"The loyalty is not to the bar typically not like nine times like, okay. You may have your neighborhood bar the neighborhood crowd in that kind of stuff. That's fine. But when it comes to a bar that people show up at from wherever the loyalty is to the bartenders obvious data stats, the SAF is who makes it. There were people that come back. No matter what. But it's like when at part of our Profession Ramirez like that we we create that environment and take regulars with us when we leave. I worked I'VE WORKED IN WEST Bloomfield worked in royal oak worked downtown Detroit and I've had people come to all three of them. FERNDALE DETROIT TO. In between I have had people follow me everywhere. I've Gone I've had people drive out from in Arbor Week just to spend that one night with having to even followed other bartenders. Salute saying. You as a bartender, the Halloween drive forty, five minutes. But I will say the the only other thing that would make me go to a bar is the fellow patrons. That is one other thing you know I I love everyone that serves at my home tips I'm they're paying their bills like I said but. If all of the dark side stopped going there. Suddenly I'm probably not going bets, the VIBE is different. And I feel bad, I haven't been tipsy nearly as much as I should have been over the course of all this nonsense dude is one of the few bars in the area that has a shot s-k-y. Wake to now timing was in town. That's where. We have to do so excited because. God, that's I remember I. was like. So. Do you know anything about like comic books and stuff? He was like yeah. Really quick and then and then Connecticut a picture with you dude, you don't have to be worried about it. Ming is like the most laid back chill do. School attention makes look. Let me. I love me. I accept. Well, that's the thing that was like he doesn't make it like it's weird. If people ask me for my autograph or asked me for pictures and he never does he's always like, yeah, let's do it. Cool He. That's most people should be especially as. So I got to bring this up. Then because you know I, it happened tip sees in one the ref you know, Andy Green. So we're we're at one time and Andy Green's ex girlfriend used to come in tipsy Karaoke. So we're sitting at the bar and green group or back bit back there and I turn around. "About how they got to the person that they eventually chose to drive this thing and as you can imagine it's not a decision that they take lately had something that you know you have to be chosen for and there's more of a process to it and then what you might think and and I'll get to that in just a second but we've already mentioned who this is who the driver is on his name is Andy green and Andy Greene was born in war work share he's an English born wing commander for the Royal Air Force he's a fighter pilot and it kind of makes sense that they went to a fighter pilot for this instead of a driver I mean this thing is is more or less like a jet on the ground really with wheels and and that's really sensually what is so he has quite a bit of experience operating vehicles that you know are powered by jets and and has you know the know how and the and the ability to control these types of vehicles at these types of speeds he's a good choice and you'll find out why in just a second as we go we go through this but I do want to tell you that the the one of the founders of the company here the one that you know the thrust SSC the the initiative to go supersonic in a vehicle his name is Richard noble and I mention Richard was the current record holder he is the you know the guy that drove the vehicle that was called the thrust to back in nineteen eighty three to his own land speed record on one that Andy would eventually break in this vehicle and so Richard was a course heavily involved with the choice of who would be behind the wheel for this one and you know it initially was thought that maybe Richard would do it himself the Richard decided that he needed somebody that had. even more skill than he had with this and maybe he was getting a little too old I don't know exactly what he's thinking but he needed somebody that had what he called exceptional skills in order to be able to achieve this goal and so he decided that he didn't have the skills to do this one which is pretty incredible to begin with and they needed a driver the reality is that they went to somebody you know they went to a lot of people that had experience going fast and so they they selected a group of about thirty people will thirty people apply to thirty people wanted to do it they might have gone to more than that but thirty people did apply for this and you'll find it as you might expect all drag racers all pilots that that applied but they did have to kind of decide how they're going to Whittle down this group in this of the most obvious thing to do was to give them all a sandy test and then and take the ones. this is kind of funny it did this is like a tongue in cheek thing but they said the most obvious thing to do is give them the sanity test and then take the ones who failed which I have understood. to drive a car so you know super sonic on on land as it's it definitely take someone whose a little bit out of their mind right but that I want to say too much about in these mental state at this point but I think he's fine everybody had he's fine we'll we'll find out what he went through just a moment but the fact that you again the thirty were first Nero down to about sixteen and they were given a lot of different intelligence and personality tests along the way so you know it's not just now I'm getting behind the wheel and see what you could do that was a big part of it of course they took him to several different circuits and allow them to drive you know formal race cars and all kinds of crazy things like that allow them to you know kind of show what they have for their skills behind the wheel but a lot of it was intelligence and personality tests and the reason is that they were trying to find someone that was very analytical somebody that could be trusted to make changes not only on the fly but be able to be able to help the team to be able to contribute the most to you know solving problems and and controlling the vehicle and a you know it kind of had to be a well rounded person somebody that could do all of these things all at once and do them quickly and efficiently and you know just make sure that they could trust this person's opinion as well you know that you know the recommendations of the give were were were spot on so once they got down to finally eight months they you know they will down again from thirty to sixteen downed agent when they got to eight here's the interesting thing is that only pilots remained at this point they they remained in the top eight spots so all the directories hers and some of the pilots were gone at this point so it would be is it down to just pilots at that point it turns out that they were the ones who can kind of handle like the extreme stress and discomfort and one way that they did this was they put them through a couple surprise test so they had a couple days a couple of nights where they're at this place they got the call the the center of human sciences and the team they spent a lot of time you know working on with them training and you know how they would deal with the you know the the the hot desert environment and how that would affect their mental capacity and you know whether or not they would affect them as far as you know like you know. of the decisions that they would make and