"Are gonna help us figure out why is it called Zoom? But first, meditation teacher and author Sharon salzberg is here to play a game with us. So Sharon, I happen to know that you are a huge fan of the musical Hamilton. I am. So how many times have you seen it live? I've seen it 9 times late. Wow. Okay. In New York? At first in New York. I mean, basically what happened the first time was that I was writing my previous book and I was really late with it. I was really stuck. I was very, very discouraged and my thought embarrassed to admit was it's my tenth book. Nobody cares what I have to say anymore. Just phone it in, you know? Turn something in and just then a friend took me to see Hamilton and the man while Miranda, who wrote it, of course, was still in it. He was playing Hamilton. And so I was sitting there in the theater staring at him thinking you wrote this, this came out of your brain, you know? And I thought you can never compromise can never do anything half hearted. You have to put absolutely everything you've got into whatever you're creating it. The friend who brought me teases me, he said, and then I said, do you want to go out to dinner? And he said, I have to go home and write. Even you talking about it, I remember it. Crazy. Okay, so we get it. You've seen it. You know the material. But by Lin-Manuel Miranda's own admission, he took quite a few artistic liberties. So in this game, we're going to play you a clip from the original Hamilton cast soundtrack. And all you have to do is tell us if what you heard is historically accurate, or if the information is not accurate. So we're saying Hamilton or Hamill false. I'll try. Okay. Here's your first clip. This is Angelica Schuyler in the song satisfied..

"The history. You know what good point out but you know so for example when he you know there's a few when he meets angelica schuyler. She was already married. Excuse me yep. She was already married. Also that last name does not look like schuyler and it makes me and say wait. Germans already married. She was already married in real life. Yes there's a few other things we're gonna finish that story for me. what happened. Did she get divorced. You know like she says. I met a husband staling england. He's he's been very interesting etcetera like at some point during the show she gets married and got it leaves. She was already married. Moved away but was already married when he met her. Okay fascinating well okay. The other thing you've done well first of all talk about your favorite time period in american history for just a second. Is it the revolution. That's one of them. I mean i love the revolution because it is i mean. There's what's not to love frankly. The american revolution. What's not what santa of one of the things that i think about frequently is how difficult life was for people how difficult it was and what kind of obstacles people have overcome this and just thinking about hamilton's life you don't see his childhood obviously in the show you know that. His mother dies his mother was. He's been continually referenced. The fact that his mother was a woman of ill repute. And at the time you had it was very very difficult to move yourself out of that situation. And so his mother dies. Who's putting the caravan cousin who commit suicide. But he's so bright and he sales across the ocean and is just like. I'm here now. Literally is no connection. I'm here and the idea that you could come from that and beyond our money. Yeah like that. That is interesting to me. I also think about the people who immigrated to. Let's say georgia south carolina. A lot of them were from scotland. Yes where it's it's breezy and cool and rainy and then they moved to georgia. Where was more where you are wearing multiple layers of wool and there's no air conditioning. That i am a minnesotan. And so that idea of like i'm going to live with. There's no air conditioning and wear multiple layers of wool. Even that is like I'm out. I think the same about i love wild west. I love pioneers. I loved that whole story. Because i think they they gave up everything for this one thing. They believed that it was going to be better there than it was here. I mean challenged. We have no idea. I might get mad if i run on new paper right. And they like gave up everything and lived in a wagon people. Ask me all the time. Like has has been as bad as.

