"Story starts in the 2000 in the U. S. In this hedonistic world of wine auctions, Thies of places where the likes of Hollywood movie producers and Wall Street bankers are vying to outbid each other to get their hands on the world's finest wines. Became really kind of snobbish way to show off. There was a crazy world really, That's Laurent Pawn, so he wasn't part of this crazy world. But his wines were. He's a winemaker from Burgundy in France and the winds that he and his family make a famous among wine lovers on their pricey, But for many who attended these auctions, money was no object. You had all these people in the finance that we're earning so much money sometime Within seconds in the city, thousands in Los Angeles and newcomer arrived on the scene. His name was Rudy Kurniawan. He was a young, skinny, geeky guy. He said He was from Indonesia, and lots of people assumed that he was a trust fund kid with money to burn. He was always hosting dinner parties in Los Angeles and he became really well liked. People said he was warm and gracious. I have heard that crazy guy in California was buying wine like crazy. I mean, buying for half a million to $1 million wine every month, but not knowing who he was and what kind of when he was buying. But he was about to find out on the 23rd of April 2000 and eight Laurent Pawn. So got an email from a friend in New York. And he told me about this auction in which you could find wines from the main console. One of the wines looks suspicious. It was supposedly from Laurent's Vinyard from 1947, but they hadn't started making that particular wine until 1982. There is no way you can find these wines directly going from us. I decided to investigate immediately. He got the phone number of the auction air in New York on guy. Call him and saying OK, you are selling wines on some of the ones cannot exist. He says. It has been verified by experts and things and say, OK, Do you know who you are talking to? You are talking to the guy that we supposed to have produced these wines. I tell you, this cannot exist on bond ended the cold. Not nicely, I would say on then I called him later on the next day. And he says, Because I was insisting like crazy. You say Okay, I'm gonna withdraw the winds from the auction. But this is the kind of yes that you understand. Like, I know you didn't think you'd really do that. No, No, He just said yes. To me to be sure that I will not call him again. So the next day I jumped into a plane and arrive in New York. I mean, I think other people would have just given up. Maybe I don't know. You know, I didn't even think about it. I was starting to be a new Don Quixote. You know, I was sure that there is something to do to stop these people which were dirtying the spirit of wine. The wine inside the bottle. This is part of the culture part off nature. Apart off the History of humanity. And so I couldn't stand it. Laurent arrived at the airport and jump straight in a cab. I was in the room 10 minutes after the start of the auction. At that time, he was easy to recognize me. I had very long hair on the many people in the room knew me. Someone told to the auctioneer that I was here, and so when I got to the rounds wines, the auctioneer announced the request off the wondering all the possible winds will be withdrawing from the auction. And this was very noise in the room at that moment, very, very noisy and I stood up. We're not saying anything with my head and my eyes. I said yes. And how much were they going to.

And we're having all women chefs on the show today, and so we thought we would just call and you've been doing such a good job of morphing your business into something that can handle the cove ID era that we're in. Tell us about. You know how you kind of made the switch over and What your plans are for when things come back, OK, Thanks, Tom. You know, you know, a few weeks before the real close down, you know which, actually with the exactly year two today for us, I knew I believe the closed down What happened at some point I just felt it in my bones. So we started, TOC started to think about What I would be comfortable with people taking away right on by knew I didn't want a line that was making through that would then degrade over time. So we focused on Filled pasta. Fresh pasta do goes things like that on But first we've really was been what's in the walk in? I'm sure you know what we were all faced with. And so you know, the funny thing is I tried to sell a veal chop. Just you know, as if I was your butcher. Um and I don't think any sold and then we started roasting the veal chops and kind of, you know, making, you know. Sending you with something to reheat. That was exactly what I would have sold you in house and that took off and people said that was easy. I could do that. So I feel like I've spent the last year Um, I think about you almost every time, Tom because I worked for you. You know when we were both way back when and yeah. And You were the first chef owner. I worked for street were the first person that came and shops for a dinner party in the kitchen and I do it at home. And you never were good. You didn't really take our prep if you took our ingredients, you know, and, um and this is brilliant. And I do it to this day. And so I've tried Tonto. Think about You know what things that I would do that with? You know, in a pinch on give that to the guest and it's actually worked really? Well, it's worked really well. So Um, the on looking