"Network. I'm cara swisher scotch. Ya and kiara is just show excited about the timing of these anti mask movement and saint patrick's day. Because i don't know about you. But i find that people make really good decisions on saint patrick's day really good decisions. As a matter of fact as a matter of fact. I do think when that the people who don't want to take the vaccine. I just call that natural selection. I think that makes sense this at the end. It's just masks. Just the open some steps shurmur but like it's endless progress there. Look there are just some red flags for all the ladies. Golf clubs ladies. There's some red flags that say this individual should not find purchase in your womb meaning you should not procreate with this purchase specifically if anyone ever mentions cashback in a credit card. You don't wanna make with that If somebody talks about how they're if someone is saying they're going to get the real estate license once. They stopped promoting club. That just means you should. And also if they're really into saint patrick's day that means do not have children with that person. Do not have children with anyone. Also who in any way says. I'm gonna. I'm not gonna take a vaccine. That means rancher knock released knock brazilians like honestly it's like. I literally think of like our founding fathers and like they they had they have they had issues over. This it's gotta get. Cannot i just mom. My mom had to carry around or my mom's father. I should say carry around this weird mask gas mask with ears on it. London as as messerschmidt's where raining knelt down. They had to carry around ridiculously clunky. An mask in case a gas alarm went off but know to wear a cloth mask into walmart is tyranny. Tyranny governor abbot. get your head out of your now. Deserved i feel bad for the people. It's like even the ones that are cheering this on. Feel bad you're stupid like be stupid but don't be stupid anyway. Speak let me just contrast it with dolly parton. Who's seeing queen did an astonishing she. She took the song. Joe lean sang vaccine vaccine. I'm gonna sing like dali. She's amazing. Rebecca will put it in. It goes vaccine vaccine that scene. That see i'm begging you. Please don't hesitate. That seem that seem. That seem that. See once you're in that submit to. I think she should like tape. The song vaccine vaccine in the joe leans since she wrote. Joe lean and then release it and give the money to something lake. But she's already given money because she helped finance the maderno kobe to vanderbilt. The cohen nineteen vaccine research. She finally got the she waited in line. Like i love dolly parton. I want to run entire frigging country. She writes song. She's a great entrepreneur. she's kind she's like she listens to every side. It seems like everybody likes her. So i just. I love dolly parton and speaking vaccines a president biden announced. It'll be enough vaccine for every adult in the us by the end of may and by the way district government announced that it's changing their system. Because i had so ill served. Its set that citizens so now. It's a two step system where you register And then you. You don't have to do this. Sort of hunger games vaccination thing which is going to be great So there's it looks like things are you know i gotta say i give the government a hard time but they moved quickly in salt and fix the problem or trying to fix the problem. So more people get scenes in their arms so a fast moving government is always a good thing and this looks like are we will be getting The more people getting these vaccine by the end of may So you should go back. And listen to tuesday pivot episode interview with andy slava. The white house. He's a white house senior adviser to the covid response team. So those are all you know mask the. You're just gonna make people sicker but get a vaccine. Then just get vaccines in your arms. I don't know what to say if you really need to do that with mask. Get yourself a vaccine. That is coming to you much sooner. So so what else is going on. I broke twitter spaces yesterday. Did you hear about that. Same or Well twitter has spaces which is a competitor clubhouse. It's actually very good. I enjoyed it. And i like it. Because it's everyone's like oh clubhouses one. I'm like but all my staff is on twitter and like like it attracted a thousand people. It was really something. And i got What happened is i went on. I i says one of the doing one of my time may be soon i want. I want. that will be good and and we can cut people off. That's way favorite part. Describe discuss based artist anymore many more than competitor. I would say and and what i actually really like it. I really like it's You go in. And then everybody shows up you it tweets out so you're followers can see it and you can just let certain people speak people you invite to speak or you can let everyone speak or just everyone who follows you speak. That can be really noisy and only ten people can speak a once. I think the first ten people will get there. But you know what i did is i let nobody speak. And then i clicked on and made them speakers essentially as they had questions when they made requests and then every now and then someone i saw in the room. I made them as speaker and they spoke and so. Did you have