"Bill. Strengthening family leave protections pushed the bill over the finish line. We have to both, I think, pushed for those types of policies but also have them within our own bodies well and not just for members, but for staff. Weeks acknowledges there are tough questions in making work easier for the Legislature's young Parents should part of maternity leave, Be remote put his patients so that ISA legislator can still vote for bills that my constituents care about while I take leave, or did we not do that, because we should respect that Leave, which, says Speaker Anthony Rendon seems open to revisiting remote participation policies. I'm guy Mars Iraqi news and you can hear Guy and Marissa Lagos. Interview Assemblywoman Wicks. On this week's installment of our political breakdown, podcast. A group of activists plans to go on a hunger strike today to protest the Antioch Police Department's hiring of a former San Francisco police officer who resigned after he was disciplined for shooting and killing a homeless man. Cupid's Julia McAvoy reports. Antioch residents who oppose the hiring of Officer Michael Malone has been asking for his removal since he joined the force in August last year. Their concerns echo those of anti police brutality activists across the country, namely that police who face discipline for misbehaviour are too often able to move on to another department officer. Malone is not a safe option for the city of Anyang. Nursing student Michelle Parmenter is one of the six hunger strikers. It's not appropriate to have killer cots continuously rotated throughout the system. The antique Police Department and police union have both defended the hiring of Malone..

"Large and small back to the general fund so their budgets states like California were running some surpluses now running historic deficits and challenges related to unemployment claims the likes of which they haven't seen since the great depression these are challenging times and they require a collaborative spirit they were choir the level of cooperation that led to a conversation with our western governors and our western pack where we decided it would be best if we go together and advance our needs and put to light and to put into writing our hope and expectation of support from the federal government and today we are putting out jointly governors of Oregon Washington Nevada and Colorado and their respective leadership in their assembly and in their state Senate some our house of representatives depending on the state but the signature of the speaker the leader pro tem of the Senate not just the assembly in each of those states and the governor and our speaker Anthony Rendon are pro tem and Toni Atkins and the minority leader of the assembly Republican Marie Waldron signed several letter to the federal government to Nancy Pelosi to Mitch McConnell and others requesting aid in a one trillion dollar range that's the range of support we feel we need as a nation states municipals as well as counties this is the the requirement of this moment these and it gives you a sense of the thrust of of the the needs that we are all feeling as states as regions as city a required to get through this pandemic and to make sure the we're doing justice to you to your public health to your public safety to our education system because remember these budgetary shortfalls are so much bigger than any state any city any county but they directly impact public safety our firefighters or police officers our first responders they directly impact public education and our teachers they directly impact public health and ability for counties to support their public health systems it's not just states asking for bail out quite the contrary it's requesting that we support those that we need the most at this time our public safety officials our public health officials and make sure that we do justice to our public education system so I am very pleased with this pack I'm very pleased with the letter and I couldn't be more proud and honored by the signatures of all of those not only are three leaders in the state but substantively those leaders across the United States in this pact that represent legislative leaders not just the executives themselves so I want to just begin with that and I also extend appreciation for the ongoing collaborative this best practice sharing that continues within these regional packs it needs to I think it and spread impressed not only me but a live in all of us the ability for chiefs of staffs and our office of emergency personnel to continue to share best practices in real time and just based on a lot of those conversations this is one of the one of the efforts that we are now making public here today another after we've been focusing on S. PP and doing more together and figure out ways that we can you know leverage our purchasing capacity a little bit more I want to just give you an update on Friday in the state of California we do something we've not been able to do in the asked and that is we released a Levin million procedure masks too critical industries all throughout the state of California Levin million masks were distributed just on Friday alone five million mass one specifically to our department of social services to our child care facilities are in home support services and our other DSS run adult and senior facilities and I want to just pause on that for a moment we talk a lot about skilled nursing facilities of which there twelve hundred twenty four but the department of social services is responsible for an additional seven thousand four hundred and forty two senior and adult facilities throughout the state of California these tend to be smaller but still precious and important and so when we have talked a lot about sniffs and skilled nursing facilities and getting P. P. and more testing it's also incumbent upon all of us to expand that conversation all of these other facilities easier we have six or seven people sometimes even less in small group homes that are very vulnerable to this virus as well so we were able to get those five million procedure masks into that system and broaden our our capacity to deliver on our promise to provide that protective gear that's so essential and foundational for not only our public health the safety of those residents and staff but also to help us move forward and reopen the economy accordingly we able to get four point two million masks to farmworkers in into our agricultural community four point two million just on Friday as well seven hundred fifty thousand to our groceries are soon R. I. grocers and our food supply chain five hundred thousand masts went into the department of education on Friday and tens of thousands of mass I went to transit agencies across the state again all of this is foundational in terms of getting where we all want to go in that's into this second phase and beginning to continue or rather to begin more robustly modify our stay at home order and so we talk a lot about testing we'll be talking more about that tomorrow we talk about tracing we talked a lot about that last week in the good work partnerships with U. C. S. staff and UCLA and how we have that first cohort of five hundred that are being trained almost all of them now trained both online and in person in those twenty hour training about PP is also foundational in this effort as well and so that's why I just wanted to share with you those updates and and that information as well just in addition to that briefly open up for questions here in a moment I want folks to know that we had some very constructive conversations over the last seventy two or so hours nineteen different counties I think a star public health officials and dialogues around the cell certifications these variances that we will start seeing throughout the state of California so very healthy dialogues I think they're nine more scheduled that we have lined up just today so we've been active in that space actively working with these counties in some cases we are very close and tomorrow will be making some announcements of the county seven already in that space in terms of their attestations to their plans their prevention plans containment plans and all of the guidelines that we put out around them with more formally put out the detailed sectoral guidelines tomorrow to help it Vance those efforts that's in the dining space that's in the office space some malls etcetera so more a prescriptive language with flexibility yes but prescriptive in terms of those guidelines being a little bit more formalized and those come out tomorrow and