"So what you're kind of looking at on this map here is sort of the standard democratic victory in california and i think to me. That's the key with this recall. If the recall is going to have any chance of succeeding he could talk about one particular demographic group or turn the big picture thing that has to happen for recall. supporters is. They need lots of people who voted for biden in twenty twenty who voted for newsom in twenty eighteen. Who voted for clinton in two thousand sixteen who typically vote democratic. They need a lot of them to vote for the recall. And so just take a look at this map right here. You see all these. See some red area. I should say the red areas you see on. The typical map and california tend to be rural smaller population areas. The big population centers are the blue areas on the states of for instance. I think this is one interesting way of looking at it. La county there's ten million people in la county right here. This is bigger than new jersey. This is twenty five percent of all the vote in the state of california is going to come out of la county. And if you just add an orange county to the south san diego there and the inland empire san bernardino and riverside. You just look at this sort of block votes here. That's more than half the votes. Statewide is gonna come out of this small pocket right here and again you see. It's all blue right now. So the challenge for recall supporters. Just for instance if you take orange county here you know. Biden won't orange county by nine points over. Trump trump got forty four points. Here if the recall is going to succeed tomorrow. And you're looking at a place like orange county tomorrow night. The number for the recall has got to be like at least sixty percent. It's got to be getting an accounting like orange sixty percent support and you could just look at that. If biden one at fifty three forty four over trump to get to sixty percent a lot of people who voted for biden a lot of democratic voters have got support this thing. So that's the big challenge recall. Supporters have to try to do this in one of the bluest states in the country. Save let me ask you about one. Other dynamic must be hard to model and must be hard to get quantitative about because it's a relatively new phenomenon which is on one side of the ledger. Republican leaders and republican trusted voices and indeed people in conservative media telling those core voters that the elections rigged that their vote will be counted that the system is stacked against them. There was a a lot of questioning at for the georgia senate races following november twenty twenty. There's a lot of questioning whether or not republican voters actually sat home because they had been essentially demoralized about the integrity of democracy because of the way that trump was questioning the presidential election result and a lot of speculation that that contributed to those democrats. Winning those two senate seats in georgia. Is that quantifiable dynamic. Since we're seeing the republicans hit that line so hard heading into the california recall tomorrow. There's a couple of things i mean. We will look tomorrow. We get final results whenever we do get the final results. We'll look and we'll see the core republican areas. How was turn out there relative to the to the to the republican areas. Was there sort of a disparity there. We ended up seeing that when we looked at georgia. One thing. I would say they would. California is unlike georgia. Every voter in the state was automatically registered. Voter was automatically mailed the ballot and they've been mailing them back in now for weeks so there is some question card core. Anti newsom pro recall folks. They already voted before. This latest sort of messaging you're describing started going out there. I think that's one variable but the other variable is if you're looking at polling a month ago and there wasn't a ton of it a month ago but there was a month ago the people across the country political observers. We're getting curious about this race. Because a month ago the recall was within a single digits in the polling there were even a couple of polls that had the recall leading and you could quibble with the methodology and all of them but there was a curiosity piqued when it came to california a month ago and much more recently a look at the polls. I just showed jim minute ago. The polls now almost uniformly showing solid for nuisance surviving so. I think there has been a shift in interest level in this election. It's really worked the democrats favorites against thirty point biden's state this is orange county. I should put the state back to thirty point biden. State's democrats started getting the word out. They started spending money. Started getting media coverage here and it does seem like that. Democratic electorate woke up in the last few weeks. At least that's what the polling is suggesting to us which is which is the gigantic astros. Jiang's over our heads damocles everyday. Now steve kornacki. Msnbc's political correspondent. Steve as always wonderful to have you on nights like this. Thank you so much all right much more to get to tonight. Stay with us. It.

"We're heading into one of those weekends. That itself is going to be sort of a busy news weekend with a twenty year commemorations of the nine eleven attacks tomorrow. Those will extend through the weekend but then very early next week. It's election day in the great state of california. Voters will head to the polls on tuesday to decide whether or not they're going to recall california's democratic governor gavin newsom. Now if you haven't been following this election closely if you're wondering why gavin newsom facing a recall. The answer is california because california and it's infinite wisdom allows for the recall of governor for no reason at all and at the drop of a hat. California law allows you to hold a recall election for governor if you can manage to get enough signatures to equal twelve percent of the voting population from the last election for governor. You don't need twelve percent of the voters in the state you need twelve percent of the number of people who actually voted in the last election for governor which is not very many people state of forty million right. It is very easy to force a recall election in california. And so why not. It's we've got governor. Arnold schwarzenegger in california. It's now how republicans are hoping to get another republican in there now. This time there are a bazillion people running to try to replace governor new some almost all of the top candidates are republicans the anti newsom candidate with the most support is right wing radio talk show host. Who's already making bogus claims of election fraud. Before the first election day votes have been cast. He's already saying that if he doesn't win. The election must be fraudulent. Does that sound familiar in terms of what to expect on tuesday. There hasn't actually been a lot of polling on the race but the polling that we do have suggest governor new some might be on to survive this thing five thirty. It's been compiling all the best polling so far in the race and you can see here over time moving from left to right just last month. Voters were pretty evenly split on whether they wanted to keep or remove governor. Some keep his blue remove his red But since then the keep governor newsom office vote has opened up nearly fifteen point lead but again that is all going gonna come up very fast. We're gonna have a very busy news weekend and then very early the next week tuesday. We're going to have that big race. Watch this space all right before we go just a quick reminder that tomorrow morning. msnbc we'll have special coverage to mark twenty years since the terrorist attacks of september eleventh. Two thousand and one our special coverage begins at five. Am eastern time live from ground zero new york city. We're gonna bring you those visits as they happen again with live special coverage all day long. That's gonna do it for me as of nail though. We'll.

