"We're getting from the chiefs which they've got him his second team and then they've got canedo third but you know he's going to make the roster right but when you look at this roster it's really difficult to try to figure out who's gonna end up. I'm using lashes russia's guy to like okay. how many roughly. How many defensive lineman are they likely to keep how many offensive linemen. And i know there are two people that a lot of people re- like cheese sands are interested in making the roster. Obviously jody fortson. Everybody wants jodie forced into kept on the roster but with the addition of noah gray it you would think it moved hard but at the same time they generally would have like four tight ends in. Who else is it going to be. If if it's going to be kelsey and blake bell noah gray and they're gonna have a tight end. Who is that person going to be. Maybe it's gonna be jodi fortson. And then there's the antonio calloway situation which i i think he's really interested interesting but is hurt now correct. Yeah yeah they actually just waved him with injury designated. So i i think david ended that experiment even though he was the most like recently proven productive player of that whole. It's just a bunch of pasta at wide receiver. Right throwing them all at the wall and seeing what sticks. Calloway looks like he could have stuck. But that bone bruise kept him out for for long time. So yeah i. It seems like chief moved on there to get down to the roster limit of eighty five players that was due Last tuesday we'll see another five cuts before next tuesday so that should become clearer. The picture in the next week is there. Anybody that you think is going be a surprise cut. It happens every year. A young guy comes up not necessarily with the chiefs. But i always remember that bernard pollard cut and everybody lost their minds. Remember when that happened there were no. I think one of those people but is there anybody that you think is going to be a surprise that like i think it would have to be something like crazy like they cut one thornhill because they loved yvonne key right like something weird like that but. I don't think that's going to happen. What what was your take on that. I don't think there's going to be a cut at that level. Like a like thornhill suddenly just cast aside. You know i. I think armani. Watts could lose his job key. I think doreen oh daniels days are done here. Even though he's a former third round pick. Andy was picked by each you know. He wasn't a holdover from john. Dorsey leading that front office. I think maybe the biggest surprise and people could disagree with me in a. What do i know but i think cornell powell could endanger of not making the roster even after the chiefs just took him in the fifth round when you have a deep team day. Three picks face a significant challenge to make the roster and You know you mentioned. Jody fortson earlier to me carrying a third and fourth tight end when they are more. Receivers like ford senate gray. I don't think you have to keep as many wide receivers. I think those guys are kind of that hybrid..

"We got some clarity today with antonio calloway's released if you went by what we saw in training camp up until saturday you would say that's marcus kemp's job checkmark done. That's the wide receiver depth chart but all of a sudden. You had a couple of extra guys getting some reps in this game and leading the team in receiving and maybe there's a competition that we haven't thought about maybe somebody is going to be on the bubble in a positive way now. Jerry fountain led the team in. All receiving categories was heavily targeted by both hannie and gordon. And honestly all three backup quarterbacks. So yeah he. He showed off some abilities. Kind of a bigger your body type. He he got a a back shoulder passi see. He positioned himself while not one. So was good. To see that margaret's camp had a tough catch over the middle to just didn't get as many opportunities as fountain. But i think marcus soda. A good game for what he does and he was on first special teams which is always something to imp important to note at this stage. You know whoever's on that first wave of special teams and it's hard to see from the broadcasting will kinda just see who ran down there on that kickoff but Yeah i i think i think campus still has it has a stronghold on that last receiver spot. Cornell powell is a guy that you just have to kind of assume no matter how he's looking no matter how many opportunities he gets not gonna cut him this year. You know not going to cut a fifth round pick. You know his first year. So he's efforts. Or steve or so it really is all these guys fighting for a sixth spot if they keep six receivers which i think they will and so yeah kemp i think is still has a strong hold on it but guy like derek shepherd who's played in the nfl before he's played for the packers he's got some juices or return or two. He didn't get much time on saturday. But there is a there is a healthy competition for camp right now. And i didn't even mention garrick deeter but that's a whole nother story. I i think he's I wouldn't i. I'm not going to bet on him. Not making the practice squad But i just i. I'd like to see other receivers kinda get opportunity over him. So we're adding fountain shepherd both to the bobble in a positive way. These are players that we hadn't talked much about prior to now but both have very different abilities. Everybody know that look like wing. Bow out there with a number eighty two on the and again being returner and versatile player listening experience. You know the returner field is going to be crowded with us in the coal and others but shepherd is a guy that has enough ability to make the roster just as a returner even if he's not used as a as a receiver as much so all of those guys are probably in the conversation. Now from marcus kempson presumed six wide receiver job. I do think six. I guess dealers can never be counted out for whatever reason so. Keep an eye on that battle as we go forward. There's definitely some options there as you can see we learned a little bit this But there's still a lot of things that are unanswered. A lot of things up for debate. I guess athletes on and frustrating about preseason football training camp football incomes against the chiefs. "Eventually you're going to have a two week period between the last of the preseason and week one to really practice with the guys you have on the team so this is a good time to test those younger guys out that you might think have a certain skill or just wanna see them around the first team defense you wanna kinda see them and set a plane with a bunch of guys that are going to make the team you know have them play around good players and then see how they fit in as as someone that may not make the team and see if they can prove themselves at all so yeah i think i think it's a good. It's a smart thing for the team to do to kinda just Make sure they're getting all the looks they can at all these guys the exceptions that might be the offensive line where continuity is so important. They've really been pretty stable and how they've assigned those reps for the most part but other parts of the team especially like the defensive backfield Running backs receivers. They're just rotating those guys it all kinds of different ways with different combinations. Because you're right. You don't know their responsibilities on every single play if you're trying to get film on a guy if he's at corner and he's playing with a safety who never gives the never gets the right position or doesn't give the right amount of help. That corner is gonna look much worse than otherwise would so by rotating you can see maybe isolate which one of them is doing what he's supposed to do in which one is maybe a hampering his teammates ability. Yeah and i think that especially makes sense