"Faith any said it's not only the faith of the person and this is what. I really wanna buy share this. It's the faith of the priests. It's the faith of the team. It's the face the faith of the church. This is why you know being part of the universal church an understanding that we all contribute to the building up of one another's faith and so if you're lacking in faith you can pray for more faith and then engage your spouse your loved ones to pray for an increase in faith because faith really is if that's built up and the demons see that you have strength. Your faith is strong in the lord. Jesus christ and you will not back down from that faith. We see this in the lives of the saints when they're attacked then the enemy will flee. He is defeated. Because if your faith is so strong in the lord jesus christ but then he will leave but the beauty is. We must realize that our fate is. We're surrounded by a community of faith. That's the beauty of the church. Were a family of faith. Is it not I don't want to invoke a negative here but the danger even within our faith community. We don't each other. Her with virtue with kindness would love. We may have disagreements on maybe some prudential things but when our tone doesn't reflect the virtue of christ then we're in trouble aren't we kathleen. Oh absolutely you know. We want to That's an the enemy comes in. He tries to divide and conquer and he does that quite efficiently. I'm afraid so And it has been a real problem in the church. We have to be honest about that And we need to acknowledge it and then act in holy daring. You spoke about the faith of abraham and in chapter. You know in the book. I talk about this. Holy daring and use abraham's faith as an example. You know the the lord shows us holy daring when he asks so great of an act of faith from abraham and then abraham shows is holy dairy when he's willing to give up his son as the father asked and of course we know he was spared that That gift of the sun. If you will but faith become so important and i think we need to be mindful that we are family of faith so that you know whether it's in our families or in our church communities or In the culture at large that we treat one another with respect and dignity that is due because the lord jesus christ you know has made us all in his image and likeness so again. I don't that's the the hard task really. Discipleship is Something we can't do alone. It's something that we engage our will but we also engage the help of the church the help of of our holy family the church triumphant. The saints the you know understanding that the end djelic world is all around us so were never really alone. Sometimes people will ask me. You traveled to all these different nations and people can bring my whole family with me or my husband with me so often. i'm alone but you know. Chris and i know you relate to this. We're never alone. Your guardian angel is with you. And i speak a little bit about angel allergy in the back of the book. Your angel is with you. The angelic world the saints. These are real spiritual dynamics that are present to us through. The eyes of faith will return to inside the pages and just a moment. U.S. cant meet Paris goals without federal leadership, researcher says

"I'm Dr Anthony Lewis, and this is climate connections. After president trump announced that the US will exit the Paris climate agreement many US states, cities and businesses stepped up with their own commitments to cut carbon pollution. Carla fresh with the Rocky Mountain Institute a nonprofit think tank. She's part of a team that's been crunching numbers to figure out what's really happening on the ground in the united. States on climate and figure out what's the impact of those actions so what does it really add up to? The researchers estimate that in ten years if the state cities and businesses fully implement their plans, us. Greenhouse gas emissions will be twenty five percent less than they were in two thousand five that significant. But to stay in line with the goals of the Paris climate agreement, the US needs to cut emissions by almost twice that. The researchers found that making those larger cuts in carbon pollution is still feasible but I says, it will require a nationwide commitment to transitioning to renewable energy and electric vehicles. Among other strategies, we have to have federal leadership and we have to have leadership from states and cities and businesses. So this is not an either or situation, but together, we can put on track to drastic emissions reductions.

