"Another one of my assumptions. All along has been that if the app store gets cracked open. Then that sort of sets a precedent that could put a lot of economic and marketplace assumptions in play could this story be that in sort of a butterfly flapping its wings sort of case or is this just competition in the cloud. Space sources are telling cnbc that google cloud platform plans to slash. Its revenue share from twenty percent to three percent for third party software on its cloud marketplace matching microsoft's recent cut quote. It's the cloud groups latest effort to become more competitive since thomas korean joined as ceo in two thousand nineteen after a career at oracle google which trails amazon web services and microsoft azure and cloud infrastructure is trying to attract independent software makers to sell their products. On google's cloud quote our goal is to provide partners with the best platform and most competitive incentives in the industry. A google spokesperson told. Cnbc in an email. We can confirm that a change to our marketplace fee structure is in the works and we'll have more to share on the soon and quote big tech companies in recent months have been decreasing the amount of money they retain on their platforms whether it's for consumer apps or business products. Some of the pressure is related to competition. While regulatory and legal concerns are also mounting in july. Google decrease the percentage. It keeps from purchases through. Its play store where consumers by apps to fifteen percent from thirty percent for the first one million dollars in revenue a developer earns each year. Also this year apple provided the same reduction for app developers with under one million dollars in annual sales as part of a lawsuit filed by epic games. A judge in california ruled this month. That apple will no longer be allowed to prohibit developers from providing links or other communications that direct users away apple in app purchasing.

Apple Must Allow Other Forms of in-App Purchase, Rules Judge

"Apples expected to real a new iphone today but the biggest update may be in its app store. That's because of a ruling in the epoch versus apple lawsuit which came down in apple's favor with one big exception. A judge ruled that apple does not have to reduce the fees. It charges developers in its app stores. It's currently from fifteen to thirty percent. Fortnight epochs gay may. We're maine's banned from the app store. However because they broke their contract over the judge allowed the divers can use a non apps or payments to get around the apple store fees. That's a big change. It's a big win. Epoch still filed an appeal because it didn't declare apple monopolised etc etc. It's a really interesting ruling and to me. Apple did when they were going in this direction anyway with their previous settlement the week before and more gherman who writes really well about apple was like look. It's not that much money for them. They were going in this direction. Anyway and most people will probably still pick. Apple is the payment system. So what do you think about mark. Gherman swanee guess is your dog walker now anyways Look this was. This is an interesting case of the media deciding. Wouldn't it be more interesting to say. Epic fail for apple right and the reality was it was probably more of a win for our it distills down to it. A lot of anti-trust lawyers on both sides of the issue will say that it being a monopoly as an illegal. It's abusing monopoly power. And what they've said is okay you've minder standing of the ruling is the judge has basically said you've invested a lot. You've done a good job. People get utility from this consumers. Clearly love it. They don't feel angry that they you know they. They have to wait for someone to come installed their cable between the hours of one and five and three months because you have a regulated monopoly. But what they've said is its monopoly abuse. You can continue to charge thirty percent. You can continue to have somewhere between fifty five and eighty five percent market share depending on how you calculated. But we can't do is when someone's downloaded the app. Then decide that all tail activity within the app. You get a commission on their saw that as monopoly

Apple vs Epic Games Lawsuit: Apple Must Allow Other Forms of in-App Purchase

"Us judge yvonne gonzalez rogers came back with her ruling in the epic games versus apple fight on friday her decision to seen by most as a win for apple. Not an outright win. More of a. It could have been a lot worse win. Basically apple has to lead developers put buttons and links and their apps to take customers to third party. Payment options effectively says a piece from tech crunch. The judge has ruled that apple cannot prohibit developers from adding links for alternative payments beyond apple's app store based monetization remember the deal apple made with lawmakers in japan for outside payments for reader apps. Yeah this is basically that but for every app that wants to take advantage. According to the ruling apple can no longer stop developers from one including in their apps and their meta data buttons external links or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms in addition to end up purchasing and to communicating with customers through points of contact obtained voluntarily from customers through account registration within the app. Not what apple would have wanted but again could have been worse. The app store might have been deemed a monopoly. It was not according judge gonzales rogers while the court finds that apple enjoys considerable market share of over fifty five percent and extraordinarily high profit margins. These factors alone. Do not show antitrust conduct. Success is not illegal with that bart apple was

"U s district court judge yvonne gonzalez rogers issued her decision in epic versus apple. The court found in favor of apple on all counts except with respect to a violation of california's unfair competition law. The court noted epoch breached his contract with apple by implementing an alternative payment system and is ordered to pay apple thirty percent of everything collected through the alternative system estimated to be around three point. Five million dollars. The judge also issued an order to apple that they are permanently restrained and enjoying from prohibiting developers from including in their apps and their metadata buttons external links or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms. Apple Mostly Wins in Fortnite Trial, but Must Ease Payment Rules

