"Kilometer size, that is like civilization will not have a good day. Right. That is a global catastrophe. So really anything bigger than about 50 meters across. We want to know their locations and trajectory future trajectories as far into the future as we can. And because anything above that size, as you say, you're taking out a city, bigger than that, you're taking out a continent. Or you're causing damage to a continent, and then even bigger than that, and you are causing there's an impact that is hitting the entire planet to some degree. What you may not get hit by the actual impact or the tsunami, you may very well have your crops fail because the skies are filled with smoke for 5 years. And this is where do you know where you're going to be in 2029 when a certain fascinatingly named object happens to pass near the planet? Home here. Watching the sky when it goes by. So sadly, where we are, we won't be able to see it when Apophis goes by in 2029, it's actually going to pass between us and your typical weather or communications satellite, up and synchronous orbit. And Australia and New Zealand have a really good view. So I'm thinking I may use this as an excuse to go down under if I can figure out the finances. Right. Give a few talks, watch an asteroid, fly past the earth. That would be kind of epic, wouldn't it be? Standing on a stage, giving a talk, and then everybody's stopping and watching this bright star fly across the sky. And then, yeah, that would be amazing. So you were starting to talk about various automated telescopes. There are networks of telescopes operating right now today that are tracking as many of these asteroids and comets as they can. Yeah, so for instance, if you've heard of any of a vast number of comet Atlas, comets, those are all getting found by the Atlas survey, which is run by the university of Arizona. There's neowise, which is using the wise telescope for a new purpose. And it's out there looking for cold things moving through this guy. All these different objects the Catalina sky survey. It's another university of Arizona project. Arizona is basically working very hard to keep us safe. But they have very crater. They know the consequences. That's a joke, people. So we have Catalina sky survey. We have all these different telescopes that are out there in a variety of different sizes, the zwicky transient facilities working out in California. And they are imaging regions of the sky that basically as much as they can, giving priority to the parts of the sky that are most likely to have asteroids and comets. So things near the disc of the galaxy are given priority. And they're looking for anything new that isn't already categorized and they are putting out alerts when new things are found. And coordinating through the minor planet center out in Boston, which is organized by the international astronomical union. And they're working to as quickly as they can refine the orbits that we have for these objects because we keep periodically finding things that when we get there initial orbit, we start by okay, we see it moving like this. Fit a circle to that, assume lots of error. And then figure out over time, what is within range of all that error. And as we get more and more observations that change in velocity across the sky that we see corresponds to our own motion and the asteroid's motion, and it gets to the point that only one orbit can fit the motion that we're seeing of that asteroid and the earth's orbit is well understood. And in the interim, though, between going from the approximating it with a circle to accurately well known orbit, occasionally we find things that look like they're going to hit the planet and these things are given a great deal of observational priority. I guess it's the best way to put it. Yeah, and actually there's one right now. And I forget the designation of it, but it was found on Valentine's Day. It's coming Valentine's Day. Oh, it's coming Valentine's Day. That's right. Yes. Yeah. In 2046. Let me pull up the information. Anyway. But this happens all the time, that astronomers find some object. They run their initial calculations and they go, uh oh. The future orbits of the asteroid, one of them crosses the earth. Or is within a certain error bar of crossing the earth. And then they go, uh oh, and then they call all the friends and say, could you double check my observations and keep tracking this asteroid so that we can all agree that this thing isn't going to be a danger. And this is what happened to Apophis. You are all familiar with Apophis because it was going to be making this close flyby in 2029. And then I think a few years later, we're going to come back around and had a chance. And now that chance has been dropped to zero, that enough observations have been made that we know for sure that this asteroid is not a threat to us in the foreseeable future. But it's amazing what we're capable of finding. So the current culprit in rising to the potentially dangerous asteroid list is 2023 DW. And on Valentine's Day, 2046, there is still in a one and I'm not finding the most accurate to the moment numbers, but as of last week, it was one in 607 chance of smacking us, which in the grand scheme of things is enough that we pay attention, it's 2046 that we have to worry, and we now know we can nudge these