a topic. Well interesting because i broke twitter. What happened is there was. They had a an update and at and not everybody can only hear my part of the of the of the conversation and not last year involved in most people can just hear cara just here cara accepting this show. "The latest death total is more than a number sometime. Today we reach five hundred thousand and that number of debt is where npr's alison. Aubrey begins our regular update on the pandemic alison. Good morning. good morning. I'm recalling Our conversations almost a year ago when people talked about maybe sixty thousand people would die. Maybe one hundred twenty thousand people would die. We're we're almost ten times past that. Sixty thousand yeah. The loss of life is stunning. I mean for the first time in decades life expectancy the. Us has declined by a full year. Steve due to the death toll from covid on average. Now americans can expect to live seventy seven point eight years down from seventy eight point. Eight years and the decline is even steeper for black americans and for latinos. Dr anthony fauci spoke about this death toll on meet the press yesterday. It's just it's it's terrible. It is historic. We haven't seen anything even close to this for well over a hundred years since the one thousand nine hundred. Eighteen pandemic almost unbelievable. But it's true if this is a devastating pandemic and is now behind us. I mean new cases and deaths or declining the virus new variants continue to circulate. So that's why there is a rush to get as many people as possible vaccinated. I'm just thinking about the reference to the nineteen pandemic. i looked at six hundred. Seventy five thousand dead. We can get there even with all the advantages of science that we have in this pandemic one of which is the vaccination though. How's it going you know. Nearly forty four million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine but last week is really tough. Due to the extreme weather shipments pfizer and the during a vaccines were delayed. Some six million doses were held up so lots of people nationwide had their appointments canceled and are now scrambling to reschedule. I spoke to the mayor of santa ana california the census sarmiento. He said their vaccinations site which had just opened. For the first time. I had to then close. Shut down after running out of doses due to these shipment delays. Not only does it cause confusion. But we've been the most hard hit and we have largest number of latino disadvantage underserved communities it so it has been difficult. But you know we're optimistic that that is a temporary short interruption. He says the vaccination site should be back up and running in the next few days. This pending the arrival of more doses. Andy slava dacoven adviser at the white house. Said we will be able to catch up this week. Many sites will have to extend their hours. Will the government be able to increase the number of doses beyond just catching up. Yeah i mean beyond getting through this backlog of doses from the delayed weather the biden administration has told states to prepare for more volume. This week i spoke to claire. Hannan of the association of immunization managers. She says there will be boost in doses sent to both pharmacies and to the states..

"White house senior adviser for kobe. Response andy slava had a very hard time answering question on msnbc when he was asked so You know california has not actually done better than say florida when you look at the actual numbers even though california has just completely decimated their economy by shutting down all of these businesses He could not tell you. Don't know why he has the title. What is a senior adviser for coverted. Covid response usually when you are the senior adviser for kobe response. You want to actually have a response that makes sense. Andy couldn't cut it here. It is contrast states. Like florida and california california basically in lockdown and their numbers. Aren't that different from florida. Good morning stephanie. We understand that we think we can predict. That's just beyond a little bit. Be under explanation. What we do know is that the more careful people are the more they mask social distance and the quicker. Vaccinate the quicker. It goes away and the less it spreads but we have got to get better visibility into variants. We don't know what role they play. large events etc but You know this is a as we all learned by this time. This is a virus that continues to surprise us It's very hard to predict and all around the country. We've got to continue to do a better job. And i think. I think we are but we're not done yet. So there it is white house senior adviser for covert response giving a response that does not include anything having to do with science Just absolutely nothing. I always know that. They're secretly panicking. If the response is good morning by by just saying a bunch of things. While i think of something in my head to respond with hello how well. How are the kids. Great weather it is. It's pretty so on one hand. I watched this and i'm like god this is this is really pathetic and then on the other hand i watch it and i'm like enjoy america. Enjoy because there were far too many of you say what you will about the results of the election