"There's pent up demand for face to face business meetings, conferences, events, networking, people are just starved for that, says Harvey of Southwest business. Southwest is hoping to capture those travelers by attracting companies who want to pay lower fares, but still want to travel, he says. He also argues that since companies have more remote employees now, there's a new class of business travelers who have to fly to headquarters a few times a year. But even people who've spent decades on the road say that the pandemic has made them realize that technology has finally made it feasible to have good communication without traveling. Tina Perkins, who's worked for epic systems, a Madison Wisconsin based electronic medical records company for 20 years says she loved traveling to a new city once or twice a month to help hospitals implement epic software, but she says I've been sort of shocked by how we've been able to adapt. Whereas effective in this hybrid world, which was surprising, having done some things one way for such a long period of time. She says she'll likely travel once every four to 6 weeks going forward rather than once every two to four weeks. Other epic travelers have made the switch, too, employees now take in total about a thousand trips a month down from 3500 before the pandemic. The hotels and airlines that figure out how to make their model work without business travelers are going to be in the best position going forward, says Anthony Jackson, the U.S. airlines subsector leader at Deloitte. During the last recession, airlines expanded their premium economy seats to attract economy travelers who were willing to pay for an upgrade, but not first class, and cost conscious business travelers. Now airlines will likely further expand premium economy in part to give travelers still worried about COVID-19 a way to pay for more elbow room, says Allen Lewis, managing director for LEK consulting. Delta said October 13th, that it actually made a profit in the three months that ended September 30th, and that premium cabin seats drove much of that recovery. Business travel is still less than 50% recovered the company said. Like airlines, hotels are going to have to think up new ways to attract traveler money, says raschke of mourning consult. They might decide to try and lure digital nomads who don't have to pay rent anymore and are traveling around the country as they work. Or they may offer what's called leisure business leisure packages to people who want to work and vacation all in one trip. That may attract travelers like Henrik's who still has to make some work trips, on his last business trip before the pandemic, Henrik attended a weeklong conference of the American banking association in Orlando. Since his in laws live nearby, he used miles to fly his wife and kids down to Orlando, too. They rented an air-b-n-b near the conference and he commuted back and forth via lift. Still, the American banking association is holding the same conference this year in Tampa, but neither Henrik nor his family are attending. There is a silver lining to Henrik's traveling less frequently, though, he says he's spending more locally..

How long have you been living in the car. I've been living in this car for like about five weeks. We heard a lot of different voices in that segment from bridge of hope but we did not hear the voice. You're about to hear now there's been a. I guess you could say a changing of the guard at bridge of hope. Let me have you introduce yourself kelly. Yes i'm kelly brags. I'm the new executive director hired on last july. To take over for steven bodas. Stephen boda is no longer with the organization was still very much supporting of the organization. So yeah it's great to be here with you. Aaron the organization is still up and running bridge of hope is still doing what it does. But you came on in the middle. I guess if my math is correct my calendar math in the middle of the pandemic talk to me about We'll talk to me about how you found your way to the position and what it was like to step into that job in the middle of a pandemic you know what this position for me has been nothing other than divine of i really call it a divine door that i believe got just opened for myself and for bridge of hope i served as a pastor in the united methodist church and i have always had a heart for doing bridging missions and ministering and i was invited to come to bridge hope and to see what was going on and see if that was a position that i thought that i might be interested in absolutely i it is and it's i've been there since when we visited a bridge of hope. It very much was a physical communal gathering. Space communal meals showers available for people. communal hang out rooms. Tv rooms rec rooms. Obviously in the middle of a pandemic you're operating in a very different kind of away. Talk about what you could and couldn't do as ridge of hope with cove in nineteen happening all around you and how that affected your population. Yeah so for sure so one when you're homeless and there's a pandemic going on. I'm not sure that it necessarily affects you. The same way. Everyone else when everyone else was thinking about shutting down or changing their way of life homeless people are simply trying to survive from day to day so it wasn't really a big difference for