Karine Jean-Pierre: The History-Making Lesbian on Biden's Staff
"Is so much being said right now about the incoming administrations communication seem to also celebrate. Especially on this podcast. Is that two of the seven names that been announced so far are queer. Airspeed towbar and corinne jean pierre. We're going to have to queer women of color in the white house and leadership positions acting as the face and voice of our government. It's wild that think about and for that reason. I wanted to bring you this interview. That i did with corinne that originally aired on a luminary app. We spoke almost exactly a year ago. When corinn's book moving forward was first published. The message of book is that all of us no matter what you might think of as a typical background or story for politician. All of us have a police in politics. If corinne jean-pierre a queer woman of color who immigrated to the us as a kid can make it in politics. She says so can you. When we spoke corinne was also appearing as a political analyst on nbc and msnbc. So you'll hear talk about that. As well as what she learned working for a wide wide wide array of politicians including john edwards anthony weiner and of course resident barack obama from the advocate magazine and partnership glad. I'm jeffrey masters. And this is lgbtq. And here's shop. Thank you for having me. Of course excited thank you. Let's jump in right that your story is not the typical political story. You're immigrant you're a woman or one of color you're a and that is not what we typically see in politics. Yeah and yet. I think it's easy to soon. That's changing with high profile examples. Like alexandria ocasio cortez omar and yet. Those are very much outliers right. Yes nor it is the norm and and like you were saying. I walk in so many different communities if you will like i present so many different communities and that was one of the parts of writing this book i wanted to. I think people get really afraid when a here politics and getting into politics or getting involved and so that's one part of it and they think the other part of it is that people always ask me even young people. They ask me all the time. I teach at columbia university. So i have young people taking my class yearly. And they say how did you get here. How did you get into the white house. Like how did you work in politics and get a different presidentials. So the purpose of the book is also to show. There's not one path and also as a person of color gay person a woman an immigrant. I wanted to show people who are all. Those things are one of those things like. Hey you know she did it. I can do it too. So i lay that out in a very detailed way. You know as an immigrant. I grew up being told. Oh you're going to be one of those three professions doctor lawyer or engineer. And that's i think anybody who's listening in. I grew up in an immigrant. Family could understand that and that didn't work out. I talk about that in the book. And then i talk about. I didn't get into politics until my mid twenties. And so but you're right. there's representation matters and there's not a lot of representation. Even now there are like aol see as you just mentioned others kind of outliers. It's still a very small percentage of women of color of people from different identities that are more diverse that's in the political arena. So the hope is that can encourage inspire people to not be afraid of the word politics And to just get involved because the way you make change is if you get involved you're yourself and you know watching tv even though you don't mention being gay every time it is a part. It is no secret nearly no. I've been out for a long long time. Yeah and i think that's something that is easy to see about you. Bring that up because i. I think there's a tension between you bring. Being gay does not need to come up in every conversations right. Yeah and yet. I think it so powerful to know that there is escape on tv. Like i also want you to for. He never really. I'm so glad you brought that up. Because i think about that sometimes because i'm like i'm out. It's not hard to know that. I'm that i'm out. I talk about my daughter. I talk about my partner in interviews. And it's out there but i don't lead with that you know it's like it's part of my multiple identities. I have multiple identities at so. It's a very interesting kind of way to be in the space and it's actually kind of funny when people are like. I didn't know you were gay. And i'm like how do you not know i'm gay. I've been out for a long time the like. Wow and so it's just. It's funny. But i am aware of it. I am conscious of it. I want to respect all of said all of the communities i represent in. Were you to bring it up every episode out. Say like oh my god. She brings every time he was like. What's wrong receiver. Don't bring up at like one like she didn't bring yeah. It's like you. Yeah yeah it's over. I don't know how people like majority of people feel about it. But i i just want to lead with my experience and kind of my smart. There's a reason at this table and everything else just complements me.