which i won't because i like for this video to stay on youtube but there were still far too many people who thought that this would be a good idea because we had a president who was a big meaning on twitter. Said mean things on the thing is. Her question was false to begin with because the numbers aren't close in california and florida. The numbers are significantly. Worse and california. And i've drank at in florida. There's this place that go get a bloody mary. It's crab crawling it's fantastic. It's always a packed bar because it's like twelve bucks for the crab claws scallops shrimp. It's a whole thing. Anyway i like going there for that and hanging out with the the string. hold on. eat the meat you have to. You have to correct neil. it's fantastic. It's in the bloody mary. So it's got the tomato. It's fantastic really. Yeah that's great. Okay but you can go to florida and get those you can hang out with people and not wear masks live your life and not get covid and not die from covid runs out as opposed to being locked down and living in fear. I think this is amazing. But i'm sure. Stephanie really will be corrected. I'm sure she got a lot of mean emails from the white house. They like to build destroy you. What did the fire we destroy. Yeah i will destroy you. Which is which is a common as i guess because andrew cuomo used it as well democrat. They want destroying. That's what they wanna do just destroyed. Tj clo- no longer with no longer with us yes. He has resigned. Black lives matter. Visiting my dad enabled florida for thanksgiving. And there was like no really masks wearing social distancing not really although it was lame for thanksgiving like we had somebody accompany us like help us get our food from like whatever you know fancy place he lives and it was kind of lame but barreda. Oh so here's what he was he stays and it's like resort like that's not an folks home. It's like where you live if you retire if you have money or whatever tire retirement community retirement yet area and you have. Somebody was going with you. Put your food on your plate at thanksgiving. And so i had to confront my own eating feelings i was like can i have more stuffing and then they look at you. They kind of judge you forever. How much but you have a spooner basically have person who accompanies you around the table around the buffet and you have to say more and then they look at you like you're fat. I've been going to this buffet at this dive bar in grapevine for a while now and i love it. I still haven't gotten channel. I mean i love it down there. It's like shady shady salad at this smoky bar and i love it so So back to the news of the day so so slavic slab at however you say his name he said ou he said what we do. The more careful people are the more they mask and social distance and the quicker we vaccinate the quicker goes away in the lesson spreads and i'm like literally literally everything you said there no science to back it up wanting you said there has absolutely no evidence but it sounded very convincing other than that would have given him more credit. If you just started screaming trust the science of screaming fans. I mean what. What are you talking about the quicker. We vaccinate the quicker. It goes away you also have public health officials who are saying even if you vaccinate you still have to hunker down. You still have to wear masks what we have these various out here Which you know are could be even worse so you still need a social distance. You still need to mask. It's like what are you talking about. What what they're talking about is there's a lot of money and fear and got to keep that ball bouncing kenya. Keep making a keep. Keep those checks come in. What's that covert adviser guy going to do. If cova goes away. Anthony fauci gonna do the president right. I mean these guys have to continue this narrative order to stay relevant and it's it is very incredible. What a giant industry. This is created on top of the vaccines the masks. Even just the masks itself like people don't realize it and you're like holy crap we've just created a million dollar industry multimillion dollar industry on masks billion dollar deal with a company that may or may not be linked to china. I'm not even making that up. It's ninety million dollar deal. I mean this is a billion dollar industry and it's ridiculous. There are vending machines. Airports to sell mass. It's disgusting meanwhile. The biden administration says that they're very serious about handling covid. We we have to do all of these things. We have to mask until the year. Three thousand eighty three. We have to social distance forever. Kids can't get back to school. Our children cannot get back to school. They're suffering they're going to you know the hospital. They are having a mental health crisis. Meanwhile they're just letting people pour in at the borders no cova testing no nothing because that would probably be inhumane. Republicans on the house oversight committee are coming down on the biden administration. Pretty hard about an impending health crisis at the southern border. They are warning that reckless policies and rhetoric from president. By are of course fueling it. We've seen this happening time and time again. The last several months all of these all of these..

