"CL and S 50 to get the bonus and get into the action. Bet online where the game starts. Be willing to go over 8 and a half, I think. I think they'll get to 9 wins, but it's a little early for prognostication. But I feel like that is a pretty good number for patriots fans if you're optimistic. And also, how about the Red Sox? What? 6 straight series they've won. If they just had a bullpen, Greg, if they just had a better, more consistent bullpen and maybe how it's going to be that closer maybe now, but you go back and you look at that back end of the bullpen. How many blown saves? How many close games could easily be even better right now? It's infuriating. All right, let's get to the Patriots 56. Let's start with the edge and the end position. I don't know if you have too many surprises. Maybe you have one surprise having to do with Anthony Jennings, but kind of go through that and what your thoughts are about edge and end. Okay, so on my previous version, I had released Henry Anderson. Because I just didn't have enough spots, but now with the 56 man roster, he's one of the guys that I'm going to keep on the roster because they really don't have a backup to Dietrich wise on what he does in terms of sort of base and opposite Matthew judon long guy can play the run. They don't have many. And Anderson plays the run well, they don't have many guys who do that. So Anderson is on Anthony Jennings is a guy that we're still trying to figure out and I think the Patriots are. Like, where does he fit? We've seen him at end. We've seen him at linebacker, like they have a lot of linebackers. At the end of the day, I just don't see a spot on the roster for him. And even when you move over to tackle, I don't think there are a lot of surprises. I mean, I kept guy God Chao, barmore and Carl Davis. Now, could Carl Davis or ecole who I think did I see a report that he's going to be suspended for a game or two? Yes. For PEDs. So he might be not long for this roster, but I don't think with the way the Patriots are playing, the way they look like they're playing in camp, they're going to have one and base defense. They're going to have one stand up guy, so that's judean. Then they're going to have two interior guys to start that's guy in God zhao. And then they're going to have an end like Dietrich wise, Henry Anderson. They're not going to have a quote unquote outside linebacker. I think they're going to go with a four man line like that. Probably two or three linebackers. Beyond that. And then, of course, the safeties get into that mix. But I don't think there are any huge surprises up front. The linebacker is a place.

"So let's keep an eye on train Nixon and how he continues to long. All right, let's look at the, I guess, defense. Let's go defense here. So on the edge and I think I've sort of switched this a few times because basically what they're running is they're running for their base. They're running three defensive linemen plus an edge guy. So you're talking a nose tackle, a defensive tackle, and then a defensive end, almost like a tweener guy, like a Dietrich wise, Henry Anderson at the other end. And then you have like Matthew judon at edge. So on edge slash end, I have judon wise uche and Perkins. I have cut Henry Anderson and Anthony Jennings. Now, looking at many camp, you would say those two guys are on the roster. Good luck finding spots for both of those guys. On the interior, I have guy Godzilla barmore. Those three are almost givens, and then Carl Davis. You know, do you let go of a Carl Davis who's really the only God back up there and keep somebody else on the edge, you know, I don't know. Off the ball linebacker, this is going to be a tough group because this group, along with the cornerbacks, they are basically Nick, when you watch practice, it's basically like, you know, like one of those bingo games where they're just like, you know, they have a bunch of ping Pong balls and a thing. And they're just picking them out, and you say, you don't know. To me, there's no rhyme or reason. And you could tell that they like all of these guys in some respect. Now, at the end of the day, for the 53 man roster, who do they like the most, but I have Bentley, McMillan, who I would say, right now you would say those are the two starters. Then you have camera grown in Mac Wilson Mack Williams..