"A respite for Anthony Weiner. Have Weiner is is back in the news. Why because he's back on the streets. Anthony Weiner is a Freeman all my guys my guys the man that basically put Donald Trump into office. Honestly because if it wasn't for him. Right Komi, what had to send that letter to congress saying what what what we found emails on Hillary Clinton. Basically saved the presidency. But he's Anthony Weiner. And I we gotta talk about this. Okay. So basically it was released from federal prison. Okay. In Massachusetts after serving fifteen months for sixty two fifteen year old girl. But then he had to spend several months in a re entry center in the Bronx. So the disgraced former New York lawmaker who actually I think also tried to go for mayor has left the halfway house in the Bronx. He told reporters glad we get back with his family. Yes. At multiple sex scandals pantley, he loves taking pictures of self. But. They're Li his contract to the attention of law enforcement officials is graphic and obscene language to ask the teen to show her naked body and touch himself. According to prosecutors can't fifteen year old girl, we know was designated a level one six of vendor by judge that month. That's the lowest level he will have to register for twenty years, but will only have to give an approximate address where he lives now that he's out of prison. The former congressman most recently for mayor in two thousand thirteen did receive five percent of the vote when the sixteen allegations surfaced who then voted for him. That kind of doesn't make a lot of sets. So really quickly here. What do the different levels of sex offenders level? One is the least I guess serious. And from what I've seen here. Now, this is coming from talk to you about what he has to deal with New York, but in terms of definitions of sex offender, this comes from King County sexual assault resource center, and how they defined a level one sex offender who are the lowest risk for re-offence. They are individuals that normally have not exhibit predatory type characteristics. They have an he though has but most have successfully participated are participating in sex offender programs. Many for seven years. They say you could call on about a specific individual suspect. They might be a sex offender, but the law does not mandate community community notification. So what is the level two sex offender, those be considered a level two sex offender because of the nature of the crimes? Lifestyle. Drugs and alcohol. Use other criminal activity may influence their potential to affect. So let's say Anthony Weiner, if he doesn't drugs and alcohol stuff like that. He might be less likely to be as impulsive. Yet. Somebody who is having trouble rehabbing from that would probably be put it a level to these individuals often more than one victim and our took advantage of a position of trust or thirty such as a teacher coach clergy or babysitter. So a lot more of an intent. And I'm not seeing what Anthony Weiner did was not as bad. Okay. You know, the state classified him as a level one. But if you're having trouble understanding the difference when you're a teacher coach these kids are trapped. You know, clergy. Your you feel emboldened to that person babysitter? And they don't have a lot of opportunity to. Say no. Whereas this even though technically he is it was wrong. This was a girl on on Facebook or or Twitter or whatever that engaged with them. She could leave at any time. So that's kind of the difference there. And then if you're a level three six offender, you pose a very high risks re-offend. Within the community at large that prior sex crime convictions other criminal convictions predator characteristics. They may seek out victims unknown right to the offender of these individuals may have used violence and crime. These individuals may have refused or failed to complete proof sex offender treatment program, so according to Washington law. Yeah, it looks like he would fall under a level one. So now with New York what does that mean for him? So Anthony Weiner is out. Okay. So. By the way, the sex offender registration act took place back in nineteen ninety six that has been a lot of changes, but I guess sex offender laws and statutes been a more recent thing in terms of okay? If you did this you need to register. So anyone who was on parole or probation or rated for sex offence since nineteen ninety six register as a sex offender in the New York state division of criminal Justice services and offenders convicted of a sex offense on after that date or send us to probation local jailers state prison after their date thus register upon returning to the community. Any offender who has moved to New York from another state has to register within ten days. So if you're a sex offender from Iowa or Illinois, and you decide to live to New York, you have ten days, they also have the three levels one two three as general the sentencing court determine offenders risk level, which is what they did. With weiner. And they said what an of course, rated offender set to be released into the community the vote of sex offenders will evaluate the case and provide a risk level recommendations of court, the court will hold of risk level hearing and assign a level, and there are three designations that may also be assigned to the sex offender, you could be called a sexual predator. A sexually violent offender or a predicate sex offender. So there's even some labels you could get so what is a sexual predator. So sexual predators offender has been convicted of sexually violent offense as defined by their sexual once correction law. They suffer from a mental abnormality or personality disorder that makes him or her likely to engage in predatory sexually violent offenses. And just one time is enough to do it. So you start asking a minor to touch themselves for you. That's that's all it takes. You know, what is a sexually violent offender. Well, that's somebody was been convicted of a sexually violent offense as defined. So that could also be assault. What is the predicates sex offender somebody who has been out? They don't go into detail convicted of a sex offense, the offender has been previously convicted of a sex offence alike repeater now how long do you stay on the registry twenty years. So what we know is late forties or fifties. Yeah. So he's gonna be there for a while. Yet other if you are a violent offender sexual predators. Some may also registered for life. And then what are the offenders have to do? So they have to report annually where they live by signing returning an annual verication verification form, they have to notify the department in writing of new address they have to have current photographs taken. I'm sure to get his autograph on Twitter. I saw this is a funny. If they decide to go back to school or work or whatever they have to provide writing their internet service providers. Internet screen names. And address, verification, etc. They have to report employment, if your level to level, three, etc. So. People can move. You know, if you're a sex offender. Can you work as a school bus driver? Most no. Yeah. They have a lot of other breakdowns of this. Which is interesting. But it's it's sad. You know? I mean, he obviously has an illness. And hopefully, he's overcome that. And I, you know, an attraction to young girls is not allowed, and.