"Flyby of earth, as you say, it's going to be coming within geostationary satellites. It should be visible with the unaided eye. You should be able to see across it'll kind of look like a satellite. You're going to see this giant tumbling rock. You're going to see something that's going to look like an like a satellite moving through the sky. But for very powerful earth based telescopes, this is going to be a wonderful opportunity. And so how does Osiris apex play a role in this I buy? It's going to be trying to so Apophis is going to fly by us in 2029. The mission is going to encounter Apophis in 2029. And it's going to be able to get those high resolution images that tell us what kind of a surface we're looking at. Is this something more like a co op that has a some rubbly surface, but mostly it looks like it's a solid ish object. Or are we looking at another rubble pile? And this radically changes the way we need to think about potential future deflection. If it turns out, every near earth object we look at is yet another rubble pile. Our ideas for deflecting it by, for instance, putting a rocket on an asteroid and pushing no, you're just going to push the rocket through the asteroid as we learn with Osiris Rex. Right. So getting an idea of the density of the solidity, the moment of inertia, all of these different physical parameters allows us to start to contemplate how do we actually deflect these things in the future. It was interesting with the dart mission how much of a change in the orbit of the asteroid actually happened. And when you sort of think about asteroids like Apophis, could we stop them? Could we solve something at the last minute? And what's going to be the best approach? Dart gave us a really good solid foundation. But being able to now take that knowledge and then compare it against another asteroid and another asteroid and keep doing this. I think the other thing that will be really interesting is when the path doesn't make its close flyby, will the tidal forces of getting that close to the earth. If it is a rubble pile, will it elongate will it start to start to change its shape, it would be interesting to see what happens. Things I hadn't thought of and now I need to run calculations on just to figure out well, I think the Roche limit of the earth is much, much closer, like a few tens of thousands of kilometers, but actually GPS satellites or the geostationary orbit is what? 50 ish thousand? I think what it is. 38,000 miles. I forget that I forget the actual geostationary orbit. But it's going to be very close to us. And it'll be interesting to see what happens to the asteroid as it passed. Very exciting. And just a great next use for Osiris Rex now Osiris apex. I love it. All right, so we talked about Osiris Rex and its future. I think that qualifies as an existing mission that is already in a tremendous amount of science. I think you have foiled my hopes to talk about completely upcoming missions. Let's try again. Give me another mission that you are excited about that is happening in the future. So we have Lucy has launched its on its way. It gets to Jupiter's L four in 2027. It gets to its L 5 and 2033. There's going to be an asteroid. We see in 2025. So basically we have a, if it's an odd year, awesome stuff happens in the future. Right. Now, why is Lucy going out to the Trojan regions of Jupiter? We just don't know what these outer objects are like. Are these entirely icy objects? We periodically see centaurs become active like comets become active. Are the Trojans basically the same where they went through some sort of a interaction they could suddenly flare out with activity. Are they rocky? Are they rubble piles? What's going on? We want to know. And so it's going to be able to explore multiple objects, and along the way, pick out an asteroid in the asteroid belt, and it's just amazing to see with all these different missions what kinds of chaos the solar system has created. We just keep finding moons of Jupiter and Saturn that are weirder and weirder and so this raises the question are these larger Trojans going to be more like Ganymede or more like cheery Geary? I want to know if we have more round things or more rubber duckies. And people don't know that and I love to bring up this fact that there are many objects in the Trojan belt as there are objects in the asteroid belt. These are busy places. Yeah. And so you're going to get this and by having all of these objects collected together, you're going to have this opportunity to fly past many different objects and take a really interesting sample of all of them. And as you say, in some cases, they could just be like main belt asteroids, but maybe they're like Kuiper belt objects. Maybe they're like captured comets that got snuffed out and held in Jupiter's gravity. And they've picked this variety of objects and they're part that I find really interesting as well. As they do more observations of these worlds, they keep discovering more moons of the objects, which then gives them more targets to go after. Interrupted 12 at this point. And when you find an object with a moon that moon allows you to get more accurate mass determination and figure out all sorts of other details you wouldn't be able to figure out. So yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. Now, but Lucy has had a bit of a problem with the solar panels. Yeah, they didn't quite want to lock into place. So they are deployed and I think it's fair to say that they are concerned but not panicked. Yeah, I don't think they're even concerned now. So originally like one locked into place. If you look at the solar panels, there are these giant discs and they unfold almost like an umbrella, but imagine a flat umbrella. And one of them unfolded perfectly. The other one unfolded, but didn't get all the way. And so then they tried pulling it back, putting it forward again, tried a couple of ideas. And in the end, they were able to sort of mess with the tension of the cable that pulls it out. And they were able to get to 90 7% or something. So very close. And based on that, they feel like it's got enough power to reach and handle its mission. The big problem with Jupiter is that it's so far away from the sun. Yes. Your solar panel is experienced. One 25th, the amount of energy that experience in Earth orbit. And so the Jupiter is the limit of where solar powered spacecraft can really flee to. And so they were worried that it wouldn't have enough power when it was actually at the out of the Trojan belt. But it looks like it's going to be fine. So at this point, it's not latched, but they're fine with it.

