"Spent in free agency signing various guys that were unexpected but helped fill needs very much so for this giants team that needed improvement especially on the defensive side of the ball in terms of the position group that improved the most. Chris and I both agreed here that the cornerbacks were the most improved for the various obvious signing of James Bradberry from the Carolina Panthers signing for that three year deal joining a young but still talented corner group and then adding that veteran presence which helped really mold out in shape out the remainder of that position group. Yeah yeah hopefully. Bradberry will serve as like a veteran for the giants cornerback group. Take the pressure area. Like we've mentioned before. Take the pressure off of Deandra Baker in Sam Beal Corey Ballantyne Grant Haley. And whoever else happens to wind up in that group but by the time all is said and done hopefully he can be that number one corner who shadows the opposing number one receiver who can play press coverage hopefully force quarterbacks to hold the ball just a little bit longer maybe give the pass rush more time to get there and also help the giants not just hemorrhage big plays on the back end when they have to blitz or when they decide to blitz to dial up more pressure more pass rush bradberry was really the giants biggest signing and really his presence made for the biggest improvement of any of the Of the of any of the position groups yet of adding Bradbury had probably the most impact to any position group which is why we consider them to be the most improved for a period of time. And I think we even said this during those early offseason breakdowns. The cornerback group was not the weakest but one of the weaker position groups just because of the fact that they were they were very young. They didn't have a lot of experience. And that was what was leading to a lot of issues in the secondary overall. So you bring in James Bradberry. He can step in and start and B that number one corner for you. Take a lot of the attention off of the Andre Baker Corey Ballantyne Sam Bill. Whoever else is out there on the field at corner they don't have to guard number one receivers like we saw Baker having to do towards the end of the season and we saw him struggling doing so sue. Bribery can step in. He can immediately start. He can play and have a pretty big impact similar to what we got from Janoris Jenkins in his first year with the giants being able to step in and play in slowdown number one receivers in terms of an honorable mention though in a close runner up. We considered the linebacker group to be not close behind them but right behind them in terms of how much they improved. You talk about getting rid of a clear liability defense INALCO. Gotree was not the same player that he was early on in his career. Not really registering things and moving the same way that he used to be able to get him. Get rid of cream Martin and then you bring in Blake Martinez. Who is an underrated linebacker? Who We talked in full depth on Tuesday about his impact in what he can bring to the table. You've a guy that can step right in. Play Mike Linebacker in help round out that group as soon as they figure out what they're going to be doing it will linebacker. I think that this linebacker group take took a very big step forward as we're talking before before we started recording. The giants got rid of a liability. And edit a viable starter in. This isn't as big of a step forward. Jump as the cornerbacks made with James Bradberry but hopefully Martinez can help with the communication problems. He can hopefully process information more quickly and even though he might not be athlete that Tree was or even is hopefully he can do the mental footwork to put himself in position to make plays rather than watching opposing players. Just run right past him. While he's guarding turf. I kind of brought this during our last show. I don't think his signing precludes the giants from adding another linebacker like you said a will linebacker an athletic guy who can have that who can lockdown that coverage role in the middle. But just having a guy who you hope can be the quarterback of the defense who can communicate who can play chess game with the opposing quarterback who can effectively relay the play. Call from the sideline into the defense communicate with whoever the free safety will be having that guy there. That's that's big for a defense. In terms of what position group did not improve in his now currently the worst on this roster and when we say worst it's not so much that abysmal and they're they're not going to be able to perform but rather one. That still is a need for this team leading into the draft and a clear cut answer for this because of their lack of ability to sign any bigger name available free agents to fix glaring needs. That is the offensive line. They did not sign anyone. Besides Cameron Fleming. Who's been a backup lineman for his entire career? He can step in and playwright tackle if needed but he is probably not the best possible solution. There's nobody out there really available besides if you talk about Jason Peters or Trent Williams but the odds of getting them or pursuing them seem pretty low because there has been not any tied to the giants even considering them so no available. Options made very minimal improvement because of all of that. It's pretty clear that this offensive line group is currently the biggest need heading into the draft yet like you said they don't have a starter in an obvious starter at right tackle at the moment. It seems they're planning for. The center is either Spencer. Poli or hope John. Hello can recover from a ruptured