forward, and I am doing that a lot. Uh, this week in particular. I think they feel more optimistic than I have in a while. I think we're going to come back. Um Strong. I feel I feel pretty comfortable with that. Um, I don't think that whether it zeitgeist lines that have a set of X or y capacity or just people Still feeling a little apprehensive for indoor. Um I don't expect that we're gonna be as busy for you know the first six months or something. Um, but we're I think we're gonna come back in with a stronger emphasis on our tasting menu and just follow lip gets you already telling us for the 14 months or so before. Everything. Shut it down. Yeah, it's it's crazy time, Chef Terry. Yes, I think I've been following you, Holly and on your website, and I think you do a fantastic job. I think what if you've devoted to And would you just explain his differently? True? I mean, I looked at like everybody else. I look a lot of website and You do a fantastic job creating and making sure that the attention is given to details in terms off. Can I do this at home? Can I Is it simple enough for people to love and by in volume, and so on so forth. Very well. Father of congratulations to you. Thank you. It's you know, I think we're in that. We've always been in the business of problem solving. And, um And so the thing that I just got a really, um Nice female, Um, from definite Kimmel from Marcia and organs and kind of saying, What are you doing? Well, you know, she I think she gets the newsletter and In responding to her. I realized that what's been most important to me is it's the only way I know how to move personally, so this felt good for us was that I'm still the same restaurant. It's a little different, but I'm not saying I'm gonna reinvent myself. If something you know Limited Thai food for a year, you know or something, and and I will go and then come back and remember me and see me and we have. We have had a lot of guests that have reached out and said You were on our list. You know you were we were. We were going to celebrate our anniversary. And, you know, April 2000, you know we're going to come and they've tried this big new friends and I feel like at least I'm showing. As close as I can, who I am, you know, And so I think it keeps expectations a little safer for pickup and hopefully maybe it's a little bit of the selling quite later. We've built some goodwill with people. Let's talk about you as a woman. If you don't mind for a bit since its international woman's weak and you was a woman in the restaurant business, you feel at some point that things changed and it was a more hospitable environment for women. Do you feel like it still has a lot of work to do? And where do you Where do you stand with women in restaurants that right now? You know, I just got asked by someone the other day, they way spent the left like two years. At least without any engineering with an all female line. Hot one. There was a gentleman on dessert to non talent. On DPI. People kept coming up because we're standing in the kitchen dining room, Basically right on. Dad asked, you know, did you do that on purpose? No. So so I have seen more candidates. Which makes me feel like something positive happening. Um, I think one thing You know, Tom, You remember Ingrid. We worked with together then Ingrid. Incredibly talented, but you know, and you watched her except the industry rated. She was Your chef. Shipping it to different places. Stars and Dalia don't have a baby, you know, and and that What I have been consciously thinking of is how How do I myself But as an industry in general, make it easier, you know? How do we make her industry more flexible so that mothers and fathers can take enough time at home? You know, so that I mean, I don't really It's not. Hopefully it's not just a woman's issue. You know? Um, my current chef to cuisine Lauren has had to baby 12 working for me on band. And somehow, you know that I think we can build on our experience there with welcoming new people in the kitchen, But I think that the overall worked like balances is almost You know, that has historically been a taboo subject. I think in kitchens in particular because it's hard it's hard to achieve. Um and, um We need to find a way I'm trying to figure out a way looking forward that my kitchen can age. Um and I can't afford for them. Yeah, Yeah, exactly Eight age continue to age and and that we could support them. And because I know that when I keep staff, we get better. The consistency you know, you keep the right team and they continue to grow together are even Holly Smith of Cafe Juanita. She opened Cafe won it in 2000 is continuing the process of doing to go and getting ready for back indoor dining. If you want to check her out, go to her Web site. Or instagram at Cafe Juanita Wa. "He lived. On D I don't know what the next steps are for him. Um, you know these kind of reports, you get it, You get it all over the road. But there was some pushback over why there was so much media coverage about his accident. I just finished watching a documentary A few weeks ago about a about his life was about I think was on HBO 45 parts. It was just a fascinating journey. Um, the kind of took you through You know, Don't forget He was a little kid on the was that the Merv Griffin show or the Mike Douglas show? One of those talk shows his dad brought him out. Tol be on this show, and it was like a phenomenon was it was a golfing Phanom when he was a little little boy. And just