"We'll return to Beginning to Free AMP Where you can find all your favorite Discerning Hearts programming. They're all available on the free Discerning Hearts app. Over 3 000 Spiritual Formation programs and prayers all available to you with no hidden fees or subscriptions. O God, who through your Spirit raised up St. Teresa of Jesus to show the Church the way to seek perfection, grant that we may always be nourished by the food of her heavenly teaching and fired with longing for true holiness, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. St. Teresa, pray for us, that we may become worthy of the promises of Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen. We now return to Beginning to Pray with Dr. Anthony Lewis. In what you've just said, Anthony, and I'm sure we'll be speaking about this more in the future, it should be of a special note that once again Teresa is very practical and she will help us to be aware of those opportunities that we can take to foster that availability. One of those that she puts a lot of emphasis on, I think she mentions it over maybe three or four chapters, the importance of the Eucharist and having that time to be able to receive and to rest. Would you say that's an important thing for us to be aware of? Yes. After she talks about your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, she begins commentary on give us this day our daily bread and this kind of prayer, this contemplative prayer that God wants to begin in us, it's impossible to nurture it or for it to reach maturity if we don't feed it. And the Eucharist, this daily bread, Jesus, the bread of life, is what feeds this kind of prayer in us. We are able to wander over and be struck by and captivated by the will of God in our lives if we feed this kind of prayer. And this kind of prayer can feed us, she doesn't say this exactly, but this is from John Paul II, this kind of prayer can feed us in three ways. It feeds us because the Eucharist is a sacrifice, so when we go to mass and we offer that sacrifice, that sacrifice is transforming in our lives and transforming in the world because in that sacrifice, the Father's will is manifest and being accomplished. And so that's something that feeds this kind of prayer because the reality of what this prayer sees is the reality that is realized every time we go to mass. All our heartbreaks and disappointments and deepest desires are placed on the altar and through the ministry of the priest joined to the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and the world is transformed in that, it doesn't get better than that. It's also true too though that this sacrament is a sacrament of communion, meaning when at mass we receive Holy Communion, it strengthens this kind of prayer, it actually provides food for this prayer because just as this prayer is a deeper communion with the will of the Father, every time we receive communion, it's Jesus's, what we're receiving is Jesus's total surrender to the Father. We're eating on that, we're feeding on that, that's nourishing us when we go to communion. So it strengthens this kind of prayer, it makes this prayer stronger, gives this prayer the nourishment it needs so that what has begun in us can reach maturity. There's a final dimension of this prayer and probably the most fitting part of this prayer that St. Teresa is talking about and that is this Eucharistic bread of Jesus that feeds us, that is our sacrifice, is also his presence in the world.

"The journey to Christ is not a easy simple one-two journey I mean he gives you consolations he encourages you on the way he abandoned you but it takes a lot of determination and perseverance so first you got to master yourself kind of learn to discipline yourself then you got to persevere and be determined to make it to the water and then on your way to the water all along the way from the very beginning as you're making progress and then you're almost at the water you're confronted with enemies of the spiritual life that try to discourage you try to make you turn back and some people are almost at the water they've overcome the horse they've traveled the great distance they're almost at the water and they get so discouraged by the enemy that they turn back and they're just a couple steps from the water how do we persevere how do we tame this horse cross the desert and get to the water and not be discouraged by our enemy so that we can finally find this water that will quench our thirst this living water that is Christ's spiritual water she said the reason why this water doesn't extinguish the fire is because it's spiritual water only spiritual water can make spiritual fire burn the more and so we need the spiritual water but we have a lot to overcome between with the wild horse the great distance and the enemy who's trying to stand between us in the water and she wants to in these chapters kind of paint a way for us to go forward so for those of you who've tried Ignatian exercises and they just didn't work for you because you just couldn't couldn't be disciplined enough about putting yourself in what Saint Ignatius invites you into and your poor spiritual director during the exercise just said you know I don't know what to do with you realize that Teresa of Avila she had sisters just like you and this work was written just for you it's a work written for souls that have to tame the horse cross the desert and confront enemies so that you can get your thirst quenched beautiful you know I couldn't help it while you're going through that I was remembering Elizabeth of the Trinity in heaven and faith where she just very simply says remain in me just remember remain in me I mean she'll focus on that don't think that you're alone that I'm right here she's reminding us and she says don't forget I'm with you because of your baptism I am in you remain with me and so that it would help don't despair keep persevering go for it good that's quite beautiful and I think that's a powerful connection to make Elizabeth of the Trinity of course was very influenced by Teresa of Avila and this work way of perfection in particular it would make sense that some of the doctrine that we find in Elizabeth of the Trinity would be an echo of these ideas put forth by Saint Teresa of Avila indeed we do need to remain in him we do need to persevere and be determined and that God is going to honor our perseverance and determination if we don't give up but it requires constant effort on our part the effort of faith the effort to believe even in the face of our own weakness and our voids and our inadequacies even if we're trying to get back on that wild horse we've got to believe in the greatness of God's love and that he's going to help us get through this desert to quench our thirst if we will trust in him you've been listening to beginning to pray with Dr. Anthony Lewis to hear and or to download this conversation along with many others go to discerninghearts.com this has been a production of discerning hearts i'm your host Chris McGregor we hope that if this has been helpful for you that you will first pray for our mission and if you feel us worthy consider a charitable donation which is fully tax deductible to support our efforts most of all we pray that you will tell a friend about discerninghearts.com and join us next time for beginning to pray with Dr.