for the defensive back position right. If you're a corner or safety you know. Let's say you're a corner that you know in the preseason games. You're you're playing with the third team safety so he's not helping you over the top as much as maybe a tire and matthew or a sorenson would so yeah. I think defensive backs. That's why we're seeing so much different rotation and like you kind of mentioned andy. Reid did explicitly say. Don't look into the fact that you know like a one taken a third team snaps on on monday As as i freak out about an in the dm stags you can attest to. I didn't freak out. i guess i just. It is notable and and a lot of people on twitter. we're taking note of it but Like like we're talking about here. There's not much to take away from that but we'll get into thornhill later to the about time that you react to it then you see him on. The first team began so it is really because there's nothing else to talk about. It is notable at least at the time. And you want to think okay. Did the way somebody played in the game affect how they're seen by the team in this week coming up and maybe there are some players that performed well in the first preseason game that are gonna get some more snaps. They're going to get some more run. They want to get a better. Look at them We do see for the first time the legion. Something a little different this year and the weather setting the roster cut deadlines so today was the deadline to cut down from ninety two eighty five players. Then next week they'll take another five off before getting to the the final initial fifty three man roster on the thirty first of the month so those transactions were analysis morning any big surprises or takeaways off of that list run while the only significant name in my opinion is antonio calloway who was injured the they waived him with an injury designation. I believe and he had that bone bruise which you know. Bone bruise sound pretty painful. It's not something that he can't come back for him. But you know it probably is something that just hurt his chances to show off in training camp and guys like marcus kemp stepped up and and look to to kind of take control of that sixth receiver spot although there's other guys fighting for it as well so just about availability and you know at at some point you know. The chiefs have good receivers. You know they they need to probably start thinking about a little more special teams ability With the guys are gonna keep and calloway did not bring that. So y- significant can make the rosser would have been an exception to the rule as as a fifth or sixth wide receiver. You assume it's a special teams player. You assume it's a a rookie or are young player. At least and we thought he had a chance early on just because he's got some proven. Nfl ability. he's he's put some tape out there in previous seasoned that that show that he can do the job and so he was an intriguing player early on but right when he got hurt. You know that's about the same time the other players other young receiver started emerging and. We've noted at that time as really bad timing for him. It really could affect his ability to make the roster and ensure appears to be the case. They did releasing with an injury designation which means he'll revert to i are already reports out there. That when that happens they'll have an injury settlement and he'll be off the roster and free to sign somewhere else when he's healthy so tony calloway does not appear to be in the team's plans this season The other names also some injured players but many patterson defense back was in Undrafted free agent this season chad williams wide receiver. Evan bela's tight end and allies mcguire. Running back was actually put on. Irr so the rest of them were released or released with an injury. designation mcguire was put on injured reserve. Now which if you know the rules of the rosser set up if you put someone on. I r during the regular season or after the initial roster cuts after the fifty-three then they can return from. I are in a in a short number of weeks now but if you put something out i are now. They're on art for the whole season. So mcguire season is over but he may get another chance with the chiefs next year if they if they decided to keep going on. I r the whole season. That's the only other notable the way they structure those transactions is the other guys are probably pretty much chiefs. career is over the move on to other places. Mcguire may be a guy that's going to set out this year and then have a chance to make the next year. Yeah he's he's stuck around has any a few years He's been around this team so it's probably just one of those things where you know. They like him familiarity in in training camp. Guys that can eat snaps and know the offense. So yeah he'll he'll stick around I want to say before we move on. I just thought it was funny. Chad williams and and his only opportunity. I think he did get another catch but has only opportunity. The other opportunity. On on saturday he was opened on the sideline route and anthony. Gordon i believe just throw it right at his feet and you can see the frustration because when you're when you're in his position as chad williams man you don't get a lot of reps lots of opportunities to catch the ball and make a play and show a team that you know you can make the roster so i i could see why he'd be a lot of very frustrated about that but that just stuck out to me that that was really the only chance he got and and now he's not on the team will that goes back to what we were just talking about. With the way they're rotating different personnel groups and players on different levels. Maybe a guy like that would get opportunities with you. Know the first team or the second team just so that you can see when given opportunity when the back puts the ball. Were supposed to be that they have a good shot at it and we saw that with some of the the wide receivers in saturday's game and the way that the rotating around camp Today's well yes. Yes so we'll move on and start talking about the game a little more. We'll start out with the snap counts well first of all chiefs one nineteen sixteen as that obviously matters. Shame came in the clutch and and won the game. Forma last minute but No preseason week one. Obviously we're gonna talk about the stuff we can kinda react to you. Know seeing them for the first time live game and we'll go into their snap counts a little bit because i do think it is interesting. "Come back at some point but also that as a right guard. It just aren't gonna see your hear. His name called very much in the regular season. Which is good for an offense lineman but all the hype in camp all these one on one victory than all these clips of him dominating might just a fade away. once they're an actual games. Were watching more. People are watching the ball unless less watching the line. No that's a really good point stags. That's a very good point. I'm glad you brought it up. Because there is a difference you know you see acquitted nelson in the league. Guys highlight block on all the time. You know pancakes and teabag and dudes after the block and you know there's a reason he was top overall pick is because he can do all that while also play to play just being super consistent and everything you see those highlights from trey smith but obviously he wasn't a top five. Pick for a certain reason you know those consistency things are a lot more important than the highlight stuff. And so you're right. I think there's there's true to that the fact that we are seeing a lot of his best plays and you know people aren't going to post in about when he got you know i did see journey. Beat him real. Quick and a run. Play when i was there last week and i think i mentioned that in the pod last week but he's got to have his his ups and downs. It's just you know it's the ceiling. And