Must be her last week but I something happened but I'm fine finds a way. Yes thanks for having me here. Thank you for coming out okay. We weren't spiteful at all things happen. It's crazy and you know. Time is very important so like just spending time here to listen to talk to us and also let our listeners. Here are some of the cool stories. I mean you. You've had like a wonderful story of different experiences that you've had. I think kind of just start off the very very beginning very good place to start as they say in Santa Music the beginning beginning of okay so the beginning I I started out as a member of comedy team and Leo Benvenuti who is my writing partner. Also we we wrote all those movies together and we toured for fifteen years as comedy act and then ultimately came out to Los Angeles and ninety one where where we coming? Crap FROM CHICAGO BILL. Yeah Yeah I know I. Yeah bill homes in Leo and I we go back. Maybe forty years. He was telling me about a bit. You guys used to do with your own version of. Who's on first with all he would use the actual names cubs players. Leo and I. We used to do an act. That other comics loved We would always wh what's called plate in the back of the room. We could get the wait staff and the bartenders and the laugh. We knew we were good and one of the bits. We always did that. The audience is never got but other comics. Loved ones are who's on first. You know the WHO's on first bitter so we would do it but we would just replace the names with the nine hundred sixty nine cub saw lately. I would say to me. He'd say Yes Steve and I'm a big fan of the cubs. But you know I I said I would say I never remember the names of the guys and all. That's easy we had. Let's see we had Santo on Third Becker on second we had banks on. I and I'd go what's on. I'm trying to find out the first basement banks. The Guy Plane I because banks. The man first base banks. I said look all I'm trying to find out was becker down. I he goes. No BANKS IS ON I. I'm not asking you a Santo is on. I know he's on third base in bad shape. I watched some of your Skits online and Billy Billy was the billing me cracking You know what people often said. Well you guys should do a show a like a reunion show but I. I don't think we could do billy. I mean it's it's suicide. It's a very it's about About a suicide hotline and I think that's maybe answering the phone. It's a seven-year-old supposed to be sweeping up at his uncle suicide hotline and his father and finds out that his uncle to go out for a minute and he's been taking calls the seven year. Old Kid has been taking calls bid but there's people that I love dark comedy. It's how I've gotten through some of the toughest times in my life so there is an audience for it. There is Jim on Youtube so go out for sure. Think we put it up there somewhere near lives on forever. The WHO's on first bit was great because the audience the look on their faces was often like why. Why are these guys? Saying those words layer you have to another for and just hearing the roars of laughter from. I always a fun bit to do yet. I was over sideways. Would go on. Was that the Stephen Leo. Shot Stephen Lewis Guys. Come to another another part of that. Bit was You got an outfielder. Of course we have an outfielder. You might tell me the off. Hitler's name Billy Williams. I don't know I just thought I'd like to know if you know the bit. It's hysterical if you don't know the bits you play so so you come to California. When was it in the ninety one while we had a shot in ninety We got a call from this producer out here who wanted us to do a pilot for an ABC late night. Talk Show called the Stephen Leo. Show I don't know if you remember Rick Dees was Had A late night show Adam Ninety s and they were he was going to be retiring and they were looking for replacements so we came out here and we did a pilot and it didn't sell but a year later the same producers were doing The Carol Burnett Show Carol Burnett Show in ninety one which sounded fantastic. Here's Carol Burnett the I kind of the seventies we're gonNA bring her into the nineties. The producers get Rocco or BC. And Neil Marshall Rocco had worked doing all of George Carlin's comedy shells it worked with the lately Tomlin They were just great guys. We're GONNA bring. They were Gonna. Bring Carol into the nineties and within two weeks it was just a clearly. This was not going to ask. Writing Staff was amazing. It was It was me and Leo and went on to write a lot of good movies. It was built Brady who went on to create The Big Bang Theory was small share and Mike Armstrong who won an academy award with Steven Wright for a small film. Was Ron hoagie. Who went on and wrote for the simpsons so it was just this young talent yea real young and it was clear from the get go that this was just not gonna work so what happened was it was like the type of humor that Carol and like a lot of the greats hab it just it better i. She thought she might WanNa be ready to come in and do like some comedy and stuff and you know stretch a little but it just wasn't working. Yeah but it was. It was it got us out here. A that was a member. My son was five years old and my wife and I decided well look. I've got this job. Let's just move out to California and pack up and move so we packed up and moved. I came out July. They came out in October and the show was cancelled in November. So I renew that happened and then and then the cat. Just kinda snowball where we started. We went and we worked on the Dennis Miller show for a while and then I saw the Santa Claus and it was just turned.