"Joined as always by Alex barth and today we are going to take your questions. You set the agenda. So go right ahead and drop all your questions into the chat and we'll get to as many as we possibly can over the next hour. So as we let people trickle in and as we get these questions rolling, Alex, I wanted to start with the Patriots linebacker room and I was going to start with the Gerard Mayo appearance on the podcast patriots past podcast this morning, but actually we just got a little bit of news that added it's now official that Kyle van noy is going to the Los Angeles chargers. Patriots obviously cut Kyle van noy never seemed like they had any sort of inclination whatsoever to bring him back to after the draft. But this, I would say from Matt gro from Gerard Mayo this morning on the Patriots pass pod and railing from everything that you hear, the internal hype train for guys like Cameron McGraw, I would say raekwon McMillan is high on that list. Ronnie Perkins is continuing to show itself and now van noy is no longer an option. Maybe they still bring back a guy like Dante Hightower, but it sounds like from every level of the organization, the coaching level, the personnel level, got the Patriots would like to get younger and like to give these kids a chance to play next season. Yeah, and you know what a certain point they drafted all the, they kept drafting these guys on the edge from Anthony Jennings, Joshua, why am I blanking on Ronnie Perkins? Obviously, chase winovich is in here anymore, but you keep drafting these guys. If you don't play them, they'll never develop they'll never become better players. I think that was part of the issue what happened with winovich. These guys eventually have to get on the field and now they're going to give them that chance. Kyle van noy's cap hit was relatively unreasonable for what they were going to ask him to do, I'm not surprised they didn't re reach out to him, right? You figure if there was another deal to be had, they would have just reworked his previous contract instead of releasing him out, right? So not very surprised by this. I'm surprised the mathy coach out there can recognize the value and a player like Kyle van noy, but that's pretty much the extent of it. So it's spinning it forward for the Patriots out of this group and I guess it is kind of two separate groups because you have the on ball linebackers of the outside linebackers. Guys like uche and Perkins, I would say are more in that category, whereas the off ball guys like McGraw and McMillan are kind of in a separate category. Those guys are not going to play edge rushers roles like Kyle van noy played for the Patriots for most of the time. Last year and in 2019 when he's with the Pats. So which one of these guys though, I guess we can start with that edge group? We can split them up or you can just give me one name in general. Do you have the highest hopes for? Which is the guy out of this group that you feel like has the best chance to make a real impact. So I guess Joshua is probably like the generic player. We've seen him pop and camp a couple times. I'll say this and people are going to roll their eyes at me for this and call me a patriots Homer and a Bobo or whatever. If Anthony Jennings is healthy, I think he can really do something. I really believe that..

"Too fancy with it. There was a blade Duggar made in zone coverage. That was very, very good. That just kind of as that lurker in the middle of the field. That's where I, I continuously say, that's where I want to see it, right? That's where I want to see him play is in that zone. Coverage role is sort of a robber in the middle of the field instead of in man coverage, but they seemed really dead set on making him Patrick junk and making him cover Titans and man. So that's what he's going to continue to do. I guess each other things about the defensive side of the ball that I would say. Stood out for the Patriots. I do think it's an interesting conversation to have about Chase. Winovich. I wouldn't say he's done anything necessarily totally normal. About our amazing or anything like that. Flashy I practice yet, but that's certainly a spot. That is very, very difficult to come in late June game because you have judon. He's a stud you have. Who's looks like he could be a stud. You have Kyle Van Noy is a very good fit in the system and knows what he's doing. And then you also have guys like Anthony Jennings or DeSean Bower who's at an okay camp at times. There's there's a lot of bodies at that edge position and now Chase winovich is thrown into the fire. He's already behind. So I'm interested to see what happens with him. It looks to me, like he's a, we're just watching him out there at practice. He's aware of of the uphill battle. He sort of has ahead of him right now. Yeah, I think so. I mean, that group as a whole is just so loaded. I I think his best chances. How rotational do they want to be with that group. Right? And I've, I've talked about this before, where the more, you can rotate those guys in and out and kind of pick your spots where you use them, the better, it makes everybody cuz they're fresher. So, how deep do they want that rotation to go? I think that's what it comes down to forgave him. And if they want, you know, how much do they want? Matt? Judon a call Vin we playing. Cuz I think those are going to be the to, you know, guys with ice usage. Do they want to, you know, sixty-five seventy percent of them close at 80% and it's it's tough to say right now and that may very game to game but I think that, you know, that's a question. It's a good question. It's a question. We can't answer obviously until the season starts, but that question is going to kind of dictate some of those guys further down on the depth chart. So the other thing I'll mention just really quickly somebody in the chat about Chase winovich saying they should play inside linebacker. It's only been a couple of practices and she's been back but no end game. Linebacker reps, right? See that's, that's a bummer. Yeah, all Edge, but I also want to talk about the kicker's here really quickly. Interesting development going on with the kicker's continuously. I think at this point going or Dean's been solid? He hit, I believe faltering kicks here. Today. There was a, a third kick that was a little bit unclear..