"Welcome in the bubble. This is Andy Slava Anzac. You know that somebody contacted me. Listen to the show and didn't know we were related. It's probably because I go by Zach on here. Zach's facts and in the beginning. Don't really say my last name. We haven't pointed out to people that you're my son people just. Think you're talented. PODCAST who? Happened to be working with. Well. I thought we sounded like, but clearly we don't. So the voices you just heard are some of the most distinctive voices in our culture both New, York borough voices Dr. Anthony Fauci and our guest today Senator Bernie Sanders Senator Sanders is going to be A. Sort of a surprise guest on the show. He and I had a chance to talk this week. About a very exciting initiative. He and I are working on which we will lay out for you on the show and has a lot to do with how we successfully combat this virus together, and we talked about a number of other things which were great as well. I think the big talker around the country now is of. What's safe and what's not safe to do? We have a kind of new focus around the southern states where I think people are indoors lot. That's because of something that we're going to talk to Zach. About which is you know when people are indoors the virus? Spreads more, so we'll talk a little bit about that. We have been doing some work this week to get states and cities to close down bars. Don't be mad at me. And still think they can do things to go and I know that it's tough on the bar. Owners and we're GONNA have to do what we can't support them, but unfortunately it's a source of a lot of spread so things get colder near you and you end up indoors because of the cold, then things may look a little bit more like they look in Arizona and Texas where you are so be very very very vigilant. We are not through this thing yet so Zach. Let's talk about aerosols, Asian..

"We passed in the Senate, the cares act, and then a follow onto the cares. ACT BACK in March. I said at the time will need to take a snapshot of where the country is in July see. What kind of progress is being made by opening the country? Get an assessment of what did or didn't work, and a cares act, and then make a decision about whether to do phase four. We may well do that and we do. It will do it in July. Will come in the bubble. This is Andy Slava. And Zach. Zach the voice heard before mine and acts. Was that of Mitch McConnell Senate Majority Leader and he was talking about Congress's plans or lack thereof to continue to provide support for the public relative to Cobaine Teen Relief and that's going to be a big topic in July and indeed the topic of our podcast. Today is going to be Congress and what Congress needs to do, what Congress owes us. Our guest is Joe Kennedy. Who is congressman from Massachusetts who is also running for Senate in Massachusetts? Part of the Kennedy Family? And I to tell you a little bit about how I'm feeling. I woke up this morning. More pissed off than usual. And I'll get into a probably with Joe when we're talking, but I really feel like there are so many people in this country that are being. Let Down Right now, and probably even more than that. I'm pissed off that the effort isn't really being made I think if I saw. Our leaders trying and failing. I would probably feel a lot better. Than I do when I feel like we have leaders who just don't care or who are seeing things through their own prism. Now I have pledged to make this as apolitical of podcast as possible. and. I can tell you this. The politics don't matter to me as to WHO's in charge who's making the decisions? When it comes to responding to this global pandemic, I think anybody with the compassion, and the competency could do the kind of job that we need I do think part of what I expected of myself is when our leaders are not doing the right thing. As much as possible to try to step up and hold them accountable. Because what we do from here is all on us and look I. Don't expect perfection. I don't think projections possible. I think too many tough decisions to be made. But I think the public is facing a situation where you know as this month drags on, people are going to be facing eviction. People are going to be facing hunger as we talked about last week. With Chef Jose Andrey's people are facing all kinds of struggles, and we need our elected leaders in this once in a century moment. To step up and they started to, but I think election year politics is SORTA drowning. We'll talk a little bit about that today with Joe. McConnell speech was a little bit because as usual in saying well I know you're unemployment. Insurance Expires I. Know You may in trouble after that, but I'm not going to seed any ground until I. Get what I want out of that. Politically. Zach you know a little bit of politics, but mostly policy. You think that makes sense today. Absolutely and then we have Dennis. On for segment three. Yeah. That's right I think nothing will bring home. The magnitude of the important decisions. We make them talking to Dennis. Dennis is a disability advocate. It's quadriplegic. Is a brilliant passionate guy, and I think he will help us understand what the consequences of all of the inaction are, and what the consequences are not just on people I can because I think tennis is a little bit reluctant to talk about himself, but on everybody else's impacted by things so before we get to Joe. Zach. You WanNa fact us. Yeah so I've talked about on here a few different times about the treatment reservoir. By Amir, in some people saying I should talk more about. Decks and methods. which is another treatment which is thought to be at least as effective as reservoir? And