Former WH Physician Ronny Jackson Describes the Stress of the Big Job
"Please give us your experience years and years in The White House serving multiple presidents as their physician. Let's stay on this issue for a second. You know, I'm not complaining, but I was in the west wing at 7 a.m., sometimes we were there till 8, 9 at night. It was a long job for just me, a deputy assistant. But for a president of any party, how stressful a job is this, from a medical point of view. It's incredibly stressful, both physically and mentally. And you have to be able to multitask like nobody's business. I mean, you know this. He'll drop down the elevator in the morning or be walking back from the oval in the evenings and the entire day that he's over in the oval in the west wing. He's got multiple people coming at him with different issues, you know, domestic issues. You know, foreign affairs issues just, you know, you have to be able to manage all that stuff. You have to be able to take that in and make decisions. And it's very, very stressful. And it's very, very fatiguing, and you're right. He had more energy than I had. We'd go on overseas trips sometimes and would fly for 13 hours on Air Force One, end up in Southeast Asia. We'd leave Andrews Air Force Base here in D.C. at 9 o'clock in the morning. We'd get there and it'd be 9 o'clock in the morning again and we'd have a 14 hour day ahead of us and we had to get off the plane and work the Secret Service detail the medical folks, the military aid and the president and we'd do this all day and it was the most fatiguing thing you can imagine. And at the end of the day, the one person that had the most energy was Donald Trump and if somebody wanted to talk to him and there were people in the lobby waiting they wanted to say hi to him, everybody else was thinking about nothing but getting in the bed. He would have the energy to go downstairs and just and talk to people like he had just woke up. So the man's got incredible energy, incredible endurance, and it's a complete opposite of what we have in The White House right now.

And let's get more on the conditions out there from storm team four's Chad Merrill. Indeed, we have the heaviest rain right now producing one to two inch per hour rain rates, which will quickly pond water on roadways between montrose and top a Hanukkah also north of the border into Charles county and saint Mary's county where flooding is occurring right now as a matter of fact that we just got to report that maple road is closed and several locations due to high water. We have that flash flood warning in saint Mary's county until later this morning, moderate rain continues east of Washington all the way towards Annapolis and Baltimore and those flash flood warnings continue until 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. this afternoon. Starting to see some light rain starting to fill back into the nation's capital, a couple of sprinkles being reported at Reagan national, light to moderate rain, north and west and the Hagerstown will move across the nation's capital here later this morning into the afternoon and we don't expect The Rain to end until 9 o'clock to midnight tonight. It won't be as heavy as The Rain that we saw earlier this morning, but it will still aggravate existing flooding conditions. So keep that in mind for the afternoon, the flood watch will likely get extended past 2 o'clock. Overnight, we will have cloudy skies after about 9 o'clock to midnight, temperatures dropping back to 70°. We stay in the 70s all day today, so not much of a temperature change. Sunday and Monday, gorgeous, mostly sunny, lower humidity, temperatures in the low 80s back to heat and humidity upper 90s on Tuesday and then showers and storms on Wednesday. Right now we have 70° in Leesburg, 70 in gay Thursby. We have 73 downtown, and we are standing tall at 70° at Andrews Air Force Base. I'm storm team fours, Chad Merrill. And he says, Listen, you were an alternate on it on a trip. I'm like a trip. You know where trip to the city. I was along God, He's like no foreign trip to Russia and this guy Mike got sick. So you know you're going, Mikey B. We'll call him, he says you're up. You want to go and I was like Russia. I'm telling you, like New Jersey is, the father said, I think I've ever been outside of training. The first time you travel overseas to a country that's not necessarily a friendly and I think we flew a C five a over there, and there's these massive cargo doors and lower. I'm telling you, I want to be dramatic, but it was like something out of a movie. The cargo doors are dropping or because we fly with all the president's cars and everything you know it's a free ride. Just jump on the plane. It's going down at lands and, you know, the guy comes on board the lead advance agent He's like, you know, Welcome to Russia was seriously was out of salt Look like something out of the movies or I'm a young kid, you know, in my twenties. You know, being overseas where the rules don't matter like they do here. There's no real rule of law in Russia. Whatever works for Vladimir Putin works me. Wasn't Putin back then? But you get the point. When you fly back to the United States, you land and J B a joint base. Andrews used to be Andrews Air Force Base. And you see that flag man? Stars and Stripes. But as we witnessed, that didn't happen. So what does happen now to the extreme ideology reporting on this for the Washington Post, Craig Timberg, and he talked about it with Cuomo's Taylor van size for listeners who might not know or be as steeped in what Cuban on believes. The followers firmly believe that Democrats worship Satan. They eat Children and that Donald Trump was the only person who could bring salvation to the United States. We saw countless que flags and symbols when the U. S Capitol building was stormed. What's the status of their movement? If you could call it that, What's the status of