"News. The epic versus apple trial on at eight covered. A bunch of it. We covered it very in depth. It had twists and turns. It had a lengthy digression into what the definition of a game is. We knew this was coming very soon. It's funny because there's an apple event on tuesday but friday morning the ruling doesn't hit first injunction against apple hits i the injunction says apple can't prohibit developers from linking to other kinds of payment systems and other stuff. We'll get into it but that's that's big news on its face. Then there's a ruling i would say. The ruling is for epic lost a bunch at explain the shape of the ruling to people. So at the very highest level the ruling is ruling both on epochs claims against apple which are antitrust related and then counterclaims. That apple made against epic which were mostly breach-of-contract related. So the really big thing that epochs been arguing is that iowa's ecosystem itself is an unlawful monopoly. Just sort of by existing in the state at does and that claim failed. There was the idea that ios locking down app distribution not allowing third party. Stores are not allowing side loading was a thing that apple was doing to lockout competition and was violating anti trust laws that also failed then related. There's an argument that apple had been doing been of self preferencing. It's own apps and creating a bunch of sort of pretexts to kick apps out of the app store also not illegal or not convincingly breaking antitrust law. There is apple. The idea that apple is illegally tying in-app purchases. Which were the thing like the box. The sort of central issue in the case To the rest of the app store and that they should have let people used in cell in-app purchases a sort of completely separate product That also failed

Apple App Store Changes Fail to Stem Push for Overhaul Bill

"Peace offerings and settlements between apple and developers won't stop congressional moves against app stores couple of weeks ago apple announced a proposed settlement with smaller developers. Perhaps the biggest concession offered by apple was the one that would let developers use communications such as email to share information about payment methods outside of their ios app. A few days later apple settled with the japanese government that settlement included a pledge to let reader apps such as net flex and spotify. And who knows. Maybe some that actually involve reading under terms of the settlement apple will let reader apps include an in napa linked to their website for users to either setup or managing account and sign up using a non app store. Payment method will be possible according to a piece from macrumors. Maybe they think it's not enough. Maybe they just wanna look tough. Whatever the reason the piece from apple and cider has at least one. Us senator saying legislation up ending up stores. Run by apple and google will go forward last month. A bipartisan group of senators introduced the open up. Markets act speaking the bloomberg one of the. Bill's sponsors senator. Amy klobuchar democrat of minnesota. Said though apple is taken some small steps to respond to criticism of its anticompetitive conduct. They did not go. Nearly far enough there is growing momentum to pass the open up. Markets act to finally address apple and google twin monopolies. And i will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get it done. You didn't ask but i'll tell you anyway. Apple Settles Class Action Lawsuit With App Developers

"Apple settled a hundred million dollar lawsuit time. Can you walk through. What was this lawsuit. And what was the settlement so apple there is a class action lawsuit from a variety of developers Who said that. The app store was monopoly. That apple was you know being unfair. It was an improper monopolization to the market. It was filed in twenty nineteen and apple is settled that wall street this week with one hundred million dollars settlement that includes clarifying. Some of its policy is about some rules on irs. They're making one hundred. Million dollar fund develop burs thirty million dollars of which is going to be used to pay lawyers. And if you're a smaller iowa's developer you'll you'll probably get some money out of this. They're also going to do things like not change. How app store works for minimum of. I think three years and they're going to keep the small business. The app store small business program which says that if you earn less than one million dollars a year you can apply to get fifteen percent cut your sales instead of thirty percent so that will stay unchanged for the next three years also in its current form which is if you make less than a million and you could do that the day that you go over and you know you make a million dollars once again. Subject to the thirty million a thirty percent cut so that's not changing in either direction And there will be more price points for apps so instead of selling app for like a dollar you'll be able to in theory sal for like a dollar fifty or a dollar eighty. There's like more than five hundred points coming right now. There's one hundred. So

Hello dan i'm like i don't want you guys know that i make my pillow's so i can hold them up myself. Dad is smart programme. Yeah well speaking of being a pro which is the say going with. You are a pro when it comes to apple. And i wanted to talk to you actually a couple of things. This is interesting. Because i brought you in to talk about Apple and its plans for Allowing reader apps to link to their sites. But before we get to that. I think it's good to kind of establish a little bit of Of the environment right now and what's going on apple when it comes to the app store that could actually talk before that about apple's decisions when it comes to how it settled the class action lawsuit with developers sure. Yeah so apple got a it was involved in this class action lawsuit which is brought by a certain group of and essentially these developers were alleging that some of the ways to apple does businesses. Not exactly fair. So apple decided to settle this case. Obviously the developers agreed to that potentially in large part because chances of beating apple in a straight courtroom case was not going to work very well and so as a result they gained what i think. A lot of media companies framed sort of concessions from apple but which actually turned out to be things that were more like. Well we'll we're doing things this way and we promise we'll keep doing them this way for at least a little while. So there were very few actual changes to the policies. As a result of that. I think the biggest that sort of came out of it was there was one about letting developers use more price points Essentially being able to set their prices at more levels than apple had given the option before which is good for developers but also not bad for apple because apple still makes the cut no matter what that price point is