basically it's a steroid that has been shown in decent size studies to reduce the death rate of people on ventilators by about a third and people on oxygen by about a fifth, which is very significant, considering the incredibly inexpensive nature of the treatment compared to desert. which we talked about expensive that was last week and I'm getting these numbers from University of Oxford. So wait a minute. It's act, so you're saying that there's a drug that is more effective than Rendez aveer less expensive than room disappear and yet people haven't heard about it as much why. I wouldn't necessarily say it's more effective than Rendez Aveer, because it's been studied lasts and some of the studies deserve said that's actually more effective, but I really don't know why. This hasn't been talked about as much probably because it came to people's attention later. If you remember initially, people were talking about potentially draft Sikora Queen and room desert. And a handful of other drugs that were used to treat other diseases, but this is a steroid that has been commonly used for many health conditions and people don't really start using it until more recently I think. Well, deputies been saving people's lives. Ram Disappear hasn't really show the lifesaving benefit yet. We'll definitely see but. I'm seeing. These are definitely the top two treatments, and we just don't know yet entirely which better? So, that's as close as I'm going to come having a debate with Zach actually next Monday. We're going to have the experts on the. On so we'll get to see. Any case. Those are the facts, and let's bring up. Joe Kennedy Congressman from Massachusetts..

"To willing to step in and set direction on this issue by the way the first thing i said to the to the administration when i left is this is a losing political issue we we lost on it if you take it on you will lose on it it the healthcare system is so complicated tried to make incremental progress don't try to change the world that was my original advice if i were back then i'd given attainment bicyc obviously didn't last question will healthcare be more or less partisan next year and in five years so what i think is that americans there's a there's a prime minister foreign country forget who who said to me we really admire your country the one thing we don't understand and we do differently than you in touch with a very similar kind of spirit adventure spirit to ours is that you to keep your citizens of mild state of quiet desperation around whether they're going to be able to four healthcare when they get sick we don't do everything but we try to take that off the table for people so they can be productive and do things we just we just trying to baseline they don't get everything but we tried to make sure that that's not a worry and i think what happened during the year of repeal fights was that it was it was a primordial existential crisis for millions and millions of americans who felt like their their ability to take care of their families was threatened and so i think intil that threat subsides until people feel safe and secure again this is going to be a politically charged issue it's interesting i am i worked on a republican campaign i thought healthcare would be a big issue and was told healthcare not a republican issue they didn't wasn't part of what republicans talked about in campaigns after the affordable care act it became a big issue right very polarizing what you're seeing on the republican side now is the shift back towards talking about taxes talking about economy not talking about healthcare it's not showing up as much it is a kitchen table issue but it's much more of an issue that you see on the democrat side not on the republican side so i think we may be heading more back towards the way used to be with that said on both sides medicare is just the holy grail that you don't touch medicare will always be a political issue if there's ever any fear about it medicaid is becoming an an interesting issue you know the result of the ford care act is we now have seventy eight million people on medicaid in the country it's only what fifty eight million i think on medicare it's far larger it grew enormously so medicaid is now a little bit more of an issue particularly get in the states i think the racist this time we're going to be very interesting to see how they come out because we have thirty six governors races and the republicans very much control the governorships so with thirty six races twenty six of them being republican up it is in the states that you get into those healthcare discussions not as much as you do on the federal level but those discussions go both ways on the republican side becomes about the cost of medicaid to the states and to the state tax payer so it we'll see if it's still as polarizing an issue or if it begins to align around certain programs particularly medicare as we continue to age we'll see if we come back into this about health next year what has transpired cindy gillespie andy slava thank you for joining so now we have time to questions from the audience there will be some runners with microphones i will say as moderator if you're asking a question should be one sentence initiate end in a question mark so i will point to folks question over here and while the microphone while the microphone is coming i don't have to ask the question go right ahead sir i listened to the new york times daily podcast on what it looks like on the ground these children do you think in your view that this was in a in a way a crime against humanity and there should be more than a political price pay for those inflicted this on children.

