"Drugs It's 1141 19 minutes before noon search and rescue efforts continue in Kentucky today after deadly tornadoes tore through it and 5 other states over the weekend The governor of Kentucky Andy Bashir announced the new death toll in the state this morning Our best count for confirmed deaths the most accurate count we have as of this morning our 64 kentuckians 105 people are still unaccounted for Joining us now live from Mayfield Kentucky which is one of the hardest hit areas as CBS News correspondent Jim croswell and Jim you've covered a lot of natural disasters in your years at CBS talk a bit about what you're seeing there and your reaction to it It's like while it's absolutely numbing it's as total and complete destruction as you can imagine as far as the eye can see in much of Mayfield Kentucky It's a city of 10,000 people here in the southwestern corner of the state not all that far from the Mississippi River The governor talking about 64 confirmed tornado deaths here in the bluegrass 20 of them here in graves county You mentioned missing There are still at least 8 people missing in a candle factory that was obliterated by the tornado The monstrous tornado that came through here last Friday night at least 8 workers in that candle factory were killed but again 8 are still missing right there Jim what kind of efforts are underway now to help rescue people who might be who might be under some rubble who might have survived but haven't been found yet Fire and rescue crews are out again this morning I've seen a lot of heavy machinery being brought in here working to clear pull debray off of hopefully survivors But again it's been well over 48 hours now since these storms hit And as each hour passes obviously there's less hope of finding it It would alive But as I say search and rescue efforts continue cadaver dogs have been brought in as well to help in the process I think certainly one of the immediate needs here is housing Temporary housing The governor has mentioned that at least a thousand homes have been destroyed In fact I've been a residential area here in Mayfield And again I use the word numbing It's numbing to see all that's remaining of many homes are the concrete slabs that they stood on There aren't even any signs that a house was there no piles of debris nothing And for the people there the survivors right now I'm guessing are they getting a chance to go through what's left of their homes Yeah a lot of that is ongoing you hear a lot of chainsaws of course as they're cutting up these huge trees power poles have been snapped like toothpicks I've seen two by fours embedded in cinder block walls I mean just quite amazing to see something like that So again a lot of clean up efforts already underway The governor has said this morning it could be days before we know the full extent of damage How many homes How many businesses have been destroyed and ultimate death count CBS News correspondent Jim for sula reporting live for us from Mayfield Kentucky Jim thank you His time 1144.