"A new bill that set to become law in south korea could put a dent in google. And apple's dominance over in-app purchases right now app developers who sell through the tech giant's app stores are required to use the company's in house payment systems which gives google and apple a cut of up to thirty percent of the sale but a bill passed yesterday by south korea's parliament would change that by allowing at makers to use other options for getting payments. It would be the first. Such law in the world. Though similar measures have been proposed in the us and europe apple and google have defended requiring the use of their payment systems. Apple says using other systems could increase the risk of fraud and privacy violations. Google says the commission's help keep its android operating system free.

Apple, US Developers Agree to App Store Updates

"News today. A kinder gentler app store late in the day on thursday apple issued a press release announcing changes that it hopes will subtle a class action lawsuit brought by smaller developers in the us according to the release the agreement clarifies developers can share purchase options with users outside of their ios app expense. The price points developers can offer for subscriptions in that purchases and paid apps and establishes a new fund to assist qualifying. Us developers going a bit more in depth points numerate it include keeping the current revenue split a fifteen percent to apple eighty five percent to developers making under a million dollars a year. The split stays thirty seventy for developers making over that amount with those terms set for the next three years. Search in the app store will continue to be based on objective characteristics like downloads star ratings text relevance and user behaviour signals that's at the request of developers according to apple and that is also for the next three years to give developers even more flexibility to reach their customers as apple. The company agrees developers can use communications such as email to share information about payment methods outside of their ios app. Customers have to agree to be reached by developers and must be able to opt out of such communication afterwards if customers go for a payment process outside of the app store apple takes no commission apple will also expand the number of price points available to developers force subscriptions in that purchases and paid apps while developers will continue to set their own prices. Apple will maintain the option for developers to appeal the rejection of an app based on perceived unfair treatment though it will add content. The app review website to help developers understand how the appeals process works.

Even Google Thinks Sideloading Apps on Android Is Horrible

"I stop actually. This came as kind of the second batch of revelations the first batch of revelation was that apparently google also doesn't think side loading is the best experience on android so that was the first major revelation to come out of this court case but then also like the most obvious thing that can come out of anything is like of course side loading the best experience. I'm sorry that was just super obvious. A yeah but i think the reason that came out is because they were using that as an argument for why epic should not put you know. It's it's fortnight game in its own little styling apps for situation it should go through the play store because that would be the best situation Well google has other ways to that It likes to compete. An Apps Plan to Profit off Your Fear

"So can you first tell us a little bit about what citizen is and does citizen launched in two thousand sixteen. It was called vigilante at the time. Sort of sold itself as the opening up of the nine one one system. You could see what was going on around. You sold it as like you could then serve act on it. In a way that made people think they were encouraging people to be vigilantes. The name didn't help so it was banned from the app store and they relaunched as citizen in two thousand seventeen with a selling point as more of like this is just make people aware of the world around them. Basically the scrape nine one one off of like scanner information and then they visualize it so you open it and you can see where all the nine one one calls very easily on a map. Who know what they are and then people can go to the scenes or if they're already at like video photos whatever and comments and stuff like that. So it's a sort of community thing that just tells you all the batter weird emergency things that are happening in your neighborhood so we had vigilante and then that became citizen and now citizen is launching citizen protect. Tell us a little bit more about the new service. So susan protect is one of the ways that this company hopes to sorta monetize the the sa- free service that brings. It's a twenty dollars a month. Subscription service introducing citizen protect. Your protect agent is just one tap away if you enrolling it you have access to like protect agent and you can call upon that person if you need or think you might need emergency assistance. And then they can help you out. You can do that either through you know tapping the agent button on your app or you can swipe to enable something called protect mode so this actually sounds a bit like poison control. It's an someone you can call if you think you need help but don't know what you need but for twenty dollars a month i have to imagine. It's more sophisticated than that. Yeah i mean we have an app here so we're going to take advantage of all the things you can do from your phone. Technology gives you a protect mode. Which is the thing you know you swipe to enable you can either do something called distress detection which is where a i saw a person but a computer is like listening through your phones microphone for sounds of like screaming or something and then it will either ask you if you want to be connected to an agent or it will automatically connect you if you don't respond quickly enough

Are Smart Phone Apps Ripping You Off?

