Are you shutting it down for the year you done. Yes shutting down for the year. I think there's only a couple more tournaments left on the calendar. Atp wise in a few challenges but we Were having to go to australia. Kinda mid december like december fifteen. Sixty something like that suspended down for the year and then and then gear up for heading over there was for you the hardest part of the shutdown and where did you spend not period. What ours far. The shutdown was just not having any idea. When we're gonna play again you know and just kind of trying to figure out schedules and you know. Should i practice this week or next week or you know what kind of preseason should i have leading into whatever. The events might be But i spent my entire time in austin. Texas home base Might you're at my wife. My dad lives here. My brothers use a lotta a lotta time And yeah i mean it was actually. A joke is is a longest time that i've spent in austin in ten years. I've been here ten years the longest you know few months. I was here back to back. Which norma down for a few weeks a month or something but you know to be here for two and a half months was fun you know. I got to see a different side of austin. I got see the hot side of austin. I never really been here. Got it in the beginning of summer. He's it's hot here. You know people are like yeah. Living for ten years. I was like i never. I never knew the side of austin so this is new yaser. Yeah this is normal. Wasn't normal for me so he asked the great. It's been great. I mean you just have to kind of just roll with the punches and take the positive out of family's not a bad thing. Yeah no hanging with family was great and again it was just. It was more decided. Like oh wait when training. Or what do i start doing you know and just not having an something to work for but but then once we on a new term coming back in a certain date that yeah we get back it knowing you though you probably never stopped working out yeah. I didn't really stop working in the gym. I love that side of it. I love this kind of trying. Stay as fit as i can be. Try to be the best athlete that i can be. Which winston can help on a tennis court whenever you start actually hitting balls so it shows where creepy where a lot of players that we talked to your base in florida and california. Tell me why austen what drew there. You know what i moved here. Ten years ago there was a coach. Grant doyle who worked the same query and ryanair said Back in a day so coach grant who i knew from a long time ago. So he was he was here and so ten years ago. I wanted to work with him. my best friend from college jeff boyd weights on his way to carolina was living here. So kinda worked out. I was like all right. I'll work with gran. If my buddy jeff and i'll just kind of dry i was doing and and yeah so it really worked out fell in love with the city You know and brain actually left after few years by the city stayed here ever since so and the next thing you know. My brother moved here about four years ago. My dad was here a couple of years ago and my mom lives in dallas. So everyone's kind of close by that's really cool. So who do you ain't with now. So now i mean my dad. So my dad coach we from years old So yeah so. I'm i'm working with 'em and and then A lot of beauty players are close by in downtown austin so ut is just the two minute drive away. "We have a very special guest on the tennis podcast for us today. Somebody who topped the world rankings back in two thousand three two thousand four he wanna grand slam title. He will forever. Be remembered for the incredible Wimbledon. Final said one of his three that he had against Roger Federer in two thousand nine at coming up to the ten year anniversary. It is Andy Roddick who's going to be joining us here on the tennis podcast. Absolutely. Delighted to have him with us. And if it's a show, you think somebody else, you know, might be interested in listening to do let them know. Here's Andy Roddick, Andy how you doing? I'm good. How're you doing very well, very well. You know, a couple of people I've spoken to recently said what does Andy Roddick do these days? So what does Andy Roddick do these days? Everything nothing. I guess. Yeah. I mean not much in tennis, unfortunately. But a couple of young kids, boy, hankers three and a half girls. TV sixteen months and bunch of different business. Ventures still running our nation in Austin, Texas, and you know, trying to manage the logistics of life with a wife who's equally busy. So it's it's it's it's all good. It's chaos dates, but but great house you say not much in tennis. Unfortunately, do you mean that I mean d- would you like it to involve some tennis? Yeah. It's not so much of you know, the thing about tennis is that you have to travel to do it right yet to travel whether it's any job. I mean, you the jobs you have you're still have to go to the content right, or if you're broad couch, and you have to be at the matches. Or if you're a coach you have to be on side. If you wanna do your job. Well, I in from I wouldn't want to take on a project and tenants unless I felt like I could give it the proper time commitment and respect that it deserved. And I can't do that right now. I'm not willing to you know, one of the things when I retired. I promised myself that I would never not control my geography in the products that I was doing for a, you know, in a moderate way, obviously I get away for day or two time. But that was very important to me when when I retired 'cause I'd centrally on the road since I was twelve or thirteen years old. So that's something I really haven't compromised on. But I I love the sport..

