Even the fiercest rivals can come together when they have a common threat, and that's what's happening in the financial sector right now. The biggest of the big banks, including JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and Bank of America, are teaming up to create a new digital wallet people can use to shop online, according to The Wall Street Journal. The new product will take aim at the likes of PayPal and Apple Pay. This isn't the first time these banks have worked together, along with several other banks, they own early warning services, which is the parent company of money transfer service, Zelle. You've heard of that, right? The same company will create and manage this new digital wallet, which does not yet have a formal name. And it will operate separately from zell, which only lets users transfer money between accounts the journal reports. Since the pandemic, the mobile payments market has boomed as consumers first look for contactless solutions, then embrace the convenience of digital wallets. The FIS global payments report estimates that within the next two years, digital wallets will be used for roughly a third of in person transactions. Apple Pay is the biggest digital wallet with more than half a billion users, no big surprise there, right? The tech companies also have been dipping its toe further into the financial services pool with other services lately, including Apple Pay later, a buy now pay later service and an interest bearing savings account in partnership with Goldman Sachs. Through strategic partnerships and a wholly owned subsidiary that handles lending for its Apple Pay later, you know, some people think apple is looking more and more like a FinTech company. So how is the big bank's wallet different from apples? Wallet? Well, the pitch from the big banks wallet is that in addition to the convenience of a digital wallet, it will be managed by the banks which will in theory have better fraud protection than retailers. Bank rate senior economist Ted rossmann told CNBC. Or will it? Early warning systems zal platform has recently been under fire from Congress for problems with fraud and incorrect payments. CNN reported that fraud claims more than doubled in the year after the pandemic struck, according to a congressional investigation. And that less than half of unauthorized transactions were returned to customers. Bank rates rossmann also doubts that consumers will want or need another digital wallet, and that the banks will be able to come up with something compelling enough to make them want to switch in the first place. At least one member of the banking consortium knows how hard this road can be. JPMorgan shut down Chase pay its own attempt at a digital wallet after only a year in operation. Alison Clark, a Forrester research analyst told computer world that chase pays quote Achilles heel was an inability to convince retail stores to embed the software into their point of sale and online systems, which will also be key to success for the new platform. Well, if at first you don't succeed, you know what they say. Try try again. Seems to be the big banks mantra for now. It likely won't be long before we see the verdict, as customers vote with their digital wallets. From wondering, this is business awards daily. "Pay mobile payments system. The EU has sent apple a formal statement of objections with the preliminary view that Apple has abused its dominant position in mobile wallets on iOS. Now, one of the reasons why this sounds like the EU is picking on Apple because I don't think anyone would disagree that when you use Apple Pay, that should be sort of a closed box. Payments are tricky. We want the bestest security. If ever there was an argument for walled garden, it's on our payments and personal data, privacy, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But the EU is making one very critical, very important anti competitive distinction as it pertains to especially iPhones. That Apple has locked down hardware like NFC and preventing other payment systems from utilizing the same consumer hardware that Apple Pay gets to benefit from. NFC is a broad standard that companies have been working to use for payments and services. We shouldn't have a completely locked box where only Apple Pay gets to benefit from a standard like NFC and that Apple is allowed to exclude other systems from operating with proper security with proper verification, the right credentials, apps should still have to play ball with apple's terms of service. It's not like we're just saying, hey, open it up for everybody. But again, Apple likes to break standards to force their own proprietary solution, and then they hold that threat over carriers and retailers. Oh, if you don't want us to do this on our iPhones, then I guess we just won't sell iPhones in your country anymore, and that freaks enough business people out, they're not willing to weather the storm of angry consumers that can't have their apples. So that to me is an actual regulatory issue. The whole notion of singling out your own services to the exclusion of competitors on something like a smartphone is absolutely worthy of an investigation on anti competitive behavior. And that's kind of frustrating. Up initiative saying good morning to everybody as I drink some more coffee. I'm going to take a quick sec just to side step because this is another regulatory action that Apple is facing and that the EU is trying to build up momentum for let's say the EU does properly get everything in place. This is the hard mandate by 2024. Every device that plugs in with the cable needs to have USB-C. If that date happens, where 2024 is the cutoff. I don't even remember what the actual cutoff date would be. In the proposed sort of restrictions, if it's 2024, 2025. Who wants to say that at that cutoff date, that's when we see the announcement on a portless iPhone. Apple has been working so hard to make proprietary charging even more exclusive to their own products. MagSafe is returned to the MacBook, MagSafe is basically just QI charging with a magnet. It's not new, fancy, or exclusive. It's literally the same charger. Apple couldn't make their own version of a wireless charger. But they can sell a proprietary idea that locks the phone in place with the magnet. Drop a one in chat if you think the second the EU succeeds in mandating USB-C. We see a portless iPhone. I just kind of want to see who thinks that that's likely drop a zero in chat if you think they'll put a USB C port on the iPhone. So Dave burns is saying MagSafe, bullpup is saying MagSafe. Dusta Dory, MagSafe, puppet Jared without a doubt. Muffin ish says that they will do USB-C. Again, I think that would be better for consumers. I don't think that would be better for apple's bottom line because they can't license USB-C and make additional money off of it, and they'll make way more money. Selling MagSafe chargers, ted-talks, tech, one hell of a boy, fat 88, 93, I'll say USB-C iPhone. A bullpup, that's not the question. I completely agree. Especially in iPhone pro with USB-C, to me, that would be a real pro device. But when has apple ever demonstrated that they care what I think. Apple is looking out for what's going to make them more money and the lightning connector makes apple a lot more money. So then if they can convince everyone to switch over to wireless chargers, you've got an entire entrenched consumer base, all looking to buy new chargers for their new iPhone and those chargers don't come in the box. "And across the globe, we are seeing the catastrophic results of the fossil fuel industry's decades long campaign of deception. Plastic pollution is seeping into our waterways poisoning our environment and blighting our landscapes. Enough is enough for more than half a century, the plastics industry has engaged in an aggressive campaign to deceive the public perpetuating a myth that recycling can solve the plastics crisis. So this is not action, this is not reform, but this is the first step in the examination of the possibility that in the future, at some point, we might take action against the petrochemical industry. We got to keep that on our radar. Exactly, Dave burns. See, this is why I'm being so cagey about this story. Dave writes, oh good. By the time I'm 40, these companies will get a slap on the wrist. We're going to find them ten $1000. Per year? No, just once. So yeah. Just the heads up. The only reason why I'm really picking at a state attorney attorney general. And the state of California is whenever it comes to environmental policy like this. If it's the fossil fuel industry, the plastics industry recycling, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. There are only a couple of states that can kind of generate enough momentum that it influences national policy. So if the attorney general here in California actually does manage to move anything on this on this idea, that starts a ball rolling that can affect the rest of the country. If California enact stricter regulations, corporations looking to do business with California, which I believe is like the world's 6th largest economy all by itself, they're not going to make a special rule for California and then do business in the rest of the country the same way. Again, every single time we see net neutrality policy or environmental policy, California has leverage. So that's why I think this one's worth just keeping on your radar. So oh yeah, see fat 88, 93. Again, let me read what he wrote. Speaking of plastics, my countries have been slowly replacing plastics with papers for restaurants and eateries. Yes, a part of this and why I feel like this is such a turning point in our perception of the problem is for people my age, we've been selling this myth of personal responsibility and consumers fronting all of the change in behavior. You've got to do this. You've got to separate all of your waste. You've got to put plastics in here, reduce reuse, recycle. It's up to the consumer. It's up to all of us. I mean, it's hilarious that we're still selling the same myth. For one of my reviews dot org videos, I talk about repurposing old gadgets. And I literally show that clip of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the 80s, like cutting up the plastic rings on our soda cans. Yesterday, my daughter is watching some cartoon about girls fighting crime and one of the problems they encounter is a turtle that has a plastic ring stuck around its beak. And oh, why can't people just recycle their plastics? Like, 30 years separation. Almost 40 years separating my childhood experiences with PSAs to my daughter's experiences. And we're literally still putting cartoon turtles on screens with plastic soda can rings, like we're not we're not making the situation better. So again, if California manages to find something there that's actually like actionable or regular at a corporate level, then I think that might inspire some actual momentum on change. Because the plastics industry needs some kind of accounting. They get to profit because they're not responsible for cleaning. Like they make this stuff, we buy it, we consume it, we throw it away, but there should be some additional costs on what to do with it at the end of life. In much the same way that we pay a tax here in California when we buy a new monitor or a TV. There's a display tax. And that goes into display drop offs. So we don't have to pay at a Best Buy when our TV breaks and we drop it off, we already paid for that service up front. And that's the kind of longer term money conversation that I think needs to happen at a corporate level. So yes, we can only change so much of our individual, a detail is saying something that I can probably, you as an individual have to make so many changes while multi-billion dollar companies continue to pollute without any ramifications. Sure, that's the solution. That's the conversation we need to start having and generationally, I think younger people are inclined to lean into that conversation. It's unfortunately people my age and older, especially older who are still in seats of power that derive direct benefit from certain types of lobbying behavior. Dave branes is calling me a commie. In other regulatory news, the EU is declaring Apple Pay anti competitive and even, I don't think anyone's going to be too surprised that I agree with their assessment. So this came by came out of the verge written up by James Vincent and Thomas ricker. Apple has been hit with an antitrust accusation by the European Union over its exclusion of rivals from its Apple.