their movement today? You know, it never was a movement in the sense that you know the Democratic Party. My beautiful already. I mean, there's no central organization. There's no membership cards. And so we're left to judge based on what surface is really on social media, and on January 6, they surfaced in person on the capital. It's hard to know if there's if there's just like a big, loud, hard core to the to it, and then a bunch of other people who just sort of loosely following along whether it's bigger and stronger than that. It's very hard to know. Trust. The plan is one of their rallying cries online. Do some followers still believe this is part of the plan. They absolutely seemed to. Yes, there was a lot of talk yesterday. You know when? When President Trump left from Andrews Air Force Base Base, you know, there were 17 flags flying and 17 is is is, you know Q Is the 17th center in the alphabets that a lot of chatter about? That was, you know, a symbol and there was a lot of effort to kind of continue the fantasy that Trump was somehow going to either personally try up or so orchestrate some sort of triumph now that Biden's president Acumen on certainly not, you know, mainstream. There aren't like you mentioned there isn't leadership pyramid or anything like that. But there are people making money on the flags that are being sold their people moderating the forums where all of this chatter is taking place. What are those people doing now? Yeah, it's a great question. I mean, there's always been a kind of monitor station aspect of this. As with almost everything online, right T shirts and books and you name it survivalist gear, So I assume those folks gonna continue trying to make money as long as they can. You know, in terms of the moderators will have to kind of wait and see on how many of those sites state really active. You know, One of the questions were wondering about is, you know to conspiracy theories still have the same purchase on the American mind when you don't have a conspiracy theorist in the White House any longer. And for those who keep tabs on groups like you and on I was left wondering, Is this gonna be a relief for him? You know that Cuban on might be fizzling or could something you know more bizarre, more dangerous spin out of it. You know that cannon the thinking at the moment Among the sort of research community is Q and on is almost certainly going to become a smaller movement. Uh, but they were. You could become a more sort of radicalized Marilyn movement. You know, if you if you share away the people who are loosely affiliated for whom it's merely a hobby, and you're left with the people who still believe that Donald Trump is secretly in control. It's a group that if they keep talking to each other, and there aren't any sort of moderating voices they could Actually become more radical could potentially even become more violent. Kind of an echo chamber. Sort of situation. Craig Timberg with us on Common, uses a technology reporter for The Washington Post. However, he did not stand with his brothers and sisters. On the tarmac to listen to his father's speech. He was also not seen leaving the White House there his parents earlier Wednesday when they made their trip to Andrews Air Force Base. Well, as it turns out, they've been making him live on Air Force One he's been But I didn't see him get off Air Force one, either. It's unclear where he was. But his absence sent Twitter into a frenzy. Of course, it was like, you know, everybody's comparing him to Kevin in home alone. Nobody's really saying exactly Why he wasn't there or where he was. My guess is now this is an honest speculation, not not a joking one. When you have seen him briefly in public. He looks so uncomfortable. I'm sure he is, Hey looks his life as though he would rather be anywhere than in standing with his father and mother. She asked to be put in the No. No child of someone serving offices ever asked to be in that position, so I'm guessing that he just said I really just don't. I can't stand it. I don't want to do it. I can't And so they said, Okay, you know, will Will figure out a way to get you where to Air Force One just so that you won't have to be seen by the by the crowds. And then once we get tomorrow, Lago, you're grounded. My favorite thing. Those when Trump and Melania got off the plane. And he stops at the bottom of the Stairway and he's waving at people and she just keeps walking. She is done. I don't have to be any more. No more. No waving. No, nothing. Somebody you need a dynamic personality to do this job to do a job like Rush Limbaugh that ended it right. Not heard that mean, remember pitches to do this job he did your years ago. He, um, he, you know, he was able to nominate and get confirmed. Three Supreme Court justices, which is a remarkable thing for any president toe have during especially just one term, but but in the end, he took very little interest in the legislative process. If you are in journalism If you cover any aspect of politics, life itself seemed to change the moment that President Trump's Twitter account was cut off. Well, my kid's thin asked why I would ever look at Twitter again. So did you have an answer to that? Tim? Ricky, I don't have a good answer. I don't have a good answer, but but certainly You know, he really in the last couple of weeks has shrunk from the presidency has shrunk from the ceremonial duties of the job. I mean, in many ways much of the presidency included things that President Trump had little interest in. He He had these legislative achievements. He, um, he, you know, he was able to nominate and get confirmed. Three Supreme Court justices, which is a remarkable thing for any president toe have during especially just one term, but but in the end, he took very little interest in the legislative process. He He In many ways, he just let the presidency wash over him. He picked fights and then had to solve.