"Both apple and google are being sued all over the place for how they run their stores. The app store the play store and what these two have been doing. Is they use their shared monopoly control over the ecosystem of phones to put up tollgates to rip you off a lot of cases. You're not even aware how much you're being ripped off their when you download an app that comes with this subscription or purchases. It's marked up an additional thirty percent for the toll that they have to pay the app. Developer has to pay to google or apple and this is so different than the era of the pc. The mac book the windows. Computer the chromebook that when you go to a website you use any function on your computer apple and google and the people who manufacturer chromebooks and all that they don't extract a toll and so the cost of anything you pay goes to who built that service now. This is a huge deal with apple self-dealing trying to rip people off on pandora and especially spotify to try to get iphone users to use apple music. It is true self-dealing where apple is able to grab all this money and google just as guilty in this area and microsoft who quietly has become one of the most valuable companies in the world again. I mean nobody really thinks about microsof- but microsoft has come up with a way to get around this on phones. That probably has google and apple. People furious where they've got a platform they've developed. Where on a phone. You'll be able to access things web-based that operate like apps and avoid the rip off thirty percent. Add on that you have to pay right now in the app store or in the play store and so no that with apps you're using that you're paying usually much more than you have to

Teams are convictions. On all these stocks once it hits an etf product it also becomes capitalization weighted. And so two georgia's point. You get some big names. That are driving a lot of the change. I would say the other thing investor can do is remember there are mid cap. Ats that you can participate in their international. Etf's there's a whole world of etf's that can give you a little bit of diversification. I know this sounds ironic to say this outside of the s. and p. five hundred index. Which is supposed to be your diversification vehicle. Now that's true but it's it's it is one of those parts of the investing world that that doesn't get as much attention as individual companies and that makes sense to me just from a from a business media standpoint but it's a great point that a good way to diverse if you're looking for like okay i'm looking for not individuals particularly on the international level. If you're just like okay. How can i take a basket approach to a region of the world. But i don't wanna pick individual stocks myself and you can do that by the way i mean you. You can go the jason moser route of. I'm going to find four stocks in this category. And that's going to be my basket but you know you can also go the effort yeah. I think it's a really fun way. In fact to learn about other parts of the world that are emerging in in terms of investment viability and also some mature markets that we often overlook in our own backyard. You could look for a a large cap stock which has an industrial focus so that might leave out a lot of tech stocks so e tips give you that ability to to play around to diversify to learn and i agree with you chris. There overlooked In in some ways they also are a great fund of ideas. One of the best things you can do as an investor who is both diversifying through. Atf's and picking your own stocks is to pour through the list of the holdings of every etf you buy and look at those top ten or top fifty holdings that can generate some very interesting ideas a many of times many. It's been the time that i've looked down. One of these holdings list and third or fourth fifth biggest holding in x. etf is stock. I've never thought about owning for myself when i do. Some research and a light bulb goes off. Why why don't i own the security on the side here. So i think there can be healthy symbiosis between the stocks. Were picking that we just really love and wanna have in our portfolio and those etf's which gives us a little bit more comfort bill to sleep at night and.

"After several major tech companies effectively blocked the social media app parlor earlier this year. It's now back in apple's app store and users are once again able to use their iphones to log in for more on this. I'm joined by our tech reporter. Sara adelman hey sarah thanks for joining me. My pleasure okay. So it's been a while since we've talked about parlor. Can you remind us what this platform is and why all these various tech platforms blocked parlor is a social media service. That bills itself as an unbiased free speech alternative to the more mainstream platforms like facebook and twitter. It has a lot looser. Policies content moderation and. It's attracted many high-profile conservative media personalities. Such as fox. News host sean hannity supporters of former president trump and even people who've been banned by other large social networks like the right <unk>. Far-right talk show host. A conspiracy theorist alex jones and the reason parlor was taken down by the app store and google play and why amazon stopped providing cloud hosting services to it is because of the kind of content that appeared on parlour especially in the days leading up to the capitol hill riots. There were a lot of calls for violence and rhetoric. That just didn't fly with those companies rules. Okay so where has parlor ben since. Then what's been going on behind the scenes for parlor basically went dark. You couldn't get to it on the internet in terms like a website and you couldn't get to its apps in february resumed operations on websites and also on android devices. The company has a new web hosting service. So it's not using amazon anymore. It said that it's not planning to make an effort to get onto google. Play being that you can access the app through android versions of the platform. Anyway google does power the android operating system but that is distinct from google play. And so that's when it resumed in at that point they said they had about twenty million users up from fifty million prior to when it went dark and then since then parlor has been trying to regain access to apple's app store and that has happened now.