I've been a space astronomy journalist for over 20 years with me. Is doctor Pamela gate, a senior scientist for the planetary science institute, and the director of Cosmo quest. Hey, Pam, how are you doing? I am doing well. It is, as we record this December 5th and by the time this will go out to our podcast listeners, there will have been an occultation of Mars and I am deeply hoping I am able to see it and because I am me, I fully expect to be clouded out, but yeah, I'm going to be clouded out. Yeah. But I'm excited. And also another flyby of Artemis going past the moon. To earth. That is a current pretty much right now. Right now. Pretty much. Yeah, exactly. As we're recording, our making its flyby of earth and the whole thing is being broadcast live. It's an exciting week. Yeah, yeah. I don't know. It feels like the space news is ramping up and ramping up. But I think it's probably because we've got GWS T, just injecting a whole new enormous amount of space and astronomy news into this journey. So last week, we talked about the missions that we're saying goodbye to. This week, we're going to talk about some upcoming missions to say hello to. Some are brand new. Others are recycled. Now, has health frozen over, is that what's going on here? Are we about to talk about things that are going to happen in the future? So I find myself more than willing to talk about missions that are out there moving in our solar system but have not yet either gotten to the object they're aiming for or have sent back science data and yeah, I'm actually going to be willing to acknowledge some missions that almost launched and will be launching soon and then everyone is talking about that. I'll take it. You know what? You don't need justified anymore. I'll take it. Done. Sold. Let's do it. Whatever kitchen scraps I can scavenge here to share my enthusiasm for the future, I am a 100% on board. So pick a commission. What do you want to talk about? Oh, Cyrus RHex. The mission we watched launch together. Exactly. This mission has a sweet spot in my heart, not just because it's a mission I got to work on, but also because it's a mission that almost flew into literally flu itself into and asteroid. And the more we learn about its sample tag, the sillier, the entire situation, is because gravity was so low when they went to calculate the force of friction on the mission as it plunged its sample arm into the asteroid by accident. The friction was essentially zero. And I just love the fact that they plunge roughly half a meter into the asteroid, discovering it was the consistency of a ball pit with essentially zero friction going in. So what would that, I mean, what would be something with like zero friction going in. So you're seeing like a ball pit. Where they're being held together with almost no gravity. And so as you push the collector in, the material just shoves away very easily for it to be able to grab it sample. So the amount of frictional force an object experiences is a combination of the force between the object and the thing that is causing the friction. So it's the normal force, basically. And the normal force is very, very, very low. When a human being's force onto the object from gravity would be the equivalent of a sheet of paper on your hand on earth. So you have a very low normal force. And then that combination of low normal force and a not very high value of friction anyways just works out to essentially zero as it plunged into that ball pit of rocks that made out that rubble pile asteroid and it's going to bring us its sample of rocks that was basically shoved full of as it plunged down in September of 2023 and the mission has been approved to go on and I have to always look at how to say this. It is, it is becoming Osiris apex. As it goes off to explore the asteroid Apophis and it should see Apophis in 2029. Now, Apophis is a very interesting asteroid. This is the one that astronomers had tagged as one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids that we knew of, why is Apophis such an interesting target for Osiris to do after it delivers its samples. So this is an asteroid that is fairly large, which means that if it hit us, it would be devastating. And it's going to come between us and the geosynchronous satellites in a few years. And that's a little bit too close for comfort and not only is it coming to that close to earth, but if it had passed through a gravitational sweet spot called the keyhole is what it got named, if it had passed through this gravitational sweet spot, it meant that it was going to come back. And smack us directly in the farther out future, but still within our lifetimes, assuming we don't get hit by a car or something. Within our naturally expected lifetimes and they had run the math and figured out that if that impact occurred, it would occur in the Pacific Ocean and thus we were going to face essentially Lucifer's hammer kind of a future where

"Randy yedinak never agreed to an interview But we did go back and forth on email Yet Enoch said he thought the issue of Anthony gay didn't play a huge role in the election And to be fair reading newspaper articles and social media from the time it does seem like there were lots of other issues Local police didn't think up was friendly enough with law enforcement People characterized him as stubborn not willing to cooperate with others in the criminal justice system Which I can believe that adds up for someone willing to do what he did on the Anthony gay case In the end Apophis pummeled He lost 60 to 40 Do you think that the Anthony gay thing had enough influence on the race that it made a difference It's hard to say It's hard to say It was a big voting block With that union And that it wasn't just the union also because that anti law enforcement sentiment or he's not going to stand up for officers also trickled over into regular law enforcement And so So you're not sure if the race would have been different in Anthony gay not have happened One way or the other No I don't know It at least in my opinion it at least would have been a lot closer I may not have won that election anyway I don't know We'll never know So after all this happens in the state's attorney's race did your way you felt walking around town change I mean this is your hometown Did it change the feeling at all Nobody likes to lose And to lose publicly I mean politics is rough It's a rough business And especially as a prosecutor you're elected to make the tough decisions to make the tough calls And if that means that someday you're not in that spot then so be it And politics there's no justice in politics A puff said if he had to do it again it still worked to recalculate gay sentence But he'd be more diplomatic about the whole thing Reach out to the union maybe work on his talking points So the press coverage was better He thinks if people would have understood that he was just following the rules They'd see how he was truly a Law & Order guy Not some enemy of law enforcement But honestly I'm not sure if that's true I don't think a puff story is about how he failed to explain things well enough I think it's a story about how Law & Order isn't really what the prison system is run on At least not Law & Order.