Firstly what do you need in order to use apple pay. Well when we're talking. Iphones you will need a least an iphone six or above and also you'll need your bank to support apple pay in the first place now. Most if not all major banks support apple pay and if your doesn't you will be informed by that during this up process so don't worry about it too much okay to sell apple pay. We need to use the waller up on your iphone. So let's open that up artist you siri open wallet while heading get started with apple. Pay a photo containing credit card at credit or debit card to wallet at button pretty straightforward. You know what to do as double tap on the adiponectin at loading this next screen just gives you a little bit more information. I'm not gonna go through it here but feel free to if you want to. Let's just double tap on the continue button at the bottom of the screen. Continue but now. This next screen is the important one. So let's swipe through camera viewfinder position your card in the frame. This is actually equal so you can just hold your car in front of your rear cameron your phone and it will try and read all the information. It needs automatically curl. We'll try that in a second. Now i can tell this because the numbers and information is embossed on my card and shoe. It's the same for every card out there. But i could be wrong so i know which is the front. Which is the back of my card. Okay so here's how i do it firstly. Make sure there's plenty of light is no good trying to do this in a dark room. I put my card on a flat surface. Then placed the rear camera of my iphone directly on top of the middle. FlickType Pulling iPhone Keyboard App After Continued Rejection Issues
"We're talking about the flick type keyboard right. This is the flicked tight keyboard. Which a lot of people use sean. You know mortar better than i because he used this. You loved it. Yep absolutely so basically allows you to just tap the screen where you think the letter would be. You don't need to find time you're moving your finger around waiting to voice over to say s or whatever it may be you simply tap where you should be on standard quirky keyboard and guesses what you're trying to type and the magic behind is the guests is almost no perfect every time it's so quick to type Can't see the screen. Honestly i use it for so many things and saves me so much time. And i am gutted by this Well at mosman looking at the article from the verge forest this week and mark. What's the problem. Why why is it going away. Because that's what seems to be happening. Well they've had some history where apple been rejecting the app because it requires what they call full access to the device itself. Now this is something that apple has allowed in the past. And there's not a bit an issue but It's been rejected. A couple applets rejected a couple of weeks ago and they've tried reaching out to apple this nine times a week with no success. They feel apple's ignoring their attempts to contact them. And it's something that they've argued in the past and actually got passed at apple said he had no problem. You know. we've we've understand your clarification we're gonna let through. But now after several rejections over the exact same thing they just kind of giving up. They sit apple's just not responding to them and they feel that assist final straw there. They've been this developer. Been pretty vocal about other issues. They've had You know as voice over user. That had a lot of problems in the past with different apps and different temps and they're just tired of the process The the one thing they did notice that the apple watch version is not really going away that will exist In the flick type added self so if you have that you will be able to continue to use that on the apple watch is just. They're not gonna continue putting it out on the devices themselves. So that means that they're just gonna kinda whittle away when it's no longer no longer valid.

So i think that apple's working with goldman to figure out what is the best way to move from just a credit card that they launched recently to now this next big thing we know that proximity payment and the digital wallets are huge for retail. My personal opinion though is how much friction does that remove for a consumer. And if. I don't know ahead of time when i'm thinking about a big purchase that this is an option that's available to me. Does it matter. And i think apple pay is really figured that one out because it's available on everything i think because they're the ones fronting it interesting fullest there so pos Pay later service. Yeah it's gonna be automatically downloaded onto those millions of funds in the country. Forty seven percents of people in america have an iphone Pretty much everyone else has has android device in terms of a top three. Buy now pay services clown after pay and then the firm out painter firm shares dropped ten percent after this news in terms of the market. Buy now pay later. Forty five million people using the service this year. That is up from twelve million two years ago so from twelve to twenty five to forty five this year over the last couple of years. That forty five million calculates to about sixteen percent of the population. The us at least it's also interesting by by generation. Suzy bs bhai now. pay later. Uses at the penetration For gen z. "Folks back today in other news. How will people shop points. Businesses fully reopened the potential of new in-store virtual reality experiences and how much of a splash. Apples buy now pay later feature. May story one lucid and hub. Spa asked three hundred folks from north america's not the largest sample size in the world. Are they asked them. Which best describes how your shop wants businesses fully reopened after cover nineteen shutdowns. Most thirty five percents said thou shop almost completely online thirty five percent. Twenty one percent said they'll do an equal mix of in store and online. Just six percents said. I'll shop almost completely installed despite this for us to research police. That twenty nine percent of all shopping will be done online by twenty twenty four including ten percents of food and drink purchases. Thanks to cook and collects and curbside pickup. Suzy how do you account for the discrepancies. Between what people say they'll do and what this research company and ours actually think will happen when it comes to the relationship between people shopping in store and the frequency in store and online. That's a great question. I think there's two parts of that one is people are probably going to be buying more expensive things online and that's gonna drive up that ratio online versus stores. But i also think. I mean those are once in a blue moon type of purchase right for a couch or tv. What i think is happening. Which is at thirty five percent which obviously higher than the twenty five percent penetration. Thirty five percent of people think that they're gonna shop because they're buying everyday things like milk and water and heavy things and toilet paper and who needs to lug all that stuff around especially if you live in an urban area so while i do think that the numbers are seemingly different. I think the behaviors explain that in terms of what are people buying online versus in store. I think it is clear that apparel will always be a store purchase. Unless it's something that is a replenishment item like a undershirt or socks because that you don't really need to try it on but if you're trying to buy a pair of jeans online that it's really a difficult experience and so it is so much easier to go into the store. What's critical to think about is at the store itself is changing and the role of the store is changing and that's not because of the pandemic. It's something that retailers have always been thinking about. I think the just accelerated needing to do that so stores are now like many warehouses to help. Facilitate things like click and collect and they're also. There's always been this idea around stores and entertainment. And i think that dovetails really nicely into your next story as the idea around stores being an important place for an experience and for people to understand brand are critical right and so you could definitely go to a store and be shopper. Not a purchaser. Because you went to the store you looked for whatever you wanted and then you purchased it online one. More example of what i find fascinating is a one retailer last week or the week. Before announced that they're going to do the reverse of click and collect where you can go into the store clicking by all the things you want and then they'll ship it to your house and it seems like a really big idea right you go you scandal items you want and it goes to your house however i know firsthand that there's at least one company that was doing that before which shall remain nameless but is part of my legacy experience where i mean. You could have gone to macy's well before the pandemic ordered something online and it got shipped to your house because it was either too bulky or too heavy or they didn't have it in store. So i do think that stores are important. And they're here to stay when