mean it's opening bigger than the average thor film it's maybe not topped here it's not spiderman but I'm not really it's no atman though it's beaten that man right yeah this is going to have a ninety million joining in the US. The biggest October release of all time is it Halloween in the mood for something kind of scary after it we want another killer oh but it's shocking to me the box office for what essentially feels a little art film is so huge and that it's rated R. You can't get teenagers in which is where marvel makes its money is they are aiming specifically at thirteen to seventeen year old market with their PG thirteen films and yes adults can like it in younger kids can like it but they're keeping that content for a rated R. Film in an error where in my experience it's much harder for young people to get into a rated R. Film that it made this much money is shocking to me I expected it to do well I didn't expect it to break venoms record

"Story. The biggest story today is I thought it was the report. But apparently, it is it is the fact that Jason momoa shaving his beard off. Jason momoa was. Interesting shaving his beard. So so was that his thing you'd have a beard. I mean, so his look I mean guys find for whatever it is. I don't think he's particularly talented actor personally, but his claim to fame is that he is a very attractive cut individual with kind of a gruff, look, and he plays a superhero. He he's. Yeah. He played up barbarian character on game of thrones. And then he got the role for aquaman any played aquaman and Justice league. And then in the Auckland movie is that part of your whole deal. No, that's DC. Dismissive Toronto run run thought he was telling Garrett something that you'd be scared say, you know, as a marvel comic nerd, so he thought he was telling you something that that he'd wanna know. And Jason momoa, whatever I was thinking. Wow, you're like dismissing Ron what's that? And now, we know he doesn't replace for the wrong team plays for DC comics interest. I said to my goal. So judging by your reaction, not that's not that big story is well it is you're interested as beard. Dismissive excuse, right. Right. Don't get me wrong. I liked DC movies. Breaking Down 'Shazam!'

"Finds itself at an interesting inflection point. I would say I thought she was a very fun and entertaining movie, but it did not really feel like anything that had come in the DC universe before. And you kind of explain to me. What should I am is? And what it's trying to do. Sure. I mean, I kind of had the. To do the same thing after watching the movie because like right around the time the post credits scene with a evil Caterpillar happened. I was kinda like I've no idea what any of this stuff is. So thankfully, Mike does have a a piece on the ring dot com. A great website kind of breaking down the kind of Kazan origins. But yeah, he's he was actually originally called captain marvel and like in the movie there was like a wizard named 'schisms who gave him like all these superpowers. But when he sorta got folded into DC comics because marvel had its own captain marvel he then became Zam. But the whole spiel is basically the same thing like the wizards powers you activate it by saying Zam, and then I guess in the big conversion you just become buff, Zachary Levi. Yeah, I didn't even know buff Zachary Levi was going to be a thing that I would ever have to talk about. I can't say when I was watching Chuck ten years ago. That this ever crossed my mind that he would be a superhero, I think Tony Lee. This movie is pretty significantly different from superman vs Batman and the Justice league films and even wonder woman, which I thought was you know, is a very charming and obviously hugely successful movie. But there is a lightness in the tone, and it's not quite as operatic goofy. As was l-. You know, what did you make of the kind of movie that Sam was trying to be yet? No, I thought it was fun at kind of had like almost throwback Amblin entertainment coming of age vibe like something you'd see from like Amblin in like the eighties. But with the caveat that instead of a kid going on venture or something he can just become a superhero. But I thought it was a it was it was kind of an appropriate tone for for the kind of here that this guy is and I kind of like that, you know, a kid like a teenager becoming Kazan like he has like a bit of an aimlessness to him at the beginning. Like, there's not the sort of great power with great with great power comes great responsibility type speech. You just sorta has to learn things on the fly Yemen. One of the first things that the character does after he realizes his powers as he just goes to a convenience store in buys beer and candy. And you know, I it, you know, the movies clearly pitched as sort of what if big, but superhero, and it's very effective in showing us like maybe not with the real world ramifications would be because it's a little bit different in tone in the real world. But some of the like aspirations that you have as an adolescent, and the things that you wish you could do when you were thirteen sham does for the first hour of this movie, and the movie ultimately just becomes a story about like friendship and the way that we act bigger and older than we are. And what we can get away with in that time. And then it does turned into a little bit of a superhero movie. What did you make of the kind of balancing of those tones? Yeah. I mean, I think I did prefer sort of the the first half of the move. In that respect, as you know, there are so many superhero movies out there. And I think for the most part it's sorta gets derivative to when the movie gets the guy discovers his powers, you know, like Peter Parker, like scaling skyscrapers type of thing. But it was fun for Suzanne because it felt very like very genuine response. What if a fourteen year old kids suddenly had powers like, yeah? He would try to buy beer. He would go to script strip club in like beam about the chicken wings because this is a PG thirteen movie. You know, if he's in a world where superman Batman exists, and he doesn't really know. What to do is? You just if he can't find people to save is he just going to he's going to try to make cash and become a YouTube star. It was an interesting approach. But I think like I preferred that half of the movie versus like, the Mark strong shows up with seven CGI deadly sin, archetypes, or whatever. And it's time to punch him a lot. Yeah. I agree. I don't think part was active. It's funny because it feels like a movie like this, which is not exactly a reinvention. But is a is a reconsidering of what these kinds of movies can be still does arrive and its conclusion at the notion that needs to feature a lot of punching and a lot of fighting the bad guy. I'm curious to see if as we grow inside, the D C E U, I guess much like Zam. If they'll ever change the the the approach that they take having kind of the final showdown in the final forty five minutes of the movie that was also one of my struggles. Honestly with wonder woman, which I thought as I said was really clever and well made and then ultimately just turned into Diana fighting a demon monster who was played by David through Lous. What do you make of the decisions that DC is now making to singular is each of their movies? I mean, it's interesting because like, you know, they they did a pretty quick pivot from like fast-tracking their Justice league movie which end up being like relative to the expectations a bit of a bomb for them. Also, it didn't really track critically. But you know, they're kind of like making these films that have this very little interconnectivity like aquaman was only really playing the seeds for Auckland to and I guess a trench spinoff, which I could go on like a twenty minutes handed about the trench about the trend. Can't wait for the trench. And like kind of the same thing with wonder woman sequel in feels that way, which is. To you know, if it does well enough at the box office like affiliates just leading into sham two or maybe like a black atom movie, which is like a sham villain. That's supposed to be played by Dwayne Johnson. If you look at like the C projects that are in the air like a rebooted suicide squad, James Gunn, new bad movie. Perhaps a flash movie there's all these other projects like the one glaring omission is there are no plans to make like a Justice league to and not to say that would never happen again. But clearly like the D C you right now is content. Just kind of throwing stuff out there and seeing what resonates with audiences yet. If you look down there slate, we talked about this a little bit during the release of aquaman, but I was just in add an in Vegas at cinema Khan. And they were very proud of the approach that they were taking telling their stories because the next the next handful of movies. They have is of course, Zam, and you know, they also have joker which is coming in October. Which also feels quite standalone seems to have virtually nothing in common with the movie Lakesha Zam. And then there's also a birds of prey which is. Theon story of sort of five superhero team that will also include Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, and that totally and visually looks completely different from those other two movies. And so they've taken this decision to not just make that flash movie and not just make whatever inevitable green lantern movie. And with the same kind of stormy visualises that that Zack Snyder created, but to just kind of individually each story, which is what a lot of comic books are actually a lot of comic books have separate illustrators. They have separate writers their tones are quite different amazing spider. Man could be quite different from x men and superman could be quite different from, you know, detective comics, and what's going on with that, man. And of course, I guess next year late next year. We'll have the Batman which Matt Reeves Batman movie. Do you know, your your very closely track the comp films for us is it more interesting to you of all of this the fits together or do you like it better? If it stands alone and the movies get to be what they are. Well, I. Kind of like maybe I just have a bit of a marble fatigue. Just because it feels like we've been preparing for endgame like just just forever. But yeah, I kind of like this approach because you know, like, if something doesn't, you know resonate with with audiences like I personally wasn't as big of a fan as as wonder woman as other people were which is fine. You know, I I like parts of it. But, but you know, for the most part people really enjoyed it. And I think you know, it's an interesting approach. I think what will probably be most interesting is with wonder woman command and Zam they've all been pretty well received. And they've made a good amount of money. I'm curious what happens like how the DC EU responds when something flops with critics audiences in the box office. Do they like shake it off? Or if it's like, if it's bracing a certain tone, like, you know, let's say joker is actually quite terrible. And and you know, it's like a Scorsese prestige that. Just kind of doesn't work like will the DC you kinda void being that experimental. Again. I I'm curious to see what happens when there's kind of like a speed bump on the road for them. I am too is an interesting question because it does seem like in with Shas AM and most likely joker and handful of these other movies. They don't come with that two hundred and fifty million dollar production price tag. You know, they're definitely smaller movies with more modest ambitions, at least in terms of the execution of the movie. And so the risk is lower. So if let's say joker is not the sort of world-beating, cultural colossus that many would have us believe this week. That's okay. I think that they could probably survive that. And it's an you're right. It is a really interesting pivot away from all of that interconnectiveness. Is there anything else about his that you you really liked and you responded to? Yeah. I really like that, you know, I thought Zachary Levi was was just so good at like kind of capturing basically like, you know, a kid in a swollen dealt spot ended it so well like there were times where you almost felt to childlike for guy who's still like fourteen years old, but you could tell he was just having such a blast. And and yeah, I would have never expected Chuck would be like a swollen superhero. But I never expected Jim from the office to like, you know, make some hard movie also become buffer like Michael bay film. So I I guess, you know sick. I'm stars. They can transform. Yeah. Could you cast a sitcom debauche sitcom figure into into a superhero movie right now is there? Anybody springs to your mind? Is Jim Parsons our next. Green lantern. You think? Oh god. No, no. I'm trying to think of like if someone from parks and rec ado that transformation that isn't Chris Pratt. Because I mean, he's he's just forget about this point. He's he's like a discount printing. Frazier. But he he has done that as well. I mean, I guess maybe if if Adam Scott were cast as as galactic that would probably that. That's as close as we're gonna get