"Weiner is on the loose. They let him out of prison today. Well, they let them out of of. I don't even know if it was it wasn't a wasn't even a prison. It was kind of one of those club fed type places. And now he's going to some sort of transitional in other words, halfway house. And everybody's wondering where is Andrew Weiner. Anthony weiner. I'm sorry. Where's Anthony Weiner? What what neighborhood is the on? Is he living in you probably move back to Queen somewhere. He'll be fine. There. They'll have to notify well if it's a halfway house. I don't know what they do. He is a registered sex offender. So I don't know if they have to oh, you probably go on the Megan's lists thing. See where he lives. Oh, man. Do you think that guy's cured? He spent fifteen months in prison. Fifteen months. I gotta tell you. There's something wrong with him. Now, I know the difference between him and bazo is that bazo was shopping his photos with his legal legal age girlfriend where Anthony Weiner was shopping his with under a with an underage girl. But aren't they of the same mindset? Aren't they? And then it's coming down to where bazo girlfriend was showing the photos to all her friends, sending them to all her girlfriends. I'm telling you, there's I don't know why my life is too simple. I need need to step it up. Somehow this way too simple. Byron York trimed in on this whole McCabe interview as well. "Anthony Weiner is out of jail halfway house or something holding. I don't know what it is. Just a picture of him on TV. Ten to one. It gets himself in trouble again, just a dirt bag. I'm not so sure you can remove the he went into jail what November twenty seventeen so he's been in a year and a half or whatever it's been. So I'm not so sure you can. Uh? Remove dirt bag in a year and a half in jail. So anyway, Jimmy cracked corn. I don't care. Some happened to me yesterday that. You ever catch yourself in life? And you almost have to say, what are you doing? You almost have to reprimand yourself. You almost have to make yourself. Go sit in a corner. I found myself rooting for. Kyle Busch at the end of the Daytona five hundred yesterday. I can remember where there was a time. When I had such disdain for Kyle Busch. Couldn't hardly stand. It. Didn't like the way he treated Dale, jR, attitude. It's still hates CNN interviews with him. When he loses. But for some reason or another since Danny had already one one I just kind of found myself rooting for Kyle yesterday to win a Daytona five hundred. Then I sat there and said to myself, what are you doing? Denny Hamlin wanted yesterday JD Gibbs passed away. Joe Gibbs son j d Gibbs number when he played college football and raised earlier in his life was number eleven. And didn't he Hamlin's car number is number eleven JD Gibbs kind of discovered the way the story goes Denny Hamlin up in hickory or Winston, Salem or someplace like that. And hickory Motor Speedway. Excuse me. And. Just a lot of stuff going on there yesterday. And the fact that JD Gibbs has just passed away. It just they honored him on a lap. Number eleven all the JAGER. Pit crew. Members went and stood near the wall on pit road. And it was just a business one of those storybook endings that was very cool. And and I got nothing against any Hamlin. So Daytona five hundred yesterday. One of the problems. I don't know how you would rectify that. But one of the problems NASCAR. Is that when you get to the end of the race? When you keep on having wrecks. And then you have to park the cars for ten and fifteen minutes. That doesn't help. If all the sudden, you're down to the last three seconds of a basketball game. And the team that's going to get the ball is one point behind. If you make him sit there for ten or fifteen minutes while you figure out exactly how you're going to inbound the ball. People are going to bail. And if you do that a couple of times, I mean, it took them forty minutes to finish the last few laps of the race. And it happens all the time. So I don't know. Like, I say, I don't really know what you do about that. You can't tell guys don't be aggressive. If you're not in the hunt. Don't be aggressive. But I mean, it just doesn't you just don't get to the crescendo of that thing. And then have somebody have to go look for their oboe. So. Nascar. There was an article in the USA today. Nascar has a problems in the drivers aren't sure about how to fix it. And it talked about divers that have retired. And and if you think about the old guard that's gone out. And this that and the other, but I don't know. I don't know if I'm a Representative of all of this or not, but. Sports sometimes have to re invent themselves. Football goes from offensive to defensive dominance, and they'll tweak the rules. So that you'll end up with more offense. Or whatever the case may be and in basketball it occurred to me over the weekend basketball has very much reinvented itself. They don't give a damn about me. They're not looking for a forty five plus white audience. They're going after millennials. My kids are millennials? My kids grew up listening to rap and and so they weren't listening to rock radio stations. They were listening to PG in place in stations like that. That's exactly what you just experienced in the NBA weekend or the weekend. I read a review today about the halftime show yesterday. J Cole got local ties, right? That was the most horrendous halftime show, in my opinion I've ever seen.