"And he also helped develop century two. He said, the fact that century couldn't automatically handle the arcasi effect was a limitation. Every time we came across a special case, like asteroids, Apophis, bennu, and 1950 DA, we had to do complex and time consuming manual analyses with century two, we don't have to do that anymore. So that's a key advantage to century two over century one. Okay, now century one couldn't calculate the orbital changes due to their cost effect. It also could not deal with asteroid orbits that got really close to the earth. When you have an asteroid that happens to get really, really close to the earth and is gravitationally affected much more than normally when it does is it creates all sorts of uncertainties in the future orbit of the asteroid. So it makes it much, much harder to predict what's going to happen after the gravitational interaction with the earth at such close range. You guys have probably heard of keyholes. So those are specific areas in space that if an asteroid went through the keyhole, it could because it went through that keyhole in that specific position, then its next orbit or a subsequent orbit will hit the earth because it went through that keyhole. So you'll often hear about an asteroid going through a keyhole. If it goes through that keyhole, we're kind of screwed in 20 years or 30 years or a hundred years, whatever it is, when it comes back, because that keyhole made it changed its orbit just enough so that next time it comes around, it gives us a whack. So that's kind of related to that. Now century one could not could not calculate that. If an asteroid was going to come really close to the earth, century one could not calculate in the future if it could hit the earth with high confidence, century two can do that. So that's another huge plus for century two. And century two is so exquisitely sensitive that it could tell you the odds of an impact, even if it's as low as three chances in 10 million. So it's very, very sensitive. And so I do feel a little safer now, but I won't be happy until we have that deflective beam obelisk from that classic episode. Yes. What was he called Paradise syndrome? That would be nice, but I don't think we're going to create a deflective beam obelisk in the ever actually ever. In the ever. Right. And so obviously there's a two pronged approach here. We need to detect the asteroids and we need to work on the technology to deflect them. Right. And the key is not to just detect it, but to detect it so far in the future. So time to deal with it..

"Yes. Actually this is just cheered me up a little bit this dude, 'cause we seem to be making some progress in doing at least in doing our due diligence to find asteroids that could potentially be dangerous to us or to earth. This is a new impact in monitoring system. That's now online that could calculate deadly asteroid orbits better than the one that's been calculating for us for the past 20 years. There's a new study describing the system called century two, and it was published in the astronomical journal this past December 1st. So let's first talk about what century one had been doing ever since 2002. So the jet propulsion laboratory JPL, I developed the software almost 20 years ago. What it can do in less than 60 minutes basically, it could accurately tell you the orbit of a newly discovered asteroid for the next 100 years and of course whether it would hit the earth or not. Now, this wasn't a part time job for the software either because we've detected something like 28,000 near earth asteroids NEAs. 28,000 have been found and we find an average of 8 more every day, 3000 a year, every year, every day, 8 more, 8 more, 8 more. And how near is nearby in this context? There's different classes, but near earth is within, you know, relatively near within millions of miles, many millions of miles, which is actually kind of close. If you think about it. So to deal with this clearly scary situation, as I describe it, JPL manages the center for near earth object studies, CN EOS. So now it's their job to run the numbers on every orbit for every near earth asteroid that's discovered. And it does this to support an office, probably the coolest office name ever, NASA's planetary defense coordination office, and I think we've talked about that. Haven't we? I think we talked about that once. I just like my favorite office of all time, right? Planetary defense. It's like that. What's that company? General atomics. It's just such a, such a great 1950s ring to it. So what they do is they provide early detection for potentially hazardous objects. That's PHOs. And okay, so PHOs they're within 5 million miles. If you're within 5 million miles, that's a, which is a type of NEA. But they're clearly much more hazardous because you're only 5 miles 5 million miles away within that. So that means Evan that near earth asteroids, I think are farther than 5 million, obviously. There's planetary defense office also categorizes the PHOs as 30 to 50 meters because that because when you get to that size and that those speeds and the kinetic energy, you can do significant damage. They also this office also tracks and characterizes these PHOs and they issue warnings and stuff