The counting thie 2020 vote on WCBS presidential races, depending on the results of five states, and they are Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin. Those five states have a combined four million votes that still need to be counted four million votes, and that could make all the difference. But almost 400,000 still yet to be counted. Then do the same thing in Michigan, Okay? Number in 80% 1.1 million still to be counted and I'll give you one more for good measure. Look at Pennsylvania only 75% counted 1.79. So that's the story. We're still waiting for Elections officials to tally up everything that we know has been counted out of Michigan. President Trump has the lead. About 30,000 votes, but there are hundreds of thousands of absentee ballots still not counted. CBS News correspondent Jenna Champollion is in that battleground state, Michigan governor and secretary of State are assuring us that every vote will be counted right now. Several 100,000 votes in the state are outstanding. That is very crucial for Joe Biden because many of them come from right here in the Detroit area, and they're believed to be Democratic votes, something that could flip this state blue. The Michigan Secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, told CNN last hour. At a much more complete picture of the state's results should be out by the end of the day.

"A new CBS News poll finds former Vice President Joe Biden up by six points in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. It was these two states in 2016 that put Donald Trump over the top and security is victory over Hillary Clinton. CBS News elections and surveys director Anthony Salvato broke down the numbers with face the nation host Margaret Brennan. It's concern about the president's handling of Cove it that is outweighing any edge he might have on handling the economy only unpacked out a little bit. Still seems to be some goodwill towards the president is handling of the economy for voters looking back at how the economy wass before the outbreak, specifically things like manufacturing jobs in these states, they say, returning rather than leaving. That was a key campaign promise. But When you look at the way the president has such negative ratings on handling Cove, it specifically parents concerned that their kids are going back to school that the schools I don't want to reopen fully. They feel like the administration is pressuring for that feeling like the administration is not doing enough to compact the virus, and then that is more closely associated with vote than any views on the economy. You see specifically the feeling that Joe Biden would do a better job handling the outbreak and then the feeling that Joe Biden is more attuned to the needs and concerns of a lot of these voters. So Biden's swinging a lot of voters, independents who voted for Donald Trump the last time And when you look at what's changed since 2016 which you mentioned well, Donald Trump won these states based on a lot of voters who were looking for change when they look back. Now they tell us this is not necessarily what they expected. In fact, more say that things have gone worse. Then things have gone better, and that's kind of your classic vote in calculus and play right now, Margaret And since we expect former Vice President Joe Biden to announce his running mate sometime this week, our battle ground tracker also surveyed how important that decision is to voters. Any voters 38% in Pennsylvania and 44% in Wisconsin, said binds Choice for vice president is important to them. It is even more so, for those who say they're currently not voting for Biden but could consider him That CBS face the nation host Margaret Brennan, speaking with CBS News elections and surveys director Anthony Salvato WCBS news time 18 time now for traffic.

But because you you cannot accommodate for all these new. Well, when did you figure that out just now? So all of a sudden, we have no idea if our polls are right. We have no idea about Missouri, or for we have no idea because so many people may vote so many more people. We we we have we don't know, we don't know. Norfolk. Don't misunderstand. These people have known that the Democrats winning now since eight o'clock for the last nine months of what's happened to that. No word from the national keep. Take a look at.

"Kennedy's final days before the midterm elections. There are polls everywhere why are there? So many does the news media. Rely too much on them are Steve Scott spoke with CBS news, director of elections and surveys. Anthony salvato. Why do you think there's been such an attraction to the news media to report on polls? I think that often we see a number, and it's a quick story. It's it's often you can think that that number tells you the whole story, but oftentimes it doesn't oftentimes you want to go beyond that horse race beyond a single number and try to get a larger understanding of what people are doing or thinking. Let's let's go right after in two thousand sixteen a lot of people said to me. Well, you know, we we some people thought Hillary Clinton was sure to win was going to win. What happened in the polls? I said, well if you just looked at the. Horserace Hillary Clinton marginally up in at least nationally, maybe he thought that. But look beyond those numbers. And what you saw was a lot of Republicans in the polls. They were telling us that at the time they were a little bit on the fence they were reticent to support then candidate Trump will they were still conservatives, and they were still Republicans, and they weren't really considering Hillary Clinton. Should we have been surprised that ultimately they came home to their party's candidate? Well, I assert that. No. We should not have been surprised. That's one example that I mean interview looking beyond the horse race. Do you give me on that top line? And you see the kinds of people who are in play the kinds of people who are considering one candidate or another. And when you see that range of possibilities. You're certainly less surprised by what happens in elections, or what happens in in public opinion. You could here are full. "Twenty and early voting ends today. Midterm election day is next Tuesday. Anthony Salvato is on the KRLD Newsline is the CBS news director of elections and surveys. I think it's gonna be a late night for us say, you know, we're gonna see I think as we get towards the west get a better indication of which party can get the house majority the best estimates that I have have the Democrats may be just over that to eighteen team. But there's a big margin of error on that. And I think that you know, there's there's a scenario in which the Republicans the house, partly it's as we get west to see if they can hang on to some of those districts, both where you are in Texas and also out in California. Also, if we talk about turnout, you just mentioned Mitch this record turn out in the in the early, you know, if that's an early indicator of what happens on election day is it going to be very different than if that is in fact, just all the people voting right now early and then Alex. Day turnout is lower past elections were the early turnout was big on the democratic side, but Republicans showed up on election day, and that turned the tables people start to reading these tea leaves are not really vote. They look at partisan registration in the in the early vote numbers. Registered as a democrat or independent or a Republican that doesn't mean, that's the way you vote. We've got districts from coast to coast that are in play that are being contested. We've got a record number of women running this year. That's gonna be an interesting dynamic as a director of elections and surveys. What are you seeing as the hot topics? The president has put a big push on the immigration issue as opposed to necessarily the tax cut or the economy. Because immigration is a T a issue for Republicans. And what that tells you I think is that they see this as a base turnout election, less than a persuasion election. So, you know, you're going after issues that are very important that Republican base. Trying to motivate those voters and just outnumber the Democrats at the polls Democrats on their side pushing health care, and that's because the poll on your show that they have an advantage on that issue. And so that's what they think they're voters and turn them out. And again, you know, the the persuasion election, I think would have been talking about the economy, right? I mean. A party in power. Would normally by the fact that we've got near record numbers of people saying that they think the economy is good for very high numbers heading into a midterm. You know, that might have been the focus or that went between people who think the economy is good and people say that they're still concerned about the direction of the country. Still don't like what's happening in Washington. I think those are the things splits that you wanna see one. Watching turns out what what's on people's mind, we get those exit polls back we see which one that is that probably tell you the story and again early voting continues until seven o'clock tonight in our area and election day is next Tuesday and keep it right here on election night on KRLD for the very latest on the results as they come in not just on Texas races. But on some of the major campaigns across the country. It's twelve twenty four now at KRLD..
