Who Is 'First Casualty' Author Toby Harnden?

"Before we get into these amazing stories, Mike span, David Tyson, John walker lind, who is Toby Honda. Tell us about what you did in the British armed forces and your life as a journalist before you became an author. Yes, well, you know, we share a somewhat similar accent as listeners and viewers will detect. You still got yours. Our minds kind of rubbing off a little bit, but I don't know. I'm worried. I'm worried about mind getting a little bit Americanized. But I trust yeah, you're a bit soggy in the middle of the Atlantic somewhere. Yeah, I mean the ace. So yeah, I'm 56 years old, I was born in 66. My father was in the navy. We moved around, we sort of ended up in Manchester, industrial city in the northwest. You don't have a mancunian accent. I think the Royal Navy actually did for the mancunian accent, which was pretty skin deep anyway. But you know, I sort of, you know, I wanted to follow in my father's footstep, I guess there's so many sort of young men do. And I also wanted to get out of Manchester and see the world and it just seemed like a very kind of insular sort of small sort of place. And so all that teenage angst was just channeled towards working hard to get out. And so I got a sponsorship from the I joined the navy at 18. Went to Dartmouth, which is the Britannia royal naval college, kind of the equivalent of the U.S. naval academy at Annapolis, but not really because it's more basic officers training. It's like santas is shorter. Yeah, that's right. I mean, I was there for less than a year. And I threw the navy I got a sponsorship to Oxford to study modern history, so I went off whilst serving naval officer, although I barely wore the uniform for those years apart from a few months sailing around sort of Hong Kong and the far east and Australia. So I had some good times. Yes, exactly. So I was serving naval officer for three years at college and then graduated from college and was pitched in to a career. Which I enjoyed immensely, but you know, it was after the Falklands War, which was 1982, I was joining and supplying to join just sort of join the Falklands actually, age 16. But I missed that. I was stationed in Scotland for the Gulf War, tried very hard to get involved. They managed to that's a long way away from Iraq. I know. They managed to win it without meeting my services. And I remember my boss at the time said, listen to, we don't worry about it. There's going to be plenty of time for medals. And I remember thinking, no, there won't. Kathie Lee Gifford Is an Unapologetic Woman of Faith

"Kathy, you are one of those people I told you this before. You make me happy. I start cracking stupid jokes because that's the way I think it is. Well you better. But that's the wavelength Iran that you're funny. You can do shtick. You can sing. And then you write books. And so the reason you're in the studio today is not to sing, although perhaps you will. I might break into ladies and gentlemen. Pray that I don't. What do you say? She ain't what she used to be. But you have a book out. So that's ostensibly why you're here. But I've known you for quite a long time. Yes. And you are a woman of faith, and the thing that I say to people, and I've said this for years, I don't know if I've said this to you publicly, but what I've always felt we needed in the culture and I've always wanted to try to be one of those people. Is a public figure who is openly Christian. And whenever I talk about that, I immediately go to you because I think who has been out there over the years who has just been leading her life as a public figure, not as a Christian figure, but who is nonetheless openly Christian. And I really think that that's kind of the missing piece in the culture because we've divided. We've got the Christian faith over here, and then we've got the rest of the world here. And anybody with common sense knows that's nonsense. Right. But very few people are willing to live that out. You're one of them. In fact, you might be two or three of them. And I want to say thank you. Sweetie. You know, I've always had a boldness about my faith. Ida Lashes Northeast With Tornadoes and Severe Flooding

"As we mentioned remnants of hurricane ida have been spawning heavy rain tornadoes and life. Threatening conditions in the mid atlantic northeast. A tornado warning was even posted here in new york city. Major highways are flooded with cars and buses trap and the subways are shutting down in what the national weather service says is the city's first ever flash flood emergency. Several large tornadoes were reported north of philadelphia and in south jersey. As we mentioned new jersey's governor phil murphy has just declared a state of emergency. Some neighborhoods had to be evacuated cars and buses there were stranded in floodwaters and now thousands in the region are without power earlier this afternoon. What twister roared through. Parts of annapolis maryland pulling down trees and power poles and in louisiana. Where this same storm system tore apart the state's power grid. Some low lying communities remain largely underwater. Many hospitals in the state are still running on generators and again today. The governor warned evacuated residents knocked comeback yet. The water system is really poor. Electricity