them. They still needed the services Bridge a whole pan to shut down for a couple of weeks just so that we could figure out how we can continue to serve this community in a safe way. One of the things that we would provide we used to provide hot meals. Pre cove it that had to change you know we had to talk the volunteers about preparing a brownback lunches but also how old were prepared to make sure that was done in a safe manner and making sure that our staff knew how to provide services in a social distance manner. We could not allow as many community members to come in. We had to really change up how we were doing everything. So it was truly a transition both for staff and for community but the needs didn't change as a matter of fact they increased. People were losing their jobs at a higher speed and so we had to make sure that we were able to accommodate those people who now found themselves without places to live and without their basic needs so we saw huge increase in need. Bring us up to the present. Kelly talk about how things are bridge of hope today. How covert numbers are trending in saint. Louis ignore saint louis neighborhood of the villa where you guys are and what's different. What's the same. What's getting back to quote unquote normal. I guess for bridge of hope. Yes so we have. We've held a couple vaccination sites really trying to encourage the community into Just let them know. They're informed about what the vaccines would do missouri right now the total state we only have about thirty two percent of people who are actually vaccinated. So that's really low and it's really hitting in our urban as well as our rural areas where those numbers are even lower so we had some people who wanted to be vaccine others. Who still yet this. Don't trust the vaccine but yet we allow them to come in and we have them be served. We're still wearing masks because we know that those numbers are low so when we're in the building doing services math are still to be warn. But what's new is now. We've added some case management. So we're really working aaron to make sure that community members are really actively taking their next steps as bridge. A hope has served for the last twenty plus years where. It's a really really great job of meeting basic needs now. The new may oral changed. The focus has been said. Make sure that we can provide both mental health any type of stuff since treatment. That's needed because most of the people that come into our space. They have some type of mental illness or they're struggling with some type of substance abuse. So they're really just trying to stabilize. We're working to stabilize them. So that they can be prepared to hopefully go on and be trained in a skill or job training so they can try to get get.

"That's 5 21. This is weekend edition from NPR News. I'm Lulu Garcia Navarro. This is the story of how one man went from being a victim to becoming a hostage negotiator dealing with some of the most fearsome kidnapping groups in Nigeria. The trouble began at night. Actually, it happened on the 11th day of March, 2010 to 1. Around 11. PM Nigerian time That's Abdullahi Timber. Okay. His wife, Fatima, was a student at the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization Africa in northern Nigeria. That day, a group of gunmen broke into the school and kidnapped her and over 30. Other students marching them into the countryside, the track on their legs for almost four hours in that very The good inside to the Bush did give Bush by Deep Bush. He's referring to the lawless burnin Glory forest that is home to one of Nigeria's kidnapping hubs in the forest here in Kaduna. There is so many groups so many groups tolerant in that Bush thousands of gang members who have made an industry of mass kidnappings. Leaving people terrorized. He tells me the men are heavily armed with sophisticated reforms. In fact, their response is quite better than the Nigeria. I mean reforms, weapons financed with the ransoms family members are forced to pay. There is a script to how these things work. You see Abdullahi Tim Burke. I had been through this before. Just a month earlier. His two brothers had also been kidnapped. So after his wife went missing, he waited for a call when the kidnappers made contact. He wanted them to know one thing When you called me. I told them that my wife is regular. Fatima, His wife in the early stages of pregnancy had hidden her condition from the kidnappers. And he was terrified over her and his unborn child safety. The bandits, as he calls them made their demands They wanted to release of three gang members who had been arrested by the government, plus money, a great deal of it. The families of the students acted together as a group asking the government for help. The government did eventually released one of the gang members, but it was up to the families to gather the money. Abdullahi Timber. K is not a wealthy man. He's a journalist, but he had some land which he sold. Women sold their jewelry. Everyone did whatever they could. Yes, Yes, We are in terrible financial problem because I keep them all my belongings. There is no money to give your family food. It is so hard for us now. In total. They paid some $120,000 for those kidnapped students, he says. There is only one way out. When they keeping that you are relatives