you're talking about the products just not for a second and it does seem as though they're all going to be kind of a splintering and fracturing of the products that we think about when we buy them online and the ones we buy the in store like. You're saying like paper towels. You don't need to see them and they're going to be maybe a come become more an online product and then there's things like jeans which will be more of an instore priority does seem like there's going to be Products in general. And then they'll break into the kind of two camps and where people buy those talking about the store. Our second story story to a harry potter's new flagship store. In new york visitors can check out to new virtual reality. Experiences code wizards take flights and chaos. Hogwash notes richard callings of ad week. The vr experience include headsets broomsticks and hand controls both became available last thursday july fifteenth and now each about thirty minutes long costing thirty four dollars mr callings of ad week rights that quote near him. The harry potter stores use of vr points to how retailers might captivate consumers and attract shoppers to walk through the physical doors. Closed quote your thoughts on this. In-store virtual reality experience. So i am not a harry potter fan. I know it's very shocking. But i do think that it sounds very cool right. It's everything to the wand. There's the wand is included for a measly thirty dollars which to me sounds quite expensive. Actually but obviously they did there consumer research and they figured out that under thirty five dollars people are willing to spend a dollar a minute and they're willing to spend downplayed how people are crazy. They'll spend any amount they they've definitely low. But you could have put the price way up harry potter. who knows. Maybe they will do that after you know lawn. See that they could crazy lineups among they'll start charging more what i do question any. Vr experience from an in store perspective is does it actually lead to buying or is it just a fun. Entertainment brand recognition type of activity. Or does it help. The store increase their sales per square foot and does it. Spur people who wanna buy things in that moment in the store or do they get more wrapped up inexperienced ended up going away and maybe they end up. You know maybe they see in the movies and they end up buying the books because they feel more of that world yeah. There are other vr experiences or a our experiences that are potentially more buying sort of worthy in terms of like the digital fitting rooms. That might help you visualize outfit so you don't necessarily need to try the earrings or the shoes on and you can figure out if that's gonna look good and you're going to buy it so i do think there is some connectivity between vr ar experiences and making purchases and facilitating but i think vr for the sake of vr. If you're not removing a friction point for the consumer than it's really just entertainment doesn't need to be retail some of the prices of the ultras devices the recent ones the driving the consumer price down but still two three hundred bucks for a headset can be expensive. Entry point for a lot of folks and so businesses have more money in. This sounds like this experience was very expensive. They worked to your studios to produce this experience but Stores with more money are able to offer people the gateway into the virtual reality world. we forecast About nine percent of the american population via headset uses Next year we'll go up to just under ten percents That translates into Close to north or south of thirty million people's folks story. Three apple is working on a by now. Pay later feature of its own court apple pay. Later as bloomberg reports apple is working with goldman sachs to make every apple pay transaction possible by now pilates. Ibm pl opportunity. Where you can pay in installments. No applecart necessary uses pay four interest free installments for interest. Free installments of two weeks scored apple paying four or the other option is to pay interest over several months as apple pay monthly installments. Very appropriate name those bloomberg suzy. I haven't used this one yet. I mean haven't played with it. Yeah i saw it and the links. I couldn't get it. I just not right phone anyway. So the but i I think it's interesting to be able to visualize what you have to do. Something and so the idea of being able to use a artillery. I think that's the idea. Here is not so much whether it's to to actually use the subway but to do something that requires a series of steps that we can visually before you got there. You can visualize seeing if you look at In some cases When people have been. There's just so many things that we do that we pre visualize how that's going to work and we practice it and we did it and sometimes that's true. I rehearse it. Yeah well. I think that sometimes though i know that stressful for folks around Travel and so and so forth knowing what it's going to be like supposed to go. And how much do it and and i know that if i go to airport i'm always like okay. I don't know where where to go. And how this is going to look and and But but i think so. I think that that might be the case of you. Know i know. I avoided the bay. Area Bart bay area rapid transit or whatever for years. Because i just didn't work. He was like oz drive. once i started using it. I was like that was crazy. This is so much easier. Like why would i ever got a point where you never drive. You never drive into the city. Always take part. So i think it just depends on you know getting over a hump i think makes sense. So it's kind of a tra- it's i've i have now. I am now in the new york city. How you're gonna see this. Can you see this over my shoulder and he puts that apple. tv yeah i can. I can airplay sure. I've put a new york city subway in the middle of our studio. Food industry The apple pay dot apple. I had no idea so. Then when you get in there with your iphone or i guess it would work with an ipad You'll be able to. I mean that's it's yeah. I take alex's point. I just don't know if this is the best example of that. I don't know that that's better than just simply having a to d experience where you can navigate Like it's like a video game. I'm trying i'm trying to imagine holding holding. The phone is the thing. I need to tap to get through that archway. I'm trying to figure out how much whether it would be easier for me to envision that with having to look at this phone and keep the with. The phone is not only the tool that i'm using but it's also my view on what i'm actually doing versus here. Fine here is a. Here's a here's a not even a vr but fork gamified version of this kiosk. You've got your phone in your hand. Here's what you're going to see zubin and take a look at what the touch pad looks like. Here's what it looks like. Here's what the display the confirmation display on that On the kiosk gonna look like it's. I wasn't really impressed with this because it just really felt like apple trying really really hard to make era thing without yet making the case for it. I reminded me. I actually now that i think of it. It reminded me of the first examples they were giving a of quicktime where there were showing the. Oh look now. When you have a word processing document you can have a video of a rocket launching in the middle of as as in the place of a paragraph and well. I have never wanted to do that. And i don't want i don't know how many copies of this page after print to make animation come through and it and for that reason it took me a little while before i realized exactly. What a big thing quicktime actually was. I think that apple's in the same place but they are right now where this is nice. It's a nice technology demo. It's fun i'm just not sure. I were trying to teach people to get more accustomed to. Here's what's going to be liked to navigate the new york city subway system. I'm not sure that would be the most advisable The most rich experience and give them well. I i i. There's there's times for instance when i've arrived at Airports in foreign lands like dubai or cairo. Where i think it'd be kind of cool just to kind of know what my path is going to be getting off the airplane and walk through it. I think that would be kind of neat But but but that's limited use. So what would it be better with. I mean i've we all. I'm sure before i go to a different city I will. If i'm going some place i will use google street view and actually walk the route. I don't think and i don't think that would make that any better than simply having a having a flat experience in front of me. No familiar with self my myself. I'm just trying to look. Yeah exactly. Because i can't read the signs and stuff and i mean this is really what are what are kind of what's cool about having hand-held technology Is you know you can read now. You can read signs in other languages. Yeah and another google. That's the problem with google. They they give us these great demos that google may i uh-huh but they don't actually. I'm waiting for my damn fox. I wanna follow that. My fath- wrote the street. And i want to be able to take picture through