"Wieners out. Now, that's not a command. That's a statement wieners out. Disgraced former congressman. Convicted sexual offender, Anthony Weiner. Is out. How much time should you spend in prison for sexting a fourteen year old? I mean, that's certainly not more than what fifteen months, teen months late max, that's too much. They only went against him because this country is against high power politicians, and particularly Democrats. Well, he's also asked to pay a ten thousand dollar fine. Which shouldn't be hard for him seeing that he had a lot of money in the first place, but he also has to register as a sex offender, and he does have three years probation where he is closely monitored when they say probation how much sexting with fourteen year olds does that allow for. I don't think any well, he's a democrat. So maybe you should at least give him a couple of week routing. Perhaps when you really think about it. He can do as much as he wants. He just kick it caught again exactly that'd be a little bit like crime was. I mean who you to judge love is love, and who are you to judge right away. If a man named Carlos danger wants to interact with a fan of Justin Bieber. Actually too old reference. Probably all over fourteen whoever is popular enough cars voicing ice. Cardi B would Cardi B. No. Oh, no. How can you stop a man from doing such a thing, by the way? There's somebody else that is in prison for similar things. It's Bill Cosby and Bill Cosby is quote, having an amazing experience for him, right? In an interview. His press spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt said he's he used the term amazing experience. Now, he was sentenced to three to ten years in prison for drugging and sexually assaulting women. He is he's living off by himself. For a while. He's just been. Just been put into general population. His wife still has not come to meet him in prison. No, no, he talks two or three times a day for three minutes on the phone. He says he doesn't want her to come see him in prison. But he's having an amazing experience. He said, it's it's not what he expected. That's great news. Oh, things changed things change quickly. You know, there's the time. We're Bill Cosby was so beloved in our society. Can I give you a little flashback here for a moment? This is I think an interesting study in how the media operates. So the governor of Virginia he he wore black face in the early nineteen hundred as you know, I know. And remember my first of all let's remember where this started started with her incomplete racist Megan Kelly who just asked a question. I don't understand if you're wearing it. If you're wearing black face, you know, but you want to glorify that person. She was terminated immediately for asking the question can you wear black face if you're doing it tribute? And you're trying to look like this individual. She was terminated immediately. That's amazing. I had totally forgotten. That was. Yeah. One hundred million or twenty million dollars a year. Whatever she got a full sixty seven million dollar payout. Sixty seven. That's how much they wanted to get rid of her. And they did it with the excuse that she was a racist. Because she asked that question, but tell me about the governor who still still in office in office and also the third third guy in line for bring governor also had worn black face the second guy in line. He was only a sexually assaulting people. Well, yeah. Allegedly the black faces not alleged. Yes. Because that would actually so remember this is the one thousand nine early nineteen eighties. He admits to having Michael Jackson and black face on and the reporting on it from the New York Times was I think the headline was the governor parties like it's eighteen eighty four that was their headlining. I thought to myself like here's a yes, obviously, we all know that is a really bad idea, and you should not you should not wear it. However, there has been a time in the past where that was not the way people thought about it. I mean, certainly some did right. Like, we know that there have been really bad examples of of this over the past. But I thought myself soul man was a movie released by a major studio which the plot of the movie is a white guy goes into black face to get into Harvard. And it's a whole Larry is comedy about a white guy who puts on black face to go into harbour. Now, we would all say now that would not be something that would be released and no one would would act in it. If offered however in this period was it that crazy again, it was before soul man came out like what six years previous to this. He supposedly wore black face. Okay. And in one thousand nine hundred eighty six the movie soul man came out, and I thought to myself self. What was the New York Times saying about soul man in nineteen Eighty-six? Because were they out there saying like this is a relic from eighteen eighty four? They said the now they're saying it's party like in one thousand eight hundred eighty four here's their review of soul man in the New York Times from