that will see I'm sure more conversations take shape and dot more engagement being advanced once those once those guidelines come out as well but good news progress in that space and I know others are more eager to move more quickly and we will work with every county with every city any practical and responsible way but here's the caviar this is a health driven conversations not because we don't want to not because we would not like to it's not because we want to be particularly oppressive in terms of people's desires and needs just because public health dictates that we do this and you judicious and thoughtful way we're not going to deviate from that path that's the foundational principle that guided us into the stay at home order and will guide us out of the state home order data evidence but again we are flexible in this respect we're not ideologues in terms of the engagement we recognize no two counties are alike no two cities within counties are like and we want to be responsive and respectful to those calls but no that these are dynamic conversations each county requires an enormous amount of attention and support and we're getting incredible response for the vast majority counties that have done that Norma's amount of work already but there are some stubborn data points that are impediments in terms of total number of hospitalizations total capacity on search total capacity to trace and test and of course death rates that continue to be challenging I mentioned just last week that we had seen a good week for declining death rates only see the week of death rates go back up we begin I'll begin this week with good news in that respect weekend numbers I always well good news in this respect twenty five deaths devastating nonetheless twenty five lives lost families torn asunder but twenty five dash to begin this week far cry from how we began last week was substantially higher number of deaths but were still seen lives lost from this pandemic we're still seeing the number of positives increase they increased again overnight by roughly well twelve thousand five hundred excuse me twelve hundred and fifty roughly but we are seeing some good signs as well hospitalization so they went modestly up point nine percent we saw icy use yesterday dropped point four percent so again hospitalizations I see use of bouncing back and forth but study death rate little bit better today but we saw those numbers last week increase and continuing to see the positive numbers go up and that's just the point of caution and concern is people get ahead of themselves a little bit and I recognize that those symptoms and and terms of you know the cabin fever while feeling how businesses are so eager to get back to work but it is absolutely incumbent upon all of us to be thoughtful and judicious as we move into this next phase and just and and to reinforce an important point this is a dynamic process last week we made an announcement as it relates to retail manufacturing and logistics allowing from a state wide order those restrictions to be lifted modification still in place but the statewide prohibitions to be lifted in these lower impact industries we recognize that there are counties that are still holding a little stronger other bay area wants to continue for an additional week and we respect the right based on local conditions for people to to be a little more strict at the same time with these variances we recognize the same we want to see people loosen up with conditions that can be met and expectations that can be delivered but it's also important to note that we are continue as a state to move into this phase two and we will be making announcements this is a dynamic process this is a very interrogative of flow here that you should anticipate weather department of public health will be putting out guidelines we hope on a consistent basis to.

"Don't off the market. It's not ticking. Down one to three the way by the way. The pitching market has Grandma's off the market Didi Gregorius. Signed this week We stock is is off the market. Where Brett Gardner's earners is going back to to the Yankees like if you want a veteran position player particularly on the dirt? There's only one way to go and I think they're the number of teams that it's who didn't get their guy Gives gives Donaldson. I think a lot of leverage. I think he's a really good spot. Right yeah and it kind of reminds me of less winter sir where people were mad at the dodgers for not signing Bryce Harper for instance and the big move they made was signing h. e. Pollick and it seems somewhat underwhelming but then they went out out and they want one hundred six games and yes. They had an early exit from the playoffs. But you know at that easily could have gone the other way. If Dave Roberts had made some different moves or not those moves at all so it's hard to have been a better team than the twenty nine hundred dodgers so they were somewhat vindicated in that approach at the same time. I was still curious to see if we would see them. Land one of the big boys. Because we just haven't seen Friedman do that really I think pollick is the biggest expenditure he is made on free agent who was not resigning with the dodgers on an outside player so whether it's because he's kind of conditioned to operate the way he did with the raise or because they just have such a great base of talent that they haven't really had the urgency to go out and sign the top player available. They haven't done that. They haven't handed out the enormous deal in the way that other teams have and and you can't say it has really hurt them unless you think that that was the thing that was keeping them from going to you know a a championship parade instead of losing in game. Seven of the world series or something which is a difficult argument to make. Yeah it's hard to I mean you. Just look at the I sorta roll my eyes when like the Red Sox talk about sustainability but the the dodgers have really just rolled this machine over for seven. Oh seven division. Titles two pennants two hundred seasons in a they've I think they're they're set up just fine for the future. Even with the padres improving sort of breathing down their neck The National Leagues Probably Going to get a little bit tougher in the next couple of years. But yeah I I A hundred percent understand the frustration. Yeah I think they had the capacity to to add one of these top three top three reagents but I think like the angels in particular just needed more and that made the difference. You saw them going an extra year compared to the Rangers give them more money up front than the nationals did. Yeah I think this is just a situation where the team that wanted the player the most got the player because that that want You know inspired them to to to stretch themselves in the way it you know. And that's the way free agency ought to work. And the dodgers have resisted the urge to make the splashy trade in the past two when they had the option to save save trade seger bellinger bueller any of their top prospects for some veteran at the time. They didn't do that and the kept them and I think they're happy to have done that in the long run and now they have this new wave of young players who established themselves in two thousand nineteen and could be good for years to come. So they're in a pretty enviable people position even without making the big move this week but I I don't know if we have any other specific reactions to this transaction but we should probably talk about just big picture this week as a whole right and just what happened. What is going on with this market which I know we've already discussed but it gets more perplexing by the day it because again we're coming off two off seasons when the market was just slow? Moving things didn't get done until spring if they got done at all and here we've gone polar opposite other end of the spectrum. Everything is happening really fast. Even more so than we would have expected before twenty seventeen and and yet at the same time you have all these kind of conflicting signals where you have the most non tenders ever and teams treating. Those players is disposable and a certain in class of player. Not really finding a home in this market. Like Adam Jones for instance who just signed a deal to go play in Japan and then at the same time as you have teams shelling out spending being lots of money on these great players you also have teams dangling equally great players Carlos Correa beds and Kris Bryant in Francisco Endure Howard Howard. Both of these things happening at the same time. It