the coaches kind of believing. It sounds like at least that they believe that they can get him to that point where he is more consistent and his highlights are just part of his game and it's not just highlight one play and then a very low light. The next the coaches believing in his teammates seem to believe in him. His teammates seem to rave about him too. And and and honestly here hearing from is really. What kind of helps me out a little bit too. I mean you can just tell. The dude loves to play. Football loves the the act of violence and football and just wants to do everything he can to be the best football player. And you don't always get that that vibe from every player you here in in in press conferences and everything. So that's good to hear. And but i do i. I'm glad he threw a little cold water on. I think it's important. I think we saw a little excited to get a guy. This with these highlight reel plays around. I mean if it was a second round pick. I don't know how much of a story is issue. You know. I think it's just you know. Hey second round pick. He's looking pretty good. But since it's a sixth round pick i think we're all just freaking out about how another highway robbery of breadth visas to to you know put on the resume and we are desperate for offensive line's success and it is exciting to think about the fact that the chiefs may now have a full starting five that they can put together for the next four years or more and be really really solid so as all positives and again i don't mean to be the The wet blanket in the situation. But i i just think that it's it's a fun camp story and it's gonna be awesome to see how he performs in the regular season. It just might not be as big of a story by game six than it is right now onto something. That is a big story right now. Reportedly the steelers have james washington a wide receiver who requested the trade So sports betting. I five on twitter asks. Should the chiefs reach out about trading. Maybe he could fill in. What's lost from sammy. Watkins what do you think about making trades for james washington. I think it's a little unnecessary to be honest with you. Because i think i would honestly say calloway and james washington are probably very similar players. You know i think james washington just is obviously not gotten in trouble off the field and stayed on the field for the steelers. Hasn't got as much opportunity as calloway did back when he was in cleveland. But i think it's a little redundant i don. I don't think you know if you wanna guy games washington. You have them here in antonio calloway and he may not even make the team. So i kind of just shows you that they do have a good group receivers even if they're not you know nationwide note know pringle and robinson they're not going to be known as as nation guys nationally that are big contributors or anything but they have a role in this team. They know to do on this team. You know i i. I think that's a little more valuable than than bring in a guy hasn't been with the team and and and isn't as much you know is just as that level town. He's not like the super talented player. My opinion so i think it's a little redundant. I don't think we need them. The might be another case of. Why would the steelers want to trade under the chiefs They fancy themselves as a competitor in this in the afc. And a why would they trade the chiefs another receiver that to help them contend you know and to make up what's loss from sammy watkins. I did write a piece about how sammy watkins. His role on the team was important. But maybe not as big as we make it out to be and maybe they have piece together. An awful lot of bodies that are that are performing pretty well. So far in camp i th. I think the team is probably fairly content even if whether we are or not Is obviously irrelevant. But i i would guess if the team is not pursuing that trade nor are they pursuing a trade for the the corner out of jacksonville henderson. Who who's also reportedly on the block. I i do think the henderson thing is is worth keeping an eye on just because you know he's he's a he's a young first round cornerback and the cap will be you know he was the ninth overall picks so he the cap. It's definitely going to be cheaper anything but this is what does man i mean. Beach beach goes after these sorts of things. You know if he's really disgruntled and jacksonville really can't move him if he can get if you can send off the fourth fifth. Sixth round pick forum. Beachell do it. The chiefs are still dealing with several injuries ahead of the game on saturday night including one to defensive end frank clark who left thursdays practice with what the team is calling a hamstring issue. "Rest because you know there is still a delicate recovery. Going from an you know. Broken leg that he suffered last year. And so i guess there are still you know limitations to to plan him a little bit but he was rotated with my cues in my eyes when i was at practice looking at stuff him in him and the undertaker mike user switching pretty evenly at that third cornerback position in the nickel defense. And so i'm surprised to see him behind guys like chris. Lamb and bo keys. I know the sa- funky part about the unofficial depth charges on keys are on different lines and baker. So it's you know it's hard to tell exactly what their order is but glamorizes listen to the second cornerback in bakersville third cornerback. I mean that's just you'd think they'd be switched around i if it was. They felt strong enough about baker. So it is interesting for sure but i do think there is some. There's some lingering injury recovery to that. Maybe that that might be dealing with that. We've seen it by the fact that he was given a few days off practice. I don't think there's any risks that baker doesn't make the team. I feel like he's in the plans. And depending on how they see the defensive back room whether you keep five corners or six corners or four safeties or five safety's That's an open question. But if you look at the safety depth chart maybe the does this give a little bit more. Ch- more clarity to that. We've got superintendent matthew as the starters with thornhill on the second team which is a little bit of a maybe a minor surprise If coming into camp and then devon key problem the the undrafted story of camp so far on the second team as well ahead of will parks and armani. Watts were sitting on the third team. And maybe on the roster bobble as well. So what about the safety depth chart here the surprise you will man. The devon key must be really impressing to play over veterans parks armani watts. I know parks in first year player in kansas city. But watts has been here man he he should and i know he's been hurt throughout the offseason. So that probably is factoring in a little bit as well but man you know. That's that's really impressive for key to to be at that spot already and getting run with the first team at times as well getting subbed in for tire matthews role at strong safety and so if if the chiefs dookie For safety's which you know. I think it'll be between four and five safety that they keep depending on how many cornerbacks they wanna keep and hey you wanna be deep at cornerback. So if you keep six that makes sense and then you're only keeping four safeties and that would result in. Parks are watts being off the team but even if they keep five and one of them's got to be off the team so right now guests parks between the two. I didn't really see parks. Do anything in practice. He hasn't really been running with any of the first or second teams. And so yeah. I think i think key is solidified himself as at ford safety even over watts. I think it's almost set in stone. And that's really cool. The chiefs strike. You know we don't. We don't know much about him yet but sure seemed like achieves sub yet again found another an drafted. It's