"Incident halted our oil supply in the southern united states until hackers were paid a bounty of five million dollars. I found this release from apple to be very revealing. And thought i would share with you on today's podcast. Threats have been present since the first day. The app store launched on iphone and they've increased in both scale and sophistication in the years. Since apple has likewise scaled its effort to meet those threats taking relentless steps to combat these risks to users and developers alike. We often see the updates and don't really know what happens until now apple says it takes significant resources behind the scenes to ensure these bad actors can't exploit users more sensitive information from location to payment details waltz impossible to catch every act of fraud or ill interest before it happens. Apples industry leading anti fraud. Efforts and security experts agree that the app store is the safest way to find and download apps. This is always something. I with my android friends as apple being more secure to download apps in twenty twenty alone. Apple's combination of sophisticated technology and human expertise protected customers for more than one point. Five billion dollars in potential fraudulent transactions preventing the attempted theft of their money information and time and kept nearly a million risky and vulnerable new apps out of their hands. Let's break this down a little bit further starting with the apple app review team. The app review team is an essential line of defense carefully. Viewing every app in every update to ensure they adhere to the app stores guidance on privacy security and spam the guidelines have changed over the time to respond to new threats and challenges with a goal of protecting users on the app store. Apple's goal is to get new apps onto the store in twenty twenty. The team assisted more than one hundred. Eighty thousand new developers in lodging apps. Sometimes this takes a few tries. An app might be unfinished or not functioning properly when it submitted for approval or might not yet have a sufficient mechanism for moderating user content in twenty twenty nearly one million problematic new apps and an additional nearly one million app updates were rejected or removed for a range of reasons like those are smaller but significant set of these rejections was for agree gis violations. That could harm users or deeply diminished their experience in two thousand nine hundred twenty alone. The app review team rejected more than forty eight thousand apps for containing hidden or undocumented features and more than one hundred and fifty thousand apps were rejected because they were found to be spam copycats or misleading. To us in ways as manipulating them into making up purchase some developers perform a bayton. Switch fundamentally changing how. The app works after review to evade guidelines and commit forbidden and even criminal actions when such apps are discovered the rejected or removed immediately from the store and developers are notified of a fourteen day appeals process before their accounts are permanently terminated in two thousand nine hundred twenty about ninety five thousand aps removed from the app store for fraudulent violations predominantly for these kind of bayton switch maneuvers in just the last few months for example apple has rejected or removed apps that switched functionality. After initial reviews become real money gambling apps predatory loan issuers and pornography hubs used in game signals facilitate drug purchasing and rewarded users for broadcasting illicit and pornographic content via video chat. Another common reason apps rejected is simply ask users for more data than in need or mishandle the data that they do collect in twenty twenty. The app review team rejected over two hundred and fifteen thousand apps for those sorts of privacy. Violations believes privacy is a fundamental right and this commitment is a major reason why users choose the app store. Even with stringent review safeguards in place with one point eight million apps on the app store problems still surface users can report problematic apps by choosing the report a problem feature on the app store or calling apple support and developers can use either of those methods or additional channels like feedback assistant and apple developer support companies are always looking for ways to prevent or stop manipulating of their ratings for me once a company loses its review credibility. It's hard to get my confidence back. Apps store ratings and reviews helped many users make decisions about which apps to download and developers rely on them to incorporate new features that respond to user feedback. Apple relies on a sophisticated system. That combines machine learning artificial intelligence and human review by expertise to moderate these ratings and reviews to help ensure accuracy and maintain trust since twenty. Twenty apple has processed over one billion ratings and over one hundred million reviews and over two hundred fifty million ratings and reviews were removed for not meeting. Moderation standards apple also recently deployed new tools to verify rating and review account of anticipation to analyze written reviews for signs of fraud and to ensure that content from deactivated accounts is removed then there is account fraud unfortunately sometimes develop. Our accounts are created entirely for fraudulent purposes. If a developer violation is agreed or repeated. The fender is expelled from the apple. Developer program and their account terminated apple terminated foreign seventy thousand developer accounts and twenty twenty and rejected an additional two hundred five thousand developer enrollments over fraud concerns preventing these bad actors from even submitting an app to the store despite fraudsters sophisticated technology to obscure their actions apples aggressive monitoring means. These accounts are terminated on average less than a month after they are created. Apple's work to ensure the safety of users who download apps extends even be on the app store over the last twelve months apple found and block nearly a hundred and ten thousand illegitimate apps on their pirate. Storefronts these storefronts distribute militia software often designed to resemble popular apps or that modify popular apps without their developers. Authorization wall circumventing the app store security protections and in just the last month apple blocked more than three point. Two million instances of apps distributed illicitly through the apple developer enterprise program. The program is designed to allow companies and other large organizations to develop and privately distribute internal use apps to their employees that aren't available to the general public fraudsters attempt to distribute apps via this method to circumvent the rigorous review process or to implicate a legitimate enterprise or manipulating an insider to leak credentials needed to ship illicit content in addition to fraudulent developer. Accounts apple works to identify. Deactivate fraudulent user accounts in twenty twenty alone apple deactivated to earn forty. Four million customer counts to fraudulent and abusive activity. In addition foreign twenty four million attempted account creation were rejected because they displayed patterns consistent with fraudulent and abusive activities next is payment and credit card fraud. Financial information and transactions are some of the most sensitive data that users chair online apple has invested significant resources and building more secure payment technologies like apple. Pay and store kit which are used by more than nine hundred thousand aps to sell goods and services on the app store for example with apple pay credit card numbers are never shared with merchants eliminating a risk factor in the payment transaction process with online data breaches frustratingly common. These protections are an essential part of keeping user's safe but uses may not realize when their credit card information is breached or stolen from another source. Fraudsters may turn to online marketplaces like the app store to attempt to purchase digital goods and services that can be laundered or used for illicit purposes apple stated day focus relentlessly on. This kind of fraud is well in twenty twenty alone. The fusion of sophisticated technology and human review prevented more than three million stolen cards from being used to purchase stolen goods and services and ben nearly one million accounts from transacting again in total apple protected users from more than one point five billion in potentially fraudulent transactions from app review to fraudulent account detection to prevention of financial crimes. It's apparent apple works around the clock and behind the scenes to keep the app store safe entrusted place for users and developers alike. I hope this helps apple owners with reassurance and comfort on their digital app life on their devices. I hope you enjoyed this story this week. I urge you to join the facebook. "At a rapid pace and with every big title. It added significant number of paying subscribers. We can see that clearly if you look at revenue estimates starting with the first big release which was wonder woman back in december which was followed by. And you tom and jerry. And then the snyder of league and then godzilla vs kong right. At the end of march these have pushed. Hbo maxes monthly revenue to an all new high with twenty six twenty seven million dollars of net revenue that nets out to about thirty eight point. Two million gross revenue. Meaning the money that they make before apple takes and google. That's thirty percent growth from february month over month and more than one hundred percent growth from november before they started with these mega titles now mortal combat drops this weekend. The title been waiting for myself and in the coming months. They have a new space jam. That i'm also looking forward to and even a fourth installment of the matrix so these are big names that going to be released and hbo max stents to continue and continue the trend of growth. You might say well. Everyone is streaming online or through. But that's actually not true if you look at other apps from Discover plus discovery plus in really all the other ones that launched fairly recently. None of them are having as good a time as hbo mac so these titles the releasing to tv end theater at the same time all that. It's working well done. Also i heard this week. Snapchat mentioned that they're seeing big growth on android the so i took a closer look at the data to see what that's all about and also verify their statements and they're they are since two thousand seventeen. The ratio of downloads from iowa devices to android devices has grown drastically for snapchat in the social media world to x. ratio is pretty standard twitter instagram. And tiktok or all that range that means that for every download on an ios device there to downloads on an android device. This is pretty standard because android is much more common outside the us and all of these services are popular enough that there's a lot of demand for them in all countries in twenty seventeen snapchat ratio was only one point three which is a bit low but it climbed since quite a bit in two thousand eighteen. Iro's to just about to in two thousand nineteen got the two point. Four and in twenty twenty peaked at five point five as downloads. In india ballooned it since dropped a bit mainly because demand in india dropped significantly in two twenty twenty one. But it's still ahead of the game into march of this year snapshots iowa's to andrew. Download ratio was three point three x according to our intelligence. Now why is this important. Snapchat might be chasing instagram and tiktok but it has its own fan club. That's kind of large up until a few years ago. That was mostly made up of iphone users which really limited were snapchat can go but for snapchat to grow. They have to be sticky and other countries and other countries android so this growth is a really good sign for snapchat and for scaling in the future. Also this week. I think also also territory maybe at this point corn base kind of so last week coin based dominated the top charts because of its ipo and trope increases in cryptos and bitcoin and others. And we talked about that in the last episode. If you didn't listen you should but while that was happening..