Mixed Reactions to Apple's New Services

"Apple unloaded a huge number of announced yesterday. A couple of big services first off apple TV. Plus, it's premium video service those updated Amazon Apple TV channels program as well as the debut of an apple credit card as well as apple news, plus an apple arcade allot to break down here. There was for you TV. Plus, I mean, that's pretty obvious. They rolled out Oprah come on. It's Oprah Spielberg and Steven Spielberg Reese Witherspoon, they basically were like, look, we know you guys already have net flakes. We're going to roll out every listener we could possibly pay for to try to figure out a way to get into the whole streaming video game. So this is were I had problems with it. They basically had all these towels all these big name stars come up on state and talk about their projects than there was a there was a seal real at the end. But really we didn't get a lot of footage on these projects. And like, I'm not that excited about anything that I've seen don't you know, that all movie trailers are just like that. Like when I go to the movies right before I watched the movie that I really wanna watch instead of a really well produced trailer. I get the actors behind the show just talking about what their show is gonna look like, that's that's what gets me excited for things. Okay. Authors of all you note, you'll footage, you know, that what they're gonna do is just slowly portion out these trailers. Instead this just the announcements, and then they're gonna get all of us in the media to write about each one of these trailers second of all I'm kinda surprised from what you said. Because like that Seifi thing called c. Yeah. With like aqua man that sounded totally bad ass. That's pretty cool. I don't know that there was nothing there that really inspired a lot of excitement. I. There's a little bit misleading. It's Nazi with aqua. Man. It's a. Facing? C S E C. Yes, they're all blind. They're all blind in the ocean with aquaman own blind. And they've been blind long enough that they debate whether vision was even a thing ones, which I thought look I thought it was kind of cool. It was a whole post apocalypse, you know, what would have made a cooler if there was a trailer for it. I would just say that the fact that we didn't get a price for this thing like the actual Vail -bility of the service is still it's falls, very vague. Probably the next iphone? There are a lot of questions and given the environment where we've got so many for streaming services, including one that we're expecting from Disney, which almost got no brainer for a lot of people anybody with a lot of competition for apple to get into. I'm curious if Apple's going to offer like trial, memberships Rapple TV, plus with you know, with your iphone or something like that Google offers things like that. If you buy new Android phone, probably at the first month free on the at least ninety days for YouTube TV, apple music, apple music was free trial when it launched through for three months because they didn't mention the price, and they had so many stars on stage to me, it seems that the priming the pump to say this is going to be like twenty dollars service, or whatever it's gonna be a premium to your service. They're trying to say this high quality, storytelling yada, yada, yada. You're going to be paying allied. Problem is that the top tier is HBO. Now in HBO is fifteen dollars a month. I don't think they could possibly justify going above HVAC not buying it. I I've not into the cheap though. So yeah, you're. Keep in mind. Yeah. You're you're spending Brown fifteen bucks from that flex spending. If you're spending fifteen bucks for HBO best thirty bucks right there. Got who direct TV now YouTube TV, there's so many options out there. They're all competing for your dollars. And really right now just didn't see any projects there that maybe see maybe. But that really entice me to actually like wanting to pay money for this thing. I think it's pretty safe to say that there's there's lots of concern whether this is really going to move the needle, and if anybody is really going to get to excited about it by we've said, the so many times you cannot count out apple for anything, especially when they just got started. They're sitting on more than two hundred fifty billion dollars. They've obviously wanted to hire the best in the greatest for this. So. It might take a while. But I imagine they're probably gonna get some sort of foothold unless they give up on me. The we made this argument when they came into shaming musical apple music there now number two behind Spotify. It didn't take that long to get there. So you're right. We shouldn't easily discount apple the other one. I wanted to the other big announcement one talked about was apple card, which then you cover payments that is it worth getting. I think people will get it because it will be especially the card itself will card will be status symbol, even though you probably shouldn't use it as a consumer. Because you only got one percent cashback one percent car on the physical part, which is lousy. You should do better than one percent cashback. I get one and a half percent cashback was also the city double rewards gets two percent cashback. There's a lot of good options out there. The other problem is that there's no sign up bonus, which that's a problem because a lot of the top tier cards out there give you like fifty thousand miles at this point, which is pretty solid points points. Yeah. So. I talked to a bunch of analysts you'll you'll see the story tomorrow. By folks are underwhelmed. They feel like this is big tech company. They should have done more innovation. The there are a couple of innovations. But in aggregate, they really were not excited