chain link fence and have the chain link. Fence go away. How about this for five years later. We can do that Sonos his pissed off. I'm sorry sonos about apple adding siri to third parties using home pod. This is just a yet another company. Saying you know you really regulate these guys and only. "Part of a great shopping experience ipad support it's baffling and that could get away with so much more by encouraging people to work through a browser instead of through an approved apple app sobia agree with you. I don't understand why they're so adamant against making a decent I pat experience or decent desktop experience for that matter. Wb has made speaking of shopping. Ted lasso official gear available. You could be really obvious. Have a giant ted lasso on your t. shirt or mug. You could get a little less obvious by having quotes like via gold fish or smells like potential. Or i believe in believe what is. I've watched headlines. I don't remember be a goldfish. Was that all about that. Was from like the first or second episode where The one of the when the rookies was getting screwed up because he's missing his homeland and ted. I've got after he got dressed down by the other people on the field like ten brought him over. You know goldfish only remembers things like ten seconds. You know you you should try and say forget what happened ten seconds ago. Just keep going well. Apparently it's very popular. There's quite a few. But i think if you really a serious ted lasso fan. You'll get the want rich. Afc richmond personalized jerseys. Which no one will get. Unless they're ted lasso fan. They might just think apple. Feel about this like apple. A couple of things coming up season two. Of course ted lasso season two of central park There's a new documentary called fathom about humpback whale culture. This one i know. You wanna see andy. Who are you charlie brown. A documentary about charles shulz and the impact his work That should be good. Schwager dune which we've been reading about for awhile. It's a keegan. Michael key fred. Armisen kristen channel within cecily. Strong the characters discover the magical town of schmidt. Geduhn on a backpacking trip. Where everyone acts like. They're in a nineteen forties musical intriguing. That comes out july six timothy. They're they're really trying to reach me. I feel it working interesting. It's a very non in some people are saying it's h. I don't think it's quite like but it is a very eclectic interesting not programmatic entirely franchise driven strategy which is very different from any of the other. It's fairy aptly when i read about Shows like coda a coming of age story about a high school senior. The only hearing person or in a death deaf family code for child of deaf adults. That's that's the kind of apple show. I i would expect apple to produce. it's it's about. It's about doing good and feeling good more than it is about high drama Th the pbs sort of mentality. yeah meaning that. It's okay if they want everything that they do to be something that they can be proud of and or excuse me maybe to the point. They want nothing. That kind of looks to state distasteful or that they they can be ashamed of and another thing that i was just reading about the not specifically about apple but about These streaming exclusives that might give apple a big advantage Turns out that a lot of Production houses are kind of upset with disney. And they're upset with netflix. Netflix specifically because the business model. Netflix does means that it's It's it's not about doing one hundred episodes than going into syndication. It's about well. We own this show because of the deal that you struck with us. It's we're going to get a lot of heat And a lot of visibility from you for two seasons. But we're not gonna we're not going to continue to renew their show once it starts going long enough. That actor's gonna asking for raises that produces are going to start asking raises. So you're going to get two seasons and that's it so if they can offer a better deal to producers at at apple tv For apple tv saying that we won't. We won't walk you into apple tv. You will be able to sell your Your series outside of episodes of the series Outside of the apple. Tv platform That would be a great thing. I'm sort of. I'm sort of in sort of a a an unfortunate both as new series on i think. Amc as a kevin kevin blank himself. That i'm super super interested in such a creative idea but i can only i'm not gonna sign up for amc or amc. Just so. i can watch this one show. But i'm more than willing to give the cup of russian company twenty two dollars to buy the entire season on google play or on apple an apple. Tv and once you get locked into these things were the only place to see the mandalorian or the only place to see. The documentary is by getting you access to this to the streaming service. It kind of it really does put everything into a castle and you kind of have to be like mareo and risk rescue the content of the very very end it only to find your content is another council. I with these this weird string he said all my devices are named after format strings which resolved to the f. word with poorly developed devices. The main focus of the investigations will be on the operation of the app. Stores enables apple in many ways to influence the business activities of third parties. They're concerned about integration across several markets. The magnitude of its technological and financial resources. And it's access to data. It's an investigation These things take time. Yeah but they're they're fighting battles on so many fronts right now i. I believe that they've probably at this point. Put more money into their into their legal department than they do in our d. at some point. Because how can they deal. How can they deal with all of these approaches everywhere. But a lot of money dr indy. It's like what i'm joking. I'm joking but it's it's they've never been this is this is something where they don't if they don't attack this aggressively and precourt in the entire planet. They are going to have the most of their a lot of their too. Much of their work is going to be spent just dealing with regulations and i and localizing not only their products but also their business operations. There's a Russia just a pass a lock just past the russian legislature saying that a company as big as apple has to have local office or locally incorporated company inside russia to allow to be to conduct business strictly to make sure that they will be forced to comply with every russian law and regulation that they intend to put put ford in the future. So you can't just simply say oh well. It's not a russia based company. he can't touch us. This is this is most and so now that you're talking about creating entire bureaucracy and making sure that you are you that you are essentially doing whatever you have to do in order to keep inside these markets. This is not what they were doing when they were two hippies garage. This is not what they're doing when they were a humble. Two trillion dollar company A few years ago. That was not facing a whole lot of regulation. I don't think anything to do with business. Say you know. This is every time these german investigations or you investigations particularly. They're often stimulated by complaints. From competitors in this case axel springer the the the german publisher and facebook. And i guess that's how it works. But it's like that's disappointing. I think this is. I think i think a lot of this comes down to intelligence so i think this is. I think all of these things are getting pushed by the intelligence agencies over having the people's privacy let's see let's make sure we're clear that these laws are not being generated by businesses or they're being generated by the intelligence communities are pushing this forward you know. So the thing is is that they're pushing it through their representatives. They're pushing it through those things but what they want is into the phone. We can talk about apple leaking stuff. That's why apple draws one line. They don't draw lines across all your meta data. They don't draw lines across your icloud. They give that over whenever it's ask for but they won't let people end of the phone and it's making them crazy. Yeah and so the thing is is that what they wanna do is figure out a way to break that up so that they can get in. You know once once this this kind of integrated solution gets broken up. It basically creates cracks for the nsa crates cracks for you know the five. Is you know so. So the thing is is that what we have to realize. That's that's what's happening here like. It's not it isn't about the business stuff. They're using the business as one of the things. I think there's other reasons people are doing. There's a lot of push push coming. I'm sure that's the case i mean. Certainly the reason. Russia watson office for all these companies in russia's so there's somebody to arrest russia and china much more overt about what they want. But we're still doing it right. You know but people need to realize that their government is doing doing them a favor. Australia's part of the fis right. Yeah yeah i mean it's it's again..