"Get a podcast. Cast, you know, other in by other means of other apps. Fi, you know, knowing how RSS works or whatever. I've heard this conspiracy theory who didn't know that who who's is there anyone like though is one Senator who's like, I can't get info wars. I better looking at whether there's an alternative source of apps on the iphone. Are you suggesting that senators might not be like tech savvy? I don't know what I'm suggesting. Part of this, this whole free speech is is like, oh, you don't like Twitter, leave. Twitter. Apple has kept gab dot AI off of the app store for offensive content quote, unquote, which is kinda weird because you have a web browser on your platform. And we talked about this from the very beginning apple, you should ban porn apps, and we'd be like, yo. Safari as you can go to number dot com. Anytime you want. I mean, I think that's they want that. I think they're actually okay with that. I think they know this is apple space for our values are curated quote, unquote, curated selection because it's massive. And then the web is the open space, and I think they're very comfortable with that distinction set of apple. The question is whether anybody else understands that distinction, whether that's a sanction is important, whether in the face of regulatory scrutiny, that distinction even means anything. Those are wide open questions. I have no idea, but I think that's the distinction they've certainly made, but okay. So step back from I, I shouldn't have opened the doors bucks with step back from like giant like regulation questions and just look at who else has the opportunity or the the, the wherewithal to do an end around of either Apple's app store pricing or Google store entirely. Because the going assumption right now is if you're epic or if your net flix. Yeah, go for it. They, you're big enough. You got your own brand. You got your own direct customer relationships like you could totally pull that off, but like who else? Spotify immediately leads Spotify. We've Google New York Times, like is got a mixed model. Actually. You can subscribe on the web and then they all had mixed models right ever. All of these companies had I for years has been like sun up on the web, don't do this, but we have to do it. So yeah, I think the times the post could do it. Amazon bizarrely could do it right, like Amazon's doing some crazy shit on Android, they, I think they finally getting rid of that Netflix or that Amazon underground app that they had the the underground apps store. Remember that. Oh God. I mean, I think there's an endless list of these services. Now, the the point is making earlier about it being ten years later is this ecosystem is fully developed. It's mature the companies that have come up as companies who built software for the phone are now as big or bigger than the platforms themselves. They have options and I, there's no reason they wouldn't use them. I think the question is just how will apple and Google react, and I think they're in vastly different positions. School has is required, but it European Union to unbundle play services in the store from Android. So like whatever's going to happen, an Android is going to be drastic, and I think apple will being apple, probably more conservative, but the pressure is definitely there from these businesses that after a decade of shipping, mobile software are now deeply aware that they have their own customers there on customer relationships like Spotify tomorrow, it was like, hey. Sorry, we're canceling your IOS in that payment membership. Go sign up on.