Netflix completes its breakup with Marvel, cancels The Punisher, Jessica Jones

"Pretty much completed the marvel exodus from net flicks. Like all of their as of this morning. Yeah. Jessica Jones punisher of being quote, unquote, cancelled for Netflix. But essentially, we're going to be in all at moving Disney Pluess. Well, weirdly this morning, the punisher was officially cancelled. But everyone kind of knew that Jessica Jones was always the most critically acclaimed at the show's third season is shot. As yet to air. Netflix statement was basically like thanks to everyone for making these shows that will live on forever on networks. So. I don't know. I mean, the characters are not done. Sure. But it could well be that this these interruptions of the characters tasks, and this kind of the Andy, and I were talking about a week or so ago about what kind of stuff is going to be undesired police were still doing it. I I think we have to commit to the bit at this point. I should gotten tweets from people. Like, I I will I will not be referring to this thing is Disney classier, they're they're gonna Bob I is going to personally, send us a personal. Thank you note in French. Does it come with a lot of zeroes? That's what you're I do assess then Netflix moral shows were gritty that was their whole kind of the pitch was like this takes place in a gritty, violent people curse people have sex people drink people, you know, when people get shot at bleed closer to our reality. Sure. Yeah. And you know stars. Yeah. I'm sorry mistake that maybe more like high another young people, right? But the Disney plus idea do they didn't he plus ideal is supposed to be a little more family friendly friendly. I think so I think that's more in the Disney brand think probably the hardest would get would be a a sort of soft PG thirteen at I think it's just an interest. We'll turn back Brel academy. But it's just to say that like, let's look at the results. Let's go to the tape. And let's look at the superhero movies that have succeeded in the last few years critically and commercially and what they have in common. And if you pluck out Thor ragnarok, Spiderman movie wonder woman, dead pool, an aquaman, there is a willingness and obviously in to different degrees between those projects to embrace the core absurdity of the project right to calm either to comment on it. You know in sort of a meta explicit way like deadpool or to run, right? Towards the fact that this is a movie about a talking fish man, which I haven't seen. But from what I gather when I heard that Julie Andrews was voicing internal like ocean beast. Maybe whether meant to be whether it was intended to be funny or not. Yeah. I was embraced and Wonderwoman. Embrace the kitschy optimism of it which which kept in America, the first venture did as well as a period piece, and I really appreciate that. And so despite the there's some there's some residual conservative knee jerk thinking here that would people the only way to make America by comic book properties is if they are grim and gritty that's just not the case anymore. This is a generation was grown up on this stuff and understands that that a comic book story can be high or low or light or dark like any story. Yes. And so I'm pretty into the surrealism of the umbrella academy if anything I

"Those really really fun. The only thing I'm picking about is the I'm really happy Jason low in his movie because besides that, and yes, we get a little bit of mantis the only black. He was the only Brown in this movie. This is like the co Kidman is mad white like she showed about like, oh, you white light lady. I mean like, but it was good. I don't know. It was just so far fish that. This was like, I don't know whatever I just liked it. I thought it was dumb. I thought it was fun. As like, I don't get anything about. What's happening? I don't understand how he had a suit injustice Lee. So then did not have a suit in this movie. Right. Was it this suit though? Nope. But he had a different he had. He had a cool of version of what the look like remember right this when they went back to traditional with that one was like cooler, but in this one did have times, it was this is the suit for this movie. And then this is the soup. Yeah. It's whatever. But I liked it. I enjoyed it. Because he had the real Trident. Yes. Try to stop. Yeah. I could go. I mean, I don't think this is a good movie. But I enjoyed it so much, okay. Like so much like the second. We see the little boy, and he's getting picked on and then just deficient just like back off the boy, I was like all the parts. Actually, actually the moment that I got me on board was when she said I was like I was like I am going to I'm gonna love. This movie was win cocaine goes, the tears. Underwater. They just they just float away up here. You feel them. Oh, my heart. These remember, I literally forgot about this. Parts of that line is so corny the second the second. And then and then the next thing that I was like, yes. The next thing so excited about was when Willem Dafoe is I teach in the little boy, and he's just has all these powers, and they're like, and he can do so much. But it was just like this is beautiful. This Little Brown kid has all these..

"England's leaving the European Union. And we're building walls and cutting up in stop creating connected universes. We can have standalone characters having standalone adventures, and we don't need to keep merging them into mass teams that era is over. We're done with the teams. Give me the solo. Yeah. I think that Marvel's hit facing that. I'm sure there will be another avengers film. But vendors four feels like the end of an eleven year run that everybody has tried to emulate with their connected universes. Everybody's trying to launch them, and it's just not going, well and the second most successful one is im- night, which is crazy. Well, hey, we're getting the transformers next week. "I could work in the vein of Che's Shem, plastic, man. No, I've just remembering the which hausky script from twenty years ago that for Jim. It was really terrible. I just remembered the seventies cartoon where every episode he got in trouble, and they were going to melt him then theoretically on the docket. I don't think so man of steel three. I mean, they'll come back to superman at some point. I don't know if it's going be a, Henry Cavill, though, death stroke solo film. Yeah. Sorry Will Smith. Now. I thought stroke was the old guy at the he's dead shot. Yeah. Yeah. You're right. You're right. Who's death stroke? He showed up with lex Luther at the end of Justice league. Oh, the fake deadpool. Yeah. No. I know. It's dining Joe. Yeah. Laid okay. I mean, you're going to name a bunch of characters, and I have no association. I look at who's bringing it that to me is way more important than the characters themselves. We've seen in many cases stupid characters. Can have cool movie guardians of the galaxy. Right. And now the rock has been cast as black Adam. She's AM villains. If that movies popular, I could see that one taking off and two more logo. Who I know is like this dark space bounty hunter, again, if they go with the more comedic route it could work he worships dolphin that floats through space. That's as God. Okay. And finally, the cyborg solo film. No foresight. Boy man, did you see cyborg in the doom patrol TV series trailer. No real downgrade looks like they've tapes them foil to enact her. I liked him. In teen titans. Go I'll leave it at that. Yeah. Having rewatch Justice league. I am not anxious to see that character return to the screen, but twenty four films in development Fowler a betting, man. I'd say seven of them will actually happen. I think that they need to get their act together. I mean DC, and I don't think they need to be told that I think the knows that they have some random hits that are happening this movie for. Whatever we've said with three red arrows is going to be deemed a success. They're going to keep pursuing aqua man, and they're going to keep pursuing wonder woman, and they're going to try to somehow stitch the other characters the actors that haven't walked away or, you know, just not hit with the audiences. They'll find a way to keep trying to reinvent this because the characters are to lie conic to throw away complete agreed with the superhero movies making such Bank at the box office worldwide and domestically as well as. Yeah. Aqua man's huge China opening I think they're being ballsy. I think that they're saying screw the shared universe thing. And that they're just going to go off and try to make good films and not care as much how they're connected anymore. I think that's why we can get a walking Phoenix joker film, and a non Aflac Batman film fine with that. Yeah. Give me a good story. All enjoy that in. I only worry about continuity because I'm on this podcast where we have to worry about discussing. But yeah, you give me a good film. I'm not gonna be too upset that it doesn't tied into the jus-. "What is the arc here? I don't even understand how this stuff happened. And I don't understand why. There wasn't a sacrifice. Why Vogel didn't sacrifice himself aqua man to escape the first time? And then why he holds Mira back in the second duel and be like, no, he must do it alone. I don't understand anything to foes characters doing you need to have some in as to why people on land would care about this battle. I thought what they had told us was there's something beautiful of 'bout aquaman because he's a hybrid of both realms, and the fact that he lives above and can go below. We'll have something that. Matters. But in fact, the only thing that wins the fight is a baton twirl and the fight ends after the baton twirl momoa goes to stab ocean master in the throat, but stops a hair shortest, Mr. miandi maneuver from. Action film or I'm not gonna kill because I'm not the bad guy. It's more than just karate kid, but the troops ocean master's troops get their guns ready, like if he kills ocean master, we're going to kill him. But isn't that the batteries bulletproof? No they have lasers. And okay. We've seen that their lasers can hurt him. But doesn't isn't it? If he kills ocean master, he's your rightful king. So he shows mercy on could really confused then. Yes, the Cole Kidman walks out. And that's when I really get the low-key vibe is when ocean master kneels to Nicole Kidman, and it's like mother, but you know, what I thought this whole movie is told me Arthur is not a king. Arthur doesn't want to be a king. He wants to go back to land and drink beer with biker dudes and mirror. Many times like good. You would be a bad king, and despite their passionate use that term loosely kiss before the fight. Where she wraps her leg around him. I mean, that's a really sexy kiss below the neck and above the neck. I'm getting nothing from these actors. I thought for sure the way this movie would end when or meals in his Mike clean. I'm like this is the outright aqua man can go back and hang with Justice league. And Nicole Kidman is going to be the ruler. But no all hail king. Arthur. But here's the problem is we're told repeatedly how many times did they say the word half breed in this film. I it's every other word it feels like or mongrel. Yes, that we're told repeatedly aquaman is debris between the surface world and the ocean world, except here's the problem. We never get to see how the surface world is reacting except a couple of cable news segments that will see. And I think that's just a setup amidst credit stinger at the end here. But yeah, I would I wanna know our people cheering a up command. You saved us from all the trash watching upon the shore. We don't see how surfaced Weller are reacting to. Yeah. I mean. It's an unholy mixture. Like, I don't feel like more people are going to be running into the serve trying to find a mate. To see more of this. You don't wanna have more aqua babies if this is what it's going to look like, he's not my king. Then yes, we end with tomorrow Morris at every day, he's gone out at sunrise because it's romantic at Lana said when it's safe return at sunrise. So if it's safe midday, she's gonna wait eighteen hours and return to sonar rise. And finally, he goes out one day, and there she is and they kiss, and despite the fact that they're all twenty five thirty years older, they still love each other more convincing the kiss that Auckland Amirah have admittedly and sequel. I mean, it's probably going to happen because look at that Chinese box office, but mid credits Manta, how did he even get knocked out of the fight?.