driven, driven driven by his dad. All kinds of drama and controversy in his life. And now this terrible accident. Mike Vaccaro wrote a piece of the New York Post that will post it. Mike online dot com So you can read it. You know, as far as the details, and there are all kinds of reports right now, he was one witness said he was agitated and he was leaving some resort he was late for an appointment was driving too fast. Um, but he's alive. And that first reaction should be relief, right? Um Mike Vaccaro says the impact on his life well, his two kids still have a father. He still has a beautiful future. These air things to celebrate, even of golf is no longer going to be a practical part of that. It's also okay to mourn. That part may be hope for something more, he says. Maybe a part of of all of us realized already that Woods might never replicate the comet that blitzed across the sky in his prime almost 20 years ago, but we could still dream. We could still go lame gain glimpses. There was the 2019 Masters, his 15th and most unexpected major when the world's top golfers wilted in his presence. Just as they did back in the day After securing 1/5 green jacket. He embraced his kids, a circle of life moment that harkened to so many 72nd hole embraces he'd shared with his own late father, Earl. He's already made one remarkable recovery, a decade long odyssey that included a few self inflicted craters involving marital infidelity and drug use, as well as ruinous back and knee problems. He was a much younger man. Back then he was He's 45 now an age when the calendar begins to play tricks with everyone's body, even healthy bodies that once housed elite athletes. There was a day in April 2000. Few of us had followed Jack Nicklaus from the old media room at Augusta National into the brilliant son of a perfect Georgia Day. Two years earlier, Nicolas had taken one more remarkable Gloria's dance around Augusta's sprawling longe. He missed 99 because of hip surgery. That's why we followed him to a spot under the Eisenhower tree along the 17th hole. Nicholas said. What you need in this game more than anything or your legs. It's impossible to not think about that with Tiger Woods. Um Now he's back in the hospital, his body once again broken. Yes, we must root first that he enjoys many more decades with his kids. That he can handle. The excruciating pain he has no doubt suffering through without relapse. Those of the most important And maybe, he writes, We have seen the last of him at Augusta at Pebble Beach at ST Andrews at every prominent golfing place he used to command. Absolutely. If so, we must take the trade off. We can still hope for more than that. You'd like to think if Tiger Woods career has caught us one thing. It's okay to always want more. I really love that piece. My father in law, my late father in law had tickets to the Masters, and that is the most prized. Ticket in all of sports you can get into just about it's hard to get to the masters. You could get there, but it's tough. And in fact, it used to be that you could will your master's passes to your next. You know, you're the next generation down. They don't let you do that anymore. When you pass away, that's it. Your lifetime entreated to Augusta National to see the Masters is gone forever. I'm so grateful that I got to see Tiger Woods in person at Augusta. And I'll never forget it. I'm not a golfer. One of my friends are I like watching golf on TV a little bit, but I don't know much about the game. I know that what I saw in person. When Tiger Woods teed off Was something I'd never witnessed. He you don't even it doesn't do it. Justice when you see it on TV. It does not do it. Justice. It's like watching. Uh, a machine. That stroke that that graceful, powerful swing. And it happens so quick. It was. It was just It's a bucket list. I'm glad I got to see him. And, uh, Sadly, we may not see it again. Who knows? We'll have to find out what what the what the future holds. Um, coming up. I want you to do we have the clip for from Francis Collins. We do cut 10. I want you to hear this because this is so important. And we're gonna talk to Tim from Ohio because he and I mixed it up pretty good yesterday, and I think he's based on what my screeners telling me. He's a good sport. I might even have to, uh May have to give him a consolation or a prize. A reconciliation price. I may have to give him some my pillows or something. Because he called in aggravated with me clearly annoyed with me about the vaccination, and it's it is a big story. The Johnson and Johnson story today It's a big breaking story. The FDA has approved. We May they may have that rolled out by this weekend. The third vaccine And the numbers keep plummeting. This thing is headed in the right direction, and we're going to get back to normal. I don't care what Anybody tells you this country is going to get back? Life. Being opened again. Being normal again against his normals Weaken B. And we have A lot of people to thank, not the least of which Other people in the Trump administration and president Trump himself. Who spearheaded Operation Warp speed. Getting these vaccines as quickly as we've gotten them is Stunning and, thankfully, that's something that the head of the NIH Dr Francis Collins is willing to acknowledge. One of the few who is apparently this is what he said to access on HBO this week. Let's talk a little bit more of the Trump administration massacring aside. What did they get right?.