"Shot all the time because my lucky charm a woman with a handful of screen credits at a whole lot of hollywood billboards promoting herself adult film star. Mary carey was talking about her agenda for some people swim and some aerobics. I personally recommend having sex at least once a day. The man did this fairly the people more than anyone is. Gray davis this is why needs to be recalled and this is why i all right so that was the eventual winner. Arnold schwarzenegger republicans celebrity with no government experience. Instead leaned on his fame and personal wealth. He up serving two terms as governor of california. You've never seen a gubernatorial recall election california until two thousand three and now we're about to have the second. This time i think the stakes are much much higher. We'll talk about what they are and the realistic possibility. It conservative radio talk show. Host could become california's next governor coming up all sorted last year february. Twenty twenty before. California went into lockdown for cova critics of democratic governor gavin newsom injuries to petition to have him recalled and they listed all sorts of grievances things like high taxes and homelessness and rationing water. Use and the thing is recall petitions like these are pretty common in california but almost never successful and at first it looked as though this whole thing was just gonna fizzle out then in november last year. You might remember these pictures surfacing. They showed governor some celebrating. The birthday of a prominent lobbyist at a high end napa valley restaurant without maths or social distancing inside while california was basically shut down which was not a great look at all in the month following that dinner. The recall effort gained about four hundred thousand signatures. The movement started a cobble together kind of unlikely. Collision anti newsom republicans california's frustrated with pandemic lockdowns. Ultimately the recall effort ended up with one point seven million signatures which was a fraction of course voters in the largest state the union but more than enough to get on the ballot. So now the recall is underway. The election is set for september fourteenth. Forty six candidates are on the ballot to replace news including caitlyn jenner formed olympian and keeping up with the kardashians star who left the campaign trail earlier this year to appear on the reality show big brother australia. John cox republican who lost to newsom head-to-head by more than twenty points back in two thousand eighteen he toward the state of alive. Kodiak bear to publicity this time around. And then there's this guy. Larry elder he's a longtime right wing. Radio host in california and believes the minimum wage be zero called roe versus wade one of the worst decisions in supreme court history and is currently the frontrunner to replace governor. Newsom is the head of the largest state in the country and because of this bizarre process the guy who won the governorship by nearly three million votes could end up with forty nine point nine percent of the state supporting him and still lose to whomever gets a small plurality among the forty six people running replace him as the architect president brock obama's two successful runs for white house. He's now a resident of the great state of california where he has a front row seat to all the so. I wanna start david with just how utterly insane the structure of this processes which i really cannot be stated enough you get one point seven million signatures which is not easy to get right. You're you're there's some kind of you know it's on easy thing but you get them and then there's a recall vote then if you recall. There's no it's just. Whoever wins a plurality like you replace them you can win. Twenty percent of the vote in a low trout election and become the next governor in california quite. Well i chris. They paid for the So you know. This has been a well funded for by republican domes. Listen there's a lot of states. I think it's up to twenty states that have recall. I personally don't like the recall says anywhere because you know giving us some upper reelection next year so you don't like the job is direct. That's your opportunity to replace but this has really now becoming the last two weeks of elder race any income. I don't care how popular you'll does not want to run in any election where it solely a referendum and now this is becoming shorts and so i do think the more that voters see his news another that's definitely gonna crew unto gavin I'd say california's about sixty five percent fully back same way in talking to the newsom campaign they believe seventy eight percent so are the of the actual voters in this recall are going to be vaccinated but what i find fascinating. Is this going to be the first time that we really had a major election. Where vaccinations and masks gotta how. We've handled the pandemic in posttax nation. Year is on the ballot. And i think nuisance gain steam in the last couple of weeks of because of that you so polls in florida today showing as grossly underwater on basically every measure. So i think this is going to be an interesting question. Does the vaccinate become kind of powerful voter group of themselves. The larry elder elder. I i was on a show on. He's like a. I don't know like a replacement level like radio host. I guess is how i would describe him like it's just indistinguishable from a lot of that stuff. I mean i just think people need to understand like we ran the experiment with donald trump where we took the guy who's got takes and calls into fox news and was on a reality show and we're like do some governing amidst and incredibly fraught period and then we got a pandemic to rerun that with larry elder just seems like obviously catastrophic to me although. Maybe i'm missing something. This is the world's sixth largest economy. So listen larry. Elder is no. Arnold schwarzenegger and california's also changed a lot in his teen years. It's become much more progressive. So yeah the more that this is seen in the closing weeks here as a nuisance elder rates that is definitely going to better than us and the other thing. I'd say chris. Everybody in california is a registered voter has been mailed a ballot already so they're legitimate concerns about who's got more intensity around turn it and there's no doubt automative intensity of against newsom of but i think the fact that everybody's gotta balance the fact that this has turned into a new scenario race and the fact that this is really a question for those close to eighty percent of the people who are gonna vote. You've been vaccinated. You wanna turn the keys over to someone. Like larry elder is that on day one he get rid of the mass mandated. School would clearly be a disaster on every front and so the more. The stakes are raised in this election. I went to tribu what what would happen here. That this is not funded games This could be catastrophic. I think that will really creative uses death. What do you think. Democrats have learned from this process so far about why newsom is in this.