going to contribute to this defense at some point down the road at minimum. He seems like he's got the mental side of the game down and he's versus whole enough to play multiple spots on that defense and of course be an impact special teams player. That's all you're looking for their out of that role. And so if he seems to be checking all the boxes and doing everything right good for him. Good for devotees. Making making a splash and likely making this roster. What about it. At wide receiver wide receiver. Depth chart was a little bit interesting here as well. No big surprises at the top. Obviously hill mccoll hartman. Who's having a great training camp so far at the top of the list then after them. You've got br byron pringle damarcus robinson and then and then you've got a guy who's really making a name for himself once again in markets kim There's some injuries with guys like antonio calloway maybe sliding down the depth chart and cornell powell looking pretty buried on there any any big takeaways from wide receiver roommate. The there's a crowd group there. Yeah so i think powell being still. He's right under marcus robinson in the second receiver slot. I think that's actually surprising to me. Because he really hasn't gotten any kind of run with the first team really. I mean some of the second team but it's really been all third team action for power and training camp From what i've seen and kemp marcus camp as you just mentioned is the one that's really been shining as that fifth or sixth receiver with the first team. You know making a lot of plays. He made a ton of great catches over cam toe tapping catches catches in traffic long touchdowns man he he looks the part and it's actually funny because in two thousand nineteen. He was having a very similar training. Camp i remember that was my first year covering the chiefs al. I didn't get what we're missing with camp. I mean he. He looked like a straight up a legit receiver he just got hurt in that preseason and didn't get another chance but now he's getting that second chance and i think he's i think you know we. We heard our friend. Nate taylor of the athletic sharpen. Sharpie him in on the roster. Basically marcus cam. I think that's fair. Because i think he's played enough. He's made enough. Plays this this training camp to where he is at fifth or sixth receiver and he has to be the six. Because you're not cutting cornell powell right so Yeah i i think i think pretty much solidified himself at six and and callaway. I think injury really screwed him. I don't know if he's going to be able to to make up for you know enough time to make this team. By the end of august we talked previously about the lower levels of the wide receiver. Depth chart you typically reserved for elite special teams players so marcus campus traditionally been the the mold for the fifth or sixth wide receiver. I made the case previous thought antonio. Calloway had a chance to round out the receiver group. Even though he wasn't a key special teams player just because of his ability is proven ability on the field on offense but yeah if he's not on the field and campus is blowing everybody away That could decide that competition. You know it could already be decided when you mentioned cornell pal to me it sort of depends on how you read this chart. I don't know if you're looking at it right now. Run but you've got Hardman robinson camp left to right and then fountain and then it goes sorta to a second line as if they ran out of room for wide receivers. So is paul really second team on this list or is he the fifth receiver on that particular list as a little bit hard to tell again. I will probably over analyzing something. That doesn't make any difference as soon as next week. But paul has been very quiet. He does fit. You know kind of a niche on this team. But i'm not sure that he's carving out that big role for himself. So if you look at the rookies so far Big surprises might be devon key. And maybe even josh canedo ahead of schedule and maybe not ahead of schedule. Colonel powell might be one of the guys. That's a little bit behind schedule from what we had hoped in his development. But we can't him yet. Yeah we know absolutely not but isn't it kind of funny cornell. Powell seems to be the only rookie that that hasn't really have this. This long trail of flames and hype behind him. You know every other rookie is you know bolton's even making a lot of plays in camp. We've talked about key. you know. Obviously no gray. Who will get to. It's just funny. I i you know i think at the drafters. There's a lot of people really excited about powell. And he's probably the one rookie the only rookie. "Back here on the had pride editor show the kansas city chiefs as we've been saying all show long have released their first unofficial depth chart of the season as of august eighth. How does this work in their game released. So there's a game on saturday night. Seven thirty pm chiefs forty niners. Preseason game ahead of the game in the game release. They released this depth chart. And let's be clear here. This is not an official step chart. It says on it unofficial. We don't know exactly how it's made. We know that team has to approve it in some sort of way. But andy. Reid is not sitting down. This is what i want to explain. Andy reid is not sitting down there revealing his official depth now. I know that there is some kind of approval process with the team. But let's just keep that in mind as we go through this. I still think there are some things to take away. So let's start with the offensive line here and we'll go through one to five left to right your first team offensive. Line orlando brown joe. Cini creed humphry trey smith lucas. Kneeing backing them up. Mike remers nick. Grady austin blyth laurent. Dna tardiff andrew. Wylie now here is the backups. To the backups prince takeover. no-go brian whitman. Daryl williams yes. You're durant wyatt miller. And then all by himself in the fourth column is injured. Kyle long. I think what is telling here is religious. The right tackle position as we've been saying it. It is interesting. Even though mike remers has been injured he started campus. The right tackle. He was getting all the i team snaps. And now it's lucas neang over. Remers that to me is the only thing that really jumps out anything else. Jump out to you john. Well and that remers is the backup to left tackle now which given his performance in the super bowl Which many people would never like to see again that kind of surprises me but again it's unofficial You know i could see andrew wylie being a swing tackle for either side I had been playing second team right. Tackle yeah ad campaign noted how important that was for for him to get those reps because he feels to guard. He's he's going to be this utility super utility man for the chiefs if they do wind up keeping him the reason he is not in the left tackle position is because he's just playing their camp and i think they wanted to put mike remers in the second column and that's the only spot that really is open in. Assuming there's all these other guys are playing those positions that can make allegheny by the way has been taking snaps at camp. If that's something that interests you. I guess it's worth noting here but to me. That was the only thing that that jumped out. Let's go to the tight end. Travis kelsey the lakeville and then noah gray and then jodi. Fortson is over evan bayless. That's exactly what we've seen at camp right. I don't think noah gray is going to start the year as the tight end to. He's been a little bit better at blocking than i thought he would be. And so. I wonder how soon that takes like bell might be the best blocking tight end on the team travis. Kelsey is not a bad blocker. But i think bill is your blocking tighter. Yeah that's probably right. I mean noah gray had some some star power for the