Yeah. Yes. Life boycott the Olympics. Hostages in Iran. Don't forget the marry Alito's Yeah, that too. When Castro emptied the jails, Yes. And he said hey, did on these boats and go toe to go to the United States And Jimmy Carter said Yeah. Come on. Yes, he didn't accept him. A lot of people got killed. The president has not left yet. He was supposed to leave at 7 15 this morning and head to Andrews Air Force Base for this big 21 gun salute, then, of course, leave from there. You go to Mara Lago in West Palm Beach, But it's now 88 that green door with the red carpet, which he will exit eventually to head towards the helicopter is still closed, and there's no sign of President Trump. Maybe he had some Raisin bran this morning. He's in the bedroom. These Yeah, take care of business. But look, there's a crowd of massing at joint, Uh, Andrews Air Force Base, and there's a podium so he's going to speak. He's going in addition to the 21 gun salute and the You know, Good van, That's good military. We'll wait for a biting to be sworn in in about four hours as the 46th, president of the United States, our next guest. Can't say enough good things about this guy nearly four decades as one of the most respected politicians really in the history of New York out on Long Island, he has just recently stepped away after a brilliant political career. But of course, worked alongside Donald Trump some very important stuff, So he's got a good perspective on what's going on today, and he's a dear friend of ours. The great Congressman Peter King. Good morning, Peter. How are you, pal? I'm doing great shit. How you Bernie? Hasn't it could be a lot worse. Thank you, Congressman King. So, what do you thoughts today? Peter? You You did do a lot of stuff alongside Donald Trump working with homeland security. And you know you were very good on this show for the better part of four years when you had to be critical of Trump, and you were like me. You were critical. You gave him credit when he deserved it. So what are you feeling now, as he gets ready to exit, the White House and the new president said to be sworn in in about four hours. Uh, First of all, thanks for having me on. I wish I have several feelings one. There's a sadness that he's leaving under these conditions. There's also though trying to look at the overall picture. Great job, but he did. I mean, you're right here in Long Island. He was able to stop them is 13 all the murders they carried out? He got involved. None that one murder in my congressional district. Since President Trump get involved what he did in the Middle East that had been tried that had changed in 40 50 years, the Abraham records where we have these different Arab Muslim nations. Actually dealing with Israel. That's a start. But it just gets lost in all of the confusion, also his appointees to the Supreme Court to be the most capable judges ever We go down the list, the economy was the strongest ever The first three years that we get it with the pandemic, so there's somebody solid achievements. I guess my sadness in a way is that many of President Trump's wounds were self inflicted. For instance, I think after the election when he should have said, was that he has serious questions about his going to challenge it in court. But the meantime he's gonna prepare the transition in the event of Joe Biden wins. Constantly talking about stealing the election just built up this anger and it made it hard to get things done. And also again I'm January 6 to get the crowd revved up, but more than that, not to call them back. Once they started, and he said it overall, I think use from now when people look at his record, and they put aside some of his, you know, wise remarks, which you and I growing up in New York. You can glad this stuff all the time. Nationally internationally. It didn't fly. Well, you know, with the deep state or the establishment, whatever you want to call it on s. So I think that's sort of tonic tamales in office. But again, I think, looking back out of the eastern up other than what happened in January sex that was really terrible. But other than that, And also the fact that he was not really a good loser if you will, but his record is solid achievements for three years and 10 months are gonna be looked upon ideas to stop you much in January. 6. Are you holding him somewhat. Mitch McConnell blamed them yesterday. He said he provoked the crowd. Are you saying that he's to blame for January 6th? I I think he may be the blame, but I don't think he intended that. I think he was so caught up in it, and he didn't want the crowd to march. I think assumption was that they would share and there would be outside of the ICA. A valley in crowd. Hey, didn't only give anyway. Ever expected the violence to break out that was not. What he was able to do is no in intelligence is no information he did. I think you should be more careful in what he said. You realized when you in public life That people sometimes with a Willy, what you say others will try to take advantage of you, but no, I don't think he ever thought that was gonna happen once it did start each other, much quicker to stop it, But I don't think it anyway. He sanctioned that encourage that I wanted it to happen. Congressman Peter King on the Bernie in situ as we await. The president has just exited the White House. Congressman King He's just left with Melania. He's standing on the red carpet as he approaches Marine one..