"The ESPN app insist XM Channel 80 phone numbers there for you to hang out with him at triple H. Say ESPN 8887293776. Another day. Another layer to the mess that is now and continues to be. The Houston Texans in the National Football League. I'm trying not to laugh, but It just gets more comical and comical and comical each and every day with this team. That's be honest right now they are the worst sports franchise in North America. It's on my Canada until my Mexico until the United States and all the ships at sea surrounding the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Houston, Texas right now, although worst organization In professional sports. You have one of your leading executives. More than 20 years. Responsible. All business functions of your Houston Texans club and Jamie Roots had enough as president. He said, You know what? I'm out? Jamie what I'm done. That's it. You guys have no idea what you're doing any more. This is not what I signed up for. Especially think about this. It has been barely a year plus. Since this team had a 24 nothing lead on the Kansas City Chiefs in a playoff game. They were running to cancel the cheese out of their own building. In a playoff game. And ever since then, you heights. Would be Houston, Texas. And it all got started in April. When Bill O'Brien head coach, they said, Can you please be the general manager, and I really don't want to do that. I just want to coach Well, we want you to do it. We believe you. They said okay, I'll do it for the team. Then what? By October, they moved off in Villa brought in this coach and general manager. They have a foreign 11 1 season when everything just deteriorated around them, Then they all season. Did things really got out of hand with the Houston Texans? This? Shawn Watson was told. Hey, we want to have input. I won't have input. We must have input when it comes to new GM in a new head coach. And then, when he made those kind of decisions or in the process of making those decisions, they've conveniently forgot to call the Shawn Watson and asked him What does he think? And meanwhile, the common denominator with all of this has been Jack Easterby. Running the football side Ever since April 2000 and 20 Has not even been a year and because of mostly Jackie's to be they have become the worst run franchise in North American sports. I really feel bad for Sarah Bar shop. She's the ESPN Texans reporter when she was option and Golden Junior. Don't forget. That show happens. 4 to 7 P.m. Eastern time on ESPN radio on the TV side ESPN. Plus, they asked her a question about the right direction involving the Houston Texans, and Sarah said, I absolutely believe that ownership believes they're making the right steps. Toe. Turning the culture Now. That doesn't mean to Shawn Watson necessarily believe that or maybe other people in the building, but we've heard from Nicholas area we've heard from comic there, and that's what Shaun Lupton wanted, writes a new culture Now maybe this is not the culture change he wanted. But they believe that they're putting their organization in the best position to go forward. They certainly hope it's withdrawn, locked in, But they also understand that they have toe make it right for everyone else in the building, too, and they believe that either the right steps to take out I don't know that Jane your interest resigning. It's part of that, because that was the decision by him, But I think just some of the moves made. That's what happens when you hire a new head coach of the new general manager. There's just some transition and turn over in the building, and I think that's what we're seeing now, but he's been doing that transition and turn over. He understands what that's all about. And after 20 years, he said, I'm out. I'm done. I don't want to be bothered. Right now, the Houston Texans laying claim with a bullet that they are the worst run professional franchise in North American sports. I can't wait to the movie comes out in five years about this. I'm Freddie Coleman of Ready Effort. Simmons on ESPN Radio. The ESPN happens is XM Channel 80. We talk about the Big 10 Basketball League being a meat grinder Boy, I will understand that coming into the night's game against number 25 rockers. They have lost four out of their last five where they had enough of that they wanted tonight 79 to 66 all American Center Luke guards was terrific as usual, 22 points and 10 rebounds. A pleasure to bring him into joining us all about that victory for number 15, Iowa on Freddy and Fitz Simmons. And look, We know you had a tough loss Sunday against any of you lose by two before they lose Ohio State by four. What was said going into this game, not just about breaking the losing streak of breaking the losers, kid but playing better basketball. I think it was more about what was said. Then what was done. We had two terrific days of practice. Now you lose by a game one on a game that you felt like you played well enough to win. It's tough when you play two games in a row. I mean, really all the four losses, five games freshly cut the lead in the second half of one people to close it out on D. I think we have to really good days. Surprises. Where were you just determined that they were gonna come here, come out here and get a great win against a great team. The workers there their plan. There's a basketball then you're obviously a 145 roll on down to play hard team like that. Be able to control them and get a win. It is big for a group of this group's confidence going forward. So it was great having CJ out there as well. Yeah, I saw the look on your face. Look after you lost on Sunday and I told my wife, Denise, I said, Man, I would not want to be rockers or two on Wednesday having to play Luka Garza and I was how much of that was in your mind to say You know what? We're tired of this. We know we're better than this, no matter how good the big