She was also in the broadway productions of rent the color purple and the lion king she was on. Tv shows like ally mcbeal and the good wife and the soap opera one life to live and now she gets to show off her comedy chops not to mention her ability to parody nineties pop songs in a new show called girls five aba. It just got renewed for a second season. So here's the plot. It's about a one. Hit wonder girl group from the nineteen nineties whose members have dropped out of music and have pretty much been living in obscurity. One of them's even a dentist. But when a hip hop artist decides to sample one of their old songs people remember they performed together for the first time in decades on a late night show and end up deciding they wanna keep performing. They fire their sexist manager who took advantage of them when they were younger and decide to write their own new songs. They wanna make music again as a group even though the odds are against them the executive producer of girls. Five ebba is tina fey. And you can tell the jokes come fast and feminist and the songs may feel like you know them from the nineties but the lyrics make fun of misogyny of those times goldsberry plays the character wicky. Who tried to hold onto the success and fame with a solo career but it never took off she still pretending to be a social media influencer but in reality. Her job is shooting geese at the airport so when the group gets the second chance. Wiki thinks that finally the world will recognize her talent in this scene. Waikiki trying to convince her bandmate played by sarah. Sarah's to get the group back together. I was never done with music. Okay after i went to solo the label decided i was difficult just because i let my backup singers wear makeup and refused to play venues. That also did sports. I thought there's little think of stuff is going to be my ticket back to the fame and the lifestyle i am owed because of the voice odd alpa renee elise goldsberry. Welcome to fresh air. Thank you. I'm so happy to be here. Can you describe your character. Wicky roy wicky is desperately in need of a second chance. She is a woman who believes that stardom was destined for her and she also is under the misbelief that she needed to climb over everybody along the way to achieve her dreams and when we meet her we discover that that did not work out for her and she has a pretty hard lesson ahead of her to figure out how to turn. I think what is a beautiful talent away from being something that's cancerous in her and into something that really lifts her and everyone around her up as high as possible. I think part of the reason why people love this series is the songs they sound just like. They're supposed to sound john wise. They sound like songs from the late nineties. Early two thousands from girl and boy groups but they also make fun of the lyrics. Do you have a favorite song of the ones you saying. Oh my gosh dream girlfriends. Is this one song dream girlfriends. 'cause our dads are dead so you never have to meet them and get asked why you left school like they're just so very calm the line about tarantino like i love tarantino i like stand up but not by women like every single song from the split need to famous five ever. You know. there are just so brilliantly constructed they walk this line between being real songs that somebody would put out in the ninety s like you said making fun actually kind of making us aware of some of the ridiculous things that we might have thought but also being just good enough to be to make it on an album but you understand why it didn't make it as a hit. One of your breakout moments was in a production at shakespeare in the park. The musical two gentlemen of verona. And you've got great reviews the times called you. What is it. I can tell you well. Whatever time spark plug of musical wit and vitality. I believe this. The show. Shakespeare in the park white year is a two thousand and five two thousand five. So why did that show was the impact on your career. It was huge. It was huge. I remember when i got the soap opera. I was still in the soap opera. At the time i remember. My fear of the job was that i would be not written for but in a contract where i i was just sitting there and i couldn't do anything else and the beauty is the opposite happened. They did end up writing for me. And i had an opportunity. My executive producer. Frank valentini used to let me do all the theater in the world. He's made it work. And kathleen marshall cast me to play. Sylvia in two gentlemen of verona opposite norm. Lewis with rod dawson and oscar. Isaac there. I was in the show because kathleen marshall took a chance on me from my audition. I was nobody and she created this amazingly interesting fantastic character..