"Now in for Jeff Wagner, Wtmj Scott Waris. Apparently, apparently, the lesson still has to be taught two men across America. Men across the globe, but specifically American men. You take a picture of your junk and you send it. Via text via email. There's a really good chance you're going to get in trouble for it. And yet it happens. I mean, if you you may have heard of their in sports, the New York Mets general manager Sent a photo of his junk. To a female reporter. Almost five years ago. ESPN did a big investigation had the big story yesterday and he is now fired as the Mets general manager. He was just hired like a few months ago, too. Don't Don't. Just saying Guys if you're out there And you're doing this stuff. Knock it off to stop. They give you a dozen reasons why to stop. But how many lessons do you need? You don't Even if it's to somebody, you think? Look, it's how often do you see a celebrity? Get in trouble with a video or something. You just You don't need any of that stuff. You're going to get yourself in trouble. It could come back and could come back and bite you. You could lose a job over it. It's just something that you've got to realize is not worth it. And it apparently Uh, I don't know his name I learned from this. Did anybody learn when Brett Farve did it? Farve. Be penalized for it if you have a fine or something. It fired, do it. Let's see. Well, obviously Anthony Weiner, he Suffer the consequences, right? We know that. The GM of the Mets. He wasn't the GM of the Mets back then, obviously, but Mm hmm. Other people. You know, Jeff and Fox Point makes a good a good comment. You're in the text line. Generally, Jeff says that's true. But Farb seems too, for the most part, been forgiven rather quickly for hiss. You know, you're kind of right about that, Jeff. It seems as if when Farve did it. Now it's become just like a joke. Oh, you remember when far of this whenever they took a picture sent it to a female. How is that any funnier air quotes here because it's not funnier than this guy who did it to a female reporter, the female reporter. Who was foreign. We don't know the name or what country and she didn't know how to handle it because there was something lost in translation. Although let me tell you something, You may not be able to speak the languages fluently is the person who sent you the picture, But you send a picture like that. That kind of surpasses all language barriers. I'm just saying, but Billy guys Don't just don't don't do it. It's it's wrong on so many levels. Mean again, even if you're doing it to your wife. Somebody that you are wedded to for the rest of your life. You send anything electronically. And It can be found. Okay. We don't have to talk about photos of junk. But But is that not one of the side effects of the Internet, You post something? You post something on Twitter on Facebook on Instagram something not nearly as explicit. But you post something and you You better expect. Or at least recognize that It could be used against you at some point, even if it's something as You know? Innocent as a job interview. And I would imagine, and I haven't done any hiring pretty much my entire professional life. But I imagine one of the first things Boss, does you Google somebody right? You Google an applicant. You check them out on Twitter. What is their social media platform, and it lives on forever. It lives on forever, including five years later. In your text, a picture of your junk. Yet. You know, we're gonna have another story like this. Hmm? I don't know how long how long before we have another story like this? That makes national news? Probably a few months. Probably not a year. Some people make the mistake. And we'll have the conversation all over again. Okay? Between now and three o'clock we are going to do Some Looking back, We're gonna reflect on the Trump presidency. Fingers crossed here to reflect on the trump presidency. And we are going to look ahead to the Biden presidency because tomorrow at this very moment, we will have a new president of the United States. Tomorrow morning. There's going to be the send off at Andrews Air Force Base for the president. I don't know if you followed any of that. Apparently, they're looking for bodies. So if you're gonna be the Washington area tomorrow, and you're looking for something to do pre inauguration, maybe you want to go to the Trump send off that air Force Andrews Air Force Base. I've read a story that Anthony Scaramucci, he got an invite, and he said, if I got an invite, they're clearly just blanketing everybody who's emails in the system and inviting them and a lot of people apparently reportedly A lot of people are declining the trump farewell ceremony because They've got a report to the airport at six in the morning in order to get through security and get in position and so on and so forth, so Tomorrow. At this time, it will be President Joseph R. Biden will have coverage throughout the morning. We will have live coverage of the inauguration. The oath of office for him And for Vice President Kamila Harris will have the speech will have some reaction and we'll be all over it tomorrow as you Can expect as we have been for many, many years, so we're gonna look ahead but we're also going to look back..

An Interview with Air Force One Pilot Col. Mark Tillman
"Air Force One pilot Colonel Mark Tillman is here to join us this evening. When you're hearing this he's actually here to present in the museum on the evening here of nine eleven Colonel Tillman? Thank you so much for making the trip up here to spend some time with us now. This is incredible credible. I've always wanted to come up here and very happy to do it. You're a great bunch folks amendment of we'll have so far well. You have even seen this evening it uh-huh well. How do you want to do you want to kick things off here? Sure absolutely mark. If you don't mind I always like to at anytime we talked to anybody who's WHO's actively involved in flying aviation has has certainly as we are I like to know how it started. Do you have an earliest earliest aviation memory. Were you a kid building. Models and looking up on airplanes flew over. How did that spark hit you? I definitely as a kid I was always building models but the biggest challenge for me was my dad was construction worker and we just didn't have the money to learn how to fly so there was a north Perry airport was just outside of where we lived in south Florida but it just as my dad said someday. You'll get your chance but right now we just don't have that kind of money so good watching them all the time. My father used I actually he built runways use a construction worker that would build roads and runway so I was always out at the airport of watching a mu- repave the runway build the runway at Fort Lauderdale North Perry whatever so had to wait for the military so I joined the military. ROTC Lane University and then when I graduated I literally was a chemical engineer in the Air Force made me a rocket propulsion engineer until I could get a pilot training plot but two years later I got the piloting slot started out after pilot training as a C. One thirty pilot and then was ploughed back in to be a t thirty seven instructor pilot after that went back to Williams air force base and then slowly just kept flying and eventually the move actually applied to the eighty ninth airlift wing out at Andrews Air Force Base flying the Vice President First Lady Senators Congressman was selected elected and after the first year they're lucky enough to have the guys at Air Force