first few days of training ham. But we heard his name as much Since just hasn't been as loud as i. Yeah yeah. I don't know if maybe he's been a little bit banged up because he looked very explosive at the beginning of training camp and little bit less so and rookies are always going to try to push through so who knows. We don't really know what's going on and there's usually listed for you know that but it. He has been much quieter as campus. Gone on. and and i'll return to the point. We were discussing last week The possibility that cheese could keep four. I with you. Then that they're they're more likely to keep three because they've got other places where they need to have extra players but You know then again. They've invested a lot in jodi forts and he seems to be doing really well. So we'll see how this plays morton looks fantastic. And he has looked fantastic in pads. Dave toe released a major nugget that he gained twenty pounds of muscle and his conversion to tight. End that to me makes it a little bit different than seeing this. Which we've seen before. And then he's been kutcher so i'm coming around to the idea that the chiefs keep four tight ends on again. That's that's going to mess with your guy darned thompson. 'cause you gotta make room in some or an offensive lineman you know offense now right. That is another school of thought in the kyle long thing because if you do kyle long back and you throw them on the list. And maybe if you're trying to keep ten offensive lineman you can keep nine at least to start. And then you have your tenth one waiting in the wings. And i do believe that they are going to keep durant and daryl williams on the practice squad so you you're gonna end up having a good amount of depth at those positions all right. Yeah and i think one oh goes a a wild card in this too. Because they have always said that they've liked him a lot yes and they may want to figure out some way to hang onto him too. So there's a lot. There's a lot of variables to juggle their right. Let's move onto wide receiver on one side. So the one wide receiver position they have. I think they ideally want a bigger receiver there. We know what to marcus. Robinson is no offense to the fourth rounder. I think the chiefs have gotten the absolute most out of the marcus. Robinson talks about ceilings. I think the ceiling is super high for cornell pow and when it comes to byron pringle. We don't even really know with his ceiling. Is all we know when it comes to byron pringle as that when he's on the field when he gets a target when he has the ball in his hands he's been successful it's been a plus for the chiefs. Can he take that next step. Now that he's we think going to be getting the opportunities with sammy watkins out of the picture during training camp. Sammy watkins usually was healthy during training camp. So he was taking. A lot of the rap is a baltimore. Raven is completely gone now so now it is finally going to be that true wide open. Competition can byron pringle. Or i think darkhorse in cornell pal or if you wanna go dark horse at antonio calloway take advantage and make a case. Okay i'm going to be that fourth target for you again. The targets go kelsey and hill. Something clyde edwards allaire. Then this position for me who is going to be getting those targets when it comes to your fourth option on this offense even darker horse Jody fortson or joe fortson. "And we'll see more of the andre baker but you know it who knows how it could play out it can be very interesting to watch and training camp. Now cornerback is not my number two battle to watch. But i appreciate the offering only because if you look at this roster and you look at the step chart you have one player at the corner back room. That is locked in until hit what his position is going to be. And that's try various ford on the outside so like we know. The jerry needs to play significant role. But we don't really know what that role is writing. And they're still figuring that out and so that's where it becomes an interesting training camp battle to watch. Because i truly think and stemming from your point about you know this is something. They're working through as mike hughes fit in the mix how does rishaad fence and fit in the next areas. Need a guy on the outside. And he's just going to focus on snead island and not go into the slot where he is at one of the positions players at the position as cornerback in the nfl. If you're doing that then suddenly you have advanced. Trust in someone. Like a mike. Us like a rashad fenton. How does andre baker fit in. That mix does this jerry. Steed ended up staying in the slot. Because you're like you know what baker in ward are good on the outside and for charity ward who to a to an extent is an average to an maybe a slightly above average player for him to be the only player locked in at a certain position. Yes that does make the battle. Very much intriguing. Four chiefs training camp by number two position. Because i love offense offense guy wide receiver to. I'm just curious as to who is going to be. The sammy watkins. I i think she know what to marcus. Robinson is and i think that somebody who was a role player for this team. If someone gets injured and i think it's gonna be a battle between the rookie and cornell pal. I think byron pringles also going to be in that mix. I had mentioned antonio calloway as a dark horse there. Marcus camp before that injury. They said we're playing the best football of his career. Who knows it could go a lot of different ways. And i think by extension and i've said this before we sort of know pal. The rookies to be on the team. We know it's going to be robinson and hardman and hill and pringle the reason. I didn't mention hardman in that because i just don't think he fits into that size and weight. I know he's been getting some buzz as the sammy watkins guy but i i'm not buying it. I'm not doing whatever i will say. Is we know those five right. We know those. Whose number six is there a number seven. We've mentioned on the podcast before it doesn't mean one last running back and then all of a sudden you have a seventh wide receiver. It's just very very intriguing position for the first time in a while for me. A heading into cheeks training camp. I think right. I think it's about the number six. And maybe the number seven player and it makes you wonder whether a guy like gary deeter is even going to be able to hang onto a job in the practice squad With but that brings up the thing that we've mentioned before that you know. He is somebody that they might like to have on the practice squad specifically because of the way he practices in the fulfil role that they see on other teams sometimes really well. I think it's easy for us to forget that the practice squad is first and foremost the practice squad. These guys that you need in order to run your practices the way you want to. It's not necessarily about replacing guys who were injured at cetera. although that's certainly part of it but But you make it makes you wonder Whether dealers gonna have a chance to stay with the team this year because of that battle for the sixth or seventh wide receiver. Because there's gonna be some guys they're going to want to hang onto even if they don't make the fifty three and you know what i'm looking at the roster as we speak here perfect time to joe fortson now or never man. This is because he's been this big target and and it's it's i think believe it's thirty year trying trying for this and i know that he does last off season high pointing balls than so want a deep position to the cheese for fifteen or saves usually. This is the running back position this year. The clown car is receiver. John you're number one position battle the watch chiefs training camp well. I think it's the the number one bottle everybody's watching the offensive line specifically the right side of the offensive line. I thought that. What ron cop and matt stagner did last week on how to structure was was great. You know talking about what if we went all rookies on the right side of the line. What are the all on the right side of the line. Obviously that's not going to happen. I don't think there's a circumstance where it's all veterans on one side are all rookies on one side. But it's a way to have that discussion and put those things in their proper context. You know whether you want to give these rookies time early in their careers and evaluate them. Know exactly what you've got one at times. It comes time to renew their contracts. Or do you want to to do the smart thing for this season. Only which is to put those veterans out there and that's the argument that they're having internally about these players but at the end of the day it's still gonna come down to you. Know which rookie can we fit in there and risk know which position can. We not afford to put a rookie. That's going to be fascinating to see how that plays out..