Are we capable of that type of deeper thought in these days Anthony? I. Hope we are Bernard and benedict definitely were in all the saints we're going to be talking about all were, but it's something that we need to work to rediscover. Let me give you just a very practical thing because the this may sound very full hind pollutant bet is it's extremely practical today I. Think we live in a crisis of marriage. We're going to explore this crisis a little bit more with Saint held a guard for me for now let me just say that there are many many good and faithful Catholics who've been duped about their marriages and who are either contemplating divorce or contemplating annulments because their marriage has failed. And there are even priest and so forth who are seeing, what do we do a how do we handle the pastoral situation of so many failed marriages and and they think the annulment processes the right process to go. Now, there are probably people listening to us who are in situations that. Ought to be an old I'm sure they will work with their pastors to discern those things. But I don't think that all the failed marriages in our time are all something that were never valid to begin with I. Think many many times many marriages that are failing around us were very valid when they were entered into and remain valid now and to try do otherwise is to go against the truth go against what is and that is always extremely painful. A friend of mine who actually suffered through a divorce and a in somebody went to him. It was thinking about getting divorced too and and went him and said, my marriage is so painful. I seems like the only thing we can do right now the our love is failed. The only thing we can do is get divorced now that person who came to him that person was thinking in terms of feasability what can I do to alleviate the pain? and. That person was thinking in terms of what he could do to protect his life to protect his dignity so that he didn't have as much pain in his life. My my friend who had suffered through a divorce and whose heart had been crushed by the whole proceedings. He said well, when you get a divorce if you if you go that way, it is true that the weight that is on you the weight of sorrow the bear right now, the pain of that broken relationship you do take it off you and you put it on your children. And I think that is very sadly the case in our. In our culture today that a lot of people who are afraid of pain in our thinking in terms of feasability what I can I I don't think I can handle this anymore it's too much. What can I do to get out of it? They take the pain off themselves and they put it on their children. Do you see when we look we limit ourselves to the truth is See the truth that is we don't see reality and the reality is that pain is something that if we tried to escape or we foist onto others, it's just going to hurt someone else. So what do we do without pain? Only someone who sees the truth of what is Knows that they can take that pain and give it to Jesus, and that Jesus can do something very beautiful with it if you trust him. If you trust him. Anthony, do you think it's a part of our conditioning? The the way that we think that it's difficult for.

"And. When we re entering the conversation with God, it's not really like that. It's mediated by faith. he can obviously you know here and speak in audible ways, but it's mediated by faith, and this is part of how he's chosen. to to kind of you know lay out the path of redemption, so what that means is that we have to exercise our faith in order to enter into God's presence, and we have to learn to listen through faith. you know faith is the assurance of things that are hooked for the substance of things that are not feeling. So. We have so our prayer. Life is based and starts from faith which brings some difficulties that we you know that are not present in other relationships. and so we have to be aware of and kind of and be given some tools that can help us. Learn learn to to kind of keep going deeper in that relationship through faith, and that was one of the things that I hope that this series of books would offer. will return to inside the pages in just a moment. "Each one of the teachings that he does the admonishments he is, but also the things that he suffers for my sake. In each case he's revealing to me personally the love of the father if I'm approaching the scriptures, then as the way that Jesus speaks to me about the father's love. As I read the Scriptures instead of resting simply at the meaning of TAT's. I need to go from the meaning of the text to ask the question. What does this tell me about the heart of Jesus? The more I understand his heart, the more I know, the father. vom Baltasar says we are. Using language of Saint Paul. From the book of efficient, our effort is to understand the love that surpasses all understanding. What does it mean to understand to stand on, but A win? We know the truth about something were. that. On one hand purifies our judgment, the better our judgment, the more we can respond to what needs to be responded to. The more intensely we can live, we can live a fullness of life to the extent that we understand the truth. The truth is the ground of our existence without the truth, we lack that which compare the weight of our existence. The human person is such that he the specific weight of are being the love in our heart needs to be rooted in truth without that truth without understanding where risk our integrity is at risk, and Jesus knows that, and so that's why he reveals himself to the words in the events of the sacred scripture. This concludes part. Two of our conversation with Dr Anthony Lewis Discussing Hans von Balthasar. Christian, meditation. To learn.