It's not like the Bruce Willis situation where he can't not smile. I don't know if he's giving baked off the set and then in and just stone throughout all of this. He looks like he knows what he's doing. And that is a laugh when he's eating the Rose Bowl. But everybody around him thinks they're in this high Shakespearian drama. So he feels like he knows what movie he's in an amber herd is like this is important. Yeah. This film feels like it's two different things mash together at one point a little girl is gonna hand mirror. A book about Pinocchio, we saw earlier aquaman and mirror escape by going into the mouth of a whale. And outmanned says, oh, I got that from Pinocchio, and she's like you basis office storybook, and I got actually off of a movie, I'm like oh. So this is going to this going to play something that's been Nokia theme. No. It's just for this joke. That comes like ten minutes after the whales seen it never comes. I'm back that he is so stupid that he doesn't even know what a book really is. I'm in a book from the movie. Yeah, again, and that makes it hard for me to like any hero. Any anybody playing that so anti intellectual dome like that is already kind of a turn off the fact, it's them. I mean, the fact that the actors can't sell this moment, I think that there were actors that could I mean, I never blamed worth for the jokes that clunk and Thor. What's interesting? I'm going to challenge you a little bit here Arnie because you have given green lights Thor. You've given green Light's green lantern. We have seen this crap before you hate this. What is the what is the difference that the actors you don't like these acts? I don't hate this. I'm laughing at it. But merely disconnected from it. And a big problem with it is twofold, first the visual style, again just the poor week choices across the board. Just the poor CGI. Hang the fact that nothing has physicality to it including the actors and be yet, the two leads. Are as dry as the Sahara here. I mean Greenland, or when they were in space had these saying visual problem? So I'm going to call bullshit on that the thing is you like Ryan Reynolds. And you don't like Jason momoa that is the only difference. I liked Jason momoa game of thrones. I think that you have a real blind spot when you like an actor you can go along with a whole lot of shit when you like the actor that's in the middle of that shit pile. But I into this moving thinking I liked amber her, and I thought I like Jason momoa. I thought his performance in Justice league didn't fit with that movie. But in the trailers Jason momoa came off as like he was going to be a really good aqua, man. And here he's the best thing in this movie. I'll give it that. But the fact that you can laugh at Thor and not laugh at this is based on them. No, it's based on four one was a decent rom com. I we've had that discussion. I'll leave it on the table. But I would argue there's actually no difference between the movies, except how you feel about the people in not true. I didn't know or like, Chris Hemsworth. When Thorpe came out, I didn't know him at all. I'm not saying your pre previous bias..

"Like the best he's ever been. Yeah. You need. Stop. He is not really good here. He is the best. He's ever been. Stewart. He is really good here. Did you see this movie? He is the best actor in this. Let us not get confused by saying he is good everyone else's as bad as he is here here in this movie. I'm only talking about in this movie. I'm not talking about in cinema in general is good here. All right. You know, a movie like this can survive one central performance. That is lackluster, the problem is you can't have to wonder woman, gal Gadot, I'm on record. I did not think she was very good. But I thought Chris pine was awesome. And putting them together made her better may that chemistry. Really, great Mola is central casting surfer. Boy, he is completely adequate in that. And will never be a great dramatic actor you need to pair him with a fish like Meryl Streep and heard should be seen and not heard actually she shouldn't even be seen that wig. She should just be fired. They needed to find an actress that could make him. Better. And she makes him worse. She is terrible in this film. I can't believe it. I thought I liked amber heard I thought she was very good in a movie that Jacob you put in our book that I had never seen before drive angry the best ghostwriter film ever made. And she was really good in that. And I guess that might be all eczema in the spirit. She played death that movie was death. So, and I guess I saw in machete kills but I don't remember her in that. But here she can't IMO, and I really again wanna see the behind the scenes of her looking constipated and waving her hands around to control water, at least she comes out of the waves here where in like the last place trophy on the little mermaid look or like contests the sequin green dress in the red hair. She I mean, I pissed too. I mean, I wouldn't be working for some reason. She's got heels like. Doc, Bryce, Dallas Howard running in heels Jurassic, ro this woman is swimming throughout this film. She's atlanta. But why do you need heels underwater Cleese, but she's not atlantia helped me out on this? She's part of the other tribe. She's part doll. Yeah. And she doesn't live in Atlanta. She's being married into Atlanta's for whatever distinction that means, but they're all land lands, and because they're underwater people that came from king at Lynn. But yet, yes, it's from galls kingdom, she's Princess of ziebel tribe. But I think they're all Atlanta is a species the way Russians and us are still human. And I care as much as everyone else in this movie. I just moving on whatever she comes out of the waves here after his drinking binge to tell them. Hey, you really need to go claim the throne because my fiance is a real dick and these are like actual. That's how. He's a total. Dick a tool bag. This is the dialogue. She comes up during the big waves or does launch that attack and dolph gets out drive away in a scene that looks like it's right out of the day after tomorrow or some other Roland Emmerick film with Toomer Morrison there. I'm like can't out Dr sue NAMI, and they do drown. And she's able to first of all create an air pocket for the truck by unju- leading moving the water away. And then able to pull the water out of Tom's lungs because while Arthur has the unique power to talk to fish for some reason Mira has the unique power. She's like magneto with water right with that red wig. I'm glad she's just water bedding instead of hair bending like Medusa in humans. I don't wanna go back again. It is a similar looking wig. Now that you've said it is by white kept accused me of making her see another in humans film, yet the budget for this week looks like the budget of that ABC and humans TV show too. I thought this scene with aquaman loses his dad with the soon. Nami I thought this was going to be his come to Jesus moment realizing the wrong with Mata's dad that he was gonna lose his dad here, and he was going to be able to have empathy. But no, yeah, they bring them back alive..