"I would say in terms of just going from a 4-3 defense and in Oklahoma with his hand, in the dirt to a stand-up outside linebacker, I have noticed a few good reps against some of these backup tackles Korey, Cunningham, yodny cajuste. You know, guys like that have had tough gig jumps. So I think we're all expecting Ronnie Perkins to be sort of, if he's not a red shirt, maybe he plays a little bit in the kicking game. I think it's similar to Anthony Jennings for a PCM, maybe a little bit, any kind of wait and see in your to whether you can bring to the table. But is there anything that you have seen from Ronnie Perkins? That makes you say that he can contribute right away as a rookie or you kind of in my life that maybe we're going to see a slow slow roll here with Ron. Maybe late in the year, maybe late in the year. He comes along, he seems to be, you know, a very engaged learner, right? You mentioned hit him gravitating towards Matthew judon him speaking, with Tedy, Bruschi that kind of thing. So if you can learn quit. Yeah I think they can get them in. I'm very impressed with just how quick he gets off the line of scrimmage his initial burst but he is does seem like more of a project player. That being said, if he's going to contribute this here I think it's going to be on a special teams, get special teams experience in Oklahoma. We've seen him out there, you know, getting some special teams reps so far this summer. So that's maybe where we see him right away. But again, he he does strike me as a guy who who seems like he can pick things up relatively quickly. So, you know, a couple of guys get banged up as as is what happens over the course of the NFL season, maybe get to November and he gets his chance and he runs with it, so I am not expecting him, you know, in the first month or two, but he, he's not, I'm not totally writing him off this year either. Yeah, he's got some nice block, recognition, two and two against the Run working against the scout-team offense. You've seen those mome Is where he recognizes the polar or he sees that outside step further outside zone or he's just able to kind of anticipate those types of blocking schemes a little bit. He's very instinctive player and we song Oklahoma and that's why he was around the ball so much for the Oklahoma defense as he's got great instincts. And the guy, you know, this kind of gravity towards the football which I really like to see out of a player at that position. I do think that standing up on your feet and being on your feet and playing a little bit more in space and playing a little bit further. Outside the formation. That is a big transition for a lot of guys now, Chase winovich was able to do it almost instantaneously his rookie season and he was able to go from a 4-3 and in Michigan system to a 3-4 outside linebacker in the Patriot system pretty easily off. The only thing. I like about Ronnie Perkins is that he's going to play 3-4 outside linebacker at 2:55. Maybe I would guess is probably where they would like him to play at..