is very confusing. I don't know exactly what to make of this except that Scott. Boris is a legend and and heck of a week. Yeah I I meant to put that in my Riendeau thing because I was ready in the middle of the night I forgot. But he'd go. She added something like eight hundred million dollars worth of contracts tracks hidden three and a half days man. I mean there's a reason he's the best in the business. Yeah he's been doing this for decades like he represented for baseball before Scott. Boris no wizardy. We weren't around annexes agent when he signed with the braves like that was one of the first big free agency said he was Kevin Brown's right. Yes yes yeah Gen when he became the first hundred million guy. He was a rod's agent when he became the first two hundred million dollar guy and then he was Harper's agent when he became the first I to go over three hundred and now of course he's Kohl's agent when he becomes the first pitcher over that milestone its just decades and the game keeps changing around him and owners come and go. Oh in front offices operate completely differently from how they did in the nineties but one way or another scuppers gets players paid and still finds time for extremely elaborate ornithological the logical analogies so. We don't get emails about this. Harper wasn't the first three hundred million dollar player but it was the over three hundred. Yeah well the well Machado Stanton contract. Yes free agent. Yeah that was like that. Contract was obviously like traced along the outlines of whatever it would take to make it the richest contract ever nine but yeah I'd be boers has been. Do I just like. We said he's been doing this as long as we can remember. He still looks the same to take a picture of Scott Boras up in the attic where he's getting poorer over the course of of years but yeah. I floated this theory on effectively actively well and I don't know if I buy it or not but could it be that the fact that Machado lingered on the market until late February and Harford inside until March. COULD THAT HAVE BEEN IN A. I've seen some people suggest. Well the free agents are just better this year and these are more appealing players and and I get that in a sense like Harper carper wasn't coming on the thing is both of those players were like increase. Incredibly appealing players. In Machado was coming off a really great year Harper. Not so much but of course he had that in his not too distant past and the thing is that they were both really young. You're free agents. And that should have made them more appealing but part me wonders whether that made it more complicated to sign them because yet to figure out what a deal would look like for free agent of that level of accomplishment and that at age which we don't usually see so it was like well will they sign a six or seven year contract and still have the chance to sign another long-term deal in your thirties. Or do you have to workout at twelve or thirteen year. -Til which is what ended up happening and there are so few precedents for that that I could just see that taking longer and teams being more reluctant. Didn't to commit to a player that long even if it's not really different from committing to a player who's several years older for several years shorter but this year it sort of the standard standard like well. It's seven ish years and Co of course got nine but with Don with Strasbourg. You know it's it's a little more in the realm of contracts we typically we see than last year which was very unusual players contracts. That was something some that stood out to the random deal is like there were obvious comps. Thanks for him. Yeah In recent years with the air contract and the Machado contract and the seems you know pretty much in line with what you would expect that. He's you know a little bit older Machado so he gets shorter deal for a little more money. This is it just all seemed very reasonable according to precedent. That's I think right analysis from from the player perspective I think from the team perspective besides Cole who went to the Yankees and I guess Strasbourg. Even though a lot of people thought he would just re-signed with the nationals Basically all of these big contracts have gone to teams that have not been successful. In recent years going to the Angels Wheeler and gregorious going going to the Phillies Grondahl. Going to the white sox. Mistakes going to the reds pomeranz going to the padres so on and so on you have players signing with teams. That aren't taking the Tigers. Orioles are like they haven't signed any notable regions but a lot of those mid two trims haven't been successful are the ones making new splashes and conversely the teams that have been successful in recent years the cubs the Indians the red sox even the Astros are the ones floating trading in their star players. So I wonder if there's some sort of cyclical nature here where teams might be more okay with spending if it can help them win But once you've already one then it's okay. We one for that year. Now let's make some more money and I'm not sure if that is proven or just looking at kind have confirmation bias small sample but if you go down the list of free agent sorted by average annual value sign this year you get a lot of non playoff teams the ones I mentioned. And you just keep going down. The Rangers have signed a few pitchers. The giants have even made some additions. And I think it's a reminder that it's good when and more than like five teams actually trying to win and say what you want about the tanking teams like. I think it's absolutely terrible that the orioles decided they weren't GonNa Pay Jonathan Vr. But when you have like twenty teams or whatever the number is actually like trying to be somewhat competitive and emerged for me building cycles. I think that opens up the market a bit. Yeah I so my take on this is this seems like rational response to to incentives incentives And maybe it took a little while in the Post Process Astros or cubs tank Situation for teams to figure out how how to behave so there are two aspects. That one is that. They're realizing that they knew this already. But there's a a One of my least favorite like logical fallacies that is involved in baseball Discourse is that the difference between like the best player in the the second best player the second best player in the third player is the same as the difference between the fourteenth and fifteenth. Best Player. So like you realise that it's you know maybe you don't go out and Shell out because you like out of Dallas Kyko more than Cole Hamels or something like that but you go out and you go get Garrett Cole. Because you like him more than Stephen Strasburg are you like him. More than Zack Wheeler like it's worth paying that premium at the very very top of the market and that those are the guys that we're seeing getting paid but at the same time the realizing that you know Jonathan. VR Is interchangeable. It's not necessarily worth it to to pay him an extra couple of million when you can go out and get some other some other middle infielder builder and it doesn't matter at all if you if you're committed to losing a hundred ten games anyway and the other rational part of this is that it's a broken system system that the incentive structure the payment structure is based on behavior and and And Baseball Philosophy from at least twenty years ago maybe as as far far back as forty years ago. And it's just we're going to get perverse incentives and a structure that is just not designed to keep up with the way. The baseball works works right now and beyond that because of because so much of the money in baseball is not tied to attendance or local local interests that it's locked in a TV contracts. There's no real financial incentive to win eighty-five Games and misapplied instead of fifty and miss the playoffs. If you're if you can run a rock bottom payroll you essentially you know if you're going to run one hundred fifty million dollar payroll Miss Playoffs by a couple of games. It makes way more sense to run a fifty million eighty dollars payroll and misplaced by forty games and that's what teams are responding to right now and so I mean it's I think things are working better within the system but the system is just completely outmoded and my concern not to turn this back into. Oh my God there's going to be another work stoppage but like we're at a point where the system is just so perverted info and there's no incentive for owners to change it because they're not in it for the sport sport they're in it for real estate deals they're in.