"Here to talk about the arrival of digital driver's licenses is recode's rebecca. Hi awhile rebecca. Hey so what is a digital driver's license in how will this new system work. You've probably been hearing a lot over the past few months about digital vaccine passports and serve saving personal information on phones and in phone apps so you should sort of think of that as the foundational technology but this will work a little bit differently primarily. Because it's the information that would be on your driver's license so imagine an app or part of an app that contains all the information that would be on your physical driver's license. That's actually now inside your phone so it would kind of look like physical. Id but there would be potentially some big differences so instead of just a stall photo it might be that digital's license includes a moving image kind of like those live photos on your phone. So it's you know kind of a digital version of what you already have. I the universe. The vastness the mystery the astonishing beauty of the stars. I love everything about it. And i devoted my life to studying it from adam's two galaxies from beginning to end but lately i've gotten stuck on that last bit the fact that the universe is dying. I know this may come as a shock. I mean it's the universe it's everything it's supposed to be eternal right but it isn't. We know the universe had a beginning and everything that begins and the start of the story is familiar one. In the beginning there was light. We know that because we can see it. Directly the cosmos today is filled with low energy background radiation leftover from a time when the whole universe was an all encompassing inferno in its first three hundred and eighty thousand years space or dark. it was thick. With a churning humming plasma it was hot and dense it was loud but it was also expanding over time the fire dissipated and space cooled clouds of gas pulled together by their own gravity form stars and galaxies and planets and us and one day astronomers using a microwave receiver detected a bit of static coming from every direction the sky the leftover radiation from that promote. He'll fire we can know map out the cosmos to the farthest reaches of the observable universe. We can see distant galaxies whose light has taken billions of years to reach us so by looking at them. We're looking deep into the past. We can watch how the expansion of the universe has slowed down since that hot early phase. Thirteen point eight billion years ago we can see collisions of entire galaxies. And watch the star formation the result from the sudden conflagration of all that cosmic hydrogen and we can see that these collisions are happening. Less and less. The expansion of the universe isn't slowing down anymore. A few billion years ago. It started speeding up. Distant galaxies are getting farther apart faster and faster star formation has slowed in fact we can calculate exactly how much and when we do we find something shocking of all the stars that have ever been born or that ever will be around ninety percent have already come into being from now until the end of time the universes were he'll just that last ten percent the end of the universe is coming. There are few ways that could happen but the most likely is called the heat death and in agonizing slow languishing of the cosmos stars. Burn out leaves smoldering ash. Galaxies become increasingly isolated in their own dimples of light particles decay even black holes evaporate into the void. Of course we still have some time. The heat is so far in the future. We hardly have words to describe it long. Past a billion years when the sun expands and boils off the oceans of the earth long past one hundred billion years we lose the ability to see distant galaxies and that faint trace of big bang light long after we are left alone in the darkness watching the milky way. Fade it's okay to be sad about it even if it is trillions of years in the future. No one wants to think about something. They love coming to an end as disconnected as it may be us here now. It is somehow more profound than personal death. We have strategies for accepting the ability of that. After all we tell ourselves something of us will live on. Maybe it will be our great works. Maybe it will be our children carrying on our genetic material or perhaps our basic outlook on life. Maybe it will be some idea worth spreading humanity might venture out into the stars and evolve and change but something of us will survive but the universe ends at some point. We have no legacy. There will come a time when in a very real sense our existence will not have mattered. The slate will be wiped clean completely. Why should we spend our lives seeking answers to the ultimate question of reality. If eventually there will be no one left to tell. Why build a sandcastle when you can see that the tide is coming in. I've asked a dozen other cosmologists. And they all had different answers to some. The death of the cosmos seems right. It's freeing to know that we are temporary. I very much like our glibness one told me to others. The question itself motivates the search for some alternative theory. There must be some way to carry on the slow fade to black. Just cannot be our story ends. One found comfort in the possibility of the multi vers. It's not all about us. He said personally. I feel lucky our cosmos existed for billions of years before us and it will carry on long after. We are gone

So here's my proof. I've had that happen where I couldn't find my registration. And I've also had to happen. Where the only insurance card I had cards I had on me. We have been expired, you know, But both times the officer was like That's fine. You know, this is enough. Do you make copies of everything in your wallet? Or is it just your driver's license? Like you have copies of all your credit cards and stuff like that? In case I have apple pay and I usually use apple pay for everything. Thank you pinkies up. Small businesses see rise in contactless payments amid pandemic
"Business owners have really adopted and glommed on to this new digital wave that we've all been thrusted into because of the pandemic small business owners like never before have been forced to seek help to digitize their business in various ways to try to accommodate the could their customers and try to survive. Frankly beyond just You know they're. They're the current environment so that they can pay their bills given that the lockdowns of had such a the capacity have had such a big effect of small business owners. There was a recent article published about small businesses that talks about how eighty two percent of small business owners are ready for digital payments and other digital methods of doing business as well. There was a study that was conducted by visa revealed. The eighty two percent of small business owners are shifting toward digital payments in response to the pandemic now. These small businesses are rolling out new forms of in-store contactless payments to meet the covid nineteen weary customers that are demanding their protection when they go to stores at the point of sale. And if you've gone to places like target recently or gone to places. Some big box retailers. Then you probably have seen some of the different methods that these stores have used to try to accommodate customers like putting barrier protections on the keypads of the payment like bacteria prevention or spread prevention bacteria. Microbe free plastic. Wrap things on the show what they're called but on the keys where you can punch in your code. I hope you still use sanitizer. Because those things say claim that they disinfect like all day which. I'm not too sure about not exactly sure how that works. But but anyways. Contactless payments in digitizing payments in digitizing business transactions is a big thing at the moment a small businesses or hopping onto you know and honestly there's some evidence that has shown that there are a lot of some big reasons. Why small business owners like yourself. Listening to this podcast. You consider this. The eighty two percent increase of small businesses using contactless payments was up according to the study from twenty percent in june. So now it's well. We're february i now january's over so you honestly at this sixty. Two percent increase in june is massive. It's absolutely massive and it. It absolutely shows no signs of slowing down in the new year since the pandemic small businesses have shifted in general digitizing their operation so if in the fitness industry which i know well of course because i have a stake in the fitness industry. Fitness companies have digitized their offerings. Of course everyone knows about some of the massive at home fitness companies. Like peleton have done. Really well and digitizing their brand and capitalizing on that digitize. They should of their brand and even with boutique studios fifty offered virtual studio classes to the members so that their members could have their workout still at home despite being off down and not able to come in so there have been a demonstration across the board in the us of many opportunities as small business. Owners have taken to digitize their small business and this includes at this point contactless payments. And if you're listening to this podcast. He don't contactless payment is think apple apple pay or amazon. Pay or pay pal. Basically you put your credit card into your smartphone and the wallet of your smartphone. When you get to the register you punch in your code or use your face. "So what are the top three trends. I believe you should look out for and twenty twenty one and how to really utilize each of them. So your business can reap the benefits in two thousand and twenty. Many industries are a surge in online shopping online purchases buying things whether it's products or services or tools online. And here's some data for you. Depending on the industry of various from one industry or the other but the minimum growth of online sales was twenty. Five percent in some industries saw up to five hundred percent growth if there was any apprehension of ever buying things online or being reluctant to put a credit card on a website. So people are having a more pleasant experience and they come back to buying your products and services is a more options