is non-existent. Communications actually started getting a little bit better today. We have not figured out the fuel situation. Don't come back before the paris tells you that they are ready to receive you because you're just going to create another demand on a system that can't withstand the demand that currently has for more. We welcome to the broadcast joe. Valenti is the emergency management director for jefferson parish louisiana. Now take a look at this map. Jefferson parish stretches from new orleans the new orleans shoreline with lake pontchartrain. All the way down to grand isle in the gulf joe. Thank you for being with us. How are you faring. And how are the people in jefferson parish tonight. Well i mean. District type of circumstances are not really new to us but doesn't been difficult when he completely lost the grid one hundred percent of the power. "Annapolis, w. T. O P S John Doman, who was in the courtroom when the verdict was read. Well, John, what was the reaction like in there when that happened? Guys. It was a lot of exhale I've ever heard in a room. Not really. Many smiles. There was cheering a couple of sobs but mostly exhales. Those who survived the shooting and those who lost loved ones in it. They all sort of collectively had been holding their breath for the last three years. Almost, and then they let it all out there in that courtroom, and after they left, there was applause for the state's attorney in the hallway, more hugging, and then, when the jury came out to leave the courthouse, they got a round of applause to some of them. Then went out of their way to shake the hands of some of the victims who testified some of those victims who testified right in front of them. They shook hands on the way out. Never seen anything like it before John 12 days of testimony, and then, of course, synthesized in the final arguments of what was the argument that seemed to resonate with ensuring The state's attorney and colitis says she spoke to some of the alternate jurors about that. And she said the last witness for the prosecution Dr Samir Patel, really resonated with them. He was the court ordered independent psychiatrist He spent 20 hours interviewing Jared Ramos. He's the one who found Ray most criminally responsible, initially saying that Ramos just did too many things before, during and after the shooting that to him made it abundantly clear. Ramos knew exactly what he was doing was wrong and that he chose to break the law things. Like admitting he claimed to be arrested. He called 911 to say that he was done shooting just to make sure that arriving police wouldn't shoot him accidentally to doctor Patel in the jury. It was irrefutable evidence that has twisted his Jarrod Ramos may have been. He knew exactly what he was doing, John, We don't have a lot of time. But have you learned anything else since the end of the trial? So there was some never before details related to how certain people died. Some of it really dark and gruesome, and relatives of those who died had to end up hearing this in court with everyone else, and at times it was kind of gut wrenching. Also, doctor Patel said Ramos told him he wanted this whole thing to be a circus. He used the word farce and afterward, I heard lightest, telling some of the survivors that Ramos was hoping certain people would be called to testify, including Eric Hartley, whose article 10 years ago was really started. All of this. Ramos wanted him on the stand to see All of this, but light is said, and I quote we made this not pleasurable for him on purpose. We knew what he wanted, and we wouldn't give it to him. Accumulating Snow, Wintry Mix Expected This Week in Washington DC Area

"Some winter stuff out of Sergeant. Yeah. Sean Rowan, tracking two rounds of wintry weather for the rest of the work week. And then another storm system looks to impact the region over the weekend Now, Right now we're looking at mainly clear skies here in the metro area, more clouds north and background. The idea one quarter and that's being reflected. Temperatures, but based on the ground position, we could have a really nice sunset tonight. Sunset time now at about 5 40, with lows tonight in the mid twenties to low thirties were drawing during the day tomorrow. But during the evening hours snow showers move into the area and a wintry mix will develop in spots around the metro region, South and east as a snow moves in and continue in spots. South and east overnight on into Thursday morning, North and west of the Metro. This is looking like mainly just snow with high temperatures tomorrow in the mid thirties toe low 40 So again that first round tomorrow night through the mid day hours on Thursday, accumulations generally speaking right now. About 1 to 3 inches. Isolated amounts could be higher north and west of the Metro up to four inches or more of that first round. The second round is then. Thursday night through Friday morning, this round looks to be all snow with additional accumulations of about 1 to 3 inches, bringing our snowfall totals to about 5 to 8 inches by Friday morning. So this is a long duration event with breaks in the action, meaning you'll be able to get out and about but will also be dealing with slick roads at times with highs Thursday, only in the low to mid thirties. Friday, we warmed to around 30 and then Saturday and Sunday high temperatures back. Yeah, I should say remaining in the thirties, and it looks like we'll have a storm system, moving in later Saturday into Sunday. With a wintry mix right now in the books for that system. Currently we're at 49 in Manassas, 50 in Arlington and 46 in Annapolis. Thanks familiar Brought to you by new Look