Achilles in time for the season and honestly even both of them were completely healthy. I wouldn't be terribly excited about that plan. We've seen both of those guys. Neither one is really starting caliber center so the offensive line. It has holes at two positions that is just not a good position to be in looking ahead to the season no and there's multiple positions along that line like you said center and right tackle that currently still need players You don't really know. The solution is at that center spot. You don't know for sure if Cameron Fleming will be starting at right tackle or if they're using somebody like Nick Gates. Any of those backup guys. That didn't contribute a ton but did step in last year. You don't know for sure who's going to actually be that right tackle. It's clear though now that come draft time that they're going to have to draft someone. It can't be like last year where they waited until the very end of the draft to take a tackle that is developmental in might not really be able to start right away. They're going to have to take somebody within those first two rounds if they want to address and fix the offense of line do at least take a step forward and improve. It are honorable mention for biggest. Need out of any position. Group was the safety position. The did not really make any significant signings. You can include driven. Ask You Henry in that. They got rid of Antoine Bethesda. So a step backward. You still do obviously have Julian Lavin Gerbil peppers but we did feel that if you get rid of Antoine Bethesda. They should have been bringing in somebody else to join the mix hit it. Exactly the giants don't really have a free safety or at least a free. A free safety that we know will be a good free safety you. We saw Julian love step on the field and play well last year but he stepped on the field and played well in Djibril peppers role. He wasn't really the free safety. That was Antwan Bethesda and he had his issues at free safety most notably the fact that he did he just doesn't have any range left so we don't really know if the giants are going to ask love to transition from that kind of box safety slash slot corner role that he played Give that back to Djibril peppers and then have loved played free safety or will. They leave love where he played. Well possibly keep playing peppers. Close to the line of scrimmage where he has played his best end maybe looked to the draft to find another free safety or we just don't know what's going to happen right now. So it's it's tough to have a lot of confidence in that position when one of the most important positions in your secondary is currently vacant so Chris. Here's a really interesting thought that I had when we were talking about the linebackers and I think it goes in line with this discussion. Because of this specific player you can probably guess who about a pitch deal so maybe the here because they do still need a will linebacker and they're still missing that additional piece at safety. Maybe this is the giants approach to okay. We can't get any of the guys that we want free agency. There's no one really that we see as viable starters and there's a guy that we can get very likely at the fourth overall pick who can play both of these things and we can move around and get creative with him so maybe this is some type of not an intentional set to get. Isaiah Simmons but rather putting themselves in a position if they can't get some of those early guys like Chase Young. They say themselves all right. We have needs at will linebacker. We have needs as an additional safety. Why don't we take Isaiah Simmons or if they don't take Simmons? It opens up the conversation for Jeremy Chin. Or Kyle Duggar more so as a safety but if they want to use them as a rotational sub package linebacker any of those guys could very well be in play because both of those position groups are of need. And just so happens. You have three guys in this year's class that can play those positions yet. I think they are set up to be able to do something like that. It just really depends on whether or not Patrick. Graham is his defense in scheme are set up to run like that. I've been reading a lot about the three three three stacked odd front air raid killer. There it goes by a bunch of different names defended kind of more or less pioneer bio state aspects of. It have been taken up by a bunch of different schools. The New England patriots have been running aspects of it over the last two seasons and getting a guy like Isaiah. Simmons Kyle Duggar Jeremy Chen perhaps even using Djibril peppers in that kind of will linebacker. Box Safety Hybrid. Role is a big part of that defense. Basically it's difficult to explain. In limited time without a whiteboard but it it more or less normalizes the middle linebacker dropping into a deep safety role from the Tampa two and plays it in an odd front. If that makes any sense at all. There's probably a post I'm going to have to do on this time or at the very least in the in the host host for this podcast all link a piece mark. Scofield did on the air a killer but getting one of those athletic hybrid safety linebackers could be a way to run that defense and it can be very very effective against a spread. D A spread offense. I'm going to Amazon prime. You'll whiteboard you can put together a video of breaking this down. So you can fully articulate your thoughts on it but I do agree. It's probably not the easiest thing to explaining podcast where it's only audio people can't really see what you're trying to break down. It's just it's just one of those things that you try to talk about coverages and plays and it's like well you don't know what this looks like..