"To further this interest and learn how to code and when the app store came out there was nothing i'm in because there was no documentation there's an nda you couldn't get information about how to do this the best you could do is read a bunch of books about matt coating which is different there's definitely overlap but it was hard to get started and he eventually after many months he wasn't there on day one after many months he came out with that flash card up in two thousand nine called math time and it was super simple it would display a math problem has like additions of traction multiplication division and then you could tap the flash card and see what the answer was so you could think in your head what the what the answer was and then check it and it's amazing to me the the reaction that that had in him because first of all a couple of things happened one is because he was so young when we're got out about this it was mentioned on like mac break weekly in the day at one point and it spread and suddenly he was on the local news and being interviewed with people all the stuff right it was it was still a clip of the local news video of him sitting her home talking with his brother his younger brother who did some of the design work but it was it was his reactions all that was interesting too because he realized very quickly that people were more interested in his age than his app and he did something that i thought was kind of interesting especially for kid of his age was only levin he said you know what i don't want do this anymore i wanna talk to anybody 'cause i unless they wanna talk to me about the code about my app because he didn't want he didn't wanna be a the personal interest story style store in the local news he wanted people to talk to him if they thought his code was good so we stopped talking to the press and he just kept coating and he's been doing it for a number of years now and really his interested in trying to help him and figuring out how to get the resources to learn how to do this is what got me into the iphone learn how to code myself that came much later but i was reading the books and try and help him out here and there so it's starting to pick it up a little bit along the way myself and it's really what got both of us started he's now twenty at uc berkeley in california and you know he's he's learning he's taking computer science he's going to be a computer engineer and so it really admits a story of how the app store it's just one example but i think there are ton of kids like him who now are just getting through college and are going to be the next programmers it's a whole generation of programmers are brought up on the i phone that's amazing i didn't know this story especially the local news part i know idea that it was this set of set bitty kid developer i it was very strange sure thank out in touch with us at one point two yeah it was pretty crazy time i'll tell you one little bit about that which was so the i think is abc came out in like the beginning of the summer of two thousand nine and a couple of months later i started getting messages from all over the internet on on twitter really that they had heard about owens app on the radio it turns out that rush limbaugh who i'm not a fan of rush limbaugh who is also very much an apple fan had found his app i think through mac break weekly and was making a point something about innovation in america and how you know the obama administration didn't have to incentivize innovation because there is lots of innovation and and here's an example and he talked about owens app linked it the sales blew up it was crazy that was the height of the the celebrity part of it that's that's just as ing i i love these stories.