"Angelica schuyler from the movie version of hamilton. So how did you get through this number every time. Oh my goodness well. I had a whole lot of help. I actually loved watching it on disney. Plus because i actually got to see just how much support there was around me. The music is amazing. The the dramatic moment of the song just stopping time in having the entire journey of one character within one number a decision that she makes it changes. The lives of three people within one song is so brilliant. So it's a feet. It's a lot of words and it's a rangy song and emotionally as even greater but it's constructed so beautifully that i found it so easy. The hardest thing for me to do with that song in the beginning was to not be crying at the end of it because the choice was so stark in so painful and i just felt it was constructed so beautifully that it moved me so greatly that it was hard for me to sing the end of the song but the rap. What i get so much. Credit for was always easy for me. Because it's written so commonsensical lin manuel miranda wrote a played a lawyer many many years and he wrote an argument that is so methodically. "Thank you for spending part of your day with me at the beginning of the new film ways our protagonist hi there Williams he's got it all the star of the high school wrestling team in Florida he's crazy about his girlfriend Alexis he studies hard he plays the piano his parents love them and sister does too and that sibling way when dad who is played by a sterling K. brown insists that because they are a black middle class family they have to work ten times as hard as everyone else to get ahead and that means working out with his father every weekend never taking homework break never losing a wrestling match and that was mother Katherine play very neat Raley's go very sorry Renee tries her best to relieve some of Tyler stress the pressure from his father continues to mount and with a serious injury and some startling news from his girlfriend throws Tyler into a downward spiral the tragic consequences leave the Williams family left to cope somehow okay so that's the plot but you really have to see waves to get the full sensory experience the scimitar Griffey is vibrant and electric the camera swoops and spins in the music of Kanye Kendrick and Frank ocean create a thumping heart beat in this film which premieres on November fifteenth at the Angelica and MC make it square it was written and directed by Trey at work shows who's in studio hatred hello we're also joined by Calvin Harris and who plays Tyler Williams nice to see you again Sir and Renee Elise Goldsberry who showed us all her dramatic chops in HBO's the immortal life of him relax after wowing the world with her Tony Award winning portrayal of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton Renee nice to meet you not so nice to me so true from what I read in please tell me because you know the internet is often wrong then it took about ten years to get this project together and going what was going on during those ten years that made a decade in the making honest it wasn't anything grazers just creative I didn't know it was you know ideas for this but I didn't know how they all came together and it was the broad structure you know and brother and sister but how does this all intermingle and it was honestly just that and creative and I think a few things coming together for why it was now that it was right you now I think getting to the other side of some personal stuff and having perspective on that and then meeting Callum my last movie in that collaboration and then all those things and then yeah it was time you know you should be on the radio all the time all those so you said that you had spent some time with kids to make sure that the script felt really authentic what did you learn what was something that you had to change in the script creepy research I understand seventeen I mean it yes it was I did research like old man online and talk to some kids that if you kids read the script and get perspective shockingly not a thon had to change it was more it was specificities you know specificity of the social media and some language and stuff but what was really interesting is I think so much of the movie kind of grew out of cal and I talking about our time at that age with my girlfriend as well and like our experiences and and had spaces and so like first it really started from there and then making sure that it works contemporaries well but what I realize is you know I think some of these things were going through are at that time listen like even our parents are struggling with stuff in different ways of course each generation has its new nuances and but that's what it was really about finding the specificity of now you know Renee what you think when you read the script I was so grateful that they characters of parents I play the mother Katherine were developed in ways that I find unique in films about high school kids or even college kids the parents tend to be kind of off on an island there either like the foil or their you know their to provide something but they don't actually if you're looking to the perspective of the child you don't typically really see and after a three dimensional person there that is also kind of responsible and suffering for whatever happens and in this instance I was I was so pleasantly surprised to see the development of both parents and you know windows into their reality and kind of how you the young people are kind of affect their relationship and and caring what happens to their relationship was really just refreshing so can you said you worked with tranice of it so when you first got the script and you looked at it what were some of the things that you thought you know what we should do this or we should do that or I'd like to see this in my character or in the other characters yeah I mean I was first I was just so blown away about how well he was able to to listen and actually see me from those conversations we had it's like you know you meet someone you have this beautiful relationship with them he feels like my Big Brother but then you don't do you do you actually Love Me enough to to represent my version of what my family could look like in the script so I was impressed and and grateful for it but then it was just really getting into like the dad and what with the small things that would remind us that he still that he's