tennis We saw, you know, I was gonna make sure that I came out here and put everything I had in case things that make sure we came out with the W way just we've been putting some good games together for stresses and not being able to finish about. Ah, thunderstorms likely tomorrow, though, but Hey, Another week goes by and the war on cops continues. Well, the latest person to pile on is none other than former vice president Sleepy Joe Biden, the man who wants to be president. Now. Joe Biden said in an interview Wednesday that some funding of the police should and I'm quoting him. Absolutely close quote be directed from the police. To who knows where else. He didn't specify that. I think that's commonly referred to as de funding the police. Check this out. Dave, can you play that? As surplus military equipment for law enforcement. They don't need that. The last thing you need is an up armored Humvee coming into a neighborhood just like the military invading. They don't know anybody. They become the enemy. They're supposed protecting these people. So my generic point is that we agree that we can redirect some of the funding. Yes, Absolutely. One of the things that we also need to be doing is fundamentally changing the way and I'm pushing it for years changing the way we deal with our prison system. Well, he's right about the last part of it. We do need criminal justice reform. We've got a little bit of it, but we could still use more. But I'll tell you what that sure sounds like defunding the police to me. And then he talks about the cops coming in with some of the military equipment that they get, like a military invasion. Well, you know what if you wanna bitch about cops having those protective armored vehicles why don't you talk Vice President Biden to the police officer in Cincinnati who got shot in the head. The last go round on these rights. Thank God. Helmet stopped the bullet. Yeah, I think they do need that kind of equipment. And then he says, cops had become the enemy. He's falling right into docs and the squad and all the rest of those people's rhetoric about the cops. This man Joe Biden and again out Take pleasure in saying this. I think something's cognitively wrong with them, and I think that's eventually going to come out. But he will do or say just about anything. To appease the left in his party. He's proven that he shameless is also clue us. Well, then you got Seattle and this from Fox News. Seattle City Council members were pressed during a Wednesday meeting to divert millions of dollars in funds slated for the police department, too. Community programs. While others Centaurus, moving 911 dispatchers away from department control. Now, I'm sure you're all aware of the problems we've had with our 901 call center here. Not many when you compare him to the hundreds of thousands of calls that we get, But one thing that emerges from that morn anything else you need experienced people handling the 911 calls and they want to move moving away to some other department. I don't know. Maybe that the sanitation Department or something. But anyway, both of these proposals were made by decriminalized Seattle, which is a coalition of groups calling to defund the police department by at least 50%. Well, this woman, Angelica Pizarro, She's a representative from de Criminalized Seattle. She says We believe 9 11 dispatch should be removed from S P d control. Unbelievable. 91911 calls should be referred whatever appropriate to non police responders. And again, I posed the question. Who would that be? She went on to say, she told the council. More than 300 groups have endorsed its demands to reallocate portions of the police department's $409 million budget and There are also advocating for the release of protesters slash rioters although they didn't refer to him is that The release of protesters slash rioters arrested amid weeks of chaotic demonstrations without criminal charges, release him without charges. Bomber tell you some some good news on the war on cops. Actually, Couple things. Good news this week. If you live in Hamilton County City, Cincinnati. Ain't no protesters going to be released here. Thanks to our county prosecutor Joe Deters, and we got the news this week that 14 people have been indicted. In 12 separate incidents stemming from recent protest in the city of Cincinnati. Protest slash riots. I don't know why those in the media have such a hard time saying it Anyway. Joe announced that on Thursday all of the indictment stem from a series of protests in the city from May 30th through June 3rd and the protests, of course. And I do agree with us actually began as a legitimate response to the killing George Floyd. But then the problem is, as those 14 felony charges counts. Felony charges bear out. I turned into a riot. The charges include improperly handing, firearms breaking and entering assault vandalism of the 14 people indicted Thursday, Deeter said Around 25% of the individuals were not local. And here's a Joe Deeter said. They took advantage of what was basically a peaceful protest and put our community in our residents in danger. As your prosecutor. I will not put up with that. Goes on to say I will defend a person's right to peacefully protest and always will. But when individuals used that occasion to loot to attack our police, and they're equipped and damage private, public public property I'm done with them. Finally, Joe closes by saying the charges today will not be reduced. They will not be dismissed. And that will apply as long as I am your prosecutor now. I'm not saying Joe. Copy that off of me, but that's exactly what I did. In the April 2000 won riots. No plea bargains. You either plead guilty as charged, or, you know, put 12 in the box because we're going to trial. And I want to thank Joe Deters for his tough action on that. That's what's needed to send a message at. Hey, you want to come down here and.
