"Also in maryland. A law aimed at supporting resident experiencing a mental health crisis. Goes into effect today. The thomas bloom. Raskin act is named after congressman. Jamie raskin son who took his own life earlier this year. Wmu's maryland reporter dominique. Marie of an esi spoke with. Liz aparicio a professor of behavioral and community health with the university of maryland school of public health. It's glenn to expand that states to learn one crisis call center so that trained counselors will periodically check in with people who've pre registered to receive calls rather than waiting for that person who's struggling in the moment themselves to reach out while they're increases and hopefully this will lead to earlier intervention and referral to mental health treatment. And other supports congressman. Jimmy raskin has been very vocal about the issue of suicide What does it mean to have. An elected official talks candidly about it. I have been really proud of representative raskin for using his platform in the way that he has to raise awareness about suicide prevention and really to model how his family is handling the aftermath of his son's death by suicide earlier this year. It is just so important to be able to speak openly about suicide just as we would with any other public health issue so it can be addressed directly without judgment or shame as a preventable health issue. I think another thing that we see with the raskin family experiences. That suicide doesn't discriminate. You know there are multiple reasons why people become suicidal and die by suicide so it really lifts sat veil and shows the range of folks who can be affected and families that can be affected by suicide. Do you think those calls will continue to increase coming out of this pandemic as we try to get back to some semblance of prepaid endemic life. I think that they will. And i think we may actually see an uptick in calls as people are going through this next transition so anytime that there's a major change in our lives. There's an adjustment that has to happen to that. So even if it's something that's exciting. Perhaps like kids going back to school were returning to the workplace or being able to see friends again. Those are still changes that we have to adjust to and so we really need to Give ourselves that time and space for those adjustments and not to give ourselves a hard time. If we're not super happy all the time we want to know that the range of reactions that we may be having is normal though. I won't be surprised if thing's increased for a while they get more intense as we're coming out of the pin oven and then just finally. I wonder you know people hearing this. You know maybe going through struggles of their own. Do you have any advice for those struggling with mental health currently either from the pandemic or as they are getting back to some semblance of normalcy. There's just never been a more important time to recognize that really. It's okay to be okay. It's understandable on. This is the time to reach out and take care of one. Another to support one another's mental health as well as get support for ourselves really going to need to work on building and continuing to strengthen our social support structures so that we are not struggling through these times alone that was w used dominique array of an se interviewing liz aparicio an assistant professor of behavioral and community health with university of maryland school of public health. And if you or someone you know is thinking about suicide. The number for the national suicide prevention lifeline is eight hundred two seven three eight two five five. Thanks for joining us for. "In two thousand fourteen, a woman was pulled over by Myrtle beach police in Myrtle beach South Carolina. The woman was black and the police said they pulled over because of a tail light. They found a small amount of marijuana in her car and she was given the option to avoid charges if she told them where she got marijuana. As one officer later put it, she was asked quote who she knows. She, says she did know someone, but she didn't know his full name. She only knew him as Jules. My name is Julian bitten and right now. I'm in a Conway South Carolina. The police drove the woman to Julian Buttons apartment. They wired her with a hidden video camera and audio recorder, and then they gave her a hundred dollars and told her ass. Julian button to sell her marijuana. Julian is black and in two thousand fifteen. He was thirty years old. It was a friend of Mario de time girlfriend it was. She had some problems after father who died, so she had a medical discharge from the military. And she had asked me for some and I gave her some in first, and they told her to come back and buy from me, so that's what she did. The woman came out with what police recorded as approximately seven grams of marijuana. She'd done what the officers asked her to do, but something had gone wrong with the video recording. So they waited a few weeks, gave her hundred more dollars and drove her back to Julian Ben's house. What I didn't expect her to come back and buy. That was kind of strange that she came back and wanted to buy was like okay. We'll hear what that's not naming. are this ain't something is going become a habit? She would for her