a human being as well and that his his his motives also have justification in some sense so was trying to find out what was making Ronald work the way he did and we just kind of tough talk flushing out you know what was it what will my dad say when you walked into my bedroom when he wants to check me and that but the with the fashion foundation was always there them that monologue sterling has in that room was always there and just kind of worked it out did you do chemistry test at all it with the actors and I know the first time their whole family Matt was the night before shooting it was crazy yeah and my favorite burger place the tub himself for and and I thought the chemistry was there immediately between the five of us but there was it were you gonna say tie and lex their chemistry they Matt elects auditioned and then they Matt and I mean their chemistry was like through the roof from the beginning yeah I'm curious because you know the movie I'm not giving too much away it's from the two kids point of view but we really don't see the daughters point of view at all for a long time I did I did read anything with movie before I watched it so it was really interesting I think and she comes out and she comes back it back in a big way for listeners was that it was intentional that Emily would be really far in the background first half yeah those those sort of the DNA and excitement to me of no I think in families dynamics can work out that way sometimes and one kid is more is more the front and center of that family in the focus and someone can be in the shadows so to take this this young woman in the shadows and let her come out and become the heartbeat of the movie was really really exciting and just another part of I think it's it's unique an exciting and sent about perspective you know so when we're anti the brothers perspective everything's through him and at that point his sisters not the forefront of his life right there and of course they're connected and they love each other and not said that relationships always there but his world has a lot else going on so I wanted to just feel his world through him as much as possible but then let her sort of sneak in and take over and and feel her world and and and the new sort of this quiet strength in depth that she brings the takes of the movie you know was it written in the script that their rooms were see through that they could see each other's rooms it was a little different in the script because I didn't have that door set up growing up but it was the it was the idea that hallway connected them and then we found that house with the sliding doors connecting through the thing and it was too perfect I guess the Trevor Schultz writer and director of the movie waves along with our daily schools very place Catherine the mom in the film and Calvin Harris and junior who plays Tyler our protagonist so I was going to produce we were going to questions and the thing we were saying is why didn't Tyler talk to someone as things are just really spiraling out of control all the things that meant the most to him in the world we're just falling out of his hands and out of his control why was he so why was he so isolated why did you play him so actually what was that that conversation about that I think for me it was we were really just trying to understand how does he see his father and why does he feel like he it can't speak out and I think it came a lot from like the fear that his car the I think wanna parents out of fear and he has a black sun and he's scared you know at any given moment what could happen so he could be at the wrong place wrong time and some things could his life completely changes so he's trying to protect them as much as possible with maybe too much love and when you do that you kind of past that fear down to the child so now he's like I'm fearful of disappointing you when I'm feel for a disappointing myself in so many ways so that that gap of like not knowing whether or not what is the right thing to say when is it okay to say it and if I do the wrong thing then suddenly does that mean that you don't Love Me anymore that I'm not worthy of your time yourself what starts to kind of take a toll on you so I was just trying to unpack the things that I saw in my cousins when I was growing up in their relationships with their fathers my own father in a lot of ways inches young black boys in my community and and just be honest about it you know I'm gonna diss the mini spoiler Catherine Catherine is not Tyler's biological mom we discover and as an actress and as a mom like could you hold on to that secret for awhile before we even now so what was that like for you as an actress to know that you knew this thing that the audience doesn't it's interesting because I don't I have a step mother whose probably maybe five years older than me I'm not sure Sir it doesn't the age of kind of there are things about motherhood that I think we learned and one of them is that there are many roads to being a mother and one of them is biological and so I laid her you know my love for Tyler and Emily as Catherine isn't my love for my own children it's it's the same I I have my life is you know kind of depending on how well they're doing and it's it's it's I think it only matters in this film because it is an effective weapon when it shows you kind of the depth of pain of the sun if he ever says to her anything that questions her role but really the role apparent plays in a family is about the function of loving the child and the responsibility you take for the child and so I think it's not detectable in the movie for a reason I went back and I rewatch your Tony speech and bookended by you shouting at your parents and your children yeah it's a clearly parenting and mother who is really really important you really part of who you are and I'm glad you said that because I feel like I understood Catherine better because I there was a period in my life where I thought I wouldn't have children and I think that's a journey that she probably went on and it makes it kind of a really real woman for people to relate to and there's just a painful moment when it comes up yells or you're not my mom so is someone who is it being a mom you're really invested in being a mom can you kind of explain the look on your face this is so paint what you're going through that moment for Catherine I think it's actually I don't know is that in the script.