"Defensively. Surprisingly we have one positive from this game and it makes a lot of sense considering the stat. Line that we were able to see in the run defense by the giants. We saw a number of tackles for losses. The number I believe was five by this defense in stopping the run but in addition to that they were able to keep them under seventy nine rushing yards and that is against the team with two very talented running backs that are used them. mm-hmm affectively in using the run to set up the past so overall great day bye. They're on the run defense and slowing them down. Yeah that was the one one thing that really stood out in a positive way from the giants defense and I will say that's one thing winner. Williams has definitely shown. He excels at is using his quickness. To get through the line of scrimmage and make plays in the running game and when you have somebody like Leonard Williams in Dalvin Alvin Tomlinson Dexter Lawrence. BJ Hill. That is a stout defensive front that is going to be tough to run against once again. We saw the second second week we saw the giants play the off. Tackle runs very well for the most part. They showed really solid gap discipline. They did a good job setting a firm madge just running. Those plays right to the sideline and again for the most part in for most of the game giving the packers running backs just nowhere to go the final part the packers final actual Dr. We did see the run defense. Start to break down Jamal. Williams started to kind of run behind his pads is end a pickup yards after the After contact but for the most part the run defense should be counted as a positive for the giants. I think the goal for James Becher when he was planning this game in this game plan was to eliminate the run game and and try to force Aaron Rodgers to do everything and it was kinda working. It was kind of forcing the packers into these third and longs and I would is assuming that they were going to get off the field but because Aaron Rodgers is such a amazing mazing quarterback and he's been in the League so long he thrives on performing under pressure with guys coming at him being able to skip the pocket finding a receiver because he does all all that so well he was able to convert on these third and five or longer so not much of a surprise to me that they weren't able to stop her and Rogers considering the disparity and talent but I think a huge shadow does have to go to the run defense in the defensive line in not allowing the packers to run the ball effectively which they've done consistently this year they contained off the edges. Very very well did not allow any breaking of contain so they look very very good one thing before we move onto the next part I do. I say the giants were able to do that without stacking the box. Aaron Jones only saw nine percent of his runs this is per. NFL NEXT NEXT GEN stats only nine percent of his runs. Were against nate. Nand box and the giants didn't have a single eight-man box against Jamal Williams. They for the most part were able able to stop the run with seven or six man boxes. Kudos to the defensive front there at least in that regard yeah being able to play that style against the run just shows a commitment to stopping it when you don't have to stack the box but also it makes things kind of questionable because if you're not stacking the box that means that you're probably double using those guys in pass coverage show it. It's a bit mind boggling that they gave up as many first downs in yards in passing touchdowns as they did first negative though that we have and frankly this is one that little bit irked me a bit and I'm sure it did to you as well Chris And we also Janoris Jenkins. It was circulating news that he was running his mouth about not traveling with the best receiver. He was talking negatively about James Becher and while I agree that James Dispatcher is proven he is not the best defensive coordinator. I do not agree whatsoever with generous Jenkins saying that. Did he should be traveling with the best receiver. And then the way that I'm just looking at this is that we've seen Janoris Jenkins play against the best receivers and we've seen him get burt art. In the past two seasons give up huge games to top level receivers. So what makes him qualified to now. All of a sudden be the guy that's traveling and following those guys on every single play. He's fine where he is on the left side of the defense. Stick there and the other thing that I just want to I. I think some people might not be considering. This is that this defense has so many young defensive backs and players on it. Why the heck would you over complicate things with with having changing assignments and having to move people around when they can barely have consistency in getting the right play? Call in being in the right position. I'm sure James Becher is doing that. The keeping things as simple as possible. Not because he doesn't think you're good enough but you clearly generous Jenkins are not good enough to be following the best receiver Ni- right now. He is the giants best cornerback and probably their best secondary player but he is not on Patrick Peterson's level or some of the other guys who are able to match up on the number one receiver especially really if a team has a true number one receiver like Davante Adams guys of that caliber and give their defense a reasonable chance of taking them out of the game and what you brought up with trying to keep the defense simple as simple as possible that right now should be changed measures primary primary goal because we have seen enough just complete Miss Communications. We saw one. I believe it's On the packers final touchdown where the giants had twelve men on the field. Nobody looked sure like they had a clue where to line up if their hands ends. We're going to be on hands. We're going to be on the turf if they were standing up if they were a linebacker in the secondary on the defensive line. Nobody looked like they had a clue what was going on. And the packers Akers just snapped the ball in through the touchdown so keeping things simple. I think that's a big reason why the giants don't blitz all that often than the fact they've I've been really struggling to cover behind their blitzes. I understand veteran players guys who have won being frustrated. This is I think something where Jenkins is probably better off keeping it to himself but I suppose at least we didn't hear him screaming in the locker room like the cowboys did with Michael Bennett. Yeah I don't blame generous Jenkins for being frustrated. I just don't think he is all that talented. And he is a top level corner to be considering considering himself to be a guy that has to be following the number one receiver on the opposing team. I hope that James Measure the reason why that he's keeping keeping him. There is just to try and keep things simple for these young guys would make sense and I just think that's a little bit selfish to be saying things like that when when you have a group of young players that are trying to learn instead. Why don't you be a leader in? Try and help those guys get better. Make sure they're in the right spot instead of worrying about where you want to be on the field. That's my two cents in the you know my rant on the generous Jenkins comments after the game but back to the tape and the things that are very are important is we noticed. A lot of the giants secondary getting beat in zone up the middle. A lot of these plays that the the packers were able to pick up a ton of yards. Ords were updated on things that have been inconsistently but also consistently coming in game by game not every single Game that they allow a lot of passing up the middle of the of the of the defense and they actually ended up giving up two touchdowns there were up the middle of the field so things like that just need to cannot be happening when it continually ends up killing you on defense it. It's kind of distressing really that a few of them have come at the hands of Antoine Bethesda the first touchdown the Longwood two. That stand stood out to me in particular that that was not a complicated route by lazard. He it was a one cut. It was not a double move or an intricate passing concept designed to get receiver lost in coverage buffet ahead. LAZARD INC ORIG-. I believe the giants were playing a cover. Four on that run or on that play lazard was inveighs zone. He had him all he does is run opposed route cutting cutting in slightly and buffet flips his hips the complete opposite direction and acts. Like he's going to run the corner route and then at that point there was just absolutely no way he was going to get back around in time to defend the pass. There were other times. They had holding penalty against him extending a packers drive and that was just distressing to see from a guy who's supposed to be the long tenured veteran in the secondary on the other hand. I gig like what I was able to see from Julian love. Yeah love did look good and I. I saw him playing very very well which we spoke about the quick take show and at the Times. It seems like you were talking about buffet his mistakes. I think that it's apparent at times at the the players on the field. They're not properly executing in zone and they're not in the right position Specifically on that that touchdown to art but in addition to that I just don't understand why the giants continually use zone when it's clearly not working for them and also it's very predictable and any third down situation. I feel like they always come out and zone. If it's third and seven and longer they come out zone in the middle of the field is wide open. There's almost nobody there in the middle of the field to get a handle the ball or contested receiver for making a catch. So I don't understand. Outstanding Becher isn't making decisions to change things up. If if the if the one concept the overall basic concept running zone is not consistently working. You need to switch things up from time to time to at least make things unpredictable. It hasn't worked most of the season I don't understand NY. It's suddenly would start working now against the team. That has a very very good quarterback yet a definition of insanity right there I have no clue either I either. And we saw the giants biting hard on play action. Basically anytime the packers get into a third and long which was most.