"Can just go to maximize find the roundup of all the episodes and listen from the web player because we have a we have an unbearable player that people can go there and just listen from max oris so the will also be a dedicated section a hub if you will on maximize so that you will be able to find all of these articles and all of these happy seen a single place we wanted to to to celebrate the fact that the app store as allowed me personally to start max oris and eventually to grow this team and to have a podcast and to know so many people which is also the topic that we want to discuss today the sort of our personal stories about the obser an apps but before we jump into the topic i need to thank john because you've done in amazing job oh it's getting these interviews scheduled and working with developers and designers so i just need to thank you on the show because he's done an incredible job and i hope that people will like what we put together while thanks federico it's been a lot of fun doing it too and it's it's always fun when you get to talk to a lot of people who you write about there in the course of the year so this is one of those projects to that just felt absolutely perfect for mac stories because this is really this is this is what mac stories is all about so it's a perfect time to sit back take stock put it all in context and reflect a little bit about what the app store means both to us individually as the team that is writing for mac stories and then more broadly in the bigger community at large okay so as you said federico we thought we would talk a little bit about what the app store means to us and some stories behind that and you know i last fall wrote an article on maximum is called my app stores which was much of the backstory as to how came to be left my job as a lawyer and started working and writing with few mac stories but there's actually as with most stories you can turn the clock back even further and what really i think got me hooked was way back in like two thousand eight and two thousand nine at the very beginning of the app store because i had my son owen whose twenty now was ten when the app store launched and he wanted to learn how to code and he.

"Is this the kind of app where i see features going that might but up against what's allowed amac app store and if so abide on the website because i don't wanna be in the situation where in butter on the mac app store and then somehow have to do some sort of complicated migration to the website version or i just have to bite again it's just it becomes a hassle at that point i think one of the problems that we should probably talk about right off the bat is sandbox in because if you remember when sandbox in was instituted it was not when the mac gap store came out or it was the rules were tightened after the mac app store open so that was what i think drove some initial developers away from the mac apps store apps it needs system wide file access like super duper for instance or bb at it they couldn't really survive in their current form on the makeup store right because basically send boxing is effectively is that the canal gsm at classic analogy that prevents apps from just doing anything they want on the system it's based on these set of entitlements basically all roads or capabilities that apps and need to declare and say hey i'm an app that i and i want to be able to added to tax files in your downloads folder and uh or i want to modify system volume or i want to access your wifi network and stuff like that and one send boxing walls announced by apple there was a lot of criticism and pushback by the developer community and i remembered that send boxing the head of the day after which apple will require send boxing on new mecca apps on the ops or the date was delayed a by at least a couple of times because you read it they couldn't figure out how to work with about labour's and ultimately some boxing was enforced any stealing place on the makeup store and i am convinced that the way that it's been designed and the fact that apps as i mentioned with.

"Opera view that can spot these scott me products but instead search for something on the makeup source see what you find an it's a again very very sad state of affairs that's interesting i've i've had some experience with the use of the word four anap's because uh having written an app that's four the i tunes affiliate program after of you does look at that pretty carefully and they're very very careful to make sure that people use the word four but it sounds like these kind of these apps don't they may be didn't look beyond the the the title and and as to what the you know the app was actually doing one of the consequences and we're gonna get to some of the developer stuff in a second but what are the consequences of the problems we're talking about and one of the reasons it perpetuates itself in the store continues to stagnate is that there are a lot of apps lot amac apps that are never brought to the store because they can't for reasons were about to talk about or they just don't want to because there is for whatever reason it's not a good business decision i mean i having just done the my favorite matt gaps of 2017 article about a month ago i think of the forty apps that a featured i was surprised that more of a more on the app store the not i think there were about twenty five of them are so that we're actually on the app store but that's a still pretty goods it almost half of them were not available on the app store because either because from a technical standpoint they couldn't be or they had left the app store or they just decided that wasn't the place just that wasn't the best place to sell the software that's a that's an interesting point because it shows one of the advantages of the mac which is also possibly a problem for domecq cups or in that apple never remove the option to download and install software from trusted source he's on the mac you can use gatekeeper for example to make sure that you only get that you download suffer from the web that easa you know as a certificate from a trusted registered apple developer or of course.

"Sms which are are basically m made the makeup sore stay considerably behind the irs ops or because over time as the irs up store gained new features for developers and for users and eventually last year even this major redesign demak up source you'll see stayed behind with an old design no new features for developers as we're gonna talk about and basically no visible changes for users right and and one of the things for me there was really telling when i was putting together some of the show notes for this episode was one of the last things i did was i just did a general search on mac stories for mac app store and the entire first page of results were stories about problems of the house zubair clear health i mean including a couple of those retrospectives were in there and and i think it's fair to save you look back at those articles a pretty significant portion of them were were dedicated to going over some of those issues in those are issues that has you said i mean you can go all the way back to your one year anniversary peace in 2012 and those issues some of these issues have been there since day one and just never been cleaned up but i thought what would brought this to mind for me in recent weeks was that bug that surfaced i think it was last week where you can go into the system preferences unimak and basically put in any password in order to get into the mac app store preferences that are typically locked if you're not logged in the adleman user and it's not like the worst bug compared to similar ones we've seen recently and it's been addressed in the latest beta but it made me start thinking about the neglect of the mac app store and it does it just really at this point it's hard not to see it as anything button neglect because these problems have been lingering for so long but i thought one of the first things we should talk about um is just the look and feel it at the design of the of the mac up store the basically there there was i think one single some mall.