you must pay. If you didn't they will kill him. He says. Things have gotten so bad that people are afraid to visit family members who live in the countryside. People are afraid to travel by car on the open road because they could be grabbed anywhere. He says. He can't afford to be kidnapped or have another family member taken again. He's got nothing left. The Nigerian government, he says, does nothing, He says they're afraid of the gangs who are better funded and better. Armed gang members have even killed army officials, which leaves people like him having to take control. While the negotiations over his wife were going on, he became the point person to talk to the gang he developed, if not a report, then at least an understanding. He would tell them that he sympathized with their anger at the government. These people they are living in the bush for all their last year. Don't have school. They don't have electricity. You don't have even a portable water. They don't have the basics to live. And he says he does pity them. They drink water from the river. Their kids don't go to school. They have been abandoned by the state. He says. They like the way he spoke to them, and finally, the deal was struck. When the day came to hand over the ransom. We went to the Bush handed over the money to them, so they released the remaining incidents. His wife, Fatima, would end up being held 57 days in total, and she lost her unborn child in captivity. But since the kidnapping, he's been using what he learned and has been helping other families negotiate with their kidnappers. Basically, it's made him a kind of community hostage negotiator, but you have to be something so that they will listen to you. He says. He doesn't employ bravado or threats. Lives are on the line. Right now. There are two hospital workers that he's hoping will be let go. He's been talking to their kidnappers for a few months. Abdullahi Timberg says, though, that this is all untenable. Not just individuals were being held hostage, but a whole community who are utterly unprotected. He wants the Nigerian government to step in and go for talks with those he terms notorious bandits. So that people won't have to give away everything they have just to keep their loved ones alive. That's why I call the government to call them for negotiate. Give them family and give them trust us. So let the government do something. But for now, the official Nigerian government position remains that they will not negotiate or pay ransoms to the gangs and as for the school where the students were kidnapped from after that attack. It closed down. And thanks to weekend edition's Andrew Craig for his help reporting and producing this story. After a tough vaccine rollout earlier this year, Virginia had a breakthrough This past week, Latinos became the second most vaccinated group in the state, with at least 40% having received, at least one does, and more Latinos are being vaccinated than hospitalized now. So what has caused this uptick in vaccinations? She Anthony Jackson is a community health worker for the Richmond and Henrico health districts. And she joins us Now. Welcome. Thank you, Lulu. So community clinics have been credited for getting more Latinos vaccinated there. Can you tell us What is it about these clinics that they do differently, So the first point of action connects to community agencies with community services. There's something that doesn't add up. But here's what's interesting. It happened around three a.m. on Thursday, not throwing around accusations Now. Now I know why he didn't stop. As he was crossing. So what time is last call in Montgomery County, But it doesn't sound like he did anything wrong because you think that would be included in it. You know what I mean? If they figure out he was driving, you know? Under the influence or anything. I think he just happened to hit a gator. He had a £300 gator that was in the road and dragged it under his vehicle for nearly a mile. Jackson was not injured, but the Gator did not survive the crash. It was loaded onto a record while officials waited for a decision from the game warden About what to do with the body. Ultimately, the game Warren decided on a burial by sea and the Gators body was dumped into the river. I think that was a good move that Z best. That's the best solution I was gonna be. The gator could be recycled. Now. I was talking about burials. Let's see with someone the other day. When they do those now he has to be your ashes, right? Woman picked up a hitchhiker are not a good move, not a good move for anybody to pick up a hitchhiker around the bar Mills Bridge. The male suspect went into the store. He asked her to stop at the variety story. He went to the store and ran out with two bottles of fireball whiskey. He then stated he was shocking. He was in the back of the fireball. So she says he was in the back of the vehicle. He pulled out a knife and ordered me to drive away. He said. He had my my license and you know, he knew where I lived in all this stuff. So the police Got her whole story and they went to the store and they looked at the footage. Guess who was right there with him? Actively stealing the booze. The woman? Yeah. Frying. Someone needs to do a certain so what needs to do? A survey of Hominy nip bottles are abandoned. Anywhere. I'm guessing.