giants packers Janoris Jenkins James Becher Leonard Williams Jamal Williams the Times Aaron Rodgers BJ Hill lazard NFL Aaron Jones madge Alvin Tomlinson Dexter Lawrenc Chris And nate LAZARD INC NY.

"The shutdown forecast your avengers of college football podcast. It says in the script onto riff on what that means and basically what I mean is it's all spoiled. Every Tuesday we talk about everything from cooking disasters to pro wrestling. Too unfashionable Pants Warren Middle School. We also do talk about college. Football every now and then like mascot fights announcers fleeing the booth early. And unfashionable pants. That coaches where now if if you want to take college football exactly as seriously as it should be taken. Subscribe for free on Apple podcasts. or in your favorite podcast APP. Hello Listener I'm Sean. Ramos firm host of today explained. Vox Daily News. podcast every day Monday through Friday my team and I look at what's happening in the world. We we pick one essential news story that defines our moment and ask smart people to help us understand it in about twenty minutes or less. It's the perfect way to start her engine. enger day subscribed today explained for free on apple podcasts or in your favorite podcast APP from stitcher and the Vox media podcast network so now defensively the giants were able to hang into this game created some turnovers cause some problems for the Dallas cowboys but but the final quarter despite only being down one they were essentially knocked off their feet in onto their butts as the Dallas cowboys were able to dominate in. Finish that final quarter in complete the game putting up a ton of points to finish out the the one thing though when we talk about positive the negatives there is one obvious positive which I basically already touched. Upon is their ability to force turnovers in the game they were able to force to especially the one that came on. The I play stuff like that is very very good for a defense. That is struggling there are. There's kind of school of thought developing that really the the only way to stop. NFL offense is to take the ball away from them. That's very difficult to do consistently but it is the one sure way to stop an offense you can get a sack and that makes it difficult but offenses are getting better and better at creating. Explosive plays in getting chunk junkyard. Age If you take the ball away. There's nothing the offense can do so the fact that the giants were able to do that and I think the fact that Djibril peppers burst has been generating some turnovers. That is a good sign. Like you said that was pretty much the only good sign from this game but it was there. Yeah it was something that we discussed just about in the preview and then also in the quick take show about how creating turnovers was going to be a deciding factor and it kept them in this game to the point that it was only a one point game up until that fourth quarter door gets blown open. Dallas able to put a ton of points on the board final touchdown defensive one. So you don't really want to count that but still bill. Those final plays in the final quarter came off of or two negatives the first one was something that we saw the whole game. mm-hmm was a lack of of consistent tackling from genus Jenkins who has been an on and off liability in the passing game some games. He's played well some games. He's created turnovers some days. He's been able to lock people down but there are often weeks where he is a liability and we. We saw that in the in the DEF- firmest extent here because he was not able to tackle against a team that is so intent on running the ball downing opposing teams throats. The one that comes to mind specifically as far as his run defense in his run tackling was on a second to play with four minutes in the first quarter where Tony Pollard realized that there was no room for him to run in his original direction of path. So he cut it back. Outside ginormous Jenkins has a chance to tackle him Atlanta scrimmage but is armed tackled because he takes an improper angle and then is kind of stiff armed but easily shrugged off in twenty dollars able to get that first down he had that was just an ugly. Play there when you are the last man on the end like that. You've got to make your stop you've got to wrap up. You have to at least slow the offensive player down long enough for help to get there that something the cowboys did very well with Saquon Barkley and something. The giants didn't do at all really with Ezekiel Elliot. He said after the game that was probably the easiest hundred and forty yards he ever had an a big part of that was because the giants did not tackle well. It was blatantly family. Obvious with generous Jenkins but really all over the defense they were just bad tackling were bad angles and gives just trying to shoulder check or arm tackle and it was at work to one. Play that summed up Jenkins's performance but also like you. You said the overall lack of defensive consistency in being a fundamental tackler. It was summed up on a play that we keep keep seeing all over. Twitter is an attempted tag off by. Jean Blake Darwin as if he thought that this was practice in they were uppers offers and it was just a tag off and get out of the way Blake Charleston ran right through attempted tag and ended up scoring touchdown stuff like that. It's just a lack of effort. It's almost as Ziff. Janoris Jenkins in that play was just