"I mean it really makes a difference because of the weakness in the thinness of the rest of that staff and the fact fact that in his absence last year and of course with a tyler skaggs passing the bullpen pitched many more innings than the rotation did for the angels last last year. And I'll be curious to see if they try to do that again with a better bullpen. Perhaps or whether they do have one or maybe two more moves in them now. I think they're at an estimated total of about one hundred. Seventy seven million right now for twenty twenty so depending on how adventurous already Marino is feeling there is room there. Air To add another solid starting pitcher or two without even going above the competitive balance tax threshold not that that threshold is lava that you can't touch or anything but she team seemed to treat it that way. Yeah I think like this is another situation where with Zack wheeler signing in some of the stuff that we're with the the nationals even or the Red Sox or all the trades we were talking about yesterday On our second emergency podcast ask out of three and three days The we have to have some sort of rhetorical shorthand for we know the competitive balance tax threshold is bullshit but teams are. They're gonNA treat it like like you said like it's made Alava and I think at the angels are going to compete in the short term. They need to they need say. SCREW THE TAX I. They just have so many holes they've had so many you know I feel for already Marino and and angels management on one level because they've tried so many things that it feels like one of them ought to have worked by now but they're they're still reeling from from the pool. Sign didn't really work. Obviously they got off of Off off the coast our contract but it costs a first-round draft pick essentially and so just they've been playing catchup all in one way or another for for a really. The entire decade really since trout came up and And that has left him in a little bit of a precarious financial position where you know even even with the Astros in the division and even with pretty solid raising as teams Going after the wildcard. I like you could see the path to the playoffs. They just need need. It's for want of a couple good big leaguers and you can get those guys on the free agent market or get those guys and trade market like they don't. It's just going to put them. I'm over the tax. I think that's just the AK- do it but they have to spend and it's it's GonNa be a matter of of willingness I think One thing the interesting interesting thing that that has been coming up. I think Jeff Fletcher of the Orange. County Register's been been beating this drum The angels are pursuing Corey. Kluber in a trade. Those rumors are back. And now we've got a specific destination Miles bad as Corey Kluber Israeli good and if they can get me solves Holds a lot of their problems. I agree with that analysis. Zach Corey Kluber. Yes he's pretty good. I am curious why they would give up for him. Because Joel I don't think would be traded for anyone basically and I'm not sure if the angels have the prospect up up to make that work according to the fan graphs rankings. I'm looking at. They only have one other player in the top one hundred. And he's all the way at seventy four so maybe you know they. They have a lot of position. Players now signed long term contracts. You can deal with some of that depth. I'm just not sure if they have like the top guy to get something like that done one one name. I talked about yesterday and I'm not sure if it's still an option now that they're paying Anthony Don'- but if the RED SOX WANNA get out from under David Price contract I I felt like the angels could be a decent destination there One other name. I'm curious about is Madison Bumgarner. Who We've seen connected to to the other L. A. team the dodgers by? I don't think there have been that many other teams that have been in discussion about signing him and I think Bumgarner is maybe being a bit overlooked next to all the other big name pitchers and I've been critical of how he's developed as he's gotten a little older and gives up a lot of hard contact but he's still a mighty good pitcher and certainly would give the innings that staff like the angels needs. I'm just thinking about the risk of signing any bumgarner. Is he in trout. Go on a hunting expedition and just never bothered to come back and report camp Yeah so the the point about the farm system I you know. It's not as bad as it was a couple years ago. The there were like it. There was like a shorthand. The angels are just rock bottom farm system. And that's not the case anymore. Obviously they don't trade for Kluber but I think the the good thing about trading for Kluber now considering that like he came off a essentially an injury right offseason. It's GonNa take a lot less and zero older than he was last off season when those When those trade rumors I started to crop up so it's not going to like it might have taken? Eighty nodded del but like atop a package headlined by top forty top fifty prospect to get them. I don't necessarily know that that's the case anymore particularly considering that that Cleveland is just running away from even modest financial commitments. You know we saw they. They dumped a I think they they made a good trade For travel driver or getting rid of Trevor Bauer. But they're trading away the core that team that that won twenty odd in a row and and went to the world series. And so you know maybe like like maybe a brandon marsh package gets you. Get You Corey Kluber now. Just because Cleveland is that uninterested winning and obviously we talked about this with the the coal signing it takes aches probably the best pitcher away from one of the teams that the angels would need to compete against for a playoff spot. So if they can if they can pull that off I think that's a a a really solid that would be a really solid piece of business. giving up pretty much anything in their farm system up to Adele With that said with the angels Kluber armone fall off and we never hear from him again. But it's that's the kind of deal they need to be making like to to take advantage of of competitive headed what other competitive teams seem to be doing which is just shedding salary to put the best team they can together for a hundred ninety million dollars and not you. You know not exceeding or getting close to luxury taxes more important than winning for a lot of teams. If the angels removed that restriction they can take advantage of a lot of a lot of teams. That are sally. When they really shouldn't? Although at the same time they just made that Kosar trade so who knows what they will do. Should we talk about these spurned suitors. Four horrendo- who now have to look for some other options so obviously the nationals will now have to replace one of their best players it sounded like the dodgers and the Rangers were the most host in unreined known as free agent. So if you were going to do a winners and losers of the winter meetings I suppose you'd have to put the dodgers on the losers list just because they missed out on their big quarry they. Obviously we're going after coal. They were going after window and they didn't land either of those guys and I don't know if