because I knew her situation I don't know I think I think she was pretty much more scared than anything when police stopped. If, they if she didn't give some if she didn't give a person gave. It's award that she was going to go to jail and Louis, her military benefits. On the second visit. The woman bought approximately eight grams. And there a video recording. This gave officers from the Fifteenth Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit probable cause to get a search warrant for Julian Ben's apartment. The Fifteenth Circuit Drug, enforcement. Unit pulls together. Officers for multiple police departments across Ori- and Georgetown counties in South Carolina. It stated intention is to create a multi jurisdictional multi-agency task force to address major drug enterprises. When you look at the operational plan, the Drug Enforcement Unit created for their search of Julian Buttons apartment. The first thing you see is their insignia. Large drawing of a skull and crossbones in front of a marijuana leaf. There's also a sword and a lightning bolt. Underneath that her a sort of motto. Serving Our community. One dealer at a time. I'm phoebe judge. This is criminal. Julian vet lived in a building with four apartments in Myrtle beach. On April sixteenth two thousand fifteen. Just before three o'clock in the afternoon, his next door neighbor Santos Garcia was outside working on his moped. Julie Ben was inside playing video games. Julian pause the game to go to the bathroom. And upon coming out of my bathroom, I hear, allow bone and I'm thinking my name upstairs. Neighborhood dropped something. That's all heard. Was it would okay? What are you doing? Upstairs was kind of a thought, but as I'm looking up getting ready to say that my aparicio's se objects coming at me in my living room. So, I'm trying to process de step back and reach for my gun because it was terrifying with the hell. Is this and I mean it was just a reflex. Be Reaching for my first first thing defense. Did you hear a knock debate. Announce themselves. No no, not at all. No. The next door neighbor cintos Garcia said that he'd been standing there and all of a sudden several cars appeared. He, said quote. A white car pulled up into my front yard. Right in front of me. One of the men who got out of it pointed a rifle directly at me. I was told to get down and I immediately did. I was five feet from Julian's front porch and door. Without stopping several of the men who had just arrived immediately went up into Julian's front porch and bastion his door. None of the men announced that they were police. no-one knocked on his door. No one waited any period of time for him to come to the door. And then Santos. "Eventual they going from the bottom from the neck, and it's called eventual slot, and they can sort of remove the offending. And sometimes when it comes to the back. They usually have to do some sort of what we call Lebanon to me and go in that way to access the spinal cord with the district itself. Now one thing about x rays, of course, when we read x rays your veterinarian. I'm sure it's talked about some what we call calcified disks interestingly when a dog is exhibiting signs of neurologic dysfunction pain because of a ruptured disc or pretend to rupture disc and the doctor takes the rays in ceased calcified disks, those are probably not the district question that are causing today's problem. They're already calcified they ruptured a little bit in the past. But when you see them as calcified disks, they're old because it takes a long time to calcified. So it's unlikely that a calcified disks is causing yesterday's problem. It came on suddenly, so we looked more for is. We look for certain what we call, narrowing. We look for some space in between the disk spaces. We look at what the norms are. We do discs that are like short of coming together that are very narrow. Then of course, we think this might be the culprits. So these are all things that we kind of have to evaluate. But the key is if your dog, especially that happens more dogs and cats if your dog starts to exhibiting pretty severe sudden pain, you do not want to sit on it. Okay. You definitely something. You want to have your veterinarian see sooner than later. And I again, I can't stress enough that at the time is important because if we have a paralysis, and there's no D pain, these dogs definitely need to be seen fairly immediately. Now, if there it's just Aparicio's they kinda wobbly a little bit. They look like they're drunk. They're they're a tactic. We call that they could be can walk, but they kind of are clumsy, they have depressed CP's conscious proper septic, but they still can't fix. Then. We're looking at a case. Improbably handled medically and for those of the old fashioned way and still I'm old fashioned. I still use steroids. But I guess the newer studies come out are saying that some of the better non-steroidal that are safe for pets. Don't ever go to cabinet and start pulling out of your profile or stuff like that? You gotta talk your veterinarian. But some of the work Justice effectively. Of course, there may be a little safer on the GI tract, and and the high goes steroids. But there are there's medical therapy. The key to medical therapy. In addition to the non royals or struggles, whatever