Let's protect patrick mahomes. Let's make sure that he has time to get to these weapons. Let's make sure that the chiefs can can score it will. And then if you're scoring a will defense becomes a lot more easier because you have turned the opposing team and to very much one dimensional and you could pin your ears back chased the quarterback and so on and so forth and so the greatest defense. It's gonna be reversed cliche but sometimes the greatest defense. This year's or i should say this ages. Nfl is a really really good offense. And so yeah. Maybe they didn't devote as many of their resources to the edge position. That offense could be as good as it was in two thousand eighteen. And if it is it. Changes the entire game even for the defensive side of the football. So we'll see how this plays out all right john. What's your number two position battle to watch. Well i think to me. It's cornerback Just because again. There's a lot of of interlocking pieces here I thought Steve spagnolo is comments about The cornerback battle the last time he spoke to us. We're very interesting. One point he said you know the guy who breaks through. That is if there's a guy who breaks through with these young players care fraud and that yeah I thought that was very interesting because You know we've talked about this before he. He really puts his heart on his sleeve and he tells us what he's thinking. That's something i really appreciate about. Steve spagnolo that says to me that they're not quite certain how this is going to play out but they feel like they have enough talented players that they can make it. Work somehow So i think that gives the edge to players like trevor ward for shod fenton and these guys who have done pretty well on the system and obviously luxurious need and my personal belief is that They're not going to feel okay. With some of these guys like mike hughes and deandra baker by the time this season begins. So we'll see a lot of stuff like spag all talked about in philadelphia where you've got this guy. That in some situations is a slot corner in other situations outside corner. I think we'll see that. At the beginning of the season and then as the season progresses or in players are injured will start to see things change. And we'll see more of the andre baker but you know it who knows how it could play out. It can be very interesting to watch in training camp. Now cornerback is not my number two battle to watch. But i appreciate the offering only because if you look at this roster and you look at the step chart you have one player at the cornerback. Room that is locked in to hit what his position is going to be. And that's areas ford on the outside right so like we know. Legitimate needs to play a significant role. But we don't really know what that role is writing and they're still figuring that out and so that's where it becomes an interesting training camp battle the watch because i truly think and stemming from your point about bagnall this is something they're working through. How does mike use fit in the mix. How does rashad shot. Fencing fit in the next jerry. Sneed guy the outside and he's just going to focus on snead island and not go into the slot where he is that one of the better positions players at the position as assad cornerback in the nfl. If you're doing that then suddenly you have advanced. Trust in someone. Like a mike. Us like a rashad fenton. How does deondraye. Baker fit in that mix jerry. Steed ended up staying in the slot. Because you're like you know what baker and ward are good on the outside and for areas ward who to a to an extent is an average to maybe slightly above average player for him to be the only player locked in at a certain position. Yes that does make the battle very much intriguing. Four chiefs training camp by number two position. Because i love offense offense guy wide receiver to. I'm just curious as to who is going to be the new sammy. Watkins i think the chiefs know what to marcus. Robinson is and i think that is somebody who has a role player for this team. If someone gets injured and i think it's going to be a battle between the rookie and cornell pal. I think byron pringles also going to be in that mix. I had mentioned antonio calloway. A dark corner stair. Marcus can't before that injury. They said we're playing the best football of his career. Who knows it could go a lot of different ways. And i think by extension. I've said this before. We sort of know pow the rookie going to be on the team. We know it's going to be robinson and hardman and hill and pringle the reason. I didn't mention hardman in that because i just don't think he fits into that size and weight. I know he's been getting some buzz as the sammy watkins guy. But i yeah. I'm not buying it. I'm not doing it whatever when i will say. Is we know those five right. We know those. Whose number six is there a number seven. We've mentioned on the podcast before it doesn't mean one less running back and then all of a sudden you have a seventh wide receiver very very intriguing position for the first time in a while for me a heading into training camp. I think you're right. I think it's about the number six. And maybe the number seven player and it makes you wonder whether a guy like gary deeter is even going to be able to hang onto a job in the practice squad With but that brings up the thing that we've i think mentioned before that you know he is somebody that they might like to have on the practice squad specifically because of the way he practices in the fulfil role that they see on other teams sometimes. Really well i think it's easy for us to forget that the practice squad is first and foremost the practice squad. These guys that you need in order to run your practices the way you want to. It's not necessarily About replacing guys. Who were injured at cetera. Although that's certainly part of it but But you may it makes you wonder whether dealers going to have a chance to stay with the team this year because of that battle for the sixth or seventh wide receiver. But a guy who's been a bust eighty-six targets in the last two years since he's been in the league. And then josh gordon who who who just cannot stay on the field and hell. I don't even know how good he is anymore. Right now he. I mean he hasn't even played long enough to even know how good it's been a long time. Eight nine years since he led the nfl in receiving yards. Especially over nikial harry. I understand the kill. Harry is only twenty four years old but he is just not looked like a competent. Nfl wide receiver. The patriots haven't done a lot to help him out but he hasn't been very good in the. Nfl doesn't create separation in any way not interested. I wasn't really that interested in him as a prospect. I am on the josh. Gordon train because i wanna see as many weapons as possible