One have me fly the backup on a Gulfstream three and from then on slowly. I got hired by Air Force One so it's about eighteen years at Air Force One allow so so you started you would've started on the T. thirty-seven for primary training than the C. One thirty then back to the t thirty seven sacred definitely that was the progression at what was it what was it about the the eighty nine th airlift wing which is which handles all all the VIP flying for the air force correct. Yes what was it about that job that attracted you you know they they had the new shiniest business aircraft at Gulfstream threes and fours and they had seven Oh sevens lot of history there and for me the goal was always you know fly heavies. I I love flying the t thirty seven thirty eight going fast having a fast pants on but I love the idea of jumping into a cargo plane or a heavy and going around the world and see in places and say go into the eighty ninth for me was as you know there's another opportunity to go around the world fly. Dignitaries and five star hotels have a blast while you're doing it and just continue on my educational locational flying surveys great. I'm still just going to be chuckling at Fast Pansa like I'm lucky if I remember my adult pants. Somebody is hopefully going to have that. Call sign here in what I have to ask was the first day you came into the eighty ninth aircraft of course many of them have the special paint job Abban it. How did you feel walking in the door starting to see those aircraft? They had to get pretty exciting right. Now is the greatest feeling ever I mean it was you got hired by by a group of people that were the best of the best and they they felt that you could make the cut so good and as a Gulfstream three guy seeing the blue and whites and coming coming in flying senators congressman all the VIP's in Washington DC was truly an honor and nothing wrong with staying clean while you're flying line as well and you stayed in your dress uniform and while you're flying you get a nice meal. Get a chance go to the restroom. I joke around because my my son's a growl or pilot in the navy so he he's a fighter guy and that's all I ever hear from him is you know how dad you're just a pilot where he's an exceptional channel pilot because he can he can land on an aircraft carrier all the time but you know I'm always telling him you know when I turn around and I have a great meal and get a chance to go to the restroom he he's not but we have a good time with the how in the world did did an air force guy ever. Let let us get end up in the navy is the craziest thing ever he was going in the Air Force National Guard and then they delayed as pilot training slot by two years so he we weren't Phoenix scenic send I came home from flying one day and he said Hey I just went down to the recruiter downtown in the navy. They say they can get into pilot training next month I just have to go through T S era. OTC or whatever the navy calls it and sure enough they they loaded him up and he was often. He was ready to go so he's he's been he's been loving it. I mean life is so all my navy friends and flying with those guys is always different but now that I've got a son do it. It's it's incredible. Some of the things those guys do a tween. He flies at the Hornet guys. I guess I guess the crawler is pretty much hornet with the with the gun but he's he does a lot of crazy stuff tough and he's deploying a lot and he's happy skit on the planet because he's flying four or five times a week but we thank you for your service but but by extension your son Your family serves thank you in that way and that's that's certainly greatly appreciated it. He's doing a little bit of a little bit of reading the other day about some of the history of presidential pilots and obviously on on the twenty five or what we think of traditionally as Air Force One first and foremost for those that don't know what's important point that that simply a call sign that any anything other within a marine or navy aircraft that the president's aboard any air force aircraft is given that Call Center Force One correct definitely so President Bush flew the Navy Levy plain out to the to the Rim Lincoln that was navy one so it was at the first time we'd ever had a navy one those my understanding and as a navy did it it it was hilarious because they had like five of them all lined up case of a one broke the next one broke and the next one kinda worried about it. We're not gonNA screw the navy brother really worried about that. I can only only imagine and and obviously the the large airplanes have you know on the seven forty sevens were excited when I think of his. Vc Twenty five was that a three person crew flightdeck were you still maintaining a just have a flight engineer some forty seven the VC twenty-five seven forty seven two hundred so it has actual flight engineer position to pilots and a navigator position. Oh it was four women cruel frontier so anyway with with no disrespect to the to those but when you think about what I'm going. I'm going with all this. Is We think about the the command pilot position sort of you were part of a crew but but but you're sort sort of the face of the crew as that once you're in the left seat and when we talk about presidential pilots there's only really been a handful of people in that position when you going back to sort of the end of the Roosevelt administration before he died and independence is the number I saw it with something like it seemed impossibly small like only fifteen sixteen people or or something like that would have been sort of left seat command pilot on an air force aircraft carrying the president and that was powerful to me to the small small number nine so that the presidential pilot I was number twelve so you're assigned to the president so you're actually assigned to the president there seven the other pilots in the unit. They're all presidential pilots but tradition is the presidential pilot numbered pilot is going to do all take off and landings from the left seat because you're you're you're basically assigned to the president and your deputy. When you're GONNA will do all the take off Atlanta from the left seat with the president on board? Everyone goes through the a civilian training as a captain. We all get captain qualified so you can always fly from the left seat every one of us but the experience level so high so you've done the presidential pile on the left seat. You're co-pilot is equally as qualified. He's not a youngster he's been in the military minimum of ten or twelve years flying heavies and so he he or she is all set ready to go but there's always a backup plan as well so even though you're not in in the left seat of the primary aircraft. There's a good chance you'll be in the left seat of the backup aircraft command of that and that's how you get the majority of train in the seven forty seven interesting so you said you were number twelve now. Is that a numbering system that goes back forty so that's it goes back to the days of when they basically when the seven oh sevens came online they're hundred eisenhower. Truman right away works away on re to present day so so if you were the the twelfth then that means that before you started or just as you were about to start more people had walked on the moon than Bennett presidential pilot that really blows my mind yeah. It's it's truly an honor. That's the way I I look at it as you know. It's just how the the unity the tradition of the unit is you know and same with the Marines Marines and Marine One.