You talking about you think the what people remember about Seinfeld is the ending. I think one of the things they remember first and foremost is that a great series any badly and in the same with surprise ending. Was terrible on sopranos ending was not terrible. And seinfeld's not remembered as a terrible show is the end of the sopranos are where the creator is leaving it open to your nation, or is he leaving the door open for possibly a movie or a spin. He hasn't made in the fifteen years. He's not going to now. He's he's lost one of his pivotal act. And by the way, I never said that people remember Seinfeld as a bad series. What I said is when you think of the Seinfeld show one of the things you think is how badly it ended. How just horrifically awful and famously awful the end the end was I'm going back. Greg up on that when when that Seinfeld series finale, aired for the longest on for years afterward and left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths now over time, it's been two decades since that thing aired and through the, you know, the the reruns and all that people forgotten about that. But he's right for the at least until two thousand will really frustrated by that ending right? I don't think chase left it open for a movie Billy because he would have done the movie ready. You might as well. And that was that. And so how many beers? Did you have before going out there? The next time. Enough. What do you remember about being punked? You know, what I remember about that? I remember that. So I got stuck on the this landslide situation in California. And I was only there for like one day. I was in and out. I think I had to do, you know, one of the talk shows at night, and I remember it was like all this construction workers, and they let us through, but they wouldn't let us out. But I remember the the lady who is working construction gates like less throw initially. She didn't really look like a lady that would be working construction. You know, she was sort of like five seven like one hundred twenty two pounds. And that was like a I mean, that's that's a it doesn't seem like my like, my uncle rob did construction. And then we got stuck, and you know, that was up any I've been telling Dan for years me, and our producer Mike have been Talladega for years that no one wants to play John is ner that if you have if you draw John is ner you have to be prepared to play for days 'cause isn't it will play for days for as long as he needs to play on work. What was your reaction when you saw your next match was John is ner. Well, it's weird though because you play long, but the points don't laugh at longer than two shots ever. So it's kind of like, you're just busy. It'd be like if you're if you're in baseball if you just walked from the warm up to the on deck circle took three pitches and then walk back. It wouldn't be bad. But you're just you're just out there. You can't get signed back. It's just boring. It's just boring. It's not even exercise is what you're saying. Hit like I wish back in the day. I would have had like a Fitbit. I could've thought like track my steps or done something. You know, the end is like no reason to play the games out. Just go to tiebreaker and play that makes it to you. Do you hate the way tennis is gone in terms of rewarding that kind of game because I can't be fun for the spectator. I actually think it's gone..

So he's been a symbol for American of roll-on time. You you go everywhere representing American other countries. Does that go always? Well, probably not right. It's it's it's not the best. I was born in Nebraska, you know, so we got we got he's got he's got them playing a little bit. It was a rough start to the season. We played hard the whole life. You you grew up with Serena Williams, right? You've known her for a long time. That's why I thought I thought you went to prep school here. Did you not? I was in fort. Yeah. So I was in south Florida. Which is where Rick Macy tennis academy was wenches where Serena went on she moved from competent. So we've we've known each other since we were probably nine years old. What what is most amazing about her? It's it's just insane. Like, you know to see this girl that used to play on the court next to kind of all the time, and you know, people kind of see Serena's, she's this iconic figure in can kinda create attention. But, you know, seeing her nine ten years old practicing eight ten hours a day and just. I it's it's just amazing to kinda see where she's going in the world has fourth. I mean, she's on the amount Rushmore sporting figures in this country and Clovelly tennis is so lonely, Andy it's so repetitive. So monotonous, I think it's why it burns out its young. How is it? Not burned her out. I think it's weird. I'll tell a story it was like two thousand seven and she think played one or two events that year. And I remember having a conversation out loud where I'm like, listen you have to maximize every day you have to get up. You have to work you have to straighten. I just I was like I just don't think she's get enough out of it. You know and and fast forward five years. I'm burned out. I'm done and she's still playing because she played a smarter schedule. The at any you surprise. I mean, you knew growing up. So you washed are you surprised though that she turned out because I don't think many people had this. That's the Rena turn out to be better than Venus. It. You know, what's crazy is that like e okay, you can better than Venus. But you imagine being second in your family and tennis and you have five Wimbledon title. I come from a group of farmers, right? Five wimbledon. Well. And and we're still together you think they would have grown into a super team that would have necessitated any of these other super teams. Do you think von Miller is a superstar? I think he's a household name. He's from Denver. I don't think in football. You can be a household name superstar unless you're a quarterback because you gotta get the commercials. You've got to be the one who transcends with Ellen's crowd dancing with the start. My mom knows who von Miller is on that helps that kind of thing. It's not because he's in football. It's because they do things like go on dancing with the stars. So Denver's had to they've had outweigh and Tiba. Is it indeed dancing with the stars? "Then you have the big moments in big situations, and you grow into a superstar. How does do Steph