"Realm is what I'm going to call out here is that I understand he wants to rule all over what used to be unified. But I don't know what that was then or now, and I get why this is so complex now, I've not read the new fifty two aqua, man comics, but from the super fan, I went to the movie with this entire thing is very closely hewing to the new fifty two origin of aquaman and the new fifty two is where they took away Superman's red panties and everything they did the new fifty two to try to establish a comic that would look like the movie universe. Well, and they had a streamlined. The problem with DC is they've rebooted so many times crisis infinite crisis multiple crisis. There's always a crisis and that. Yeah. They're always having to change continuity, because they're like, how do you have this nineteen fifties superman family where there's a Super Bowl and a super girl, and yeah, they they always have to do this. So that's fine. Take the most recent continuity and run with it. I just either play up the camp because look this should be camp. All these Brian people. I'm cracking up. You know, what might comparison is? Here's what this movie should've been nineteen eighties flash. Gordon, like, it should have been brightly colored and crazy different tribes of hock people or shrimp people in this case, you know, what? I mean, just go crazy with it. And don't try to give us all these explanations. Just give us a colorful crazy underwater world. I mean guardians did that. And it's the biggest marble thing. I feel like those aren't that far removed from a camp film? It's just there Willie. There's a lot of money behind them. So they look really good. But what I'm saying here is with these seven kingdoms, I think in a comic this makes sense because you have to put out twelve issues a year for Infinity as so having seven kingdoms that Akron can have various villains in allies in building a universe make sense. But when trying to boil that down into one exposition scene for poor Patrick Wilson, it's incomprehensible to the uninitiated. Stated in the fact, I have a hard time understanding whenever there's conversations going underwater because they want to add some kind of sound effects. It was like a wobbly underwater sounding and it just makes it hard understand. Yeah. To put it. Bluntly for me, the person that is not inclined to want comic book, continuity. Yeah. This this is unreliable like this is going back to Ola like you have made green lantern all over again and having crayons fight each other about what the best color is is about as silly as. Yeah. Watching crab fight of fish man fighting. Yeah. Guy with the TRITON. It's just silly. But but Stewart you you agree that you can have a silly fun movie with that stuff. It's they don't wanna do that. Sometimes they do. But then they don't two things this universe was established by Snyder as being more grounded and serious really established by Nolan Schneider copy. Nolan and it's hard for them to get away from that and two they have very bad joke teller, swimming, cut back to land aqua man is getting drunk at breakfast and thinks he's going to be beaten up by bikers and they end up wanting to use their glittery pink phone to get a selfie. That is not a joke. That is somebody looking for a joke. Yeah. It's not the fact that they want a selfie, whatever. It's when he pulls out the phone and the big tough biker man has a pink phone come on. You are really begging for me to laugh watching it. The first time I actually kind of liked that seem to get the second time. They don't play right? Because what do you want till you would want? You know, he says it so threateningly in the scores you're expecting this big fight to remorse in gives aqua. No blink lake. I got your back as turns into a bar brawl. But I do like, basically, it's like what of the end of the hangover films where you get to see all of the photos and man's don't touch me and later on their crawling all over each other. And..

"But yeah, I do think that if you're watching this movie, it seems like Arthur he's like, where's it Landes? I don't know what Atlanta's is. It all wears torn t shirt. So that the women can look at my pictorial tattoos. He swims like steel toe boots. That is you don't do that take the shoes off if you're going to go swimming. He's man that's one of his powers got take his steel boots away from him. But no I in Justice league. He. He went to Atlantis Atlantis. Didn't look like much. He couldn't talk underwater mirror ahead to make an air bubble for them to discuss Steppenwolf. And yet he had that full armor and the Trident. Yeah. He didn't even feel like you do is mom had supposedly been killed which is like a big part of his character throughout this film. And that one he's just like, my mom left to be. I'm mad at her. And yet, I'm not gonna get bent out of shape about sentencing. You guys complain. It's not a good movie. Why continue that just calling out the continuity? It's not there. But what I'm saying is then let's have a clean break. James one comes in with the vision. We've kind of appreciated him another movies. He is best known. I think four horror he kicked off with saw. And then insidious and conjuring what about the Kevin bacon death, notice or whatever it was death sentence secretly wanted to do other things like action, and that was one of them and fast and furious. Seven was another. He is ready for showing who he is director. He is ready for launching a big epic superhero that I'm curious to see come to. Well, I feel like he's already shown it, right? I feel that the CGI and all of that in the fastest furious movies. There is big budget and globetrotting as any superhero movie. In fact, I was getting fast and furious flashbacks here because I never expected an aquaman movie to take me like a JAMES BOND movie to the Sahara, and then to Italy, and all these various places main. Yeah. But what I'm saying is previously. He was handed things that were already done. We knew the crew fast and furious, we don't really know much about Jason memo 'as aquaman, even after seeing Justice league. So that he is going to be able to tell that origin story is I think a reason to be hopeful about what we're here to discuss. And I was very hopeful. I went and saw this early Amazon. Prime has done this a couple of times before if you were an Amazon prime member you could buy tickets to see aquaman a week early. And I'm like, I'm there I'm hearing it's better than wonder woman of the three of us. I felt wonder woman's third act just fell apart. So I'm thinking you could be better than wonder woman. I was there sold out opening night sold out. I would think people would cancel the prime membership trying to push aqua man on us. No fans were there was a complete full house of aqua fans. Wow. I went to five o'clock Thursday afternoon. You know, the girls are at of school took the family, the four of us went, and I was surprised pretty almost sold out except for those two rows that never sell out unless it's a huge film pack theater. Yeah. I did see this again I wanted to be fresh in my memory says since I saw a week ago. I went back on a Friday. I MAC showing it was three thirty in the afternoon was pretty empty, actually. And maybe it's because school wasn't out yet here or people were still at work. What have you? But I was surprised at how many empty seats. There were for movie. I reserve my seat for a week in advance funny. Little story. I saw this movie five minutes of it in three D. I told Arnie yet the show just aside bar, you know, AMC's got this great little deal where you can be the head of the line in premium status, and you can book your own tickets..