"A master's program in national security studies after Annapolis and really had the opportunity to fulfill a dream but you know as a kid I wanted to fly jets off aircraft carriers and loans with little little hard work and diligence I I had the opportunity to serve in the navy flying super Hornets FE teams up with the the USS Nimitz for the most part and had the honor to to to lead and serve in operation Iraqi freedom in the first seven months of the war there in two thousand and three so absolutely best job in the world experience of a lifetime and came off of active duty in two thousand and nine and moved back to the district here in so cal and I've been in a larger US space firm for the last eleven years so beautiful family wife and two young boys and you know we just got to the point after watching that twenty eighteen election night I wasn't comfortable sitting on the sidelines and watching what was happening in California and then really start to see that creep into the national level with some of the folks who were elected in twenty eighteen between Katie hill AOC and and a few other members of the freshman class simple OC and decided to no longer sit in silence and observe it and actually do something about it what do you what do you make of what China did here that's just had a few issues with this virus and now the effect on the whole country yeah well they kind of been a threatened several domains I think it's kind of not been getting the attention that is needed obviously and wind and Mrs brought us to our knees the investigation's gonna move forward it you know obviously to McCarthy's talking about the the task force to investigate it and hopefully I'm a part of that and and over the course of the next several months if I'm elected tomorrow but this is something that you know a few of us have been aware of you know China is not a near peer threat China is absolutely appear threat in in several domains not just not just in this regard but we have become too reliant on them in some cases the pharmaceutical and food pieces of this and have have been manifested but we still are very vulnerable to that country and we need to bring obviously a lot of that work back here and and become less dependent and also seek second source suppliers and all in a lot of these areas and and hopefully that if there is a silver lining any of this it's a it's the realization of just how vulnerable we are trying to it seems like yeah Democrats perhaps even your opponents are busy attacking the president not really focused on machine over there in China is that what's happening with your opponent yeah I you know that that's exactly what it is she she was caught actually on on video my opponent mocking me for my military service on a product soon called it she thought was know who was paying attention but that's now public domain so you know really tone deaf you know going after not only the president but also someone who served our country in a district that's got a lot of aerospace and defense here as well so and it is really put a bright light on what these folks are doing or not doing things for the right reasons or not doing it in the interest of survival or helping our nation get through this it's it's about party politics for them and frankly that's that's why we will be successful tomorrow night and you know this will be the first Republican congressional seat clawed back in the state of California since nineteen ninety eight and it's because folks are waking up they're seeing that the difference between leadership and and professional politicians and they're tired of the old games are tired of the party politics we just want to be able to continue to afford to live in California especially in the they're paying attention this time it is very important my Garcia the people turn out and vote or it won't turn out the right way and that's the crucial thing here with these special elections are off year elections people just saddle B. okay tell people why that's not the case yeah I mean when you when when people don't pay attention they don't show up we end up with folks like Katie hill and you'll see and and you know those those are the reasons why they're there and people were paying attention and taking it seriously out of my team we've come a long way we've got great voter turn out in support of us so far but we can't we can't take anything for granted especially not in California and we've got to keep the the throttle wide open here until the finish line so very important folks voters opportunities to vote in person and and again everyone has a mail in ballot so if you're in the twenty fifth district please fill out that ballot vote for Mike Garcia and let's close this deal make a statement it'll be heard around the country and remind us again of the major towns in your district yes so it's the antelope valley Palmdale Lancaster the Santa Clarita valley as well as the valley so northern