like oh I see a guy that is significantly bigger than me running at me. I'm going to sacrifice my teammates and instead try hi to protect myself so we can have some more longevity that kind of looked like an old Dion Sanders business decision. Right there you know. All of a sudden. His cleats got a lot heavier and he just couldn't get over there and time to get in front of him and the matador tackles. Yeah you gotTa do something. If you're ginormous Jenkins because he had add a chance to make a tackle or at least dive at his feet but he had a very very weak attempt something that you would never want to see in the NFL. Someone that they're paying a ton of money it all just continues to get worse on defense in the in the final thing was just the overall lack of awareness and struggles with understanding things on defense and in we get it right now that this is a very young unit. Corey Ballantine was playing in this game. which we haven't seen in? You got got a ton of snaps. De'andre Bakker had a ton of snaps like he always does and also the other rookies that are contributing as well. There were a lot of instances of biting on play action. There are a lot of instances of seeing guys getting washed out in creating wide open rushing leads on zone. Runs the the final thing. That kind of sums everything up. Though his de'andre Baker Allowing Amari Cooper to run free unscathed on a wide open row because he was in the seemingly Lee wrong zone coverage when everyone else was supposed to be a man. Yeah I still have no idea what was going on that. Play too daring Pat Shurmur. I said they were in a zone coverage on that play more or less hinted that Corey Valentine was supposed to pass Randall cobb off and and just hanging zone pass cobbler off too. I believe Michael. Thomas was the safety overtop on this field but on the other side it looked like Janoris Jenkins Kim was in in man coverage it looked like Jibril peppers was in Maine Coverage It looked like Alec tree picked up. Okay I don't remember Tony. Pollard Ezekiel Elliott. But the running back picked him up in man coverage everybody else it looked like they were in two man and the Andrey Baker was the only one who peeled off to cover the flat like you would in just a standard cover too so I am not sure what the play call was and I've I've probably watched that play about a dozen times all Renault's somebody screwed up somewhere I'm wearing I would love to know what the actual play call was menus. Some kind of pattern matching thing going on. Maybe they had they had a hybrid coverage called. I I just don't know. And the one thing I do know is that the communication issues in the secondary need to get cleaned up because they show up every week week and they're a big reason why the giants lead the league in plays over forty yards given up those communication issues seemed to be just like the pass. Protection is seemed to be something that we are always talking about week in and week out. And we're at this halfway point in the season you can only make so many excuses for rookie mistake. Something has to change. Something has to be done differently but one thing you could say though from the poor defensive performances in the factory were past nine games in the season the the one positive thing that I think you kinda come from all this is that we have a better understanding in the coaching staff. and Dave gettleman has a better of understanding of what they need to approach when it comes free agency in the NFL draft in fixing up those holes because there's a lot of young talent. There's a lot of veteran pieces that they can move and get rid of in Trang clerks some cap space but it is very very apparent that they need a new Mike linebacker in they might also you need a safety to replace Antoine Bethesda. I would actually even flip those priorities. I WOULD WANNA get a free safety if they want to keep the just just as a third safety like that dion grant role when he was here yet. Okay just doesn't see the field all that often and but an athletic rangy free safety would make a world of difference for this defense. Merely they can hope that Ryan Conley can come back and be there. Mike Linebacker for the future. I would also want an edge rusher. Maybe a couple offensive tackles immediately true number one receiver ver- especially with Sterling Shepard going through what he's going through. We don't know what his future looks like. This team has needs. It does have have a lot of needs and like I said it is good to finally be able to evaluate those things in it. You know being a sports fan being fan of the giants. If you're taking a look at your team the way that we are I it's it's not great that they're not winning right now but still. There are a lot of bright spots. There are things that can be focused on and also an understanding of what needs to come next in what could potentially be those new pieces going going forward. So the giants might be completely out of contention. Still the free agency and the drafts are going to be a very key point for this this super young team to take that next step yet and I'll just deploy a future show we are going to be addressing that during the bye week. We've got something planned and I think everybody is really going to enjoy it. Yeah hopefully we We do get some some good responses from the type of breakdown. We're going to be giving you guys during the bye week trying to give you a sense of a look at like.