"But for now where they are right now, I think it's a John who's clearly the starter they're paying off. Lunch money. I think the big X Factor in this whole thing is Devin asiasi and he would make sense as sort of the number three tight-end wage but I I don't see them and look they could cut them tomorrow. I don't see them letting go of Matt lacosse anytime soon for injury issues for that reason. Because God forbid Johnny Smith and or a hunter Henry found in both of them don't have great injury histories including Henry and all of a sudden you're back starting Devin asiasi again if you don't have Matt lacosse. So I assume who's a you know, a solid job professional tight and he's a great veteran backup type of guy. And so I see him going to Camp then we'll see. And I think Devin asiasi oil you know I think there's a few players in this category Assi Assi. Winovich, maybe Anthony Jennings. Maybe even so many Michelle will get into in a couple of minutes log. I think there are guys in this team who it's like, it's like Last Chance Corral for these guys with the Patriots. And that Devin asiasi, who was a guy who came in looked really good initially and track Camp, then just completely disappeared until the end of the season. And we talked about it, the whole season what was going on behind the scenes, which is, you know, NFL could be tough for rookies wage. And if you're not ready for it, if you're not willing to fight back and and stand up for yourself and and assert yourself, you're going to get run over. Yeah. And I think Assi Assi really struggled last year, as a pro maybe by the end of the season, it turned around. Hopefully he that touchdown pass to. The end of the year was a trampoline into this year. And all of a sudden we see a confident guy who's ready to go win a job, who are mentally tough? All those things, I got a feeling the Patriot to really go to test him, just training camp to see where he's at. And if he cracks again, I think it's over for him. I think they look to dump him, dead. Take whatever fifty cents on the dollar and go with Smith. Henry Lacoste maybe adult and Keen depending on where he's at but I think that's the situation they're dead. Yeah. And I'm just as a general rule, not just with the Patriots but I think across the league I'm not ready to write off any second-year player..

"He's not a big overpowering guy at the line of scrimmage and then in the backfield. You know, you lose two great ones. But you've got ninety Harris. Who's kind of waited his turn to be the feature back at Brian Robinson, and too big physical bags. They've got good ones coming into summer that they recruited so offense. I I don't think there's any problem certainly quarterback death is different than it was last year with Jalen hurts moving onto Norman, Oklahoma. But you know, MAC Joe's played well. And I think he I said this on the air not only was that good for him. I think it was even better for his teammates to see him for the second year in a row play well in the spring and just kind of send a message look to our guy. We hope he stays healthy all year, we can do great things with him. But if I'm made to play I can run this offense and make some things happen. So offensively they've got what they need. And I would say the same thing defensively they lost great players. But when you have stars returning at each level your defense, which they have you know, they're in good shape. Ray Kwan Davis, Anthony Jennings. You know on the line of scrimmage you've got Dylan Moses at linebacker. You've got exa- Xavier McKinney and return Trayvon digs in the secondary Patrick's can I thought? Better as a year went on. I think he's going to be a star. So, you know, I think they're in really really good shape. All. Todd. You played on championship teams, you understand the mindset, but it seems like Alabama after going fourteen and no and getting the feet in championship game that that saving another tried to come up with this different mentality being around there with a lot of new coaches, what did you pick up just from from an attitudinal standpoint for the crimson tide? Yeah. I think that there was a sense that you know, we kind of got away from a few things that that maybe in our preparation, and and we were winning games so handily, and it's always harder to make corrections to really bear down on on demento things when you're winning and winning handily. And you know, that's why here Nick Sabin say something that you know, to the average Alabama fan might sound crazy when he says we might have been better off taking the loss at some point before that championship game. Because so that stuff when it got corrected, and and and that's not just coach speak. I mean, it's it's hard to get eighteen nineteen twenty year olds attention all the time to really hone in on your preparation when you're winning games by twenty plus points. And so, you know, I think that that got their attention, obviously, getting your butt whipped will do that..