"To morning becomes eclectic I man lifts and always a pleasure to be joined in the studio by Mr Erin bird good morning here the morning sun a great thank you nice to see you and you're a spiffy jacket there thank you thank you very much John look I know it's radio bearing has risen to the occasion looks good on the air are what I knew I was coming in to see you have to look to impress right so set us up for this Robert Glasper session I know you hosted it was live at apogee tell me a little bit about it yeah it turned out to be a pretty special magical night I've been to several of the apogee sessions and I've posted a handful and it was interesting I mean there was some there was clearly something in the air that night I had no idea that it was going to manifest itself in what turned out to be a pretty incredible interview and Robbie's he's funny very gregarious incredibly generous and it it just turned out to be quite special haven't heard the session yet so I don't want to give away too much but I for instance I asked him about the death of his mother and how that's affected him she was the reason why he got into music we talked about an incredible film caught the cry of jazz they came out late fifties it was the first the first film where a black man yells at a white man that's been recorded yeah we went all over the place no I no and he was incredibly candid it sounds like yeah absolutely absolutely and we we have a relationship not by no means are we tied or anything so I think that that sort of helped in a level of comfort yeah and and yeah it I mean people were pretty blown away by the whole night if I if I do say so myself and I don't mean that because I was a part of it or had anything to do with it there was just I don't know if there was something in the air and it was palpable well I think people when people think about Robert Glasper listen to his music and I feel like he was sort of in the forefront of this whole jazz meets hip hop sort of I don't know cook I don't know the word I'm looking for is but but he really I think was among the first to really meld that with those two worlds together right not that they weren't cond completely connected anyway no no absolutely I I think what you're referring to is sort of the the latest incarnation of that yes right yes and and certainly I mean you know he's his his fingers literally are all over to pimp a butterfly yet intrigue seminal album you know he's he's played a role in part and and bridging of the old guard in jazz with the new when it comes to sessions or inspirations is courtesy of Herbie Hancock to hide his coyote so yeah he's he's he he plays a central role in this new sort of a resurgence of jazz certainly yeah I love that well let's get into the session it's Robert Glasper recorded at apogee studios couple months ago and it is morning becomes eclectic.

"Jason Bentley from apogee studios in Santa Monica and for KCRW metric. Let's let's welcome Emily and Jimmy back to the stage guys. So, hey, thank you for joining us here. KCRW? I know you're in the midst of a tour how how has it been going so cool like the so the Bill is us Anna banned from Mexico called Zoe and a ban from Canada called July talk. So we're just kind of give him a big hug to the whole continent. And like it's just been an amazing group of people really just exactly what I needed for my spirit. And I feel like the show has so much positivity and inclusiveness and amazing energy Soto's about what was the concept behind doing. Just that with these other bands came together any MRs soon, as you know, there's options on the table. And that was like, you know, there's this sort of undercurrent at least for me of a lot of teams that are very upsetting and disturbing right now. And it's like as an artist how do you address things without talking about them all the time people come to a show to be free of that stuff? And I just felt like the symbolism of having Spanish-speaking band. They're huge Mexico. We're gonna play with them in Mexico. And are you are you outspoken about these themes and ideas, or is it something self evident because you're together playing? Well, that's kind of what I feel is is a bit of a topic in our group of friends and eight on society at large is like, how do you? How do you manifest your your beliefs in action? So hopefully, that's what metrics been doing. So congratulations, art of doubt, your seventh album as the band. What a great record..