like that. So very, very cool. So the center for near earth object studies, they help the planetary defense coordination office and they use this sentry software to assess the asteroid orbits. And they were doing it for years. But the rate of discovery is going to be going up very, very soon. As new and much more powerful survey, telescopes, or as my niche used to call them skeletones. That was such an awesome mispronunciation. So these new powerful telescopes are going to start looking for near earth asteroids and they anticipate an influx of newly discovered asteroids, and they need to be able to keep up with that. And we need to also be even more accurate because it's going to be so many that the chances we could find something that could potentially be nasty. So they came out with century two, which is essentially an upgrade. It's an upgrade to the century software. So century two is obviously like number one in that it can accurately calculate orbits based on gravitational interactions. That's key. You might think that that's what orbits are all about, right? Gravitational interactions. And you'd be mostly right because the asteroid any given asteroid will interact gravitationally mainly with the sun, right? It's interacting with the sun gravitationally, but the orbit of the asteroid could also be impacted by other planets, right, and including the earth, of course, so that so that plays in too. But there are non gravitational interactions. That can happen to the orbit that can impact the orbit. They're not based on gravity at all. And century one could not handle them. And so what do you think that might be, guys? What would impact the orbit that's not gravitational? Solar web thing? Have you kind of it's called the yarkovsky effect. So now imagine an asteroid spinning, which they do. So as that happened, as it's spinning, the side that was heated by the sun eventually spins away from the sun and faces the opposite direction and it cools down. So that infrared energy is released as it cools, and that minute thermal energy acts as a force that that's a kind of like a little mini engine a little bit of thrust that over time can actually change the orbit of an asteroid. Now, day to day, of course, that is negligible. You could just completely discount it fully. But after decades or centuries, it could act your effect can actually make dramatic changes to an orbit, and they're very, very difficult to calculate. So difficult that century one, which had some very slick mathematical algorithms, it couldn't calculate it. But this is what century two will be able to do. Now, do you guys remember Apophis, right? That's probably one of 20 famous. Yeah, one of the most famous asteroids out there. And mainly because for a little while there, we actually weren't sure what if it was going to hit the earth at some point more around 2068 when it came back again after the 2029 was it? So we weren't really sure because we couldn't rule out that impact in 2068, and that's why so many people actually know about Apophis. Now the reason why we couldn't rule it out at that time was mainly because of this yarkovsky effect. They hadn't fully nailed down that what the impact is on the thermal energy that's hitting that asteroid. Of course we do know now we have fully fleshed out the yarkovsky effect on Apophis and we know that Apophis is not going to is not going to hit us for at least well over a hundred years. So don't really don't worry about Apophis. But that's yarkovsky effect right there. That's why people were so scared of a pop is because we hadn't really nailed it yet. "Cover girl 26 passed on America in the morning, leaving the confines of Earth. It's Jim Bohannon on the offbeat fly Me to the moon. Let me play. Among the stars. Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars. Mars is approaching its furthest point from the sun, which means Mars Rovers, which depend on solar panels need every bit of sunlight they can get. Trouble is, Mars is pretty dusty, and those panels get covered with dust. NASA has tried using the deployment Motors on the rotors, which initially unfold the solar panels to in effect, shake the panels. But that hasn't done the trick. Now they seem to be succeeding by trickling a few bits of sand onto the panels. These large particles Bounce off the paddles, taking smaller dust particles with them. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but it seems to work and will apparently have to until we finally deploy in dust on future Mars missions. Mars Perseverance Rover. Having shown it can fly a helicopter up there is now kicking in its main science work, driving to a place called the Jet zero crater, looking for any signs of ancient microbial life. In pursuit of that, since the crater has all kinds of different geologic features. They've got a map with optional side routes, and so on. NASA's jet propulsion Labs like is it to an old auto club type map? Or maybe the type of Matt found in cruise missiles? As is trying to find all the rocks out there which could do a serious harm should they crash into Earth. And to that end, they're planning to launch the near Earth Objects. Surveyor Space Telescope. Presumably with a sense of urgency in five years.