"Stop shuttled it to ET n Anthony Jennings whiffed on the tackle made it twenty eight to sixteen ET and the third player with three touchdowns in a game against a Nick Sabin Alabama team in the first in more than five years. Twenty six touchdowns from scrimmage this season for the most in the F B S Alabama gets the ball back to is sacked. They recover that. He recovers the fumble Alabama. Does they punt it after the Mullen sack? Clemson comes back down the field ban. Again, talking about self inflicted stuff. I don't know if it would have mattered much. Clemson was moving the ball. But Bama flayed head out of bounds. Had an offsides as well. Feel goal. Makes it thirty one sixteen and then bam of Ivan three time a helps left forty five seconds left. And they just go into locker room down fifteen and there was. Almost a point of it was different watching it there than it was on TV but Nick Sabin and his mannerisms. There was no bombastic nature to him. It was almost a feeling of resignation like they're just better tonight. And we're just going to go into the locker room. See if we can figure this thing out. Yeah. Obviously he had seen as defense could not stop them. And I think he wanted to get into the locker room and try to figure that out and don't forget met Alabama was getting the second half kickoff. So he had that in his back pocket. But I. You know, you're watching the clock and that may have been the only. Clemson of not fumble. But just the fact that Daboh had to spend all three time outs before they could've used a couple there, and maybe tacked on one more score and didn't have them. That was the only. You know, I don't know if you'd call it era. But the thing that they didn't do. Well last night. Brad we're so used to seeing an Alabama team. Just go right down the field, thirty seconds less than a minute doing that. And then just like, you know, what we're just gonna pack it in here. Just get a plan for the second half and hope for the best. I think would that speaks to is first of all a lot of respect for the Clemson defense. And that it was unlikely that they were going to be able to put together that drive and also a lack of confidence in the kicker, which is you figure what that time left. Your best case scenario is probably getting into field goal range and maybe getting three, but I think saving probably felt like at that point against that type of defense. There was maybe a better chance of turning the ball over. Then there was actually getting three points out of it. And because of that he probably felt like the smart thing to do is just wait get the ball to start the second half. And see if they could maybe cut the lead in half in the first few minutes of third quarter time of possession was incredible. Clemson had the ball for ten and a half. Bama had the ball for nineteen and a half. And Clemson was outgained one. Oh, wait to twenty seven on the ground. I mean that's stance. I guess are for losers. Sorry, brad. Point here atom, but the numbers did not tell what was happening there in that. I haven't obviously the two picks a big part of that. Right. Yeah. The possessions. That's always a big part of time of possession. How many possessions, and you know, by by having the pick six Alabama had the ball just a more than Clemson did. But it is amazing. I think especially for coaches who grew up in the stop the run run the ball era. You can have such a poor running attack and or just an ineffective on I should say. And and that was the case at times this year guys I saw Clemson against Boston College, and they didn't run the ball pretty well. A very well. And that game and even though Travis had a terrific year. Overall. I think you're just seeing the game transition so much more when you have a quarterback. And let's talk about the clubs and receivers. I mean, Justin Ross is also a true freshman, by the way, he has to be Clemson two years just like Trevor Lawrence does. And it just. Amazing to think how how well these guys are performing at a young age..

"Holly rolling that sentence. Big sequence in this game on fourth and six for Alabama. Clemson twenty two trailing thirty one to sixteen Alabama line up is up to kick a forty yard field by Joseph boulevard. Was ready for a lot of guys not lined up right on the line of scrimmage and Matt Jones the holder picked it up ran to the right following the ticker boulevards. And I'll pick me dropped them for two yard loss. Eerily similar to the SEC championship game. When Georgia went very fake punt against a safe defense. It didn't for anybody in Alabama kind of backfired on Alabama on that way. The twenty five yard field goal earlier. But he missed the point off the right upright and very nearly missed another one. Nick Sabin decided not to try the forty yard Bill goal. Thirteen out of seventeen the year on first down. He kept the ball designed run trying to go left and Anthony Jennings. It's going to be a thirty seven yard field goal to snap at hold are. Good. The kick is right down the middle the AllState Gilgal Mets beautiful kick by Hugo. He really drove that one. A thirty seven yard fill goal now with forty five seconds to go now Clemson leading Alabama thirty one to sixteen. It's interesting. The last two games of the year. Alabama played the best to offense is in the best two quarterbacks that they faced all year Jake from Georgia in the SEC championship game. They put up over four hundred yards twenty eight points. And then they saw Tyler Murray and Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. They put up thirty four points in over five hundred