"apogee studios" Discussed on KCRW

"See bucking Buckingham of liquid MAC recorded live here at KCRW. We are playing we are sharing. Some some music memories recorded live here in our studios on the very last day that we are broadcasting from the basements here at the station were moving to a new space where certainly excited about all that the future holds. But we're also looking at the years we've spent in the basement, which is a lot of time and the new the new performance space at the new studio, you know, part is happening in part because of the excitement and success and all the great feelings, we have about live performances era KCRW, and we play that Lindsey Buckingham piece. It was recorded in nineteen Ninety-three and Krista rita's just called us. He can't stop by this morning, but he called us up, and he told us that. And this predates my time. I don't know if you around ninety three or not. Well, anyway, it was during the pledge drive and the performance GIO, which is much smaller than even the one. We have here was full telephones and people taking calls for the pledge drive so Lindsey Buckingham came and sat across from Chris just in the studio, right where I am with an acoustic guitar and did his live session and Daniel Anwar subsequently came in. And was you know, kind of apparently freaking out over the vibe of this place and a special. It was and talked to Chris who was music director at the time and said, you know, you guys should put these out an album's, and hence, hence, we had rare on air exactly several volumes. You mentioned the fund raisers, and the membership drives people know, you know, what public radio does to raise money, we go to you guys the audience, and and to do that KCRW is always assembled. Oh, the whole group of forty fifty people time they occupy their performance studio adjacent to where we are now. And so a shadow to everyone has come down over the years because we've done. At least a couple of year. I've met sort of lifelong friends from coming in and. Yeah. We've had volunteers get married from coming in at this place is really run on volunteers. And all of you have been in. Here are an integral part of what makes this place special and all the volunteers. When you think about it? It's it's a village. It is a village. You know, what I also remember is when the volunteers would be sitting in the performance studio behind us, and Jason you, and I would always know we were in trouble when they were all had the newspapers up, and they're reading the papers because nobody was calling on the phone, and everybody's reading papers like the LA the LA times. And they would be like, oh, no. They're reading the paper. That was a good indication that they weren't going. No one. No. It's on now. So yeah, just a precious memories. And thinking about all the the producers and the work that's been done here thinking about Joe Frank in that that studio over over here at night when I was on. Oh, yes. Same here at night. I could look over and see the greats Joe Frank working on his program dark room once in a while he'd he'd come over and ask about whatever song I was playing because maybe it was some kind of atmospheric electric thing. And he wanted to borrow it for our show. So many great memories here as we and the very last day. Do you have a and again, I'm putting you on the spot. Do you have an all time favorite basement moment? Get kind of covers a wide swath or favorite morning becomes. I know you've been playing some of your favorite morning becomes eclectic. Live performances really impossible to say, there's so many little moments, and I'll add up and also when you when you do it's so often, you know, when you're just on producing, and you have this this this platform, it becomes much more. About the details of of getting it. Right. You know, you kind of happiest about the and one. For basketball fans, you're excited about the end one. Yes. And so I think win win the execution is just really there when it's a great live session. And the interview felt good. And we just hit it on time. You know, it's it's like hitting the post there's very little radio jargon. We always have to work with a clock. You know, we're always trying to get to NPR in time. And keep it keep it tight keep it efficient. So I know this is this is sort of inside baseball for a lot of people. But yeah, I mean, this is this is just a magical magical place, and it's knowing full well that we have studios that we're going to take it to a whole other level share absolutely create more magic for for the audience. But but just looking back at so many years in this basement studio, it's pretty special. It really is an I saw I if you get a chance go check out Jason's Instagram because you posted something yesterday that was really a special. We have these photographs in master control of each music director with somebody different. And I'm looking at Tom. Nobble over there with mongo Santamaria, and you know, all the way through to to you and to Chris with Lou Reed. I mean, pretty pretty special. Yeah. All right. Well, let's take a break. We do have a live session coming up not one that we recorded here in the basement. It was done recently at apogee studios, which is a partner studio, we sometimes do evening sessions, and you hosted this with Nick Waterhouse who has a brand new album out today. And he is a darn nice guy. I. Great show. He brought his whole big band on stage. And we had a great conversation, and it was cool performance. So we're going to bring that to you at eleven fifteen it's Nick Waterhouse live for you. And also we're gonna have tickets to see Nick Waterhouse at the regent theatre downtown on April twenty sixth. So as Krista rita's would stay would say stay close.