that's just a reflection of the fact that the dodgers are in a pretty good position as it is they have A great base of young talent and also veteran talent it would have required some moving players around for them to make room for rendering they would have had to shift turner across the Infield and then that would have limited their defensive versatility. Uh Little Bit Turner's Defensive Stats did slip a little this past season. So maybe that wouldn't have been a bad thing. And maybe that was why they were interested in considering it but that didn't work out and and now a lot of these teams will turn their attention to Josh Donaldson who is now about to be the most popular player on the market and given the rest of this smirk has proceeded. We might be talking about Josh Donaldson signing tomorrow. Noah's flood. He's not a bad fallback plan. Obviously he's much older and won't won't be signed to the same sort of long-term deal but for twenty twenty only. It's not a tremendous step down for whichever team settles for him yeah. I'm not so sure that this is terrible for the dodgers like I understand. The reasoning that team with their finances should be able to spend above the luxury tax line and I. I'm certainly sympathetic to that argument. I'm certainly sympathetic. To fans who want a world series title but the dodgers aren't really in the position that the angels were and even like the Astros we talked about yesterday and we were really curious about where they're going to go next for the rotation because by the end of last season the astros basically three pitchers and they lost one of them. The dodgers in that case particularly on offense if you ignore pitchers took like put the NFL on equal footing. The dodgers have added that the best or second best lineup in the League. Three years in a row and they didn't lose any pieces from it this winter. They still have cody bellinger. They still have. Max Muncie. They still have everyone else. Who made the lineup last year? So great who helped them to win over one hundred games they Had One hundred six wins wins and were even better than that if you look at their underlying records so I think they might need a pitching upgrade with Ryu in Richhill leaving but they I also have a lot of depth there and I'm just not convinced that they needed someone of Don's caliber particularly given the infielders. They already have. I agree and I think they're in in a in a solid position in If they WANNA make an addition via trade There was a rumor. I saw Lindores the dodgers for for Gavin Lacson dusted. May like they could do that even though their farm system is not what it was a couple years ago with the promotions guys like dating all the way back to ballinger but like In Belgium and cory seager but they promoted will Smith promoted luck. Scott a little bit of running the majors last year Walker Walker Buehler's up now maze up now and but they've still got that that base young talent that they go out and get somebody like Wendorff. They wanted to They've they've still. Oh got a lot of options. The one guy a weirdly I think a winner of this is donaldson because of the way that this shook out the timing of it he is essentially like the free agent bat right now and cause not only..

"The big interview. Listen so good I. Let's welcome to the PODCAST. Ask former Major League player former major league manager Bo Porter Bo. What's going on man? How you doing or I'll tell you what? MLB Hot Stove. I mean this is an exciting time of year for Major League Baseball and I couldn't be happier with all of the the traction that has taken place where what free the agency with trades and you look at the number of teams that have been inactive or tanking over the years I I. It's just good to see that there are quite a few teams that are looking to get better and we should say Bo. Puerto Right now is in San Diego for the winter meetings. He's also an analyst for the Washington nationals television and speaking of the nationals. Did they make a big splash on the first day of the winter meetings by by signing the stud as right hand Stephen Strasburg to a record-breaking seven year two hundred forty five million dollar contract for the right hand thirty one year we use all What a great deal for the nationals? It's a wonderful nationals. Again I think in the day and age where you see players there's jumping teams and And then you think about a guy like Stephen Strasburg who obviously was another one pick overall he he he is one of those guys that stay in Washington was very important for him. And it's great to see that the organization and the player spoke with England so get exactly Willoughby's they wanted and free agency and when you look at this bill and again you know I'm in the organization that understand you know. Learn family understand. Mike Rizzo. This was top priority for them. Stephen Strasburg to retire as a Washington national. And here's the other part that I loved. The organization organization came out no games no Baloney and said. We can't sign both guys anthony when donor was tremendous again for them. One of their guys. You said that we have two big time free agents and we're going to sign one and there was no monkey business they pick Strasbourg. And you know what you know the game ball better than anybody. The game is about pitching. And when you've got a guy like that at the top of your rotation it's hard not to want to sign him. It was very difficult. We're going again. I think when you look at the free agent market and what has taken place in the early stages of the free agent market. There's even a return to the importance of starting pitching and I think the Washington nationals run-up success through the postseason en route to winning the world series has changed the thought process. Ah Lotte Front offices. And a lot of teams as they're starting to put their teams together. And you look at having those three horses at the front of the rotations. Jim Was Strasbourg Sherzer and call in. They were able to weather the storm of even one of the worst starts in Major League Baseball Nineteen thirty one. But when you have those courses and once those forces got going it was it was a great success story for the Washington nationals. But back to the deal rob when you think about L. Strasbourg opting out of the four years. One hundred million. What does that tell you right there? I mean can you imagine a hundred million guaranteed and you opt out of it. I think I would be afraid to leave the house. Well I think one. He knew his value When you look at the market and what other pitches agents had gone? It's over the course of the last few years but when you break this deal down you have eighty million of it the furred was the Washington nationals to me this was. It's a no brainer. Because if you take the seven year to forty five and you subtract two hundred million that he was already do over the four year period. You're talking about three years at one hundred and forty five million well if you're the nationals you get to the for eighty million of that. Now you're looking at three years fifty five million team Strasbourg when you when you really start to take a deep leno does a real numbers. You're right those are absolutely real numbers. There's there's no