as a surprise they were kept awake all night one night in the in he chamber they they put them all in he chamber and they were filmed at various times they were given computer based test at a different intervals and they were kind of that tested at that point to see how they dealt with like fatigue and stress and know how the performance was was measured at that point based on all the stuff that they were they were subjecting them to and a couple of the people you know they were there were maybe three or four people that kind of rose to the top during that and then you know after that then they did some more driving testing and just on and on and on they did they they finally got to the point where just one man out of all these contenders finally comes out on top and again it was this British Royal Air Force jet fighter pilot by the name of Andy green and Andy green and I think I mentioned this already but he was born in nineteen sixty two in nineteen ninety eight so here after this record was made he was made an officer of the order of the British Empire which is that prestigious award if you're looking for more information about Indy green and and I think you might be after you've got to find out exactly what he had to go through with all this you know for this this to this record attempt in thrust SSC you could find it all over the place of course there's the thrust SSC website to go to it's just thrust SSC dot com yeah actually just do a keyword search for him in Google you'll find a lot of information about him everywhere he's done many talks of course there's there's documentaries about him in fact I watch one is really really fascinating there is there's one that was actually a cockpit recording of the day that he made the final run the the one that was the record breaking run it's just really interesting he also is in the shop talking about it in front of another vehicle this is one of the most fascinating bits of of footage that I found of any green it because it combines both what he did in the vehicle and you know him outside of the vehicle being able to kind of like calmly describe what's happening at we had what points and it's just it's really interesting because you know he tells you exactly how he begins the run how. no he's getting up to speed what's happening at the time the radio commands that are going back and forth between him and you know the the base camp or whatever they call the the camp and of people that are there watching this whole thing from a distance of course but it's it's fascinating to see how he brings the vehicle up to speed and and that's a loan that is interesting because it doesn't just take off like a like a rocket like you would think it would get to slowly creep up to speed so that all of the the debris from the desert you know the rocks in the sand and all that doesn't get into the engines there's a certain point I think it's about eighty to eighty miles an hour you can start to really kind of you know open it up and let it go and then the speed comes incrementally faster I mean it's it's amazing how quickly this thing it gets up to speed once at speed how quickly it gains speed but it's it again it's interesting to to watch an there's a series of gauges on the on the dash that are in front of you actually the the view out the windshield is dead it's difficult to see I I would guess it would be difficult for him as well he's mostly doing this by gauges and a little bit by sight but he's got his hands on the wheel and it's it's not a typical steering wheels not round it's got it's kind of a yoke design almost answered as it left and right hand and at some point and he's gone incredibly fast at this point still gaining speed the vehicle does start to track a little bit off it's not exactly on the line it is supposed to be on and he's talking about this very calmly when he's in the shop but you know in the car he's just as common it's so impressive because here's what happens the nose of the vehicle I can't remember which direction it's headed I believe it's headed you know off one one direction of the other by several degrees and he's got a we have so much steering input into this thing you would think it would just be you know you know mashing the throttle forward and hang it on and just going straight that's it but now he's he's there's a lot of input on the steering wheel by Andy green and a lot of effort put in you know with with what he's doing controlling all this at one point he has gotten ninety degrees of input into the steering wheel so is I believe it's his left hand is on the tight like he's made a. a ninety degree turn of the wheel he's got his left hand on top of the it's it's you know in the in the twelve o'clock position instead of being over at the nine o'clock position that's how much steering input he's and he's got into this thing and he's traveling again it more than five or miles arm faster than you know a commercial jet would travel here he's on the ground on that day as in like a sandy sandy service in a vehicle with with you know with metal wheels to jet engines that are that are full throttle it's just it's it's an unbelievable moment and he maintains control and regains control and then completes the run it's it's so impressive to watch and it's a more impressive to see how he is able to control the situation and keep it you know keep it all kind of reigned in he's a he's so calm under pressure that's in that's exactly one of the reasons why they chose him and why some of those tests that they gave him early on the intelligence tests the kind of the analytical things you "And it's all in two. Now crawford. This is. One of the best matchups for Crawford. He's got seven hits thirteen career at bats against Irwin. And he takes a cutter in the dirt outside for ball property seven hits, including five singles, a double, and triple in thirteen at bats, five, thirty eight career batting average against Robbie erlin. And they got a ninety one mile an hour fastball. Right down the middle on the first pitch. He swung and missed at it. Wanted to pitch line drive over the leap of macho at third into left field base. Head Naylor over near the line to begin with scoops it up. Pablo the second and holds there. Well. Even though he felt immediately behind in the count. The ends up drilling one and it was a fastball away. Not a bad pitch by Erwin, but Crawford went right with it. And he hit on the fat part of the bad and the two men on one man out the right handed hitting Austin coming up. Andy green is going to bring in the right hander. Whistler from the bullpen in relief of Robbie. Erlin. When it's time for a change. Thanks speedy. Oil change at auto service. Your trusted oil change, tuneup, and repair experts. It's up being very nice at back for Brandon Crawford, although he did not start promisingly for him. I guess the numbers don't lie that success continues against Erling that was that looking like I hit was gonna come demanded that, but it did an that Whistler takes over. Whistler one of many right handers. And the Andres we'll Beninese guy who. Can give the Padres some length often Vang, most of the time he's a pitcher that Andy green uses to get more than just an hour or two or even just one inning. Matt Whistler has been at times, long man for the Padres and he throws his slider over and over again. In fact, Padres, give us some very detailed notes on their relief pitchers seventy percent of the pitches. They met Whistler throws are sliders. So Tyler Austin, get ready for the slider that's been his bread and butter pitch..