"States of care the new organization committed to universal access of care i should say welcome back to andy slava it to the saturday night live has the five timers club the ten timers club andy is our first and only two timer timer and four timer on politico pulse check i think we should just bronze microphone at this point you can't quit me why would i want to so let's let's get started with the question that is gripping the nation what is happening with the trump administration and it's approaching two migrants on the southwest border more than twenty three hundred children have been separated in the past two months there been placed into centers that fall under control of h h s and some of these children are very young there have been allegations that some are being forcibly drug and physicians have loudly warned of the long term life long health effects cindy andy your healthcare leaders from two different parties when you look at the photos coming out from the border what do you see breaks your heart i mean i think that's the one i probably for me has been one of the more interesting components the last few weeks as much as this country is divided everybody came together around one thing you don't take babies away from their families you don't separate children from their families and this was not a partisan issue everyone came together around this the trump administration applaud them for changing course and i think you see both sides rapidly going now let's get the twenty three hundred children that have been separated back with their parents and let's have a different policy going forward of keeping families together you're republican you're applauding trump administration for changing but you don't think the trump administration should have had this policy in the first place i think people did not realize what was going to happen and when you began a policy that separated children that's just not who we are americans i think the government for a couple years after serving the private sector in cindy's had a career both in and out of private public sector and think the thing that you always have to keep in government at all times is human empathy it is very easy to just look at the big numbers of people in the big budgets political battles but if you lose the human empathy you lose your ability to have impact in you really lose your way i think there's a lot that was rise able about this policy i do think that this is a calculated calculated policy senior differ a bit on this from the president and people the administration they reverse course after i think trying every possible way of explaining this but what area we're sydney's exactly right is right now but policy aside as we sit here today we have twenty three hundred young children and parents in this country need to be reunited we should be focused on nothing else that should be our number one priority we should be bringing together the smartest people the best people the best resources dna testing lawyers immigration digital capabilities everything and we should be every hour reuniting ten more kids with their parents every single hour until it's done the other thing if i could just chime in the other thing is it emphasizes that we need a workable immigration policy in the country and it's time actually for that to get resolved in washington however it gets resolved it is time for there to be a workable immigration policy so we need to tell congress that what a lot of it's been a lot of years and you know i don't i don't think many of us have a lot of reasons to believe that under ordinary circumstances this congress any more capable than any prior congress and doing that but i will say if the country could learn a teachable moment from what happened the last several weeks months in youth that to affect and to have people say you know what there are a lot of things we disagree over but maybe just maybe we've had a unifying moment and we can make something of it i would so strongly encourage secretary as our and others who have the power to do something about this take advantage of that i'm not hopeful but i really am encouraging that well let's let's talk about secretaries an doing congress aside the administration has a lot of power here the kids are centers the photos that you.

"What would you do if you were in charge what would you do to make this better i think you know there are several things which are very easy to to say hard to implement because it does require actual changes in laws congress has through actually act change laws for some of the changes to occur but the number one thing that i would say is and it's been said was that a couple of years ago there was a photo at the department of health and human services where top guys i was in the audience but top people in the industry from pharmacy pharmacy benefit managers to pharmaceutical company executives to to andy slava to various people on the same stage and and people when they were asked what's the number one thing that you can do it was basically medicare should be able to negotiate the price of drugs if i am the buyer i'm buying i remember that the sea oh of of kaiser permanente health group said you know i have so many employees and i have so much money that i'm going to use to buy drugs i would be in a normal situation be able to say hey i'm going to buy a hundred million dollars worth of drug from use of can you give it to me at this price the power of medicare to bargain on behalf could citizens for the best price for drugs you know you cannot make that it's something very important and that law has to be chained medicare is going to have to buy for all its citizens important life saving drugs they should have a say in what price they pay for it now there should be some faith guards because obviously they they can walk away from the negotiation.