The Rookie Pilot Who Was Ready to Give Her Life on September 11th
"Eleventh two thousand one Lieutenant Heather Penney waits on a runway at Maryland's Andrews Air Force Base. He's ready to fly that morning to commercial airliners crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York. A third flew into into the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked airliner seemed to be hurtling toward Washington. Penny had a simple mission. Stop Stop It. She didn't have ammunition missiles though she didn't have anything to attack the plane with except her own plane so that was the plan penny and her commanding officer would fly their fighter jets straight into the hijacked jacked. Boeing seven fifty seven penny was one of the first generations of female combat pilots in the country. Her nickname was lucky she grew up smelling jet fuel. Her father other flew in Vietnam. Though she earned her pilot's license in college at purdue she had no plans to join the military. She majored in literature. She wanted to become a teacher but something else was also holding back a career in the air. Combat Aviation wasn't open to women aw in graduate school that changed and so did everything for Penny. She signed up immediately. She would would become a fighter pilot just like her dead in the fall of two thousand one penny was just a rookie the first female F sixteen pilot ever at one hundred and twenty first fighter squadron of the DC National Air Guard on September eleventh they had just returned from two weeks of air combat training in Nevada. They were sitting around the briefing table. When someone popped in with news of the unthinkable couple a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers in New York. They assumed it was just some. Yahu in assessment when when it happened to the second tower they knew the situation was different much different it was but in the monumental confusion of those moments it was impossible to get clear orders. Nothing was ready. The jets were still equipped with dummy bullets from the training mission after the plane hit the Pentagon word came almost immediately of a fourth plane taken over by terrorists. It was clear that someone I had to fly weapons or no weapons Colonel Mark Sasseville Barca Penny lucky. You are coming with me. She climbed in and rushed to power up the engines. She didn't have time to go through the routine checks on the plane nor did she. You have time to think about the fact that her father now a captain that United Airlines could have been on one of the hijack flights the the crew chiefs still had his headphones plugged into the fuselage as penny nudged the throttle forward he ran along safety pins from the jet as it moved ahead soaring into the air. They strategized how to hit their target and survive. They hadn't of course ever trained to bring down on airliners but their chances at ejecting just before impact were slim. Penny believed that if they were successful in their mission this would be the last time she ever took off penny and Sasseville never had to complete that mission after flying for hours the two learned learned that United Ninety three had already gone down not in DC but in a field in Pennsylvania the passengers on that flight who learn from loved ones on the ground about the other hijacked planes were willing to do what penny in Southville were going to do anything they fought the terrorist Orissa forcing them straight into the ground penny and Sasseville flew the rest of the day clearing the airspace in escorting the president looking down on the country changed forever.