"O God, who through your Spirit raised up Saint Teresa of Jesus to show the Church the way to seek perfection, grant that we may always be nourished by the food of her heavenly teaching and fired with longing for true holiness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. We now return to Beginning to Pray with Dr. Anthony Lewis. She goes on in her life to describe a final kind of water for the soul that is a very important image of prayer and it's a kind of water that comes when you are more perfectly united to God in a kind of a transforming union or it's a unit of prayer. This spark represents what we call in God in you. It's not so much your efforts anymore. It's something that God is able to produce in you because you've made space for Him to produce it and it starts out as a little spark but then it can become a candle flame, a single little flame and that little flame lights things up. It's kind of illuminative. Your spiritual life is kind of proficient as this flame is blown. This is where she uses this little flame to describe what's going on with the sleep of the faculties. The spark, your spirit begins to rest more. This little flame, the sleep of the faculties are so absorbed in the presence of God you're not even able really to think. Spiritual exercises, meditation so forth become more difficult for you because you're so captivated by the presence of God and His beauty in your life. This flame gives way to a kind of fire, a bonfire you might say that burns in your heart. Elizabeth of the Trinity would say a furnace of love that is ignited in you and it doesn't go away and not only does it give up off light like the candle would but more light and it also gives off warmth, the warmth of charity, the warmth of holy friendship. This unitive mystical way of prayer that God wants all of us to enjoy, not all of us come to enjoy it and most of us resist it for various reasons but when we receive the gift of this, when we say yes to it, it enlightens and warms up the whole world and it's this where Teresa of Avila wants to lead her sisters because if they can become light and warmth in the heart of the church it will give the preachers and the teachers the confidence and the trust in God. They present the truth and that's what will win the hearts of people who maybe are lost right now and don't have an answer. This last water she describes then with the bonfire is rain, a rainfall and a gentle rainfall waters the flowers much better than all the buckets of water that you pulled up before. The virtues explode under this and in this work starting in this she begins to talk about this relationship, this curious relationship that she brought up in her life. Now she's going to explore it a little bit more. The relationship between this water and fire. What is this water that it doesn't quench the fire and what is this fire that burns the brighter as this water inundates the soul. What is this curious relationship and in 19 she she kind of says well the water is your desire for God and the fire is his love burning in you. The more you desire him the more this fire will burn.