reason not to get that done like you say already on the hook. Four hundred million Already so yeah. It's a sweet deal and for Stephen Strasburg who's comfortable in Washington There was talk about the padres and the dodgers and maybe the Yankees and different teams. Who are looking for a stud? And he's comfortable. He got paid. What he you believe even know that won't last long? We both know that Garrett Cole will will wind up getting a bigger deal but I think Strasbourg did the right thing. Yeah and getting the biggest priority team Strasbourg. I think his family and you mentioned you know him. Being comfortable in Washington he has basically. It's route to their his family's comfortable there. And those are the things for Stephen Strasburg that were paramount and his decision making and when you look at the fact that even the deferment servant of the contracts Stephen Strasburg will be a part of the Washington Nationals Organization for the rest of his life so them deferring a portion of his money. It just gives the organization more flexibility to go out and continue to make the team better. There you go Washington nationals. Get there man Dan. I don't know if they're going to repeat and win. The world sues again but they did win they did win. Strasbourg was a big part of it and they have them back in the saddle. Hey Bo Porter always a pleasure to have you on the podcast match day. talk soon. Okay thank you up. When rob was a newspaper columnist he lived by vis motto? If I'm writing I'm rippin. Let's bring in a writer. Broadcaster older new Julia McWilliams. One of the brightest new young baseball writers. He covers the Red Sox for the Boston Globe. Julia what's happening. What's GonNa Rob? Thanks man always. And he's down into winter meetings in San Diego. A lot of buzz going on down there ever was happening. And everybody's weighing on the colder. Oh to drop. You saw transfer after seven years to forty five yesterday Board held his His annual winter meetings You know a a party whatever you WANNA call it. His his his thing has a big Shebang. Yes and he's Co is GonNa get more than that and we know closing holds a better pitcher so The a Yankee said they won't be denied. Thank you said enough to be tonight. You know usually get the guy that they want and they have money to pick up money to spend. They got money they got money and you know oh I think this year against the Houston Astros when they're when they're pitching plummeted. Their bullpen ran out. I think the wake up call the CASHMAN and say hey we need to go out and get some guy. How about the Red Sox? We know the big story when Dave Dombrowski was fired as team president and they were talking about the red sox going on welfare and You know they don't have any and all that other stuff I mean. Help me out. What are they doing and is there some way somehow? mookie Betts is going to be unloaded. Well I mean that's always a possibility if you look at the luxury tax situation and if they get under the luxury tax but you're trying to get on a twenty. Njit two hundred eight million dollars vic eight hundred million dollars next year granted. You're looking at mookie Betts Guy. That's that's a You know a two thousand eighteen. MVP You know. He's the second best player in my opinion other than my trout You know this is a God is the fixture in that line of man and and you know they've gone to the table and they they. They offered him two years and this guy is adamant that he wants to go into free agency. They so they could unload them but the fact of the matter is I don't know if if you unload them and you're a team that's in the running for something you know. Okay it's not like Kawhi Leonard Situation where you're guaranteed it's baseball you know that it's not a guarantee that you win the world series just because the one guy and granted if you unload them you might be giving up some prospects in return so You know and he's a rental. It's a rental thing. So Oh it's GONNA come down to our team it'd be willing to give up the prospects and I don't know if they'll be able to be willing to do that because it'll be a huge because he's he's that type of player. What's your gut? So does he ought to. Does he play for Red Sox this year. Yeah I think he. He plays the Red Sox. This Jack can't see. It seems unless team field that they're really really close and he'd be the guy to get them over the Hump I can't see them Giving giving last year I returned the new to make twenty seven to thirty million dollars in arbitration this year. So that the one that bill I don't know I think he plays for the Red Sox this year the Texas Rangers got a big checkbook. They opened up a new ballpark. This season coming up. You know they're talking about trying to get Garrett Cole I I mean Anthony Window and what do you think about that. Where does he want? Why does he want them pay? That's I mean he's the he's the Texas kid I mean people I spoke to somebody from From the national after the won the world series and they said you know they're they're pretty much you know Sold on he's probably not gonna be able to come back next year. I know they offered him to seven years to fifteen but a lot of that was the furrow money. He declined that so I think they got they got the Strasbourg deal and now they're looking at a situation where they're trying to get them but I don't know if they'll be able to dish out that type of money to get lost and I think he either goes in Texas now The angels that makes too so you never know what that situation but this is the guy that put on the show in the world series and you know he he deserves the money for sure last thing just your gut where does Garrett Cole Wind Up is it. The Yankees isn't the dodgers. Is it the padres. Where does you wind up? Look the Yankees missed out of them in two thousand eight he decided to UCLA. He grew up Yankee Gi fan. A Yankees swing and miss when they really want somebody I think he ended up being Yank there he. Is Julian McGuire. Who covers the Boston? The Red Sox for the Boston Globe always a good recheck. Him Out Julian thank you so much. Happy Holidays to you and yours and create a robin anytime. The future is closer than you think and it all starts in the palm of your hand you may have heard the news. Five G. is coming but what does that really mean. "Dozo with Sunday it baseball's Jessica and does and Jess Wow that game last night was insane that's the kind of name I got to tell you do the post-game work and you go back to the hotel and you're staring at the walls in the hotel room wide awake because you have so much his rental in and I was what about you because eventually I did go back to sleep but you had to get up like three hours later to get up this morning yeah it was up at five and then you write everything and I know now I have such an appreciation for writers because I like to give all of because I know that everyone that I'm working with this morning didn't watch the game and so I basically the right everything that I feel like we're the highlights of things I want to get into all the stuff I need them to look up graphics Oh that's put me up until one two in the morning and the I'm upset if I walk into work and getting ready to go so I'm a morning person it's been the nights that like that's