It's kind of like you. I don't need to really do it again. I don't think but it's pretty funny when I worked at the White House. Well let me go way back when I I was in college and I thought I wanted to go into media back then if you wanted to get into TV you had to start in radio and I didn't want to have to do my radio experience after right graduated so I got a job part time job as a country music. Dj working overnight and Pueblo Colorado and I ah I didn't really I had grown up in the West but I had really listen to country music when I was a teenager I didn't really do that so I was completely out of it I I I introduced the first night a song by Tracy Lawrence and I said and here she is with their new Song Tracy Lawrence and then of course raises Lawrence's a man uh-huh tricky. I we have to do so fast forward and during the years at the White House. I don't think I listen to any music back at all. I didn't even have an IPOD when we left. That was the technology at the time I had nothing I listen to. NPR or whatever else was happening rush limbaugh or something so Kakitumba on the news and so when I left the White House or when we all left the White House I got an ipod I guess it was and I used to travel back and forth to to New York a lot and I just started downloading country music and Dirk Bentley Song Come. A little closer was out at the time China so that's how we became a fan. Would you like to sing a little bit of but I do have the worst voice but the other thing you're talking about is I don't I'm blessed with having lots of ideas and not a lot of time to execute however so in two thousand sixteen the five went on a bus trip to go conventions. RNC Indian say and at one point in the back of the bus Greg Gut failed and I were sitting there and he was making me laugh so hard because he was just making up nonsense country songs about the five about Fox News about everything and he just had me giggling so much and I said we should should go to Nashville and record a song about the five and record it with a real recording artists and then release it for charity so three years later it came true. We have a wonderful executive producer of the five called Megan Albano. She figured it out we teamed up John Rich from big and rich who is a wonderful person big fan of forty three's as well and we went to Nashville and in one take he's saying the song that we sang the backup part. It's called Oh shut up about politics and it's not about shutting any particular person up. It was just about how politics has entered into everything sports music music theater technology. Everything's just too much and so we have a song called shut up about politics. We released it and within two hours it was number one on the country charts and then and that whole weekend it was number one in the world bigger than Lady Gaga Justin Bieber it was astounding. It's amazing it was amazing and all the proceeds go to folds of honor so we're pretty proud of it. Ninety nine cents you can download it on full. Honor does great work. We've done incredible work. We're familiar with there were pretty well and they're just such great such a great organization. That was pretty fun fun. I have a question for you off of that. Though I mean you're right politics is in absolutely everything you cannot get away from it and we talk about that a lot too. I mean even when you're going through Instagram instagram stories. It's just permeates every bit of it. It's in your life obviously multiple times a day. How do you get away from politics and focus on the thing? I feel a little a lot better than I did even from a few years ago because I've really embodied this idea that politics is what I do. It is not who I am and I have carved off my weekends and my evenings when I'm not working but but I don't go to dinner to talk about politics with people unless I agree with them now. That's GonNa sound like Oh that's not very fair and balanced view but I argue all day long and so in my personal life I pretty much. Don't I have a rule that I wrote about in the in the Jasper book which is no politics at the dog park. You're that's a safe place for me and if and even people that WanNa talk to me about politics at the Dog Park Mike Sorry I don't talk politics at the dog park. I have a policy and then laugh about it and they move on and I also carry a lot less about social media than I did. In Two thousand sixteen. I was really attacked by the Russians. Even though I didn't know as Russians at the time I remember actually coming here to the Bush Center right before the two thousand sixteen election. I can't remember what I was doing and AH chance to see President Bush and he's how you doing and I told him I had the worst professional summer of my life you know being attack and I was really kind of in the fetal position under my desk and even like my husband would say how can I help you. There's there's nothing you can do and it gave me a big appreciation for what parents are going through when their children are consumed assumed with their phone because you don't know what's being said and it's so demoralizing I was a grown woman. I've been the White House press secretary. How could this affect me so much and and I remember President Bush saying? Why didn't you call me like a really imagine if I had called President Bush and said Sir people are being really mean to me on twitter he would have said get off twitter on it solved this one's easy and actually it is easy so once you step away from from it or somebody gave me a tip to only have mentioned from people that you follow and Eric Schmidt of Google actually pulled me aside at one point in two thousand seventeen as I was explaining what it was like to be one of the people that was targeted by these Russian boots but I didn't know they were rushing at the time I just said it's overwhelming and he pulled me aside Dana? These are not real people and you explain to me how the whole system worked in Saint Petersburg and I don't know that just gave me an ability to say it doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter no so I it's weird to say that as much as politics permeating everything for me. It's probably less a part of my life than in the previous elections that I've covered for Fox. Was it similar to how you regrouped. After you left the White House taking a breath stepping away from it no not really I mean I remember the day that we'd left Andrews Air Force Base and Peter and I left to go on the trip to Africa. I leaned my head back against is the seat and I said nothing I do for the rest of my life will ever be that important or that hard and it's really true when I make a comment now. I'm not gotTA START A war. I also have a great appreciation for what public servants go through and I want to support deport them. No matter what party they're from if you're willing to put your self out there and run for office and try to do the right thing I try to be supportive. Okay talk to us about mercyships touch. You talked about a little bit when you left the West so interesting about mercy ships. There's actually a Bush connection there too okay so obviously President Bush and Mrs Bush were amazing leaders. When it came to Africa I I got to go to Africa with them? In February of