nineteen Eighty-six. I'd love to. There's nothing I want you to understand this Glenn. There's nothing automatically funny about the story of a rich white college. Boy who masquerades as a black. There's nothing it's not automatically not automatically. You gotta work into that. We're gonna make you work for that laugh. Than just putting the black face on, which of course, funny, but automatically automatically. You guys got good. Nothing automatically funny about the story of a rich white college boy who masquerades is black in order to collect a scholarship to Harvard Law School. That's putting it mildly. But man, which opens today at Lowe's, state and other theaters has a breezy unapologetic manner. And it also happens to be funny, which goes a long way towards making up for any of the underlying obtuseness or insensitivity. Director has arrived at this. Cheerful frat house version of Tootsie. Frat house version of Tutsi. Yeah. Hang on. Just a second. Could see even be made today. I don't think probably not probably not. Because wouldn't that be a? Because it was a it was cross stress cross dresser. And he was pretending to be a woman to be near his children. I know that you're confusing that with MRs Doubtfire. Oh, okay. Another one you can make that one. So wait, what's Tutsi about see is the actor that couldn't get a job? He was a great couldn't get a job. He needed to be a strong woman is what they were looking for. So and everybody's saying he was a bad actor, and he's like, okay. I'll show you. It's a brilliant funny. Funny movie funny movie. I mean, probably not automatically funny. Sure. But funding. Fight is not automatically know is important to point. I'm just a guy in address isn't automatically funny. Now, I will say I will ask this question is it as the New York Times called Solman in nineteen Eighty-six Blythe silly good natured movie and of its kind quite an enjoyable one. Now, hang on just the governor of Virginia is in trouble. Now, if he was the one, well if he's either one in the picture with the clan. Okay. He's in trouble. But he denies that. That's him either the clan or the black face guy. Right. And again, this is this is not something you want to push back on. But I mean, if the what's the point of the clan black guy photo, like the only thing I can think of why this photo would exist is the odd pairing, right? Like, an odd. Couple of two people going to a party wants a clan member and one's not wanna black guy. Right. That's probably the quote unquote joke. Right. Not that. I'm defending it. Right. But I don't know is that any more or less offensive than being Michael Jackson in black face previously. I don't know. Yeah. I think it actually it may be kind of like, you know, a Jew in prison garb going with. Not a good look funny. However, Michael Jackson. I bet that was a breezy performance. It goes back to what Megan Kelly was saying. Yeah. Is this so bad? Yeah. I think you know, I'm not going to shun anybody, you know, from business thirty years after their life because they did that. However when you are. When you are doing a tribute to someone like he was doing with Michael Jackson. Is that so bad in the theory being that if you're trying to compliment someone has dressing up like it's the same controversy. You see every Halloween now where if you dress up as a native American, right, you're taking their culture, and it's offensive. But if the person is saying, well, I'm not doing it to be offensive. I'm doing it. Because I like that culture is that a problem and today. Absolutely. It is a nineteen eighty was it. I don't know in nineteen Eighty-six. The New York Times was praising a major studio release about black face. You had for the first time in American history. You had a bunch of white kids wanting to be black like Michael Jackson and your star who was black changing his face to try to be white or a woman or had a very rare disease. Now, I'm sure what that was. The New York Times goes on to talk about his phony looking afro in the movie, and this is what actually reminded me of this. When you said Cosby, this is one of the quotes from the movie, the this is from the white guy in black facing these these are the eighties. This is the Cosby decade America loves black people. This is a hilarious joke. They quote in the movie, they're praising marksman or remains unchanged after his physical transformation his attitudes could not help but be affected in the end. A Tutsi like learning experiences emerges from this adventure. He finds for example that he can no longer. Stand listening to the beach, boys. That's your learning experience. If this seems speedy and superficial course in conscious raising and it comes at relatively late in the film. It's better than nothing, and the pretty actress named Milota harden does what little she can with the role of a white girl who wants to sleep with Mark simply because he's black. Something about four hundred years of oppression and anger as she explains. It. This is it a positive review. So is that still available? But.