with patrick mahomes. Maybe we believe fifth round wide receiver. Cornell pal is the answer or mccoll's finally going to take a huge step forward on the outside which is out of position for him. But i'd like to see. I'd like to go to training camp and see josh gordon practicing with the chiefs and see what that looks like. Yeah i'm out on josh gordon of you should be i one jock. Laurie hawkins seed. And i hope he latches on somewhere in his super successful. It has nothing but the best moving forward. I just don't think that's going to be chiefs. Calloway and you have antonio calloway already on your roster so i think what they have right now is probably barring some sort of trade or a surprise cut after camp what they're going to have going into the season and that is a little bit concerning because what you're looking at right now as tyreek hill which is great but then mccoll hardman damarcus robinson cornell powell byron pringle and then probably one of marcus camp garrick deeter antonio calloway or daria shepherd. One of those guys probably going to be the final roster spot where the wide receivers that just doesn't inspire a ton of confidence from me. The only guy that i feel good about his tyreek hill and then everybody else is a massive question mark in when i read earlier. This week from nate taylor of the athletes and i quote from the voluntary wait workouts in the teams mandatory minicamp mccoll hardman appears to be in position to have a breakout season as he is expected to have the role previously held by sammy watkins. That's terrifying for me. I i don't think he's a guy that profiles to play in that role sammy. Watkins was a prototypical x. Wide receiver where he can line up. On the line of scrimmage and beat man press coverage that is the opposite of what mccall hardman profiles as in fact the only guy on the team. Maybe you got two of them. That can do that. I think is cornell powell and byron pringle and i don't think those guys are starting level wide receivers at least not right now so i. I don't think they have that guy on the roster today. Listen i. I think as upset before that is something that is being overblown using the words terrified a mike that that feels a pitch strong. That feels a bit strong to use. Sorta josh gordon. And i i hope he hooks up with chip and joanna gaines down in waco. And maybe they can you know do some kind of work with him. Maybe he can help build some houses and work at magnolia farms. I don't i don't particularly well. I think they can help people. I think he got a better chance to his life getting on track them. Come in and play in the national football league. I personally think that mccoll's role on the team should be pretty well established by this point whether it's just a gadget player or a true number two wide receiver or any of that. I don't think matters that much. I think he's a fast guy that can make big plays and that they want to get involved in whatever way they can so they can do that this year and he ends up with you. Know nine hundred yards and eight touchdowns as a largely successful season in this offense. You know in in a sixteen game season. I would've said seven fifty. I'd be happy with so. I think this is a big year for mccoll. Obviously but we shouldn't put our expectations too high that he has to be a thousand yard receiver or Or no deal because more nuance to at the met. Yeah in another point. I think is important is next. Year is fourth year on the deal in his last year so he will have to make that decision in this next summer. Hey do i want to resign right now. Just lock in a long term deal with the chiefs. 'cause maybe depending on his production. Maybe they kinda you know. Hey if he doesn't have that great production but he's still a good player like you're saying let's just lock them in now so he doesn't explode as last year and then we have to go up against the market but he might wanna bet on himself as well he may think is fourth years where it really explodes that kind of thing. It is really interesting to follow a career because he so fast that you want to keep them on the team but you also want to make sure you don't overpay a guy that may not be an actual wide receiver one or two. The list of chiefs receiving targets based on production. Obviously it's hill and kelsey at the top of list. It should be mccoll in third spot and it should be clyde edwards helaire right neck and neck with him or in the fourth position so for the fifth leading receiver on the chiefs. I think you've got four players. Potentially that could earn that job. And i know a lot of people have talked about byron prenatal and how he just needs that opportunity and damarcus robinson somebody who they should rely on less than what they have in the past. But what do you think about who emerges from that group of pringle robinson cornell powell antonio calloway to be the fifth receiving target on the chiefs. I'm not calling him a wide receiver five or wide receiver three. I'm just saying in terms of yards and catches at the end of the season regardless of role. Who's gonna step up in that next spot. Well if we were betting men we'd be betting to margaret robinson right. I think that's a safe bet. I think we've seen demarcus robinson step up and be wide receiver two for the team even if he hasn't been super productive but he can be that guy that relies on he kinda grew up with mahomes in terms of the nfl career. They were he was throwing the homes of throwing into robinson the pre season before he became the star. All that kind of thing i really. This is the biggest con- competition for training camp for. Sure i mean. I can't i ca- i really like all i mean. I don't really like robinson that much as a player anymore. Kind of wish they would. Just you know kind of trusted. Bring oh to step up. But a guy like powell to who knows maybe he can make a big step his rookie year and contribute over guys. Like pringle and robinson that's the thing pows a fifth round pick and we say let's brock's vacations for our fifth round pick but robinson was initially a fourth round pick and pringle was an undrafted free agent. So it's not like you're going. He's going against these uber. Talented guys that. He's he's they're not in the same classes him. They're all kinds of the same talent class a little bit pows just less experience. It is going to be a big competition. And i think it's really between those three that i mentioned calloway want to be fighting for you. Know minimal targets so there's really one guy in that group that has ever had more than five hundred yards in a season and more than five touchdowns this season that is calloway. So that was with the cleveland browns. So you inflate that if you go to a good team and and say that he had booth. Production now robinson's averaged about four fifty a year. Three or four touchdowns byron pringle about one hundred and sixty yards. A year with one touchdown in a pass production calloway's the only one. That's actually done it to the level that we would be excited about. I think if you had your fifth leading receiver on the team go over five hundred yards and five touchdowns you'd say that's good production from that spot. Do you see any of those other guys. Getting up to that level Calloway can get back to that level and you know that is a good point. Because can you see byron pringle getting to five hundred yards five touchdowns that is kind of stretch because he does seem to kinda. Just be a situational player. Maybe someone that isn't dominating a game but we do see him at arrowhead indianapolis two thousand nineteen. When he did have to step up for injured receivers he did have a huge game. So i i'm literally so back and forth on this crazy i can't make i can't make up my mind a little bit. That thing with callaway review him last week and so i'm he's got a fresh on my mind. He's a little redundant of