"I guess I mean money can always make things better. But it seems like superman is gone. I don't know if he shave his mustache for some extra money. I don't know if he's going to come back for whatever they'll throw at them paramount wouldn't let him he would've and been epic too. I hear he's a director. He was going to make his own Batman film. Now. I'm hearing nothing about that. Matt Reeves this still working on a Batman film Aflac. I don't think he knows what he's doing right now. Yeah. And that nearer that. See universe. I think we got to joker movies, supposedly development. I know we're going to get a walking Phoenix. But that Jared Leto weird tattoo. Joker is supposed to get a movie to like what is going on? They has been one unqualified success. And that is wonder woman if nothing else comes out of all of this. They have a solid future with her gal Gadot will be back in that not enough for a whole universe. But it gives a sign of encouragement where we were seeing a lot of mediocre to bad films going on wonder woman was a set in the right direction. But aqua bands a tricky one. And I had heard aqua man, early buzz best movie in the DC universe better than wonder woman that was the high where you talking to an aquaman fan because I want to talk down any aquaman fans. I'm sure there's not many of them out there. But I agreed like this is what you're going to end your this is going to be the saving grace of your movie universe aquaman. Like that was the early buzz is that this. This was going to be that good. And it got my hopes up because you mentioned that aqua man's tough sell. It's all because of the super friends that is tarnished his reputation, I feel forever. And yet that's what I like the time that I did like aquaman. I was six years old. I remember loving going to the community pool. And that was the character you would play right to be that when you're six of our certain age group playing around with the fish. I had an aquarium Jacques Cousteau was on TV back when I was a child. I felt like I had some kind of connection in childhood to this character. But what he's become and how an adult could relate. That's harder. I mean, his powers went back and I reworked Saturday morning cartoons for a while. And super friends was one I revisited how they always had to shoehorn something underwater for aqua man to do. Well, everybody else actually did important things on land. And exactly how good is it to be able to talk to fish. That's a if e- power now here they've really ramped him up. He's bulletproof. He's super strong. He's super fast. I mean, this is more like the comic book version where if you imagine a race of people that lived up at the bottom of the ocean, they get to land. Well, they don't have all that water pressure. So they've built up all these muscles. So they could jump really, and they're really strong, and they could see in the dark because of that ocean environment. They're used to like there are good comic book stories. But again, it's that cartoon I feel is ruined him forever. It would be hard to shake that. And they will eventually cop to that suit. He Jason memorial eventually going to go orange and green by the end of this. They have to because gorge in green and Justice league, though. It was weird. I'm like did avid suit the gave him a suit in that movie. And they're doing it all over again. Now, having rewatch Justice league continuity is bleeped. Yeah. I re- washed not pull movie they wanna sit down again. But I watched the aquaman scene where he's underwater. And yeah. This isn't jiving with the movie. I just saw theaters. All right. I'll be honest. I turned it off when superman was directed. I'm like I've seen enough Auckland. But he was wearing armor in that film. I don't know where he got the armor. Maybe Willem Dafoe was like here. This is in your size where when you go fight Steppenwolf, but he was wearing armor and amber heard was not wearing a really bad clown week. But other than that he was not wearing the orange and the green though, it was like this gold and black suit of armor. Well, it's hard to tell them that movie the color palette, so awful..

"Today, we're discussing aquaman starring Jason momoa, amber, her Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, dolph Lundgren Yahya Abdul Matisse in the second and Nicole Kidman directed by James won-. This is Arnie and guys. Can we hurry this up? I'm missing happy hour for this, man. This is Stuart and the Jacob king of the monkeys. It's finally here, right? The DC extended universe has returned. It is hard to believe how long it's been since Justice league rewatch Justice league for this. And I was like, wow. This was a long time ago and the CGI and the plot don't get any better with time longtime ago, isn't that just last year? Yes. That was the shock. I've thought it was two years ago. But it was last thanksgiving yet feels like two years ago, though. And I think I was the kind of the three I gave it a mild green arrow, my sense was they say the patient. They were dying on. The operating table with whatever Snyder head done, and they stopped the him urging and they got the patient off the table. And that to me looked like success at that time, but he's never left the ICU to this day. The truth of the matter is none of us felt like it was healthy enough to go on. And yet Auckland was already in the can James wanted already more or less shot. This thing they had to go forward. Whether they thought it was a good idea or not. Yeah. If feels like they're just pulling that tablecloth from underneath a thanksgiving dinner, who cares where the mashed potatoes. Fly the Turkey and stuffing regatta just clear this table off Justice league, two hours sharp to our hard time. Limit. This is going to go on for two and a half hours. Weirs Henry ca Ville and Ben Affleck, they're rumored to be gone from the DC universe. Like, it does feel like let's just get this movie out. Who cares? We don't even know if there's a future is their future for DC at this point or they do they have to review. Well, we'll talk about it at the end of this. There's twenty six movies in developments several in this universe. They've written down twenty six names. Development they've paid people to write or produce or look into these twenty-six movies or hired stars. But Henry Cavill. Apparently, they asked him to do something. I don't know if he was going to have a cameo in this movie or something, but he's like, I'm too busy with other stuff. I'm not going to do it. And that has led to a rift and Warner Brothers is like we're done with Henry Cavill. And Cavs like, well, I'm done with superman. And so a divorce has occurred..

"Here's the picture book version, right? Sure. I found two that. I find pretty interesting that I was going to buy at Barnes and noble and bringing today to gift the two of you for Christmas. And I forgot. Be a whip book. One of them is called before he was aquaman undertow an original novel. Ben, here's the cover some flashing waves squid title. Now, this is the why a fiction version of its it's the tortured emotional. I don't know where I belong aquaman a teen novel, the the twilight if you will, you know, the other one which is like a water Bong. Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. He hangs out on a porch. This is the what I'm going to buy for David. It's called Ottoman Arthur's guide to Atlanta. Oh, I like this and this book purports to be Arthur's diary as a child while he was training with Willem Dafoe. So it's written in the voice of a surly trial Jason momoa with entries from thirteen year old outcome AK, Arthur curry, this guy provides everything you need to know about the hidden kingdom right from the season fittest population will look in the weapons in the arm revolt. One hundred forty four page entering notes journal entries exclusive ever seen four hundred photos. So it's essentially just a world building with Allah G, and the voice of surly teenager. Cool. That's that's my merchandise ball. I'll tell you. What? What can I tell you Michael Jordan production is proving to be foolish seemed like he will not get nominated? That was a them fucking if they. But then Sam Elliott also missed a couple Navas. He got his sag. He's in. He's I don't think he's gonna win anymore. No. I think you're winner is revenge, which it'd be nice. He's a lovely man. He knows how to campaign that's the winds at a cocktail much like same Elliott was my prediction earlier guy. Never got credit. Well, everyone's worked to them. Yeah. It's it's it's like the Rockaway last year. It's like, oh, I know Richard. He's great. Here's another thing. It's a wonderful fucking performance. It is very lovely performance. Very good performance. Really like like he such like his life is so miserable guests and those early scenes where he's kind of keeping that on the, and you sort of been he's just lets the facade slip. Great. And you know, you got a year where it's like same Elliott only has a couple key scenes and stars March. Not if you part. Yeah. I don't drive her. Now looks locked to get supporting actor nam. I would argue is believed that movie he he's essentially I leads, but I'll allow it. It's one of those things where I'm like, look, it's John David Washington's movie. Yeah. He's the one with the truly emotional arc, and he has all the scenes with Lauren. But I'm just saying, you know, like, so it's like little more his movie, but certainly plenty of Dr not griping about either. I'm just saying I do grant is like that is a pure. It's supporting or us the second Lee, very meaty supporting, but it is pointing her real co star in the movie is loneliness. Yes. But no because drivers kind of like John Washington tool in that. That way. No, I get it. I get it. I just hope Rockwell who's good in vice does not get you donation. But I would rather you want to arm to get him. Well, that's the dream. Right. But I mean, he has committed a lot of C crime that that's I mean, they're giving some PR problems even Peggy Siegal could spend that one, you know, you've got fucking like Mira Sorvino. And she's like best supporting actor orm. And then she's like, oh, there's a note here to be clear the character from Akron, not Patrick Wilson. Or all right. But I'm worried that if Rockwall MRs Shalam will get it and that performances. Well, this is your mountain. You wanna die on? I feel like he's definitely getting it. He's gotten every precursor. But it's nobody cares about the movie. I guess I don't think he's the one on the chopping block rock gets in. Maybe pushes out Elliott. That's what the Globes did my friend Gloser. Yeah. They are to be clear. And by the way, we would love to win a Golden Globe this year. Just please. Original score as supporting warm storm. So do you wanna talk verse still oh, don't hours, we two hours?.