Here's as he talks about the ninth inning. And so it was interesting because they had first and third back and watch this morning. I and third one out and you've got Manny Machado up and he throws a wild pitch with. It was an Kinzler was on third base doesn't score because they get a fortunate bounce back to romo's that forces them to put. Machado first base loads the basis, and it looked like Diaz had struck out hosmer, they call a ball onto and two. And then the three to pitch he gets the call. I thought it was strikes. And I wasn't sure if he was in a call to strike because of what happened on to and to which was called the ball. And you can imagine hosmer went nuts when he was called out on. I'm surprised they get thrown out at that point super aggressive with got right in his face. Yup. And you had Andy green came out to basically say, let's relaxing field. So today, you got Wilmer font making the cigar the start against match drum. That's three forty start today as the Mets look to make it two in a row. "Hey, I'm Brian Hiatt. This Rolling Stone music. Now, I'm in the studio with Andy green, and he has some classic rock news for us. Andy, flew out to London the other day to talk to towns of the who who announced to Andy to wrong stone that the who are planning to record their first new album in a while that Pete has all the demos ready to go. Weirdly, he didn't wait until they actually recorded. He just went to let Andy no that that they're going to do it. And in a couple minutes, we're going to let you hear Andy green talking to towns. But this is kind of a surprise like down like Andy, we want to have you come out and talk. Yeah. It was surprising. I got called up and told that they're going to go on tour and they have new songs, and they both want to go talk to me about it. So I'm like sounds good. I'll be out there. I was supposed to talk to them both at the same time in hotel room. But then Rogers travel plans change, so I ought to Pete's house. Instead, which was pretty cool. I talked him there for two hours go to Pete's house which. Was like how far out of central London roughly I had to take it was to to blinds toll the end of the tube. Then I walked mile. No kidding. Yeah. So you walk this mile at the end of the mile. You ring the doorbell towns how I was there about ten minutes early, and I didn't want to early but my phone had just died. And I was like oh shit. I can't get back to the to my phone is dead. I was freaking out from they go, wait peaking, just tears my phone. So I got his door at the time, and he answers, and he says, you know, do not or some water. I said, no. But my phone is dead. And he was okay. I can charge it. So we laughed and he had a cord, and I'm like, you beat helpful. That's awesome. He kinda showed you his studio. Yeah. At the end of it. He walked me into the basement where he's huge studio because this was run woods house back in the day. And so did he buy it directly from Ron water? I think in between there other buyers the studio state and Pete helped Ron install the studio with it's in the seventies. Obviously. So the studio was always pizza and away. And he. Points to room, and it was yes. So that's where Ted soup was recorded in everything. It was crazy. And did he have like a bunch of Qataris and stuff there was guitars, venture synthesizers, their stuff everywhere. It was really for a who fan. It was overwhelming to be down there. Yeah. I'm kind of jealous, man. Did he play you any music? He played me about one minute of one song. And what was the deal with that? They don't want me to talk about song specifics yet, which is a bummer. But that was the agreement that I made with them to he rap on. No, no, it was broken. Yeah. There's no rap. But the deal is like they haven't recorded the odham Pete recorded demo. Yeah. He recorded demos that he told me we're very elaborate and very well done and very professional, but he wants Roger to sang songs, obviously. And he sent them off to Roger and hear anything back and was kind of pissed about that. And Roger supposed to talk to spoke them. Yeah. I spoke to him on the phone, but it was supposed to be in person. Right. Yes. Yes. But it was still fine. But the main news that they wanted to get out was this tour that the going out and their payment symphonies, but Pete felt that in order to justify tour. Yeah, he's dead. He said that he's getting sick of the snarky comments from younger bands that other who are good. But there's played it hits. You know, he felt insulted by some people he told me, and he felt the need to prove the world that he can still do this. I personally find that exciting. It's been awhile since their last album, which had at least one son that I really liked on it called. We've gotta hit. And we should actually hear that. The one..