for payment. One of the options Haven't adopted yet but we'll be adopting in two thousand. Twenty one is incorporating apple pay into their checkout process. over sixty percent of the internet's traffic is on mobile. That means people are going to be on your side. They're you buying things with their phone and a smooth transition to check out without pulling a credit card out of their wallet using apple pay is going to put you ahead of the game. It's gonna make it easier faster. Simpler for your customers already been predicted that apple pay is going to see a huge jump in twenty twenty one. Many studies have shown that by the end of twenty twenty one. The ten percent of all transactions around the world will be with apple pay. That's a huge slice of the pie. You can tap into that you can increase your checkouts by offering an easy way to check out if you're using a stripe for example checkout already have apple pay built in. If you're on a mac you have free editing software with movie. It doesn't have to be talking heavy. It could be interviews. You could be reaction videos. It can be collapse as long as it's entertaining. It's engaging it's informative. People will watch trend number three and this one's a big one and it's gonna affect a lot of businesses and you really should start looking into how you can adjust your business to your website. Accordingly and that is privacy and security. This has been something. That's been percolating in the news for some time. This is particularly important when it comes to the way you are going to be advertising to your customers typically if you want to run facebook ads for example you have to put what's called a tracking pixel on your website this facebook to know when somebody's on your website so they can serve them ads on facebook and also allows them to track conversions. The issue is that data gets an owned by facebook. And a lot of it is some information that a lot of gonna wanna share like we'll computer browser on their location. If they're signed into facebook they know a whole lot more. Even you know who they are their likes are wants. All the interactions. They've had on facebook and basically facebook contract this person as they're moving around the internet and this is becoming more of a problem is becoming more of an issue because feel realizing wow. I'm being tracked We started to see this a couple of years ago with the cookies. Message that you see for gdp are people say. Oh the cy has cookies. And it's a way for us to track and people just ignored it and they're just click. Okay things are going to get a little bit. Hotter apple has already announced that in their next ios update for was fourteen. They're going to have actual pop-ups actual System messages from the operating system telling the user telling the person with the iphone. Hey this site has a tracking pixel. Do you want to be tracked. And it's actually quite a statement. It's actually something you really can't ignore. You have to say yes my movements or no. I'm paraphrasing of course. But the point here is that the privacy issue of tracking people is becoming more and more a- battle and obviously apple is going because their brand is all about privacy and security and boy do they have a market share so a lot of your users a lot of people that use iphone. You know if they're use. Iphone are going to see this message on your site. This means you can't have a tracking pixel and you're gonna have to think of ways to market your business you can. Of course run ads without attracting pixel. But you can't track conversions. Which makes it really hard for you to be able advisor ads. Which then begs the questions. Should you run ads. So this is something you need to keep an eye on and you need to plan ahead already in our business. We're trying to move away from paid advertisement or paid acquisition where customers into long term long tail content marketing whether it's a blog whether it's videos whether it's youtube whether it's partnerships with as their affiliates. The point here is that we want to own the traffic. We ought to be able to rely on our own content to bring us a traffic and not use. Third party apps to advertise. This is a big shift. It's not easy. It's not just facebook. Google or anybody else that has any kind of pixel on your site or requires a pixel so that you can track conversions so if you use paid. Acquisition us paid ads on lincoln on facebook on google. You may want to think of other ways to bring in traffic at least wean yourself off of the a bit because it's not going to be as effective as it used to emmy even get more expensive so there you have a guys three trends to look out for twenty twenty one. Get on top of this and be ahead of the game.

Google is encouraging people to try it out and let google monitor your finances and purchases in exchange for personalize offers that it says you must opt in four so if google knows that you eat at burger king he could hit you up with specific burger king offers as opposed to generic restaurant deals in your neighborhood. But didn't know is that people are wary about giving google yet another license to track our every movement as it already does with maps youtube viewing searches and the like. It knows where you go what you watch who you spend time with what stores you drive to and more now. How do you feel about google tracking your purchases so in announcing the new program. Google said this paper civilization feature was opt in and offered a three month trial to give it a try quote at the end of three months. You can decide if you want to keep it on her off unquote. That's what google says and it sounds great right google's putting the decision in your reality check time. What happened during the troubled Big Sur launch, and why
"Apple released mac. Os eleven big sur. On thursday. Anyway it tried to expecting the best macrumors ran a piece. Highlighting of the operating systems planned improvements including the aesthetic redesign. The bigger stories today is the people who spent all day trying to download and install the blessed update seeing that ran peace in the middle of the day. Thursday saying that the downloads for big sur. Were super slow and that people were encountering installation delays of hours or even days in opposed at one forty nine. Pm pacific seeing that said this seemed to be very slow with the update. Failing completely for some customers after saying had about seventeen hours remaining the big sur installation failed five or six times for one scene net reporter and now won't restart now. I pointed out the time on that because just ahead of yesterday's mac. Os ken live. I checked apple system status page. It said that. The mac os software update issue had started around ten am pacific and was resolved by one fifteen pm. That was apparently a bit optimistic at about three thirty pacific cult posted a piece under the headline apple thinks is frustrating delays in macos big sur downloads sometime later. The headline was amended with the words. Update maybe not because yeah not checking apple system status page overnight. Last night apple had updated. Saying apple is having trouble with a number of services at this time and along with problems that are preventing people from installing mac. Another piece from macrumors told the long delays in launching apps or people being unable to open mac apps at all. The problem seems to have been tied to apple's developer. Id notary service as for. Apple's own services seems to have been seriously troublesome macrumors indicates that apple card and apple pay suffered a complete outage with users unable to complete apple pay transactions traffic info and navigation and rounding for maps were also unavailable that outage ran from noon pacific to one forty macrumors updated story at two thirty pacific saying that apple had resolved all of the outstanding issues. Is it possible that apple just trying to do too much in one day. In addition to the big sur release apple also released updates for some of its productivity and creativity applications one piece from apple insider says apple on thursday released updates for i work and garage band while another piece from the same site says apple updated final cut pro and logic pro. The first piece says the i work and garage band. Updates bring their design in line with the big sur aesthetic new icons and a refined design for pages numbers and keynote according to the report that plus the usual stabs and purves as for garage band. There seems to be quite a bit. That's new including customization of region colors and tracks eighteen hundred new apple loops over one hundred ninety new instrument patches and fifty vintage and modern drum kits all of that plus a bit of the big sur design language for everyone then there are tweaks for the computers coming soon. According to apple insider garage band has been tweaked to improve performance and efficiency on mac computers powered by apple silica for apple silicon that final cut pro and logic pro were updated as well and by the way. There but on Instagram, not so much I'm not looking to do business on instagram. So I think Lincoln or Microsoft rather is super smart for doing this and I'm glad that they finally brought it up. He just left to start his own substance. So everyone starting substance right now, which is basically just you're starting to email newsletter. So when I spoke to Anthony yesterday, I think he's got about five thousand subscribers paying subscriber. So paying ten dollars fifty grand a month from his newsletter, which is. Not, bad at six hundred, grand a year and so whether it's paid newsletters or even paid podcast subscriptions, i. think that's going to become more and more of a trend because people are legit leaving their full time jobs as writers unders going off on their own. You Got Ben Thompson, that's doing that. So what are your thoughts on that? Do you know anyone that's doing it really well, I don't know anyone that's doing well, but I know it makes money look at a Gora. Yeah Oh, how much they do in review of Gore's billion plus dollar company in revenue go some arriving ago. What else you got connection that I have that we're seeing come up in the upcoming years is look when you think about marketing all get emails, a lot of US ignore. But there's a new trend that we're seeing in