"The leverage that i mean they really really do have the leverage so what bell did is different from what these guys are doing because he had not signed his franchise. Tender sweet wasn't under contract so as zeke elliott melvin. Gordon are doing something different friend what levy on belda we'll see if it works out. I still think that ezekiel elliott is going to get paid. I do believe he's going to get a contract. He will come back melvin gordon man. I don't know i could see him. I'm getting traded and then signing somewhere else to a contract extension in the next couple of weeks as i do not think he's playing for the chargers at this point. I think that things got nasty. Well you're right about the difference between levian bell and what he did and the other guys are doing right now. I think that ezekiel elliott will get paid. There's too much pressure for him not to be paid eight and he has been the best running back in football the last two or three years even better than todd gurley p._s. Me because todd gurley now you have to question his knees and the long term help for him so i. I don't blame these guys for doing it. You know melvin gordon is mr bunch. Games missed the entire season. I believe for the for the charge either in his first the second year. I don't think he missed a whole season. I remember i remember i want to say i think frank reich's last year. There melvin elvin was a rookie and missed a significant portion of the season that running game was completely at the window and if i remember correctly drew <hes> philip rivers threw or attempted attempted four passes that year the year before yeah i don't yeah i know he's had some injuries and last year as i mentioned you missed four games his his first year nah i mean listen. He's last year two thousand fifteen. He started thirteen games twenty sixteen. He started started eleven two thousand seventeen all every game sixteen and last year was twelve so it didn't miss it more than he's. He hasn't played in fewer than eleven games well well. It's not sixteen right yeah so you had five he missed and that one season ended and they also had all sorts of offense of line injuries and problems. They finally get that whole thing and corrected. They also lost her with james by the way i know one of the best safety's not for the year but still the beginning portion of the season he had surgery and that that that that is a humongous loss but they have what everybody desires they have to unbelievable pass rushers joey bosa melvin ingram. That's right so they make everybody any better but you know having that key. Safety in the in the secondary is so important. That's why antoine bethesda was brought here to run. Jane betcha james petras defense for the giants. It's okay he's thirty five years old but as you know if anybody read the story yesterday the stories that have been out there about antoine is that he doesn't look thirty five doesn't play thirty five live and he's a great locker room guy and it was interesting listening to flaherty and mike okay talking yesterday about the chemistry in the locker room and how a buck showalter tore down a team and you know just micro was talking about how buck told him that you know he was watching people getting on and off the plane after you know now games that they may have won or lost to see how guys were reacting to the loss in the wins and it's just about getting the right locker room chemistry and the right people that you want to coach and that you want to pay the giants have been going through this now. The giants under dave gettleman over the last two years are vying roster overhaul right exactly they're trying to. We get the right people in that locker room. That's why they wanted. Daniel jones so bad the more you see daniel jones. The more you realize is the second coming of. Eli and eli has been a great giant. Hi and he's been the face of the franchise has done nothing wrong. Maybe that little helmet dust up for for the most part he has been everything that you want as a franchise quarterback guy that <hes> you know the fans get behind the fans end up loving and supporting him buying season tickets for and.

"Ed. Valentine Big Blue View and today's show is being recorded boarded on Wednesday July thirty first as the giants continue to roll through Training Camp Wednesdays workout was was indoors thanks to expected thunderstorms which didn't hit actually until the very end of practice just in time for Media members like yours truly to have to make a run for it leaving the indoor bubble to try to get back to the media room so you know we think Mother Nature here for that for that little dousing but <hes> you know it's just part of part of doing the job folks part of covering the team and bringing you as much much information as we can about your New York giants and to be honest. We know you don't care about that. I just thought I would throw that out there for you you any way Wednesday's practice for the giants was a little bit of a mixed bag. There were some walk through periods to it some little bit <hes> some periods that were a little bit slower <hes> there was however a pretty spirited end to the practice with some two minute drill work where offense and defense pretty much went full speed and we saw some good play in Enos two sessions from young quarterbacks Daniel Jones and Kyle Lola so both of whom lead Ed touchdown drives in their two minute sessions Lolita finishing his off with a touchdown pass to Reggie white junior and Daniel Jones finishing his off with a touchdown pass to Alonzo Russell ally manning not so successful successful not so fortunate in his two minute drills throwing an interception to to Antoine Bethesda but you know let's not let's let's not Belabor. labor the quarterback stuff. Let's not over analyse every single driving every single throw from training camp of these quarterbacks what I will say about about Daniel Jones. Is that the early part of training camp. He was pretty he was very good. The last couple of days he's been more up and down on his two minute drill. Today was outstanding but prior to that there were some errant throws. There were a couple balls where he hesitated. A little bit got him knocked down or nearly intercepted so Daniel Jones is a work in progress. He shows you plenty of reasons why the giants drafted him. A._M. Sixth overall with some really nice throws especially some deep balls that he's thrown he threw a beautiful beautiful twenty Twenty five yard out today that Split Double Double Coverage to backup tight end Garrett dickerson that also was in two minute drill so so you see some wild throws from him. Some throws that that have to make you excited but what you also see our times when Jones will hold the ball all a little bit too long when he'll get indecisive when he's not quite sure what he sees in those times tend to lead to to bed throws they lead to You too throws that like the one on Tuesday got intercepted by Corey Ballantyne. What I WANNA do today is play. You Guys ace of few clips from the Wednesday media session and as we do that in fact the very first one is actually going going to be Jones discussing that interception on Tuesday by Corey Ballantyne <hes> become me man all all right the next clip that I want to play for. You is one from giants tight ends coach. Lund Wells and this one is going to be in regards to one of the very impressive young players that <hes> that the giants have on their roster currently that would be undrafted free agent. in tight end C._J. Conrad he's a guy that if you've been following along at Big Blue View Dot Com you know that I've been writing about him quite a bit you know that I think he's having an outstanding training camp that I think he has an excellent shot at this point.