"But the other thing the Pope said that I think is another kind of riches that we need to be able to give up so that we can enter into love is the riches that we have in terms of making commitments in our lives. You know, when we vow ourselves to each other in marriage, when we promise ourselves to each other in marriage, those sacred bonds mean that we need to say no to other relationships in our lives, and we even need to say no to entertaining the possibility of other relationships in our lives. We need to make that renunciation deep in our heart. As long as we cling to those other possibilities, we are clinging to a kind of riches, and we are not poor. If we want to follow our crucified master, Jesus, who made himself poor for our sake, we need to let go of possibilities that don't belong to us anymore, so that we can say yes to the poverty that makes us vulnerable to the providence of God.Thank you so much, Anthony. Thank you, Chris. God bless you. You've been listening to Beginning to Pray with Dr. Anthony Lewis. "There's also a real spirit of aggression and anger in them. And I'm thinking in particular, there's a lot going on with the whole feminist movement and the way men are regarded in film and book and theater right now is a not very many artists right now are seeing the goodness of fathers and men. Instead they're celebrating they celebrate their failures and depict them as weak and pathetic and I think we need to look at why is that so entertaining to us? Why is it so entertaining to us that we have our daughters on billboards has sex objects? Why is that entertaining to us? There's something really really kind of violent and vile about that. We should recognize whether it's on a ride home in the privacy of our computer screen or in a movie we paid to go to when there's something vile or uncouth or unchaste or violent, we need to be able to name identify what that is. And in identifying what that is, you know, kind of disassociates renounce it. I don't want this to be part of my life. And we might continue to struggle for it, but as long as we're struggling, as long as we're going to confession, that irrationality loses its power over us. But when we don't recognize it, when we somehow think it's okay because everybody else is doing it. And we let ourselves get caught up into it. Irrationality, colors the whole way we relate to life. And we lose the fullness of joy that otherwise should be ours. Anthony, I wish we had more time to continue our conversation on this, but I just want to encourage folks to pick up a copy of hidden mountain secret garden, a theological contemplation on prayer. There's so much more there at any final thoughts, Anthony. Well, I really appreciated this interview. And I guess the final thing, you know, some people think that make two mistakes whenever we talk about irrational spirits. Some people don't want to talk about it at all. And some people like to talk about it too much. They sensationalize it. I think as we look at the irrationality in our culture and in our society and even in our families and our private life, as we look at we don't want to sensationalize it, we also don't want to ignore it. We want to be kind of sober about it and submit it to the cross of Christ, and when we do that, there is freedom, because as you do that, you see the truth and the truth is what sets us free. And I think so many of our brothers and sisters, so many of us, the lord would have us live in a greater freedom than we currently do. And that greatest greater freedom comes through this kind of sober confrontation of irrationality with the truth that you were speaking about Chris. And thank you for the opportunity to address that. Thank you so much, doctor Anthony Lewis.

"My goodness i mean i still. I still feel like i would like to take three day. Retreat to just absorb everything that this meant. All of our children were there. All of our grandchildren were there and to the little boys and i'm sure others thought of it tuba. Two of them just were in offing. He really is a priest. Now you know taking it in and watching his every move and then of course we have the privilege of going to his first mass and they watched as he gave his special gifts to scott me at the end up that i mess He gave me the mandatory him. Which is the special cloth that he used to wipe his hands right after the bishop consecrated them and the he gave his. I stole that. He listened to the first confessions After he'd been ordained and it was like There's just so much that we will be able to pick up and share and highlight with our grandchildren as we continue to reflect for years to come on what this meant And here was a special thing you know it a year ago was jeremiah's father jeremiah. Now his ordination to the jacket and they're all kinds of limitations you. We couldn't have a reception afterwards. I mean just so many. Somebody sad consequences to cope for manly but one of the beautiful things was two grandchildren. Who were unable to pursue communes because of covid Were their parents. Were able to arrange with our bishop and their pastures back home to receive their first communion at his deactivate own nation and it was so precious. There wasn't huge fanfare. We just did a little family celebrating at home but they were dressed beautifully and they knew what was happening they were well prepared and jeremiah Then deacon jeremiah was able to be the one to give them newcrest and our second son. Joseph who studying for the priesthood with the one holding the patent and the beauty of all of this term is so powerful and of course when father jeremiah was ordained the children were again talking about their first communion the year before. And how excited they were to then be able to receive our lord from now father jeremiah. And now they're eagerly anticipating at joseph the hacking ordination next year So it again. That's you know that you've got the teaching. That's very clear about what the eucharist is. And it's in the context of the joy of family. Life when i love so much about what you present here is the openness to the great whatever and i mean that in the sense of our lady saying to us do whatever he tells you and then that openness it's these types of moments and seeing his presence and i and i mean that the very strong grace moment his presence in this particular moment. No it's not the first communion they planned but look at the gift that he has for us and i think we all have those opportunities every day. It's rowing learning to see it. Isn't it yes yes it is. And and part of that is really that opening act of consecration of the day. You know There are a lot of different forms. We have one that our family has memorized and to just give to sort of sum up the day before. It's even started really and give him all of our joys are works are suffering are challenges and placing them in his care and saying at the outset at the day. Jesus i trust in you and really opening