LA county and eastern Ventura county right now right in the the the heart of the envelope for any people want to look at a website for any information so far where did they go yeah I think markets elect Mike Garcia dot com that the election my Garcia dot com for folks in the district there's a resource to find the nearest building center and how you can vote and if anyone left to support were obviously running in this race but we also have to run again in November for the following two years so this is quite the marathon for so you know any help out there is is much appreciated looking forward to the big win tomorrow and the the bigger win in November as well and hopefully this will be the first step back to getting the house back in twenty twenty to get the president reelected as well let's go ahead and post sent Mister producer and as for your opponent what is her name Christy Smith and what is she done well she's our local elected assembly member in Sacramento so what she has done is effectively raised our taxes roughly three billion dollars of of her fingerprints on tax increases sees path to build its killed the independent contractors in the small businesses and before that she was policy person at the department of education so he's never really had to be accountable for the payroll run a business or or understanding it was just another pelo see flunkies what it sounds like to me basically issues talked herself up underneath her wing already even during his candidacy and she's a flawed candidate not popular here in California and you know we need to we need to hold accountable I live in nights that's the twenty fifth district in California big special election Mike Garcia I want a door to my car scene with you all the best and we'll see how it goes tomorrow if you have those voting ballots voters if you don't show up we need to send a message both in this district and throughout the country my Garcia I wish you all the best Sir thank you mark I appreciate it hi good luck and god bless and there's a the man who served his country in a very serious way imagine flying a jet off an aircraft carrier it's even harder to land them on the Democrats carrier I mean these things are going fast even when they're slowing down I mean others said there's a good guy so the people in this district the twenty fifth of California P. what can we do what can we do you can do this it's going to send a message if he wins it is going to send a message if he loses unfortunately I don't have any voting areas that I'm living in so but you do out there in the twenty fifth in California if you're not sure where it is go to mark living show Facebook mark living show Twitter and we're posting his links you can find out yourselves and again if you live in this district can you hear me there I know you do K. A. R. LA country among other stations and satellite in on the apps and all the rest please if you have one of these ballots at your house use it if you don't go out tomorrow and vote we were going to do in California not allowed to do anything else right so you might as well vote I'll be right back.

B. I. C. I. A. we're always you know so above and beyond that you know there were some partisan people who kind of picked out that one side or the other and were very biased so I I never I never stop and think about that I that I have great army friends of some of my some of my best friends are some of my best friends are guys I've heard that before look Carter page up you are a victim of this attack on democracy it which is what it was you know people people hear your name but you're you're sitting here your real person you suffered this nightmare of being falsely accused a patriotic American falsely accused of a centrally betraying your country now you've never been indicted because it was never any evidence it was all a lie it was all scale how does someone feel going through that kind of nightmare especially when you serve your country as a naval officer well the thing that I always bear in mind Kurt is if you look at all of the really aggressive steps that were taken against press against president trump I always bear in mind that they're not doing it to take down may they were trying to attack through Canada trump as president elect trump and into his the threat the early years of administration even till now you know when they come after me it's not you know they could care less about me I'm completely expendable so I what your collateral damage take care well there they ruin your life collateral on the one hand but you know the facts they they tried to focus on because I you know I had worked in Russia right either totally above board a lot of people were a lot of people United Russia was in the process of creating a free market right so I worked on a lot of privatization projects you know things to help them you know work better with U. S. companies etcetera so it's you got sucked into this entire nightmare do you feel like you you're you're through the tunnel you feel like it's your it's out here out from underneath it I I think all of the things that members of Congress have been talking about and what the president have been talking about have these abuses which have really done so much damage to our country that's my focus and I'm really trying to take.