emails. Right even we ignore emails it's still generate so much money we all send out so many emails, there's company called Sam email that lets you make purchases within your emails. So imagine me sending you e mail regarding I a t shirt you can pick the size and actually checkout and by within the EAMONN never have to go to the website or right now they specialize in airlines you can actually adjust your seat and adjust your ticket and all that kind of stuff within the Eamon. You see like the seat map and you can click and upgrading all that kind of stuff. It's Kinda cool. That's awesome. Yeah. I mean when we think about this at the end of the day, I was buying stuff using my phone when I as I was traveling is just when there's apple pay I immediately select that because the friction there's there's a lot less friction, the experiences a lot better. So whatever way you can make it easier for people to get things done. That's GonNa do well, and then your total. addressable market for that is huge right because you're just trying to solve problems for of Swath of people, you're not even just solving for for niche problems anymore and I think the final thing all end with right now is well to me I, just kind of been observing an investing world right now if you go read bessemer memos just typing bvp memos, what's fascinating to me is how firm decided invest in Shop a fine the very beginning, and you see a lot of interesting trends around that at how off they were in terms of how big they thought the market size was for. This is not exactly a I guess a trend here's that people are writing a lot more than what I'm gaining a lot from these memos. So I guess my only thing I'm trying to point you in the direction of is. Internet Archive Book Scanning with Davide Semenzin
"Welcome to the show. Thank you. You're on the Internet Archive. What does the Internet archive do. That's a great question. Deterrent archive is the world's largest digital library, and whereas most people may know of us because of the way back machine, which is this really rather needs tool that allows you to go back in time and kind of see what web pages used to look like. We really are fully-fledged online is the library and that we have different types of media types. We hold texts and television and audio images, movies, all sorts of things and yeah, the introduce archive you can think of as this huge repository of Internet. When did you start working there? I started here in two thousand sixteen. So. We've been yeah for years. And what do you work on their today? Well, I work on the books. That's mostly what I would I have always been on. I'm spending the bits inside of this. So usually when we think about our media types, we think of in terms of bits and bits out how we procured them, and how we distribute them. My specialty is working on the book bits in saw in order to build up our collection of almost four million books we have Candan, and my job is to sort of keep running the whole pipeline that allows us to do that. So over the last four years, we've my team, I built it. And now we achieved over our objective of being able to digitize million books per year which we're doing, and it's pretty interesting challenge so far. So you work on book digitisation and I WanNa talk about that. But first, let's talk more about the Internet archive at a high level. He told me about what is being stored across the Internet archive and who pays for it, and how do people use it just share a little bit more about the Internet Archive. Yeah. That's a great question. So I'm going to start from a WHO pays for it because I think that's the result of depth and that question Internet Archive. If you think about it as a repository, it's just essentially a bunch of hard drives spinning connected to the Internet. Somebody's GONNA. Pay For both danger and connection and hard drives and the electricity and all of that largely you can think. Of of our revenues in treated front weight. So we're a nonprofit and we don't really run for profit businesses. We don't benefit in any way of the data that comes on on our servers. We do benefit from your donations and so by and large, we are a community funded effort, and so if you type slash donate, we actually just added integration with apple pay so people will not help us. That'd be great. So we receive a fair amount of money that we we need to run from patrons, Cintas like people who supported us. On the side, we do have some some small some businesses. So we have our archive it. Our arm where essentially contract alto were machine capabilities and we we are maintaining a very large amount of curated website collections. In fact, we I, think we have about seven hundred can ization that are that are partnering with us to create these collections and if you tens of billions euros that have been collected for for our partners, and so they pay us to do the service and we do it for them and same is true for books. digitisation. So as we have built up to large infrastructure that is required to do this kind of tasks, we have to an extent, the ability to contract out to third parties, and so we do get some some revenue streams that way not anything particularly substantial in terms of like our ability to to sustain ourselves. But you know every little bit helps and then obviously throughout the twenty twenty, five years of our existence, our founder Brewster Kahle has. Chipped in here in Deir a significant amount, I guess over the years to to keep us running. So we have donations we have a little bit of our non for profit business, and then we have brewster who is there so This is in terms of who pays for it, but the question would be I guess who benefits from it. Right and that's a very, very large segment of the Internet. We're not the biggest website on the Internet. They think we are. We're ranking about two hundred and something the Alexa rank. But since we've been around for a long time, the users that that lovers the Lavas like I, every day I am in contact with people who tell me their story about how they use the Internet archive for their specific need always always amazed by the depth and breadth of. The of the use cases user spring to us. So it it spans from teachers to researchers, journalists to lawyers Theresa very, very large diversity also in terms of the country's from the backgrounds from from when users from. So it's kind of hard to to to paint them with the same brush but in general I want to say they are people who have some degree of laugh for knowledge and you may know our our motto, our slogan our mission is Universal Access to all knowledge, and so I guess people who have an interest in that eventually land on on our website. Okay. Well, let's talk about book digitisation as a particular project that is under the auspices of the Internet Archive. What is book digitisation? So, books digitisation is the effort of transforming physical books into digital artifacts. So that's the definition can take it forms. You know if you are if you have a scanner in your home and your scanning document in a way, that's obviously that's digitisation if you take pictures of the book. That's a book book digitization. So the definition that needs to be applied to the use case at hand, there have been other efforts at large scale of books. This decision famously Google had one but dare. Different From Ours, for instance, where they did distractive digitisation so they would pull the spines from books and and turn dot process into a sort of sensitive. Kind of problem we do non destructive book dissertation and I think non-destructive bit. It's just a little bit as important in the Beth nation as the fact that we're these books digitizing them so that we can keep them so that we don't destroy them. So the process by which we turn books into bits and then returned books to wherever they came from or wherever they need to go. So Why would I want to digitize a book and how many books get digitized each day just tell me more about the volume that's going through this. I'm very happy to answer this. So the reason why you would want to digitize book there's multiple. So think about for instance, the first thing that comes to mind is obviously preservation if famous birtherism is that accessibility drives preservation so if you don't have something. It's almost like it doesn't exist especially in this age of information, we do have immediate access to all of all of these resources and so if we if you actually think about this, if you have to go to the library to to procure a certain book chances are you won't, and if the if the record of that book actually doesn't exist, you may never get to it and were. This is a problem is for all of this huge amount of books that were printed in the twentieth century for which there is really no digital equivalent books nowadays that are published like currently obviously, they have a book artifacts. That stuff is not to get lost. and. That stuff is searchable and it's reachable but we have. Tens of millions of books that are unaccounted for and as time progresses getting lost, and if we if somebody doesn't save them, they will be lost forever and that's that would be a pity and huge loss of human effort and so but first of all, I think important to scope the problem I think the D estimates that there is about one hundred, million books out there. Give or take unique unique books and. Scanning them we're, probably not gonNA scan all all one hundred of them first of all because. You would be able to source and that's my fire the hardest thing. So we tried to scope down the problem and trying to figure out. Okay. How can we do this in a way that is useful for people so first of all, I think we had to come up with a list of books that we wanted to get into we knew. Books that are important and we need to can these first so that? We'll. We'll get. We'll get into to people and this will be evidently immediately useful and a good place for us to start was freaky Pedia, which is collected. A long list of SPN's the where commonly cited in Wikipedia compiled the list came out to a few hundred, thousand books, and so whenever we we come upon one of those sourcing process, we make sure that we get. We can talk about the senator sourcing, Proxima, little bit later but in general, we do have a little bit of a concept of priority or at