why I'm so excited about this game six because I'll tell you what there's been a couple of games this world series where I'm like fighting sleep in the sixth seventh innings. I've only got a few hours this one I mean buster there were times I was jumping on my bed in my hotel room liking the TV Blake I'm sure my neighbors the hotel do not appreciate I'm like come on the world series game six you should be watching it was it was a nutty gate for the most part we'll put it this way in the first five games the world series there was one lead change last night we had two plus all the craziness for that game distinguish itself from the rest of the world series and I've got a laundry list of stuff to get tune we'll get into all of what happened last night but let's start with this I thought you know Dave Martinez what an emotional night like he goes absolutely nuts during the course of the game we're in the seventh inning stretch and he looked down the field and all of a sudden I see Dave Martinez being restrained by one of his coaches and he's going after the umpires he winds up getting a in our life by the Japan and their life go ahead the one who's restoring him he's gotTa winds up being rejected first manager in twenty three years to be objected from a world he's game and then after the game you get knuckleheads like me going in there and ask you know the right questions about how he felt in that moment and what did you think about the call I Dave Martinez handled it perfectly because he's like you know what I don't WanNa get any that I don't want to talk about that and he said it respectfully he said I I understand but you know what it's all about game seven in so many words and that's exactly what I thought he should have done in that moment considering what the outcome was there was no reason for him to relive all the details game unless they lose like I feel like and not that you want to relive it anyway and you WanNa take the high road but there was a moment there and this is for the people who weren't watching the game live but when you're watching it live during the entire time empires had the headsets on that that the showing trae Turner in the out just the emotions completely I mean honestly watching the broadcast they were bleeping out every other word was coming out of that dugout because it was so much emotion it felt like that something we're gonNA WE'RE GONNA be talking about this moment for years because in that moment it felt like the nationals are gonNA lose this game and this is why it's GonNa be because of this so I think Dave Martinez would have been a completely different person had anthony rendon day income and hit that home run I think then he would have been a lot more but when you win the game and it's like why go back in blow up that entire call a hundred percent and that's what I thought was really smart by him to not go back and relive that because they won the game and they force game seven and game seven will be started by Max Scherzer who chess on Sunday comes walking stiffly into the interview room in front of reporters he When he was answering questions he wasn't turning his neck he was sitting in his wheelchair and turning the whole swivel chair to talk to reporters and he was so down he gets a cortisone shot which pitchers talk about is being such essentially a miracle drug and then yesterday when we walk into the Ballpark here in Houston he's in catching the outfield and goes to Intel's Day Martinez I'm ready to go and you get the feeling that this could be something that could fire or at the players I asked David about that before the game yesterday about you know whether or not the players might rally around this any mentioned that time when Max fouled the ball off he was on face broke his nose and the next day Texan picture instead I'm good to go and he started that day with the black is Dave said that got the players fired up I gotta believe tonight there'll be so much adrenaline Max on the mound especially because I mean from that press conference buster and and for those of us that know him he was devastated Leanne devastated on Sunday that he could not help his team and I felt like it worked in the reverse like he could not hide the emotion of how much he felt like he was leading his team down and because of that and not because that's the sole reason they lost by any means at all but I felt like the team reacted to his devastation and not just him not pitching the overall vibe that he was giving like I feel awful that I can't pitch in game that I'm supposed to I think it works in the reverse for game seven because he is battled on everything he can the cortisone shot I think my only concern was shirt tonight is we've seen in his starts in this postseason him go one hundred ten and plus pitches how much length can't he give this team now the good thing is you know Daniel Hudson Sean deal those two pitchers you can use anybody pretty much out of the bullpen and there is more options for Dave Martinez out of the bullpen but what we've seen is they need length from these starters how much length can shares her bring your stuff was just flat from the get-go the guys more pitches than anybody in baseball this year over four thousand he just he just didn't have it and I think it was because he he's tired at the end of a long year and right that's the question about Max tonight on the other side we're GonNa see Zach ranking who's also looked tiredness postseason and I would assume that he's he followed by Garrett Cole I talked to Garyk before game six and asked him about how his ability with game seven was something he was handling because of the flight on the day last turn it had a similar situation where normally I would pen on day two but since we were flying I decided to it settled in DC and throw my pen on day three which for this week sets up pretty much the same exact way and I felt really good last week on day three so I'm just taking the same routine did last week to prepare for the bullpen as I'm doing this week to prepare for possibly having to pitch game seven yes I think he's GonNa wind up pitching like innings four through six tonight what do you think yeah I think so I think this is something that you definitely see and I think just for the royalva nats I mean to be able to get to that grinky you know the point that they want to be able to do they're going to have to do it early and once they do that knowing what is looming in the bullpen and that's one thing opposite of the nationals is the astros have so many guys that they can go to and Garrett Cole who has been the ultimate throw down the hammer are you know for the scene the one point I have to make with Garrett Cole and I know we've seen it so much but the last time he has pitched in relief you go back to his freshman year at us Cla I went and looked at this against the ant eaters gave up a winning run I mean this is like I know it's liked onion cheek like it's been how long since he was a little frothy with the Bruins this is something that I do think fans that now we've seen it time and time again from Randy Johnson no Madison Bumgarner these star pitchers come out of the bullpen it's not as easy is it looks folks he's talking about it being similar to bullpen game he's never