your veterinarian chooses to use strict strict strict, we call cage rest, that's so hard for people to do. But literally put them in a small space, very small space, pick them up to go outside pick them up to this. No unnecessary movement. Is like a doctor saying the patient on the human side. I said here's a choice. You can either jump into bed and don't move for two weeks, or I'll see my surgery table. It's it's very similar. So we got to be very, very careful. And when the doctor says cage rest, they pretty much mean cage rest. It's the difference. Between having a pet that could ever walk again or pet that need surgery versus a pet. That's gonna do just okay. If you follow the instructions so a lot to handle, but if you have animals, if you are breathes, if you have your Frenchies do know that this is a possibility it does happen. It happens fairly often. Unfortunately, many of them can respond to medical therapy, but many of them like my patients the other night actually had to go straight into surgery. So it does happen dachshunds. Keep them lane is one thing. I should add overweight dogs long back. Altered overweight are at much greater predisposition to just disease and disruptor. So when you have those dogs that we know around the list of dogs that seemed to have this problem. Keep them on the lean side that's good for their own. That's better anyway. But it's certainly when it comes to the backs it's for their own health and wellbeing anyway to everybody out there have a wonderful safe fun. New Year's and welcomed. "Guests dot com. Email us at slash guest edgy Millicom. So let's get into the show. What we've been watching this week? I will start I will start with a couple of things first of all while ago. You guys may remember longtime listener and fan, Mike Aparicio donated a significant sum of cash to the podcast, and essentially chided me for wasting my time watching terrible things and said instead of you know, watching documentaries about penis museums. Stuff. I should watch dark on Netflix. And that always stuck with me. And even though it took me many months to actually respond to him. I I finally did it. I finally watched dark season one, Dave. Of injury. And I have been saying very similar things to you know. Episode, by the way. Yeah. Yeah. Sitting there. It's been almost twenty years. We haven't actually given your money. But you know, we do say it a lot. It's true. It's true, which I think like goes to show you the money really does talk. You know, what I mean when it comes to fling? Because because it really I mean, I'm being metaphorical. But like that money was burning a hole in my psyche. I'm like this guy donated money. So that I would watch the show. And I haven't watched the show and every day that passed where I didn't watch the show I felt guilty about it. I I you firefly Dave long before it was on that flicks. And it's still sitting someone your house. It's really you're doing right now. Dave, what am I doing right now, you are manufacturing and Email from the preacher guy? Let me. I will definitely be getting an Email from the preacher guide this week. Yes. Now, why haven't watched preacher yet? But anyway, Gary on this through. Yeah. Anyway, so dark season one. How many of you have actually watched all of dark season one anyone here? Not all of it. Not all of it. No one H E. Have you heard of it? I've heard of it. This is the German series, right? Grote German stranger things, right? Yeah. Yeah. That's our German stranger things. But it's good is how describe it. I think it's dark is is one of the best television experiences. I've ever had. It's just really exceptionally. Well made. Every episode is like impeccably cast impeccably acted impeccably shot has a killer soundtrack. It's a great show. And I really recommend. I now know why Mike Appalachia donated money to get us to watch. It sounds like you own money now that'll bit. Yeah. Kind of you could make that argument. So I would recommend anyone check it out season. Two is coming out in June of twenty nine thousand nine hundred. I would tell you more about the plot except I don't want to give anything away. It's it's best not spilled at all. But I'll just say checks a lot of Dave tens boxes for things that really like museums penis visas, and there's a lot of lot of human and family tragedy going on lot of time. A lot of reflections about the nature of time travel, and and the effects of actions throughout time and space cut the Dave like stuffing. It's face full of popcorns like yeah tragedy. Yeah. Thanks, not interest. That's right. So I strongly recommend dark season. One one of the most. Impressive parts of the show is that they show the same characters at different points in their life. And so you have like a young version of one character in an old version of another of that character, and the they are played by different actors. They didn't do de aging marvel style they have like different actors playing these characters at different points in their lives. And so the casting needs to be really really good to convince you that that's the case. And in general, the casting is in fact, very very good it. It's just like seeing the casting and how they pulled that off alone is really impressive. So I would recommend dark stranger things twin peaks..