"I have a couple of user questions are not user questions list of questions both from the same person. Actually, her name is Maura. She's a regular listener of the podcast off. So Laura asked how often should I change my passwords? That's a really good question mark how does a really good question? I would say every 90 days is something good and a really good recommendation. Like for example, like Zoom for example, like, you know, make your password Zoom a one and then when you change your password make it Zoom, oh to zoom both resume affords and we'll five moving forward that way you don't, you know have weird password conflicts and try to make all your passwords the same thing. That's a good way to remember stuff but I say every 90 days or so, but if you're one of those people that's never had an issue with a computer as far a virus goes or something like that. I would not worry about it too much. But if you've got regular maintenance going on a regular problems, then you should probably change your password more often off. And before I move on to the her next question. I'd like to ask I don't didn't have this in my typed out questions. What do you think about Panthers? Our Management Solutions like last past that remember all your passwords for you. Yeah. So I use LastPass. I really like it. I couldn't live without it actually. Yeah. Yeah as an IT birth and computer person. I've got accounts for everything everything requires a username and password. I think they're fantastic 111 password for everything. I like. Yeah, I guess last past myself as well and a client former client of mine. I do web development outside of this podcast as well as working in retail, but I do web development and one of web development clients was concerned that what happens if last pass itself gets hacked then they've got access to all your passwords. Well, I don't think that's ever going to happen log out / passes on by a company called LogMeIn and Logan takes security and they've got in a huge amount of what's called redundancy in place. That way if something does happen your card. Because they know that's a liability, right? Yeah, that's that's reassuring to know for sure. And then Laura also asked what's the best way to protect yourself when you shop online the easiest and best way to protect yourself is make sure that the site has what's called an SSL and you can tell that by choice. It has a lot on the URL. So if it's like www.xoom.com take a look at the Lock And if you click on it, it'll stay certificate and then there's a sentence that says wage that is how you know, you're safe. You don't ever want to put your credit card information or any type of email personal information that does not have what's called an SSL. Right? Right. Exactly. That's something that I've made sure for a long time. Make sure it has the SSL certificate make sure it's got the lock lot of people are using vpns. What are your opinions on VPN off? Keep people safe at all or is it just kind of feel-good type thing. I can leave your hands are kind of thing of the past man. I think the important thing to take away is when you're at like a Starbucks or a break something just make sure that the the the Wi-Fi is protected. I don't really like vpns. I think it's just an additional expense. Most people have a job in nine-to-five. So finding them at a cafe is going to be few and far between in my opinion. But if you buy a VPN, I would get clear on what a VPN it what does suck your you know, the person you bought it from and make sure you understand fully what the consequences are and things like that. Yeah. I know it wasn't nordvpn that was hacked about a year ago, I believe now. Yeah. I think that revealed a lot of issues with vpns in general. I mean, I think you know if you're using like Netflix and wants to see some off Show that's another region a VPN might work for that. But of course there might be some issues with that as well. I'm not sure have it completely wrap. It looks your yeah. I mean, it's just it's a preference. You know, I don't recommend it personally, but it's totally up to the user. Yeah. So yeah, that's really all the questions that I had today. Is there anything that you wanted to add as far as any tips or tricks or anything with Windows security? I would just encourage each and every one of you to make a backup. I'll just share quick story with you. We had a customer who his son had cancer and he was born and he died at eighteen and he had a bunch of pictures on his hard drives and it's hard drive mechanically fixed. There was no getting it back. So we just sent him over to a company called drivesavers just wishes company that specializes in advanced data recovery and they