the eyes of our heart than to see him at work And and we'll be surprised you know by the things that come about. I have to tell you one story. I would now gardening with my joseph when he was five and all we're doing is pulling weeds. Just not a big deal But all of a sudden he looked at me and he said. I've got to make a time machine. I really be sounded quite determined. Where would you go. And he said. I got to get back to the garden of eden. I have to tell at. Don't do it worth it. All he meant was the weeds about the senate the fall and all of that but it was. It was such a great then opportunity to bend talk about what did happen in the garden. And isn't it sad. The consequence of adamson and there are consequences to our sins. "The sacrament of confirmation is the relationship of the holy spirit the holy spirit is someone. He is transforming me. I may worship and glorify and adore. The father is our whole relationship is with god and he with us. He speaks to me. That's what happens in relationship and high to him he gives to me. Receive me the greatest gift. He gives me his himself. And i give myself to him and now we're one he in us we in him. And there's a transformation is all relational. The sacrament of the eucharist doesn't make any sense but yet i really believe that people can go to mass and receive something that the host is something that the on the altar they can be there. Baptized confirmed christians. And not see someone. The eucharist is someone what i have when i go before the eucharist and they'd tabernacle or in the monstrance when i kneel before him i'm in relationship with some one he and me i in him which in a living way i believe. Believe play all those who are married in christ have a relationship with one another in him as christ lives. In each other to baptized christians entering into this sacra marriage you are a tabernacle you are christ to one another the magnificence of the the gift of sacrament that you have a limit and relationship with christ in one another as husband and wife. What a magnificent. Living out of the marriage vocation as i am living out the magnificence of my ordination and so the the calling of the church to be christ to the world and to proclaim christ world and the greatest proclamation is to allow ourselves to be radiating through us to the whole world. Who has you're speaking of that. I was thinking of that beautiful example the gift of priscilla aquilla in the acts of the apostles and how they as a married couple were such great friends such great support for saint paul in his ministry and they had to run a business. They had to take care of family and the community and yet they were able to go out and live that bet. Tis mold gift of proclamation to the world and they would be eventually martyred in the church like saint. Paul they were aware of their transformation in christ the magnificence of the accidentally apostles the reading this first history book of the church is putting before the eyes of the members of the church. The words here are those who were ordinary disciples and members of jesus but they were external to him now through the power of the holy spirit. They have become one with him in his body and they were aware of that. They were one body with christ at magnificent transformation. Paul when paul get struck off his horse and he's asked. Paul paul why are you persecuting me to persecute. Christians is to persecute me. I m in them. They are in may. That message went out to bed. Early church couldn't use. See what would happen to the entire world. If we became aware that we are christ than i am no longer i but christ lives in me as paul says in the second chapter of relations verse twenty. I live no no longer awry but christ lives in me that the one who speaks the one who acts is no longer i but it's christ through me and with me and in me this new pentecost would hit the world like fire that this whole world would be so transformed overnight if each toss could come again to recognize who i am in the world and the church today. Isn't that one of the reasons why some clothes himselves off from that and are very comfortable with the idea that it's something that i received and not someone because wow that you're talking about what if that someone asked me to give up everything and follow him. I i like my stuff. I don't wanna give up everything the attachment that i have to the self. You see the very era. There are all kinds of capital sins but the the deepest one is pride and they all true with which i worship In my in my deepest self is not christ. Who is in me but myself. And that's the tension that daily. And hourly i'm either choosing what god wants me to do the will of the father or i want to do and so i choose and so if i hard my heart so from now on even though i'm baptize confirmed christian or even ordain. I can do what i want to do and now with father wants me to do because cheeses does the will of father and that jesus who is in me gives me the power to always do the will of the father but i can and he always wants to give us that freedom maintain to do what i want to do even though externally i'm baptized confirmed christian. Not doing what. He wants me to what i want to. And i wish to at the throne and the altar of myself i myself and me and that one self centeredness is really where the division comes between me and god and me and my husband and me and my neighbor and me and the world and is late myself because this is what i choose to. Yeah we we have that choice. Return to building the kingdom of love with monsignor. John just a moment. U.S. cant meet Paris goals without federal leadership, researcher says

"I'm Dr Anthony Lewis, and this is climate connections. After president trump announced that the US will exit the Paris climate agreement many US states, cities and businesses stepped up with their own commitments to cut carbon pollution. Carla fresh with the Rocky Mountain Institute a nonprofit think tank. She's part of a team that's been crunching numbers to figure out what's really happening on the ground in the united. States on climate and figure out what's the impact of those actions so what does it really add up to? The researchers estimate that in ten years if the state cities and businesses fully implement their plans, us. Greenhouse gas emissions will be twenty five percent less than they were in two thousand five that significant. But to stay in line with the goals of the Paris climate agreement, the US needs to cut emissions by almost twice that. The researchers found that making those larger cuts in carbon pollution is still feasible but I says, it will require a nationwide commitment to transitioning to renewable energy and electric vehicles. Among other strategies, we have to have federal leadership and we have to have leadership from states and cities and businesses. So this is not an either or situation, but together, we can put on track to drastic emissions reductions.