done it really he's never done it as a professional he's never done it with the Astros this is something that I think you definitely look for especially early on if he's coming in mid inning what what is he doing where's his heart rate because it's definitely different than than coming in just as the starter all right let's dig into game six last night we'll start with this golf clap or Stephen Strasburg watching that last night just reminded me of how I felt during the two thousand fourteen postseason watching Madison bumgarner where he seemed so in control where even when there were runners on base pitching backwards coming back and counts by throwing off speed pitches he was just absolutely composed and in the end despite the fact that Max Sherzer got up at one point in the sixth inning there Stephen Strasburg still out on the mound in the ninth inning what a performance the fifth five no yeah this amazing to me again Jose Altuva and I remember in the moment I sent this note to our producer in the moment I was like I don't know what's GonNa Happen in this game but to me this is the stories this isn't even the game like that fifth inning at bat it to Jose Altuve to me was the series why I mean you have a pitcher or a hitter up to bat similar to the Anthony Rendon in the first inning where all you really gotta do is put the bomb play take one of those breaking balls fine whole get to the grass score some runs and respond and felt like to all the guys in that order that's what he does I mean that guy can hit anything and Stephen Strasburg you'll get three pitches he started on what the

"The I heart radio it's money that this site coming up after five thirty will go over the power outages that are affecting a lot of people up in northern a California Pacific gas electric has pulled the plug I had a very concerned about the high fire risk and by the way I will mention this but here in southern California I mean besides so callous and turning off power they had told us John and red flag days they would clear out those homeless encampments that are in the high fire danger is that going on thank you as the winds are supposed to hit tonight here he should be out there now picking up their crap and does the vagrants are gonna be cooking their midnight deals tonight known so you can wake up tomorrow morning and you have to count to be on fire you may have to evacuate again yeah so I I'm sure they'll wait wait do you think are said he is directing the encampment clean up hours away from a big win descent no he's not still he took up he took out a big jet to cope and Haagen to preach about climate change while we're in danger of a huge fire down here because of all the vagrants that he allows to live in the brush not we'll talk about that and have a question for you but right now another story this popped up from the el Segundo times California brown dogle reporter that's the high speed rail row Florida BDN metrolink wants to divert billions of dollars from the high speed rail to build a semi high high speed rail link between Burbank in Anaheim five and a half billion dollars would have to come from the train project in the Central Valley is shifted down to southern California to build this rail line which we talked about before cannot be super high speed they claim they can get up to a hundred and twenty five miles an hour well that certain segments well the real high speed rail is it more like two twenty by the way right so it's a little over half the speed so this is half speed read it will be through the only from Burbank Anaheim it will be one twenty five they'll have to slow exacts that you'll be very busy corners also what's the average speed as a good place to be a lot less than one hundred when they're claiming again like as usual big ridership numbers in this thing five five billion yes it's five and a half to a debt that they would take from high speed rail that's more than a third of all the money they have a much of that's been spent to ready yes where are they getting this from they claim there's twenty and a half billion in funding for the bullet train to southern California in the bay area twenty and a half of where they get that number I think they use the twelve of the twelve billion bond measure another three billion from the federal government I think the rest they think it's going to come from the carbon tax the the cap and trade if you if you if you measure it out over years instant money right but that's a big hunk that they're gonna take for a a half speed train yes well remember the complaint and this is coming from a Democrat the assembly speaker Anthony Rendon once the money used in urban areas in again why did they even they should have done this right high speed rail but they did they play started in the Central Valley and there's always been a complaint about that that you're not gonna get ridership there is none of people there to justify all the money they're spending everybody in southern California is paying the taxes to pay off the bard money so so all the money they bart is gonna to the Central Valley rail project it's never coming down here so we're all paying well we're all paying back the bard money plus interest and what we get for down here so basically what they're saying John is this is the original plan they started in the Central Valley but we want to start building like the Burbank to Anaheim link it'll all be linked up eventually to this date white but it's going to be slow speed yeah it is in their train that goes from Burbank I believe met I believe yes I believe that so this will be what is it Sam track or somebody probably dies I don't know somehow maybe not I don't know how you did Burbank to Anaheim I know you can get from Union Station downtown Anaheim I think that's on Amtrak I don't know what would link you from bird because they had that stupid that arctic shell a big white shell across Mangels stadium yes and they expected that high speed rail was coming through there are never did and now only a few hundred people a day use that that use that terminal now it's about as was the train station but it it's there's this big white thing in the middle of a lighthearted a kia yeah I think they called the arctic the arctic K. R. T. I. C. and for something we heard about this a few months ago under this rough plan that we're just describing that hundred ninety miles at the building in the Central Valley it would be completed track of the install but it would be electrical system eighties diesel trains that's even slower speed so that would not be hice right real and then that wouldn't connect at all to that would theoretically free up five to six billion to invest so they're gonna spelled slow speed diesel trains but hearing up there and those things really political down here to be elected by weight regarding alleged all high speed rail studies with so we're getting electric they're getting diesel these tracks are going to connect none of it's going to be not yet because I still have to figure out how to get from the Central Valley down to say land but they never will and then down to Burbank they never well that that the mountains in the way no more money all right office is closed fire danger red flags power out all that coming up John again K..