"I think it was the second true that had the extended sort of cut of their big fight fights. And people are like, geez. This looks goofy. I was like what do you mean, this looks goofy? What are you a goofy movie looks goofy? This looks amazing an extremely goofy movie looks even goofy see crime. What are you some secret apologises the greatest episode we've ever done? You don't want. See Justice though, you want see crime. They're not hybrid now to be fair. It's like on the opening of movie, you could basically call see crime league. Right. You could. Now, this is where this movie, I I'm starting to realize the narrative ambition of how deep they're going because it's like, okay, we're interested to this early on. Now, clearly what they're going to set up is that I'll commend kills black Manta's father, and the movie is black mantle wanting revenge right there like weird independent to the poor. They have a weird like seacraft to the point where I am watching the movie, and I'm like, I could just worn black men to was a human not in Atlanta. And like. What they're transept that. They're like navy seals. And then he becomes a super villain are elite criminals. Right vary. Elites? Yeah. And and Michael b has that monologue that we were talking about off mic where he's like, listen, your father, black Manta. Yes, except he wasn't black meant he was just meant to my father. You're right. Right. Right. He was meant to in World War Two. And then he went back to the sea. And I was like he went back to the just taken over a Russian submarine, man. And then Michael beach turns to maintain and says this feels like a good time to tell you my father, your Cranfield. Three. Okay. So you're just like wait what how carrying Jason Moseley Howdy aiding people with his PECS. And he's doing the classic one flip that they do and furious seven when they throw a guy that camera with Nikai, right, right? The perspective shifts the when the rock rock bottoms, Jason safe them, or whatever that. Yeah. Exactly. And and so then he comes to head. They're all fighting. Your your mess up is submarine. No good. Which by the way. I just love that Michael beaches to December releases are men, and if deal streak could talks very good Michael beach playing tough, but intense like a third watch. Yes, you play the dirt bag husband in E ER. Yes. But playing supportive go but somewhat haunted fathers. This is true in Auckland, man, and Beale street, just this is all true. But I also love that right aquaman right now. He's not concerned with Atlantis now. He just been in the Justice league. Literally, just see just so right? He's like there's a crime. But see, I commend is there. I'm the cop. Right. I'm alone see cop. So he now they're fighting him. He tried ins- or or five dense, Michael beach. Yeah. And Manta is he doesn't even he just turns like a pipe through. Right. He pipe punish any unpaid. All right. But then some shit falls on remember somebody because Oguz because Michael beach throws a grenade or something. Right. So Schiphol's, Michael. Michael beach is like because because his son is going to try them. That's later. That's that's later. I he throws a grenade. Shoots expose who. Grenades. Something blows up and falls on him kind of crazy technology this point and your world is this movie said who fucking right and all the shit's on him, and by mantis like, you know, healthy and how come into the sea beg to the C. Right. The see for Justice and his Snyder shirtless tattoo, look, and guess jeans jeans. Right. See law jeanson boot that is law cordray bent. So apparently, this is all about board Michael beach kills himself. So that his son will will save himself. Yes. And he gets up to land on his weird Stingray ship and immediately like Justice, right? "It is quite nerdy energy about it Lantis. And that's there are no attempts to try to make aquaman hip or cool. No like, they make him like triumph is making him less. Cool. Yes. Like, he's no longer. The Snyder thing where it's like he wears jeans and no shirt, right? The triumph of the movie. Bright, orange, and the other thing is the macguffin of this movie is the Trident because Snyder famously was like take this tried as and cool enough needs have five blades, not tried anymore. Try it's not like that's going to accomplish anymore. I mean three and this movie is literally Willem Dafoe rolling out a map. And he's like you must find the true Trident. And he's like I have one of those. And he's like, no that sucks. Thing. Right. So it's like his mom's or whatever it is a crucial moment in the movie that it gets cut in half. It is like, you know, on a on a surface level. The movie is saying like alcohol needs to learn to wear dorky your costume and have simpler weapon. Yes. A stop trying to like show off how bad ass. He is. Yes, you know. And that's the thing is like when the movie the movie's premises like, we all know crimen. He's that fun guy. From Justice league says my men and like, yeah. Drinking giant beer, right? Right. That's the Senate. It's like what we need to understand is that the politics of Atlanta's are very complicated. He needs to learn about that. I would say there is. In this movie that feels like it's from a human movie, go ahead normal human American movie, which is him at the bar or you mean when the tough guys transfer fight with him, and so they want sell fees, and then he drinks a lot and David was so charmed confess. Yeah. So fooled by yes. Like they because this is still early in the movie. Yes. So what we've had so far when we'll we'll let's say this. So it opens with let's let's go to the front. It opens with Jason momoa saying drills for once and you and I like all three of us just start pumping fists in the joy..

"Well. And once again, he was sort of back in the salt pocket where it's like he made a really good movie for really small budget that played being stream true. And and now he's sinked up with Jason Blum who's the guy who understands modern hor. Played tiff much like saw, you know, like it was a festival movie had more of like a genuine buzz to it. They were like this is actually well. So weird. It's so good in my opinion. I have not seen chapter two. But you would love it. So does he make two before conjuring one? Okay. No, no, I'm sorry. He goes insidious conjuring insidious two furious. Seven conjuring too. That's weird. That's the order. I forgot that conjuring to is after fury baby. What time difference one year? He's fifteen twenty sixteen. Crazy. It is crazy. I mean, I think furious seven he did a lot of you know, because it was a delayed release. Right. Yeah. Because of Paul Walker's staff. Yes. Right. So insidious they just conjuring one hundred fucking rules it it's slack conjuring. Is where you're like this guy is for real. Yeah. And now, he's got a slightly bigger bucks. Lovie rules. Have you seen the conjuring? Oh, why haven't you seen every shitty? And good harm the last ten years. I checked out on Har big time. I just feel like Benza horrible. Yeah. You'd also love one. Okay. You would. And the is at this point. He's like my guy is Patrick Wilson. I know who's I knowing who's this great like pine tree of American cinema. Who no one figures out how to Patrick Wilson is a Broadway. Actor emerges on the the from the full Monty round Broadway needed Oklahoma. He's one of the most classically handsome, some people alive, you know, real handsome guy. Yeah. Looks you know, he's like he played like Raul in fancy offer, which is sort of baby face role in that he did Oklahoma. He did full Monty. He was doing all these Berber musical. Who is? I just hear it. Wait. Who is? I was just listening to an interview with someone who had directed him in something. Fuck what was it where they were? Like, there was a scene that required. Singing, and they said to Wilson like can you handle this sorry about this? Like, you got and Wilson just looked at him like completely baffled was like, yeah. No. I'll be fine. Yeah. Started seeing the guy was like wait a second like. Jason Reitman young adult. Oh, yeah. Which is very good in that is but lot of times he's cast in that sort of like the dope or the pill. He's the guy who's tracking down the team. You know, he's the the husband who's having the affair little children. And I remember my mom saying like, he's such a good actor the promise. He's actually too handsome like it's distracting news networks any movie he's in. I mean, Jude law had that probably talked about it until he got like a little less handsome. Yeah. Kinda helped him out and the other problem with Patrick Wilson it actor. Yeah. The problem is he's a real actor. He's like he's not someone who's trying to be like a leading man movie star. He's kind of a character actor Fargo very much the show, but in it. Yeah, he was in the second season season. He's the main cop in the second. Yeah. He is fucking. I really think he's wonderful in intels in America. The Mike nickel lovely adaptation of that. That's a great grassing. Yes. And then he did little children. I feel like he starts. Sort of fall off the map. You know, like as a serious he becomes like, you're you're just show up and moving you're like oh, Patrick Wilson. He shows up in like Lakeview terrace. He's the main. I mean, he is the protagonist of Lakeview terrorist. Excuse me. Samuel Jackson the protect. He's not he's the anti Guinness. I know I know. But like the poster is like sale Jackson looking at you the audience late. I would argue role since not to see us the main character. He's not the proof. Saying it's like trying to put him on TV. He does that like it'd be right. It's like never working. And then he does like, I guess is gonna like slum it and do a horror movie, but one really locks into him put them in both cities put them in both conjuring ze. Correct..