"And that's pretty much what they have made their off-season about. They quadruple down on Cornerbacks in the draft swapped out, Landon Collins forge, bro peppers, brought in Antoine Bethesda drafted a new rusher in oceans, as new defensive lineman in Dexter Lawrence, at least with personnel. There has been a ton of turnover yet that seemed to be from Dave gentleman's post-season, a press conference that. That appeared to be where the giants were really going to focus because even like we said, on the, the authentic show west week there were pieces in place. There were things that showed the offense could potentially be good if they fix or change a few things defensive side of the ball was a totally different equation of because we said this a lot during the season when we were doing our, our post game podcast as the reviews we talked about how many times the offense just was kind of lacking because of planning and good play calling but the defense was just a lack of good players. And that's what really hamstrung them last year because you can only do so much when Curtis Riley is your deep safety, and you can quibble with. They are the people responsible for Curtis Riley being that deep safety last year. But that will be the issue this year because we will talk about the, the personnel changes but personnel was a big thing. They seem to have fixed some of that. They have made an effort in some places so we will just get into wear the issues. The giants had that they can possibly control now going into twenty nineteen and the first thing I think we talk about is third down defense. So this is going to be an interesting thing because for a lot of things this is offense and defense into looking for one year to the next third-down is usually, the least predictable from year to year typically on offense and defense. How you are on first and second down translates better to the next year. Then how you are on third down for the giants. Last year, they were pretty decent on first and second down. But they were one of the weeks, worst third down defenses. And I think it's the way they were a bad third-down defense last year, which kind of concerns me a little bit, but also shows a path forward for improvement so per football, outsiders, who attrac- where throws. On third down to our in relation to the first down marker and they call that stat. Alex, which is area arts less of the sticks. It's kind of a not to Smith, one of the most conservative passers in the NFL so purred that stat the giants on defense last year saw fifty percent of throws against them behind the first down marker that was the second highest rate in the week. And usually we've seen football also put out a study that shows that just throwing past the sticks on the third down is good. You get better more consistent results when you do that then when you don't we've talked about that during the giants offense talking about that very often. So the giants face half of their throws fifty percent of throws. They face on third down where behind the sticks, but they were twenty eighth in Devia way on third down and twenty second in conversion rate allowed on. Downs. So teams were just doping. The ball off throwing short of the sticks on third down. But the giants were still allowing conversions at a super high rate that should not have been the case for how often the ball was getting thrown behind the first down line. Yeah. And that's just speaks to poor tackling or players being just very out of position to things we did comment on during the season, especially early in the season. We noticed a lot of Aleka will tree staking out his own and defending that grass the last, but not being so great at picking up the players running through it curse Riley also did that, but he also had a lot of other issues like recognition taking officiant, angles and also tackling with Ogle tree that did improve over the course of the season, especially as giants played some backup quarterbacks who. Did a very good job of leading him to the play with their eyes..

"You know, the nets fantastic if they are not able to do it over the next couple of years, then I'm sure that what you're going to see are different decision makers put in place. I guess that's the other thing we have to talk about or on the next topic. We should get to is the the plan that the giants have that is something that's been greatly debated. Whether the giants have a plan because they seem to be veering back and forth between rebuilding trying to win. Now. Those kinds of things, you know, bringing in young players bringing an older players. Dave Gettleman said last week the plan is to build he got kind of. He got a little. Defensive in talking about it and saying that look he said you can you can win games while you build a roster. That is what he's trying to do. They're trying to win as much as they can now while they build a roster for the future Gettleman has used the phrase trying to set the giants up for sustained success and John Mara spoke about that yesterday as well. He spoke about about the plan. And and you know, he said that of course, the giants would like to make the playoffs. He said the direction from ownership to Dave Gettleman. Pat, Shurmur is build the team not rebuild the team not tear it down make it better. So this is what the giants are trying to do. They're not trying to to tear the thing down and Mira said on Sunday evening. He said he understands that it can be seen as. As conflict are the giants trying to rebuild are they trying to win. Now, he said, basically they're trying to do both. He said we are trying to build a team and still trying to remain as competitive as possible. So it's a two headed thing that they're trying to do some teams do this. You know, some teams go into full tear down mode. The giants have pretty much torn this roster apart. And you know, people question, though, some of the veteran signings that they that they have that they have made over the past couple of years Jonathan Stewart Patrico mama last year even this year bringing in, you know, a thirty five year old safety and Antoine. Bethesda a thirty one year old wide receiver in golden Tate. You know, even Nate soldier with the big contract. Who's a, you know, a seven or eight year veteran a guy who's who's on the who's probably on the back half of his NFL career. I think that what of come to realize what the giants is that they are very very much sold on the idea that having veteran leadership is important. I think that if Gettleman had his way there would be at least one solid veteran leader guy that's played on winning teams. You know, a guy who has been a quality player, you know, for a number of years at his position. I think there would be at least one of those type of players in each position group a golden Tate with the receivers Bethesda with the safeties. There would be one in the cornerback room. Maybe you wanna say generous Jenkins is that guy already. There would be you know, one in the defensive line room. There would be there's Nate soldier with the with the offensive lineman last year. There was Jonathan Stewart with the running backs. I think that the giants believe that those veteran leaders who can help the younger players to learn what the NFL is what it's all about. How to study? How to take care of your body? How to be a pro I think they believe that that is important to building the roster and building the team that they are trying to get to here in the long run again. We'll just there's no answer to whether it's all going to work. We don't know we have to see. And I think that you know, the results will tell us if it works or not if the giants continue to improve in two thousand nineteen if they're winning in two thousand twenty if they have their quarterback of the future, they're happy with the guy that they have he looks like he'll be successful NFL player. Then we'll know that the pieces are in place. And that what the giants are trying to do is working..