least we did this was the first million million and a half. And then the problem was that we started running out of books you would be surprised how hard it is to source books by by the half a million you know and if you if you do it by your smaller scale, it doesn't really make sense to to us in terms of maintaining our our economic scale. So the whole system works only if you scan at huge volume and time and but huge volume, we're talking about a million bucks a year, which is about three thousand books day some things some days we'll do thirty, five somedays. We'll do twenty five on a seven days week averages houses about. Between Twenty to twenty, twenty, five, thousand books. Every book is about three hundred pages so that. COMES OUT PRETTY NEAT about million million pages per day five to seven million pages per week and you know that's not a huge amount of data in total. I wouldn't be surprised I. think like last time I checked it was about between ten and fifteen terabytes of data week. So we're not talking about huge amounts but it's not a small amount eater and we can talk about the challenges of Piping data over the Internet in a reliable way later but it's a significant volume and this operation is running you know twenty, four seven. And so. In terms of why even do this? So I called for the first part, which is obviously people want to get to the books. There is a second benefit in having digitize books, and that it's a wholly new format, it allows you to interact with the body of knowledge in a way that you never have before if you have. A physical book artifact, it has some very desirable properties, for instance, very low random access time and doesn't depend on the battery. It's very, very hard to censor, and these are not properties of digital artifact but this is the active factor searchable, and in fact that we have like it's pretty amazing next search engine where you can instantly search all forty million text items that we have. So that's a million books plus all of the patents papers I'll all sorts of stuff and you can search that instantly that was just not possible with the previous format. So I don't think this is dwell ISM in any way I think books. Digital format and books their physical format will continue to coexist. They just help each other out, and in fact, if we are able to digitize them in the first place is because of the properties of. Physical artifacts that they don't just disappear. If we find one, we can scan it. Well. Those are great summary of what you do and I can tell how excited you are about it. Let's talk a little bit more about the high level, and then we'll get into the engineering. So can you describe the steps of digitisation in more detail if I have a book how am I digitized it? Yeah. So, the books that position pipeline is predecing people and it's like in a way if you're an engineer I think is kind of what to expect so I D-. A physical sorting. Step where your book is ingested into the system. It's given ID and it's it's placed in a container. So we know that the the exists. So to speak the second step is it gets to a scanner. The scanner picks it up within the in the machine loads up the data necessary whereby The books method data we can. We're going to have to talk about that. I, guess it's pretty interesting facet of it all and then proceeded to actually scan it, which means they turned the pages page by page and they take pictures of the pages, and once this process done they click upload and the book vanishes into the ether and so at this point, we have a fork the digital artifact goes into our servers divisible artifacts either goes back to the person who gave it to us in the first place or it goes into our warehouse. and. This largely depends on what kind of book it is. So obviously, the recent larger conversation to be had about copyright and like what books is it is it okay to scan and under what guys it is but suppose we are just you know scanning Yearbook Jeff and you you just wrote the book and you want to have it digitized to risk no claim on it just wanted back at the end. So after we're done scanning it, we're handing it back to you with slip inside which will tell you the Internet archive identifier and the. Or is just the name of the item on the Internet Archive. Everything is an item and you're just going go to type slash details, slash your identifier and a few hours. Later, you will find her book. Wile you wait the second part of the pipeline is GONNA kick off. So That's the digital server side stuff and it's divided essentially three phases. We have a first phase which it's a preprocessing stage where we get a look this images that came raw from the camera we'll look at them crop firm we discovered them and we just make sure that everything is is ready to go. There was a second phase of Manual Review Sa- currently all books that we upload have to be checked by a human for correctness, and so this is a step were. Reviewer just goes through the images in shorts that everything is fine and then when this is done, they kick off the third stage of the pipeline, which is A. Is the real processing stage where we take all of these files and compiled them in such a way that they are suitable for consumption by our web front end what we call book reader and from their wheel derive. We call them to rotate formats such as PDF, Abi e POB and either a text file. So CR it all happens at at this stage. This is kind of like the bird I view of the of the books that decision pipeline.

Should You Start Accepting Apple Pay?
"One of the reasons why I'm doing this lesson today on apple pay is it's something that I actually looked into a few months ago. I did a massive amount of research on. This is worth actually incorporating in our website in our payment process. Depending on your website could be something as simple as just flipping a switch or a custom solutions is can take some time and money in our case it's the latter. So I wanted to make sure before we invested the time in adding apple pay that is actually the right time to do it something that we should do now and will benefit us in the future. So I did all the research for you. Let me tell you what I think first of all, let's talk a little bit about apple pay is applebee's basically apple's mobile Wallet most of US know about apple pay because it's either incorporated in a iphone that you have or somebody you know that has an iphone were they pay Vajpai wave where they just you know bring their phone to credit card machine and a charges their account. This is just one aspect of apple pay, which is the NFC aspect the near field communication aspect where basically it's like the tap and go technology but apple pay is a lot more than you can actually pay via apple pay if you're an apple device for online transactions because has already secured safely your credit card information and really with a double click on your phone or A click of a gun on a laptop with a touch ID, you can pay for things the fast way you could pay for anything and many big websites have caught on said, wow, this is actually a very, very fast way for people with apple devices to pay for goods I'm talking about online websites not even in physical stores. If you're in a physical store is a no brainer. You need to have NFC technology where you have tap and go where you're utilizing the whether it's apple pay or competitor like Samsung's. Even some credit cards now that have that built in but when it comes to your online store, apple pay again is a fast way for people to just use the stored information that's on their device on their computer on their phone or on their ipad to pay for things with a single click. Now, what's intriguing about this technology is basically allowing your customers to have as fast as a checkup process as they do with something like Amazon where They save all your credit card information you add to car or you just pay immediately and it's done. Amazon's really locked that down and it's the one of the reasons why they have such rapid growth and Jeff visas as one of the richest men that ever lived in the history of humankind and that technology that fast checkout is one of the reasons why Amazon so successful. So imagine you can borrow the experience in put it into your own. Website and that's really why I wanted to look into this because it really allows people to have a seamless checkout experience. The step where you at your payment details online for any transaction is the step where you're going to experience the most friction. This is where there's the most likelihood for people to abandon car. You can remove that friction altogether with something like apple pay you are one step ahead you're really gaining a competitive advantage from your competitor. And allowing your customers have a better experience. Now, of course, this is only relevant for those who have vices, and of course, apple pay should be an additional form of payment. So they can pay by credit card that you pay by apple pay. You might even want offer pay pal. The point here is is that it should be in addition to traditional credit card payment and you might be thing wall You know how many people actually using this Will there's two stats that really compelled me to say this is an important thing to implement in your website number one, five percent of all transactions online are paid with apple pay already in two, thousand and nineteen it's five percent you can increase your sales. Simply by offering this okay. Second in just five years from now in twenty twenty-five, the projection is ten percent they're going to go from five to ten percent in that short amount of time one and ten payments online are going to be with apple pay. You might be thinking what else ago well, another thing that makes people believe the apple's going to take over the carless payment is the sheer growth of the company itself apples at a tremendous pace. It's already the most valuable company in the world just hit a two trillion. Dollar valuation the Most Valuable Company in American history apple has already started to sell products at all different price points and they're not just an expensive product. Now, where you know you buy an iphone for twelve hundred dollars, they have iphones for five hundred dollars. Now they have the I watched, they have ipads for four hundred dollars.