nurtured because this this becomes hard when people are from a different country. We've seen it in baseball a lot with the Magog Cabrera's and the Vladimir Guerrero, you never get to really know him because they're not speaking your language. Well, enough now jerk speaks English and just took out Iman Shumpert in a way that was funny. But what I'm asking you is this. Denver has the best record in the Western Conference. That dude is completely unstoppable. In every way and versatile in ways, we've never seen of someone that size that's MVP worthy. So far like what we've seen from that, dude? And what I'm asking. You is what needs to happen to make him a superstar. Does he have to beat the warriors? You're talking about joke. Each network is on the blazers. Oh, my bed. I'm sorry. Oh that That is. is a big one. That is a big one. That's probably the biggest of fines. I'm sorry. I was talking about jerky proof positive that. He's not quite ready to be a star yet. If the people who are alleged to be experts, even though I'm not one can't get his name. Right. I think you just merged the name jerk each mean. Well, not only did I merge the names. This is the other thing. I did. Right. Because it doesn't make any sense that the joker would be coming after Shumpert. It was nurtured that went after Shumpert, right? But the question stands, though, the Denver Broncos are the the Denver Nuggets are the number one team in the conference there. The number one team in the conference. There are surprise. Yes. And when you're a surprise and your most valuable player comes out of nowhere. Generally, we salute you for the winning. We give you the credit for the winning. So my question both of you is what does this dude have to do in order to? Transcend and become a basketball star because he might be an all-star without being a star. Right. And he's really I mean, he's such a great player at twenty points a game like, ten rebounds, eight assists. I think Dan, it's what you said like he has to go on a run in the Western Conference playoffs and probably get past the Golden State Warriors for people to recognize because that's a big stage. No one's watching Denver Nuggets basketball. But they'll all be watching when Denver plays Golden State. And if you could beat that team that a lot of people will take them a lot more serious. Can't really do it without the winning. Anthony Davis has been trying. You can't do it unless there's winning. Anthony Davis remains somebody who might be recognizable. But is largely a regional star. Anthony Davis is the guy who walks into most places that aren't sports savvy, and because of his size people are like who is that right versus. I know who that is. And so I'm asking you guys. Is it just beating the warriors? Like winning around the fastball isn't going to do it right now. I think it's beating the warriors are playing with LeBron. This is why I ask you the question. Derrick rose Karl Anthony towns, call Derrick rose, a legend the other day. I don't know if Derrick rose is a legend or not a legend. I do know that the way that he got to MVP over LeBron is winning sixty games during the regular season. Even though that season he wasn't better than LeBron. This dude is doing things for Denver that none of us had any sport that produces very few surprises. There's too few MVP candidates in the NBA for somebody like that to get in the club. You know, you start with LeBron Durant. And now James harden. He's got a strike against him playing for Denver. I don't think any Denver athlete since John Elway has made a national imprint outside of his his market. That's a great point. I mean, you have hard and doing what he's doing. The exact same time. I mean, it's ridiculous James. No. But harden has a handful of very easy advantages. He dated a car dash in..

"This will make your dad the cool debt or you the cool golfer. Anybody? Yeah. Do you Merwe used to always see Andy Roddick? Yes. At taco deli at our old office, Andy Roddick is an awesome resident former tennis professional, of course, husband of Brooklyn decker. Yes. Married to a supermodel. Huge win for him. He did great in life and every. Yeah, he he's Travis we saw like three or four times and every time he'd be head to toe in in Travis Matthew, and we come back the office talk about what a cool, dad. He was. He just looked like the cool dad, and it turns out he's actually sponsored by them. A lot of wears it. Well, a lot of does the good. This is the good stuff. This is the polo your dad needs to to not look like a brownie. That's exactly right. A lot of what they've done is take timeless styles like the polo the Gulf polo and made it more up to date in modern incredible for today's standards. So yes, it will make your dad look a lot cooler than probably does in his busted as old. Polo or whatever. So. Yeah. Like my dad plays in one charity golf tournament a year. I don't think he plays golf the rest of the year, and he always digs and find some polo some Gulf Paulo he's heavily nine years. And it's just trash. I'm buying a metropolis, Matthew. There you go use the code RB twenty and twenty percents off. That's it next segment ludicrous Mus so I saw this thing going viral last couple days right tweet from a dude. Name at Bill Dixon ish. Here's the tweet about five years ago. I worked in a restaurant and ludicrous came in ordered spring rolls and sent them back when I apologized. He said don't apologize spring. Rolls are unpredictable. I think about this at least once a week into tweet. So this story this little tweet story from this guy who had an encounter with ludicrous at a restaurant, not dissimilar to the one that I had it wou- Chow. It is very similar to the one that I had. And it went viral. It was reposted all over Instagram. All the all the guys who steal great tweets like fat Jew and fuck, Jerry. I'm sure they've all put it up at this point. And it just reminded me. It's an incredible story. Because one I believe it of seen enough of behind the curtains ludicrous through interviews and videos and shit. And even with our good friends and on it that I know his personality and just from sitting five feet away from him. I'm perceptive enough where I can pick up on vibes from people and Luda just had good vibes. I could tell he is the type of Fokker who would be so chill and just say don't worry about it. Spring rolls around predictable. And that's that's the way we should all be though..