yards. And I think they have met their match again tonight with this Clemson offense. They just didn't see this kind of versatility offensively or quarterback talented until the end of the year. And right now, they find themselves in a pretty significant hole here with forty five seconds left in the hands. Largest deficit of the season. Now for Alabama fifteen points. We'll get the ball back with three timeouts forty five seconds to go in the half as PT Potter gets ready to kick off again from left to right ball teed up to the park and runs to it and hits another bomb. About eight yards. Deep in the end zone is just about all of the path and remember to a tongue of a lower coming on for final possession here. It was last year in this game and the championship game. When he came on in the second half with Alabama down thirteen to Georgia and brought his team back. He's going to be in a similar situation as a sophomore starting quarterback down thirty one to sixteen right now. Let's put it up and down half or two of. Put up big numbers, but he's throwing the too closely interceptions. Both of which led to Clemson scores. From the twenty five left hash Mark near hash. Mark just the Freeman. Rush to throws off the hands of the running back Harris near the thirty near sideline and went up in the air dangerously. So for Bama. I'm not sure I throw the ball again right now. "But that that group is is strong, and deepest any defensive line in the country to allay person that sounds like a good replacement, but at the end of the night, if if Clemson couldn't hold Alabama not so much dominated. But was able to have a lot of success offensively. The Lawrence absence would have met. What how how do you quantify? I think it would be more. He'll be miss more in the run game that he will in the past game. Because he's not. Disrupted because -bility to drive off into lime back, but he's not finisher. And he's not a guy that's going to chase about a lot of quarterbacks down. So I think it'll be significant in the run game in terms of of his loss. But I also look at Amazon offensive line. And I thought Oklahoma was going to be the team that won the match up of the offense lines last week. And it wasn't the case. Alabama's offensive line has gotten better and better as seasons. Progressed Jona Williams, everyone knows about him. But the rest of the group starting to play well talking to child mcshea about this matchup and. The quarterback play can be overdone. Let's let's leave to on on the shelf. I think everything that needs to be said about him as been said covered it Trevor Lawrence, though, you hear a lot of you know, flawed itunes that platitudes about him. What what would you maybe a little concerned about tonight? I think the thing that we're going to see Alabama brings the house out. We've did the media game at media day coverage the other day, and and multiple defenders mentioned we're gonna throw the marbles Adam we're gonna we wanna see how we react to Trevor. He he is mobile and he's dangerous when he gets outside the pocket starts to run with those kind of long legs and long strides. But he's not like Tyler Murray in terms of that quick twitch athleticism and the ability to stay pressure immediately. I think you're gonna see a lot of not to get overly technical. But a and b gap blitzes inside blitzes to try to create problems that you've got Quinton coming somewhere from the inside. Now, we're going to send a Russia. A rusher to the middle. And they're going to try to get him off the spot and see if they can get to them quickly. So that would be the biggest thing is how does he handle the blitz and pressure early on in this game? It's Alabama tries to figure out if they can if that's a successful road against as we were sitting together Saturday. We heard Nick Sabin talk about Christian Miller, and we both kind of looked at each other because it didn't sound very positive if he doesn't play or can't play at a high level. How does that affect the game? I think it affects because you know, you have Anthony Jennings who's been solid this year. But hasn't been quite as explosive as years passed and Miller woods the best pass rushing. Eight and a half sacks certainly their best edge rusher. And he he's a player. It was coming on late in the season. I thought he was playing his best game before the injury gets Oklahoma. So they're gonna miss them. And they don't have a all the positions with all the depth that they have Outside Linebackers not their their deepest group. And they might have to move some of their inside guys outside or play in different kind of personnel. Groupings? To try to overcome it. But I agree with you. It's surprise me unless Nick woods poll over on us, which. I wouldn't wouldn't put a pass them at all. But he's too somber thought, right, right? Like, he finally was being honest telling something about what was going on with this team. So we'll see. Psychology. Maybe. Yeah. Because usually he doesn't say anything, right? And maybe we'll know in three hours. It's not like we're going to solve the rubik's Q. Let's let's let's wrap up talking overall games like this. I've heard coaches say today, I think ship Kelly turnovers. Other coaches have talked about the quarterback other coaches have looked for the the surprise player, Irv Smith, we had we had that conversation on CF library or for you. Where will this game be won or lost? I think I think in the trenches. I mean, we already covered it. But I think you got to be able to protect in order to export the weak spots. And I think the weak spots for both of these teams..