what they get from coal hardman and he's not the same kind of receiver as what they're going to need from byron damarcus or powell. They're all going to be x types. That kinda need to be bigger bodies. Be able to block a little better. Calloway is going to really just be a situational deep threat. And so how much he gets on the field really. I think it will depend on who. They're playing how they want to attack a defense whether it's going to be a deep ball game or or you know how it goes and they already have to kind of do that kind of deep ball stuff. So that's that's the only hang up. I have on. Calloway might be a little redundant where he's not getting a lot of targets to be a wide receiver or you know a target five like we're saying so it's it's really between those three like i said i i think for the fifth role because they're just gonna be on the field more than a callaway could be and i i want to say pringle. He's my guy. But man powell as kind of impressive as a rookie to it is going to be so fun to watch and training camp. I think it's going to be a huge battle. So i think in your piece. You called calloway classic z. Type receiver which would put him. Basically third on the depth chart in that position right so it's hill and then mccoll is hopefully as the you know if he develops so in a way that you hope that he does so. I could see calloway as a game day inactive you know thurdsay receiver or authorized or or on the practice squad with the need for an ex not necessarily a huge body jump ball player but maybe for that blocking aspect. And that's a really underrated. Part of damarcus robinson game. Yes look long games from this team of the last few years. Almost every single highlight road club has robinson downfield blocking somebody almost every single time. and so. maybe that's maybe that alone gives robinson on the field more. Yeah we'll the actually produce. In that time. I think is yet to be seen yet but i do think that's a good point and he's just going to be on the field more and i think that's just who is going to be this. I think it's just whoever is on the field more no matter what you're not going to be being thrown to you know as a featured player with kelsey hill and obviously edwards helaire hopefully taking a step up. So yeah it's gonna be. It's gonna be interesting. I will say pringle is in that same vein. As well and the blocking thing. I think pringle is a good blocker not as many opportunities as robinson howell might be the most physically imposing of the third right so if he develops as a blocker he could see the field a lot and then you know maybe he does flash something that we just haven't seen from privilege robinson feel like pringle and robinson probably our guys that every year. Somebody like this is going to be the year. They just need more snaps. This is going to be the year for them and then you know they. They sort of our they are. I'll take the maybe the unknown. If powell can develop as a blocker and see if he can get on the field and gives him production. Yeah i know there is. I know andy at one point said at one point said receivers a lot of time to get into the offense and stuff as a rookie and stuff so they don't produce maybe right away as well so that's one thing to consider but yeah i think powell's a good pick next question from run. As far as i'm concerned i think they talk about more so just to keep him interesting because he's a big special teamer And then you've got hardman was drafted pretty high. He's lightning fast. But the guy hasn't really learned to run routes yet and i don't think that's going to change. It just doesn't seem like he's going to get it. I think he's gonna be more of a cordeiro patterson type rear where she's just got all the outlet of talent in the world. But he just never clicks the receiver nepal. I mean he's interesting. I looked into them and i drafted him a couple of dynasty leagues. But the guy. I really like is free and every league and that's Antonio calloway nobody knows even on the roster. I mean he's got a first round talent on the field but he's also got jeff or not jeff gordon. Josh gordon talent off the field so so many issues. But if the guy gets it to click and you know andy reid is going to give the due to shot. Because that's just what re does. But i mean i think he's the most talented receiver outside of hill on that roster so if he keeps his stuff together off the field. I like his chances of being somebody who produces and that offense. Maybe it doesn't happen right away but once he entered the spot. I think he's the the best chance to actually be a viable option unless hardman all of a sudden figures to run outs. Yeah people away hours. I remind everyone in calloway's twenty four years old so he's got straightened out. He does his time and he was a pedigree guy me what about a first round pick. It wasn't for for the off the field stuff for sure. And when you pair him with With mahomes you get those other guys around him and didn't he'll and kelsey and There's certainly lots of like there for the price right. I mean you could get them for free right now and you could pay off huge Let let's stay in the afc. Here i want to shift over to the The afc north and talk about the bengals. Backfield's what are your thoughts on on the fantasy value. That can be mined there. Is it simply just joe. You know draft. Joe mixon and forget it or is there somebody else. There should be paid attention to chris. Seven jp p ryan. You know anybody like that in the bengals backfield that you could get after mixing that you think is worthwhile for f. It's not they have not announced yet they have not made that official, but there's just been confirmation from other sources that he is being shopped. So to me, I think Colin Murray is going to be going to the cardinals with the first overall pick. And with this trade the Browns are a serious contender. I mean, just look at this offense Baker Mayfield under center Nick chub behind him. And when cream hunt comes back probably from his suspension, which is probably like six games roughly he'll be back in the lineup. Oda Beckham on one side Jarvis land joined the other you'll LSU teammates Antonio Calloway in the slot. Davis. David Joko at tight end. That's a great lineup right there. That makes Baker Mayfield. Job so much easier. When you have that much talent at the receiver position anti-dam position as well as your running game being strong with with Nick Chubb, who is extremely underrated is one of those in my opinion, one on the top picks in the draft. If you can't control yourself enough to not test positive at the combine and you already had issues at Florida, are you adding him to the list of potential draft busts that very recently include Johnny Mandel for the same reason. And jury's still out on Josh Gordon for the same reason. This is why the Browns are gonna are gonna Brown. Always do when when you make this kind of call from a front office perspective, you're hoping that you can catch value and you believe that the structure within your locker room can can bring a kid like this along and and get him not only right on the field, but off of it as well. But when you have this many red flags and warning signs and you still roll the dice and this happens, you have to point at the front office and go, what the heck were you doing? I mean, that's the key here. When you know this much information about a prospect in a prospect that has had this many issues in his past, and this still happens, you deserve all the criticism that's coming your way. You deserve all the people laughing and shaking their heads and going of the Browns because this is the call that you could have avoided, and this is the call you made anyway. Yeah, you're right. And I remember talking about Calloway back on this show during the combine and wondering which team was likely to be willing to take.