wage. To get in the guy paid like $5,000 to get it all back. It was like Fifty gig or some crap that was huge and always man always back up your data keep this in mind that memories can Asda right? Yes, and that brings me to another question that I'm just saying it up. I know just over time working with computers. I've been told solid state drives have a limited limited number of rights to it. Once it's written so many times. You can't really do much less often more but we've got mechanical hard drives. I know solid state drives have improved so much. What do you see more of a failure rate with hard drives or solid-state drives? Oh hard drives a Hummer traditional how to flatter drives. If you have not upgraded to a solid state drive. It can literally bring your computer back to life yet. They make such a difference especially in when he's dead. Oh, yeah, and I know I'll go ahead I was just going to say if you haven't made that jump then you should and if you're building a computer like for gaming or whatever you want to do like a Compaq computer which we make by the way, there's even a faster Drive above the SSD called an M too. And I can't even believe how fast those things are. The last computer being built was an amateur. It was 64 gig phone rings and I 73.9 was crazy high and it I mean installed Windows and a hundred like 2 minutes and just crazy. Yeah. I know for me one of the best upgrades I've made on a older computer was moving from a traditional hard drive to a solid state drive now. Yes, they do cost more for the amount of space that you get but the package has been coming down over the years and it's like I didn't make any processor upgrade the RAM upgrades. I just put everything on solid state drive and it boots up off. Faster and of course even faster if you're using like M. Too and Vienna me things like that. My recommendation is if you have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet and you're looking to make that job make sure you put it on sustained. It'll make all the difference in the world and I'm not know just keep in mind that just because your computer is eligible for.

"And the North up 400 all the way up toward the Canton area. Doug Turnbull in the traffic team. Plus Brad Nets will keep you safe and sound for your ride home and we're going to keep you hopefully entertained for your ride home. We got a big big show tonight. Russian Gainesville's coming back would never have I ever with Russian Gainesville, Britney from around Atlanta is actually going to come back now because they're actually things to do around Atlanta. That's a positive side. But I want to start off. With something Chris Chandler talk. I mean, it's been in every newscast, basically, for the last month and a half is the back to school, the digital learning and stuff. You don't have to deal with that yet, Chuck, right, cause you're your daughters, too Young and Anthony Jackson Abernathy Pains Bridge. 400 Toll Plaza Thomas is a newborn, so there's no but Longoria you are dealing in. Ah, really, life Digital learning thing? Yes. And how is it going? Going, is it? We had some bumps this this week. I mean, it was the first week so there was sometimes where they got kicked off for the video wasn't working or they couldn't hear the teacher. You know, it's weird. Try girls engaged. Are they enjoy? Yeah, Olivia seems there's more fun stuff for the younger one. I mean, there's songs and stuff, So the older ones kind of sees that ends like I want to do something, but you know she's doing math and writing and So her is she's a lot. She was like She told me two days, right? Yes. Second grade. She was bored, and I think it's just because they had to go through all the rules and they weren't really challenging her so well, you know, we'll see how it goes. So I don't have Children. But I'm seeing firsthand because my fiance teaches second graders and they're doing it digitally. And so every time I get off work in the morning, I come home and my is in this digital learning realm. And it sounds a second grade, too. So it sounds fun like they're like They're learning their doing stuff. But it's like I forgot what second grade was all about. It's just, you know, just to eavesdrop on what's going on there. And I thought about this like this is Tough time for everyone involved right that the students? This is tough for them. The parents How are we going to do this? What? What's gonna happen? How do I help my, my kids? On the teachers. God bless the teachers there. Haven't you know there's teachers that I've been doing this for 30 35 years in classroom, and now they're saying, Hey, do it on a laptop. You know, it's it's like it's horrible situation for