two thousand eight and in typical forty-three fashion we did five countries in seven days. I got my first migraine. I couldn't even go to the Kigali event because I had to stay on the plane and two liters of fluid into my arm and so I didn't get to go to the and and I've been sad about not making it to Rwanda ever since given the statistics about pep far so many times at the podium that I thought I understood Africa and then I was just totally blown away when I went there and I came back and I said Peter we need to go for six months after the White House and he said how about six weeks so we did six weeks compromise and yeah so we did a pet farsight that's on in Fishhook South Africa and Peter and I just had this confusing time and that did help us reset our priorities and our hearts and to reconnect as a couple as well because we're so blessed here in America and you can get caught up in what about me. What am I gonNa do to the White House and just being able to have a bigger world view? After I left was great great fast forward mercy ships asked me through my speakers bureau if I would come to Dallas and moderate a conversation between the president and Mrs Bush in front of their dinner group so I said well sure that sounds great so peter and I were coming down here now prior to that I had join the one campaigns women advisory board and I had gone to several countries with them. I had also been on the Broadcasting Board of Governors under President Obama and I'd gone to Africa on behalf of of that organization as well trying to increase the amount of content of for women in particular and Africa because we found that men will definitely listen to the radio for news in sports but women will listen if it's about health and their kids so anyway it's just little bit of an effort to do that so at the dinner right before the Q. One eight with the president and Mrs Bush. I'm sitting there and somebody says well. Why did you get interested in Africa so I'm telling him than soul story that I'm telling you and then I I said just a few months ago I got to go to Sierra Leone and I went to this place called the Aberdeen Clinic and it was started by Scottish heiress us and it's so amazing they were doing fistula surgeries there and the day I was there? They were teaching the women there how to count to ten and the lady next to me said Oh she's not a Scottish heiress. Her name is Ann Gloag and she's sitting right behind you. This is a self made businesswoman in Scotland who was a burn unit nurse for twenty years but then she and her brothers started a bussing service in the UK when Margaret Thatcher deregulated the transportation sector and they became very successful and as the company expanded she took Africa and and when she got there she said this will never do so she started doing all of this philanthropy there and that's how I ended up talking to her and I said to Peter we have to go see mercy mercy ships for ourselves so that's how we got involved and it's a surgical hospital ship they do the West Coast of Africa that night they were kicking off a capital campaign for a brand new ship because they I usually retrofit and old ship and
Trump scraps high-profile meeting with Putin at G-20 over Ukraine
"In the annual G twenty summit. Trump was supposed to meet with Russian President, Vladimir Putin. But cancelled that citing Russia's aggressions in Ukraine ABC's Andy Field joins us on the KOMO Newsline from Washington, and Andy the president tweeting that the Putin meeting is off because of the standoff with Ukraine, but the timing is really interesting because of what happened today with his longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen's plea deal over the Russia investigation and lying is this a matter of controlling the optics or sending a strong message to Russia. Well, we don't know. Certainly it seems like controlling the optics because as the president left the White House on the south lawn. He said the meeting was still along with Vladimir Putin and nothing really changed between what happened between Russia and the Ukraine and then in the short literally nine minute flight that goes from the White House to Andrews Air Force base. He had changed his mind. Then tweeted the meeting with Putin is off. So something happened in short helicopter flight to change what he said to reporters. I certainly the White House is very sensitive to the last meeting. They had in Helsinki with President Trump Vladimir Putin where he basically the president came out and said, I don't believe my CIA believe Ladimir Putin when it comes to Russian meddling in the election. And then of course, he had to a couple of days later say no, I didn't mean all that. So it's it's very curious said one of the things he wanted to do was me with Putin. And he apparently is not going to do that. At least now wanna one it's unlikely he won't see him somewhere and talk to him. He's also going to try to talk to Brazil, the president of China to work out. Solve this problem with the president's created with these trade tariffs that are hurting American businesses from the car industry to agriculture and the president says it no it's it's not him. It's doing it's China. So he's got that problem. And then the third problem is one of the country's at this g twenty meeting is Saudi Arabia. So the crown prince Saudi Arabia. The man who the CIA says is likely the person who ordered the killing of Jamal kashogi is going to be there in the president really optically can't seem with him either. So there is no mayday meeting is slated with the crown prince not that we know. But who knows you know, things change by the hour with us administration. So the couldn't very well be Andy, it seems like it was almost yesterday when we had the controversy regarding CIA director Gina hassle not being made available to US senators for briefing on the. Killing of Jamal kashogi. Is there any new information on why she was not in attendance yesterday? No, we haven't. We haven't heard the why behind it. We do know that Lindsey Graham, what are the president's the strongest allies in the Senate. His basically said I'm gonna hold my breath and take a breath and take my ball and go home until you guys have of that briefing for me on the CIA. And what happened which means is that he and a couple of other senators Republicans could gunk up the works in this lame duck session in terms of getting anything from laws of the president wants to get pushed through at the last minute to judicial nominees, and that's a real problem for the president. What about former FBI director James Comey filing a federal lawsuit today. Andy, tell us about that, do you know much about it. Well, he is called a sued basically challenging me a sorority of this house committee to hold closed-door hearings with him. He says he's more than happy to answer the subpoena income on Capitol Hill and talk he just doesn't want to do behind closed doors because he knows that the Republicans are trying to hide things and they've been known to selectively leak information, and he says, no, I'm willing to talk and public. Go ahead. Let's let's bring it on. So that's a that's a problem for the Republicans. And we'll see what happens in court ABC's Andy Field. Thank you, Andy.