"In two thousand four in a tiny town. A young woman named Rebecca Gould was brutally murdered. Nearly fifteen years later her killer is still on beliefs. Tend to suspects work everywhere. So we could have already talked to the Keller. It's just really surreal to walking around like. So much skier. I left Arkansas became an investigator. And now I'm coming back with my team to finally get Justice for beca. That is out there and ready yell Duprat, dude. I'm Katherine towns. And this is Helen gone. Catch new episodes by subscribing apple podcasts or on the iheartradio app or wherever you listen to podcasts. And we're back in before we hop into the film. We're gonna talk about a couple of other aqua command films one of them actually, not a film is the animated series. I don't know if you know this. If aquaman is a film Asian animated series that premiered on CBS on September ninth nineteen sixty seven and ended June nineteen seventy it's a thirty minute version of the superman aquaman hour of adventure. And it was repackaged without the superman and super boy segments. I love that they kept super boy in there. Yes. So there were thirty six aquaman segments produced for that plus eighteen segments featuring other superheroes, man. Speaking of awkward shows, you may not know about where you aware of the aquaman pilot that dropped in two thousand seven wait. So like aired. So what happened was the aquaman pilot? They were expecting it today. Byu on the fall schedule of two thousand six but they also had a merger with WB and UPN, which is what created the CW network. So it was supposed to be for the WB during like small villes, huge, boom. But when it turned into the CW, they opted not to buy the series, and they pass on the pilot, but they did make the pilot available online, which is cool because that normally doesn't have it. Just disappears and aquaman was played curiously enough by the person who played Oliver Queen green arrow in smallville, which was the actor just in. Hartley. So that would have been weird anyway, which came first let's just in crossover. I did want to say for the Auckland the animated series. Those episodes have been seen as part of cartoon network's boomerang, and then in October of two thousand and seven Warner home video released the adventures of alkyl men, the complete collection on DVD. Wow. So which is a two disc set features all thirty six off-limits segments from the series and was presented original uncapped broadcast presentation. And we're Joel air day..

"So this was falling the conclusion of the flashpoint crossover, which if he talked about DC cancelled all of its existing titles debuted a new fifty two series in September of twenty eleven and I think we have a quote from Geoff Johns here. So this is from an IT an interview with Geoff Johns in twenty eleven around the new fifty two a number one issue being released as part of the new fifty two DC's 2011 relaunch of their entire superhero line. Geoff Johns, Ivan REIs and Joe Prado served as the. Initial creative team of the company's new aquaman series. So the first issue was released in September of twenty eleven the three creators remain on the title for the first sixteen issues that subsequently led to the first continual aquaman related crossover known as throne of Atlantis aquaman now struggles with his lack of reputation with the greater public which Beuys him as a lesser meta human. This is like a going joke that I've seen in the comics of them kind of like the public making fun of aquaman EM thing that I enjoy about acclimate, and they even Geoff Johns addresses it really well in like re envisioning aquaman. I like volume seven number one the trench. But with this like, for instance, there's a scene where he is sitting in a restaurant, and everybody's like what you're you're that dude, you're the do that talks to fish. And it's like, I do not. Yeah. Talk to fish and. Yeah. And he even goes. Into it where it's like, a it's part of him stimulating the Sara bellum and compelling compelling sea creatures to then do what he wants to heed what he wants to make it into an instinct for the creature. So it's not out of you know, it's not out of this stuff of life for them. So it's not him telepathically being like, hey, so what do you do in Wednesday? My schedule's clear kind of thing. But going back to what you were saying with aquaman where he is people make fun of him. You know, I like that about him. I like that he's in the classic outfit. Not everybody agrees with this. But it's like because he is he's a decent person. He's a good guy with this comment. He does have a lot of the personality traits of like the nineties Okla, man. But enough that also bounces it out that he's a mature individual that puts up with people making fun of him. He makes it okay. To be who he is. He normalizes being authentically you, and that's one of the things that I really love about that. That's why. Like that they have Jason momoa being occupant. Because can you picture anybody? Just anybody else being totally chill with being themselves..

"Yeah, it's from this is the same the same one with a clone background for superman because I know that for later on. I believe this is different. I think this. No, you're right. Is it? Okay. Exactly. Yeah. He was Super Bowl. Okay. Yeah. I mean, you have to think back. It was a simpler time the silver age comics. So it's like somebody is younger they'll be calling super boy. And then they'll grow into this is different one. He does not look like a boy. Doesn't get this my Kia. Look it says sixteenth birthday that is hardcore twenty five years. Lizzy McGuire sixteen. Channing Tatum in what was the one? She's the man. Yeah. Chaining Tatum in that where? Yeah. Old grown man, one with think that with that kind of mentality that if Bruce Wayne had taken on the Cowal, you know, at an earlier age as opposed to like training to get ready for to take on Gotham. He might have been bat boy. Eventually been Batman. Yeah. That's so interesting. That's close to what I call superman whenever he walks out the house wearing something weird. I'm like Super Bowl when at one of the things that really great about aquaman that I feel that people don't people don't realize because they think, oh, it's the guy that talks to fish kind of a thing. His rogues gallery is pretty impressive. I mean this dude stabbed dark side in the eye with his Trident aquaman. Did that you know that and and like some of his other roads like for instance, with like continuing with silver age with them out. Lana she yes, wasn't exiled Queen there was this whole thing where she okay, what's silver age is like comics are hell of a drug. There's so much. Okay. So she was exiled. She had Arthur on land knew that she couldn't bring him back with her. She did go back where then she was forced forced it was politics by the people to then Mary another suitor where she then had another baby orm ocean master and one of the between that him and black Manta thinker like the strongest my favorites super villains four acclamation. So let's get you know, that that happened back. Yeah. It says here armed disappeared after becoming an amnesiac and would resurface years later as Auckland's nemesis, ocean master. Yeah. But I think I think in silver age, it was like reverse where I think arm was on the on the on land. I think it was like that. But there are so many like this has been Reed hunt. Sorry times. I will say here's my my thing on black Manta is he's the only time in silver age DC that I'm like, yeah. I'm glad you called him black Manta because because when he pops off the helmet, and he is black. I'm like, oh, I didn't know thanks for putting it in your name, bro. Like, you'll need it for black lightning. And I see just be lightning. My guy, you know. Was like with them instance, marvel where they do black Mariah. I'm Luke cage. You don't you don't have to do that. You can just call her strong, Mariah or kick ass Mariah. But also black Manta's way harder than like Manta lightning. That's like, ooh, that's a good name. Like death Manta or something like black, man. It's like not just so, you know, so you know, who I am under this mask. So during this time L Clemenza ability to talk with fish, eventually expanded to full fledged telepathic communication with sea creatures even from great distances. He also retroactively developed a specific weakness akin to superman vulnerability to kryptonite kind of interesting that they kind of Akira Toriyama this where it was like going retroactively like oh, by the way. He also he's allergic to this. So had to come into contact with water at least once per hour or he would die prior to this story. Aquaman could exist both in and out of water indefinitely, which I think our current aquaman is like that. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like I can gather with what they're going for women. I feel like that was just silly like adding that ability they. Rather kind of a thing. They don't wanna make them to OPB. But he wasn't like I could see if his power set because you have someone like day more who, you know. This comparison is always going to be coming up because that was Marvel's aquaman first one. Yeah. Super strength. You know outside the sexy. Oh, dude. It's just like an arrogant. It's just like, yeah..