everybody. Everyone's trying make the best of it. And with apologies to Chuck's favorite book It takes a village by Hillary Clinton. I know Chuck's got a framed copy inside an office design framed copy of her. Him and Hillary basher. Eggs over the fire place was that it was at the Barnes Noble and Bucket is over you anyway, I'm gonna I'm gonna take that from your your favorite offer. Take the village. So I just I had this thought this morning. So this morning. One of our traffic troopers is a teacher, High school teacher, and he sent me an email. He's a good dude. And he's like, Hey, I've got a class of high schoolers that are interested in the media Baba block. Can you do a zoom call with us Friday morning and just talk about your job and do questions? Whatever it was they? Absolutely So I did it this morning. And it was a lot of fun. Great, smart, inquisitive questions from the kids took like 15. 20 minutes. Whatever. And I I enjoyed it that you know that And I know if I was senior junior in high school and had access to someone I'm not patting myself someone that's actually on the radio or TV like that would have been really cool for me. So I had this this thought today after I finish that up. That it again. I hate that I'm quoting Hillary Clinton here, but Maybe it takes a village right now to get through this digital learning. So here's my idea. What can you do You listening right now? Even if you don't have kids, you're not a teacher. You're not apparent. Whatever. What can you do to enhance this new digital learning landscape we have for me. It's easy I could I did the zoom call my cell phone. 15 20 minutes was nothing but maybe hopefully to make a difference for the kids and add some enhancement to the education. They're getting break up the monotony of the online learning that you're trying to learn algebra on. Zoom like that. I just I stake at it in classroom with Ms McCluskey Be like no air. I'm X does not equal nine like slapping me like I had trouble in the class or imagine learning calculus online or So I said, You know what I'm doing? I want to do more of this. So here's what I'm going to do. And Deborah Green's gonna freaking hate me right now, if you are an educator or a parent or a student or whatever. And you want Me, too, to do anything for your digital learning whether it's kindergarten through college. Send me an email, mark dot Eramet wsb tv dot com. I'm not going to flood your inbox, Debra, but I'm going to forward these to you and I will set up 15 to 20 minute blocks in the morning. And heck, why not? Let's break up the monotony of the digital online learning of your day and I can come in and and just, you know, answer questions, Talkabout this job. Talk about my education. Whatever. I want to do something to help because this is such a strain. This online learning. I want to do what I can to help. Do they teach baseball card collecting? If they do, then definitely hook me up. So if you are in the education realm I'm offering this is free. This isn't cameo. I'm not charging you 1999 to say happy birthday to Aunt Mildred, But we will schedule it and it's very simple. I could do it right. I did it right in the traffic center this morning. I will. I will do my part to help educate the youth during this awful listen, it's awful situation right now. So I will do that if you want and and you know, you can aim higher like you can shoot for Fred Blankinship. Yeah, you could shoot for Scott's late. I mean, I mean, I'm like the Dustin diamond of this this in their foot in the door. If you want. You want screech, You got screech. You can go for Zach, if you want, but Screeches available. I'm just saying you should be an email marked out a remote wsb tv dot com and we'll schedule Debra's going to schedule me. And I'll just bang out some zoom calls just to do my part. I want to do your I'm sorry. I'm a little late for traffic with Doug. Terrible. It's wet out there. Doug has going on a Friday, buddy. It really is bad out here Mark, especially places where it's flooding at 6 15 Let me just lay out the flooding spot because we've got a brand new one and and muddy construction zone 400 South nor the 2 85. All lanes now have several inches of water across them, and people cannot pass, Then add speed. Not completely flooded out. But 400 South is a real tight squeeze the flooding before 2 85 stay off of that We're seeing water pull up in the left lane to 85 north, the interlude heading up to South cop drive in the Chattahoochee River Bridge area, and there's still flooding that shuts down the 75 North Express lanes of Windy Hill and 75 south. The three left lanes are flooded out before to 85 God County Mark. Thanks, dawg. Traffic every six minutes.