They happened near railroad tracks and a time when resent is was the lodge. I mean that stems directly from us fighting and insisting that they try to keep on hill Torino alive. So that he could confess to these murders, and or any other murders that he had committed. But the motion failed. Rick Perry who'd been the governor of Texas in two thousand and was governor when resent was executed signed the death one. This is the same Rick Perry whose current in the Trump administration Peri oversaw more executions than any other governor in US history. And by two thousand and thirteen Texas has become the first state to execute five hundred people since the death penalty was reinstated in the US in the seventies. At that point. There were so many executions. There was one or two executions every week. I just don't think that they wanted to mess with it. And I don't think they wanted to take the time or the energy or the effort to look into it. They wanted him dead. They add the whole world hated him resentatives executed in June two thousand and six how did you feel when you heard, you know, I was devastated. I was absolutely devastated. Oh, yeah. She said the railroad track from the family home is about half a mile. We're on the freight train track. Now. So I'm sorry. I'm just a little frazzled. I just remember that for years after these murders occurred that every time I heard this train whistle go buy it. Just jolted me out of my sleep, just a real painful place to be because if he did do this. How close it is to our neighborhood. How close it is to our home slowed the trains come come through off. They come by very slowly, they they they have to turn their they generally, you know, stopped through downtown or go, very very, slowly, they're long trains or slow trains, and this is where he did a lot of killing. We continued on drive around boughten hills and Delia showed me the house where the murders took place, and this is it right here. On the day of the trial that this gentleman came up to me. And he said my father saw a scrawny Mexican walk walking down the street that day. And I said why didn't he tell somebody? Why didn't he call the police, and he said he was afraid to get involved. So, you know, my brother is anything, but scrawny, so at least we have some eye witness of a possible culprit, you know, and of course, Montigny Noah's thin wiry. Six. "We'll be Odal Beckham. And how the giants move him around. Because if I were the giants I would not line Odell Beckham up over Richard Sherman. Not because I think which is great and can lock down because I think Beckham can put anyone in the spin cycle. But why go to the most the best coverage defender on the team when you can target the weakest, and I think that's if I were Pat Shurmur an hour. The and I were running that offense. I'd say auto Beckham go up against Keller Witherspoon show me what you got. And I think that that's the one thing that that could really really debilitate the forty Niners pretty early and alternatively, I think you look at their deep safety you've got Jimmy ward who's playing deep safety. He's playing safety only because the starting free safety was injured. And so and he's I mean, it's debatable. Whether or not as good as a star. Her, but I could see Odal Beckham getting both deep shots as well as underneath plays and really shredding the forty Niners because that's one area where they're just not very good. Oscar before I let you go. Give me a quick prediction or the giants going to going to actually go into San Francisco and come out with a win. Or are they going to go into San Francisco and come out, you know, threatening to steal the number one pick in the draft away from the raiders, man. I really think that this game's gonna come down to pressure. And I think it's gonna come down to two turnovers. I think if the forty Niners can generate pressure on ally. Manning and make him uncomfortable in the pocket, then they're going to have a leg up and the Niners pass rushers are not anything to be really worried about. I mean, you've got cash Marsh whose scrap-heap pass rusher. And that's about it. You've got the forest Buckner on the inside and to coda Watson. I think if you're looking to watch someone just came back from injury, and he could be the wild card in getting some pressure on Eli manning. But if the Niners get pressure, I think the Niners end up winning this game. And likewise, it Becher can't manufacture pressure on Mullins. I think the Niners when this game. I think even if he does I think call Shanahan is a good enough. Coach at this point to be able to take advantage of some of what the giants are doing. So I think it's going to be close. I think the spread is somewhere near three points. But I do think the Niners eke out a win by field goal. Maybe not more. But I think the Niners do winning at home. All right, Oscar, hey, I really appreciate your taking some time. It's a better rivals podcast in giants fans. "And there was a there has been a lot of gnashing of teeth with the giants over their own rebuild of the offensive line, which which really hasn't gone incredibly, well, obviously, rich Berg is one of the pieces that they let go they simply didn't wanna pay the kind of premium the kind of contract at the forty Niners gave to rich Burg. And obviously he's in his first year, and you cities been struggling is there a feeling in San Francisco that rich Burke was a mistake. I don't think it's that he was a mistake. No because he is an upgrade over Daniel Kilgore who was the center that we had prior to west enrich Berg. So at the point at which is an upgrade and he's a better pass blocker. So far this season a little bit better pass blocker than a run blocker. And he is. Credibly mobile, and he's able to get a couple of blocks. I don't know that Kilgore would have been able to get and he's good on the move. He's gonna kind of targeting players in the move as well. I would say overall he's playing on his good games. He's playing a little above average on his worst games. He's playing a little below average. But he hangs out in that average area. When you look at some of the players the giants are out at center, I would say that they're they're probably about the same and performing in about the same area, you know, above or below average depending, and so I think that you probably made the right move to not pay him a ton of money, if you can