Because as you know most of the members at that point were widows and the expectations for tertiary is under those environments Were stringent and. I think there was some resistance. Initially to her but again there is this something truly remarkable about Catherine. Her personality proved remarkably convincing To those that she encamp power of persuasion by her words but I think as much by her comportment. She was sixteen years old. When all of this was happening and yet she was able to convince people of great maturity and certainly people of great spiritual maturity That yes she was sober minded enough to do this but she was also prayerful enough and loved enough to do this return in just a moment to the doctors of the church the charismatic wisdom with Doctor Matthew Bunsen. "Or Anthony. Keith on say, Tony as Anthony Lewis and could be there at the other end for Louisville city of Luke Spencer in the box in its repelled a last ditch effort. I think that was Reynolds, getting getting a block in rather knows d Kwa, the DRC native Democratic Republic of the Congo. He got in lasted slide tackle inside of the six yard box, and did very well to keep Luke Spencer from probably would across it from that position. But nonetheless, very dangerous stuff here from either team early on. And it is just the fifth minute. Now I one of the game brought to you by corner barn restaurant, of course, going to be played by Oscar Menez to Finn, Lawson's left and a stoppage here from our Senate referee. And we'll see what this is all about. It's a friendly exchange in the box. Of course, pleasantries, greetings from everyone as now referee has gotten assorted comes in now it's blocked away, though. By the first defender, I ain't Lewis and it is going to be a another corner cake awarded by tonight's official. We'd oh Gonzalez junior. Yeah. Lou city, trying to flow near post with the ball was just a little too out in front, easy to defend these get another shot here, legal city of see. No stranger to squaring from set-pieces haven't done from a corner yet. Shouts for handballs. It's played in and nothing coming from Consol is still alive, though, and Lawson does well to not interfere with the cross coming in from the right side. It was Oscar Menez, because all the way over harmlessly going to go kick here. Six minutes still goal is from Louisville. Slugger field in this King's Cup rivalry match. Yeah. One thing to note, onset pieces for Lou city is the goalkeeper for Saint.

"The amount we would get a two dollar and thirty five cent discount each day. And I would sneak into the cafeteria before most kids were there or after my kids were there. So they didn't see me using this little kind of Mark of financial aid for the most part. It was a fantastic experience the quality education. There was phenomenal. I'm still close to some of my teachers and. By the time. I kind of outgrew, my adults and insecurity. It was it was hugely fun to be at school with my dad. I mean when I was thirteen I wouldn't go do it. But when I was sixty and seventy nine of free period. Why go hang out with my dad? I know a lot of sixteen seventeen year olds who would not react that way. Probably a testament to my dad more than me. Yeah. I'm I'm asking you this. This is a complete shot in the dark. But is that where David Brooks went as well? No, a lot of a lot David because he you know, he he, and I sort of a parallel has, but he lived in Stuyvesant town where I grew up for short time. And then, but then he went to private school and not the David's in my offices are next to each other. But I think he grew up in in New Jersey or Long Island. He did not he did not go to school in New York. Horace Mann has lots of of writers over the years who've gone there Anthony Lewis, my predecessor on the op-ed page went there, lots of other people, but not damn David came out here to the university of Chicago, actually, college, right? Yeah. Yeah. The. Part of the history of your parents what they were activists. They were antiwar activists. They were civil rights activists so much so that they appear where they pick the family up and went to Boston to too because Boston was that grand zero for the anti busing movement. And there was quite a bit of stress. There would tell me about that. So my parents met they were both involved in the anti Vietnam war movement. And actually they met in nineteen sixty seven because a friend of my dad, my dad said friend of his we gotta find someplace to watch the World Series. This is before everyone at TV's and my dad's friends had him while, you know, I know a woman who has a TV we can pretend we're stopping by say hi and watch game one of the World Series, which was Red Sox cart ride. Yeah. Fast world great World Series. Of course, the Red Sox lost as they always did. And until the last fifteen years, and then that woman had a friend over who is my mom. And so to some extent the Red Sox, thanks for my existence, and you became a Red Sox fan this. This is. Where I was going. This is I don't I can't describe how peculiar it is that a guy who grew up in New York, I know is a Red Sox fan, and it wasn't as peculiar it was miserable. Right. Growing up as a Red Sox fan in New York through the eighties when they lost that horrible World Series to the Mets even all the way up to two thousand and three with the Erin Boone home run. But so yes, as you said, we lived in New York, and then a my dad really remained quite active in these kind of leftist movements, even after the Vietnam war. And so he went up to Boston to be part of the movement, basically protecting the anti-racist movement to protect the African American kids who were getting bused to white communities, which was enormously. Controversial, right? And and not conducted that well by the government, right? It's a hugely complicated issue. So we moved up to Boston in seventy five and lived there for six years. But that was from when I was two eight, and that's sort of where I fell in love. Yeah. So you you there's a a confluence here between your love of baseball. And the fact that you became a math major. Yes. So I basically so those years in Boston loved baseball, my favorite thing. Every morning was the Boston Globe sports page and open it to that page notice..