"Oh, vilo or Justin Herbert or someone else in the two thousand twenty draft class that that they fall in love with it. We'll have to wait and see, but they're aware of it. They'll figure it out. They'll make that move. I keep saying it's more important that they get it right than get it now. So you know, we'll just see how that all plays out. But I do believe in terms of Gettleman plan that he is trying to build a core that can carry this team forward. He's trying to continue to build the culture, which I think is part of what some of the veteran signings over the less. Couple of years have been about is simply, you know, helping the young guys learn how to be NFL players, you know, helping, you know, having these younger guys see the work ethic and the work habits and the way that some of these veteran guys who have won and been very successful in the league in how they conduct themselves and how they go about their business. You know, all of that, you know, you hope rubs off on the younger players. You hope helps the team going forward, you know, long after those particular players are no longer part of the equation. With with that said, let's talk a little bit about the moves that degenerates have made and one that they might be ready to make as I record this show on Friday morning. The giants on Thursday announced the signing of veteran safety Antoine Bethesda. They also, you know, we found out that they will be signing golden Tate wide receiver who most recently played for for the for the very much hated by giants fans. Philadelphia Eagles, and that they will also be bringing in edge defender, Markus. Golden who played for James Becher in Arizona on a one year more or less a one year. Prove it deal to be honest with you, you know, there's a little bit of consternation from people. We talk about Gettleman plan fact that but they is a thirty five year old guy. The fact that that Tate is a little bit older wide receiver. But, you know, the reality of it is I kinda like these moves the giants also in the in the Beckham trade, they brought in Djibril peppers is very young safety talented guy. But they still if you look at all of the the numbers and his performance over the past couple of years. He's still appears to have a little bit left in the tank. If you if you put peppers and buffet together, they appear to complement each other fairly, well, our own Dan position of big view. We'll be taking a look at both of those guys doing a little bit of film study disc- to to try to look at how they might work together..

"Then they still have loser. They're the biggest loser in the league right now. I think the giants are a laughing stock. No one understands what's going on. No one. No one can tell me. There's a plan since Dave Gettleman has arrived. He is traded snacks Harrison for nothing. Gave away ally. Apple he gave away. Landon Collins literally when he coulda dealt him at the deadline. The Eli manning situation. Manning is set to earn a five million dollars roster bonus on Sunday. They are going to pay you lie every cent of his deal. It's David day. I find me a team that is a bigger loser than the New York. Giants right now in this free agency period. Can't do it can't do it. I mean, they have thirty two million dollars of dead money on their hat. They've brought in. No, I mean, they're they're one signing was Antoine Bethesda who's gonna turn thirty five before this season. What? Loser. A capital bitterly disappointed. Thank you. Jim. Winner. Oakland raiders. Yes. Gruden new GM. Mike Mayock brought in Brown. They gave the richest contract adrit Trent Brown. But he dare to protect Derek guy. I didn't like that guy. They also brought in deep threat. Tyrel Williams are the a winner. There are winner. Because now they can more accurately and adequately. Make a decision on a quarterback. If you want Derek Carr, you can really go. Okay. Now, we have weapons Antonio Brown's phenomenal Terrell Williams is a great vertical threat. I like what they did. I don't like the Trent Brown contract because I don't sign patriots. I just don't want guys who get away from Dante scar Nekia. And then you're the guy who pays him looking at. You Nate soldier? I. I think whether they want a rookie or whether they stay with car, they've at least put themselves in a position to make a decision. And for that reason there are winter. They did a nice job. Welcome back to sports view..