get someone to perform at that average level on a much cheaper contracts. Who's your starting center right now is that John Greco or someone else at the moment? It would be Stephen pulley, former LA charger center Greco started. I think five games after John Jala peo- was injured and Greco got moved to right guard in pully gut inserted into the lineup so pull he's been in the lineup. The last two games. Yeah. I think once you start once you start getting rid of players like Eric flowers, and you start reshuffling things I think you start having to put a different filter on the team. But I think overall it's probably a wash, and I would say you probably made the right decision to not pay that money if you can get similar production from someone that you're not paying a whole lot of money too. So let me ask you this in the game. We saw the other night against the raiders. I think the final score that game was in my thirty four to three if I'm not mistaken. Yeah. It was it was a it was one of the Niners highest outputs in the Cal Shanahan era actually tied. I think for third or fourth most points they've scored in Shanahan. So the giants are averaging eighteen point eight points per game. Obviously strolling on fire. Yes. Struggling and the the scary part of that is is roughly half of that just about nine points out of that is coming in the fourth quarter. It's sort of coming in garbage time. If the giants are actually going to look like a Representative offensive football team. Are there are things that they can do against the forty Niners? Are there things? They can take advantage of in against that defense. So against the defense that the absolute weakest part of the forty Niners team right now. Are there coverage defenders not name Richard Sherman? When when you look at the games that they lose it is games where the other side of the forty Niners defense is targeted early often. And really the Niners have made some curious dozens rotating Cornerbacks. But it seems like they've settled on a starting duo of Keller Witherspoon who's a second year player who's who showed some promises rookie year. But it's taken a bit of a step back in your two. And then Sherman on the other side who has done what Richard Sherman is expected to do which is kind of hold down his other side of the field. And while Sherman is certainly not playing. Back at his pro level. He is playing pretty good football. He is the best cornerback on the team. And he's performing at such. So I think one of the ups that will be interesting..

"I'd love to know a little bit more about what's going on with the giants. Because by by the looks of it it looks like your defensive lines actually pretty good against the run. Maybe not necessarily against the past and Bechers not bad defensive coordinator. I mean, you had a couple of really good years Zona. And so I don't know that it's a it's a case of like bad defensive coordinator is the issue with the giants that they're just kind of lacking talent or is Becher not able to maximize the pieces that he's got because alleviate Vernons a pretty good piece. But, but I wonder if it's a talent issue or if it's a scheme issue or if it's a bit of both. Well, I think that that if you look at the giants you have to look at it through the lens of looking specifically at Livia Vernon Vernon entering the season. I think everybody knew he was their best pass rusher. He was the guy who. Had to produce. If the giants were going to have a quality pass rush. And he missed the first five games. So that sort of skewed everything the giants had BJ hill, they had delve and Tomlinson before they traded him to Detroit, they had Damon Harrison alone their frontline and all of those guys are really good run defenders, but not dynamic pass rushers. Vernon was the only guy that they have really commands a double team. I think if I I looked at the stats the other day, and I think that he's only played in three games. But he's I believe already tied for the team lead in pressures in quarterback hits. So in less than half of the games, you see his impact. He's the only guy they have who commands a double team. So the picture changes a little bit with him on the field. So it's kind of the overall numbers, I think are skewed by the fact that he's only played in three games. And I think when it comes to the forty Niners allowing pressure. I think that they are probably average or below average in terms of protecting the quarterback. I think you look at the left tackle position. And Joe Staley is a stalwart at left tackle. He's performing really really well this season and Mike mcglinchey is also performing really well. But he does have lapses in pass protection. He's a much better run blocker than he is a pass blocker. But if there is a weakness on the offensive line, unfortunately, it's really at center. This is someone you're probably familiar with his giants fan of western rich Berg, he was a big free agent signing for the forty Niners. And so far this season. He's not performed in the way that you would expect for the kind of marquee signing that that I think we were getting I thought honestly, we were getting a little bit of value with rich bird because when he was not injured he was playing in a very very high level. And so I thought maybe okay, he just he was injured. And that's why he wasn't playing while the. The kind of year ends and change and he was with New York, but he's not performed super-duper. Well, and so I think if there's a weakness and weak spot on the offensive line. It's going to be along long interior, and it's going to be probably attacking western rich Bergen, and that's the weak part of the line. But I don't know that you could say that the the unequivocally the the giants should get pressure. But at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if they did especially with the player as talented as alleviate Vernon because when you look at other players that were that were talented or very very good rushing the passer, you think of what Aaron Donald did along the interior, and he just destroyed nine or so if I'm I would not be surprised at the giants got pressure. I would also not be surprised if the tackles were able to stonewall Vernon. Since you mentioned a west enrich Burgum..

In the traffic. Stop. I found law. Let it to be to be very truthful to be as candidacy could be didn't wanna speak about the particulars of the incident.
